etter look twice at our story starting on page 34 and you’ll see that S&S Cycle only built one, not two, custom Indian FTR1200s for Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties. This one carries the livery of Parts on the left and Drag on the right, perfect for the company’s use whether it sets up a display at a MotoAmerica roadrace or the AFT National TT at Sturgis. This was a pretty cool idea that came together in a collaboration with Parts Unlimited, Drag Specialties and S&S, who ultimately built the head-turning, twosided FTR1200. The graphic approach is of course not the only unique aspect of the machine – it features top-shelf aftermarket upgrades from S&S, as well as the Drag FatBook and Parts Unlimited catalogs. Another “multi-use” story in the issue is about the wide scope of Michelin’s tire line for 2020. Michelin, one of the world’s oldest motorcycle tire manufacturers, has continued to expand its selection of tires for virtually every type of motorcycle riding or racing. Michelin is the official tire of MotoGP, and this issue includes a preview of their upcoming season. The 2020 Monster Energy AMA Supercross series is now underway in America, and Supercross will start soon in Canada with its Rockstar Energy Triple Crown series. Check out the previews of both series in this issue and follow THOR riders Cooper Webb, Dylan Ferrandis and Justin Cooper in the USA and Cole Thompson and Matt Goerke in Canada. Best wishes to all of our Parts dealers in North America for a successful Spring season! ■

One of the most exciting notes about this new program is that there is no purchase necessary. That’s right, regardless of what brand gear a rider is wearing, THOR Racer Cash will be paid based on per round points, totaled at the end of each series for racers who have qualified for final points standings. See series registration for complete details. First launched in 2019, THOR Racer Cash was offered at numerous regional and local series throughout the U.S. “The response was phenomenal,” Shorter explains. “The racers and promoters are always seeking support from the best brands in the industry, but when we tell them that there is no purchase necessary to participate, they can’t believe it.” THOR is expecting to double its number of motocross and off-road racing series partners for 2020. ■

Parts Canada Supports the Sport! SPONSORSHIPS CONTINUE FOR 2020 SEASON
T
he Rockstar Energy Triple Crown is Canada’s motocross trifecta. Operated under the umbrella of the Motorsport Racing Canada (MRC), the Triple Crown launched in 2018 in Canada when motorsports fans were looking for a change and it did not disappoint. Owned by Justin Thompson, the MRC is the all-encompassing host for Canadian Pro and Amateur Motocross. Thompson was a former promoter of the National American Arenacross series who brought Arenacross to Canada in 2015. This was an exciting addition to motocross in Canada, one that Parts Canada knew would take hold. The company jumped on with a sponsorship and what a great ride it has been. After three years of Arenacross, the time to offer Canada a new format to the Outdoor Nationals seemed like the obvious next step, and the introduction of the Rockstar Energy

Triple Crown quickly became the focal point of motocross talk across the country. With a $100,000 payout to the 450 Pro rider who raced all three disciplines (Arenacross, motocross and Supercross) and collected the most points, the new series gained the traction it needed to take off. In its second year, the series has doubled its reach across a range of media platforms, as well as doubling its spectator attendance. The big news for 2019 was the addition of three hours of live television coverage on FOX Sports, reaching approximately 1 million households. Coming up on its third season as a sponsor, Parts Canada is proud to continue sponsoring the Rockstar Energy Triple Crown, and to be the title sponsor of the MRC’s amateur feeders, the Parts Canada Amateur Open and the Parts Canada Amateur Outdoor Motocross series.

III Cruiser tire offers outstanding wet grip and short stopping distances in wet conditions, which means customers who rely on their V-twin for local riding can go out in any weather with confidence. The Touring version of the tire features new architecture and a more rounded profile compared to the Commander II, providing improved stability and comfort. The new profile and tread pattern optimize the contact patch to promote excellent tread wear. In all, the Michelin Commander III Touring tire gives long-distance riders better longevity, confidence and comfort. The Michelin Commander III Cruiser tire also has a more rounded profile than the Commander II, so cornering is more stable and predictable. The front tire features an optimized groove design with a higher void ratio than its predecessor to help maximize water dispersion. Aesthetics haven’t been overlooked, either. The Commander III line features Michelin’s Premium Touch Technology. This patented sidewall design is intended to enhance the styling of a V-twin.

