he 1960s folk singer Bob Dylan sang that “the times they are a changin’.” That was true then and is certainly true today. We know that print has its place, but many people now prefer to read online, and I’m happy to tell you that effective with this issue, your copy of Parts Magazine can now be with you on the go, readable not only in print form – as thousands have for more than 25 years – but also on your computer and smart phone. This is our annual ATV/UTV issue, surely one of the most important issues of the year for those retailers with off-road clientele. The side-by-side market has been one of the strongest segments of the industry in the last decade, so important many dealers would not have made it this far without it. Depending on where you live, you and your customers use ATVs and UTVs in different ways. Some areas provide great riding in the woods, others in the farm lands. NEWS EVENTS 2019 Lucas Oil Motocross Championship THOR RIDERS ON THE RISE

450cc Class By now we all know the success story of Cooper Webb. To recap, Webb had two 250 Supercross West Championships and the 2016 MX National Championship under his belt when he moved up to the 450 class in 2017. Fast and fearless, Webb looked like a sure bet in the 450 class. However, after a two-year dry spell on 450s, Webb took a new ride at KTM in 2019 and things started to fall into place. Well, looks like this is his breakout year. The THOR/KTM rider started off winning the 450cc Supercross Championship. During the Supercross season he put together seven victories and 14 podiums to clinch the title. He carried that momentum into the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, scoring a bunch of top five placings and getting his first ever 450cc class Motocross National overall win with a 1-1 at the Millville National on July 20. “Man, what a day at Millville! Qualified first and went 1-1 for first Overall for my first ever 450 mx podium and win!” said Webb. “Conditions were tricky but we charged hard and were able to have an unbelievable day! What a feeling!” He is sure to score even more now that the first 450 victory spell is broken. Webb currently sits fourth and climbing in the points chase in the 450cc class of the MX Nationals.

There is even better news for Parts Unlimited dealers in the 450cc motocross class. THOR/KTM’s Marvin Musquin is having a phenomenal season as well. After a stellar Supercross round where he scored two overall victories, Musquin proved to be even faster at the 450 motocross nationals. So far this season he’s scored several podiums and garnered two victories at Southwick and Florida. He’s standing second in the points chase and is a distant threat to Eli Tomac’s title chase.

250cc Class In the 250cc motocross nationals, three THOR/Monster Energy/Star/Yamaha teammates currently sit in the top five in points. Dylan Ferrandis is second in the points run with several podiums and overall victories – at the Red Bud National, and Washougal. Justin Cooper is close behind sitting third in points with six podiums and a victory in Florida. Holding on the fifth spot in the title chase is Colt Nichols, with several top five finishes and a podium spot at Hangtown. Ferrandis is pushing to close the points gap between himself and Adam Cianciarulo, the points leader. He put a sizable dent in closing the rift with a 1-1 for the overall victory at

Washougal, but still has 28 points to go to be tied. So, it’s going to come down to the final races for Dylan Ferrandis to get a #1 on the back of his THOR jersey. “It’s crazy how my season goes so far,” Ferrandis said after his win at Washougal. “I came from Redbud going 1-1, and then last week I was fourth overall. That sucks, but it’s something that I have to work on. For me, today was a really good day, and in the second moto we put on a crazy show with Adam (Cianciarulo). I think it was fun to watch for everyone.” As Yogi Berra once said, “It ain’t over till it’s over,” and the upcoming final races of the season will tell the story of the 2019 MX National Championships. We’ll keep you posted. ■

NEWS EVENTS McGrath Rules Mammoth Motocross Photos by Kinney Jones Every summer since 1968, racers have flocked to Mammoth Lakes for the classic Mammoth Motocross, the oldest continuous running motocross in the USA. The track has changed a little over the years, but the fun hasn’t. In addition to attracting some of the top pro riders, the event has become one of the major amateur events. This year’s race in late-June attracted more than 2,700 entries.

Father/daughter moto: Rhowan McGrath helped her dad – and Supercross legend – Jeremy McGrath celebrate his five victories at the 2019 Mammoth Motocross.

THOR-sponsored KTM rider Gary Sutherlin won the Over-30 Pro class with a 1-1-2-1 score. The 2017 WORCS champion and 2017 AMA Hare and Hound Champion bested his 2018 performance where he picked up second overall. It’s been a few years since THOR-sponsored Jeremy McGrath ruled the roost in Supercross, but don’t think for a minute that he’s not staying in shape. The King of Supercross was the star of the show at the 52nd annual Monster Energy Mammoth Motocross. He entered the 40+ A and Vintage 2 (1976-1989) classes and ended up winning five out of his six races. ■

2019 American Flat Track Series Mid-Season Update Photos by Scott Hunter/American Flat Track

Indian/Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties rider Jared Mees showing great form during Twins class qualifying at the Lima Half-Mile. The multi-time AFT Champion would go on to an epic win at what many are calling one of the season’s most exciting races.

AFT Twins Class As the 2019 AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines series reaches the midpoint of the season, it is apparent that Indian’s Wrecking Crew—sponsored by Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties—is living up to its nickname as all three team riders have won at least once so far – Jared Mees, 3; Briar Bauman, 2; and Bronson Bauman, 1. When the AFT series stopped in Lima, Ohio, on June 29th for the annual halfmile race at Allen County Fairgrounds, the continued on page 12...

Wrecking Crew hit the famous oval’s broad turns with reckless abandon. Mees and Briar Bauman launched to an early lead and battled until Briar dropped out with a rare mechanical issue. He had, to that point, scored seven podium finishes in a row. Bauman was replaced up front by Jeffery Carver Jr. and Henry Wiles, and the remaining trio sprinted to the checkered flag, with Mees riding the outside line to score the win. Briar Bauman regrouped for the next race, a Short Track, at New York’s Weedsport Speedway, with every intention of getting back on track. And, by the end of the night, every agreed he had. After setting the fastest qualifying time, Briar zipped past Carver in the early laps of the Main Event and cruised unchallenged to his second win of the season. He increased his lead in the AFT Twins points standings over teammate Mees to a hefty 26 points. The Indian Wrecking Crew now heads for South Dakota where two championship races will be held during the annual Sturgis Rally: Buffalo Chip TT in Sturgis and Black Hills Half-Mile in Rapid City.

Shayna Texter Wins Lima For the second consecutive year at the Allen County Fairgrounds in Lima, Ohio, KTM/Parts Unlimited rider Shayna Texter was simply unstoppable in the Roof Systems AFT Singles Main Event. It was a great day for the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team, who earned its first 1-2 sweep on Saturday for Round 9 of the 2019 American Flat Track Championship. Texter claimed her second AFT Singles Main Event win of the season, while her teammate, Dan Bromley, followed closely in second.

It’s Briar Bauman at the top of the podium after winning the New York Short Track Main Event. It was the Indian/Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties rider’s second victory of the 2019 season.

Parts Unlimited-sponsored KTM rider Shayna Texter returned to the Lima Half-Mile to win the top spot on the podium for the second year in a row in the Singles class. Texter put in a commanding performance throughout the day, getting a second-place qualifying position and winning heat two.

