Pandemic-Style Supercross by D on Em de
L
ast year we were all getting used to a new word – Coronavirus. It wasn’t long until event cancellations began to happen, including Supercross racing. It seemed a little nutty when it was first announced that for safety purposes, the series would finish out with a string of races all at the same Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. Actually, it worked out with races both on Saturday as well as one mid-week. For safety, no crowds, but it made good TV. Now for 2021, a modified version of Supercross in a pandemic is underway and it looks like we have another great season under way. The AMA and Feld Entertainment came up with a 17-race series at seven venues. So, we have more locations, and with just a few exceptions, we still get three races from the same stadium with the mid-week race before they move on to the next track. In this issue, we have Supercross covered well. THOR’s line for 2021 is featured of course. After all, the legendary Torsten Hallman started the company and inspired many to build up the sport of Motocross and later, Supercross into the gigantic industry it has become. Be sure to check out on page 14 our report of the first set of races in Houston. At press time, the series was just moving over to Indianapolis. Star Racing / THOR team riders Christian Craig and Colt Nichols each bagged a 250 East win in Houston and plan to battle it out for the season championship. In the 450s, KTM rider Cooper Webb has one win to his credit already and also right in the hunt for the title in his class.
Christian Craig
Speaking of Star Racing, this year they have expanded their program with Yamaha, and are now running both the 250 and 450 teams. The Yamaha 450 factory riders for 2021 are both Star Racing alumni and outfitted in THOR gear of course: Aaron Plessinger and Dylan Ferrandis. Starting on page 20 we feature the story of Bobby and Loretta Regan and their amazing 40 years of supporting young motocross and supercross riders. Their first national level championship came in 2010 when Jessica Patterson took her first AMA Women’s Motocross Championship, and has been followed by ten AMA 250 Pro Motocross and Supercross titles with Jeremy Martin, Cooper Webb, Aaron Plessinger and Dylan Ferrandis. One other story that I ask you to read starting on page 54 is about the recovery program in Northern California and other areas ravaged last summer and fall by forest fires. As long as I have known him, Don Amador has constantly been at work to keep trails open for offroading, and now he has joined forces with others in a program called the Post Wildfire OHV Recovery Alliance (PWORA). Please read it, and there is some contact information if you would like to know more, or perhaps contribute to their non-profit organization. ■

In his fourth season with the FMF KTM Factory Racing Team, Toth will compete in the GNCC and National Enduro Championship for 2021. He will be joined by teammate Kelley, who is set to line up for his second season with the team, contesting the GNCC and National Enduro Championships.

I’m also excited to welcome Trystan and Dante to the factory team. They are no strangers to our program as they both raced for RPM KTM Racing Team last year with great success. The team will welcome two new riders in 2021 as former KTM-Support riders Trystan Hart and Dante Oliveira make the jump to the factory squad after years of solid results under the guidance and support of the highly successful RPM KTM Racing Team. EVERETT BRASHEAR
Everett Brashear, a Texas native, enjoyed a long and amazing life, first as a top-ranked motorcycle racer and later as an industry executive and sales representative for a number of manufacturers of motorcycles and aftermarket products. At Sturgis in 1952, Brashear scored the first-ever AMA National victory for the all-new Harley KR model race bike. Despite losing the sight in one eye along the way, he went on to win 14 more AMA National races in his career as well as countless non-National races. His last National win came in 1960, after which he retired to join the sales force at Johnson Motors, the west coast Triumph distributor. In the years to follow, Brashear held sales and management positions with Yamaha, Kawasaki and Husqvarna as well as numerous aftermarket companies including Buco, S&W, Goodyear, Bell Helmets, Super Seer Corporation and others. Everett Brashear was inducted into numerous Halls of Fame, including the AMA, Sturgis and Trailblazers, and in 2016 he was inducted into the very exclusive Motorsports Hall of Fame. He was 93 years old when he passed away on October 29th. He is survived by his son, Sam, and daughter, JoAnna, and their families.
DON GRAVES
Don Graves was part of a group of motorcycle insiders who helped get the Japanese motorcycle manufacturers established in the United States in the early-1960s. Most of them had either raced and/or worked for Triumph and other brands when Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki needed sales reps and managers to run their U.S. operations. Don first became a sales rep in Texas for American Honda and in 1960 was making news with racing success on a little 50cc Honda. He rose up in the industry, moving to Suzuki, Yamaha and later Kawasaki, where in 1968 he became their National Sales Manager. The U.S. motorcycle aftermarket was also in need of people with business experience to run their companies. Graves eventually left the OEMs and took on numerous positions through the years with companies including S&W, Interpart, K&N, LeMans Corporation (Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties) and others. Don always stayed busy. Based in the San Diego area, he was a partner for many years with Baja legend Ron Bishop in a Husqvarna dealership. He also managed the Accessories Pavilion at the annual IMS consumer shows and in recent years worked with his good friend Rob Hassay representing aftermarket manufacturers at the big rallies such as Sturgis, Daytona Bike Week and Biketoberfest. Don Graves was a Trailblazers Hall of Fame inductee. He was 89 when he passed away on December 12th. ■

Had fun battling in the main with my teammate (Craig) and it was awesome to hear some fans in the stadium.”
Parts Unlimited is well represented in the series by several past champions, as well as rising stars, outfitted in THOR and Moose Racing racewear.
The Monster Energy Star Yamaha 450 squad, which is taking over the Yamaha factory effort, will field Aaron Plessinger and Dylan Ferrandis. Plessinger is a former 250 National Motocross Champion, and has been getting stronger every season on the 450. Ferrandis is moving up to the 450 class in 2021 after his best season on a 250 where he won both the 250 Supercross West Championship and the 250 National Motocross Championship.
We’ll begin with the Monster Energy Star Yamaha Team, outfitted in THOR gear and fielding Yamaha’s 250cc as well as 450cc hopes. New to the 250 squad is Christian Craig, as well as Supercross rookies Nate Thrasher and Jarrett Frye. Returning veterans include Justin Cooper, Jeremy Martin, and Colt Nichols. Craig has started the series with a first place victory at the opener, followed by a third place podium at round two and a second in round three. He currently sits first in points for the 250 Supercross East title. “I’ve dreamed of this for so long,” said Craig after his round one victory. “I’m the oldest one here so I’m got to outsmart everyone.” Right behind him is Nichols with a third in

Champion Cooper Webb. Musquin started 2021 strong with a third in the opener followed by top ten efforts. Webb struggled in the first two rounds and then reminded everyone why he won the 2019 Supercross Championship by winning round three. “What a night getting my first win of the season round three at Houston!” said Webb. “Great start and good riding in the main all the way to the final lap! You never know what can happen. Thank you to all the fans and team!” Also, keep an eye on the H.E.P. Twisted Tea Suzuki team of Max Anstie, Brandon Hartranft and Adam Enticknap. They will be riding in THOR gear. Both Hartranft and Enticknap both made it to the main events at the opening rounds in Houston. Watch for them to get stronger and start moving up as the season goes on. Moose Racing will also have a large presence in 2021 at Supercross and Arenacross. The Phoenix Racing Honda Team’s 2021 rider line-up will wear Moose Racing racewear and includes Kyle Peters who will return for another season and defend his #1 plate in the AMA Kicker Arenacross Series. Peters started off his title defense in the 2021 Kicker AMA Arenacross Championship in style after winning all four Pro main events at the series opener in Starkville, Mississippi on January 8-9. He has continued to win and remains undefeated in the 2021 Arenacross Series as of this writing. “I’m thankful I was able to keep the ball rolling,” said Peters after his most recent victory. “The Phoenix Racing Honda team has been putting in the work and I’m feeling really good on the bike! I’m so thankful for everyone behind me, let’s keep this going.”
After the Arenacross wraps up, Peters will compete in the 250 West Supercross Series. Phoenix Racing will also have a presence in the Monster Energy 250 Supercross East Series led by Mason Gonzales, Enzo Lopes and Josh Osby. Osby has already scored a couple of top ten finishes at the opening rounds of the 250 SX East Series. At press time your Parts Unlimited riders were leading the way once again in the Supercross (450) Premier class, the 250 East title chase and the Arenacross series. Cheer them on, it’s already a great season! ■