Boosting UTV Performance with BFGoodrich BFGoodrich offers the Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 UTV tire in five sizes, offering UTV enthusiasts more options for performance and durability in a variety of challenging conditions. The KM3 UTV tire launched in June of 2018, marking BFGoodrich’s first foray into recreational UTV tires. The KM3 was originally launched for street-legal vehicles, like Jeeps and trucks. A couple of months later, the KM3 UTV tire followed, offering the same level of toughness and traction to the UTV segment. Designed with sport and multi-purpose UTVs in mind, the KM3 UTV tire features steel-belted radial construction and balances maximum toughness with minimal weight. BFGoodrich took what it learned from the company’s first-ever UTV tire that launched in 2015, the Baja 1000-winning Baja T/A KR2, and made the BFGoodrich KM3 UTV.

Following runner-up finishes in two of the first three races of 2019, Valentino Rossi (middle) never had a podium finish since. 2020 should be a tell-tale test to determine how many more seasons he will compete.
Andrea Dovizioso (04) won twice in 2019 and ended the season ranked 2nd in points behind Marc Marquez. He and his Ducati team hope to be a stronger contender for the championship in 2020.
Alex Rins scored two wins for Suzuki in 2019, but he did not run near the front often enough to be a title chase contender. This year he and his team hope to improve on his 4th place ranking in the world points.

» 1 How will Marc Marquez hold up
Unlike previous years where the championship came down to the final race, Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez turned the 2019 title chase into a romp. En route to his 8th career world championship, Marquez delivered one of the most dominating seasons in the history of motorcycle Grand Prix racing, winning or finishing 2nd in every one of the 19 races except one (he fell at the Circuit of the Americas in the United States).

We will of course have to wait and see whether Marquez continues his domination of the sport, or if it returns to its previous offering of consistently tight racing and multiple title contenders. Key questions to be answered this year include:

fun. Riders looking to keep cool can opt for the Sahara line, which Moose Racing designed for maximum ventilation. The Qualifier rounds out the collection as a solid entry-level gear line that doesn’t sacrifice quality.
The Agroid line is completely new, and not to be confused with the M1 Agroid, which was an M1 chassis with the Agroid-themed graphic. The M1 is still part of Moose Racing’s off-road gear options for adult riders, as are the Sahara and Qualifier.
The Agroid jersey is an entirely new chassis design from Moose Racing. The goal of the new styling is to provide riders with a very flexible jersey and extreme ease of movement both on and off the bike. The athletic fit is paired with a lightweight stretch polyester material that is highly breathable. Additional breathability comes from laser-cut holes that enhance ventilation.
The Agroid’s high-performance features make it ideal for the extreme riding conditions found in competition, while the M1 is a durable, all-around gear line that can tackle the track or trail, whether it’s for racing or just for
The fabric also dries quickly, helping to pull moisture away from the skin to keep the rider dry and comfortable. The Agroid has all of the quality details one would expect in a premium jersey, including a stretch collar

The knees in the Agroid pants feature a double-layer system that has extended leather inner and outer knee guard panels.

and non-restrictive stretch mini cuffs that keep sleeves in place without binding. The high-quality sublimated graphics will maintain their colors, wash after wash. Like the jersey, the Agroid pants are designed for excellent flexibility so a rider can move as easily as possible on the bike, even in extreme riding conditions. The chassis begins with a lightweight, durable stretch woven polyester that is topped with stretch ripstop polyester panels on the knees and seat. The pants, which are pre-bent for an ergonomic fit on the bike, have a stretch area in the knee that allows them to fit over knee braces or guards while still providing a slim, streamlined fit. The knees also feature a double-layer system that has extended leather inner and outer knee guard panels, adding another touch of durability in critical areas. The Agroid pants share some traits with their jersey counterpart, including laser-cut ventilation holes and non-fading, breathable sublimated graphics. A three-point waist adjustment system allows a rider to fine-tune the fit, and a YKK zipper tops off the list of perks. The Agroid jersey and pants are complemented by the Agroid glove, which is also designed for flexibility to provide a performance fit that doesn’t hinder a rider’s grip. The stretch polyester backhand, outseam finger construction and a pre-curved finger design all combine to provide dexterity and comfort. A single-layer Clarino palm offers improved feel and airflow while providing a strong barrier between the rider’s palm and the outside world. The Sahara gear is for riders who need to beat the heat. Both the jersey and pants are made of a highly ventilated
polyester mesh chassis to ensure the best airflow possible. The jersey has an athletic fit paired with stretch materials for a full range of motion. On the pants, high-denier polyester reinforcements in key areas add support, as do the leather inner knee panels. The mesh knee panels have an updated structure that promotes improved ventilation. The M1 gear line is the answer for riders who want solid, quality gear that is versatile and durable. Now available in six new colorways, the athletic styling of the M1 jersey is enhanced by improved ventilation thanks to micromesh panels. The quick-drying fabric features sublimated graphics. The M1 pants are made of a high-denier polyester chassis with double- and triple-stitched seams and a reinforced seat panel to ensure strength. The pattern on the knee panels promotes better ventilation and flexibility, while the pre-bent legs are comfortable right from the start. The three-point waist adjustment system keeps the pants in place. The entry-level Qualifier gear also has new colorways this year. The jersey’s generous cut ensures comfort and a full range of movement on the bike. The finishing touches include a stretch collar and mini-cuffs. The matching Qualifier pants have double stitching on the polyester chassis, and there is a reinforced panel on each knee for additional abrasion resistance. Multiple stretch panels further enhance a rider’s ease of movement. ■

