35 Years Strong by D on Em de
In the Colorado Rockies in 1994. What better playground could there have been to try out the new line of Moose riding gear?
In Durango, Dick Burleson (right) points out features of the XCR jacket modeled by star rider Steve Hatch. Wayne Cornelius (left) headed up the launch for Moose.
As it has done for over a century, a steam locomotive chugs its way through the canyons from Durango to Silverton. This trip included the editors of all the leading off-road magazines.
T
he celebration has begun. Thirty-five years ago, many trail riders in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado had one thing in common…spare parts and tools in their fanny packs from a company called Moose. Eventually riders in other areas learned about the brand, including 8-time Six Days gold medalist Dick Burleson, who wondered what else this company could achieve in the off-road market? Burleson teamed up with the late-Wayne Cornelius, then a buyer at Parts Unlimited, and they convinced the management to buy the Moose brand to use as a platform for not only an expanded line of tools and parts, but trail-specific riding gear. My first experience with Moose came in 1994 when I was invited to a press introduction in Colorado to kick off a new line of their riding gear. I’ve been to a lot of press introductions since from many leading motorcycle companies, but none stick with me today like that one. The press was flown into Durango where we were shuttled to a local hotel for a standard-issue press introduction conducted by Cornelius and Burleson. They showed the new Moose gear line, modeled by top offroad riders of the day such as Rodney Smith, Steve Hatch and others. We then loaded onto an old-time steam locomotive and were taken on that historic train ride from Durango to Silverton. Upon our arrival, we found that our trail bikes had been transported there. We all suited up into new Moose gear and rode the mountain trails over to our hotel in Ouray. The attending press members were highly impressed by the creative way that Moose unveiled its new gear, and by the features of the new product line. A few months later, Moose-clad Smith and Hatch joined other U.S. riders to represent the red, white and blue in the annual FIM International Six Days Enduro competition. Moose has had a great run in the motorcycle sport, but as you can see in this issue, the brand is strong and the products are great…ready for another 35 years! ■

NEWS EVENTS MotoAmerica Bringing Hillclimb Action to Laguna Seca Round
M
otoAmerica is thrilled to announce that the series, in conjunction with Elevated Action Sports, is bringing a hillclimb event to its fans at the GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey round, October 23-25, at the world famous WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, California. Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties are supporting sponsors of the 2020 MotoAmerica Series. The Laguna Seca round will also feature the debut of the Drag Specialties King of the Baggers V-Twin Invitational, the first-ever Performance Bagger race. The Speedfest Motoclimb will be held on Saturday, October 24 on the same hill that is home to Laguna Seca’s famous Corkscrew. The event will be produced by Elevated Action Sports (EAS), an extreme moto company based in the San Francisco Bay area that has been hosting motoclimb and extreme enduro races since 2015. The Speedfest Motoclimb will feature classes for many different types of motorcycles from minis to hooligan bikes and everything in between. Although the event will not feature pro classes, several nationally ranked Pro hillclimbers will be invited to perform for the fans on their high-performance, high-horsepower open bikes.
The Laguna Seca hill will be the place to be on the Saturday of the GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey as kids on minis and racers on motorcycles normally designed for street riding try to conquer the hillside adjacent to the Corkscrew. “We are really excited to have the Motoclimb event as part of our GEICO Motorcycle MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest at Monterey,” said MotoAmerica President Wayne Rainey. “It’s going to be a show that’s for sure. I can’t wait to see the smiles on our fans’ faces when they watch these guys and girls attack that hill that they’ve previously only seen spectators walk up. Working with Matt and his crew has been seamless and we know this is going to be a huge success and another quality addition to what we know is going to be a heck of a weekend of motorcycling activity in Monterey.” The Motoclimb race is in addition to a full slate of action on the famous WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca road course with a schedule that already features the five classes of the MotoAmerica Series – HONOS Superbike, Supersport, Liqui Moly Junior Cup, Twin Cup and Stock 1000. ■

Aid certification, and basic training in the treatment and detection of concussions, cardiac arrest, and heat illness. The Certification process has evolved since its inception and with the world’s current state of affairs, the process now can be completed 100 percent online. While motorcycle coaches continue to enroll in the process each week, the USMCA team continues to refine and update the course as new laws are passed into Congress to make the organization’s athletes and coaches safer. Recently, the Certification system was modified to include Abuse Prevention Training to ensure certified coaches are compliant with the Safe Sport Act. The USMCA aims to lower the barrier of entry into the sport of motorcycling by helping new riders find a Certified Coach and begin their motorcycle journey in a safe manner. Certified coaches can help grow our sport by providing current and returning riders the coaching they need to elevate their experience and expand their skills, whether the rider is a weekend warrior or at the top of the professional ranks. The growing interest in side-by-side racing in the United States has piqued the interest of Rockstar Energy, (title sponsor of the Canadian Rockstar Triple Crown MX Series) and Jetwerx, the series promoter. Jetwerx owner Justin Thompson believes UTV competition would be a great fit for the series.
families getting equipment and gear and planning their weekend excursions. It’s the strongest the dealership has seen since the Hully Gully track days of the 1980s. And, according to the dealership, it seems that the search for family fun is what’s driving business. Rocky Mountain Honda Powerhouse of Calgary, Alberta agrees. From unit sales to tire upgrades, bumpers, exhausts, lights and armour, the dealership reports that it has been busier in the ATV/UTV market. The Parts Canada dealer says it believes customers have more time on their hands an are staying closer to home to enjoy the outdoors. Even racing has reacted to the growing interest in the sideby-side market. In the Lucas Oil Off-Road Racing Series, the word is out and their schedule for side-by-side racing has been spreading like crazy. The US series has piqued the curiosity of Rockstar Energy, (title sponsor of the Canadian Rockstar Triple Crown MX Series) and Jetwerx, the series promoter. Both see this as an opportunity to bring a whole new style of racing to Canadian tracks. “It’s a good way to launch and build a brand that can cross pollinate and cultivate new partners, fans, and athletes,” says Jetwerx owner Justin Thompson. “The integration of UTV racing into an already established series
works well because of the size of the venues already hosting MotoX events. It’s easy to adapt the tracks that are already being built for motocross.” Canada is expected to start seeing side-by-sides hammering it down this August with an introduction to the new series, slated to be part of the 2021 Rockstar Triple Crown. With a three-round throw down, the Triple Crown is setting the landscape for bigger and better things to come. Manufacturers are on board and dealers and other sponsors are expected to follow. Even Polaris and Rockstar-sponsored racer, RJ Anderson, has been in discussions with the series promoter to help navigate the upcoming events in Canada. There is undeniably a growing demand for UTV riding areas in Canada, as some of many motocross track owners are witnessing. Registrations are up, sales are strong and as Parts Canada has seen, aftermarket parts are following the same trajectory with ATV/UTV add-ons up over 40 percent. Will Canadian dealers come along for the ride? With this kind of growth, it looks like they’re already in the cockpit, ready to steer the UTV market into new territory. With the chance to watch a Canadian UTV Championship on national television, they better buckle up for what looks like will be a wild ride. ■

According to figures compiled by Power Products Marketing (PPM), a Minneapolis-based research firm, leading UTV manufacturers sold 516,440 new units in North America in 2019, up +4.4 percent, compared to 2018. In 1999, suppliers moved 86,610 units. As for ATVs, figures compiled by PPM show leading ATV manufacturers sold 208,580 new units in the U.S. in 2019, up +1.8 percent compared to 2018. Let’s take a look back to see how these markets morphed over the past two decades.

