uch has changed in this world since our last issue, but what hasn’t changed is the passion that motorcycle riders have for the sport and the thrill of the ride. With millions of people across America couch-bound, many first responders have been riding their motorcycles to work, while others have been busy in their garages getting their motorcycles detailed for what is expected to be a great summer of riding. We are hearing also that motorcycle retailers are getting busy servicing customer’s machines, some so busy they are looking to hire more mechanics. Our cover story in this issue is about Saddlemen, the worldfamous seat maker that is making some major investments in production, stocking and shipment equipment and procedures to ensure that Parts Unlimited has their seats in stock when you order them. Be sure to give their story a read beginning on page 22. Another big story in this issue is about the kick-off of a major new product category for Parts Unlimited…E-bikes! Don’t miss the details starting on page 30 about the new Tazer MX electric pedal assist bicycles from INTENSE LLC, a manufacturer of mountain bikes since 1991 based in Temecula, California. The Tazer MX E-bikes and a line of parts, accessories and apparel will be available through Parts Unlimited, opening up a whole new market for motorcycle dealers to get people on two wheels. Having been involved in motorcycling my whole life, I can honestly say this is the closest thing I can recall to compare to the early 1960s when Honda arrived in America with the little step thru 50s and 90s. We all know what a boom was that was for the motorcycle industry and I can see this happening again with E-bikes. Lastly, the coronavirus pandemic has caused many sporting and racing events to be cancelled or postponed. The good news is things are loosening up and new revised dates are finally being announced. In our News section, we have many updates to take note of. By the time you are reading this, some events will have already run. It’s all coming back. Retailing will be a little different as the public and authorities will be watching for serious attention to the distancing-related practices you offer in your stores. Do it right and show your customers you care about their health and safety. ■

MotoAmerica Reschedules Superbike Speedfest EVENT SET FOR OCTOBER 23-26 AT WEATHERTECH RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA

M

otoAmerica has announced that it has rescheduled the GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Speedfest at Monterey to October 23-25 due to the still-unresolved rules regarding spectator events in California with the COVID-19 pandemic.

The weekend includes seven classes of racing plus the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers V-twin Invitational, Motorcycle Swap Meet, Motorcycle Show and Motorcycle Hill Climb. “With the way things are in California right now, there is no way we can race with spectators at Laguna Seca in July,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “Thus, we’ve decided to reschedule the event for October and allow our fans the time to change their travel plans and make new ones that include the Speedfest at Monterey this fall. As always, the safety of our fans, our teams and our riders are of the utmost importance to us and postponing the race is our best option to ensure that.” The original date at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca called for the race to be the third round of the 2020 MotoAmerica Series. With the change, the GEICO Motorcycle Superbike Speedfest at Monterey will be the ninth round of the 10-round series – two weeks after the October 9-11 round at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. ■

onster Energy AMA Supercross resumed racing at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 31, for a seven-race series that runs through June 21. The final seven, made-for-TV races will be broadcast on NBC networks without fans in attendance.

Like all forms of sports, the Monster Energy Supercross Championship was abruptly halted in early March after completing ten rounds of the 17-round Championship. The last race was held on March 7 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The racing format was adjusted to reduce the number of athletes to stay within the minimum requirements. A standard race format will be used for all seven rounds, except for the finale that will be an Eastern/Western Regional 250SX Class Showdown. Supercross Race Format for Final Seven Rounds: • 450SX Class – 40 Riders based on current point standings and 2020 top 100 number or combined season qualifying results • 250SX Class – 40 Riders based on current point standings and 2020 top 100 number or combined season qualifying results • Two qualifying sessions will be held for gate pick • 250SX Class – Two Heat Races and a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) • 250SX Class Main Event • 450SX Class – Two Heat Races and a Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) • 450SX Class Main Event

In the final seven races, three champions will be crowned – one in the 450SX Class and one each in the 250SX Eastern and Western Regional Classes. ■

American Flat Track Returns! FOCUS ON FAN ATTENDANCE, NEW HEALTH AND SAFETY FEATURES

A

merican Flat Track has relaunched its 2020 race schedule to feature doubleheader race weekends. The revised schedule features 18 races over nine doubleheader weekends, and culminates in a two-day finale during Biketoberfest in Daytona Beach. The series kicks off on July 17-18 with the Volusia Half-Mile at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida. In addition to NBC Sports coverage on NBCSN and live streaming of all 18 events via TrackPass on NBC Sports Gold, AFT has worked diligently toward the goal of having fan attendance at all of its venues. This would include the implementation of new health and safety protocols that will help provide a safe environment for all, including reduced capacity, staggered seating, mobile ticketing, cashless transactions and enhanced sanitation. AFT officials continue to collaborate with public health experts to develop this comprehensive plan in accordance with all federal, state and local requirements. All race-day procedures have been thoroughly reviewed and will continue to be examined and updated to follow specific guidelines set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local authorities.

ALL AFT EVENTS NEW GUIDELINES AND PROTOCOLS WILL INCLUDE:

• Reduction in ticket availability to conform with state and local guidelines for sporting events • Reserved seating areas to include buffer zones to provide ample space between fans • Fans entering the venue will be provided with complimentary facial coverings • Enhanced sanitation and disinfection protocols with frequent cleaning throughout the facility • Enhancements to mobile ticketing and elimination of printed tickets • Cashless, contactless transactions for concessions and merchandise • Regular medical screening of staff and competitors

As an additional precaution, there will be no public access to the paddock area and AFT officials have suspended Fan Walk, rider autograph sessions and paddock upgrades for the remainder of the season. Through an updated communication protocol, AFT and its promoter partners will provide regular updates to fans via press releases, website updates, social media posts, email distribution and text messaging. Careful consideration has been given to secure a full 18-round race schedule that is logistically possible for riders, teams and staff, while also providing the opportunity for fan attendance. ■

Parts Canada rider Tomas Casas rounded up several Latin American motocross championships in his native Bogota before emigrating to Canada. Once there he set his sights on road-racing and quickly rose through the ranks while claiming more victories.

Rider in Waiting RACING IN THE TIME OF CORONA

L

ike many professional motorcycle racers, Tomas Casas started his career at an early age on a smalldisplacement bike. Though he doesn’t remember very much about his first race (he was 4 years old at the time), he does remember his first ride and how he had to be rescued from mid-way up a jump at a motocross track in Bogota, Colombia.

His Latin American motocross experience exempted him from age restrictions for the school, and he was quickly being led around the track on a Honda CBR125 by Canadian Pro racer, Kenny Reidmann. Shortly after, Tomas was old enough to acquire a race license for the CBR250 Shannonville regional series. He finished 3rd in the championship and the following year claimed the title.

The Parts Canada rider was born in Bogota in 1999 and emigrated with his family to Canada when he was 10. With several Latin American motocross championships already won, he was eyeing his opportunity for new rivals. In Canada, he discovered a road-racing school at Shannonville Motorsport Park, just 90 minutes from his new home.

His next target was the Amateur Sportbike 600 championship and Tomas claimed it his first season, with his eyes already on the ProSport 600 title. The young teenager adjusted to Pro status easily, winning the Rookie of the Year, and gaining some attention through his sponsorship with Yamaha. Tomas received one of his most prized accomplishments when he continued on page 18...

was selected to be Canada’s first rider to attend the coveted VR46 Master Camp in Tavullia, Italy. The boot-camp training, and meeting his idol, Valentino Rossi himself, elevated Tomas to a new level and he became Canada’s Pro Sport champion for the next two years. Now focusing on becoming Canada’s Superbike Champion with continued sponsorship from Parts Canada, Tomas finds himself facing a new challenge – Covid-19. Athletes around the world paused their training and competition. Life in the time of Covid-19 is not normal. While Tomas has spent his whole life confronting the typical obstacles of an up-and-coming racer – forgoing a regular adolescence, exhausting training, securing sponsorships, scrambling to line up parts, equipment and a budget – facing down a pandemic has proven challenging.

With the 2020 race season in limbo due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, Tomas is contemplating how to tackle his dream of becoming Canada's Superbike Champion.

In 2018, Tomas clinched his second consecutive Liqui Moly Pro Sport Bike National Championship by winning race six of the series at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville.

With life on hold in Canada – and across the globe – Tomas and his cohort are now trying to figure out exactly what’s next. Canadian weather already shortens the northern race season, so, can a season further pared down by a pandemic even be considered a National Championship? Tomas is wondering if some racers will even be able to afford to race given the loss of so many jobs. How about the lack of proper training or accessing parts and gear? All of it combined has Tomas considering if a 2020 race season is even a possibility.

When asked about what’s next, Tomas said he is waiting it out for the immediate future. He’s still trying to build his bikes, keep fit and secure sponsorships to prepare for what could be some kind of a 2020 race season. While the racing world remains tenuous, Tomas is keeping his eyes on the prize – his long-term goal is to be a Canadian Superbike Champion and beyond that, find his way to an international stage and become a World Champion. ■

Saddlemen has undergone a major overhaul of its manufacturing capabilities at the company’s headquarters in Long Beach, California. Improved technology and equipment will allow Saddlemen to greatly increase the number of seat fitments it produces.

M

perfectly on a bike. The method has changed a bit, but the final result has not, and longtime customers can expect the same handcrafted quality and comfort that has made the brand so popular.