PEDAL OR METAL FRESH 2021 GEAR FOR OFF-ROAD THOR’s Reflex helmet in the new Cast colorway.
T
HOR starts 2021 with fresh graphics and even more polish on decades worth of development and technology, in its state-of-the-art helmet, stalwart motocross gear, and new mountain-bike apparel.
Prime Pro Cast pant and jersey
THOR’s lineup of Prime Pro racewear now offers a Cast graphic, combining modern themes with the Prime’s high-level mobility, ventilation, and comfort – high-end racewear and the choice of factory riders. The Prime Pro pant continues in 2021 with the updated, lay-flat cinch on the side of the waist in addition to the ratchet system on the front of the pant. This allows more adjustability for riders of all shapes and sizes, and a stronger waistline to keep pants in place when accelerating while sitting down. For durability, the knee panels are lined with a special material that reduces knee-brace rubbing and wear on the inside of the pants. Premium-grade, full-grain leather is used on the knee for heat reduction and optimized grip against the machine. An interior hip pocket means a tiny bit of cargo can go along for the ride. The jersey uses laser-cut holes for ventilation (same as the pant), minimal seams, and a taped collar and cuffs. To match the Cast theme of the Prime Pro line, the Reflex helmet is also available in a Cast colorway (and other graphics), putting a fresh look to this high-end lid. As a refresher, this helmet debuted last year and is the result of years of research and development – from labs to Supercross stadiums – as well as partnerships with safety organizations from across the globe.

In addition to the typical expanded polystyrene (EPS) found in a helmet, the Reflex uses a relatively new technology called Koroyd, essentially a cross-sectional layer of tiny welded polymer tubes. In the event of an impact, the tubes are designed to crush and absorb the energy. Crucially, the rest of the time when there is no impact, the tubes are lightweight and flow air better than the conventional EPS foam.

An added layer of safety in the Reflex is the MIPS technology – a plastic lining between the padding and the impact material that allows the helmet to rotate during a hit and lessen the chances of head injuries from shear forces, THOR says. Quick release pull tabs allow the contoured cheek pads to pop out quickly, and the rest of the Reflex’s liner is also removable and washable. This helmet is available with a carbon-fiber or fiberglass-composite shell, and meets the ECE 22.05 Helmet Safety Standard.
Pulse jersey in the new HZRD colorway
THOR MX
Women’s Pulse Sakura jersey and pant
THOR’S Assist shorts are designed specifically for the eMTB market, and feature the same In-Motion material as the high-end Prime Pro and Pulse lines of moto gear.
THOR’s mid-line racewear, the Pulse lineup, was also redesigned at the end of 2020, using durable 600 denier in the seat and knees, combined with generous swaths of the same In-Motion fabric used across the Prime Pro line. The women’s versions of the Pulse jersey and pant keep the updated, athletic fit, and laser-cut ventilation holes have been added to the jersey for better cooling across the line. For spring 2021 the Pulse adds the 03 LE graphic treatment, a throwback to the “full mask” THOR logo originally worn by icons like Grant Langston, Jeremy McGrath and Chad Reed. The HZRD graphic is also new for spring of 2021, available in acid green or vibrant red. Breaking outside pure powersports, THOR continues its partnership with INTENSE to develop a dual-branded line of mountain-biking gear. By embracing the next evolution of off-road riding, THOR has expanded its offerings in the E-bike segment with the Assist line. The bridge between ambitious mountain-bike adventures and motorcycling is obvious for enthusiasts, and so the Assist short uses the same In-Motion material as the high-end Prime Pro and Pulse lines of moto gear, as well as the side-cinch adjustment system on the waistline. Laser cut vents in the thigh aim to keep the pedaler cool. The Assist jersey also utilizes materials from THOR’s moto gear to offer eMTB riders durability, flexibility and comfort
in a variety of conditions. The gear is designed to not only meet the needs of eMTB riders, but also look the part. Both brands have a long history in racing, and INTENSE being a moto-inspired cycling brand makes it an obvious partner for THOR. The gear will be available exclusively through Parts Unlimited dealers. Whether you’re training for Supercross or downhill eMTB competition, seeing the dirt is crucial. THOR’s Sniper Pro goggles are the brand’s high-level eye protection, with anti-fog and scratch resistant lenses that are pre-curved for optimum clarity, a removable nose roost guard, and drilled frame ports for increased ventilation. The Sniper Pro comes in a fleet of colors, from hi-vis pink to faux wood grain, to match any rider’s style.

FROM GRASSROOTS TO CHAMPIONSHIP-WINNING POWERHOUSE
T TEAM PROFILE
o be in the motorcycle racing industry at any level is a passion project – certainly at the grass-roots level. When those roots are fed a steady diet of grit and determination, the sky is the limit, and nowhere is that more clearly demonstrated than with the Star Racing Yamaha team. From Bobby and Loretta Regan’s humble beginnings in the sport, fostering amateur motocross racers in the early ’80s, to now managing the factory Yamaha AMA Supercross and Pro Motocross efforts in both the 250 and premier 450 divisions in 2021, it’s been a full evolution for the Star Racing Yamaha team. Through the loyal support of Parts Unlimited and its flagship brand THOR MX, Star Racing Yamaha has developed itself into a championship-winning powerhouse, with the largest roster in the AMA Supercross paddock today. Much has changed since Star Racing’s days in the amateur and privateer ranks, but these steadfast partnerships, along with the principles that bolstered Star Racing Yamaha’s efforts from day one – passion, determination, teamwork and a family atmosphere – remain the winning recipe. Star Racing became part of Yamaha’s factory effort in 2005, showing steady growth until reaching its first national 20

We had to work really hard to do it and it was feather in our cap that we still think about and still cherish. When we win a championship, we put the number plate on our trailer door, and her championship is the first number plate on that door.” Star Racing Yamaha’s efforts in the 250cc ranks continued to improve, and in recent years, the team has won numerous championships with athletes such as Dylan Ferrandis, Jeremy Martin, Aaron Plessinger and Cooper Webb. The team’s success prompted Yamaha to approach Bobby Regan with the idea of Star Racing taking on Yamaha’s factory 450-class effort, the final step up in the Pro Motocross and Supercross ranks. Regan accepted the monumental task and added the premier-class factory Yamaha roster to Star Racing for 2021, marking a major milestone for the team and turning them into the largest team in the AMA Supercross paddock. Going on four decades into his dedication to racing, in many ways the journey has just begun for Bobby Regan, who now

As the saying goes, the way to make a small fortune in racing is to start with a big one. “You start with a big pile of money, and as you go through, the big pile of money gets lower and lower and lower. And what you make is not money, it’s just satisfaction. Big pile of satisfaction is what you get left with!” Regan said with a laugh. Fortunately for Regan, it’s not about the money, and never has been. It’s about the passion for racing, the dedication, hard work and commitment from sponsors such as Parts Unlimited, Monster Energy, THOR and Yamaha. “We can’t run the team that we run without money, but it’s only part of it. The THOR organization and the THOR clothing and the things that they do for us can’t be duplicated by another company. I talk to them all the time about the quality of their clothing and how good it is,” Regan said. “Their products are superior and it fits us as a superior team. And, it’s a team between us and THOR to achieve that level and we work together to achieve it. So THOR’s not just a supplier; they’re a partner.” In a world where sponsors come and go, and in modern business where professional loyalty rarely spans decades anymore, Star

TEAM PROFILE
Racing Yamaha has defied the odds with Parts Unlimited, THOR and Yamaha. THOR MX brand manager Josh Shorter glows when asked about the company’s enduring relationship with Regan and the Star Racing crew.