Texter was good from the start as she placed her KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition into a second-place qualifying position earlier in the day. While she had to make some bike adjustments early on to accommodate the deep, sandy pea gravel race course, Texter was able to dominate AFT Singles heat two, leading all five laps of the race. In the semi, she brought it home once again with a startto-finish victory amidst a stacked field of riders. In the Main Event, Texter got off to a fourth-place start and she quickly

worked her way into third by lap two. From there, Texter never looked back as she finished just ahead of her teammate, Bromley, with victory number two on the season and her second-straight win at the Lima Half-Mile. “My Red Bull KTM backed by Roof Systems motorcycle was just working so good,” Texter said. “I couldn’t figure out how I won this race last year. I sat around for 365 days and thought, ‘Man, how did I win Lima?’ So, to win it twice is incredible. It’s a dream come true.” ■

In 1976, Dick was recruited by Jim Tobin, President of Scott USA, to become the sales and marketing manager of the motorcycle division for the famous ski goggle company. He helped make Scott goggles the number one selling brand in the 1970s and 1980s. He also was responsible for the introduction of the infamous Scott boot. It was Dick’s forward thinking to get riders like Bob Hannah, Danny LaPorte and Doug “Wheelie King” Domokos to wear the boots in order to bring attention to them. In 1980 after Scott USA, he joined in a partnership with Bob Hannah and Scott Boyer to form Hannah Racing Products (HRP). HRP was famous for having motocross pants with built-in kidney belts, along with their even more famous Flak-Jak chest protectors. In 1983, Kryder and Boyer brought Smith Goggles to the motorcycle market. This team of goggle experts introduced the Smith Roll-Off System, which many motorcycle enthusiasts around the world still use and enjoy. After HRP, Dick starting consulting for various industry companies. Within a few years he began working primarily for Cobra USA. At Cobra he was responsible for all foreign and international sales. People will remember Dick Kryder as one of the nicest and most funloving people within our business. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Godspeed, Dick. ■

TIRES

Full Lineup

Sportmax Tires for Spirited Riding from the GPR-300, providing more grip and stability under braking, plus enhanced wet and dry grip. Nimble, predictable handling and a quick warm-up time are additional features.

Sportmax Q3+

Dunlop had canyon carvers in mind when it designed the Q3+, which offers predictability, a compliant ride and high cornering grip. Dunlop’s MT Multi-Tread™ technology combines mileage and outstanding grip, and Carbon Fiber Technology utilizes carbon fiber reinforcement in the tire sidewalls for exceptional cornering performance and feel. The Q3+ has an aggressive hypersport tread pattern paired with tread grooves that enhance wet-weather performance. In the rear tire, Intuitive Response Profile technology allows greater latitude in line choice while cornering, plus confident linear steering. The Sportmax Q4 is Dunlop’s highest-performance DOTapproved tire, but it was purpose-built for track days by the same engineers who designed Dunlop’s MotoAmerica race slicks. The minimal tread grooves and maximum land area provide race-level grip, and the Q4 can achieve lean angles of 62 degrees (as tested by Dunlop on a 2017 Suzuki GSX-R1000 RR on a closed track at Barber Motorsports Park). Carbon Fiber Technology enhances the Q4’s cornering and braking stability.

RoadSport 2

The RoadSport 2 is a great choice for daily commuters because it blends performance and value.

The Sportmax tire lineup also includes sport touring, with the Roadsmart II® and Roadsmart III® covering that category. The Roadsmart II offers versatile sport touring performance at an affordable price. Dunlop reintroduced the original Roadsmart II tread pattern, but combined it with new compounds for enhanced performance. The compounds include silica to help deliver impressive performance in wet conditions as well as increased mileage, and the tire profiles provide nimble, responsive handling.

D

unlop knows that every sport rider’s budget, riding style and needs are different, which is why the Sportmax family of tires has a wellrounded mix of choices, from budget-minded to premium for a range of riding styles. Of the six Sportmax tires, four of them fall into the traditional sport riding category. The GPR-300®, RoadSport 2, Q3+® and Q4® cover all the bases. The GPR-300 is Dunlop’s value performance tire, making it an ideal option for your budget-conscious customers. It offers a balance of good grip in both wet and dry conditions, quick turn-in and an expansive 17-inch size range to fit a huge variety of bikes, from small to large displacement. The RoadSport 2 is a great choice for daily commuters because it blends performance and value. It is an upgrade

The Roadsmart III is the premium sport touring Sportmax tire. It delivers improved grip, lean angle and mileage compared to the Roadsmart II. MT Multi-Tread technology in the rear tire combines a silica-infused, long-wearing compound in the center of the tread for longer tread life and special lateral grip compounds on the shoulders for outstanding grip. The compound also incorporates an innovative resin for increased wet grip. The sidewall construction of the Roadsmart III helps to provide a comfortable ride and precise handling, while the rear tire profile has an increased footprint and improved mileage. ■

Rugged New Luggage Line

The tactical luggage is designed to be super functional, with wide openings for easy access, plenty of accessory pockets and pouches, and D-rings and MOLLE webbing for attaching accessories or connecting bags together.

S

addlemen has expanded its luggage line with a new tactical series of bags. With modern design cues, a range of sizes and multiple placement options, the tactical bags are ready to ride in just minutes, mounting easily to everything from touring bikes to sportbikes. Customers will know with just a glance that these are not traditional motorcycle bags. Water- and UV-resistant 1200D fabric is used instead of leather, offering a sturdy, long-lasting synthetic alternative. There are also no shiny bits on these bags: all of the hardware, including the Saddlemen badge, is blacked out for a sleek look. Outside, MOLLE webbing and strategically-placed D-rings provide a lot of options for strapping two tactical bags together or for attaching other accessories. The options are virtually limitless. Inside, Saddlemen has included reinforcements to each tactical bag so that they hold their shape even when empty. They won’t sag or flap no matter how little gear is packed inside.

PARTS MAGAZINE

Saddlemen motorcycle luggage is not just designed to look good, function is paramount in the design of each bag. Wide openings for the main compartments, accessory pockets, pouches for electronics as well as easy mounting and carrying options are all taken into careful consideration. The tactical bags are designed to fit a wide range of riding styles, and there are mounting options for racks, rear packs, sissy bars, tails and passenger seats. Typically, a bag will not require any tools to install. Strong, built-in straps make mounting quick and effortless. The black zipper pulls are designed so that a lock can be inserted for extra security. Saddlemen even took the weather into consideration: each bag comes with a waterproof cover that stows easily inside a pocket. Straps or drawstrings attached to the cover allow it to be tightened for a snug fit over the bag, ensuring that it will not flap in the wind or allow water to sneak in. At a glance, the naming system for the nine tactical bags might seem random, but it is actually a guide to the size and placement for each bag. The first one or two letters designate where the bag goes: an “S” bag is compatible

with a sissy bar, for example. The numbers that follow indicate the size of the bag in cubic inches. So, the BR3400 tactical bag is designed to mount on a back rest, and it has a storage capacity of 3400 cubic inches. The BR3400 tactical back seat/sissy bar bag is actually quite versatile, and it is already a popular product with customers. It can mount to the seat, luggage rack or sissy bar. The big main compartment will accommodate a fullface helmet plus other cargo, and there is a padded laptop pocket for customers who need to get a little work done on the road. Six external pockets let a rider stow smaller items. An adjustable backrest pad will help a passenger stay comfortable. Removable backpack straps let a rider carry the BR3400 with ease. Saddlemen’s biggest tactical bag is the R4100, which Saddlemen engineered for long-distance riding. The shape means it will even fit between a rider and a TourPak or rear case, and multiple rings enable a variety of mounting configurations. There are four exterior pockets,

The TS3200DE tactical deluxe cruiser tail bag has a cutout that enables several mounting options, even with a rear bag already installed. A padded shoulder strap makes carrying the bag easy, and a tech organizer inside the main compartment keeps phones, cameras, chargers and other hardware accessible.

Accessibility is key while out on the road, and the pouches and pockets on the tactical range allow for easy in-and-out access. There are spaces for stashing everything from gloves and maps to electronics and glasses.