From the R&D Department to the way a seat is tracked throughout its production, Saddlemen has been upgrading and optimizing every step of the manufacturing process. Today, Saddlemen has 80 employees who use the latest technology to create comfortable, durable seats that fit

Some of the Saddlemen seats that are the most in demand for metric bikes right now include fitments for the BMW 1200GS and R1250GS, Honda Africa Twin, GL1800 and F6B, KTM 1090/1190/1290, Yamaha R1 and Bolt, and Suzuki DL650/100. There are, of course, many more available metric applications, and even more on the way.

ore than 30 years after the company’s founding, the team at Saddlemen is still dedicated to providing a more comfortable riding experience to every motorcyclist. In fact, the company’s seats are available to more riders than ever before thanks to a major overhaul at the Saddlemen headquarters in Long Beach, California. Improved technology and more streamlined processes mean that Saddlemen can produce seats for more fitments than at any other time in its history.

While Saddlemen’s roots are firmly in the V-twin market, the company also has a big lineup of products – ranging from seats to luggage options – for metric bikes. Now that the Saddlemen factory has been fully optimized, the company will be able to continue growing its metric fitments.

COVER STORY

R&D REVAMP Before the manufacturing process can begin, it’s important to have an R&D department that can design and prototype a seat with ease and precision. Saddlemen has added a 3D scanner that will scan up to 27 cubic feet with an accuracy of 0.030mm. There are also two new 3D printers, one of which is capable of printing parts to 40 inches x 40 inches x 50 inches in size. The 3D technology pairs with the software programs Solidworks and Geomagic, which enable quick conversion from a scanned mesh file to a solid object. By combining all of these tools, Saddlemen can bring a seat to market in half the time, with a higher build quality. When compared to the previous development process, it’s easy to see why 3D technology is such a time-saver. In the past, Saddlemen would create a baseplate comprised of OEM pieces and layered sheet waxing. A long backand-forth process of fitting it to the bike and doing Bondo body-filler work where needed would eventually result in a master baseplate that would be used for the mold. Now, with the scanner and printer, the OEM base plate is scanned and a virtual Saddlemen baseplate is created with

By using the latest 3D scanning and printing technology in its R&D Department, Saddlemen can bring a seat to market in half the time as it took previously.

software. The new baseplate design is then 3D-printed to confirm its perfect fit on the bike. Once the fit is finalized, the baseplate file is loaded onto the mold maker so that a CNC-machined mold can be created.

A SEAT’S JOURNEY Once a seat design is finalized, there are a lot of steps involved in putting it into production. A Saddlemen seat has to pass through 11 different departments before it makes its way to a dealership – cutting, pre-sewing, sewing assembly, pan assembly, Gel-Core, foam pouring, pre-upholstery, final upholstery, cleaning and final inspection, packing and shipping. Before production ever begins, a serialized label is printed to track the seat’s journey through the process. The label will be used not just to track the seat itself, but also to record which equipment is used for manufacturing, note the employees who built it and even produce an invoice during the shipping process. A seat is inspected and the label is scanned by each of the departments to ensure ongoing quality control.

S TO R Y

A Saddlemen seat visits 11 different departments on its journey to completion, and processes in each department have been fine-tuned for efficiency.

The process of building a seat begins in the cutting department at Saddlemen. Each order is plotted into files, which the CNC cutting tables use to precisely cut the pieces of the seat cover to ensure a perfect fit. One of the new machines is a conveyor-driven CNC cutting machine that increases both production and capacity. It can cut an entire roll of SaddleHyde before the machine must stop to be reloaded. With the cutting department’s two machines, Saddlemen can cut up to 600 yards of material in a day. SaddleHyde is Saddlemen’s popular seat cover material that provides excellent comfort, looks and weather resistance. A leather grain and soft feel give SaddleHyde a luxurious appearance, while the built-in stretch capabilities enhance the overall comfort of the seat. SaddleHyde is extremely durable and low maintenance, standing up to sun, heat, rain and constant use without the need for applying conditioners or any other care beyond a simple cleaning. Once everything is cut, a seat heads to the pre-sewing department, where Saddlemen’s computerized sewing machines complete any required decorative stitching and embroidery. The sewing assembly department is next, where an employee expertly stitches all of the seat panels together. The high-tech sewing machines allow Saddlemen to create detailed designs and styles, but they also give the seat-making process a big boost in efficiency, with as many as a dozen seats receiving decorative stitching at one time.

In the pan assembly department, mounting brackets are installed on the baseplates. In the past, Saddlemen has used fiberglass for the baseplates. While fiberglass is a great foundation, the molds can become worn over time from the constant temperature changes. To prevent that, Saddlemen has started converting from fiberglass baseplates to rigid injection-molded baseplates. That process ensures a perfect fit, time after time, so there is no worry about the fitment changing from continued use. In addition to the fitment consistency, an injection-molded base plate is also incredibly strong and cost efficient. With the baseplate created, the next step is to create a SaddleGel insert that is delivered to the foam department, where one of Saddlemen’s two high-pressure polyurethane co-molding machines precisely pours the foam. The machines combine to provide a capacity of 800 seats per shift.

COMFORT BY DESIGN The co-molding technology enables Saddlemen to create a three-layer comfort platform inside the seat, including comfort foam, SaddleGel and progressive-density ProFoam. The top sculpted layer of comfort foam, which provides shape and soft cushioning for the rider, sits atop the SaddleGel, which absorbs vibration while dispersing pressure and promoting blood flow. ProFoam provides another layer of comfortable support, and a polyurethane substructure forms the foundation of the seat.

COVER STORY

The SaddleGel is at the heart of Saddlemen’s Gel-Core Technology, which is engineered to dampen, divert and deflect energy from the road. Each seat is designed to conform to the rider’s body, reducing pressure points and eliminating the “hot spots” that cause discomfort. When compared to a stock foam seat, a seat with Gel-Core Technology enables a rider to comfortably stay on the road up to 400 percent longer while generating up to 92 percent less road shock and 50 percent less road vibration. Saddlemen’s staff includes chemists, who oversee the proprietary production of SaddleGel at the company’s headquarters. Formally known as a “specially-formulated viscoelastic polymer,” SaddleGel has sufficient elasticity to conform to a rider’s body while still providing support. The foam used for each Saddlemen seat is also carefully designed based on the style of the seat. Saddlemen seats utilize ProFoam, a progressive density foam that provides a finely-tuned balance between support and compliance. The foam is made up of varied cell sizes and types, all held in place by a skin that resists outside elements and seals the foam from water. The foam is not finished until the density and shape have been honed in for an ideal support structure.

Quality control is paramount at Saddlemen. Before a seat or its components leave a department, a quality control check makes sure everything is ready for the next step.

Once these various elements have been created, they all arrive at the pre-upholstery department, where the baseplate is bonded to the foam and joined to the cover. The final upholstery department takes all of the pieces and turns them into a completed seat. From there, it’s time for a cleaning and final inspection. Each Saddlemen product has to receive a perfect quality control inspection before it is sent on to packing and, finally, shipping. While the technology and tools might have changed, Saddlemen’s commitment to quality and comfort remain the same as ever. Now, there are simply more riders who will be able to attest to the big improvement a Saddlemen seat makes to any kind of ride, whether it’s on a V-twin or a metric bike, a bike that stays on the asphalt or one that likes to get dirty. ■

eMans Corporation, parent company of Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties, has taken the next step in its groundbreaking move into the E-bike market. In June it launched a prebooking program for dealers looking to carry the INTENSE powersports-specific, electric pedal-assist mountain bike, the Tazer MX.

LeMans officials also announced a range of related parts, accessories and apparel from such well-known brands as 100%, Alpinestars, ODI, Renthal, and THOR. All of the E-bike offerings – including the Tazer MX – will be featured in a stand-alone catalog available to all Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties dealers in September when the first E-bikes will be ready to ship to dealers.

LeMans Corporation VP of sales Jeff Derge says that ever since the company invited INTENSE to present at the Louisville NVP Product Expo in February, feedback from its large dealer network has been incredibly positive. That interest ramped up considerably when LeMans unveiled its plans to carry the Tazer MX, an industry first for an aftermarket distributor. “We have quite a few dealers who are excited about this opportunity. It gives them another product category in their dealerships,” Derge says. “Our commitment was to bring this category to our dealer network, and not require them to go outside the normal channels of how they do business.” There’s always been one particular barrier to fully entering the E-bike business, and that’s the differences between how the bicycle and powersports industries operate.

Trying to make the bicycle industry model fit within the framework of how the powersports business operates just didn’t make sense, Derge explains. While mostly new to the U.S. powersports market, E-bikes and the whole E-mobility movement has increasingly gained steam in the domestic bicycling scene. Overseas, E-bikes are booming in the European bicycling market, something apparent to anybody who has attended the EICMA show in Milan, Italy over the past few years. Additionally, most of the major powersports OEMs already have E-bike offerings that are widely available in Europe. And on the racing side of things, GNCC even added the eMTB – electric mountain bike – class to the series in 2019. In May alone, when the series restarted after being put on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, the GNCC Race in Georgia saw 62 entries in the E-bike class.