“It’s been really just a wonderful fit over the past decade, working with the Star team from their roots, and as they’ve evolved and grown with the sport,”said Shorter.“You talk about the family aspect of it, Bobby treats it like that. And he treats it like that out of a passion for racing. You see him interviews, he says, ‘I’m not chasing dollars here. I’m in this for the racing, for the love of sport, for the passion.’ It’s just wonderful having that perspective because we share that, too. THOR was born of racing. We were started by Torsten Hallman in the ’60’s. And that’s still our perspective today, make the best gear we can, get it out there on the top athletes and push hard. It’s really a perfect alignment, and it’s been great watching the Star team grow and to be along for that ride.” The long-term relationship with Yamaha and Star Racing also began decades ago, as Yamaha Motor USA’s recently retired Racing Division manager Keith McCarty recalls. “Bobby Regan has been around for a long time. He used to race himself and when he started the team, he was a one-man gang, probably long before anyone heard of him. He just had a real passion for racing and wanted to help others,” McCarty said. “He owns a Chevrolet dealership

and he was able to do a little bit for one or two guys, get things rolling. Very grass-roots level and someone he felt deserved a chance, he would give it to them. We saw that at Yamaha when he started building his team. He didn’t have the best of riders, but he started building and really trying to find the right people on the team. “There were some dark days for them, I know, sleeping in his car and driving from track to track, trying to get back home to his real business and such, but his heart’s always been in it and no matter what Yamaha could or couldn’t do, he found a way to make up the difference to get the job done and continue to stay on the circuit. Once they really got some personnel in there to guide them along and be there year after year, things really started to click for them. It’s great to see.” Once the wins started coming on a regular basis, and championships started piling up for the Star Racing team, Yamaha management began to consider a major shift in their premier-class program. As McCarty explains, there was a lot of logic behind the bold move to pour their factory efforts into a private team. “Yamaha, they want to win. The one thing you can’t deny is that Star Racing has a good track record with winning, so who better to talk to about trying to get that 450 program

“This really gives them a great opportunity just to keep things the same. And, for a 250 guy, [it’s a big benefit] knowing that there’s an opportunity somewhere if they really perform, that they’ll have a chance to do it in the 450 class, too. So really, I think it’s a great scenario.” The transition also presents a new set of challenges for the Star Racing Yamaha crew, who have the task of learning a new bike and a new class, but they also now find the entire arsenal of Yamaha R&D at their disposal.

on track, too?” McCarty said. “I think the benefit they have, too, is when you’re developing 250 riders to move them over to the 450 side, there’s very little change for the riders. It’s not new personnel, it’s the same team and the same structure and the same owner, that type of thing. I think it makes it a lot easier for the riders to transition from one class to the other and know that they’re going to have the same level of support and the same people doing it.
“Yamaha has been absolutely wonderful with us. Just about anything we ask for they help us. Their engineers are available to us, not only just with Yamaha USA, but also Yamaha Japan. All these factions have come together and we’re trying to win races for Yamaha in the 450 class. “We’re trying to get there. I’m not going to say we’re there yet. I don’t think we’re far enough along to talk about a championship. This is our first year and we will try to win races and try to get on some podiums. We’ve obviously got to race to get some experience to see what changes we need and this class is going to be different. We’ll learn this year.” The learning is off to a great start. The Star Racing Yamaha team kicked off the 2021 season with a win in Houston as Christian Craig topped the 250SX East main, and they backed it up at round two with the team’s first premier-class podium with Dylan Ferrandis carding a second-place finish in the 450SX main.
THOR/Yamaha rider Dylan Ferrandis after his 250cc victory at the 2019 Ironman National.
“Seeing the 250-class win in their first event out, Christian Craig on the podium, you could tell how heart-felt that was for him,” said McCarty. “The first person he thanked was Bobby Regan and justifiably so. He gave him the opportunity and Christian took full advantage of it. Same with all the guys, I’m sure their best results are ahead of them, here. It will be pretty interesting.” “The sky is the limit for them, now,” said Shorter. “They’re building on this 450 program, and coming out of the gate here in Houston, we saw how well it’s working. All of these guys are capable of a podium, and the wins are going to happen. “Growing and evolving with these riders, it means a lot to us. It’s not just that family unit that you see at Star Racing; it means a lot to THOR because racing is in our DNA. We really appreciate the opportunity to be along with the team and these riders, because like I said, the sky’s the limit.” ■
New to the Star Racing Yamaha 250 squad, Christian Craig started the 2021 series off with a victory at round one in Houston.

very now and then, Icon will design something subtle, with minimal graphics and an underthe-radar aesthetic. Not this time. The new Icon helmets have the big, bold, “Hey, look at me” graphics that define the brand’s attitude. Underneath the graphics, though, are the carefully-engineered helmet features that give riders peace of mind. The Airform ManicR is nightmare fuel in a dayglo green, bright blue or red color palette, with a creature’s giant teeth and wide eyes staring down anyone who dares to look at the helmet. If the creature looks familiar, it’s because it once graced the Icon Mainframe helmet. Now, its latest incarnation has made itself at home on the Airform, which features a fog-free Icon Optics shield, a Dark Smoke internal DropShield and a dayglo spoiler kit. When the sun goes down, the teeth and eyes glow in the dark for added creepiness. The Airform helmet is also the platform for Icon’s new Armed Forces Series. Each of the four helmets pays tribute to a branch of the U.S. military with iconic symbols and styling. A bald eagle, globe and anchor grace the Semper Fi helmet, which has an RST GoldPro shield and a gold spoiler. Its official name might be the A-10 Thunderbolt, but the beast of an aircraft is better known as the Warthog. The Icon Airform helmet of the same name has graphic elements that pay tribute to the legendary Air Force ground support aircraft. Soldiers patrol the matte rubatone gold shell of the Airform Guardian. An RST GoldPro shield is included to cut the glare. The Airform Ship’s Company paints an undersea landscape of myth, tentacle and tridents in bold blue hues with gold foil accents. An RST GoldPro shield caps it all off.

