here’s great excitement throughout the Parts Unlimited world with the crowning of Dylan Ferrandis as the AMA 450 Motocross Champion of 2021. That is the biggest prize of them all in American motocross and we are very proud that Dylan could achieve it in THOR gear. Pretty cool that Torsten Hallman himself was here in the United States in the 1960s, winning races and introducing American’s motocross riders to riding gear designed specifically for their use. Now over 50 years later, THOR is still leading the way. There were other riders in THOR and Moose Racing gear in motocross this year. Check out our report on the 2021 season beginning on page 20. This issue also features products and stories about many forms of riding, some petrol-powered, some pedal-powered and some with pedal assistance. The snow will be falling soon in some parts of the country, so the snowmobilers will be hoping for some great riding days ahead. Like many aspects of the sport, the Covid pandemic made a lot of people anxious to get out of the house and to get active again. Preseason sales were up and all indications are that the trails in snow country will be getting busy soon. Other areas of the country will stay dry and sunny a while longer and your customers will be enjoying their Tazer MX e-MTBs out on the trails. We have a number of new E-bike products featured, and we also have included a report on an update we just made to our Parts Magazine Project Bike – an installation of larger diameter Galfer brake rotors. And at the bottom end of the scale are the riders of tomorrow, just starting out on pedal bikes. This is a fun story about Rapid City, South Dakota dealer Wade Rice of Rice’s Rapid Motorsports and their program to get young kids hooked on wheel sports, in conjunction with All Kids Bike and the Strider Education Foundation. That story starts on page 26. Also check out our reports on E-bike products starting on page 24 and snowmobiles starting on page 46. ■

NEWS EVENTS Ground and Pound THOR AND MOOSE RACING RIDERS WAGE BATTLE, WIN CHAMPIONSHIPS poised to take the championship down to the very end at the Ironman in Indiana on October 24. Kelley’s THOR/FMF KTM teammate Josh Toth is faring well in the National Enduro Series, where he has shown flashes of brilliance with a pair of wins. But it is once again Baylor and Kelley who are at the top of the points in that series, as well. After six rounds, Baylor holds a sizeable advantage over Kelley, and the Moose Racing athlete is looking to bring home his fifth career National Enduro Championship.

he American off-road racing scene has roared back to life, with championships such as the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series and National Enduro returning from the summer break, as well as the AMA EnduroCross Series kicking off. THOR and Moose Racing riders continue to top the championship standings and the podium in these championships and more as the 2021 season heads into its final months. In the GNCC Series, the battle rages on between THORbacked FMF KTM Factory Racing Team’s Ben Kelley and AmPro Yamaha’s Moose Racing-rider Steward Baylor. After 10 rounds, at press time the two are only four points apart, Kelley demonstrating a champion’s consistency with two wins and a solid string of podiums while Baylor impresses with his roaring comeback following a rough first two rounds of the season. Baylor has been on the podium at every round since, racking up six wins in the process, but still not having taken the points lead from Kelley. The duo seems

In the premiere ranks of U.S. Sprint Enduro, it was Moose Racing’s Layne Michael of the AmPro Yamaha team who claimed the title. Michael wrapped up the championship with one round to spare, but still helped himself to another dominant win in the final. In the wild West, FMF KTM Factory Racing Team riders Taylor Robert and Dante Oliveira are making the THOR family proud as they battle for dominance in the World Off Road Championship Series (WORCS). The teammates seem to be matching each other win for win, trading the red plate back and forth throughout the season thus far. Robert currently holds the advantage by a scant two points, but with plenty more points still left on the table, the championship is still wide open. Look for the sparks to fly at the season final in Primm, Nevada on November 21. Oliveira is pulling double duty in the National Grand Prix Championship (NGPC) Series where he is a force to be reckoned with. Hart battled tooth and nail with hard-enduro ace Cody Webb throughout the AMA Extreme Championship, but Hart managed to come away with the 2021 tittle, the first for the young Canadian. Hart now turns his focus to the AMA EnduroCross Championship. The fastest women off-roaders in the country are pressing on in multiple championships, as well. Moose Racing riders Rachael Archer of the AmPro Yamaha team and Husqvarna’s Tayla Jones remain at the forefront of the GNCC WXC ranks. For Jones, the three-time GNCC WMX Champion added a U.S. Sprint Enduro Championship to her collection this year, capturing the 2021 national championship. Out West, Moose Racing/Beta rider Morgan Tanke Colón is blazing through the desert in the National Hare and Hound Championship, having claimed the first win of the season. While she remains in the top three in the NHHA Pro Women ranks, she is also turning her attention indoors to the EnduroCross Series, undoubtedly her specialty. Coming off a win at the 2020 season finale, Tanke Colón was looking to carry her momentum into 2021. As anything can, and does, happen in EnduroCross, look for Tanke Colón to nab some wins in the coming weeks. ■

NEWS EVENTS Battle for the AFT Throne DEFENDING CHAMPIONS BAUMAN AND MEES VIE FOR THE CHAMPIONSHIP

ifteen rounds in to the 16-round Progressive American Flat Track Series and the countdown to the championship between Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties Indian teammates Briar Bauman and Jared Mees is at full tilt as of press time. Defending champion Bauman has done well to keep himself consistently in the hunt to defend his #1 plate, but never one to be counted out, Mees has come roaring back in the second half of the championship. With one round remaining and only four points separating the dueling champions, it’s anyone’s game at the Charlotte Half Mile on October 8. Backing up to the halfway point of the series, it would have been a stretch to predict that Mees, then sitting third in the championship, more than 30 points down from leader Bauman after the Port Royal Half Mile, would regain a foothold in the title fight. It might have been a safer bet that Bauman would successfully defend his title before the end of the season. But the second half of the series had an

advantage in store for Mees – a string of Mile races. It was prime time for Mile-master Mees to strike. The Springfield Mile doubleheader, followed by dual rounds at the Sacramento Mile, all saw Mees drop the hammer on the field for a four-round win streak. While Bauman maintained his podium consistency with a runner-up finish and a trio of third-place finishes, he also watched as his points advantage over his teammate unraveled, even if by fractions of a second. Mees bested Bauman at the Springfield Mile I race by a mere 0.116 seconds, and the next night in Springfield, Mees put an exclamation point on his victory by winning by a large margin. Sacramento was another pair of slam dunks for Mees, and also saw him not only close the gap to Bauman, but gain the points lead. Mees held a four-point advantage over Bauman as they headed into the final at Charlotte Motor Speedway, a fourpoint gap that effectively made the finale a winner-take-all for the 2021 American Flat Track Championship.