MOTO-INSPIRED ROOTS That’s where INTENSE comes into play. Established in Temecula, California in 1991 by founder and CEO Jeff Steber, the mountain bike company has always had a close relationship with motocross and the off-road riding community. Many of the innovative influences that Steber built into his first mountain-bike frames, such as front and rear suspensions, came from off-road motorcycles. Some of the brand’s first fans and riders include extreme sports athletes Mike Metzger and Shaun Palmer, and motocross and Supercross Champion Jeff Emig. Steber says that in the early days of mountain biking, especially downhill racing, the pro riders who raced in the World Cup looked more like downhill skiers. The whole scene had a more European influence, he notes. “Then Shaun Palmer and INTENSE came onto the racing scene and we were actually wearing motocross gear with motoinspired bikes,” he says. “The product, the apparel and the attitude were very moto-inspired.”

Dealer response to INTENSE’s presentation at the Louisville NVP Product in February was incredible, says LeMans Corporation VP of sales Jeff Derge. INTENSE had a booth where dealers could get a close-up look at the Tazer MX and talk with company executives. Todd Olsen photo

In addition to those crossover moto influences, the company also counts as investors and board members former KTM North America president Jon-Erik Burleson and former KTM North America executive Christy LaCurelle. Additionally, Supercross and motocross champion Ryan Dungey and Geico-Honda team owner Jeff Majkrzak came aboard in 2019 as investors in INTENSE. “INTENSE and Steber’s heritage is a big bonus, along with Jon-Erik being part of the company, especially with all his years in powersports at the OEM level, his understanding of the powersports dealer network, and what the powersports dealers’ expectations are for doing business,” Derge says. “It’s a really good fit because both companies understand the segment. INTENSE is such a unique brand in this space. We couldn’t have asked for a better partner in this.” Dungey, Burleson and Steber all laud LeMans for its proactive decision to enter the E-bike/E-mobility market. Doing so not only gets the company and its dealers entry into the E-bike/electric vehicle revolution, it also helps lower the barrier of entry by offering a program that exists entirely within the powersports ecosystem. “I truly believe that this is very forward thinking for Parts to get a foot in the door with the E-mobility market. Their vast dealer network now has a soft entry into this new exciting market,” Steber says. He adds that this will raise awareness about the electric market, and the E-bike segment is a great way to get started. Burleson agrees, adding, “What we felt by partnering with Parts Unlimited is that we’re casting a wider net. They have the largest dealership network in the world,” he says. “We feel like the upside potential for INTENSE and for E-bikes in general is incredible.”

The INTENSE Tazer MX is the first-ever powersports specific eMTB on the market. Available in two builds, the full-carbon Tazer MX features motocrossinspired componentry from moto-brands like Öhlins, Maxxis, Renthal, Magura and ODI to appeal to the powersports customer. Your customers can get up to 62 miles on a single charge with the easy-to-swap Shimano battery.

THE THREE CLASSES ARE DEFINED AS FOLLOWS • CLASS 1 > E-bikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and have a maximum assisted speed of 20 mph. • CLASS 2 > E-bikes that also have a maximum speed of 20 mph, but are throttle-assisted. • CLASS 3 > E-bikes that are pedal-assist only, with no throttle, and a maximum assisted speed of 28 mph.

HIGH CROSSOVER APPEAL Steber notes that the Tazer MX is particularly well-suited for the powersports market and has a high crossover appeal with off-road riders and other motorcyclists. Not only is the bike outfitted with products from familiar companies – Magura brakes, Maxxis tires, ODI grips, Öhlins suspension, and Renthal handlebars – it can also be upgraded with new graphics as well as replacement parts. It was also designed to allow for easy battery swaps out on the trail. Riders can carry a spare battery in a hydration pack or keep one in the car, allowing for a longer day of riding. “When talking to the powersports dealers at the Louisville NVP – from off-road to Harley-Davidson – they all looked at the product a little differently than the true pedal cyclists. E-bikes probably fit the powersports enthusiast better than the pedal cyclists,” he says. “The true pedal crowd, that guy wants to hide the fact that the bike has a motor on it. They’re not concerned about the suspension and they want something lightweight and streamlined. On the powersports side, they wanted it to look burly and strong, and they want to see the coil shocks, the grips, the saddle, the suspension. The touch points are very crucial. “I think in the end, this product that we worked with Parts to create is very unique and will have a strong appeal for the powersports customers.” Dungey agrees, adding that riding an E-bike is a whole new experience for many riders, and having motocross brand components on the Tazer MX helps give an authentic ride experience for the moto crowd. Another strong feature of the E-bike market, especially with mountain bike models like the Tazer MX, is that it expands

the range of available riding areas beyond what is possible with a dirtbike or dual-sport machine. Having the electric pedal-assist can also let riders push their limits while out on the trails, either by going further or faster, or even riding with the family,” Dungey says. “It fits a very broad range of uses, which is what makes them so fun,” he adds. In fact, it’s those features that Dungey and others believe it could get many non-riders and former riders back on two wheels. “I think this is an all new audience for this space, which is good for everyone,” Dungey says. “People start riding E-bikes and it gets them back on a bike, and then eventually they are feeling fit enough to reignite their passion on dirtbikes. So all the way around its very invigorating.” Given that the Tazer MX is a Class 1 E-bike — a pedal-assist electric bike with a max assisted speed of 20 mph — and most states treat these bikes like traditional mountain or pavement bikes, and they’re usually allowed anywhere a regular bike is permitted. In many cases, customers will be able to access trails close to their homes, rather than loading up a bike to make a trip somewhere. “The Parts relationship will really help broaden our customer base to the powersports enthusiast; this is a completely new sales channel for us. The good thing is that there is a lot of crossover between the mountain biking and powersports crowd, and the INTENSE brand resonates well to both,” Steber says. “We were very excited at this opportunity to work with such a professional organization as LeMans, the leader in powersports aftermarket parts distribution.” ■

ervice items might not be as flashy as new parts and accessories, or the new season’s apparel lineup, but they will always be in high demand. Moose Racing helps dealers and riders alike when it comes to keeping vehicles performing at their best. Repairs, rebuilds, replacements and even simpler service tasks can all begin with a look at Moose Racing’s “garage” offerings. The company has a huge selection of parts, tools and must-have items for service departments. Specific tools like a piston ring installation tool or a radiator fin straightener can be found alongside items like wrenches and screwdrivers. Cleaners keep bikes looking good after a job, while things like the Moose Racing bike mat and oil-absorbent pads make sure the shop stays clean.

Moose Racing offers a specific kit that includes a special drill and self-tapping screws along with instructions for an easy and inexpensive rebuild. Fuel petcock rebuild kit

There are too many rebuild kits and replacement parts to list, but it’s worth sharing details about some of the Moose Racing service products that get used the most in service departments. Complete gasket sets are always good to have on hand for engine rebuilds. Moose Racing packages the sets with all gaskets and oil seals necessary to rebuild the entire engine and transmission. Valve seals and formed rubber valve cover gaskets are included, too. For less extensive projects, Moose also has individual gaskets available. The gasket sets are made in the USA, and are backed by more than 40 years of experience in the powersports market.

Of the piston kits offered by Moose Racing, the 4-stroke piston kit by CP Pistons is the one for riders who want a truly competitive engine. These high-performance pistons feature x-style forgings and fully boxed-style forgings. These designs provide ultimate strength while minimizing friction and boosting durability and power, coming from CP Pistons’s vast knowledge and development of parts in F1, NASCAR and drag racing. Weight reduction is an added bonus. Moose Racing offers this kit as a Pro Race Piston option for select models. Those pistons have increased performance and added durability. Pro kits include a DLC-coated wrist pin to reduce stress from the pin bore area. The Pro Race Pistons feature the fully-boxed style forgings and come standard with a skirt coating to reduce friction and heat build-up. All CP Pistons kits include top-end gasket sets to complete the job and are made in the USA.

2-stroke piston kits

The Moose Racing carb repair kit comes in a single-carb option for bikes or a two-carb option for ATV models with two carburetors. The kit has everything needed for the repair, including O-rings, gaskets, jets, needle, mixture screw, float bowl screws, float valve needle, and seat. The O-rings and rubber gaskets are made from NBR rubber, a material that is proven to have excellent resistance to the ethanol used in modern fuels. All jets are flow-bench tested to maintain OEM specs, ensuring performance is equal to factory specifications.

MOOSE RACING

For customers with 2-stroke rebuilding needs, Moose Racing’s cast piston kits are a great option. The pistons are gravity-cast aluminum alloy with a higher percentage of silicon added into the mix for more stable construction and less distortion of the piston. That combination increases resistance to wear and decreases thermal distortion, which results in a longer piston life and better overall performance.

Moose Racing’s carb repair kit

The coated skirts ease the break-in process, reduce heat build-up and further increase wear resistance. The piston rings are either nitride-plated or chrome-plated depending on the application, and the wrist-pins are nitride-coated. The coatings create a hardened, wearresistant surface. Each cast piston kit includes the piston, rings, wrist pin and circlips. The piston rings are compatible with OEM pistons.

The stainless steel valve exhaust kit converts a head to a long-lasting stainless-steel Black Diamond intake valve. According to Moose Racing, the swap extends the life of the valve train and intake components by as much as four times in comparison to the OEM titanium parts. The forged one-piece stainless steel intake valves, wound chrome-silicon heat-treated wire valve springs, ultralight titanium retainers and hardened steel bases are all packaged in the kit. Moose Racing uses Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software as well as proprietary camshaft analysis and spring design software to precisely design each fitment for these USA-made kits. No engine service is complete without an oil filter change. Moose Racing makes this necessity as a high-quality replacement compared to a standard filter. By using premium paper filter materials, it is able to filter down to 10 microns to keep engines running clean and smooth. In addition to the added protection, this oil filter also boasts a longer life than a standard filter. ■

Racing to Innovate

Sportbike Tires Born on the Track

Michelin’s new Power Experience sportbike tires for the street and track are a culmination of Michelin’s achievements in tire technology. Features are developed through Michelin’s involvement with MotoGP.