U T V MA RKET S P OT L I GHT In North America, 5,876,661 UTVs were sold from 1999 through 2019, according to PPM. Of the UTVs sold from 1999 through 2019, 75 percent are a decade or less old.
MA OV RKET ER VI EW
From a historical perspective, the UTV market grew at a moderate average annual pace of about 5.5 percent between 1990 and 1996 as the availability of commercial applications bloomed and experienced consistent growth. Between 1996 and 2000, UTV sales more than doubled as the U.S. economy continued to expand, fueled by record consumer spending. At this point, much of the growth remained in the commercial side of the market although the consumer side also began finding traction. Then, spurred by the introduction of consumer-oriented machines like the Yamaha Rhino and later Polaris RZR, North American UTV sales began an astonishing six-year surge at an average annual growth of 20 percent until reaching a high of 269,700 units in 2008. In 2009, as the U.S. economy endured the worst recession since the Great Depression of the 1930s, UTV sales dropped -16 percent. However, they quickly bounced back +8.5 percent in 2010, and grew at an annual average pace of +12 percent in the following six years.
In its research, Power Products Marketing defines the five leading UTV segment types as Pure Utility Vehicles (PUV), Utility Cross Over Vehicles (UCV), Recreational Utility Vehicles (RUV), Sport Recreational Vehicles (SRV), and Super Sport Vehicles (SSV). PUV models accounted for 37 percent of total sales between 1999 and 2019, 30 percent were UCV models and 10 percent were SSV models.
The growth in post-recession UTV sales appears to have been spurred by financially secure consumer recreationists, the rapid development of an ever-larger selection of vehicle types, and what appears to be a growing consumer preference for choosing to spend dollars on “home-grown” pursuits that can be shared with friends and family. (This is mirrored by growing sales seen in the Recreational Vehicles/RV market.) Work-oriented vehicles from brands such as Club Car, John Deere, E-Z-GO and Kawasaki once led the UTV market. As years passed, the market transitioned to vehicles more adept to recreational activities, with leading brands including Can-Am, Honda, Kawasaki and Polaris. Most noticeable today is recent growth by Can-Am and Honda.

Designed more for work than play, PUVs often feature a large cargo area, utilityoriented suspension and come in 2WD or 4WD. Examples include the Kawasaki Mule Pro DX/DXT, Kubota RTV-X, Deere Utility Gators, and all diesel models. Benefitting from best-selling models such as the Polaris Ranger and Deere XUV825i, the Honda Pioneer models and the Kawasaki Mule PRO-FXT/FX, UCVs have been gaining big share over the past five years as consumers appear to be asking more from their UTVs than can be offered by a speed limited PUV.

Ultimately, the individual types of UTVs can most easily be segregated by the various user categories that combine to make up consumer applications, commercial applications and, to a much smaller extent, government applications. In 2000, the ratio between consumer and commercial applications was approximately 40/60, respectively. Today, consumer applications represent approximately 85 percent of sales, commercial applications account for 16 percent and government applications account for 1 percent.
AT V MA RKET S P OT L I GHT ATV sales were surpassed by UTV sales in 2011. Today, the ATV market is half the size of the UTV market. In the U.S. 9,486,435 ATVs were sold by 11 major brands from 1999 through 2019, according to PPM. Of the ATVs sold from 1999-2019, only 30.5 percent are a decade or less old. The North American market for ATVs from these major brands grew at a healthy +39.5% between 1994 and 1996, more than doubled (+104%) between 1996 and 2000, and realized +18% growth during the next three years until experiencing its historic sales high point of 812,755 units in 2004. The Recreation/Utility 4WD units led sales volume, but Sport 2WD model sales volume was growing quickly as consumers sought “fun” in a healthy economy. As with all powersports, the ATV segment was affected by the Great Recession and changing consumer tastes.

through mud is dirty work, but mud-phobic bars help release compacted mud to ensure continued traction. BFGoodrich developed UTV-specific tread compounds for the KM3 to enhance the tire’s grip on both rocks and other slick surfaces. Stable tread blocks provide a solid foundation when navigating through rocky conditions. The tire is also designed with a Linear Flex Zone, which enhances its ability to envelop objects while driving through tough environments that require airing down. Together, those performance features make the KM3 a capable climbing tire. The BFGoodrich KM3 UTV tire also has tough sidewall rubber and extended shoulder rubber to resist splitting and bruising. The brand’s Advanced Deflection Design enhances those durability characteristics. As a testament to this durability, Richardson reports, “I have
yet to have any punctures, cuts or tears, and I certainly have abused them a few times…and they show very little wear after 900 miles.” The KM3 UTV tire is adapted from the technology developed for the Baja 1000-winning Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 and Baja T/A KR2 tires. That racing pedigree has been an important part of BFGoodrich’s off-road development. Over the years, BFGoodrich has earned more SCORE Baja championships than any other competitor, and the company is the official tire partner of the Dakar Rally. In just six months across 2017 and 2018, BFGoodrich won the world’s toughest off-road races, including the Baja 1000, Dakar, King of the Hammers and the Mint 400. ■

OILS & LUBRICANTS
Synthetic for SxS
New Oil for Healthy Four-Wheelers The latest addition to the long lineup of Bel-Ray oils is ATV and SxS synthetic 4T 5W-50 engine oil. With an emphasis on better wear protection and minimized oil consumption, this oil is specifically formulated to meet the demands of Polaris ATV and side-by-side vehicles, although it is also a solid choice for all brands in those categories. Bel-Ray knows that those vehicles have to stand up to everything an off-road environment can throw at them, and that means the oil has to be just as tough. At the same time, the ATV and SxS synthetic oil helps extend the life of the engine to ensure that no trail goes unexplored. This premium multi-grade oil is formulated to perform well with both air-cooled and liquid-cooled engines. The low-volatility base oils help minimize oil consumption, while the high-viscosity index provides improved protection in high temperatures. One of the most notable attributes of the ATV and SxS synthetic 4T 5W-50 oil is its ability to protect the engine from rust, corrosion, wear and deposits. Bel-Ray’s Rust Defense System (RDS) protects engines from moisture contamination that can be a problem when a vehicle goes through streams or other wet environments. Bel-Ray has also formulated an exclusive anti-wear chemistry that reduces valve-train wear as well as scuffing to the pistons and rings, which helps keep an engine healthier and happier. The oil is also formulated to inhibit sludge and varnish formations. Not surprisingly, the features of the Bel-Ray ATV and SxS synthetic oil make it an attractive choice for both recreational and utility vehicle use.
This ATV and SxS synthetic 4T 5W-50 engine oil is the latest from Bel-Ray, and is formulated to meet the demands of Polaris ATV and side-by-side vehicles, as well as for all brands in those categories.

el-Ray doesn’t believe in a “one-oil-fits-all” approach, which is why the company has different formulas available for very specific facets of powersports. The right oil for a vintage Harley-Davidson motor is going to be different than what’s best for a new Polaris RZR motor.