TEXTER CROWNED IN PRODUCTION TWINS With two rounds remaining in the 2021 season, G&G Racing’s Cory Texter clinched the AFT Production Twins title, riding his Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialtiesbacked Yamaha to the win and the championship at the Sacramento Mile I. “Years of failure, being overlooked, sitting on the sidelines without a bike to ride, driving across the country, sleeping in a van watching main events I didn’t qualify for,” Texter said, reflecting on his journeyman career path. “Every rider has a different path with different obstacles along the way. I’ve always paved my own way and I’m proud of that. Big love to all who have supported me!” The title didn’t take one ounce of fight from Texter, either. He battled all the way to the flag the following night at the Sacramento Mile II, capturing the win a scant 0.015 seconds ahead of Chad Cose. He pushed so hard that he slammed himself into the air fence after the finish line, fortunately without injury. ■

arts Magazine would like to congratulate THOR/Star Racing Yamaha rider Dylan Ferrandis on winning the 2021 450cc National Motocross Championship! It is an incredible accomplishment, made even most astounding because 2021 is Ferrandis’ first year in the premier 450cc class. He also clinched the title a round early, and still won the overall and final moto of the season a week later.
Ferrandis always has a plan and has one of the hardest work ethics in the sport. His plan was to make his rookie season on a 450 to be a learning year, but he surprised everyone (including himself ) by winning early and often.
THOR/Star Racing Yamaha’s Dylan Ferrandis landed his 450cc National Motocross Championship title at the season’s penultimate round at Fox Raceway in Pala, California.

“Winning the 450 Motocross National Championship in the first season on a 450 was definitely not on the long-term plan,” Ferrandis said. “It was and is a big surprise! But I guess we did the perfect amount of work to claim the title.”

THOR/Star Racing Yamaha's Dylan Ferrandis capped off his championship season with an overall win in the finale at Hangtown.
“I don’t know if I’m the hardest worker, but what is sure is that I dedicate my life to my sport for my best possible outcome.” — Dylan Ferrandis 2021 450cc National Motocross Champion Ferrandis won the title in dominating fashion, taking six overall victories out of the 12 events and earning podiums in the other six events. He won whether he got a good start or not, coming from the back of the pack and first turn pileups to finish on the podium more than once. Ferrandis scored his maiden 450 Pro Motocross win back at the opening round in May at Fox Raceway in California, which came as a surprise, even to him. “I didn’t wake up this morning thinking that I would win the overall,” Ferrandis said. “It’s an amazing result as a rookie in the 450 class to win the first moto and the overall.”
He then went on pick off overall victories at High Point, RedBud, Southwick, Budds Creek, and the finale at Hangtown. “This year I was just at the top for myself physically and mentally. It’s just hard work. I do everything to be better, day after day, Sunday, Monday, every day,” Ferrandis said. “I do that for so many years. I don’t know if I’m the hardest worker, but what is sure is that I dedicate my life to my sport for my best possible outcome. Training and racing is fun for me, so I don’t really have any other hobbies. Once in a while when I’m in California I might go surfing, or snowboarding in the winter, but it doesn’t happen a lot.”

Already dominating his first season in the 450cc premier class, THOR/Yamaha's Dylan Ferrandis earned his fifth win of the summer at the Budds Creek National.
NO STRANGER TO THE PODIUM
Ferrandis is not new to the top of the podium – in 2020 he won the 250cc National Motocross Championship and is a two-time Monster Energy AMA Supercross 250 West Champion (2020, 2019). He now boasts six career AMA Pro Motocross Championship 450 wins, nine career AMA Pro Motocross Championship 250 wins, was named 2017 AMA 250SX Rookie of the Year and 2021 AMA 450 Supercross Rookie of the Year. Ferrandis gives credit to his support group for his success as well as to his team, Star Racing Yamaha, who took over Yamaha’s factory 450cc program this season. The team has a similar work ethic as Ferrandis, with everyone from the top down putting in the work and effort to win races and championships.

And, of course, all my sponsors like Parts Unlimited and THOR.” THOR Motocross Pro Rider Support Manager Andy Gustafson has worked with and watched Ferrandis for several seasons. “It was amazing to see Dylan win the 450 title in his rookie year,” Gustafson noted. “He was impressive from the first moto. He was confident at the start of the season and got stronger and more confident as the season went on. It was so much fun to watch and to see his mental aspect as he raced. He was cool and calm week in and week out and handled the pressure of being a rookie on a new team.”

Gustafson says that Ferrandis never panicked or gave up, instead he would stay focused under pressure, paying attention to technique and riding smart whether it was to victory or a podium finish. “I watched as his fan base grew this season, more and more people are rooting for Dylan after seeing him get up and come from behind,” Gustafson added. “He’s willing and ready to take risks that a lot of riders aren’t. He’s just intelligently focused on his goals. The fans can see that and they respect him now.”
So, what is next for Ferrandis? Is he going to take a couple of weeks off and celebrate his new 450 Motocross National championship? Nope, he’s going to get to work on his next goal, the 450cc Supercross Championship. “Now, for sure, my eyes are set on the next goal, and that is to be the Supercross Champ,” Ferrandis said. “We have a long winter ahead of us to work towards that goal in 2022.” ■

Introducing the All Kids Bike Program
Created by All Kids Bike and the Strider Education Foundation, the Learn-to-Ride Program is aimed at teaching kindergarten-age children the joy of riding on two wheels. The program supplies Strider Balance Bikes and a proven curriculum to help create the next generation of riders.

otorcycle dealerships across the country are investing in their communities and their own future business by partnering with the Learn-to-Ride Program, created by All Kids Bike and the Strider Education Foundation. The program supplies Kindergarten PE classes with a fleet of Strider 14X Balance Bikes, helmets and a proven learn-to-ride curriculum that gives children the chance to experience the joy of two wheels. Wade Rice, owner of Rice’s Rapid Motorsports in Rapid City, South Dakota, understood the value and importance of the program as soon as he heard about it. “We used to be a Schwinn bicycle dealer when I was a kid, so I’ve had bicycles since day one,” Rice said. His dealership partnered with a local Honda Riders Club to sponsor two schools on the Ellsworth Air Force Base. “A bicycle is a starter, and having that opportunity at a young age is great for motorcycle dealerships in the future,” he said. “It comes around full circle – once kids get a taste of it, they’ll keep going.” For a donation of $5,000, All Kids Bike provides schools with an integrative curriculum, staff training and certification, fully adjustable helmets and a fleet of Strider’s child-friendly 14X Bikes, which easily convert from balance bikes to pedal bikes as the kids’ skills progress. The program also offers schools support for a period of five years, during which hundreds of kids can be taught to ride. It’s an investment with an incredible return.