M

ichelin has been an innovator in sportbike tire technology for decades. That commitment to one of the largest segments in the U.S. market means that Michelin continues to offer tires that meet or exceed the needs of the sportbike customer, many of whom expect a tire as technologically advanced and performance-oriented as their motorcycles. The new Michelin Power Experience sportbike tires for the street and track are a culmination of Michelin’s achievements in tire technology. Parts Unlimited carries two Michelin Power Experience tires to accommodate a customer’s varying needs – the Power 5 is ideal for the street, and the Power GP can get results on both the street and track. Back in 1946, Michelin filed a patent for the radial tire, but it was solely for automotive use. It was in 1984 when the radial motorcycle tire debuted on Grand Prix bikes. Michelin used the top level of racing as its proving ground, honing the tires and refining them for street use by 1987. Radial technology provided a critical advantage in terms of resistance and stability at high speeds, as well as consistently superior long-term road performance, riding comfort and wear resistance.

More recently, Michelin has continued to push the boundaries of what a sportbike tire can achieve with breakthroughs like Michelin 2CT and 2CT+ Technology and improved silica and carbon black tread compounds. Today Michelin erases the boundaries between the street and track with a range of tires that share the same architecture and profile for plug-and-play performance. Dual-compound tires were first developed by Michelin and continue to evolve, allowing engineers to achieve an optimal balance between performance and longevity. The front tires of the Michelin Power 5 and Power GP both feature Michelin 2CT Technology. This dual-compound style has a more durable rubber in the middle of the tire and the softer rubber on the shoulders for a blend of wear resistance and grip that best suits the front tire profile. On the rear Power 5 and Power GP tires, Michelin 2CT+ Technology provides outstanding grip. Harder rubber in the center of the tread as well as underneath the softer-compound shoulders results in better rigidity at lean, which translates to more stability when cornering, especially under strong acceleration. Meanwhile, the new center compounds offer a new level of straightline longevity.

MICHELIN

The Michelin Power 5 is designed for year-round street riding in wet or dry conditions. The Power 5 sits at the top of Michelin’s sportbike tire offerings for street use.

Just like the radial tire back in 1984, these newer technologies have evolved through Michelin’s involvement with MotoGP. From the critical feedback received in racing, the company is able to develop premium products for both amateur racers and street riders. And because the new Power 5 and Power GP tires share the same construction and profile, riders can easily transition from street to track day riding with minimal changes to the bike’s setup. Aesthetics are another important factor in a customer tire. In addition to a distinctive tread design, Michelin’s new Power 5 and Power GP tires also feature Michelin Premium Touch sidewall design. The unique, micro-textured look of the sidewall rubber is achieved via a laser-etched mold. Combined with the tread design, it gives the tires a unique, modern style. While the Michelin Power 5 and Power GP each have their own distinct characteristics, the tires do share some family traits. In addition to requiring minimal bike setup changes, these tires also offer quick warm-up and a consistent handling feel. The Michelin Power 5 is designed for year-round street riding in wet or dry conditions. From a market standpoint, it is the replacement for the Michelin Power RS tire, but it actually exceeds its predecessor’s grip performance in both the dry and wet. The Power 5 sits at the top of Michelin’s sportbike tire offerings for street use. Other street options include the dual-compound Michelin Power 2CT and the ever-popular single-compound Michelin Pilot Power. Talk to your Parts Unlimited rep about getting a counter mat that shows all of the available sport and sport touring options, with at-a-glance information for each tire. The Michelin Power GP is designed to be the perfect 50/50 track day tire for riders who want the best of both worlds. The low-void ratios of the tread pattern and the Michelin 2CT/2CT+ Technology compounds combine to provide maximum dry traction on track while still providing excellent wet grip on the street. ■

For the 2019-2020 Yamaha YZ250F and YZ250FX there are two new performance intake cams available and a new exhaust cam designed to work with them both. And, for that single-cam Honda CRF450, there are two new grinds available. Those Honda applications cover all the 2017 through 2020 CRF450R, CRF450RX and CRF450RWE models. All this is available now through Parts Unlimited.

As always with Hot Cams all this has been designed and engineered in the USA utilizing state-of-the-art valvetrain software. Everything is dyno-proven, and all the cams have all been engineered to be easy, drop-in installations. They’re all designed for use with the stock valve springs, too. CNC-machined from top-quality 8620 billet steel, they’re case-hardened to assure and maintain an exact fit and lobe profile.

All the new cams in both those Honda and the Yamaha applications are offered with the choice of a Stage 1 or Stage 2 performance grind. Stage 1 is the cam setup designed for riders looking for a strong increase in low-end torque, but with no drop-off at the top end. It’s for riders wanting more low-end power for tight tracks or enduro racing. Stage 2, on the other hand, are the cams designed to really boost the mid- to top-end performance. But here again, there’s no trade-off. All those top-end gains come without

The cams are all newly manufactured from raw steel, too. There’s never a coreexchange required. ■

Italian Style Performance Ducati Clutch Upgrades

hen it comes to clutch upgrades for everything from dirtbikes and ATVs to V-twins and streetbikes, Barnett’s range of clutch kits and products has long been a trusted recommendation. So, when your Ducati-riding customers come calling, let them know that Barnett has them covered, especially those riding the six-speed dry-clutch bikes – the 916, 998, 999 and S2R1000. Barnett has Second Generation dry-clutch kits for these bikes, including heavy-duty replacement spring sets, billet-aluminum pressure plates, and patented clutch baskets. And, with all they offer – smooth action stainless-steel inserts in the baskets, for instance – there’s some serious sportbike performance on-tap here. You’re talking all the tight, no-slip, no-grab, smooth-shifting and easily controlled clutch action that a Ducati rider wants. The Barnett upgrade starts with Kevlar and carbon fiber for the wet-clutch bikes and those Second Generation kits for the dry-clutch models. With those Second Generation dry-clutch kits, Barnett has made some noteworthy changes. To provide smoother engagement and an easy-find neutral the company has substituted a unique damper-spring in place of the OE wave plate. There’s also a single, 0.125-inch thick steel first-plate instead of the usual two thin plates. All together it adds up an even stronger, consistent-performance clutch and the virtual elimination of clutch-drag, a common complaint from Ducati riders. Along with all this, there are heavy-duty springs and super-strong, billet-aluminum baskets and pressure plates. The chrome-silicon springs are shot-peened, heattreated and powder-coated gloss black for a clean, long lasting finish. Barnett’s billet-aluminum baskets feature patented stainless-steel inserts that ensure smooth, consistent clutch engagement and long-life durability. The CNC-machined billet aluminum pressure plates, designed to help protect the clutch, come with the bearing and clutch-control pin pre-installed. Not only do these upgrades perform, they also look great. The heavy-duty springs are supplied with stainless steel screws and billet-aluminum spring cups with the choice of a red, black, gold, or clear anodized finish. The pressure plates and baskets are offered with red, black or gold anodized finishes. ■

Barnett’s range of clutch products for Ducati motorcycles are not only an upgrade over the OE parts, they also offer a serious style boost for your store’s Ducatisti.

Premium Tires for Sportbikes

W

hen it comes to high-performance riding, Dunlop makes sure that sportbike riders get all of the traction and stability they need to carve canyons or pare down their lap times. The Dunlop Sportmax Q3+® is a premium sport performance tire at home on both the street and track, while the Sportmax Q4® is a purpose-built track day tire that is still street legal. Dunlop has incorporated a number of key technology features into both the Q3+ and the Q4. Jointless Tread (JLT) technology uses a continuously-wound strip compound, which allows Dunlop to optimize the placement of the compound in specific areas of the tire to achieve ideal stability, flex and grip. JLT also helps to create a larger, more consistent footprint during braking, cornering and acceleration. Carbon Fiber Technology (CFT) bolsters the sidewalls to give better cornering performance, precise steering, braking stability and feel. In all, CFT delivers a big confidence boost to the rider. Steering is further enhanced by Dunlop’s proprietary Intuitive Response Profile (IRP). This unique profile design features a taller profile while the sides taper in more aggressively. The result is outstanding turn-in response and feel, as well as a larger contact patch when cornering. Both the Q3+ and the Q4 are manufactured at Dunlop’s plant in Buffalo, New York. Development has spanned the continent, from Dunlop’s Huntsville Proving Grounds to race tracks like Virginia International Raceway. The Sportmax Q3+ is the tire choice for canyon carvers, though it is right at home on a race track, too. When Dunlop began developing the Q3+, the company’s goal was to create a tire with more longevity than the Q3. They achieved that goal while also upping the performance capabilities. The Sportmax Q3+ is the tire choice for canyon carvers, though it is right at home on a race track, too. It’s designed to excel in both wet and dry conditions.

Dunlop’s Sportmax Q4 is a streetlegal tire with a track-day focus. The Q4 tires were designed to run at street pressures and don’t require tire warmers.