The Airflite Jewel is notable for being a standout among this season’s Icon helmets – the wild graphics are missing, letting a gloss and matte finish combination in gold or silver give this helmet a more understated look. The other notable thing about the Airflite Jewel is that it features the latest rotational-reduction system from MIPS, which helps deflect and disperse energy in the event of an impact. The Airflite helmet is available in three other graphics options, including the 4Horsemen, Crosslink and Ultrabolt. The 4Horsemen graphic ushers in the apocalypse with plenty of skulls and justice. Airflite helmets feature a Hydradry interior liner, internal DropShield for easy transitions from day-to-night riding, a coordinating FliteShield and a spoiler. Last but definitely not least, the Airframe Pro Beastie Bunny helmet is a bubblegum-pink lab experiment gone wrong. Light weight, a coordinating spoiler and a Hydradry liner are some of the perks of the Airframe Pro. ■

Dirt Digger Clutch Kits
Long-Term Off-Road Performance
M
echanically speaking, off-road riders aren’t afraid to dig in deep. Motocross guys have been known to swap pistons right in the pits between motos. Avoiding the need for those heavy-duty overhauls, of course, will always grab a rider’s attention, and when it comes to clutches, Barnett has strong-performing, trouble-free and long-lasting Dirt Digger replacements. Anytime an OEM part or assembly can be swapped for something that not only performs better, but last longer, riders need to know about it. Barnett’s Dirt Digger Clutch Packages, which feature disc-and-spring packs, billet clutch baskets and steel-faced aluminum pressure plates fit the bill. Available for all popular off-road machines – two wheels or four – a Dirt Digger is an upgrade that riders can count on. It’s a clutch built to perform better and to last longer than the OE assembly it replaces.
Whether it’s for racing, for recreation or for hard, heavy work the Dirt Digger Clutch Kits are serious clutch upgrades designed for serious clutch performance.
A Dirt Digger upgrade begins with Barnett’s carbon fiber and Kevlar friction discs, which by themselves are a big step up from OE. These segmented-design discs are matched with precision-ground, tempered-steel drive plates and new, heavy-duty springs. The springs are shot-peened, heat-treated and are 10 to 15 percent stiffer than OEM. All this adds up to positive engagement with a stronger gripping, cooler running, longer lasting clutch. Matching that Dirt Digger clutch pack with a Barnett pressure plate and clutch basket assures total, worry-free clutch performance. Barnett’s off-road pressure plates are machined from top-quality billet aluminum, and feature a tempered-steel friction surface guaranteed to last long. The Barnett pressure plate dissipates heat better than an OE unit, too, further lowering clutch temperatures and extending clutch life even longer.
Barnett’s Dirt Digger billet clutch baskets are a noted upgrade over the OE parts. They’re designed to ensure super smooth clutch operation and provide extended clutch life.
Barnett’s off-road clutch baskets add even more long-life performance. Precision machined from billet aluminum, these baskets feature replaceable stainless-steel inserts for super-smooth clutch operation. The baskets feature custom-machined oil-passage windows that work with the segmented Dirt Digger friction plates to lower operating temperatures. Off-roading can be tough on a bike, ATV or UTV, and your customers know it. With a Barnett Dirt Digger clutch kit, pressure plate and basket in the mix, that’s one critically important area of the machine they won’t have to worry about. That Dirt Digger setup is designed to reliably hook-up and transfer power with easily modulated control and keep on doing it for a good, long while. ■

TIRES

From Evel to Off-Road Tires for Adventurous Riders
S
ure, “adventure” describes a segment of motorcycling, but the same word can also describe the way the legendary Evel Knievel viewed all of his adrenaline-fueled stunts. Avon Tyres has a tire for both types of adventure. In November, the Evel Knievel Museum in Topeka, Kansas, unveiled a fully-restored 1968 “American Eagle” Laverda, a bike on which Knievel made a number of his jumps throughout the late 1960s and the early 1970s. Just as it was back then, the bike is still equipped with Avon Safety Mileage tires. Louis “Rocket” Re, who was both a friend of Knievel’s and a stunt rider himself, found the Laverda and worked out a deal with the current owner to restore the bike to the way it looked when Knievel rode it so that it can be on display at the museum for two years. Original photographs showed that the Laverda had been fitted with Safety Mileage tires, so of course Re turned to Avon Tyres for help completing the look. Those tires have come a long way in the decades since the late Knievel used them. The version of the tire available today, the Safety Mileage MK II, combines the classic styling with modern performance. The block pattern is a throwback to Knievel’s heyday, but the new compound design and the latest construction methods offer modern-day grip, handling and stability. The tires can be used on sidecars, too.
Vintage V-Twin customers and bike builders opting for a retro look should check out Avon’s Safety Mileage MK II tires. They pack modern features into a classic looking tire.

its Trailrider tire would be OEM on the new KTM 890 Adventure. This is probably not a surprise to KTM enthusiasts, since the Avon Trailrider was also OEM on the KTM 790, which the 890 Adventure is replacing. Like the bike, the Avon Trailrider tire is at home both on the road and off of it. It is designed to offer stability and grip in all weather conditions and on all surfaces. The modern carcass construction technology and the tri-compound tread also combine to give the Trailrider high mileage.
During research for the restoration, Re found a magazine advertisement that featured Knievel, an American Eagle Laverda and Avon Tyres. The caption read, “The man on the bike is Evel Knievel. The tires are Avon!” Now, with the Safety Mileage MKII tires, riders can unleash their inner Evel – or at least ride with the same tires. That wasn’t the only big news coming from Avon Tyres in recent months. The company also announced that

Mountain Biking Footwear
Clip-In and Flat Shoes for Mountain Bikes mountain bike use, they are still designed with style in mind. The Mallet and Stamp have skate shoe styling, while the Mallet E has a sportier adventure style. During the past three years, the shoes have been put through rigorous testing both in the lab and on the trail. Everyday riders as well as professional riders gave feedback to help perfect the shoe designs, especially in regard to the proprietary rubber compounds on the outsole.

ince Crankbrothers was founded in 1997, the company has continued to innovate and grow its list of mountain bike products. Tools, wheels, pedals and pumps are among the many things that Crankbrothers has produced. Now, the company can add mountain bike shoes to the list. Although this is the first time Crankbrothers has entered the shoe category, it has been in the works for the past three years. The launch of the Mallet and Mallet-E clipin shoes and the Stamp flat shoe coincides perfectly with the brand’s arrival at Parts Unlimited. With the increasing growth of electric mountain bikes (eMTB) in the powersports industry, dealers can now offer their customers the right footwear for the sport.
The Mallet and Mallet E shoes come ready to ride, with a Crankbrothers shim and cleat pre-installed. This is a notable feature since most brands do not have pre-installed cleats. Instead, the rider has to struggle to mount them in exactly the same position on both shoes. Now, the shoes are ready to ride when they come out of the box. If riders are using an SPD cleat and pedal setup instead of Crankbrothers pedals, the shim and cleat can be easily removed so that the SPD cleat can be installed at the effective cleat height. The cleats are installed in a neutral position, but the Mallet shoe includes what Crankbrothers calls a Race Zone, which allows the cleat to be adjusted further toward the heel for more stability during descents.
One of the most notable features of these new shoes is that Crankbrothers optimized the interface between the pedal and shoe for maximum performance, but riders are not required to pair the Crankbrothers shoe with the Crankbrothers pedals. The shoes are also compatible with any other mountain bike pedal system, giving the customer a broader range of possibilities. The Mallet, Mallet E and Stamp shoes are all focused on the downhill, enduro, allmountain and trail categories of mountain biking. While these shoes are made for