From Daytona to Bonneville, NHRA drag strips to the Supercross starting gate, professional engine builders and race teams trust and rely on JE’s products to build powerful and reliable engines. JE pistons aren’t just for pros, however. With this new partnership between JE Pistons and Parts Unlimited, privateers, weekend warriors, and regular riders now have access to JE’s wide array of high-quality piston products. Piston kits (which include wrist pins, circlips, and piston rings) are currently in stock and available for quick delivery. One such example is its Pro Series pistons, which offer your customers high performance and strength, thanks to extensive engineering and research and development. In fact, the Parts Unlimited sales rep force has recently received samples for the Yamaha YZ250F with applications for 2014 to 2018 model years. These are pistons that were developed with processes and techniques refined through years of working with professional race teams like Pro Circuit Kawasaki and JGRMX/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing. Feature-rich and performance driven, every Pro Series kit contains a variety of enhancements geared toward avid racers. Newer model motocross bikes and higher horsepower applications get the added benefit of JE’s forged side relief design. This process is actually done at the forging stage. Material remains on the vital areas of the piston skirt – essentially on the major and minor thrust sides of the cylinder – while material is left off the non-critical areas of the piston.

Another feature of the Pro Series pistons is the accumulator groove, which is located below the top ring land. The V-shaped groove cut between the ring grooves helps combat ring flutter by giving excess gases a place to go. The feature-rich Pro Series line contains all of the latest and greatest technologies needed for a serious racer. From dedicated forgings, to internal and external bracing, and to internal milling for weight reduction and additional strength, Pro Series pistons are full of benefits. The Pro Series line is geared toward serious racers who demand great performance out of their engines. JE Pistons accomplished this by keeping the strength of the piston while reducing weight. The Yamaha YZ250F pistons that were included in the rep samples are available in three compression ratios – 13.5:1, 14.0:1 and 14.5:1 – all in a standard bore size of 77mm. Whether your customers are looking to breathe new life into a tired old engine, or you have committed racers aiming to assemble a race-winning motor, you can’t go wrong pointing them toward JE Pistons. ■

Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties and S&S Cycle teamed up here to create one of the most exciting bikes of the year, a genuine Flat Tracking Hooligan take on the wildest little Indian. Although there are plenty of S&S one-offs everywhere on this FTR, that tough-look 1Grand National 2-into-2 exhaust is right out of the catalog.

hey’re fast, they’re fun, they’re affordable and, even in stock form, the new Indian FTR 1200 looks exactly like what it is, a flat-track racer with a license plate on it. Inspired by those supersuccessful Wrecking Crew Indian AFT Twins, the FTR 1200 is quickly becoming a rider favorite. Not only have these bikes scratched the itch of sport-minded V-twin riders, they’ve lit a hot fire under sport-minded riders, period. The reasons are obvious. A full-cradle frame, horsepower numbers topping 120, full adjustable suspension systems, state-of-art electronics with Sport, Standard, and Rain modes available on the S-model versions – all that and more comes packaged in the FTR 1200. And, it only got better when a trio of industry giants – Parts Unlimited, Drag Specialties and S&S Cycle – came together to lift this Indian to the next level. With a makeover aimed at sparking the excitement of both traditional V-twin riders