As a street tire, the Q3+ is designed to excel in both wet and dry conditions. The aggressive tread pattern uses minimal tread grooves that have a long length to provide solid wet-weather performance. Overall, the tire offers a predictable, compliant ride and superb grip. The rear Q3+ tire features Dunlop’s MT Multi-Tread™ technology. The center of the tire has a silica-infused compound for an increased tread life, and special lateralgrip compounds on the shoulders provide outstanding grip while cornering. The track day focus of the Sportmax Q4 means that it is Dunlop’s premium choice for riders who want to lower their lap times. High-performance but still DOT-approved, the Q4 can achieve angles of up to 62 degrees*, more than any other street-legal tire that Dunlop has made. The rear tire compound includes carbon black for maximum grip. Dunlop knows that track day riders don’t want to make drastic changes to convert their bike from street to track mode, so the Q4 tires were designed to run at street pressures so there is no need to adjust the bike’s chassis or electronics. The Q4 tires don’t require tire warmers, either, making them even more user-friendly. ■

JOINTLESS TREAD TECHNOLOGY JLT helps increase tire stability and reduce flex, and helps create a larger more consistent footprint during braking, cornering and acceleration. Another benefit of JLT construction: The rear tire is up to one pound lighter than the same size Q3+, so there’s less mass for increased acceleration. The Q4 is a DOT-approved tire.

Power Delivery Maintain That Chain

A

ny downtime is an excellent opportunity for your customers to get out to the garage and check essential parts and perform routine maintenance they may have been too busy to do in their daily lives. One of the most essential parts of a motorcycle to keep maintained is the drive chain. While not a glamorous item, chains are an integral part of a motorcycle and should be on every rider’s list of parts to watch and maintain. Your customers should routinely inspect their chain for all of the following issues – from less severe concerns like dirt, debris and rust, to more critical problems like pin rotation, missing or damaged seals, and visible cracks. While minor warning signs can be addressed with proper cleaning and lubrication, the more severe and critical issues can cause a dangerous situation if the rider continues to use the chain. Severe issues will require an immediate replacement of the chain. When a chain replacement is required, RK’s MAX series chains are an affordable performance solution. There are three versions of the MAX chain – MAX O, MAX X and MAX Z. MAX O MAX O features traditional round O-ring seals, and is RK’s premium quality O-Ring chain that is available at an economical price. The MAX O chain is offered in a wide range of applications for both street and off-road use. MAX O is available in 520, 525 and 530 sizes, and in either a Natural or Gold finish.

MAX X MAX X features RX-Ring Seals and is a competitively priced sealed RX-Ring chain. RK’s RX-Ring seals provide double barrier protection from dirt, debris and high speed heat stresses. The Max X is available in a wide range of applications for mid- to large-displacement machines, including up to 160 links for motorcycles with extended swingarms. The MAX X can be used for both street and off-road use, and comes available in 520, 525 and 530 pitches. It is available in a wide range of colors including – Natural, Gold, Chrome, Black/Gold, Black/Chrome, Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Orange and Pink. MAX Z The MAX Z chain features RX-Ring Seals and was created especially for extreme, large-displacement sport machines, including the most powerful streetbikes on the market today. The MAX Z offers extreme levels of strength at exceptionally competitive prices. RK’s RX-Ring seals provide double barrier protection from dirt, debris and high-speed heat stresses. MAX Z is also available in longer chain lengths of up to 160 links for motorcycles with extended swingarms. Pitches available are 520, 525 and 530, and your customers can choose from the following finishes – Natural, Chrome, Gold, Black/Gold, Black/Chrome, Red or Blue. ■

CHAIN WARNING SIGNS SEVERE Cracks WARNING: Failure to address the warning signs shown on this page can result in reduced chain life and/or can cause a very dangerous situation. RK recommends that you inspect your chain prior to each ride and follow proper chain maintenance procedures to get the longest life out of your chain. MAINTENANCE: All Chains require maintenance and lubrication. For off-road use, clean and lube the chain after every ride. For street chains, clean and lube the chain every 200 miles or 300 km for nonsealed chains and 300 miles or 500 km for sealed chains. Clean the chain with a mineral oil based cleaner and a soft cloth to remove excess dirt and grit. Do not use any cleaner that contains acid, caustic chemicals or brake cleaner to maintain your chain. Do not use coarse brushes to clean your chain as they could damage the rubber seals. Avoid steam cleaning and high pressure water on both sealed and non-sealed chains. These actions can contaminate the internal lubricant which can cause premature chain wear. LUBRICATION: Keeping your chain clean and generously lubricated with a quality motorcycle specific chain lube will ensure the long life and performance of the chain. If the chain has seals, be sure to use an O-Ring safe chain lubricant. If you have any questions please visit our website for FAQ and contact information. Being the Best is a Commitment web: RKExcelAmerica.com web: global.rk-japan.co.jp

Cracks can be caused by age or too much load. If you see any cracks, stop riding immediately and replace the chain. Continuing to ride on a chain with cracks can be very dangerous!

URGENT CRITICAL Missing or Damaged Seals

Using improper cleaning chemicals and/or use of improper cleaning tools can result in the installed seals being damaged. Chain wear life will be reduced, stop riding and replace the chain immediately.

CRITICAL Pin Rotation

RK’s quad-staked pins should look square when looking at the chain. Rotated pins are a sign of worn pins and bushings. If some pins have rotated with points facing up, replace the chain immediately.

SERIOUS Wear Marks

When the side plates on the top and bottom show worn flat spots, replace the chain as soon as possible. Flat spots indicate the wearing away of metal and chain strength has been reduced.

CAUTION Kinks

As chains age they can become stiff and kinked. This can occur from not properly maintaining the chain. Kinks will prevent the chain from moving normally. Replace the chain as soon as possible.

ALERT

Chain Flotation

If the chain can be pulled away from the rear sprocket, it is a sign of elongation. Elongation occurs as chains age and the internal pins wear. The chain should be replaced soon.

ATTENTION

Rust

Chains that show signs of rust indicate improper maintenance and/or neglect. Rust will prevent normal chain movement and will reduce the life of the chain. Clean and lube your chain immediately.

NOTICE Dirt and Debris

Chains that are allowed to accumulate excess amounts of dirt and debris will have a reduced wearlife. Follow proper chain cleaning procedures. Clean and lube the chain every 300 miles or 500 km. Don’t allow dirt to build up.

Crack open that Parts Unlimited 2020 ATV/UTV catalog and check out the exhaust options that Trinity has for the X3. The company’s slip-on muffler is a great upgrade over the stock setup, which is hidden and extremely quiet. In order to increase the appearance and exhaust tone, Trinity Racing’s dual muffler system easily installs and is ready to run in no time.

Trinity Racing’s full system for the Can-Am Maverick X3 provides a big boost in performance and style.

With the Trinity Racing test pipe, your customers can enjoy the performance of a full exhaust system while running the stock muffler. A fuel tuner is essential for getting the optimum performance out of a side-by-side that’s received an exhaust upgrade.

T

he big debate between side-by-side owners is whether the Can-Am Maverick X3 or the Polaris RZR Turbo is the better car. Trinity Racing takes a neutral approach to this argument as the company knows that there are redeeming qualities in either company’s side-by-sides. For those on Team Can-Am, Trinity Racing offers a range of performance upgrades for making what is arguably

If your customers want an even bigger boost in performance and styling, Trinity Racing offers a full system that includes the slip-on mufflers and a stainless steel header pipe. The header frees up exhaust flow by eliminating the catalytic converter, further increasing performance and reducing engine heat. Another option is the new Trinity Racing test pipe. This is a stainless steel header pipe that bolts up to the stock muffler. This provides the performance of a full system, with the sound and look of the stock exhaust for those who prefer that sleeper look and a quieter exhaust tone. Next up for increasing performance is the addition of a fuel tuner. When replacing an exhaust, Trinity Racing says it is imperative to also tune the vehicle for the exhaust, which requires added fuel. Without tuning, the engine will run too lean and not deliver the added benefit of adding an upgraded exhaust. Trinity Racing offers an easy plug-and-play tuning solution for the Maverick X3 that increases the fuel into the engine, increasing horsepower and decreasing the engine temperature. Once the engine is running to its highest potential, it is time to increase the performance of the clutch. Trinity Racing offers a variety of clutch kits that modify how the vehicle’s clutch engages and disengages. The company offers kits for stock sized tires and for oversized tires, as well as for different elevations – from 0 feet to 3,000 feet, and from 3,000 feet to 6,000 feet. The clutch kits include different weights, springs, helix and a drive belt. For your DIY customers, Trinity Racing claims that installation is extremely straightforward and includes detailed instructions. Installing a clutch kit will improve belt life as well as increase performance. No matter where your customers fall on the Can-Am vs. Polaris divide, all of them can benefit from the performance upgrades offered by Trinity Racing. ■

Think Thin

Big Bass From a Small Sub To make the CompRT subwoofer as small as possible, KICKER engineered a special motor, and the patented SoloKon conesupport system with back bracing. Other engineering highlights of the CompRT include a largediameter progressive-roll spider for better overall sound, a bumped top plate for ultimate excursion and the most bass, and a tough Santoprene speaker surround for outstanding rigidity.

KICKER Audio’s CompRT subwoofers are designed to deliver serious bottom-end sound where space is limited.