The TS1450R and TS1620S are two sizes of the same tactical tunnel/tail bag style. A cutout in the bag’s shape fits easily over the tail of a bike, and the low-profile design of the TS1450R is especially compatible with sportbikes. Both bags feature two external pockets and a carrying handle. The TR2300DE and TR3300DE tactical deluxe rack bags include a tech organizer, key clip and mesh pocket inside the main compartment. Trunk, luggage rack or rear seat mounting options are possible thanks to a near-universal fitment. Carry handles and a removable shoulder strap are included. The R1300LXE tactical deluxe roll bag works with a sissy bar rack or top box with an integrated rack. It is expandable by four inches and has a clip-on shoulder strap. The S3500 tactical deluxe sissy bar bag has large, easyopen side flaps, and a removable, adjustable shelf helps separate cargo. Cargo straps on the top can accommodate a small bag, a jacket or other gear. Padded backpack straps are included. ■

Race Season Ready Unveiling the New 2020 Gear

LEFT: Look for that new 2020 gear on Yamaha/Moose Racing rider Brandon Hartranft. BELOW: Honda/Moose Racing ATV rider Katelyn Osburn races the GNCC series in Moose’s new apparel.

A

t Moose Racing, it’s never too early to start thinking about next season. The company has just launched its 2020 gear, with an updated range that spans different off-road riding styles as well as adult and youth designs. For 2020, Moose Racing has the popular M1 gear available in six new colorways. M1 race wear is ideal for hard riding, whether it’s on the track or trail. The racing-centric design of the M1 line features a more athletic, form-fitting style combined with durable materials. The updated M1 look includes improved ventilation in the jersey, which has panels of micro mesh in strategic areas that are not in the roost zone, meaning air gets in, but dirt stays out. The polyester panels in the roost zones, meanwhile, are semi-ventilated for a balance of cool and clean. The non-fade sublimated graphics are laid down on a quick-drying fabric that wicks moisture away from the rider’s body to further the comfort factor. A custom stretch collar and non-restrictive mini-cuffs are fitted but not tight. The matching M1 pants are made of a high-denier polyester chassis with double- and triple-stitched seams and a reinforced seat panel to ensure strength. The pattern on the full-grain leather knee panels promotes better ventilation and flexibility, while the pre-bent legs are comfortable right from the start. The three-point waist adjustment system keeps the pants in place. The Qualifier gear is also getting an updated look for 2020 with six new colorways, which are available all the

way up to size 5XL in the jersey and 54 in the pants. The Qualifier jersey has a generous cut designed for supreme comfort and a full range of movement on the bike, making it an ideal choice for all kinds of off-road riding. The polyester chassis has sublimated graphics that retain their brightness wash after wash, and the finishing touches include a stretch collar and mini-cuffs. The matching Qualifier pants have double stitching on the polyester chassis, and there is a reinforced panel on each knee for additional abrasion resistance. Like the Qualifier jersey, the Qualifier pants are designed to give a rider plenty of room to move around, including multiple stretch panels.

Moose Racing’s Sahara gear is great for riders who need to beat the heat. Both the jersey and pants are made of a highly-ventilated polyester mesh chassis to ensure the best airflow possible. Non-fading sublimated graphics are available in six different choices. The jersey has an athletic fit paired with stretch for a full range of motion.

M1 apparel

In the Sahara pants, high-denier polyester reinforcements in key areas add support, as do the full-grain leather inner knee panels. The mesh knee panels have an updated structure that promotes improved ventilation.

MOOSE RACING

Younger riders can get the same style and quality with the Youth Qualifier jersey and pants. Rather than simply being smaller versions of the Qualifier gear, this version is designed specifically for youth sizing.

Moose Racing has also updated its glove choices, including the SX1, MX1, MX2, XCR and XC1. All of the styles have a pre-curved finger design for an ergonomic fit while riding. The SX1 gloves in adult and youth sizing have a polyester backhand that provides a lightweight stretch fit for maximum comfort and performance. New outseam finger construction adds dexterity and comfort, and a new lower-profile hook-and-loop wrist closure is more ergonomic. A single layer of perforated Clarino covers the palms to provide airflow and improved feel, while a tacky grip print on the fingers and palm keeps a rider’s hands just where they need to be on the controls.

Qualifier gear

The Moose Racing MX1 gloves have a soft chassis topped with a flexible D3O knuckle pad that promotes roost and debris deflection. The sublimated stretch backhand ensures a breathable, flexible fit, even through the graphics. Like the SX1, the Clarino palm has a tacky overlay on the fingertips and palm for extra grip and control. The MX1 gloves also have a new lowerprofile adjustable hook-and-loop wrist closure. The MX2 gloves offer a layer of tacky spots on the palm and fingertips, too, but this time they sit atop a single layer of synthetic leather for maximum feel. The sublimated stretch backhand provides a contoured fit. Moose Racing designed the XCR and XC1 gloves to be water-resistant and windproof. The XCR gloves have a single-layer leather palm, flexible D3O padded finger panels and knuckle plate plus an adjustable cuff strap to seal out the elements.

Sahara

The XC1 glove features a single-layer Clarino palm and outseam finger construction for maximum feel and comfort. An additional tacky grip on the fingers helps with control. The XC1 is also available in youth sizing. ■

Exhausts for the Indian FTR 1200

I

ndian’s new FTR 1200 and the fully optioned 1200 S are something special. The bikes are fun, fast, and they look exactly like what they are – flat-track derived motorcycles tamed for the street. Developed with plenty of input from the championship-winning Wrecking Crew Indian AFT Twins’ racing program, the FTR 1200 models break new ground in the V-twin marketplace. There’s a lot to like here. That full-cradle frame, 120-plus advertised horsepower, adjustable suspension, state-of-the-art electronics with Sport, Standard, and Rain modes available on those S-models, as well as unique throttle maps and customizable traction control levels. It all comes together in a pair of bikes just begging to be ridden hard and flicked around with abandon. Cool stuff, little wonder these newest Indians have debuted to rave reviews.

Low Mount style slip-on for Indian’s FTR 1200

Then there’s that OEM exhaust system. It’s big and bulky, and those twin oversized shotgun-style mufflers look a bit out of place; not exactly in line with the whole flat track/racebike feel of the FTRs. An exhaust swap is likely one of the first things owners of these newest Indians will be looking to do. Three brand-new single megaphone systems are available here and they all connect up to the stock 2-into-1 head pipes and its collector. There’s a Low Mount style and two High Mount options. The Low Mount system eliminates the OEM catalytic convertor, as does one of the High Mounts, while the second High Mount system offered retains the cat.

Hight Mount style slip-on from Bassani

All three use a single Bassani-design short megaphone muffler, stainless-steel, 4-inches in diameter and TIG-welded by hand. They’re all finished off with a billet-aluminum slash cut end cap, and removable internal baffles. As cool looking as all these Bassani systems are, there’s more than just an appearance bump here. True to Bassani tradition the systems have all been designed to maximize horsepower and torque and provide an aggressive tone

to go with that power and performance boost. It’s a win/ win/win on all counts – looks, performance and sound. The systems are all easy on the wallet, too. The Low Mount option has a suggested retail of $429.95, the High Mounts, with or without the catalytic converter, are $449.95. Parts Unlimited has them all. ■

Smooth Shifting Style Ducati Clutch Upgrades

our Ducati-riding customers want no-compromise performance across the board, and Barnett offers a full complement of upgraded clutch hardware specifically for those iconic Italian motorcycles. With Barnett, they can make sure those clutches are tight, won’t slip, won’t grab and are as smooth-shifting as possible. Barnett offers a new second generation dry clutch kit for the 6-speed models through 2006, and there are Kevlar and carbon fiber kits for wet-clutch bikes, as well as heavy-duty spring kits, CNC-machined billet aluminum pressure plates anodized in red, black, or gold. There are also those exclusive and patented clutch baskets that feature stainless-steel inserts to ensure smooth, consistent clutch engagement and incredible durability. Individually, each one of these kits is a big step-up from OEM; collectively, they’re a dramatic transformation for a Ducati clutch. The second generation dry clutch kits will be especially welcomed by customers with 6-speed dry-clutch bikes like the 916s, 998s, 999s, and S2R1000s. New and greatly improved, there is now a damper spring in place of the troublesome wave plate for smoother engagement and ease in finding neutral. Barnett has also added a single, 0.125-inch thick steel first plate in place of the usual two thin plates. It all adds up to more strength and consistent performance, helping to eliminate the clutch-drag on these models. Everything is compatible with the OEM components. Let your Ducati-riding customers know that Barnett has everything necessary to upgrade their stock clutches, a change that results in tight, no-slip shifting.