and sportbike enthusiasts alike, this special build is the kind of bike that’ll capture powersports excitement across the board. “A lot of the credit for conceiving this triple-branded cover bike belongs to the folks at Drag Specialties,” says S&S Cycle VP of marketing David Zemla. “They came up with the general idea, and S&S drew up an initial rendering. Between the two of us the overall design really came together filling everyone’s need.” Already contracted to put together a small batch of FTR 1200s as hooligan racers, the build was done in-house by S&S Cycles in Viola, WI. Top-to-bottom, tip-to-tail, the Indian’s been extensively modified in that currently popular flat-track/hooligan style. “We made use of a lot of the pieces S&S originally developed for that limited run of FTRs,” Zemla explains. The triple clamps and gauge mount, the gas tank, the rear seat unit and the swingarm are all S&S one-offs.

One side reads Parts Unlimited, the other side Drag Specialties and there’s an S&S Cycle logo on the tail. All three companies played a part in this good-time conversion.
One of the biggest changes, time-wise, came with the side plates and the one-off S&S hooligan rear-sets on them. “In order to get the foot controls positioned right for the hooligan/flat track theme, they had to be moved,” Zemla adds. No easy task, as it turns out. The FTR’s OE footpegs and foot-control mounts are built into the side plates which meant new mounts had to be machined in-house positioning the pegs and controls in the new, desired positions. It was a bit of business requiring something like two days of careful machining for each new mount. Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties weren’t left idle during all of this. Along with all those one-off S&S additions plenty more came out of the FatBook and Street catalogs. Along with the S&S Cycle 1Grand National 2-into-2 high-mount

As an established specialty tool company, Apo Tool has collaborated with manufacturers like Aprilia, BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha, among others. In fact, Apo Tool’s involvement in the motorcycle industry runs so deep that the company has created a dedicated motorcycle brand called Bikeservice. Stereo Amplifier (2 x 100W/1 Ohm), PXA300.4 4-Channel (4 x 75W/2 Ohm), and PXA500.1 Mono Sub Amp (1 x 500W/2 Ohm).
KICKER designed its PX-Series amps to be weatherproof and tough enough for the harsh environments that powersports riders encounter. A weatherproof wiring harness and aluminum casing keep out water, dirt and mud.
KICKER PX amps utilize a speaker (amplified) or low (pre-amp)-level input, variable input gain adjustment and two auto turn-on modes (DC offset or 12-volt trigger). The PX-Series Monoblock Amps include a 24dB/octave, subsonic filter fixed at 25 hertz and a selectable, on/off bass boost of +6 decibels centered at 40 hertz. The 200.1 and 500.1 subwoofer amps include a wired bass dial that easily mounts to a vehicle’s dash, allowing a rider to control the bass on the go with just a fingertip.

ICKER knows that big sound doesn’t have to come from a big amplifier. The company’s PX-Series amplifiers are specially designed to deliver big power from a tiny device, making them an excellent choice for powersports enthusiasts who want to upgrade their audio system without altering the stock look of their bike. PX amplifiers will mount virtually anywhere on a bike, UTV or other small vehicle. The four amplifier models available in the PX-Series all measure less than 8¼-inches long and less than 15/8-inches tall, which means they can be tucked away in a variety of spots. The high-power, low-current-draw design means that the amps are ideal for a vehicle with a small battery or other small charging system. Additionally, PX amps utilize a differential audio circuit that reduces engine noise in the audio system for low THD (total harmonic distortion) and superb clarity even at high volumes. The small size, low power requirement and clear sound all add up to an ideal powersports audio amp. The four KICKER PX amps include the PXA200.1 Mono Subwoofer Amplifier (1 x 200W/0.5 Ohm), PXA200.2

Meanwhile, both the 300.4 and 500.1 amps utilize Class-D technology for power efficiency. In addition to being ultra-efficient, the amps remain cool to the touch during operation. KICKER designed the amps to be weatherproof and tough enough for the harsh environments that powersports riders encounter. A weatherproof wiring harness and aluminum casing keep out water, dirt and mud. Inside, a conformal coating on the circuit board provides an additional layer of moisture resistance. Each KICKER amp includes rustproof stainless-steel mounting hardware and a single Molex plug that contains all of the wiring connections necessary. ■