W
hen Honda released the Talon, STI Powersports knew it needed to own one – for testing! And the company has been doing a lot of testing, starting with fitment.
Designing tires and wheels that fit is just as important as making tires that claw up rocky hills, and making wheels that endure those rocks. UTV tires must fit without the inner tread rubbing on bodywork, especially when cornering. For wheels, proper fitment means rims that don’t interfere with brake components or – at the other extreme – widen the UTV’s stance by several inches. Your customers have a range of riding interests and style desires. Some UTV owners are ready to modify their vehicles so 36-inch tires and wide rims fit, no matter the expense. That’s fine; you can support those drivers too. Most UTV owners who are ready to upgrade tires and wheels are looking for improvements in tire and wheel performance, without drastic changes to vehicle stance or handling. The Honda Talon, an increasingly popular UTV, requires a unique tire and wheel setup to maintain that factory stance. STI has the tire-and-wheel setup needed to keep the same track width front and rear, allowing the Honda Talon UTV to handle like it’s designed, with an STI-proven boost in strength and traction. The company fits STI HD9 Beadlock wheels and Chicane tires on the Talon for an ideal fit.

Choice Chains
Designed for Tough Use
A
TV chains are required to handle the increased torque output of moving two rear wheels as opposed to one wheel on a motorcycle. This increased torque load places an intense amount of stress on the chain which can increase or decrease depending on the engine load, the terrain and even the tire features. RK Chain has created chain models suitable for use with all ATVs and the various environments in which they perform.
520EXW One of RK Chain’s most popular ATV rated chain is the 520EXW. EXW is an XW-Ring sealed chain and is a great high-speed, extreme heat performance ATV chain. RK’s XW-Ring seals utilize triple barrier grease protection plus anti-debris technology that helps eliminate debris friction between internal components. The EXW was designed to handle ATV swingarm movement and increased torque stresses, and features an extremely long wear life. EXW chains also feature special thermal crack resistant sideplates to protect against thermal cracking. Thermal cracking can result from debris or components impinging the chain’s movement. The impingement causes the chain to quickly heat up and cool down in rapid succession. Over a period of time this thermal exposure can reduce the strength of the chain and/or cause a chain failure. It is vitally important for your customers to check their vehicle after a crash to make sure no debris such as rocks or even bike components are in contact with the chain. EXW is rated up to 750cc, and has a max tensile strength rating of 7,700 ft/lbs. EXW is lightweight and is perfectly suitable for professional racing use. The EXW has been the chain of choice for Team Duncan Racing for more than 10 years. The EXW is a multi-function chain as it can also be used for enduro and GNCC racing. Currently Team FMF KTM Factory Racing is using GB520EXW in their off-road racing series. EXW is available in Gold or Natural finish.
MAX X and MAX O The MAX X and MAX O chains are perfectly suitable for weekend warriors and riders who are not seeking a lightweight racing chain, but are still looking for performance. RK’s MAX series offers great performance while being economically priced.
MAX X If customers want to increase the wearlife of their chain, while still being economically priced, RK offers the MAX X chain series. The MAX X is an RX-ring sealed chain that offers great wear life. The MAX X is also designed to perform on ATVs, street and off-road machines. With a tensile strength rating of 9,000 ft/lbs., and a 750cc max cc rating, MAX X can handle all your customers’ ATV performance needs. The MAX X is available in a wide variety of colors including Gold, Natural, Chrome, Black/Gold, Black/Chrome, Red, Blue, Green, Orange, Pink or Yellow.

Value-Packed Replacement Parts
Quad Logic offers a wide range of high-quality and affordable replacement parts and accessories for four-wheelers from Polaris and some other manufacturers.

hen it comes time for your customers to replace some of those workaday replacement parts on their Polaris UTVs and ATVs – items like speed sensors and temperature sensors – there’s often a case of sticker shock when they see the cost of the OE parts. OEM replacement parts, including those mundane sensor units, can be difficult — and expensive — to replace, so having a source with more affordable parts is important. One source is Quad Logic, a company that was formed in 2012 to address the high cost and scarcity of Polaris fourwheeler replacement components and parts. Especially electrical components, although today Quad Logic’s line includes a wide range of electrical items, engine parts and more for vehicles from Polaris, as well as from some other brands. Now here’s some more good news – your link to Quad Logic is as close as where you station your Parts Unlimited catalog at the parts counter. Quad Logic’s parts and accessories have been offered through Parts Unlimited since 2016, and the list of part numbers available is always growing. With Quad Logic’s lineup of replacement pieces, your customers are getting value-packed parts that often surpass OE in terms of quality. For instance, the company’s

replacement speed sensor for the Polaris Sportsman ATV features a billet aluminum housing, rather than the hard plastic housing of OE part. “CNC billet aluminum provides a more durable housing for exposure to dirt, rocks, and debris than does plastic,” explains Quad Logic owner Robb Johnson. Quad Logic also incorporates heavy-duty wiring protected by durable plastic sheathing into its sensor units to assure a solid electrical connection at all times. When it comes to those hard-working ATVs and UTVs, engine cooling is a priority, and the best way to monitor engine temperature is with reliable temperature and fan sensors. Quad Logic’s temperature and fan sensors solve a variety of engine cooling issues at an affordable cost. They are designed to be an exact OE replacement component, right down to the same temperature settings as stock units. These are only a few examples of what Quad Logic offers. Check out the 2020 ATV/UTV catalog to see the complete range of items carried by Parts Unlimited. “We’re a small company with minimal overhead, so we can keep our pricing competitive,” Johnson says. “Best of all, many of our components are made here in the USA.” ■

New Products for Off-Road Convenience

ike many brands, Moose Utility Division is going virtual with its current product launches. The latest round of new products particularly focuses on off-road versatility, with a winch accessory kit and two different cargo boxes for the Polaris RZR. New bus bars keep the power options open for customers who like to add electronic accessories to their vehicles. The winch accessory kit (p/n 4505-0806) includes all of those small parts that make a big difference when it comes to getting out of a sticky situation. The snatch block pulley can handle a load of up to 8,000 pounds, and it can be positioned to change the angle of the pull if winching in a straight line isn’t possible. The snatch block significantly increases the pulling force of a winch while reducing the stress on the winch itself at the same time – motor heat is reduced, the gears are less stressed and less power is pulled from the battery.