Matching those clutch kits with Barnett’s heavy-duty springs, billet clutch basket and billet pressure plate continues the upgrade. The six heavy-duty, chrome-silicon springs are shot-peened, heat-treated and powder-coated gloss black for an attractive, long lasting finish. Stainless steel screws and billet-aluminum spring cups in the choice of red, black, gold, or clear anodize are included. The end result is a great look, reliable performance and no noticeable increase in lever effort. Including a Barnett clutch basket with its second generation stainless-steel inserts ensures not only an incredibly durable basket, but smooth, consistent clutch engagement. Topping all this off with a Barnett pressure plate completes the package in both performance and style. CNC machined from aerospace quality billet aluminum and anodized in red, black, or gold, the pressure plate not only looks great, but also helps protect the entire clutch assembly in the event of a tip over. includes and installs the bearing and clutch-control pin for an easy installation. Clutch drag, notchy shifting and erratic engagement are hardly performance attributes, certainly nothing a nocompromise Ducati rider wants. Swapping an OEM clutch for the Barnett upgrades, all made in the USA, helps to eliminate all of that. ■

A Head Full of Freedom The Airflite Gets Patriotic

I

con’s Airflite Freedom Spitter helmet looks like something dreamed up after toasting to America one too many times during the Fourth of July. Is it patriotic or psychotic? Maybe a little bit of both.

After all, the design features a tattooed bald eagle wearing mirrored sunglasses. And if that isn’t enough, the eagle is armed with throwing stars, like some sort of freedom-fighting, liberty-loving ninja. As with most Icon designs, the look of the Freedom Spitter can speak for itself, but the other features of the helmet deserve some recognition, too. The injection-molded polycarbonate shell gives the Airflite helmet strength, while the reduced profile helps keep the overall weight down. The neckline of the helmet is shaped to avoid jacket or suit interference. The reduced size of the shell was carefully designed to ensure that the Airflite maintains Icon’s World Standard requirements – all Airflite helmets meet DOT, ECE and PSC helmet safety standards. The Airflite helmet design has a distinctive face shield, giving it a slight retro-future look. Called the FliteShield, it is designed to enable quick shield changes. It keeps dirt and water and other debris out of the rider’s face, and it is fog-free to ensure a clear view. Inside the Airflite, a DropShield can slide into place to dim the glare on sunny days. A lever on the outside of the helmet lets the DropShield be raised and lowered easily, even with gloves on. The Freedom Spitter comes stock with a clear FliteShield and an RST Silver DropShield, but Icon has six replacement options for both shields. Icon knows that wearing such a cool design can be a hot job, so the strategically-placed ventilation system keeps the airflow moving. There are four intake vents, including a motocross-inspired chinbar vent, two exhaust ports and deep channels inside the EPS foam liner. Inside the helmet, the removable HydraDry liner wicks moisture away from the rider’s head, and it works in tandem with the venting to further reduce heat build-up. Riders who like the look and features of the Airflite but prefer slightly more subtle graphics can look into one of the 19 other choices, including gloss and matte solids plus graphics that range from a deep-sea octopus encounter (Inky) to the most 90s design this side of the 21 Century (Synthwave). And, of course, there are skulls, including the Krom and Skull18. ■

All-Terrain Braking Pads and Rotors

EBC has a variety of brake pad options for your Adventure Touring and dual-sport riding customers. They’re designed to provide great braking power both on-road and off.

E

BC Brakes has plenty of ways to help Adventure Touring and dual-sport bikes stop better. The company offers a variety of brake pads and rotors that have applications for bikes in those categories, with everything from street options to fullrace setups. The EBC Carbon X brake pads are suitable for either street or off-road use. The pads are made from an impregnated hybrid carbon. While that material will not outlast a sintered copper brake pad, it does have the benefit of lower heat generation and transfer. That makes the Carbon X an ideal pad for riding off-road in fast, dry conditions, and it is a popular choice with enduro and hare scramble riders. Riders looking for a durable option can go for the EBC R-Series sintered pads, which have applications for both off-road motorcycles and ATVs. The sintered copper material of these heavy-duty pads offers high durability and works well in muddy conditions, sand, water and other elements. In addition, the R-Series sintered pads are designed for long pad life.

The front rotors are fully floating and come in one of five colors, including black, red, blue, green and gold. Mill rolled, laser cut, heat treated and tempered, the rotors replace the OEM version exactly so no changes are required. Simply install a set of new pads with them, and that is it. ■

A long-lasting sintered copper alloy ensures high durability and friction in a racing environment. Many of the applications come with an included slider pin kit for easy installation. Power and Style Increase the Fun Factor

T

here’s a whole new range of motorcycles gaining mass appeal among both new riders and experienced two-wheeled veterans, and the one common denominator among all those popular bikes is that they’re good, clean, affordable fun.

With its brush-finished stainless steel with a short, stepped-canister design the Hi-Output slip-on is an excellent complement to the R NineT’s uncluttered vibe. That no-nonsense look is matched with a lot of Vance & Hines performance engineering, too.

These motorcycles are capturing the pure essence of motorcycling, and the hearts and minds of riders from all over. They are BMW’s R NineT range, Ducati’s Scrambler models and the Monster 797, and Honda’s uber sporty minibike, the Grom.

This is a muffler designed to let that boxer motor deliver all the top-end power and low-end grunt it’s capable of churning out. There’s a classic tone, as well, and it’s all finished off with a CNC-machined, black end cap along with a laser-engraved and riveted-on Vance & Hines badge. Suggested retail runs $399.99.

All those bikes now also have something else in common – Vance & Hines. Looking to up the fun-factor for these bikes, Vance & Hines has just released classic stepped canister *Hi-Output slip-ons for the R NineT bikes and those popular Ducatis. There is also a full *Hi-Output Hooligan system designed specifically for the Grom. 4,000 rpm all the way up to the redline. The Stage 2 intake cam, once again paired with that new exhaust cam, is the mid- to top-end powerhouse. The power-gains here stretch well above the 8,000 rpm mark.

If that bike is a next generation 2017 through 2019 Kawasaki KX250F, Hot Cams has easily installed camshaft configurations that can deliver everything from big power in the mid-rpm ranges, to boosts that come on strong way up top. And, all of this is possible without losing any bottom-end grunt.

These new 2017 through 2019 Kawasaki KX250F camshaft configurations are innovative designs. They’re engineered in-house using state-of-the-art valvetrain software, and they’re dyno proven.

Hot Cams has two new intake cam configurations – Stage 1 and Stage 2 – for those latest-model Kawasakis, and both are designed to work with a single exhaust cam configuration, sold separately. Intake and exhaust, they’re all drop-in replacements that can add up to a 10 percent gain in power exactly where it’s wanted. RIDING APPAREL

Leather for the Long Haul

Tale of a Brand’s Timeless Style and Appeal

Back in the day, Dale Larrew, his Siberian Husky Chrystal and his trusty Z1R leather jacket were a familiar site out on the road. That same jacket lived through 20 years of travels, rallies and campouts.

D

ale Larrew is a veteran of the road. Chances are, if you’d passed Larrew out on the highway, it was a sight you’d likely remember. One obvious reason would be his passenger, a Siberian Husky named Crystal who rode pillion in a box emblazoned with her name. One not so obvious reason was his Z1R jacket, which got him through 20 years of travels, camp outs and rallies.

It was a no-brainer decision. He wore that original Z1R jacket when he and Crystal went to Minnesota, where they participated in a charity ride with the Minnesota Vikings and Evel Knievel. At Sturgis, the jacket doubled as a pillow when he camped. Larrew also recalls how grateful he was for the jacket’s thick leather when the weather turned cold during a ride to the Roosevelt Dam north of Phoenix.