The flat-sole Stamp shoe with the speed lace closure.
The outsoles of the Mallet and Mallet E shoes are made from a mid-friction rubber compound called MC1 that enables easy pedal entry and exit. MC1 has the added benefit of providing more stiffness for an effective power transfer to the pedals. When it comes to the Stamp shoes, the outsole properties have to be able to offer outstanding grip and durability since they are flat shoes. Crankbrothers uses the MC2 high-friction rubber compound for the Stamp’s outsole. This allows the shoe to stick to the pedal body while dampening vibrations at the same time. The tread pattern of the Stamp shoe is also designed for grip, with a focus on maximizing the contact surface. Parts Unlimited will be stocking the Mallet with two closure options, including a BOA Fit System or a classic lacing system. The Mallet E and the Stamp shoe will be available in BOA, speed lacing and classic lacing closures. There are several popular color combinations available for the shoes as well.
The Double Shot 1, 2 and 3 are hybrid pedals, allowing the option of riding clipped in or using them as flat pedals with non-clip type shoes. The Double Shot 1 and 2 have eight molded pins on the flat side while the Double Shot 3 has eight adjustable pins and is designed for more aggressive riding. For riders who prefer flat pedals, Parts Unlimited offers the Stamp series. The Stamp 7 is a premium pro-level pedal featuring a concave platform for superior pedal/ shoe interface and 10 adjustable pins per side for secure grip. The pedal body is constructed of forged 6061 T-6 aluminum. The Stamp 1, 2 and 3 pedals have many of the same features at different price points and size options. ■

The Mallet E pedal is a premium clip type pedal and a perfect match for the Mallet series of shoes. The large platform is constructed from 6061-T6 aluminum and features six adjustable pins per side for the ultimate pedal/shoe interface. The Mallet E has a foursided entry for efficient mud shedding.

Off-Road Racewear with Retro Options
The Agroid glove range is new for 2021.
L
ast spring, Moose Racing debuted its new Agroid gear collection. Now that the racewear is turning a year old, Moose Racing is celebrating with new designs and color schemes for riders to choose from. At the same time, Moose Racing will be celebrating 35 years in business throughout all of 2021.
Every day is Flashback Friday with the new Moose Racing retro look for its Agroid line.
Chaparral/Precision Concepts/Kawasaki rider Clay Hengeveld will take on the 2021 WORCS series in Moose Racing’s new Agroid throw-back old-school colorway.
So what do you do when you are celebrating an anniversary and launching new gear designs at the same time? You go retro, of course. The modern styling and materials of the Agroid gear has been paired with throwback looks to celebrate both then and now. Among the new Agroid designs are two jerseys with old-school colorways and graphics that evoke Moose Racing’s early years. The company started in the 1980s, but it was in the early 1990s when the first Moose Racing off-road gear began to appear. The pink and blue color schemes of these two new Agroid designs will take customers right back to the ‘90s, whether they’re old enough to have experienced that decade the first time or not. For riders who prefer a modern look, there are three additional colorways and designs available for the Agroid pants and jerseys, too. Moose Racing’s Agroid collection is designed to offer extreme ease of movement both on and off the bike to give racers the necessary blend of performance, comfort and style. The materials are flexible and breathable, and the performance fit chassis takes the humble off-road jersey to a new level. Throughout the development of the Agroid collection, Moose Racing teamed up with top riders who

field-tested the gear. Their feedback helped the Moose Racing designers make adjustments to perfect each piece. The first Agroid pants and jerseys appeared last spring, but the Agroid Pro gloves are brand new. Moose Racing designed a new glove chassis from the ground up that is very flexible and helps a rider easily grip the bars. A lightweight stretch polyester material is paired with a single-layer Clarino palm to provide the right mix of comfort and abrasion resistance. Sublimated graphics in black, white, blue and red color options means there is a coordinating option for each of the Agroid jersey and pants combinations—yes, retro jerseys included. The Agroid jersey begins with a lightweight stretch polyester chassis that is cut large enough to ensure comfortable movement, but not so big that it is bulky. The quick-drying nature of the material plus laser-cut ventilation holes help riders stay cool even while working hard, and the sublimated graphics don’t restrict the breathability of the chassis. Stretch mini-cuffs keep sleeves in place without binding. The Agroid pants are made from a durable stretch polyester woven material. Like the jersey, the pants feature laser-cut ventilation holes for extra airflow. The seat and knees are
made from a woven stretch ripstop polyester in a doublelayer style. Paired with an extended leather inner and outer knee guard, this design creates additional fortification. At the same time, the stretch properties allow for a slim fit over knee braces or guards, but without hindering movement at all. The pants have a pre-bent ergonomic design, too, for increased comfort on the bike. A three-point waist adjustment system fine-tunes the fit. Let’s go back to the 1990s again. As Moose Racing was preparing to debut its first pieces of rider gear, the company decided to use the 1994 FIM International Six Days of Enduro (ISDE) at Zink Ranch near Tulsa, Oklahoma as the launching point. Top riders from around the world showed up to compete in head-to-toe Moose Racing gear, among them riders like Steve Hatch, Kelby Pepper, Jeff Russell and Rodney Smith. Since then, Moose Racing has continued to maintain a presence in national and international competition, supporting riders at all levels of the sport. In addition to its sponsored pro riders, Moose Racing also supports racing series throughout the United States, helping riders not just get geared up, but also ensuring that riders have somewhere to go race. In 2021, fans will see some of the biggest teams wearing the new Moose Racing Agroid racewear. Among those teams are Factory Gas Gas Coastal Racing, Phoenix Racing Honda, Precision Concepts Chaparral Racing Kawasaki, Trail Jesters KTM and Magna 1 Motorsport Husqvarna. ■

The Fundamentals of Balance
Creating Future Riders One Strider Bike at a Time The Strider 12-inch Classic balance bikes are designed to instill confidence and coordination for riders approximately from 18 months to 3-years old.
C
hanging the world doesn’t happen overnight. In fact, Ryan McFarland, the founder of Strider Bikes, never set out to even try. He just wanted to share his passion for bicycles and motorcycles with his 2-year-old son, Bode. Ryan was a bit obsessed with that passion – to the point of buying more than $2,000 worth of traditional learn-to-ride vehicles – ride-on toys, tricycles, training-wheel bikes, and even a training-wheelequipped motorcycle. However, as he observed his eager young boy trying to operate these machines, he realized that they were all too large, too heavy and too complicated. Plus, they didn’t focus on the fundamental skill of balance. The solution was either to wait a couple of years for his son to grow or build him a better machine – so he created the better machine. Ryan stripped, chopped, sanded, cut, and welded on Bode’s little 12-inch bike until he came up with what would become the very first Strider Bike. It was super light, sized perfectly for Bode, and allowed him to put both feet on
the ground. Bode took to the simple, lightweight machine immediately. Having such good control of the little bike boosted his confidence and advanced his skills quickly. People started noticing Bode riding his Strider around town. Ryan realized that it wasn’t just Bode who could benefit from his little garage creation, but kids around the world could experience the same success, adventure and freedom. And with this, Strider Bikes was born. Strider was established in 2007 in Rapid City, South Dakota, just down the road from the legendary Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The company just sold its 3 millionth bike worldwide! Strider has expanded its presence beyond little ol’ South Dakota and is now available through Parts Unlimited as part of the 2021 Bicycle catalog offerings. The company knows that the excitement doesn’t stop once the box is opened and a child takes their first strides on their new bike. Strider decided to go big or go home, so it created exclusive Strider Events to help build an entire community of Strider riders who can come together to
With the Strider lineup of balance bikes your customers can get a jumpstart on introducing a life on two wheels to their children. The bikes are the brainchild of company founder Ryan McFarland who wanted to share his passion for bicycles and motorcycles with his 2-year-old son Bode.