Her district was the recipient of 375 bikes donated by Black Hills Harley-Davidson. BALANCE BIKES
Start ‘em Young
Giving Kids the Holeshot Since 2007
Strider 12 Classic
Strider 12 Sport
B
efore you can run, you must walk. And before you can ride a motorcycle, it’s a good idea to know how to ride a bicycle. The balance and coordination that a bike teaches are the bedrock skills youngsters need to operate a motorized two-wheeler. Since 2007, Strider balance bikes have served as the first brick of that solid foundation. Now, Parts Unlimited is proud to offer you and your customers three great options for introducing children to two wheels: The Strider 12 Sport, Strider 12 Classic, and the Sport 14X. STRIDER 12 SPORT AND CLASSIC
Strider’s original balance bike is suitable for kids as young as 18 months, which means they can be gliding, smiling, and building their two-wheeled skills before they’re even out of diapers. The reason the Strider works is that it’s tyke sized, with a low seat, narrow bars, small grips, a light weight of just over 6 pounds, and perhaps most importantly, no pedals. Kids propel their Striders the same way the Flintstones powered their car – with their feet. Leg swinging is a natural motion for young children, so it’s one less hurdle to overcome en route to balancing and steering. The Strider 12 Sport has an adjustable, padded seat that ranges from 11 inches to 19 inches high for inseams from 12 inches to 20 inches. Similarly, the handlebar has a

quick-release clamp and slides through 4 inches of adjustment, so the Strider 12 Sport can grow with a child. A steel frame, maintenance-free cartridge wheel bearings, and flatfree foam tires make the Strider 12 Sport especially durable. With a weight limit of 60 pounds, Strider’s 12 Sport is ideal for kids aged 18 months to 5 years and is available in blue, green, pink, red, orange, and yellow. Its msrp is $119.99. For a slightly lower price ($99.99) and an even lower seat height (just 11 inches), Strider’s 12 Classic is a good choice. It’s a simpler bike, with a standard plastic seat, standard handlebar with no bar pad, and a few other simplifications. The 12 Classic is an unembellished choice for those who seek an entry-level option. STRIDER 14X SPORT
For bigger kids who are poised to make the shift from a balance bike to pedaling like a pro, there’s the Strider 14X Sport. This bike is built for progress with larger 14-inch spoke wheels and tube tires, as well as slightly larger chassis with adjustable seat post and stem that make it suitable for children 3 to 7 years old. It has an msrp of $169.99. The best part about the 14X Sport is how readily it converts to a pedal bike. The Easy-Ride Pedal Conversion Kit (sold separately) affixes to the 14X Sport with just one bolt and easily makes this Strider a proper pedal bike complete with coaster brake.

HEAD GEAR
Teach ‘em young: Wear a helmet! Strider has things covered with child-sized head gear including the Splash helmet and the 2-in-1 ST-R Full Face helmet. The Strider Splash helmet is a classic bicycle helmet just like mom and dad have, but in mini. It’s loaded with features like a dial system for easy size adjustment, a no-pinch buckle, and padded chin strap. This CPSC Safety Rated helmet is offered in a cool black-and-white splash graphic in Small (48-54 cm head circumference) and Medium (for 54-59 cm heads). Hard-charging youth should be outfitted with the ST-R helmet, which features a chin bar for added protection. It also has a motocross-style visor, giving it a proper motorcycle look. For more relaxed rides, the ST-R’s padded chin bar pops off with just the push of a button. It’s the best of both worlds, all while weighing in at less than a pound and offering excellent comfort and adjustment features like the Splash. Offered in Small (for heads measuring 48cm-52cm) and Medium (for heads measuring 52cm58cm), the ST-R Full Face comes in red, white, or blue.

AWESOME ACCESSORIES
If your customers’ kids are crawling, then they’re ready for the Strider Rocking Base. Affixed to any Strider 12 balance bike, the Rocking Base allows kids as young as 6 months to play on and rock out on a Strider. That not only makes them giggle with glee, it also familiarizes them with the bike while developing their balance, spatial awareness and core strength. We all know the doldrums of winter, when getting out for a ride is all but impossible. With a set of Strider Snow Skis strapped to either a Strider 12 Sport, Classic or 14X Sport, your clients will have a proper powder pony. Even with the Strider Snow Skis, children still learn the essentials of balance and leaning into turns.

Whether you’re hoping your kiddo will be the next Marc Márquez or Dylan Ferrandis, or just want them to have fun while building their self-confidence and coordination, a Strider balance bike is the way to go. ■