Larrew knows that out there, somewhere, are dozens of drive-by photos of him, Crystal and that Z1R jacket. He knows this because on every adventure where Crystal rode along, there would inevitably be a moment where passing cars would brake, slow and roll alongside him so someone could aim a camera for a picture.

“The old jacket has been to Florida, California, Washington and Oregon, as well,” says Larrew. Sometimes he even wore it when he wasn’t on the bike, like when he rode the Amtrak Coast Starlight from Seattle to Los Angeles. “Thirty-four hours in a seat, and my jacket again served as a comfortable pillow. One day I hope to take the new jacket on a journey to the Northeast of the country.”

Well, 20 years is a long time and a lot of things in Larrew’s life have changed – Crystal has crossed over the rainbow bridge and his new dogs prefer staying home to being in the saddle, he’s switched from riding Honda GL 1100s to a new Honda CTX 1300, and he relocated from California to Apache Junction, AZ. One thing that remained constant, however is that Z1R brand. When he finally decided to retire that original Z1R jacket after two decades of stalwart service, he did what anyone would do after discovering a brand to which to remain loyal; he opted for a new Z1R Arsenal jacket.

46

SEPTEMBER 2019

Eventually, after all those years of riding, road trips and camping, the Z1R jacket was starting to show its age. Larrew could feel the wind sneaking in through the stitching around the vent zippers, and he realized it was time to shop for a replacement. Sticking with the Z1R brand was never a doubt for Larrew, who wanted another jacket that could be a part of his stories for years to come. After all, Z1R’s range of riding apparel offers timeless motorcycle styling and sturdy, purpose-built construction. From its jackets and vests, to its pants, boots and gloves, Z1R’s gear is designed to provide your customers years – as evident by Larrew’s testimonial – of riding protection and comfort.

Z1R

After two decades of wear, Dale Larrew figured it was time for an upgrade and looked no further than Z1R’s new apparel lineup. He opted for the Arsenal for its timeless styling, incredible comfort and handy features such as a removable liner, zippered vents on the sleeves and an interior concealed carry pocket.

Larrew’s new Z1R Arsenal jacket is made of premium 1.1-1.2mm full grain cowhide leather combined with a polyester mesh inner liner and a full-length zip-out insulated liner. Expanded shoulder gussets increase mobility, adjustment options ensure a tailored fit and there are interior pouches for armor. Four pockets – two hand warmers and two interior concealed carry pockets – top it all off. With both of his Z1R jackets, Larrew likes the thick leather as well as the comfortable fit, but he admits that the Arsenal has some significant upgrades. In addition to the roomy interior pockets, Larrew has found the zippered vents on the sleeves to be in a much more convenient position. The zippered liner is an upgrade over the old snap-in version, and a storm flap over the front zipper keeps the wind from sneaking in. Old or new, Larrew says, “The Z1R is a very well-made jacket and stitched together well. It is heavy to the feel when holding it, but once it is on you do not notice that aspect. It is so comfortable and, even when it’s not cold, it does breathe so you do not overheat.” And even though he is wearing his new Arsenal on his current travels, Larrew is keeping the old jacket to preserve the memories of his earlier road trips, with Crystal confidently riding pillion and all those drive-by snapshots. ■

A guy can’t be expected to simply discard a piece of gear that’s seen so much history. All those road trips with Chrystal, the miles in the saddle, its service as a pillow, yep, Dale Larrew’s old Z1R jacket has seen everything. All the better reason to hold onto it, to preserve those memories.

record 458,000 UTVs were sold in the United States in 2018, up +5.9 percent from 2017, up +69 percent from 2008 and up +180 percent from 2004, according to recent findings by research firm Power Products Marketing (PPM). What makes UTVs so popular? They’re easy to operate, useful in multiple terrains for work or play and – like boating – you can bring multiple people along to enjoy the ride. They were initially a vehicle delegated to commercial uses such industrial, construction and turf maintenance uses. UTVs found favor with consumer users as soon as they realized manufacturers were bringing vehicles to market that could offer off-road adventure in relative comfort. The early Kawasaki Mule and Polaris Ranger were certainly capable, but their designs proved overtly industrial when com-

pared with the first major sport-oriented models to make an impact on consumer purchase decisions – the Yamaha Rhino and later, the Polaris RZR. Power Products Marketing divides the UTV market into five segments: Pure Utility Vehicles (PUV), Utility Cross Over Vehicles (UCV), Recreational Utility Vehicles (RUV), Sport Recreational Vehicles (SRV), and Super Sport Vehicles (SSV). Nearly 45 percent of the entire UTV market is dominated by what PPM terms UCVs, which offer utility styling with a large cargo area like the Polaris Ranger XP 900 EPS and Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT. Additional healthy growth is being experienced by the high-horsepower models like the Polaris RZR XP and Can-Am Maverick X3 that are labeled as SSVs, as well as RUVs like the Honda Pioneer 700 and Kawasaki Teryx 800 that offer sportier styling and a smaller cargo area than a UCV.

The research firm also segregates the individual types of UTVs by various user categories that combine to make up consumer applications, commercial applications and, to a much smaller extent, government applications. Whereas in 2000 the ratio between Consumer and Commercial applications was approximately 40/60, respectively, there was a significant shifting to Consumers accounting for 55 percent of sales in 2003, 69 percent in 2005 and 79 percent in 2011. Today, Consumer applications represent approximately 85 percent of sales. These numbers reflect a continuing trend of consumers gravitating toward UTVs rather than traditional ATVs. Although higher priced than traditional ATVs, the UTVs offered “more bang for the buck” in terms of including extra passengers, the range of uses and, in many cases with today’s sport-oriented models, an increased “fun” factor or improved utility usage.

According to Jason Smith, the owner of Midwest Performance & Power, a Parts Unlimited dealer in Keokuk, IA, his customers are snapping up top-shelf models like the $30,000 fully loaded Can-Am Maverick X3 Max X over traditional ATVs and even crossover UTV models by about a 10-1 ratio. “The more expensive they are, the more we sell,” Smith says. “Five years ago, I never would have guessed that I would be selling more $30,000 side-by-sides, than I would Polaris Rangers.” The other areas of booming sales are customers buying vehicles for pure utility applications, which stands to reason given the dealership’s location in a large agricultural region. Even in an area with limited riding areas, Smith says his customers are investing in the racier, more expensive models with the intention of trailering them out of state and to dedicated riding parks for their recreational activities. Smith says that the majority of these customers are buyers who used to be involved with two-wheeled recreation, or with older model ATVs like Yamaha’s Banshee. “Now they’re 35 to 55 years old and have a little money, the need for a hobby and enough testosterone left to want a new toy,” he says. When it comes to aftermarket accessories, Smith says that it’s a rare occasion that a vehicle leaves the dealership in stock condition, with most customers adding on wheels, tires, windshields, roofs and stereo systems at the minimum.

“The No. 1 thing we sell year around are AMS M1 Evil tires, and that would be because of our Parts Unlimited dealer trip to Tennessee last year,” he says. “We also do a ton of Moose Utility Division snow plows and winches in the winter.”

Kyle Phillips, product development specialist at Moose Utility Division, echoes Smith’s recollection about what are the hot selling aftermarket products. According to Phillips, popular products in the Moose Utility Division lineup include roofs, windshields, back panels and mirrors. “The first thing a UTV guy wants is cover from the weather,” he notes. Instead of buying a complete cab enclosure, he can get the items piece-by-piece.”

Phillips also has seen the shift in the market toward sportier, horsepower driven UTVs, saying that buyers of those vehicles simply aren’t afraid to spend their money on machines and aftermarket accessories. Phillips says, “You can ride two, three, four, five, six and even eight people now. Plus, in some states and counties, people can use UTVs for their main mode of transportation year-round. I’ve been doing ATV/UTV product development since Aug 1998. I never imagined the UTV market would take off like it has, but it makes sense.”