As events are beginning to open back up worldwide, Strider will offer both recreational and competitive events, in an effort bring children and parents together to meet new people and make new friends. These events provide a family-friendly venue to grow their appetite for riding while creating memories for life. Strider firmly believes it’s important to educate as many individuals as possible on how to ride a bike. Strider supports the All Kids Bike movement, a nonprofit organization that puts bikes in kindergarten PE classes in public schools. From a garage start-up to having a worldwide reach, Strider inspires kids through its products, events, and education efforts. To help as many people as possible to experience an astonishing life on two wheels, in 2014, Strider developed the Strider Rider Fund which commits 1 percent of gross revenue each year to charity. This commitment to benevolence helps organizations and public institutions create riders who develop confidence and a love of both bikes and motorcycles!
Encouraging a lifelong love of riding starts by simply carrying a few Strider Bikes in your shop and educating parents and grandparents on the importance of teaching children to ride. Explain that starting early makes riding safe, easy and fun. ■

Teaching kids to ride is a cause to be celebrated by the entire powersports industry, and it resonates with the DNA of the founder and employees of the company. The Grip to Rip!
Tires Designed for Track and Trail
The biteMX tire from AMS is a versatile intermediate-terrain tire that delivers exceptional performance in the woods, the desert, or on a groomed track.
R
eplacing worn, rounded-off knobbies for a fresh set of tires will give any dirtbike a new lease on life by way of better handling and more traction to accelerate, corner and brake. So, when your customers are in the market for motocross tires that are high on technology and performance but won’t put the hurt on their wallets, point them toward the new motocross tire from AMS that they named biteMX. AMS built its reputation by offering a wide array of affordable wheels and tires for off-road vehicles, and while most of AMS’s offerings are aimed at side-by-sides and other fourwheelers, the company has now applied its tire-making expertise to the two-wheeled off-road segment.

a wide range of terrain. Extensive testing ensures the tire’s sidewalls and tread foundation are tuned to tackle everything from rocky, rooted technical trails to wide-open, high-speed desert expanses. Capping it off is an aggressive tread structure molded from a natural-rubber compound that displays an exceptionally low wear rate while still providing strong, consistent traction in the wet and dry. A semi-wide tread pattern bites into the trail when the surface is soft and loose, and careful block placement promotes powerful self-cleaning when the riding gets muddy. Along the shoulder of the new biteMX, tread spacing is reduced to provide enhanced support for consistent feedback and traction while cornering.
The biteMX is a versatile intermediate-terrain tire that delivers exceptional performance at a price point that your customers will love, and it’s available in a range of popular sizes to fit all your customers’ needs. Whether they’re equipping their kids’ minibikes or their own fullsize motos, and whether they’re headed to the woods, the desert, or a groomed track, the biteMX will give them the traction and handling they want.
From the inside out, the biteMX features materials, technologies and design aspects intended to make it a great tire choice for your off-road customers. AMS offers the biteMX in 12 sizes (four front, eight rear) to fit anything your customers have.
The foundation of the biteMX is a sturdy, lightweight, four-ply carcass that’s tuned to yield a balance of durability, handling and ride quality for a variety of bikes across

The oil in this kit also integrates the new PEAC additive system that’s designed to improve engine cleanliness, clutch performance, power and acceleration. This unique additive system is exclusive to the Maxima 4-stroke engine oil line-up, and is one of the reasons your customers can trust Maxima to protect their engines under the most severe conditions. Maxima’s SXS oil exceeds the requirements of API SN PLUS / JASO MA2 and is therefore OEM approved for all brands. To keep that premium-synthetic oil working its best, Quick Change Kits include either a cartridge or spin-on ProFilter. Featuring M-Pleat technology, these premium filters have a significantly larger filtration area than an ordinary filter and therefore have a greater capacity to hold contaminants and protect the engine. ProFilter spin-on filters are built as tough as the sideby-sides for which they’re designed, with a 16-point welded canister for increased strength. Filters are leaktested during production, and feature a pre-lubricated sealing ring for easy installation and a 17mm hex nut to aid removal. ProFilter Oil Filters also have anti-drain back valves allowing for optimum oil pressure and flow as soon as the engine is started. ■

Bridgestone’s new Battlax Sport Touring T32 and T32 GT tires offer riders increased performance in the wet, with significant improvements in features like grip, water evacuation and braking distance.
W
hen it comes to sport touring, a rider needs performance and confidence in their tires no matter what the weather conditions might be. As much as riders dream of ticking off the miles under sunny skies and moderate temperatures, tires must be ready to tackle those inevitable times when the weather doesn’t go according to plan. Bridgestone had that in mind when designing the new Battlax Sport Touring T32 and T32 GT tires. Compared to its predecessor, the T32 tires offer riders increased performance in the wet, with significant improvements in features like grip, water evacuation and braking distance. As the successor to the Battlax T31 tires, the new T32 line benefits from construction and compound modifications that provide a shorter wet braking distance and a larger contact patch on the rear tire. In all, the T32 and T32 GT tires have outstanding handling capabilities in both dry and wet conditions, as well as excellent high speed, straight line and cornering stability.

As the successor to the Battlax T31 tires, the new T32 line benefits from construction and compound modifications that provide a shorter wet braking distance and a larger contact patch on the rear tire.
Stopping in the wet is more efficient with the T32 tire compared to the T31 tire, with a 7 percent shorter wet braking distance. The shorter stopping distance doesn’t sacrifice the wear life of the tire either, so Bridgestone has been able to combine longevity with improved performance.
The Battlax Sport Touring T32 and T32 GT tires both feature Bridgestone’s state of the art Pulse Groove Technology, which combines pulse-shaped grooves with small center deflectors. This design helps equalize the waterflow compared to a straight groove, which in turn optimizes the waterflow’s speed. This means the water is channeled and drained more efficiently while riding in wet conditions, increasing the tire’s grip and decreasing the slip ratio. Silica-rich compounds help improve grip, as well.
Designed for heavier bikes, the Battlax Sport Touring T32 GT tire has a 10 percent improved wear life compared to the T31 GT tire. The T32 GT tire also has improved pattern stiffness which provides additional stability for middleweight and heavy motorcycles.
The Battlax Sport Touring T32 rear tire has a 13 percent larger contact patch than its predecessor, which improves wet cornering grip, provides more adhesive area and improves contact feel in all riding conditions.

ow that the western U.S. is in its wet season, authorities have been able to look back at the impacts of the 2020 wildfire season, tally the damages done, and plan ways to restore and reopen public land recreation facilities that were ravaged by the blazes. According to federal agencies, wildfires in the U.S. in 2020 burned nearly 14 million acres and destroyed more than 18,000 structures as suppression costs alone topped $3.6 billion. That’s about double the 10-year average and the most acres burned since reliable record-keeping began in 1983.