Winch accessory kit
The kit also comes with a ½-inch D-shackle that can stand the strain, plus 8 feet of 1-inch tree trunk protector to ensure winching without leaving behind any damage. A tool bag is included in the kit, too. The two new RZR cargo boxes from Moose Utility Division are constructed from a low-density polyethylene to make them both durable and lightweight at the same time. If there is such a thing as “performance storage,” then this is it. The cargo boxes don’t encumber the vehicle with a lot of extra weight, but still provide plenty of space for stashing on-the-trail necessities. Watertight seals on the lids keep everything inside completely dry, and the box latches can be secured with a padlock to make sure everything stays put.
Moose Utility Division’s new RZR XP II cargo box
The RZR XP II cargo box (p/n 3540-0061) fits a range of the 2014-19 RZR two-seater and four-seater configurations, while the RZR PZ6 cargo box (p/n 3540-0062) is made to fit the four-seater models. The PZ6 box is also compatible with most OEM rack extensions and the Click 6 retractable harness. The new four-position (p/n 2120-1040) and seven-position (p/n 2120-1041) bus bars from Moose Utility Division alleviate the problem of having multiple connections on battery terminals. The bus bars allow various power accessories to be safely and easily connected to their own terminal points. Power is evenly distributed via stainless steel studs that allow for excellent electrical contact. The bus itself is tin-plated solid copper, which provides maximum conductivity as well as corrosion resistance. A sturdy polycarbonate housing keeps everything safely tucked away. ■
With this new seven-position bus bar, your customers can safely and easily connect a variety of powered accessories.

Lower Price Valve Jobs

A
Designed right alongside Hot Cams camshafts for these same engines, the Conversion Kit buckets and retainers are totally compatible with OEM valves, springs, camshafts, as well as with all aftermarket high-performance camshafts, including the ones from Hot Cams.
On some of the machines using those engines it seems like half the bodywork has to first come off, and that’s before the tedious process of valve adjustment can begin, a process involving removal of the camshafts themselves.
The kit’s new buckets and retainers are tough, too. They’re Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) coated for extended durability over the OE parts. More importantly, they accept those 9.48mm valve shims, eliminating once and for all the need for an assortment of expensive factory shim buckets at every valve adjustment.
djusting the valves on Polaris 570, 900, 1000 and Turbo Prostar engines isn’t a quick and easy job. Even getting clear access to the top of the engine to begin that bit of required maintenance – and Polaris recommends adjustment at 200 hours or 2,000 miles, whichever comes first – isn’t always easy.
All that’s just the labor part of the job. Resetting valve clearances to factory specifications, plus-or-minus 0.001inch, requires the use of costly OEM shim buckets and, depending upon how many might be needed, that partslist can get pretty expensive. Hot Cams has a better idea. It’s the Shim Conversion Kit. The new kit won’t speed up that valve-adjustment job,

hether it’s a stock replacement or a performance upgrade, EBC Brakes aims to give customers in all powersports segments a combination of quality, consistency and affordability. ATV and UTV customers haven’t been left out of the equation. ATV and UTV riders who simply want to replace their brake setup can choose from EBC’s standard replacement options. Since EBC is better known as a performance brand, though, why stop at standard? The company offers upgraded braking components, like the UTVX rotors and SXR HH pads. Those rotors and pads are designed to pair together to provide optimal performance with a combination of consistent braking characteristics in all riding scenarios and an extended life compared to a stock braking setup. The EBC UTVX rotors are notable for their vee-contour design and light weight, two attributes that make them ideal for the latest performance UTV models like the Honda Talon and Kawasaki Teryx. There are applications available for a lot of ATV and UTV models, including oversize kits for the Can-Am Maverick and Polaris RZR. The contoured design helps clear the mud and debris off the rotor to ensure consistent, reliable braking even on the dirtiest, muddiest trails. In addition to the selfcleaning perk, the vee-contour also gives the braking setup a dose of style. Using premium German mill-rolled steel, EBC Brakes manufactures the rotors in-house in the company’s headquarters in the UK, guaranteeing extremely high quality. EBC’s SXR HH brake pads are the perfect complement for the UTVX rotors. The HH friction rating delivers maximum brake effect. Not surprisingly, the SXR HH pads feature EBC’s race-derived compound formula. This premium blend of materials is what gives the pads that HH friction rating as well as excellent heat stability to ensure predictable braking in all conditions. The pads are designed to provide outstanding longevity in addition to outstanding performance, especially when matched with EBC Brakes UTVX rotors. They are resistant to mud, sand and abrasion, and they have a longer wear life compared to standard replacement pads. When combined with the UTVX rotors, both the pads and rotors benefit from an extended life cycle. EBC offers the SXR HH pads for most popular UTV models.

Value Packed and Feature Rich
F
or the past few years Z1R’s Rise full-face helmet line has been a favorite among customers, and for good reason. Features include a lightweight polycarbonate shell, strong D-ring strap closure, durable mesh-screen chin piece, flow-through ventilation, and proprietary Child, Youth and Adult sizing. With all those features, the Rise has everything expected in a top-shelf helmet. About the only thing missing is a top-heavy price tag – suggested retail pricing for individual models runs from $79.95 to $99.95, depending on the model.
many adults and parents. The Rise Evac Child and Youth helmets have dedicated shell configurations to fit smaller heads. That translates to less mass and weight on a younger rider’s head.

The Evac’s Adult sizes also share similar benefits from differing shell sizes. For instance, an Adult size small will have a different shell size than the much larger XXL that Z1R offers. Again, the benefit is helmet mass and size to match the rider’s overall body size. Some female off-road enthusiasts, in particular, enjoy this feature.
Z1R’s Rise range of full-face helmets has proven popular with recreational off-road riders and side-by-side enthusiasts. Available in three different sizes, there’s sure to be a fit for every member of the family.

That low price point makes the Rise a great value for a DOTand ECE-approved off-road helmet for any powersports user. And, we haven’t even begun to address the stylish graphics for the ever popular Rise Camo or the most recent addition to the lineup, the Rise Evac that boasts graphics so bold and colorful they’re sure to attract some attention while out riding. Indeed, the new standout graphics have been so well received among recreational off-road riders and side-byside enthusiasts that the Evac line has become one of the top sellers in the Z1R lineup. And, with Child/Youth/Adult sizing that share similar graphics (five patterns to select from), the Rise is especially favored by family members who share the trail in their four-seater UTVs, or aboard individual off-road motorcycles or ATVs. “The Rise Evac has been wildly successful for us,” says Z1R general manager Brad Kruckenberg, noting that the new and colorful graphics have really struck a chord with customers. Style and appearance are important, but the Evac’s comfort and safety factor is what especially appeals to

A Race-Tested ATV/UTV Oil formula makes it ideal for engines that are put under extreme duress in offroad environments. Suitable for both air-cooled and water-cooled 4-stroke engines, this oil ensures maximum performance while also protecting the engine under even the most difficult of conditions. The most noticeable effect of the LIQUI MOLY ATV oil is the ease with which the clutch engages and disengages during shifting. While that certainly makes the ride more enjoyable, the best benefits of the oil are what the rider can’t see and feel while bouncing down the trail. Optimum lubrication, outstanding engine cleanliness, excellent friction and minimum wear all add up to making the maintenance side of things a lot more enjoyable, too. ATV and UTV engines will run better for longer, which results in lower maintenance costs and less time spent in the garage instead of on the trail. LIQUI MOLY tested the ATV oil across a variety of vehicles, including on some with catalytic converters as well as race vehicles. This ensures optimal performance and engine protection across the spectrum of work, recreational and competitive use.