S

ome people might argue that there’s no wrong way to listen to music, but the team at KICKER disagrees. Music should be appreciated, and that means hearing every bit of it, right down to the bass. We all know that most stock stereo systems have limited bass capabilities, no matter how much fine-tuning. A lot of people think they are fine with that until they hear the difference that a quality audio setup can make, with no parts of the music getting lost in the mix. And with KICKER’s CompRT subwoofer, the bass can be both heard and felt. Good bass completes an audio system, but with a powersports vehicle, it can be challenging to find the right spot for mounting subwoofers. That’s why KICKER designed the CompRT subwoofer to be ultra-thin, making it ideal for smaller vehicles where space is at a premium.

The dual voice coils are designed to handle high heat, with the wire wrapped around a solid pole piece that has double venting for efficient cooling. The spring-loaded wire terminals are oversized to allow for heavy-gauge speaker wire, which ensures maximum power transfer when using big amps. Since the CompRT is capable of handling up to 400 watts of power, the subwoofer is strong enough to be heard over the noise of traffic, the engine or the trail. On top of all the premium parts that make up the CompRT, KICKER’s signature red cone stitching adds a touch of style to the subwoofer. ■

Sophisticated Style

High-Tech, High-Quality, Never Boring

The Contra2 features that old-school Icon style, but features modern technology and materials. The leather jacket is available in perforated and non-perforated styles.

C

lassic, but not clichéd, Icon’s Contra2 collection is for riders who want modern technology and materials without giving up timeless style. Premium leather and textile materials, D3O impact protectors and fine-tuned details make the Contra2 jacket, pants and gloves a collection that oozes old-school Icon style. The Contra2 leather jacket comes in two options, depending on how much airflow a rider wants. There are black and black/white options that are perforated in precise areas to allow maximum intake and exhaust airflow, and there are non-perforated options in black and hi-viz, which are more suited to riding in chillier climates. For both perforated and non-perforated styles, the Contra2 jacket has more temperature control features, including front and back zippered vents, cuff vents and a removable, insulated liner. The leather and textile components of the Contra2 jacket are shaped into Icon’s Sport Fit, which means the fit is loose, but not baggy, and the arms are slightly pre-curved for a comfortable feeling even in an aggressive riding position. Anti-flap arm straps and a ratchet waist closure help tailor the fit, too. The Contra2 jacket gets the finishing touch from D3O impact protectors in the shoulders, elbows and back. The unique technology behind D3O provides enhanced resistance during asphalt encounters, but the material is thin, lightweight and flexible so it is both comfortable and unobtrusive. Icon designed the Contra2 leather pants to be a highperformance overpant, with inseam zippers that make it easy to get them off and on while wearing regular pants. high-viscosity index provides stable viscosity over a wide temperature range. EXP helps protect engines in a number of ways – it has a high film strength that improves component protection, it improves oxidation resistance, and it prolongs wet clutch life.

Each of the three 4-stroke oils is specially formulated to be a premium option in its category, which Bel-Ray simply defines as “good, better and best,” with the EXS synthetic oil at the upper end. Each of the three styles is designed to deliver the best balance of the oil’s main responsibilities, with proper additives and base-stock selections carefully chosen to ensure quality.

EXS Full Synthetic Ester 4T oil uses fine-quality synthetic hydrocarbon and ester base fluids combined with unique extreme pressure, anti-wear additives, and shear-resistant VI improvers to meet the demands of high-performance applications. A solid performance oil, EXS lowers engine temperatures and increases horsepower. The superior film strength increases component protection, while the highest-possible viscosity index improves viscosity protection in high temperatures.

ot all motorcycles are the same, and that’s true for engine oil, as well. Bel-Ray has oil options for most riding situations, bike styles and budgets. In the metric and sportbike categories, Bel-Ray’s offerings include EXL mineral oil, EXP semi-synthetic oil, and the fully-synthetic EXS.

EXL, EXP and EXS oils all meet the performance requirements of API SN and JASO MA2, and they are suitable for air-cooled and liquid-cooled engines as well as wet clutches. The EXL Mineral 4T oil is the entry-level oil from Bel-Ray, but that doesn’t mean it is lacking in quality. Riders can use this oil with the assurance that it exceeds OEM specifications and will help enhance the life and performance of the engine. Bel-Ray’s EXP Synthetic Ester Blend 4T oil is a blend of high-quality synthetic oils with select mineral base oils. The combination ensures a high level of protection for all 4-stroke motorcycles. EXP contains shear-resistant VI improvers to resist viscosity breakdown, and the

High-Performance Rotors and Pads

BC Brakes continues to add to its lineup of highperformance braking solutions for sportbikes. Most recently, the company has added new model fitments for its X Series and XC Series fullyfloating front rotors. The rotors pair well with EBC’s brake pad options for every type of sportbike riding, from street to track days to racing. The X and XC Series rotors share a lot of similarities, with the big difference being their shape. The X Series rotors have a circular shape throughout the body of the rotor, while the XC rotors feature a contoured outer edge to save weight and enhance braking performance. The rotors are exceptionally lightweight, one of the traits that has made them such a popular choice among sportbike riders. The design does a lot more than shave some weight, of course. They also help eliminate vibration problems, ensure predictable braking characteristics even when under stress, and last longer than conventional rotors. Rotor construction begins with mill-hardened stainless steel, which produces high-friction rotor blades that create maximum brake effect. Because both the X and XC Series rotors are direct size replacements for the OEM rotors, they are an easy upgrade to make. EBC’s motorcycle rotors use the company’s patented S-Drive button system, which features square-sided rivets captured in square drive pockets on the rotor and hub. That setup allows the outer rotor blade to expand and contract freely under the heat of braking without suffering rivet lock. By designing each rotor with only six drive buttons, EBC is able to save additional weight compared to stock rotors. New model fitments for the X Series rotors include popular models like the BMW S1000RR, Honda CBR600 RR, Kawasaki ZX-10R, Suzuki GSX-R1000 and the Yamaha YZF models. EBC also builds X Series rotors that are compatible with the Tokico and Brembo calipers on

Honda Fireblades. There is now an XC Series fitment for the latest Kawasaki ZX-6R. Sportbike riders can further enhance their braking performance on the street with EBC Brakes HH pads. These sintered metal pads provide maximum brake effect and last twice as long as organic pads, offering the best of both worlds. Riders who want to take performance up a notch can opt for the EPFA extreme performance pads. Featuring the latest in sintered-metal fusion technology, the blend of metals enhances friction performance throughout the life of the pad. With great heat cycle capability and a fast bed-in, the EPFA pads are ideal for track day riders. EBC GPFAX pads are focused solely on track performance. These sintered road-racing pads are designed to perform at their best when combined with slick tires and highperformance brake calipers. Improved heat cycling enables the pads to be raced, allowed to cool and then re-used without a loss in brake performance. The updated materials wear better than ever and cause less rotor wear. Racers can count on fade-free stopping power with the GPFAX brake pads. ■

ridgestone’s portfolio of motorcycle tires is vast and impressive, with applications for virtually every kind of motorcycle. However, as motorcycles keep improving, so must the tires. For 2020, Bridgestone has five new tires to not only meet the demands of today’s motorcycles, but also to give classic bikes the advantage of modern rubber. Bridgestone’s bias-ply Battlax BT46 offers modern performance for vintage sport and touring motorcycles.

TIRES FOR CLASSIC MACHINES

The successor to the popular Battlax BT45, the Bridgestone Battlax BT46 is a bias-ply tire for vintage sport and touring motorcycles. Available in eight front sizes and 17 rear sizes currently, 21 more applications will be released throughout 2020 and 2021. Silica-rich construction gives the Battlax BT46 superior wet performance over the BT45 without sacrificing dry performance. Aesthetically, the BT46’s tread pattern maintains the vintage sport and touring look that riders want, but has been updated to deliver performance improvements.

DON’T FORGET SCOOTERS!

For sub 400cc scooters, the Bridgestone Battlax SC delivers sporty handling and stability. Wide grooves efficiently displace water, making for a great tire in wet or dry conditions. Tread rigidity has been optimized to reduce irregular wear and the shimmying effect it causes. With the Bridgestone Battlax Scooter SC2, your customers are getting a sportbike tire for their maxi-scooters. There’s precise handling thanks to MonoSpiral Belt construction, and the 3LC dual compound rear places a high-mileage compound in the center and soft compounds on the shoulders for excellent cornering grip. The SC2 even features the same tread pattern as Bridgestone’s popular Battlax Hypersport S21, and combined with the increased block rigidity the SC2 has excellent dry cornering grip. Silica Rich compounds enhance grip in all conditions.

Your maxiscooter-riding customers can enjoy sportbikelevel performance thanks to Bridgestone’s Battlax Scooter SC2 tires.

For the touring-oriented maxi-scooterist, there’s the Battlax Scooter SC2 Rain. In many ways the SC2 Rain is similar to the standard SC2 – both feature MonoSpiral Belt construction and both feature 3LC dual compound construction in the rear. The SC2 Rain, however, gets an increased groove ratio designed to improve water drainage, while the optimized groove angle improves deformation and roll characteristics. Basically, riders get a confidence-inspiring sport touring tire, especially in wet conditions.