Dirt Digger Clutches Upgrades for Off-Roading
Your off-road riding customers – whether on two wheels or four – give their machines’ clutches a serious beating. When it comes time for a replacement, let them know about the Barnett upgrade – high-end clutches that offer long-lasting performance.
W
hen it comes to clutch work, off-road motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs are the machines that take a real pounding. For racers that’s pretty much a given; in the heat of serious competition an OE clutch pack can wear out in no time flat. Even weekend warriors, sport and Adventure riders, and ATV/UTV users of all types can be just as tough on a clutch. Your off-road riders demand a lot from their clutches, and when it comes time for a replacement, Barnett has upgraded and high-performance clutch options that are a marked improvement over the OE setup. Barnett’s Dirt Digger clutch kits, and the steel-faced aluminum pressure plates and super-duty clutch baskets that go with them, are exactly the kind of high-performing, long-lasting upgrade off-road riders look for. These Barnett clutch packages are tight grabbing and reliably slip free. They’re easily controlled and modulated, the lever effort is never a hard pull and all that performance will last for a good, long while. There are direct-fit applications for all the popular off-road motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs right up to current-year machines and Parts Unlimited has them all. The Dirt Digger clutch packs are a big step up from OE all by themselves. They feature carbon fiber and Kevlar friction plates, precision-ground and tempered-steel

drive plates and heavy-duty, shot-peened and heattreated springs that are 10 percent to 15 percent stiffer than OEM. With all those features, you know that a Dirt Digger upgrade delivers a much stronger, longer lasting clutch with positive engagement. Every kit is checked for an exact stack height before it’s shipped so there’s always an easy, drop-in fit. Barnett’s pressure plates and clutch baskets take things to the next level. The pressure plates are machined from top-quality billet aluminum and feature a tempered-steel friction surface guaranteed to never wear out. A Barnett pressure plate dissipates heat better than an OE unit, thus lowering clutch temperatures and further extending clutch life. Completing the package is a Barnett clutch basket, which features replaceable stainless-steel inserts that ensures super-smooth clutch operation. The baskets also have custom-machined oil-passage windows for increased oil flow to further lower operating temperatures and extend clutch life. Off-roaders need tough clutches, and a Barnett Dirt Digger pressure plate, billet basket package delivers what these riders need. ■

Beefy Brake Performance Tall Rotors for Better Stopping
When your go-fast customers upgrade their performance UTVs with bigger tires, point them toward Trinity Racing’s new 330mm tall brake rotors. They’re designed to provide extra braking power to that increased weight and rotational mass.
T
he performance UTV market is growing at a steady rate, as is the Trinity Racing product line. Trinity started out as a high-performance engine builder before it turned to designing and building stylish and power-boosting exhausts. Now, as the market continues to mature, so does the brand. Trinity has expanded its product line to include new 330mm tall brake rotors that are designed to provide extreme stopping power to today’s range of high-powered UTVs.
Trinity Racing’s new 330mm tall brake rotors are designed to provide extreme stopping power for today’s range of performance UTVs, especially those outfitted with bigger tires.
In the world of performance motorsports, stopping quickly is just as important as quick acceleration and UTVs are notorious for having undersized brakes. This is an especially big factor when your customers are upgrading to tires that are 30-inches to 35-inches tall. With increased tire size comes increased weight and rotational mass, and when it comes to performance, every pound matters. Next, load up that UTV with passengers, an aftermarket cage, spare tires and other accessories and that vehicle’s stopping distance is a lot further than it was with the stock setup. That’s where Trinity’s tall rotors come into place by helping to improve overall braking power. In addition to that great stopping ability, the rotors also offer increased cooling, slower brake fade and will help keep the pads from glazing over. The rotors are 30 percent larger and 10 percent wider than stock rotors, and feature extra ventilation cuts.