UTV/ATV MARKET OVERVIEW

Powersports enthusiasts have always strived for more performance and amenities out of their vehicle of choice, so it’s of no surprise that easy engine mods, suspension bits, wheels and tires, windshields and tops, and even luggage and entertainment systems, are often among the first additional items to be added to a UTV or ATV.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Product Performance Forty Years of Building Power

Having started with ATVs in the 1970s, Trinity’s current focus is on the booming performance side-by-side market and has a big range of products for everything from the Polaris RZR XP1000 Turbo to a Can-Am Maverick X3. One of the company’s more popular product lines is its exhaust systems. All Trinity exhausts will increase the horsepower and torque on your customers’ vehicles, and improve its overall aesthetics. This is due to the design of the headers, mufflers, and what they use for baffling and muffler packing. All Trinity full exhaust systems use 304 stainless steel, which is then TIG welded for added strength and good looks. Depending on the type of engine, the header utilizes a crossover design, or 2-into-1 styling. For example, the standard RZR XP1000 uses an x-pipe style crossover in order to increase exhaust scavenging, while at the same time creating enough backpressure for the naturally aspirated engine to perform at its best at low rpms. If you think Trinity Racing’s exhaust systems are simply impressive looking, just wait until a customer installs one on their UTV. Those exhausts will increase horsepower and torque thanks to more than 40 years of experience building performance products.

The RZR XP1000 Turbo uses a larger diameter single header, which in turn will speed exhaust gases and reduce backpressure, which turbo engines need in order to perform at their best. From the headers, the exhaust is routed into two extruded aluminum mufflers. Each muffler uses a 2¼-inch diameter perforated stainless steel baffle. Wrapped around the baffle is a sealed pillow of fiberglass, and a sheet of stainless-steel mesh. This not only creates the perfect density of packing to properly flow the exhaust gases, but also helps with sound and protects the muffler body.

T

rinity Racing is known for designing and building products that not only increase performance, but also upgrade the look of your customers’ vehicles.

All of those performance products are backed by years of experience since Trinity has been building aftermarket products since 1978. It doesn’t matter if your customer’s vehicle is naturally aspirated, or forced induction, Trinity will find a way to get more power out of it.

DRIVE CHAINS

Tough Chain

Drive Chains for Hard Use

W

hy do chains break? There are many factors that can result in chain breakage. One type of breakage usually only seen in ATV and off-road applications is called plate wear.

On a new chain, the plate should have a round shape very similar to the outline of a peanut. As the chain wears, the rounded tops and bottoms of the plate can wear flat. If this wear gets to a certain level, the chain will lose tensile strength. This loss of tensile strength can cause the chain to break while the chain is under load. When inspecting your customers’ RK Chain products, look over all parts of the chain to make sure that the inner side plate height is above 13.5mm in height for 520EXW, 520MAX-X and 520MAX-O models. If the plate height is less than 13.5mm, then the chain should be replaced immediately.

Thermal cracking can result from debris or components impinging the chain’s movement. The impingement causes the chain to quickly heat up and cool down in rapid succession. Over a period of time, this thermal exposure can reduce the strength of the chain and/or cause a chain failure. It is vitally important to check after a crash to make sure no debris or components are in contact with the chain. The EXW is rated up to 750cc and has a max tensile strength rating of 7,700 ft/lbs. It is a multi-function chain as it can also be used for enduro and GNCC racing.

MAX X and MAX O The MAX X and MAX O are perfectly suitable for weekend warriors and riders who are not seeking a lightweight racing chain, but are still looking for performance. RK’s MAX series offers performance while being economically priced.

520EXW One of RK Chain’s most popular ATV rated chains is the 520EXW. The EXW is a XW-Ring sealed chain and is a great high-speed, extreme heat performance ATV chain. RK’s XW-Ring seals utilize triple barrier grease protection, plus anti-debris technology.

RK Chain’s 520EXW chain is well-suited for use on performance ATVs. It was designed to handle ATV swingarm movement and increased torque loads.

New to the Parts Unlimited lineup, Liqui Moly offers a lineup that includes oils, grease, additives and other chemicals or care products designed to keep powersports vehicles running strong.

W

hen you consider all the moving parts within an engine and the speed at which they thrash about, it’s a miracle motors hold together at all. The incredible reliability of today’s dirtbike, streetbike, ATV, and UTV engines starts with excellent design, then relies on proper lubrication to maintain that performance long into the future.

Gearboxes and driveshafts, forks and shocks are also on the list of components that can benefit from Liqui Moly lubes, with three different grades of gear oil, fork oil in four different weights, and shock oils in both mineral and synthetic blends. Wheel and head bearings, swingarm pivots, and suspension linkage are all served by a selection of specialized greases.

No matter what your customers ride, Liqui Moly has the oil, grease, additive and other chemical or care products needed to keep their machines running strong. And now Liqui Moly’s powersports products are available in America through Parts Unlimited.

Liqui Moly’s “Shooter” fuel and oil additives have proven popular in European markets, and are likely to appeal to American riders as well. These powerful chemicals are easily poured into the tank or crankcase and help clean fuel-system and engine deposits to increase throttle response, reduce internal friction and lower operating temperatures.

Founded in Germany in 1957, Liqui Moly is a mammoth in the European motorsports and powersports markets. The company’s products are engineered, blended, and tested in Germany by Liqui Moly’s staff of 750 employees. Keeping all production processes in house allows for comprehensive quality control measures, ensuring that no matter where in the world someone cracks open a bottle of Liqui Moly, they get the same premium product. That means that the synthetic Street Race oil that fills every Moto2 and Moto3 machine in the MotoGP paddock is the same oil you can now offer to your customers. Liqui Moly’s engine-oil selection is comprehensive. There are carefully selected mineral blends for budgetconscious street riders and fully synthetic options for those seeking high levels of protection, all offered in a variety of viscosities. Specialty blends are also available for everything from a range of powersports vehicles.

BRAKE ROTORS

Better Braking

Four-Wheeler Performance Discs

Braking’s high-performance EPTA rotors feature fitments for many of the popular ATVs and UTVs from Arctic Cat, Can-Am, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, and Yamaha.

S

ince 1990, Braking has offered technologically advanced, high-end products for performance enthusiasts and racers based on track-proven designs that can lay claim to 120 world title victories.

Off-road high-performance and racing enthusiasts prowling for new products to give them an added advantage need to know about Braking’s latest addition to its line of rotors that are built for getting dirty – the EPTA. Built to perform, there are fitments for many of the popular ATVs and UTVs from Arctic Cat, Can-Am, Honda, Kawasaki, Polaris, and Yamaha. Short for Enhanced Performance Torque Application, the EPTA evolved from the company’s Batfly rotor, which includes a distinct pattern of grooves on the disk’s surface. These grooves are optimized to clear mud and dirt from the pads and rotor and create a natural ventilation effect to help keep things cool. The round design of the disk’s inside and outside diameter lead to better radial expansion in extreme heat conditions. Available in 270 mm and 280 mm sizes, EPTA rotors also share the Batfly’s directionally specific non-round surface profile for superior braking grip and heightened ability to dissipate heat, which enables more stable power in extreme conditions.