BRIDGESTONE DOES HARD ENDURO Hard Enduro is as extreme as it gets – that’s where the Battlecross E50 Extreme rear tire thrives. Bridgestone’s stickiest and gummiest enduro tire, it’s based on the standard E50 but in an extra soft compound for maximum grip. Available only in a 140/80-18 rear tire size, the E50 Extreme’s widely spaced center tread blocks reduce the chance of mud getting trapped, while convex Castle Block technology on both the center and side lugs provide an added biting surface for traction. The E50 Extreme also utilizes Bunker technology as additional bite points for maximum grip even when the tire is buried in soft terrain. ■

Choice of Champions Sub-6-Second Performance

F

or more than 70 years, JE Pistons has crafted high-quality replacement and performance pistons for the powersports industry. From flat track to roadracing to motocross, JE Pistons plays a key role of turning fuel into forward momentum. And, no form of powersports does that faster than drag racing, where JE Pistons regularly propel machines to more than 200 mph in less than 7 seconds. The same pistons and piston services offered to professional teams are also an option for your customers, with off-the-shelf parts available for the Kawasaki ZX-14R, Suzuki GSX-R1300 Hayabusa, GSX-R1000, and GS1100. Need proof of JE’s performance and reliability? Just take a look at the NHDPRO results sheets. Two years ago, Stotz Racing dominated the Pro Street class with its turbocharged CBR1000RR using JE pistons. Rider Frank Stotz didn’t just win the championship, he set a new ¼-mile record with a blistering 6.601-second run, making the team’s CBR the world’s fastest Pro Street bike by nine thousandths of a second. Things didn’t start out well for the Stotz team, however. The Honda’s 450-plus horsepower turbo CBR had major teething problems in the months leading up to the team’s championship season. Throughout it all, the JE pistons endured. Once Stotz Racing was able to dial in its engine, Frank was able to focus on riding. The result was unmatched speed and consistency that netted them the win. Surviving the punishing environment of forced induction is one thing, but what about nitrous? That’s what Brad Mummert uses on his 600-horsepower 1981 Suzuki GS 1100, which Richard Gadson (nephew to famed multitime national champion drag racer Rickey Gadson) rocketed to victory in the XDA Pro Stock class in 2019. You read that right – a 40-year-old naked sportbike won the class, with a record-setting best run of 6.403 seconds at 221 mph. Let that sink in for a moment. Of course the GS is heavily modified. It’s pushing 1,655 cc by way of a stroked billet crank and custom forged JE pistons, which were key in making this monster reliable. Prior to the 2019 season, one of Mummert’s biggest issues was piston life. That’s when Mummert switched to JE products. The fact is, JE products are built to thrive in harsh environments, which is why some of the fastest teams in America rely on them. Your customers can rely on them too thanks to off-the-shelf pistons for popular street bikes. ■

ot only do the latest UTV and ATV covers from Moose Utility Division provide a tough barrier from the elements, but they are also packaged to encourage easy sales for dealers.

There are six new covers in all, including two sizes each for ATV and UTV covers and a cover built specifically to shelter an ATV while it’s being towed. Each cover comes packaged in a four-color box that shows customers exactly what’s inside. There are clear photos of each cover on a vehicle as well as a list of features so customers can see all of the benefits at a glance. Moose Utility Division designed the packaging this way with dealers in mind, using the eye-catching design as a way to make sales easier and displays more attractive. Moose Utility Division chose UltraMax fabric for the covers. UltraMax is a durable polyester material, and its innovative construction results in a fabric that is extremely capable of resisting the elements. UltraMax holds up so it can protect the vehicle underneath for a long time while continuing to look good doing it. As a bonus, UltraMax is also very easy to clean. In addition to providing an extremely high level of UV protection, these ATV and UTV covers are also built to

withstand some rain and snow thanks to a water-resistant coating. Dust and dirt stay outside, too, so vehicles underneath stay pristine. An elastic hem along the bottom edge of the cover ensures that it fits snugly and securely to the vehicle. Each cover comes packed inside a multi-use carrying bag for compact storage when it’s time to ride. Moose Utility Division designed the UTV covers in a two-seater size and a four-seater size. A large zipper on the driver’s side offers easy access to the cab even when the vehicle is covered. To prevent moisture buildup inside the cover, an integrated Perma-vent system minimizes condensation and allows constant airflow. The two ATV cover styles include ATV Dura and ATV Trailerable covers. Both are available in an X-large or an XX-large size. The ATV Trailerable cover includes two heavy-duty quick-adjust straps that run under the vehicle to ensure that the cover stays in place even while the vehicle is being transported. Side-release buckles make it easy to secure them in place. There are also four tie-down locations to add an extra level of security. ■

Indian Upgrades

Adding Flare to the Challenger

T

he Indian Challenger brings 120-plus horsepower and a whole new clientele to the growing performance Bagger market. Offering a trio of upgrades for this newest Indian, Klock Werks adds fitments for its popular Flare™ windshield, more comfort and control, and better audio sound quality. The first upgrade here is for air management and the experts at Klock Werks have outfitted the Challenger with its patented Flare windshield. Designed on the World’s Fastest Bagger built in 2006, the Flare’s downforce-providing technology and design creates a clean pocket of air for the rider, while also helping enhance the sound of the bike’s audio system. The hips on the outer edges of the windshield help break the airflow to kick it around the rider and passenger. The flip at the top of the screen directs airflow up, over and around the riders. Made from double-sided, hard-coated polycarbonate it’s designed for durability.

Klock Werks has added fitments for its popular Flare windshield for Indian Motorcycle’s new performance Bagger, the Challenger.

Klock Werks’ popular Klip Hanger handlebars provide the Challenger with additional levels of comfort and control. A multi-adjustable design, the Klip Hanger bars offer a 5-inch range of motion just on width alone. The unique knuckle design allows the controls and grip to be adjusted to the riders preferred wrist angle, eliminating the concern of getting the right fit and feel of finding a specific handlebar to their exact liking. The mechanical design and combination of special DOM tubing with billet aluminum knuckles also adds a style cue to any Challenger. Lastly, Indian owners, Challenger riders included, often contend with fairing vibrations that distort the audio quality of their bike’s sound system. Klock Werks’ Dynamat sound control fairing kit is one popular solution. The high-efficiency sound-dampening material attaches to the interior of the fairing to dramatically reduce those vibrations This gives the rider a louder, clearer bass response and more pronounced mid-range tone for an improvement in sound quality overall. Computer-generated sheets of Dynamat Xtreme and Dynaliner are custom cut so there’s no guesswork as to how much is needed or where it should be placed. Since 2015 Klock Werks has been outfitting all Indian models with everything from handlebars and fenders to seat kits, device mounts, and more. ■

Pads and Rotors Developed in Tandem

SBS develops its rotors and brake pads in tandem so that when pairing a rotor with its corresponding pad, your customers will get a precise, upgraded brake setup.

S

BS Brakes makes rotors and pads for virtually every type of riding, whether it’s on-road or off-road, on two wheels or four. The company develops its rotors and brake pads in tandem so that they complement each other, so pairing a rotor with its corresponding pads provides an outstanding braking setup. Of the many SBS brake pads available, the off-road options are some of the most popular. The pad compound is designed to handle the aggressive environment that off-road bikes, ATVs and UTVs encounter, including sand, dust, mud and water. Racers will want the power of the RSI pads, while the SI or CS pads are ideal for more relaxed off-road riding. Many SBS brake pads utilize the mechanical bonding technology known as NRS (Nucap Retention System). The system mechanically attaches the friction material of the pad to the galvanized steel backing plate, and the result is a longer-lasting brake pad, reduced rust and corrosion, no more delamination and less noise. SBS has utilized NRS technology since 2001.

BRAKE PADS & ROTORS

Dual Development

SBS Brakes offers three categories for its rotors. SBS Standard brake rotors include round or a similar standard shape in fixed and floating options, and they are ideal for OEM replacement. These are a great addition for riders who want to keep the original visual appearance of the OE discs. For customers looking to step things up a notch, SBS Upgrade rotors are a premium style, such as floating or contoured. The range offers improved performance and a nice style upgrade, and are designed to stay neat and tidy. The SBS Oversize rotors are specially developed for off-road front brakes to provide more stopping power and better braking. Dealers can use the SBS Parts Finder widget on the company’s website to easily match a model to the components. SBS has manufactured braking products since 1965 and now offers a wide range of options for different vehicles and riding styles. ■

Piston Pedigree

Forged Pistons with a Long History

Wössner sponsors Supercross and motocross riders around the globe. The range includes both privateers as well as factory riders.

Wössner produces 4-stroke piston and 2-stroke piston applications for off-road bikes, ATVs and UTVs, with plenty of fitments for older models as well as the current ones. Each comes with everything required for installation.

E

ckart Wössner was a motorcycle racer in the 1970s when he recognized that there was a need for high-quality pistons in his home country of Germany. He began importing them under the brand name Wössner before deciding to stop importing and begin manufacturing. Since 1994, Wössner has engineered and produced its high-performance off-road forged pistons and other engine components in-house. For the past two years, Wössner operated out of a new world headquarters in Weil am Rhein, which is large enough to support all of the R&D as well as manufacturing. By keeping every step of the process under its direction, Wössner is able to maintain extremely high quality and consistency.