E-BIKE BRAKE PRODUCTS
Power Boost
Upgraded Brakes for E-bikes efficiently and have excellent heat management. Galfer’s E-bike G1652 compound brake pads are engineered with these differences in mind, and they are designed to offer durability and excellent modulation. With Galfer E-bike brake pads, riders get a more aggressive pad than stock without compromising longevity.
Galfer’s 203mm and 223 oversized WAVE rotors are a great upgrade to the braking performance for E-bikes and aggressive mountain bike riders.
Racers and aggressive riders are typically more interested in a strong bite than a long-wearing pad. For those riders, Galfer recommends the Pro mountain bike G1554 compound brake pads. The compound is designed for that competitive riding style, so the pads have a strong initial bite that allows for hard stopping. In addition to being strong enough for hard riding, the Pro pads are also tough enough for the riding conditions. They perform well in mud, rain and extreme terrain. The pads are ideal for downhill riding, where brakes are subjected to maximum temperature levels. Most eMTBs have six-bolt rotors, though occasionally a centerlock mounting style will pop up. And that’s it – those are the only two styles on the market, making replacing E-bike brake rotors extremely easy. In addition to its rotors, Galfer also produces an adaptor that allows six-bolt rotors to be mounted on a centerlock hub.
E-bikes might give riders a boost in the power department, but they also require better brakes than a standard bicycle. Galfer has brake pads and rotors that are a great upgrade over stock.
E
-bikes might give riders a boost in the power department, but they also require better brakes than a standard bicycle. Luckily, upgrading the rotors and pads on an E-bike is even easier than swapping out brake components on a motorcycle. Galfer has applied the same engineering to its E-bike brake rotors and pads as it has to its motorcycle products, meaning E-bike riders can stop with confidence. Choosing the right E-bike brake pad begins with identifying the make and model of the brake set on the bike. From there, it’s just a matter of choosing the right compound. E-bikes are heavier and faster than a regular bicycle, which means the brakes have to be able to stop the larger mass

As with motorcycle brake rotors, switching out a stock E-bike rotor for an aftermarket rotor of the same size is a cinch. When it comes to mounting a larger rotor, an adapter is a quick way to make the upgrade. Galfer produces a 203mm WAVE rotor that is 2mm thick rather than the typical 1.8mm stock rotor. This added thickness is perfect for E-bike and aggressive mountain bike riding. The WAVE pattern keeps braking systems cooler by allowing air to pass over every point of the brake pad surface. Galfer also has a 223mm oversized WAVE rotor that maintains the six-bolt mounting pattern to make the rotor swap simple. Since E-bikes, particularly eMTBs used for downhill racing, tend to rely on the front brakes more than the rear brakes, Galfer recommends upgrading with a combination of the two rotors, mounting a 223mm WAVE rotor on the front and a 203mm WAVE rotor on the rear. ■

BIKE UPDATE
PARTS MAGAZINE PROJECT BIKE UPDATE GALFER BIG BRAKE BUILD Photo by Jen Rose
B
As the old saying goes, “What goes up, must come down.” In our area here in Southern California we have a lot of hills, which means there are a fair number of downhill situations where good stopping power is a must. We decided to upgrade our Parts Magazine Tazer MX with Galfer Wave Rotors—223 mm on the front and 203mm on the back. The switch to the Galfer parts was pretty simple. In the front we went from a stock 203mm disc to a 223mm disc. For this to work, the front caliper had to move out a little bit, so we used the Galfer Bracket Adapter, which bolted up very easily between the fork and the caliper. The rear was a simple same-size parts swap out – 203mm to 203mm. ■

E-BIKE TIRES
Turning on the Power Tires for E-Mountain Bikes
The Michelin E-Wild tires are built for the specific demands of traditional and electric mountain bikes. The proprietary E-Bike Design helps save the battery, reduce rolling resistance and provide smooth transitions between climbs.
The Michelin Wild Enduro tire features Michelin’s GUMX3D compound, which provides super tacky grip for uncompromised traction and performance.
B
uilding an electric mountain bike takes a lot more than bolting on a battery. With the increased weight and power, a lot of other parts on the bike have to change, too, and that includes the tires. Michelin is at the forefront of the eMTB craze with tires that stand up to the demands of electric and traditional mountain bikes alike. Designed to increase battery life, tire longevity and power transmission, the Michelin E-Wild tires are ideal for an e-mountain bike. The tires feature large cornering tread blocks for responsive handling, similar to the Michelin Wild Enduro product line. In addition to preserving battery life, the E-Wild tires also reduce rolling resistance and provide smooth transitions between climbs. As one would expect, Michelin put a lot of high-tech materials and cutting-edge technology into its eMTB tires. Designed specifically for electric bicycles, Michelin’s E-Gum-X Compound blends lateral and central rubber, providing better grip and responsive handling to reduce battery usage. Meanwhile, the Michelin Gravity Shield technology features a high-density belt positioned under the tread area to reduce punctures. The company’s E-Wild front tires have a casing that matches Michelin’s Enduro line of tires and is designed to enhance durability and grip. The rear tire’s casing was modeled after downhill racing prototypes to provide

greater resilience and maximum strength with the ability to run at low pressures. While the E-Wild tires were built specifically for eMTB, the company also has tires that work well with both traditional mountain bikes and e-mountain bikes. Designated as e-Bike Ready, this lineup includes the Michelin Wild Enduro tire, the Michelin Wild AM2 tire and the Michelin Force AM2 tire. It’s easy to see that the Wild Enduro tires are part of the same family tree as the E-Wild tires. They both feature Gravity Shield technology, and the Wild Enduro has its own style of sticking to the terrain with Michelin’s GUM-X3D compound. This proprietary blend provides an extremely tacky grip for outstanding traction and performance. The Wild AM2 tire and the Force AM2 tire represent the newest generation of all-mountain tires. These innovative tires are designed to increase both speed and longevity, even on the most aggressive mountain bike trails. Both designs feature Gravity Shield technology, optimized Gum-X compounds for better grip and a tread pattern designed for efficient braking. The rubber compounds have been proven by top Enduro racers, and the flexible shoulder rubber increases cornering grip. The Wild AM2 tire is designed for riding in mixed to soft terrain. The aggressive tread pattern and tall center blocks increase grip and stability, even when braking on softer surfaces. Meanwhile, the Force AM2 tire is a fast-rolling tire optimized for hard-pack and mixed terrain. The directional tread pattern provides excellent rolling efficiency and offers high grip during braking and cornering. ■

TRAINING WHEELS
Balancing Act
Training Wheels for Young Riders The Moose Racing training wheels fit the Stacyc 12e and 16e balance bikes, the ideal sizes for new, young riders. The wheel height and mounting position can be adjusted, which allows the training wheels to adapt to the riding terrain as well as the rider’s skill level. As the rider gets better, the training wheels can be raised incrementally until they aren’t needed at all. To make the transition to a motorcycle even easier, the training wheels will fit a 50cc bike, too, so they can be used again when it’s time for the rider to take the next step.
Moose Racing’s training wheels for Stacyc electric balance bikes are designed to help young riders learn balance and control as they master their two-wheeled skills.

e all had to start somewhere. Some kids are lucky enough to start learning how to ride at a young age. For some of us, that meant an adult plopped us onto a dirtbike, showed us the basics, then crossed their fingers as we tried to make it all work without falling over. Luckily, kids these days have a much better way of learning. By starting with a Stacyc electric balance bike, kids can start with the very basic task of simply staying upright while the bike is in non-powered mode. From there, the electric motor can be switched on for a new level of skill building. And through it all, Moose Racing training wheels and foot pegs can help make the learning process a lot less bumpy.