OE Tires on 34 Motorcycle Models The 2020 Ducati Panigale V4’s high-performance handling comes thanks to the OEM’s precision design and engineering and a set of Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tires.
P
irelli tires are going to be rolling into a lot of showrooms as the original equipment tire on 2020 models. Nine motorcycle manufacturers have opted for Pirelli as an OE tire provider this year. In all, seven Pirelli tires will be original equipment on an impressive 34 models, ranging from classic cruisers to powerful naked bikes and even electric motorcycles. The MT 60 RS is one of the two OE tires on 2020 Indian Motorcycle models. The Scout Bobber and the MT 60 RS are a good match with their respective performance and design characteristics. Meanwhile, the Indian Scout will arrive in showrooms equipped with the Pirelli Night Dragon tire. The Night Dragon already enjoys popularity among custom cruiser and V-twin riders, and now the 2020 Scout can benefit from the tire’s excellent grip, high mileage and good balance between reliability and performance.
In the supersport category, the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP and Diablo Rosso Corsa II tires will be gracing motorcycles like the Ducati Streetfighter V4 and Panigale, MV Augusta RUSH 1000 and Brutale 1000 RR, Aprilia RS 660 and Triumph Street Triple RS. Pirelli’s venerated sport tire, the Diablo Rosso III, will be on everything from Italian sport bikes to cutting-edge electric bikes. Italy will be well-represented by the Ducati Diavel 1260 and Monster 1200S, MV August Brutale 800 Rosso and Aprilia Tuono V4 1000. Energica Motor Company, Zero Motorcycles and Tacita will all be utilizing the Diablo Rosso III on select electric motorcycle models, including the Energica Ego+ and Eva Ribelle, Zero SR/F and Tacita T-Cruise Urban and T-Cruise Turismo. The timeless style of the Pirelli Phantom Sportscomp can be found as OE on two unique 2020 bikes from Triumph, including the Bonneville Bud Elkins T120 and the T100 Special Editions. Energica has upgraded to a new power unit for its 2020 models, and the improved performance on the Eva EsseEsse9+ will get an added boost from the Sportscomp tires. Pirelli’s Scorpion Trail II, MT 60 RS and MT 60 tires are the brand’s enduro street and enduro on/off-road choices, and they can be found on bikes like the 2020 Ducati Scrambler Icon Dark, MV Augusta Turismo Veloce 800 Rosso, and Zero Motorcycles DSR Black Forest Edition. All seven of the Pirelli tires that will be OE on 2020 models are already in stock with Parts Unlimited, and you can order them in a wide range of other sizes for applications beyond factory replacement tires. ■

or those parts of the country where it’s legal to convert an off-road UTV for street-legal use, Moose Utility Division has an all-in-one solution for dealers and their customers. The company’s new street kit helps off-road vehicles take to the tarmac. Because converting off-road vehicles is not legal in all states, dealers should check local regulations or specific requirements for their areas before working with customers to use the new kit. Moose Utility Division designed this all-new version of its street kit (p/n 2020-1883) to be nearly universal and absolutely complete – the kit comes with all of the lights, turn signals, horn, connections, switches, wiring and brackets necessary to get going. The kit also includes highly-detailed and illustrated instructions to ensure installation goes easily and looks professional. The kit comes with a Badlands turn signal module with a built-in load equalizer. Features include run/brake/turn functions and an 11-second auto-cancel. The module converts an off-road vehicle’s stock tail lights to the run/ brake/turn setup. There are a total of six LEDs included in the kit – three for the front left and three for the front right. The stylish light housings are easy to mount to the front of a UTV. The license plate mounting bracket also features LEDs for added brightness. The bracket includes the hardware

necessary for installation. Moose Utility Division also offers a solderless connector kit that’s available separately. Chances are good that a vehicle venturing onto the road is going to encounter other traffic, which means it needs to be heard as well as seen. The snail-style horn included in the street kit has 115 decibels of sound. The turn signals, horn and hazard lights are all easily controlled with included rocker switches that have LED backlighting so a rider can find the right switch at a glance. An included 3-gang mounting bracket and prewired setup means the rocker switches are 100 percent plug-and-play. The switches can be mounted just about anywhere on the dash, either as a group or in different locations. The setup is especially useful for UTV applications that do not have an exposed steering column. (Riders who want to mount the switches to a steering column can use Moose Utility Division’s other street kit, p/n 2020-1752.) The street kit also includes a complete wiring harness, with all of the main wires already cut to length and the connectors installed. That means there is minimal splicing and crimping required to make the street conversion even easier. ■

Helmet Helper
Amping Up the Airflite with MIPS
T
he new Airflite Stealth helmet from Icon doesn’t have flashy graphics or bright colors, but it is without a doubt one of the most important helmets in the company’s history. Underneath the all-black finish is the MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS), making the Airflite Stealth the first helmet from Icon to have the revolutionary system. The short version of how the MIPS BPS works is that it is designed to reduce harmful forces transmitted to the brain by allowing a slight uncoupled movement of the shell and liner during a crash. MIPS is a Swedish company and its state-of-the-art BPS was developed for helmets across a wide range of sports and activities. The longer version of how it works is that the BPS is a thin, low-friction layer that is inserted between the shell and the EPS liner on a helmet, in this case the Airflite Stealth. If a rider crashes and the helmet hits the ground at an angle, that low-friction layer allows a slight sliding motion in all directions. By doing that, there is a reduction in the rotational motion that is transmitted to the brain during the impact, which in turn helps to reduce the risk of brain injury. The Airflite Stealth shares the detailed features of Icon’s Airflite line, which meets Icon’s World Standard requirements and has DOT, ECE and PSC approval.