64

PARTS MAGAZINE

SEPTEMBER 2019

Just like the Batfly, the EPTA aims for high-strength and low weight, so the rotor is coupled to the 7075-T6 aluminum carrier with light stainless-steel rivets at six points from the outboard side. The non-round outer profile of the disk lowers weight while increasing rigidity, and it looks pretty stylish, too. This setup adds up to a reduction in unsprung weight for a noticeable improvement in handling. What sets the EPTA apart from the Batfly is the hub-torotor coupling system. Instead of the usual pins, the EPTA mounts to the wheel hub with clips and nails that resist deformation for more consistent performance throughout the disk’s life. This coupling system ensures more direct and constant contact between the hub and the rotor. In addition, the coupling geometry allows the rotor stems to slide radially for improved absorption of input from the terrain and to help resist deformations at high temperatures. For riders, this setup means more positive and direct feedback for a powerful and effective braking event from beginning to end. That’s a fancy way of saying the EPTA just feels better. ■

Servicing the Four-Wheelers

W

hen it comes to servicing powersports vehicles, ATV/UTV work can be more involved than ordinary dirtbike service. Those drivetrains, for starters, entail more than just sprockets and chains. There are half-shafts and U-joints to deal with, especially on the 4-wheel drive machines. Lacking the proper tools here makes replacement way more complicated than it needs to be. Ditto for many other ATV/UTV service needs – without the right tool the work can be frustrating and time-consuming. Motion Pro comes to the rescue with a lineup of ATV/UTV-specific shop tools, like a U-Joint Press sized and designed for those ATV/UTVs. There are

also ATV/UTV Axle Wrench Sets, Pro Plug Sockets, Mini Brake Bleeders, and complete Fuel Injector Cleaner Kits, all of which make working on a four-wheeler quick, hasslefree and profitable.

Motion Pro’s U-Joint Press is specifically sized and designed for use on ATVs and UTVs. It is heightadjustable, and there are two press tips for different diameter cups.

That U-Joint Press Tool, for example. Constructed with heavy-duty/heat-treated steel its 16mm, 22mm and 27mm adapters fit most ATV/UTV applications. A floating press plate design allows the use of a hammer to break loose the most stubborn joints. raking has expanded its applications for Batfly brake discs, making UTVs the latest models that can benefit from the distinct design. The nonround profile, grooves, weight and thickness all combine to offer an effective, consistent braking experience. The non-round profile on the disc maximizes the area for thermal exchange, which helps regulate heat build-up during use to keep the brakes predictable. No warping adds to the reliability factor, and the profile helps keep the brake pads clean, too. Braking has an exclusive patent for its Batfly channeled brake discs. The channels help with ventilation for further heat dissipation. The grooves also help keep the brake setup clean, sweeping mud, sand and dust away from the pad surface. That means the Batfly discs maintain performance even in the dirtiest of riding conditions. The discs have an increased thickness over stock, an attribute which improves thermal stability. By reducing stress on the disc and enhancing structural resistance, the thicker design leads to increased life for the disc. Despite

n 1994 European law changed and required everything on and in a vehicle, including the battery, had to be guaranteed for two years. TecMate worked with Honda Motor Corporation to provide a solution for their riders and the OptiMate battery saving charger was conceived.

Twenty-five years ago the first OptiMate battery charger was conceived, and shortly after appeared in the Parts Unlimited catalogs, where they still appear today.

OptiMate’s unique 24/7 maintenance program proved to keep batteries ready and extend battery life for many years longer than expected, but the feature that has captured the attention of many is OptiMate’s battery save program, able to bring a dead flat/sulphated 12V battery back to life.

It was this battery saving feature that caught the eye of the LeMans Corporation team visiting the 1994 Intermot Show in Cologne Germany, and soon after OptiMate battery saving chargers were introduced to the Powersports industry in the USA.

Recalling the history of the companies’ relationship over the years, then senior buyer for off-road products and now president/CEO of LeMans Corporation Mike Collins said of Human, “The fact that he did the right thing and stood behind the product, at a substantial cost to his company, convinced us they were a good partner and we stuck with them.” ■

Lightweight and Strong Introducing the Supertech M10

load point in case of an impact. As well as reducing friction on impact, the three-layered curved surface also would play a key role in protecting the rider by effectively dissipating energy from the skull, neck and spinal column areas. This is reinforced through the extensive use of MultiDirectional Impact Protection Systems (MIPS). These reduce rotational motion energies that impact the helmet by allowing the inner absorption layer to damp and redirect the energy before it would reach the skull. The collarbone area is equally well protected thanks to the helmet’s sculpted base, which features a relief area where the bottom is raised to clear the collarbone. When combined with the energy absorption pad, this deflects when it contacts the clavicle, significantly reducing the forces transferred to the collarbone. This principle also applies to the S-M10’s chin bar, which is formed with polypropylene and further protects the rider’s collarbone. Ventilation is crucial for every rider, and the S-M10’s interior has been designed to ensure your customers stay cool in even the hottest conditions. Making the visor design of the helmet an integral part of the ventilation system means it acts as a powerful channel to concentrate and smooth the airflow into the shell. This is combined with the Supertech liner, which optimizes airflow channeling around the rider’s head before exiting the S-M10 through the rear exhaust vents, resulting in a constant airflow while riding. Lightweight, streamlined, strong, with a unique, patented visor release, and fitting height and angle adjustment system, the Supertech M10 from Alpinestars is built to perform.

he result of over five years of intensive development and testing, the Supertech M10 helmet is Alpinestars’ most advanced, protective and performance enhancing helmet. Lightweight, streamlined, strong, with a unique, patented visor release, and fitting height and angle adjustment system, the S-M10 is DOT certified and ECE homologated for worldwide use. Weight is critical for every rider, both in safety and performance terms, and every element of the S-M10 has been rigorously researched and tested to ensure the best weight-to-strength and energy absorption properties, creating a protective, comfortable and light helmet. The S-M10 features a distinctive smooth, multi-layer carbon construction shell that is free of any external channels or features to ensure there are no elements that could act as a

The S-M10 also features a patented system that allows riders to adjust the height and angle at which the helmet sits on the head. This allows riders to fine tune the setup quickly and easily, thus meaning the helmet can be adapted to different types of riding. The helmet’s patented visor release mechanism guarantees the mounting is held securely in place while riding. It also provides the right level of resistance to ensure the lightweight visor detaches from the shell in the event of a significant impact. Other features include a removable, washable liner and a wider than regulation 26mm chin strap for ease of use. The helmet’s interior lining includes channels that allow a hydration tube to be incorporated on either side of the shell. The helmet is available in small, medium, large and extralarge shell sizes, to ensure the most comfortable fit and optimal safety for every rider. ■

Exhaust for 2-Stroke and 4-Stroke Machines

EXHAUST

Performance Pipes

The Factory Fatty and the Fatty 2-stroke pipes have a deep history at FMF Racing. They feature a broad range of fitments and wide coverage of models and years.

D

on Emler and his Flying Machine Factory were instrumental when it came to 2-stroke pipe development and tuning in the early 1970s. Now, some 47 years later, this still holds true.

Emler is still in FMF’s R&D department area every day, pushing the envelope of exhaust development for 2-stroke and 4-stroke machines. In fact, it’s that focus that drives FMF’s entire research and development efforts for building and supplying exhaust for a wide range of machines. You may have heard about FMF’s temporary exclusivity with Husqvarna and KTM on select FMF products. A big driver for Emler and the FMF R&D team was working firsthand with KTM’s technicians to gain insight that helps drive the development of high-quality, race-winning products for the Husky and KTM TPI machines. The results are some very potent exhausts to suit these 2019 model year machines from Austria. As 2-strokes began to give way to those high-revving 4-strokes a few years ago, FMF established itself as a major player in performance exhaust for that segment, but still focused heavily on providing products for the 2-stroke market. Whether old or new, big or little, if it’s a 2-stroke motor, FMF likely has something very effective and affordable to offer. With the resurgence of 2-stroke machines from a number of OEMs, FMF is set with a range of exhausts to fit the bill. One standout product is the FMF Gold Series Fatty – the company’s first and the original 2-stroke pipe. Fattys have a broad range of fitments and wide coverage of models and years. The brilliant chrome and nickel plating make these a great looking option. The Factory Fatty is an evolution from the earlier days of cone pipes as created for use by FMF for factory riders and teams. These pipes share many of the same performance characteristics of those racing pipes, but with improved, consistent craftsmanship, increased material quality and affordable prices.