Moose Racing training wheels mount easily to the Stacyc bikes with an included billet aluminum adaptor plate. Sturdy wheels and tires, solid steel axles and a powdercoated finish give the training wheels the durability they will need to stand up to new – and probably fearless – riders. Moose Racing also has a set that includes training wheels and a safety flag. In addition to the training wheels for the Stacyc electric balance bikes, the package comes with a safety orange reflective flag. It mounts to a 66-inch flag whip that makes sure everyone will see even the smallest riders. Instead of expecting a rider to jump right from a balance bike to a motorcycle, Moose Racing foot pegs for Stacyc bikes will help kids get used to putting their feet up. The pegs replace the stock floorboard on the Stacyc electric bikes, and of course they are perfectly sized for little feet. The CNC-machined billet aircraft aluminum has grooves that are gentle on shoes, but tough against wet or muddy conditions. Installation is as easy as removing two screws. ■

TIRES
Rugged and Nimble
A Lighter, More Affordable UTV Tire
Whether your customers are headed to the woods, the OHV park or just taking care of business on the farm, the M2 Evil is ready to roll in a variety of conditions.
The M2 Evil is the follow-up to AMS Tires’ popular M1 Evil. The updated tire is lighter and more affordable than its predecessor and features a new rubber compound and upgraded tread depth.
I
mproving on a popular product is no easy task, but that’s exactly what AMS did with the M2 Evil UTV tire. Building on the legend that is the M1 Evil, the M2 Evil is a follow-up model that retains all the great features of the original while decreasing the tire’s weight and price. That’s a combination you and your customers can definitely be excited about. What did UTV and ATV drivers love about the original M1 Evil? It’s unidirectional truck-like tread and excellent handling on a variety of terrain, its rugged and durable radial design, a next-level smooth ride on hardpack surfaces, and the fact that it meets DOT standards for limited on-road use. In a sense, the M1 is an ultimate doit-all tire, and that versatility has made it a top seller. Enter the lighter and more affordable M2 Evil. Thanks to a new rubber compound and a tweak to the tread depth, the M2 Evil is now 10 percent lighter on average for all sizes. Reducing rotating weight improves all aspects of a vehicle’s performance. From acceleration and braking to suspension compliance, less mass at the ends of the axles makes for a more nimble machine. The fact that the M2 Evil is also more affordable is just the cherry on top.

As with the original M1, the M2 Evil is built on a totally modern radial chassis that balances flexibility and compliance with high-speed stability. With either a 6-ply or 8-ply carcass design (depending on the size), the M2 Evil has the strength to support today’s heavier, high-power vehicles, with a tough sidewall design that’s ready to take abuse. The M1 Evil’s iconic non-directional tread design is retained on the M2 Evil. Its overlapping tread-block design and even land/sea ratio offer great grip and excellent handling on everything from hardpack roads to loose and muddy trails. With more natural rubber in the tread compound the M2 Evil is more durable, which allowed AMS to reduce the tread depth and save weight. While the M1 Evil featured a tread depth of 1 inch, the M2 Evil features a 5/8-inch tread depth for the 25-inch M2 Evils and ¾-inch depth for the 26-inch through 34-inch versions. Whether your customers are headed to the woods, the OHV park, or just taking care of business on the farm, the M2 Evil is an excellent option that’s available to fit nearly every popular wheel size. ■

Oils for Snowmobiles and Snowbikes
LIQUI MOLY offers three oil choices designed specifically for snowmobiles and snowbikes, with options for 2-stroke and 4-stroke motors.
S
ome powersports enthusiasts prefer warm weather and dry roads, but there are plenty who look forward to winter every year, hoping for an early snowfall so they can break out their snowmobile or snowbike. Specialty vehicles, especially ones that can withstand such low temperatures, need specialty oil, and LIQUI MOLY delivers with three oil choices for snow sports enthusiasts. The LIQUI MOLY Snowmobile Motor Oil 0W-40 is a fully-synthetic motor oil developed, as the name says, especially for snowmobiles. The low-friction oil is designed with 4-stroke engines in mind, providing an optimal level of lubrication from the moment the engine starts. By having a low viscosity of zero, the oil ensures that the engine will properly start and stay lubricated even in very low temperatures.
4-stroke counterpart, the two-stroke oil is designed to provide thorough lubrication even when the temperatures dip to extremely cold levels. The Snowmobile Motor Oil 2T Pro Race is suitable for both mixed and separated lubrication in air-cooled and water-cooled engines. LIQUI MOLY also formulated a synthetic oil specifically for snowbikes. The Snowbike Motor Oil 0W-40 is a low-friction option that blends both synthetic base oils and advanced additives. That gives the oil high shear stability, which helps prevent deposits inside the engine and reduces frictional loss. In addition to its ability to lubricate the engine, the Snowmobile Motor Oil also offers excellent wear protection, high temperature stability and cleaning properties throughout the life cycle of the oil. That way, snowmobile riders can hit the trails with confidence that their engine will perform well on every ride. The extremely low evaporation loss is another benefit.