he 2020 Supercross season is finished, and as we all know it has been a unique season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Parts Unlimited/THOR riders Cooper Webb, Dylan Ferrandis, Shane McElrath, and Justin Cooper started out the season strong, beginning in January 2020, with race wins and podiums that put them all in the hunt for championships and title defenses. The racing was tight, tough and hard-fought, and it looked like it was going to be a great season. Then, like nearly all of the world’s sports, the Supercross season was postponed due to the global pandemic. Postponed, but not cancelled. Finally, after an 85-day layoff from March through May, the Supercross season finished in dramatic style with a stretch of seven events in 22 days without any fans at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, Utah. There were no live fans in the stadium, but there were TV cameras and the races were televised, so fans were able to witness some of the best races of the season. Your Parts Unlimited/THOR riders were ready for the marathon of races through to the finale, as they had been training, practicing, riding and wrenching during the lay-off so they could come back strong and ready to race.

THOR/Star Racing Yamaha’s Dylan Ferrandis had an exciting day at the season finale in Salt Lake City. He came into the race with a seven-point lead for the 250cc Supercross West Championship, confident that he would prevail and defend his 2019 250SX West title. His nerve-racking day started in his heat race when he was plowed under in the first turn. Unhurt, Ferrandis ran to his bike at the bottom of the pile-up. By the time he got going again, the pack, and his chance for a direct transfer to the main event, were gone. Next up he went to the Last Chance Qualifier (the first of his career) and he won. However, since it was the LCQ, Ferrandis was given the last pick on the gate for the main event Just seven points behind Dylan was Austin Forkner, who had finished third in the 250SX West heat race for a direct transfer to the main event and therefore had a much better pick on the gate than Ferrandis. When the gate dropped for the main event, Ferrandis found himself in a fair position and simply wanted to catch to Forkner, get on his back wheel and secure the championship. Then the race was red-flagged when Forkner went down, and was

THOR/Star Racing Yamaha’s Justin Cooper had a good season, starting with a win at the opener at Anaheim 1 in January, followed by a handful of podiums throughout the season. It all added up to second in the 250cc Supercross West point’s chase behind Ferrandis, making it a 1-2 finish in the 250cc Supercross West Championship for Parts Unlimited/THOR. Cooper should be even stronger outdoors having finished third in the 2019 250cc MX National Championships with multiple podiums and an overall victory in Florida in 2019. Fellow THOR/Star Racing Yamaha teammate, Shane McElrath had an outstanding 250cc Supercross East season, winning three races and scoring a handful of other podiums. not able to make the restart. With Forkner out, Ferrandis had some breathing room and was able to race to fourth place in the race and first place in the 250cc Supercross West Championship with three wins on the season. “Right now, it’s crazy,” Ferrandis said, “The most difficult day of my life, so much emotion today after being in the LCQ. And in the Main, we needed to battle from the outside (of the starting gate). I got a good start and wanted to push. And when I saw Austin crash, it broke my heart for him. We had a red flag and had to restart. I got another good start and it was so amazing. But I never expected to do back-toback championships in my life. It’s unbelievable.” Ferrandis is looking forward to the upcoming MX Nationals next, which are slated to start on August 15th at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch in Tennessee. In 2019 he came in second in the 250cc MX National Championship with multiple race wins and podiums. This will be Dylan’s final season in 250cc Supercross; with two back-to-back 250SX West Championships to his credit he will be moving up to the 450cc Supercross class in 2021. With his great work ethic and natural talent, his progress will be fun to watch. “The final round of Supercross at Salt Lake City Seven wasn’t ideal. Obviously we fell short of the ultimate goal – winning the championship this year – but we fought hard throughout everything I was dealt this year to get second in the series,” Webb said. “I learned a lot this year and never gave up. We’ll try again next year to get the #1 plate back. We did accomplish 13 out 17 podiums and 4 wins on the season. Time to regroup and go after my first 450cc Outdoor Motocross Championship.” On hand for the season finale in Salt Lake City, THOR pro rider support manager Andy Gustafson called the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross series “one for the record books!” given the worldwide spread of the coronavirus and its impact on the industry. “Who would ever think that the last seven races would all be held in one location for three straight weeks? It’s unimaginable! All our hats are off to Feld Entertainment, AMA and FIM for acting fast and making a plan of attack to restart and finish the Supercross series in a safe manner,” Gustafson said. He said the seven rounds were some of the best and most fun racing that fans have ever seen – whether in person or on TV. “The riders really had a difficult environment to adapt to with the high altitude, warmer temps, backto-back racing all taking its toll on the field regarding recovery times come race day. Dylan Ferrandis took these challenges and proved once again why he is a Champion scoring his second 250 West Title!” ■

rail and tarmac. Two wheels and four wheels. A lot of powersports enthusiasts love having the best of both worlds, whether that means owning a motorcycle and an UTV or having the ability to tackle both street and off-road with an Adventure bike. Of course, an Adventure tire needs to offer the best of both worlds, too. In fact, when Dunlop conducted consumer research prior to developing a new Adventure tire, the response was clear – riders want a true 50/50 tire option that ensures a confident, enjoyable experience, no matter where the route may lead. Compromise is not something customers want in a tire. The result of Dunlop’s research and development resulted in the Trailmax Mission, the first off-road capable DOT tire to be completely designed, developed and manufactured in the U.S. at Dunlop’s factory in Buffalo, New York. The Mission offers riders high performance and reliable grip on any surface as well as outstanding mileage. Every detail of the Trailmax Mission is designed to straddle the line between a street tire and an off-road tire. The tread is a perfect example of the balance between off-road traction and street performance. The aggressive tread pattern includes Dunlop’s Staggered Step tread blocks, which give the side knobs more rigidity while creating more biting edges. This ensures that even as the tread wears down, there is still plenty of traction. In

addition to the tread’s outstanding performance on hard terrain, the wrap-around lugs on the edge of the tire provide a layer of protection against sharp rocks while also boosting traction. When it comes to street riding, the tread design is especially good at expelling water because of deep integrated grooves. Dunlop developed all-new compounds for the Trailmax Mission. The compounds serve a triple purpose, ensuring stability in both on-road and off-road conditions as well as extending the longevity of a tire. That ability to go the distance doesn’t apply just to street riding: Dunlop performed extensive testing on a wide variety of surfaces to hone the compound for maximum mileage. While the Trailmax Mission is a motorcycle tire, it actually has origins in a truck tire. Dunlop was re-acquired by Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) back in 2015, and since SRI is the parent brand of Falken Tires, that opened the door to new collaborations. Dunlop engineers used the successful Falken AT3W, a tire built for all-terrain light trucks, as their inspiration for the Trailmax Mission. The new tire was tested and refined at the Dunlop proving grounds in Huntsville, Alabama, and other locations around the country over the course of two years. The result of all of that time and careful engineering is a tire with a knobby-like off-road feel and grippy, confidenceinspiring street performance. It’s not a compromise. It’s a great combination of both worlds. ■