The sleek Airflite Stealth starts with a reduced profile for the injection-molded Polycarbonate shell, which gives a more aerodynamic shape and saves weight. The neckline is carefully shaped to prevent a jacket or suit collar from hindering head movement. The sleek profile pairs perfectly with the distinctive retrofuture styling of the face shield. This fog-free FliteShield is designed not just to look edgy but also to enable quick shield changes. A tinted Icon DropShield inside the Airflite can be lowered into place on sunny days. It operates via a lever on the outside of the helmet, which makes raising and lowering the DropShield easy even with gloves on. The helmet’s ventilation system helps a rider keep a cool head. The four intake vents, including a motocrossinspired chin-bar vent, channel air through the EPS foam liner and out through two exhaust vents in the rear. Still, riding can be hard work, so the moisture-wicking HydraDry liner helps reduce heat and moisture buildup, and it can be removed and washed if things get stinky. ■

Galfer also has brake rotors and pads for off-road, sport and dual-sport applications. The pads are made at the company’s home in Spain. The rotors get their start there, too, before being built in the U.S. The Parts Unlimited catalog features three different brake pad compounds that provide excellent quality and performance for various braking needs. The 1054 Black brake pads have a semi-metallic compound that is ideal as a direct OEM replacement. Riders who want a bit more braking power than the OEM pads can opt for the 1370 series. Racing-focused riders and track day enthusiasts can choose the 1375 compound for competition-level braking capabilities.
eing a family business does not equal being a small business. From Europe to North America, Galfer has a wide reach and a wide range of braking components.
Galfer USA is the North American arm of Galfer Brakes, the company that was founded by Maffio Milesi more than 70 years ago in Italy. Today, his grandson Sandro Milesi oversees a team of 25 employees at Galfer USA, handling everything from R&D to customer and dealer support. All of the Galfer brake lines are designed and produced in-house at Galfer USA’s headquarters in Carson City, Nevada. There are hundreds of applications available, from motocross to road racing, and all of the street and offroad riding disciplines in between. In fact, there are 1,800 applications available through Parts Unlimited, including both ABS and non-ABS options. Brake lines come with Galfer’s lifetime warranty and a perfect fit, and each kit includes all of the necessary hardware. Instructions are available online for 24/7 step-by-step guidance.
In addition to its standard-sized rotors, Galfer also has two oversize rotor kits available – one floating and one solid-mount – for off-road, dual-sport and motocross applications. The floating oversize rotor kit includes a Galfer WAVE® 270mm rotor plus a mounting bracket and brake pads. The setup is the same one currently used by many AMA Supercross teams for its ability to provide strong, consistent braking lap after lap. The solid-mount oversize rotor is also 270mm, and it comes complete with a caliper relocation bracket. Galfer USA’s presence is new in the Parts Unlimited catalogs this year. A complete chart helps dealers easily select the right braking setup for off-road, dual-sport, sportbike and metric cruiser applications. Dealers who need any additional guidance with parts or installations can get support from Galfer USA’s full-time tech department. ■