HELMETS
Carving Up the Streets
A Halloween Tradition in Helmet Form
Just in time for Halloween, Icon’s new Trick-or-Street graphic is the perfect complement to Icon’s Airform helmet.
H
istory tells us that the original jack-o’-lanterns were designed to ward off evil spirits. Like gargoyles adorning old cathedrals, the idea is that it takes something scary to keep away something even scarier. Icon has been known to dabble in the diabolical from time to time – just take a look at some of their previous helmet graphics for proof – so it’s fitting that the antidote to the skulls and monsters of old is a fierce jack-o’-lantern on the Airform helmet. The Trick-or-Street graphic debuting this fall is an updated version of a design that first appeared on an Icon Airmada helmet in October of 2016. Five years later, the graphic was ready for a fresh look on a fresh lid. Not only is this iteration of the jack-o’-lantern more aggressive, but it also features glow-in-the-dark paint for an extra dose of spooky during nighttime rides. Tanner Goldbeck is the artist responsible for the Trickor-Street graphic. Tanner has been a partner of Icon’s since the earliest days of the brand. In fact, Tanner was responsible for some of those sinister-looking designs mentioned previously, like 2004’s Skull graphic on the Mainframe helmet. We would love to mention all of the Icon helmet graphics that Tanner has designed, but with more than 50 to his name, there’s simply no room. As for the helmet that the Trick-or-Street graphic graces, the Icon Airform is a premium street helmet derived from the technology used in the Airframe Pro and Airflite helmets. The shape of the shell is visual proof of the Airform’s relationship to those race-oriented helmets: the sleek profile is designed for speed, and the contoured neckline makes getting the helmet off and on quick and easy.
changed for a different look, with multiple color options available separately. The Dayglo Green, of course, would be a great complement to the green fire burning inside the pumpkin. Another way to change up the look of this helmet is by swapping out the included face shields. The Trick-orStreet comes with both a clear and Dark Smoke Optics Shield and a Dark Smoke DropShield, but what’s the point of Halloween if you can’t get dressed up? Icon offers both shields separately in various colors and finishes. Flames might be pouring out of the pumpkin in the graphic, but the Airform is designed to keep riders’ heads cool. Four intake vents and one exhaust vent keep air flowing, and the HydraDry moisture-wicking liner makes sure things stay dry. ■

Brick-and-Mortar Sales Opportunity offerings covering everything from off-road to V-Twin to street sport. Additional requirements simply include carrying a minimum of thirty Dunlop tires in stock, and with the increasing number of riders our industry is seeing, thirty tires will go quick.

n a time when many people lean toward online retail for daily items, scores of powersports enthusiasts still hold a high value to walking into their local powersports dealer for the parts and gear they need. From serious racers to weekend cruisers, riders enjoy the atmosphere and convenience of getting what they need the same day, especially when it comes to tires. With decades of experience designing and manufacturing tires in the USA and connecting directly with its customers, Dunlop has not only learned what riders need in tire performance, but they understand and value the key role each Dunlop brick-and-mortar dealer plays. Five years ago Dunlop launched its Pro Dealer program designed to support brick-and-mortar dealers across the United States, providing them additional benefits and tools to help drive their success. Parts Unlimited introduced many dealers to this program at its launch and continues to help support its great benefits today. The scales are certainly tipped in the direction of benefits with the Pro Dealer program, including promotions with Parts Unlimited, Dunlop Dollar rewards with the opportunity to earn $5 per tire set sold, free point-of-purchase materials for the showroom, access to Dunlop’s user-friendly website and app and even an official listing through the company’s dealer locator.
Something that’s most notable, however, are the exclusive rebates. They’re designed to include tires and service, this way parts and service departments can simultaneously benefit from having what in many cases is a $60 advantage over online retailers. With riding and racing experience nationwide, Dunlop understands that powersports dealers vary greatly in size and support needs based on their location and the markets they serve. As of the beginning of 2021, Dunlop introduced its Associate Dealer program designed on an entry-level scale to help dealers engage with Dunlop, familiarize with how their tires can help their customers and ultimately help drive some growth until they’re ready to step into the Pro Dealer program. Brick-and-mortar dealers that can mount tires can join the Associate Dealer program by simply purchasing at least six Dunlop tires at the time of signup. With that, benefits include the Dunlop dealer website and app access, pointof-purchase materials and even the same $5 per tire set sold with the Dunlop Dollar rewards program. ■

SNOWMOBILE MARKET REPORT
SNOWMOBILE MARKET REPORT

ost outdoors pastimes received a major boost from the world wide Covid-19 pandemic, and snowmobiling is no exception. Indeed, the need for healthy outdoor recreation with social distancing breathed new life into snow riding during the 2020-2021 season. Nothing illustrates this further than North American snowmobile sales last season, which were up 16 percent over the 2019-2020 season in the United States, and also up 16 percent over the prior year in Canada. The Canadian increase represents the greatest annual percentage growth in the land of the Maple Leaf since the heady days of the early 1970s. And, with more than 109,000 new snowmobiles retailed in North America last winter, carry-over of used sleds and unsold new sleds is at an all-time low according to statistics released by the International Snowmobile Manufacturers Association (ISMA).
★
NOVEMBER 2021
With last season’s increase of about 120,000 snowmobiles in use in the U.S. and Canada combined, there are now more than 1.9 million registered snow sleds, a number that continues to steadily grow each year. Miles ridden by snowmobilers continue strong, too. ISMA says that the average snowmobiler reported riding their primary sled a total of 1,555 miles last winter. Economic activity generated by this activity totals in excess of $38 billion, another number that continues a steady upward trend.
THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE NUMBERS The macro numbers are impressive, but it’s the people who are behind the numbers that really matter to snowmobile and sled aftermarket dealers. “There are three types of snowmobilers,” says John T. Prusak, publisher and editor of Snow Goer magazine, the oldest and largest consumer publication in the sport.
• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
SLED SEGMENT UP SHARPLY “The Super Enthusiasts are the folks who spring-order sleds, chase snow in bad winters, and truly plan much of their winter around the sport of snowmobiling. The Returning Regulars fall on a continuum of buy-in to the sport that is somewhere below the Super Enthusiasts. And then there are the Newcomers.” Each of these groups presents specific opportunities for dealer sales. The Super Enthusiasts want to be ready to ride before the snow flies. And they want their sleds prepared in advance for those longer trips to high snow areas. They are the ones who bring their sleds in early for service, who are constantly looking for upgrades to their equipment and apparel, and who are prime candidates for high-end products. Dealers may find it profitable to go beyond normal marketing activities to gain and retain more of this type of potentially very profitable customer. The Returning Regulars range from those near the Super Enthusiast level to individual who, as Prusak explains, “We need to make sure don’t wander out of the sport.” As such, this group offers some of the best opportunities to upgrade anything and everything they need for snow riding, but they often need introductions to those upgrades because they may not even be aware that the upgrades even exist. Dealers should expand and sharpen their communications to this group to expand sales to them. Specific product strategies could include timely helmet and eye protection replacement, navigation equipment for the directionallychallenged, and routine maintenance requirements like clutch service and hyfax replacement. Marketing objectives could be moving the top layer of this group into the Super Enthusiast category, and moving the lowest layer of this group onto more solid footing in the sport. “Newcomers is a group that grew a lot in the past year,” Prusak says. “Making sure that those people have the right riding gear, the knowledge, the understanding of where to find trails and trail heads, and so on, is absolutely key.” Dealers should spend extra time and effort with these newcomers to insure that they have what they need to enjoy being outdoors in sometimes- difficult winter conditions, and turn them into regular customers.
Key opportunities include upselling from a first snowmobile that was probably a used machine to a brand new sled with matching accessories and gear. Other opportunities include adding comfort and convenience items like more protective windshields and mirrors, selling consumables like oil and carbides in larger quantities, and moving customers into newer and better trailers.
THE OUTLOOK FOR 2022 Estimate point out that spring 2021 orders for model year 2022 snowmobiles were up substantially. This presents expanded opportunities for sales of all kinds of machine upgrades and accessories, apparel and helmets to match the new sleds, and trailering equipment. Snowmobilers are really excited again, as shown by the large and enthusiastic turn out at the Sno Baron Hay Days in September – the 54th anniversary of the two-day affair dubbed “The Official Star of Winter” – as well as the successful return of numerous other major events including shows and races, and even some new events in some areas. Dealers should consider seizing the very attractive 2022 season opportunity by being well stocked, merchandising products well in their showrooms, and taking the initiative to communicate with customers and prospects. Winter is coming and people are eager to get out in the snow again. ■