35 Years Building an Off-Road Legacy
A
s the saying goes, with age comes wisdom. Knowing this, it’s easy to see why Moose Racing is such a giant in the world it knows best – all things off-road. The company has earned that wisdom through more than three decades or dirt, grease and bragging rights. Moose Racing will be celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2021. Back in the mid-1980s, the company was really just a group of riders who simply wanted better hard parts for their off-road adventures. Living and riding in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains, the riders were used to ever-changing conditions of both the landscape and the
weather. Although they were up to the challenge, their bikes often were not. They developed their own modest collection of hard parts, which became the first products to be offered by the new company called Moose Racing. That humble beginning soon exploded into a bona fide phenomenon. More hard parts followed, and more and more riders started buying them. By the early 1990s, Moose Racing was ready to branch into off-road gear to make sure riders were as well-equipped as their bikes. When the Zink Ranch outside Tulsa, Oklahoma hosted the FIM International Six Days of Enduro (ISDE) in 1994, Moose Racing knew that it would be the perfect backdrop for its gear debut. Top world riders showed up at the competition in headto-toe Moose Racing gear. Names like Steve Hatch, Kelby Pepper, Jeff Russell and Rodney Smith were all there representing the brand. It wasn’t long before other riders, from pro racers to recreational enthusiasts, followed suit. Moose Racing had established itself as a leading off-road brand in under a decade.

Quality and innovation are two of the reasons why Moose Racing has continued to be at the forefront of the scene, but the brand’s longevity also has to do with its support of the sport at all levels. In addition to its sponsored pro riders, Moose Racing also supports racing series throughout the United States, ensuring that riders continue to have great tracks and competitive series to enjoy.

In some ways, Moose Racing hasn’t changed a lot from its earliest days – the company still produces hard parts that are designed by riders, for riders. Practical solutions and performance parts are still a big part of the company, from handlebars to foot pegs to wheels. As UTV riding has exploded in popularity, Moose Racing has added parts for those vehicles, too, alongside the off-road bike and ATV selection. Nevertheless, a lot of riders associate Moose Racing with gear first and hard parts second. That comes, of course, from Moose’s continued presence in racing on both the national and worldwide stage. Over the years, championship-winning riders like Kurt Caselli, Ty Davis, David Knight and Mike Lafferty have stood on the podium again and again while wearing Moose Racing gear. From desert racing to tackling the woods in GNCC competition and in motocross with names like John Dowd and Team Babbitts Kawasaki, Moose Racing has become firmly embedded in off-road racing culture.

he Icon Variant Pro helmet checks a lot of boxes. It’s got a distinct style, it’s lightweight, the shield is easy to swap out, the interior allows customfit configurations, it’s well-vented, and it’s ready for wiring up with a Bluetooth device. But for all of its attributes, it’s hard to blame anyone who buys a Variant Pro based on the looks alone. The Variant Pro is the evolution of Icon’s Variant helmet, so it’s got the same DNA but a better, stronger, lighter make-up. The Fiberglass/Dyneema/Carbon matrix shell has been refined in a wind tunnel to achieve that perfect balance of optimal performance and minimal bulk. Inside, the dual-density EPS core adds an extra layer of defense while maintaining a slim profile. Strategically-placed cutouts in the EPS liner provide space for installing Bluetooth speakers. At the back of the helmet, the shell’s unique cut-away shape channels air up to the back of the head. This design also allows the Bluetooth device’s cables to be cleanly routed, all while keeping air flowing. With the Variant Pro, a rider can communicate without sacrificing looks. The Variant Pro has an additional six air intakes and four exhaust ports that carve deep channels through the EPS liner, so staying cool is easy. Inside the helmet, Icon offers more fitment options than ever with a five-piece liner instead of the traditional three. That results in 27 different fitment combinations to choose from to create just the right fit for every unique head. The liner is made from Hydradry to help wick moisture away from the skin to keep riders dry and comfortable.

Icon also has replacement shields in various levels of tint, including the new RST Green finish.
Icon’s latest tool-less shield change system allows a rider to swap shields in a matter of seconds, and of course there are multiple shield options available separately. There are varying levels of tint for Variant Pro shields depending on how much sunlight a rider wants getting through, though of course the tint colors offer an extra shot of style, too. The visor is fog-free, produces minimal lift, increases peripheral vision and provides a distortionfree line of sight. HELMETS
Style and Technology Introducing the Reflex Helmet
I
t’s a helmet that had to come from THOR, the company that has outfitted riders and racers for decades with the gear they not only need, but want. Whether it’s racewear kits, boots, gloves, goggles or anything with the THOR name, it’s gear designed by riders and racers, for riders and racers. The latest addition is the Reflex helmet, new and available now. The Reflex is a perfect mix of style and technology, available with a carbon fiber or fiberglass composite shell. Each one features the new Koroyd® technology, that’s integrated into premium dual-density EPS liners as well as the MIPS Brain Protection System. First and foremost are the features and technologies that making the new Reflex Helmets purpose-built, designed and constructed to support a racer’s needs should things go wrong. Combined together, the Koroyd technology and MIPS Brain Protection System, are what THOR calls, “the ultimate damage control system.” The Koroyd tech consists of tightly packed sections of fused-together tubes inside the EPS liner that crumple instantly and consistently on impact. THOR explains that this helps absorb force in a controlled manner to minimize energy transferred to the head. Meanwhile, the MIPS BPS helps reduce harmful rotational motion that could otherwise be transferred to the brain during an incident. THOR notes that equally important to all this is the Reflex helmet’s “direct and angled” impact protection design that helps to protect the skull and brain and further reduce the risk of serious injury. As much a work of art as they are a high-level piece of riding gear, the Reflex Helmets are purpose-built technological marvels. The range starts with the topof-the-line Reflex Polar Carbon, a helmet with a shell of pre-injected carbon fiber sheets that increase strength as they decrease weight. Up next are the other Reflex helmet models, the Accel, the Apex and the Blackout, which are offered with premium fiberglass composite shells. In addition to those high-level protective features, the entire Reflex range also includes moisture-wicking and anti-microbial DRYFORM comfort liners, and the contoured cheek pads are removable and washable. The Reflex helmets have quick-release pull tabs, lightweight stainless-steel D-rings, adjustable visors, and an advanced breathability, ventilation and cooling system. THOR’s Reflex helmet line, including the Polar Carbon model, feature new Koroyd technology and the MIPS Brain Protection System.