FMF has a selection of 2-stroke silencers that should meet the needs of your customers, no matter the riding terrain or situation.

Given their popularity, your customers likely know the performance reputation of the Fatty Series of pipes. Whether they’re installed on new or used models on the showroom floor, or displayed near the parts counter, they’re sure to get plenty of attention. Thanks to today’s off-road riding scene, another product that’s significant is the FMF Gnarly pipe. It’s a great exhaust solution for riders of all levels who are into more technical riding and looking for a perfect low and mid-range response on the trails. Due to their intended use, Gnarlys are built with thicker gauge steel and are ready to take some abuse from unforgiving trails as evident by their wide use in professional competition. FMF Gnarly pipes are readily available today for new and old machines – including for the 2019 Husqvarna and KTM models – via Parts Unlimited. Some FMF 2-stroke pipe single part numbers fit machines up to 20 years old. While the proper pipe is quite important, the rear silencer does more than compliment that change. FMF’s established range includes the Powercore 2, Powercore 2 Shorty, Turbinecore 2, and its newest 2.1 series of silencers. With a lineup this big, there’s a silencer for every application no matter the rider’s priority – performance, sound, forestry legal, or any combination thereof. ■

Clutching Adventure

New Applications for BMW Models and less slippage. The system is able to harness that BMW’s power without the need for stiffer springs. Fade is eliminated, durability increased, there’s smoother shifting, a more consistent feel and with the Rekluse basket sleeves there no basket wear or notching.

R

ekluse has expanded BMW applications for its TorqDrive clutch pack and the RadiusX with EXP™ auto-clutch technology. Already offered for the F650/700/800 models, and the urban-warrior G650, there are now fitments for BMW’ F750/850 and the R1200/1250 platforms. TorqDrive allows for the addition of up to four more friction disks to the clutch pack over stock. With more friction plates, as Rekluse explains it, there is more torque capacity REKLUSE-0719-PARTS MAG-ADVENTURE-HALF PAGE.pdf 10 7/10/2019 1:29:50 PM

RadiusX combines all that TorqDrive friction-disc technology, with the company’s EXP auto-clutch disk. Using the principles of centrifugal force, the EXP auto-clutch allows the rider to start and stop the bike without touching the clutch lever. The lever remains fully functional for shifting or modulating the clutch manually, but with EXP there no stalling at stops or take-offs and engagement is always smooth. ■

The RadiusX from Rekluse now offers BMW riders on F750/850 and R1200/1250 models plenty of that precise auto-clutch performance, whether it’s on the street or off-road.

High-Performance Off-Road Sprockets

Sunstar designed the Works Triplestar aluminum rear sprocket to be both reliable and lightweight. The design has been perfected through development in professional racing.

F

or motocross riders, a rear sprocket has to be both reliable and lightweight. Sunstar designed the Works Triplestar aluminum rear sprocket to meet both of those requirements, and the company has continued to perfect the design through development in professional racing.

Sunstar

Works Triplestar rear sprockets are made from aerospacegrade 7075 T-6 aluminum. That material choice combined with the carefully-engineered, classic Sunstar design provides weight savings over stock. Computer-designed weight reduction holes decrease reciprocating mass while preserving the sprocket’s1 strength and stability. Ad 8.375x5.25_PartsMag.pdf 1/31/18 4:44 PM

Each aluminum sprocket is topped with a hard-anodized coating – color options include black, blue, orange and HardAno (works finish) – to ensure added durability and a lasting like-new appearance. Sunstar’s exclusive tooth-valley design provides up to 50 percent more chain contact area. That increased interaction ensures a smooth power transfer, and it boosts the longevity of the drive components. To keep the drive running as cleanly as possible, Sunstar also designed mud grooves into the Works Triplestar sprocket. Located at the base of the tooth area on the front side only, the grooves help keep the sprocket and chain operating smoothly. Sunstar recommends using the Works Triplestar rear sprockets in conjunction with the company’s Powerdrive countershaft sprockets and MXR series chains. All of the parts are available through Parts Unlimited. ■

Steel Valve Replacements

M

any modern 4-stroke dirtbikes have come standard with titanium valves for a number of years now. While titanium valves offer a great strength-to-weight ratio, and allow for quick engine acceleration, they tend to have a shorter life span and higher cost.

Wiseco’s Garage Buddy steel valve kits are an economical way for your customers to rebuild the valve trains on their dirtbikes and ATVs.

Titanium is an expensive material that is costly to machine and requires special coatings to deal with heat and wear, making the cost high when buying replacement titanium valves from the OEM.

These kits include corresponding valve springs that are rated for the weight of the valve to keep the valve train operating like it should from the factory. As a bonus, each kit even comes with a packet of cam lube.

Wiseco’s new Garage Buddy steel valve kits are designed to be a more affordable way to refresh the valve trains on your customers’ dirtbikes or ATVs. “Steel valves are a great low-cost alternative to titanium, and offer longevity, reliability, and improved wear over titanium,” said Wiseco powersports engineer Dave Sulecki. “Some customers are not always racing their vehicles, and just want longer service intervals and the peace of mind that comes with this material.”

Even if your customer’s machine is equipped with steel valves from the factory, Garage Buddy is still a great way to save money and retain reliability. Wiseco Garage Buddy steel valve kits are available in packages for intake or exhaust, or as a complete set to cover both. Complete kits also include new, OEM-quality valve seals. ■

Bottom End Rebuild Parts

W

ProX offers everything necessary for a complete bottom-end rebuild. Those OEM-quality products are offered separately and in all-in-one-package kits that contain all the parts under one part number.

hen it comes to dirtbikes and ATVs, bottom end rebuilds can involve some of the most intimidating and expensive tasks for your customers. If they’re tackling the job themselves, it can quickly become overwhelming with the number of components that need to be replaced once the cases are split. For decades, ProX Racing Parts has aimed to provide OEM quality and performance in a more affordable and convenient package. The dedication to this value is evident in ProX’s lineup of bottom end parts offerings. Starting with the foundation of every engine, the crankshaft, ProX offers connecting rod kits for crankshaft rebuilds as well as complete, drop-in ready crankshaft

assemblies. All ProX connecting rods are doubleforged from Japanese steel and manufactured by the same suppliers used by the Japanese OEMs. ProX connecting rods are also barreled and shot peened for material consistency, and stress riser elimination, providing reliable, OEM-style performance. ProX connecting rod kits provide convenience with the bearing, pin, and washers all in one box, but the convenience is taken to the next level with ProX complete crankshaft assemblies that are now available for various popular dirtbike and ATV applications. What about the rest of the bottom end wear items? ProX has them covered with complete bottom end gasket kits, containing everything needed in one package. ProX also offers OEM quality, Japanese main bearings, available both individually and in complete bearing and seal kits. ■

Versatile Products for a Range of Riders

P

SR is proud to offer two great products that are certain to appeal to a wide swath of your customers.

Flip foot pegs

Flip foot pegs for metric sportbikes are CNC machined from forged aluminum, and feature a textured grid of rectangular ridges for excellent traction and an anodized black finish for an appearance that’s all business. As the name implies, these foot pegs can be flipped according to the rider’s preference. Flip it up to raise the foot peg 16mm higher than OE for improved ground clearance. Flip it down to lower it by 16mm compared to OE to allow more room for longer legs. Customers can also adjust the Flip further by selecting between three forward tilt settings. They’re designed to fit the OEM bracket. The patented bike tie down clamp is a perfect option for anchoring virtually any powersport vehicle during transport. The highly adaptable clamshell-style clamping mechanism instantly creates anchor points for tie-down hooks on any 1¼-inch to 1½-inch tube tube, such as a handlebar, engine guard or roll cage.

Bike tie down clamp

The clamp features an anti-slip, scratch protective rubber liner and has a large opening for single or double tie-down hooks. It is machined from forged aluminum, anodized in gunmetal finish and includes a heavy-duty spring and stainless hardware. ■