ome motorcycle apparel is made to last. The Moose Racing M1 series of pants and jerseys fall into that category, which is why they have become a popular choice for off-road riders, season after season. Carefully engineered and tested by Moose Racing’s pro riders, the M1 line is designed to blend comfort, style and durability, all without a high price tag. Although the characteristics that make the M1 such a popular apparel line are still there, Moose Racing has updated the look of the pants and jerseys for the coming riding season. For the 2022 M1 Series, there are six new jersey colorways and three new color options for the pants. The colors for the pants were carefully selected to allow riders to mix and match them with the jerseys, so there are plenty of options to choose from. Since the M1 apparel features sublimated graphics, the colors stay bold, wash after wash. One of the things that makes the M1 series so popular is its durability. Riders get style paired with materials and
construction that are ready for hard riding, making the M1 a great option for everyone from motocross racers to trail riders. Moose Racing combines materials and styling to not only create durable, comfortable racewear, but to also produce apparel that stays on trend. Moose Racing’s designers have honed the fit of the company’s racing-centric chassis over the years, and these days, changes are focused on small adjustments for durability and style. The integrated stretch panels allow each piece to move comfortably with a rider’s body despite the more tailored styling. Whatever the style trends may be, having racewear that lasts never goes out of style. Moose Racing designers opted for polyester and nylon materials that have a heavier gauge in areas where it’s needed and a lighter gauge in low-stress areas, creating a blend of durability and performance. Triple-stitched seams, high-denier material in high-abrasion areas, full grain leather panels and high-quality fasteners are all aspects that keep Moose The Moose Racing M1 series of pants and jerseys are a popular choice for off-road riders. Moose Racing has updated the look on the 2022 range of M1 jerseys and pants, but has retained all the great features that riders love about the gear.
racewear intact and ready for the next round. However, the higher quality does not translate to a higher price point, since pricing is kept at a competitive level. The M1 jerseys are constructed of a semi-ventilated polyester stretch fabric, providing a great all-around chassis that provides comfort, ease of movement and strength. The flat-stitched seams and collar design add to the comfort level, as do the sleeves, which are positioned for a riding stance. Off-road riding is dirty work, but there is no reason to make it more of a mess than it needs to be, so the locations of the ventilated panels were carefully selected to make sure they wouldn’t be in the roost zone. In addition to airflow, the M1 jersey also keeps riders cool since the fabric dries quickly, wicking away sweat instead of getting sticky. Moose Racing designed the M1 pants to be incredibly tough. That durability begins with the high-denier polyester chassis, which is put together with double- and triple-stitched seams for maximum strength. The knees get extra attention, with full-grain inner panels adding
another barrier between rider and bike. The seat of the M1 pants have a reinforced panel, too, for an extra bit of abrasion resistance. All of that might make it sound like the M1 pants are stiff and heavy, but Moose Racing took care to ensure that isn’t the case. The pants are actually lighter than their predecessors. To ensure comfort, especially while riding, the pants feature pre-curved legs and stretch panels in key areas to aid mobility. The knees also have a structured mesh panel that provides ventilation. M1 gear pairs perfectly with Moose Racing’s M1.3 MX boots, which are a premium off-road footwear option. The boots are made from a polyurethane-coated synthetic leather that has a heavyweight suede inner calf guard. TPU reinforcements on the shin, ankle and foot are combined with an internal rigid steel shank to provide additional resistance and stability. The lower toe box is an updated design from the previous M1.2 boots that improves brake feel and ease of shifting. Inside the M1.3 MX boots, a speed lacing system adds stability, a moisture-wicking liner keeps a rider’s feet comfortable and soft EVA foam adds cushioning in impact areas. To complete the look, riders can add a pair of MX1 gloves. Pre-curved fingers, a stretch-fit backhand and out-seam construction make them comfortable, and sublimated graphics keep them looking fresh. Silicone tacky grips and D3O knuckles complete the package. ■

Like the front speakers, the rear speakers are two-way, 6½-inch composite, but mounted in pods designed to affix to the X3 roll cage. A 10-inch subwoofer in an under-seat enclosure powered by a 400-watt amplifier rounds out the powerful, clean sound. Installation is eased with a complete, plug-and-play wiring harness that has the capability of accommodating an additional amp and subwoofer, creating the perfect opportunity to add MB Quart’s subwoofer kit. This kit includes a 10-inch subwoofer in the same Can-Am specific enclosure with a 400-watt amplifier. The Stage 5 wiring harness accommodates these components, adding up to a complete audio system capable of pushing as much crisp, powerful sound as your customers can handle. ■