The Reflex helmet also features significantly enhanced airflow for extreme cooling and comfort. The Reflex offers extensive intake venting funneled into strategic channels for added airflow that’s enhanced by the Koroyd material inside the liners. This helps carry the airflow out to multiple exhaust vents. It’s all designed to accelerate the cooling and venting and it adds up to controlled airflow in a precise and effective manner.
The Reflex helmet is the culmination of hours of rider input, coupled with plenty of technical innovation, all combined with THOR’s decades of experience providing off-road riders with the equipment they need and want. You can bet they’re going to want the Reflex helmet, whether it’s the carbon fiber Reflex Polar or one of the composite-shell models – the Accel, the Apex or the Blackout. ■

o matter what kind of riding your customers do, eventually they’re going to get rained on. It happens to all riders. With the new Tørke Dry Bag collection from Kuryakyn, the rider might get wet, but their gear will stay completely dry. Kuryakyn designed the Tørke collection for anyone with an adventurous streak. However a rider seeks adventure, whether it is with a cruiser, Adventure bike, ATV, UTV or any vehicle in between, the Tørke gear is ready for whatever comes. The collection includes 24-liter panniers, a seven-liter tank bag, a 25-liter backpack and a 35-liter duffel bag. Tørke is the Norwegian word for “drought.” No matter how wet it is outside, the inside of a Tørke bag will be dry thanks to its fully-waterproof double-coated TPU material and RF-welded seams. The zippers are all IPX7rated, which is the submersible level. In other words, if a rider drops their bike during a creek crossing, all of the gear inside the Tørke will stay dry. The integrated air/ purge valves minimize space but also provide buoyancy,

a perk that makes the bags ideal for boating, too. Inside each bag, a removable highvisibility support structure provides shape retention and makes it easier to see anything being stored. Each piece on the Tørke collection has a variety of storage pockets both internally and externally to help a rider stay organized. Since the Tørke collection is so versatile, so are the mounting options. Each bag comes with mounting strap kits that can be used on a wide variety of vehicles, and there are no mounting brackets required. A variety of secure mounting points on the bags allows them to be mounted in different configurations to best suit the vehicle. The 24-liter Tørke panniers are extremely lightweight. Storage options include interior hook-&-loop pouches, exterior waterproof pockets for small item storage, elastic water bottle pockets, removable cargo nets for external storage and neoprene pockets for tablets or laptops. Lockable zipper pulls and convenient carry handles are other perks.
The seven-liter Tørke tank bag has a high-strength magnetic base plus mounting straps for non-magnetic tanks. A clear, touchscreen-friendly pouch is completely waterproof, so any GPS or other electronic device stays dry. The tank bag comes with detachable backpack straps for further versatility. Kuryakyn designed the 25-liter Tørke backpack for ergonomics. Adjustable and breathable padded mesh shoulder straps detach at the base so it can be converted to vehicle luggage with the included straps and tie-down mounts. An internal neoprene pocket can hold a tablet or laptop, while an external waterproof pouch keeps necessities handy. Riders who want a lot of storage space will like the 35-liter Tørke duffle bag. The removable shoulder strap and external cargo net expand the packing possibilities, and even the external waterproof storage pouch has a lockable zipper. ■

All Rides Covered Tires for a Range of Bikes
W
hether it’s on-road or off, Bridgestone makes popular tires in every category. However, as motorcycles improve, so must the tires. For 2020, Bridgestone’s latest additions not only meet the demands of today’s motorcycles, but also give classic bikes the advantage of modern rubber.
Racing Technology for The Road Bridgestone’s racing history has translated directly into the RS11 tire – Bridgestone’s premium road/track day tire for modern sportbikes. The tires are now available through Parts Unlimited. The RS11 has a similar tread pattern as the Battlax R11 and the V-MS-Belt ensures a more uniform Bridgestone RS11 load across the tread. Silica-rich construction provides excellent warm-up times and impressive wet grip. Its 3LC compound configuration places a harder compound in the center for durability, and a softer compound on the sides for better grip. Bridgestone’s Cap and Base technology gives the rear extra stability. If your customers are primarily street riders, but like to do the occasional track day, then the RS11 is for them.
Today’s Tires for Yesteryear’s Machines The successor to the Battlax BT45, the Bridgestone Battlax BT46 is a bias-ply tire for vintage sport and touring motorcycles. In fact, the BT46 is currently available in eight front sizes and 17 rear sizes. A thoroughly modern tire for your customers’ classic machines, this bias-ply design can be used with or without tubes (depending on application).
BT46
Wet performance is improved over the BT45 without sacrificing dry performance. It does this through its Silica-rich construction to give it the performance your customers expect from Bridgestone.
Don’t Forget Scooters! Today’s small- to medium-displacement scooters have more performance than they get credit for. With the Bridgestone Battlax SC your customers get sport-inspired tires ideal for sub 400cc scooters. Its V-shaped tread pattern delivers sporty handling and its wide grooves move water efficiently, allowing the rubber to meet the road. The Bridgestone Battlax Scooter SC2 is like a sportbike tire for maxi-scooter models, because it is a sportbike tire for that range of scooters. Modeled after the Battlax Hypersport S21, it incorporates the same technology for precision and cornering grip and even features the same tread pattern. Lastly, the Battlax Scooter SC2 Rain takes after the Battlax Sport Touring T31 and gives the sport-touring maxi-scooterist another option compared to the sport-oriented SC2. Similar in construction to the standard SC2, the SC2 Rain’s grooves are optimized for improved water drainage and excellent handling. Basically, your customers get a confidenceinspiring sport touring tire, Battlax SC2 Rain scooter tires especially in wet conditions.
Bridgestone Does Hard Enduro Extreme off-road conditions require an extreme tire, like the Battlecross E50 Extreme. The E50 Extreme is Bridgestone’s gummy-est enduro tire. Based on the standard E50, this extra soft compound gives maximum grip. Available only in a 140/80-18 rear tire size, the E50 Extreme’s widely spaced center tread blocks reduce the chance of mud and dirt getting trapped, while Castle Block technology provide an added biting surface for better traction. The E50 Extreme also utilizes Bunker technology as additional bite points for maximum traction in soft terrain. ■

Vintage Shine
What’s Old is New Again bikes. By the time he was building pipes to sell to other riders he had more than a decade of research and development in his back pocket from his own racing career. Hindle took what he had learned and applied it to the machines he knew to make simple, well-crafted exhaust systems that always managed to pull out a little more horsepower. Even though Hindle still has designs and tooling in-house for many of the models, bikes are typically brought back to headquarters and reassessed from the ground up. These vintage exhaust systems are heavily researched and fully developed to fit and feel like a modern pipe, with one major difference – their appearance. Despite dyno tuning to modern metallurgy, every system is made to appear period correct, which is hugely important for your customers and any enthusiast who knows the history of a certain model. That deep connection with the motorcycling community is what influences many of these vintage exhaust systems in the first place. Having an example of a particular bike in house is crucial, and so when Hindle fields a request

ith each passing year, more bikes become vintage and finding parts to keep them up and running becomes a bigger challenge. Over the past five years, Canadian company Hindle has been leaning into its four decades of experience to build exhaust systems for those vintage machines. What began as a fringe project for a handful of bikes has grown into a lineup of dozens of options, covering everything from late ’60s Honda CB350 twins to liquidcooled Suzuki GSX-R750s from the mid ’90s. With growing demand and motorcycles aging out constantly, Hindle adds more models to its line of vintage pipes every year. A range of those exhausts is available from Parts Unlimited. Lang Hindle founded the company bearing his name in 1982, the year he stopped racing professionally. However, his pipe designs started in the late 1960s on his own race

from a rider looking for a custom pipe, the company sometimes offers to bring the bike to headquarters. In those cases the R&D is done on the customer’s bike, who ends up with an exhaust fitted for their machine, while Hindle and the rest of the motorcycling world gets a freshly designed pipe for an old bike. While Hindle’s earlier exhausts were often built from nickel-plated steel, the new vintage systems are made from heat- and corrosion-resistant 304 and 321 stainless steel. This means the systems are light (many of them under 10 pounds) and offer good durability against the elements. ■