SPECIAL FEATURE A rider does a little off-road trail recon after the Mill fire in the Mendocino National Forest.
The USDA Forest Service manages 18 national forests in the Pacific Southwest Region, which encompasses over 20 million acres across California. At the height of the fires that raged in 2020, eight of the 18 national forests were closed - Angeles, Cleveland, Inyo, Los Padres, Mendocino, San Bernardino, Shasta-Trinity, Sequoia, Sierra, Six Rivers, and Stanislaus. Closures prohibited using roads and trails within the forests as the Forest Service and other agencies attempted to a) mitigate additional wildfire starts and b) provide for public safety. Bouncing back from such devastation is going to take a coordinated effort from a diverse group of collaborators. Consisting of volunteer off-road vehicle enthusiasts and land-use experts, the Post Wildfire OHV Recovery Alliance (PWORA) is one such group willing to mobilize volunteers and deploy resources to mitigate post-disaster impacts to recreation areas and local communities. The PWORA is a national non-profit organization founded to protect and restore sustainable OHV recreation from the devastating effects of intense wildfires and other natural disasters. The primary objectives are to provide a rapid response volunteer labor pool to respond to OHV areas impacted by wildfires, assist the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) with skilled volunteer labor to

These efforts have a direct impact on the powersports community. From dealers and enthusiasts to the OEMs and the aftermarket, having accessible recreational areas available for riders is imperative for business. PWORA is led by a six-member Board of Directors that is augmented by business supporters, volunteers and professional advisors. Among the leadership team is Don Amador, who has been in the trail advocacy and recreation management profession for almost 30 years. Owner of a recreation and land-use consulting company, Amador has served on many recreation stake-holder groups and resource advisory committees. They include the California Forest Management Taskforce and the BLM’s Central California Resource Advisory Committee, the BlueRibbon Coalition and the California Department of Parks and Recreation Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Commission.
Getting OHV areas back up and running after a wildfire has a huge impact on the area's local economy.
“In a nutshell, PWORA is the country’s first post-wildfire recovery non-profit of any type – not just motorized – that is solely focused on rebuilding recreational facilities after a wildfire or other natural disaster,” Amador told Parts Magazine during a recent interview. “Outdoor recreation is a critical economic driver in many rural areas, yet when a wildfire comes through an area, usually restoring the recreational facilities – the trails, the campgrounds, etc. – are always at the bottom of the to-do list for authorities, who are mainly focused on stabilizing roads and getting rid of major hazards. Rebuilding a burnt toilet, OHV trail or even a non-motorized trail is very low priority.” Amador said the idea of launching a recreation-oriented restoration non-profit started via conversations with colleagues back in 2012-2013, after a series of wildfires in California. “We [folks in OHV] had a problem and recognized that we needed to be a part of the solution,” Amador said. “At the same time, the Forest Service and BLM were starting to look toward partners in helping to manage public lands. So we talked about that for a number of years until finally, in 2018, the final straw came when the wildfire season took out four of the five major off-road riding areas here in northern California. “See, typically when a fire comes through, it closes a landscape for one or two years, and what that can do is impact the economic vitality of a region. If nobody comes to recreate, it kills sales for everyone from the main street ice cream shop to the ORV dealers,” Amador added. “People couldn’t go to all of those riding places in central and northern California, so dealers saw their sales and service go down pretty significantly – in many cases I heard about declines from -20 percent to -30 percent.
"If nobody comes to recreate, it kills sales for everyone from the main street ice cream shop to the ORV dealers,” said PWORA's Don Amador.

Forest after the devastating Complex Fire is an excellent example of how local land managers and stewardship groups can use Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative funds to address critical issues limiting access to public land,” said Steve Nessl, Yamaha’s motorsports marketing manager. “Yamaha’s support of the Post Wildfire OHV Recovery Alliance helps put resources on the ground to assess trail damage and put a plan in place to bring them back to a condition the public can access safely and responsibly.” How does the PWORA choose which areas to revitalize? “As of now, even though we’re a national organization, we had to get started somewhere and so have really been focused on the landscapes here in what we consider our backyard - the Forest Service and BLM lands that were damaged in the 2018 wildfire season,” Amador says. “Then, hopefully, as we build capacity, we’ll be able to begin on working on some of the lands that were damaged by the wildfire season last year. There’s certainly no shortage of work, especially when you think of other states like Colorado, Washington and Oregon.” As for the future, Amador says the organization has spent the past two years going through what he called the “founding” phase and is now going into the “implementation” phase – working to build capacity, raise funds, and bring on some key staff.

PWORA volunteers generally go into an area after a fire and do things like clear trails, reinstall signs that were burnt down, rebuild trail delineators like fences – mostly grunt work, Amador noted. “We’re currently in the process of building our capacity, not only getting equipment put together and building a rapid-response team from donations like the $15,000 we received from Yamaha, but also getting a master agreement with Region 5 of the Forest Service, which essentially authorizes and guides us in our post-wildfire restoration, and supplies us with things like trail dozer certification and chainsaw certification.” The PWORA’s recent work on fire damaged facilities in the Mendocino National Forest is what spurred Yamaha Motor Corp. USA to grant the organization funding. “Rehabilitating motorized recreation trails on the Mendocino National

So, we’re trying to build up our resources to be able to bring on at least one paid staff and a bookkeeper.” ■

hether customers are looking for a workhorse wheel that still looks stylish or a tire that can handle aggressive riding with ease, Moose Utility Division has it. The latest wheels and tires available from the company give ATV and UTV riders even more options for getting their rides perfectly set up. Moose Utility Division X-rays every wheel on the production line. Not only does this ensure quality and reliability, but it also instills confidence in customers that they can take these wheels off-road and subject them to harsh conditions without worrying about hidden weaknesses. The 399X wheel proves that just because a wheel is designed to handle hard work, doesn’t mean it can’t still look good, too. The gray 399X wheels can handle riding in the woods, deep mud and even sand, making them versatile for a wide range of riding scenarios. The front wheels can handle load capacities from 675 pounds for the smaller, 12x7-inch size while the smaller rear wheel, a 12x8-inch option, can handle up to 1150 pounds of weight. That means the wheels meet or exceed the current market requirements, so customers can be confident that the 399X is as sturdy as it is good-looking. The larger wheel sizes available are a 14x7-inch front and a 14x8-inch rear. Each wheel arrives with one black and one gray center cap.
Moose Utility Division’s new 399X wheels can handle riding in the woods, deep mud and even sand, making them a versatile option for your customers.
New to the Moose Utility Division lineup this year are steel wheels for both ATVs and UTVs. These 12x7-inch wheels are a great choice for replacing OEM wheels because they provide quality and cost savings. The high-strength steel construction ensures durability in even harsh riding conditions, and the multiple bolt patterns available mean there are plenty of fitment possibilities.