Based in the small Northern Italy town of Asolo and with the perennial Alpine star flower as its namesake, Sante began producing the first products bearing the Alpinestars name. At that time a new sport called motocross was establishing itself and becoming quite popular across Europe. Sante saw an opportunity to apply his talents and technical acumen to design a new type of footwear that would meet the protective needs and demands of this beautiful, yet brutal, form of athleticism. A new benchmark for protective footwear was born, and this revolutionary boot became the archetype for motocross protection. Each MXR chain is made from TripleStar treated ultra-hard pins, which adds strength and durability. In fact, all of the chain components are heat-treated to ensure a high tensile strength. Despite all of that strength, an MXR chain is still a lighter weight option than stock, making it an attractive choice for off-road racers who need to save every ounce possible. Seamless rollers and bushings help add to the chain’s life. An MXR chain is easy to spot thanks to the deep gold inner and outer side plates. Each MXR Works chain comes complete with a clip-type connecting link, although Sunstar offers both clip and rivet connecting links separately, too. raking’s EPTA on-road and off-road rotors might be made in Italy, but they are helping professional teams across the USA win races and championships.
The list of Braking’s sponsored teams for 2020 features some of the top names in their respective sports. The Yamaha team is trusting EPTA on-road brake discs in AMA Superbike. In Supercross, the EP Monster Energy/Star Yamaha and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory teams are running the EPTA off-road discs. The 250cc class also includes Brakingequipped Kawasaki Pro Circuit Racing. Other sponsored racers include Tyler Bowers in 450cc class, Monster Energy Kawasaki in Junior Cup, Beau Baron in WORCS USA Off-Road Trophy and Adam McGill in GNCC side-by-side. Braking’s EPTA on-road and off-road rotors are favorites of professional riders across the USA thanks to their racewinning performance.
Clearly, Braking is hoping to add to its current tally of 124 world racing titles. The EPTA – which stands for Enhanced Performance Torque Application – on-road and off-road discs feature a braking track that provides optimal heat dissipation, ensuring a steady friction coefficient for predicable, consistent braking characteristics. The design of the disc accomplishes this by providing more controlled radial/axial movement so that there is a better load transfer between the braking track and the carrier. The temperature of the disc remains consistent across the entire surface to eliminate any hot spots. That load transfer is a direct one between the rotor and the hub thanks to a pin-free design, which eliminates any potential pin deformation. Since weight savings is always an important factor in racing, the EPTA discs are also designed for an optimal weight-to-performance ratio. ■

Bulletproof Bearing
A Big Difference for Differentials
The HubHornet from B-L Tech corrects worn-out drive hub assemblies on a variety of Polaris ATVs and UTVs. The precision bearing will keep drive hubs aligned and is designed to work with heavy-duty roller cages, armature plates and bearing kits.
T
here’s an approximately 1-inch long hollow bushing that sits inside the front differential drive hub assembly on a Polaris vehicle. Despite being such a small part, it can cause a lot of big problems. B-L Tech manufactures the HubHornet to replace that center bushing, turning a potential problem into a bulletproof front end. The HubHornet fits virtually every 4WD Polaris ATV and UTV model since 2012, with the exception of the EV, RS-1 and Turbo S models. It is especially beneficial on the RZR, where extreme driving requires extreme reliability. When a stock center bushing ceases to perform correctly, it can make the front differential noisy, cause oil to leak out of the side seals or let dirt, debris and water into the system. Even worse, a failing bushing can cause the vehicle to shift into 4WD by itself or not engage reliably. A good sign that the stock bushing needs to be replaced is any of the above symptoms or when the inner CV joints of the front axle wiggle up and down more than 1/16 of an inch. B-L Tech made the HubHornet to provide an affordable, durable upgrade over the stock bushing. The HubHornet is a precision bearing made of top-quality materials that will keep the drive hubs aligned with each other to ensure everything works as intended. By properly aligning the drive hubs, the differential will run more quietly and last far longer – in fact it’s guaranteed to last for the life of the vehicle.
In testing, B-L Tech found that after 2,000 miles of hard driving, a HubHornet had less play (going back to those bouncy CV joints) than a brand-new stock bushing. A lot of that testing was done in collaboration with WORCS Series race teams. B-L Tech worked with more than a dozen Polaris racers and monitored their HubHornet-equipped vehicles. In 2018, along with collecting valuable data about the reliability of the HubHornet, B-L Tech also rode along to two WORCS class championships and a long list of race wins. Mud racers have reported that the HubHornet keeps water out of their diffs and improves diff engagement, an improvement over the leak-prone stock setup, and now the secret is out among rock crawlers and even UTV rental companies. Commercial ATV/UTV users (farmers, ranchers, miners, etc.) who drive their Polaris vehicles long and hard are also seeing improvements in front differential longevity and reliability. It’s no surprise that B-L Tech would focus on the racing industry to prove the HubHornet’s prowess. Founders Don Bair and Rod Lingren both have racing backgrounds. Bair is a retired mechanical engineer while Lingren is a retired designer and artist. The two of them partnered in 2014 to found Bair-Ling Technologies, or B-L Tech, to design and produce drivetrain components. The HubHornet is the company’s first product for the UTV market. ■