HELMETS
Introducing the SM5 Protection for the Masses
Alpinestars’ new SM5 helmet is lightweight, packed with protective features and is designed for extreme rider comfort.
A
lpinestars’ new SM5 helmet is the result of more than five years of intensive study, development and testing. The company’s product experts scrutinized every possible aspect to engineer a helmet that is thoughtfully designed to deliver optimal protection and comfort. This lightweight helmet features a thermo-injected shell incorporating a special polymer blend, and features varying degrees of thickness to deliver the optimal combination of impact protection and light weight. The five density EPS liner ensures the correct construction in the right area for enhanced impact absorption. Key safety design features include an engineered raised area with padding to effectively reduce the forces transmitted to the collarbone, an emergency release system, and removable cheek pads. The latter permit the safe and easy removal of the cheek pads while the helmet is still on, while a patented visor release system ensures the visor is released with the correct pre-determined amount of force, no matter of the angle of impact.
This attention to detail extends to the soft, textile chin strap, which at 26mm is wider than certification requirements for optimal safety and rider comfort. Stainless steel D-rings ensure a tight and secure fit. Rider comfort was heavily factored into the SM5’s design, and the SM5 boasts a visor that has been specifically designed to direct air into the ports for enhanced airflow. Multi-air inlets and exhaust ports ensure high levels of heat transfer exchange to deliver effective ventilation. This helmet is also equipped with hydration tube channels that are integrated into the helmet’s cheek pads for convenience and performance. A removable comfort liner with Silverplus® treated anti-bacterial fabrics for excellent moisture wicking, effectively draws perspiration away from the skin. The anti-microbial liner is also washable. The SM5 helmet’s 3D contoured foam ensures rider comfort. The SM5 helmet conforms to both DOT certification and ECE homologation for use worldwide. A size medium weighs 2.77 pounds (ECE) 3 pounds (DOT). ■

ADJUSTABLE RISERS
Excellent Ergos
Anti-Vibration Pivot Risers
I
t’s amazing how swapping one or two components on a motorcycle can effectively change the bike’s character. Take, for instance, the Rox Speed FX handlebar risers for Adventure bikes. Elevating the handlebar 1 inch to 5 inches can drastically improve the bike’s ergonomics to better conform to the rider’s needs. According to Chris Olin, owner of Rox Speed, customers should fit their bikes to their bodies. “Because if your customers are going to adjust their bodies to fit their bikes’ ergonomics, chances are that that might not give them as comfortable a ride as it could be.”
The pivot risers from Rox Speed FX can not only be adjusted for the optimum handlebar position, but are also designed to help reduce vibrations.
That line of reasoning is why, years ago, Rox Speed began offering components to modify Adventure bikes and other style motorcycles, along with ATVs and snowmobiles. Among those components were billet aluminum handlebar risers to elevate handgrip position to a more useable, and in some cases tolerable, level. Rox Speed’s range of risers typically extends bar height from 1 inch to 5 inches, fitting a wide range of applications. Eventually, though, the Rox team realized placing the rider’s arms and hands at a more suitable position was only half the battle. There was another culprit in the comfort equation to contend with – vibration, especially when it came to Adventure bikes, many that favor chassis rigidity over rider comfort. “The solution is to isolate that vibration as best we can from the rider’s hands,” Olin explains. Thus came Rox Speed’s Pivoting Anti-Vibe Risers, a unique and interesting design that not only quells much of the vibration before it reaches the rider’s hands, but also allows for a broad range of handlebar positioning in relation to the rider’s arm spread and shoulder height. The pivoting risers’ articulating design allows for a seemingly infinite range of adjustments, too. And, by incorporating rubber dampeners on each of the lower riser blocks the motorcycle’s vibration pulses are harnessed and reduced there so they don’t reach the handgrips. “Our fitment chart includes a wide range of motorcycles, but it’s best to check with Parts Unlimited’s sales reps to assure you order the proper ones for each bike,” Olin notes. All Rox Speed’s riser products are made at the company’s shop in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. The risers are of durable 6061-T6d billet aluminum, and feature anodized finishes in Natural Clear, Gun Metal Gray, Black or Orange. ■

DRIVETRAIN KITS
Drivetrain Upgrades
Model-Specific Chain and Sprocket Kits
T
he drivetrain on an ATV has a rough life. Today’s quads are heavy, crank out tons of power, and have a lot more traction than two wheelers, all of which puts tremendous stress on the chain and sprockets. Plus, they’re often run in sandy, dusty, or muddy conditions. Yikes. When it comes time to replace an ATV’s drivetrain, Regina makes it easy by offering model-specific chain and sprocket kits. No need to count links and cut a chain to length or order individual sprockets – one part number includes everything needed to fully overhaul the drivetrain. Regina’s Quad chain and sprocket kits were developed specifically for the American market and cover 25 of the most popular models, from the little Polaris 250 Trail Boss on up to the ferocious Yamaha Raptor 700R. Each kit includes durable steel sprockets with the stock tooth count while the cut-to-length sealed chain features shot-peened components for maximum fatigue resistance, while thick side plates provide increased tensile strength. High-carbon steel pins and rollers are

specifically designed to withstand the severe shock loading that quads can dish out. Regina’s patented Z44 seals keep lubricating grease inside the chain and dirt and grime out, ensuring smooth performance and a long service life no matter what conditions the ATV is used in. Regina has been in the chain business for 100 years and has 345 world championships to its credit thanks to longstanding partnerships with many of the world’s foremost manufacturers. All of that experience and expertise goes into all of Regina’s chains, all of which are 100 percent made in Italy. ■

Better Brakes for ATVs and Side-by-Sides
A
TVs and side-by-sides are a big part of the powersport world, and those machines have progressively gotten larger, faster and more powerful.
None of that’s gone unnoticed by DP Brakes, the company that introduced sintered-metallic brakes to the powersport market. They quickly realized that these heavyweight ATVs and side-by-sides could all benefit from a braking upgrade, and an expanded lineup of new DP brake pads is the result. No surprise to anyone familiar with DP, for work, play or racing, these four-wheeler pads have become just as popular as the machines themselves. With DP brake pads in the calipers, ATVs and side-by-sides can slow down and stop more quickly than ever, and with more control. That high-level performance will be there for two to three times the service life of the OE brake pads they replace, too, and the DP difference doesn’t end there. All that strong, long-lasting performance is also easy on the rotors. Thanks to ceramic heat shields permanently bonded onto the baking plates, DP brake pads are