Eckart Wössner is still at the helm, with his wife Helga and his son Tobias working alongside him. Today, more than 40 years after the company’s founding, Wössner has truly become a global brand. In addition to the headquarters in Germany, there are also Wössner divisions in North America, Asia, Italy and the UK to provide focused support in those powersports markets. And, if you’re curious about the pronunciation of the company name given the umlaut over the “o,” it’s simply pronounced “W-ah-sner” here in North America, so there’s no need to consult a German language guide. Parts Unlimited carried Wössner forged 2-stroke pistons for a number of years, but now 4-stroke pistons are available, as well. Each forged piston kit comes complete with all of the parts required for installation, including the piston, ring, wrist pin and pin locks. Wössner pistons are designed to offer a performance advantage. The lightweight pistons are precisely measured and manufactured to provide the tightest piston-wall clearance possible, which results in an engine that runs quieter. Strength and durability are also built into the design, with features like double-bridged forging on the 4-stroke pistons. There are standard and oversize pistons available for most models, and the 4-stroke applications are available with high compression ratios. Pack Up, Head Out! Rugged Adventure Luggage

Givi’s Outback series of top cases and side cases are built with aluminumalloy sheeting for maximum durability and style, and they’re available in a brushed finish or a black matte coating.

dventure bikes are best sellers in today’s market, and for good reason. Your customers ride them because they’re rugged, comfortable, and versatile. What better way to make an already capable Adventure even better than with some wellengineered luggage? And, for that your customers should check out Givi’s product line, which features a lineup of tough cargo products for the BMW GS series, Honda Africa Twin, KTM Adventure bikes, Suzuki V-Strom, Triumph Tiger, and Yamaha Tenere. Givi’s Trekker Outback series is a perfect visual and functional match for your customer’s big-wheeled machine. These cases are made from aluminum-alloy sheeting for maximum durability and style, and they’re available in a brushed finish or a black matte coating. The top-loading Outback top cases are offered in two sizes. The 42 liter option will hold a full-face helmet while the 58-liter box is big enough to house two full-face helmets. Outback side cases feature the same robust, riveted construction as the top boxes and are available in matching colors in either a slim 37-liter size or a larger 48-liter capacity. These side cases use Givi’s Cam series mounting hardware for an extremely secure attachment to the racks, and feature lids that pivot up or can pop off entirely for easy loading and unloading. Side cases can be ordered as a pair or individually, and many riders will opt to put the smaller 37-liter case on the exhaust side while mounting the larger 48-liter case

on the other side. When ordered as a set in the same size, cases will come keyed alike for added convenience. Available accessories for the Outback luggage lineup include a passenger back rest for the top box, inner waterproof bags, inner elastic nets to keep items secure, and tie-down straps for lashing additional items to the lids. Givi’s Trekker lineup is also a good fit for Adventure-style machines requiring lighter-duty luggage options. Offered in 33-liter, 46-liter, and 52-liter cases that can be used as either side or top cases, the Trekkers are made from polypropylene reinforced with aluminum panels. Color options include brushed aluminum or a black finish. Finally, there are Givi’s universal Gravel-T GRT709 saddlebags, which are terrific option for true off-road action. Made from rubberized fabric that’s 100 percent waterproof, these bags offer 35 liters of storage each and come with mounting plates that can be adapted to all Givi side case frames and almost any other OEM or aftermarket pannier racks. The Gravel-T bags are also available at a lower MSRP than the hard cases, making them an affordable alternative. A Track-Worthy Premium Chain

motorcycle can have a powerful motor and a competition-level rear tire, but transferring power from one to the other is only as good as the chain that connects them. Whether it’s for racing or just a quick ride through town, Sunstar gives street riders confidence with the RTG1 Works TripleGuard sealed chain.

Sunstar’s RTG1 Works TripleGuard sealed chain features a lightweight design that’s also strong enough for everything from road-racing bikes to off-road machines.

The RTG1 is Sunstar’s premium-level roadracing chain, but the properties that make it premium also make it very versatile for a range of riding styles and models. The chain features an extremely strong, yet lightweight design that can benefit any and all street motorcycles, right up to high-performance sportbikes and race bikes. While the 520 size is a popular option for racers and performance-minded riders, the RTG1 is also available in 525 and 530 sizes. The 525 chain is a popular choice for off-road enduro racing, making it a chain that can withstand the rigors of both the road and trail.

One of the traits that makes the Sunstar RTG1 chain a premium option is the TripleGuard sealed ring technology, or TG for short. The ring seals are designed with three lips per side, which provides outstanding protection against extremely high heat buildup while maintaining maximum lubrication. The chain is constructed from 100 percent heat-treated components, and the inner and outer plates are both gold, which adds an extra bit of style. A rivet-type connecting link is the finishing touch. ■

K

eeping a motorcycle pristine and ready to ride is a lot easier with a durable cover. Nelson-Rigg introduced the Defender Extreme cover series to keep powersports vehicles safely tucked away, and the Defender Extreme sportbike cover is a nearly universal fit for 300-1400cc sportbikes. Like all of the other Defender Extreme covers, the sportbike cover is made from Nelson-Rigg’s proprietary UltraMax® fabric, which offers an extremely high level of UV protection. Nelson-Rigg is so confident in the fabric’s capabilities that each cover comes with a lifetime warranty that includes fading. The UltraMax fabric is combined with electronically heattaped seams to make the Defender Extreme cover 100 percent waterproof, whether it’s raining or snowing. Inside the cover, a soft liner protects the windscreen and other vulnerable spots. Nelson-Rigg also designed the Defender Extreme cover with a Perma-Venting system that prevents moisture buildup under the cover and helps reduce heat buildup on sunny days.

After a ride, there is no need to wait for a bike to cool before putting on the cover. Strategically-placed heat-resistant panels are placed inside the cover to accommodate sportbikes with a high or low exhaust system.

Nelson-Rigg’s Defender Extreme cover series are 100 percent waterproof and feature a soft liner to protect against scratches on windshields and other vulnerable parts.

The Defender Extreme sportbike cover stays in place with a snug full-elastic hem, security grommets for an optional cable lock and a quick-release strap that passes under the lower fairing. Highly-reflective stripes on the sides and back of the cover make sure the bike stays visible. Each Defender Extreme cover arrives in a compression bag for easy, compact storage. ■

Easy Upgrade, Big Difference

W

hile performance talk always seems to center around a bike, ATV or UTV engine, and how fast it can make that machine go, veteran riders and racers know better. Total performance, the kind that instills confidence and wins races, depends just as much on how quickly, safely and reliably that machine can be slowed down. They’re talking about the brakes.

When it comes to total performance, savvy riders know that precise, confident braking is as important as horsepower and torque. DP Brakes has the pads that can deliver that stopping power.

Chances are they’re talking about DP Brakes, too. For the road-racers and superstreet riders it’ll be the RDP X-Race Titanium or SDP SPORT HH+ pads, and for the off-road riders the SDP Pro-MX. DP has developed all those pads to exceed the demands of top-level riders and racers worldwide, and the sintered-metallic performance is immediate. DP pads are quick to break-in, the feel and control is strong and progressive and, with ceramic heat shields on the backing plates, they’re fade free. They’re also quiet, clean, easy on the rotors and they’ll last up to three-times longer than OE.

No surprise, for the 2020 season CSBK’s Pro Superbike and Pro Sportbike riders are using DP pads. NHRA Top/Fuel pilots have DP pads in the calipers and so do motocross racers, Enduro and GNCC champs. They’ve all chosen DP. DP performance and longevity isn’t limited to just racers. Riding schools like Reg Pridmore’s, and police fleets coastto-coast have discovered the DP difference. And all those the brake pads, the total performance pads, are available at Parts Unlimited. ■

alfer USA brake and clutch line kits are a new addition to the Parts Unlimited catalog this year, offering a long list of steel-braided cable options for off-road, dual-sport, sportbike and metric cruiser applications. That steel layer guarantees that the lines will not expand, so riders can count on continually reliable, consistent braking. In addition to providing consistency, the quality and design of the brake lines also mean that less pressure is required at the lever, so riders can stop faster without needing to use a lot of force. Each brake and clutch line kit comes with high-quality banjo bolts and washers, providing everything necessary for installation. The banjo fittings arrive pre-positioned for the particular application to further ease the installation process, though they can swivel up to 180 degrees if needed. All kits have instructions that are available online for step-by-step guidance at any time. orrect battery preparation is key to greatly reducing time-wasting warranty claims. Simply put, recharging every battery to 100 percent before it leaves the building, and then equipping the rider with an OptiMate 24/7 maintenance charger to protect the battery when the vehicle is parked, greatly increases the possibility of that battery far outliving its warranty. TecMate has the multi-bank charger solutions that can help any dealer fully prepare batteries, and diagnose and repair the few returned batteries. Both AGM batteries that are delivered with an acid pack, and STD flooded cell batteries that require acid prior to activation, must receive an activation charge after filling. Factory activated AGM batteries should be delivered 100 percent charged. OptiMate 3 x4 (p/n 3807-0263) and OptiMate 3 x2 (p/n 3807-0262) can typically activate new batteries overnight, and can recover flat batteries from as low as 2V. The chargers’ 24/7 maintenance program keeps batteries fresh and ready to sell.

The OptiMate PRO4 features four charging banks that can activate up to four batteries every hour.

For speedier activation OptiMate PRO4 (p/n 3807-0133) offers four fast charge banks that can activate up to four batteries each hour. The single bank OptiMate PRO-S (p/n 3807-0055) activates one battery hourly. Lithium batteries lose power more slowly on the shelf, but it is always best to recharge to 100 percent before sale. Parts Unlimited Lithium batteries have a built in threeLED test function that can confirm charge level. OptiMate Lithium 4s0.8A x4 (p/n 3807-0266) charges four batteries, and can test and recover flat batteries from as low as 0.5V, or reset the BMS / low voltage protection of a smart lithium battery. ■