High-Performance Drive Chain
T
here’s a saying – a chain is as strong as its weakest link. And Regina Chain, makers of motorcycle drive chains since 1939, strives to make every link in its wide range of chains as strong as possible. Regina’s latest entry is the Black Dual, a highmileage Z-ring chain designed especially for street and off-road motorcycles fitted with 520 and 525 chains. Laser marking on each chain’s outer plates identify dimension (520 or 525), model (ZRA), the serial number and the origin of the chain – right in Italy.
DRIVE CHAIN
Maximum Strength
Regina’s Black Dual is a high-mileage Z-ring chain designed especially for street and off-road motorcycles fitted with 520 and 525 chains.
To achieve maximum strength, Black Dual chains are made using durable carbon alloy steel components. Add to that solid bushings and rollers, plus shot-peened pins, plates and rollers and you have a dual-purpose chain boasting high fatigue resistance. Regina Chain’s specially formulated Z-ring seals and pre-stretching ensure reduced chain elongation and extended mileage between lubrication intervals.
The Black Dual’s natural steel finish also means that it’s similar in appearance to OE chains found on many newmodel bikes. Its natural finish also makes the Black Dual a solid and economical choice for vintage motorcycle restoration projects. ■

One Tough Hook
Tricky Springs Don’t Stand a Chance
Motion Pro’s Tuff Hook is a great tool for tackling tough springs. The tip of the tool features a notch for pushing hard-to-reach springs off their mounts.
T
he springs that secure exhausts, side-stands and center stands can be a real bear. Novices might try to pry them off with a screwdriver or needlenose pliers, but that’s a recipe for frustration and busted knuckles. Pros know to use a spring puller, but even then the attack angle may make the job a challenge. Enter Motion Pro’s new Tuff Hook, a great tool for tackling tough springs. As usual, Motion Pro has taken a common yet tricky task and found a way to make it quicker, easier, and safer.
The Tuff Hook is the ideal tool for handling the securing springs found on today’s motorcycles, UTVs, and snow machines. It’s got a big knurled-aluminum handle for a secure grip, and a long steel shaft for better leverage when pulling springs off their mounts.
Can’t get a straight shot on that spring? No worries. Slide the collar on the Tuff Hook’s shaft back to reveal a stainlesssteel flexing insert that’ll let you get into tight spaces and apply leverage from multiple angles. For added versatility, the tip on the Tuff Hook incorporates a notch to help push hard-to-reach springs off their mounts. On top of these innovative features, the Tuff Hook is just, well, tough. It’s a beefy tool that’s built to last, and comes with a limited lifetime warranty. ■

High-Performance Connecting Rods
T
he main task of connecting rods is to transfer – not make – horsepower. To do that a con-rod must reliably deliver smooth operation to the crankshaft. That demand is even more critical for racing applications where torque, horsepower and high rpm are paramount for peak performance. With that in mind, Wiseco set out several years ago to develop the Racer Elite connecting rods for motocross and off-road bikes and ATVs. Wiseco’s engineers relied on proprietary USA-made steel forgings boasting betteraligned grain flow for superior strength in every Racer Elite connecting rod made. New and advanced heat-treating methods for optimized hardness in the rod beam were applied, and a proprietary design in the rod’s big end further optimized weight while maintaining strength. A wider, polished thrust face with oiling slots improved lubrication and heat transfer, further helping create a more durable connecting rod. Then came the ultimate test – racing. For that, Wiseco teamed with Joe Gibbs Racing where veteran engine
Wiseco’s Racer Elite connecting rods are designed to deliver smooth operation to the crankshaft, which in-turn helps to make more power.
developer Dean Baker applied his vast experience and knowledge with motocross engines to fine-tune the Racer Elite design to the level of performance that all race teams (professional and amateur alike) can now access.
CONNECTING RODS
Power Transfer
Baker’s approach was simple; he views connecting rods as friction eliminators. The less friction generated between the rod and its crank bearing and wrist pin, the more power to be made. The payoff has been undeniable success at racetracks throughout America. ■

Winter Workers
Plow Systems for ATVs and UTVs
Moose Utility Division’s range of plows and mounting systems for ATVs and UTVs will help clear the way when winter is at its worst.
I
n most places in North America, leaves are starting to turn, the days are getting shorter and the temperatures are cooling off. For a lot of dealers, that means it’s time to stock up on winter products. ATVs and UTVs continue to be the hard workers of the powersports industry during the winter months, and many of them will work more as the snow piles up. Moose Utility Division’s range of plows and mounting systems lets ATVs and UTVs clear the way when winter is at its worst. The V-Plow is made especially for larger vehicles, and it is recommended for ATVs and UTVs of 700cc and up. The V-blades are available in two sizes, 72 inches and 82 inches. For each size, the blade heights taper up from the center of the blade, which increases plow capacity. The V-plow comes standard with a manual adjust system, and there are many possible plowing positions so a customer can get just the right setup for the job. There is also an optional hydraulic turn kit, an upgrade that makes blade angle adjustments effortless. Standard and county blades are both offered in 50-inch and 60-inch sizes. These styles feature a wing design and a blade curve that guides snow up and away from the surface. The county blade has an additional curved panel on the top edge. Both plow styles have sturdy construction topped with a powder coated finish, which helps them stand up to the harshest of winter conditions.

Customers who want a lightweight option can choose the poly plow blade, which combines the lightness of poly with the sturdiness of a steel rib structure. That means it is easy to mount, even though it’s a sizable plow blade available in both 60-inch and 72-inch sizes. Moose Utility Division has a range of mounting systems and push tubes, including heavy duty designs, to suit a lot of different ATV and UTV models. One of the popular mounting systems is the RM5, which is designed for people who don’t want to waste time when it comes to getting the plowing done. The RM5 has a pull-pin system that makes taking the plow off and on easy, and it provides up to 30 inches of lift. In addition to being convenient, the RM5 mounting system is also incredibly sturdy, with two-inch square steel tubing topped with a matte black powder coat. ■