Another new product making its debut is the Rattler tire. Designed specifically for sport ATVs, the Rattler tire is designed for riders who want tires that can stand up to more aggressive riding. The rubber compound is carefully engineered to deliver exceptional hookup on hard-packed surfaces, providing both traction and superb launch capabilities. The Rattler is also designed to reduce bounce and enhance high-speed control for a smoother, more predictable ride. Rattler tires come in eight different sizes to fit a variety of vehicles and wheels. Ranging from four-ply to six-ply construction, the Rattler tire is also built for durability even on difficult terrain. ■

BRAKE PADS
The Sintered-Metallic Difference
Upgraded Braking for Everything in Powersports
Whether it’s on the street, track or trail, DP Brakes has the direct-fit, replacement, upgrade sinteredmetallic brake pads for it. There are options for everyone from recreational riders to professional racers.
T
oday you’d be hard pressed to find a motorcycle, ATV or UTV that doesn’t have disc brakes. It wasn’t always that way. It took the powersport industry decades to catch up to the improved performance of disc brakes, a technology developed as early as 1902 and first widely implemented in aircraft applications by Dunlop Aviation in the 1940s. Dunlop further improved disc-brake performance in the 1950s with the introduction of sintered-metallic brake pads, a major step up from the organic friction materials of the time. Those sintered-metallic pads worked so well and the braking performance was so strong, especially in wet-weather conditions, that the British government commissioned Dunlop to incorporate sintered-metallic technology into motorcycle applications. Thus DP Brakes was born, the sintered-metallic originator and the only manufacturer in the motorcycle market that concentrates 100 percent of its production on sinteredmetallic pads. As expected from a company so laser focused, DP Brakes has sintered-metallic brake pads for every application in powersport. If it has disc brakes – motorcycle, ATV or UTV – DP has the upgrade/performance sintered-metallic brake pads for it. More than that, those sintered-metallic pads are offered in a number of friction-level formulations, each custom blended for the application and intended use. action, for recreational use or professional racing, DP Brakes has the direct-fit, replacement, upgrade sinteredmetallic brake pads for it. The lineup starts with DP Standards, sintered pads blended for excellent all-round braking performance hot or cold, wet or dry. In the street applications they’re an excellent choice for everyday commuter, cruiser, touring, sport, and Adventure use. There are also SDP Sport HH+ formulations, sintered-metallic pads developed for the more performance-oriented rider. These pads deliver the high level of performance demanded in fast road riding and track-day action. And standing at the top of all this are DP’s RDP X-Race Titaniums, sintered-metallic pads developed especially for closed-course road racing. These special-use brake pads meet and exceed the demands of top-level national and international superstars and factory race teams. DP’s sintered-metallic compound choices extend throughout the application-lineup for off-roading, too. Once again it starts with the DP Standards. Providing excellent braking in all conditions, they’re an all-around great choice for dirt and dual-sport motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs. For more serious off-roading, including motocross racing at its highest levels, DP offers the SDP Pro-MX pads. Parts Unlimited has all of this, including those top-level DP racing pads used by world champions, the RDP X-Race Titaniums and the SDP Pro-MX. They’re also quiet with no squeaks or squeals, they’re dust-free clean in operation and feature an exclusive ceramic heat shield bonded onto the backing plates that protect against fade during even the hardest, hottest use. Flow and Function
Introducing the Tech 10 Supervented
A
lpinestars’ Tech 10 has been the definitive motocross boot for more than half a decade. Now the performance and protection envelope has been raised even higher with the creation of the Tech 10 Supervented, a boot that further advances the innovations of an already highly technical motocross boot. The Alpinestars technical footwear development team focused on four priorities in designing the Tech 10 Supervented – improve overall functionality, improve performance and safety, decrease weight and reduce material volume, and allow for high levels of cooling airflow. Featuring two inlet ports on the front, a ventilated shinplate, perforated padding and extensive mesh sections, the Tech 10 Supervented has been designed for maximum airflow through the boot’s front, and effective heat exchange. The new mesh inner bootie boasts a 3D Higher Spring insole that uses air channels within the sole for optimal levels of ventilation, while also creating a cushioning effect for enhanced levels of comfort. There is also a new sole with an extended honeycomb design for superior grip and feel on the bike’s pegs, especially in wet and muddy conditions. Of course, the Tech 10 Supervented offers the same performance as the standard Tech 10 boot, which includes allowing for a great range of movement and flexibility and effective control over the flexion and torsion forces that significantly improve boot performance, giving the rider greater confidence and protection. A key innovative feature of the Tech 10 Supervented is the patented Frontal Flexion Control Frame. Combining with the dual front and the rear blade connectors, the frame acts as a shock absorber by distributing energy across the boot frame while controlling forward and rearward flex. This gives the Tech 10 Supervented boot a complete and seamless flexion control system, from the footshell all the way up to the shin plate, which offers high performance double motion control, and prevents over-compression and hyper-extension. Another unique aspect of the Tech 10 Supervented is the ankle control system, which is integrated in the outer shell to allow natural ankle movement, vertical compression control and improved flex control and impact resistance. This is complemented by the new inner ankle brace and the unique heel protection innovation, the patented Dynamic Heel Compression Protector. This significantly reduces the effect of excessive, potentially injury-causing, energy being transferred to the ankle and lower leg. ■

Strong, Reliable OEM Replacement Sprockets
W
hen a customer comes in looking for an OEM replacement rear sprocket, chances are good that there’s already a Sunstar steel sprocket on their bike. Sunstar has been partnering with motorcycle manufacturers for nearly 60 years to produce OEM rear sprockets. That means that when it is time for a new one, a Sunstar steel OEM replacement is likely to be an identical swap. Sunstar designs its steel sprockets to be strong, durable and reliable. The company achieves this by starting with extremely high-quality 1045 carbon steel, which is given Sunstar’s exclusive heat treatment for added strength and wear resistance. Many of the rear sprockets also feature zinc plating that is applied via a baked-on durable paint process. That extra layer increases the sprocket’s ability to resist corrosion so that it lasts even longer. This feature is especially valuable in sprockets designed for off-road applications which have to be able to withstand not just water but plenty of dirt and mud, too.
Sunstar steel OEM replacement sprockets are built for tough use and have fitments for offroad and on-road machines.
Sunstar has an extensive list of applications for its steel OEM rear sprockets for both street and off-road bikes, another one of the benefits of Sunstar’s OEM relationships. Getting the power from the motor to the rear wheel is Sunstar’s business, which means that the company also produces high-performance sprockets, countershaft sprockets, chains and complete chain kits for street and off-road riding. In addition to working with OEMs, Sunstar is also heavily involved in motorsports, giving the company a firm foothold in both worlds. ny company that wants to make a premium product needs to begin with high-end production facilities and materials. Wössner has long held this view, putting a strong emphasis on in-house forging and manufacturing to ensure top quality for its off-road engine components. The German company knows that it is also important to stay up to date with the latest in technology. Wössner began as an importer and distributor of pistons, but the best way to ensure quality, precision and performance is to make them in-house, where it is easy to oversee every step of the process. Wössner has been producing high-performance forged pistons since the 1990s, and more recently, the company moved into a brand-new headquarters to keep up with the demand for its products. This new facility in Weil am Rhein, Germany, is larger and more modern than its predecessor. The increased size and updated technology allow Wössner to produce about three times the number of pistons annually compared to the previous facility. Making such a big upgrade is no small undertaking, and Wössner has invested 7 million Euro during the past two years to

In addition to its German headquarters, Wössner also has its own 5,000-square-meter forging facility in Italy so that the piston forging process can be carefully controlled to ensure quality and accuracy. A Chain for the Ages

here’s not a lot that’s harder on a motorcycle chain than enduro terrain, and for more than 100 years Regina has been striving for the best combination of durability and performance. The latest to come out of Regina’s headquarters in northern Italy is the 520 ZSE. The ZSE’s Z-ring flexes into place as the chain is assembled, creating a spring effect that keeps a strong seal over time, trapping lubricant between the plates to reduce friction and keep the chain running smoothly. The result is a light-running chain, giving riders the advantage of sapping less power in the drivetrain and a competitive edge on the track. Crucially, the Z-ring’s low profile allows the ZSE to be built to a narrow spec. Even with the security and longevity of the seal, the ZSE’s width is within half a millimeter of some unsealed chains, and that means that the ZSE can be used on machines where a normal O-ring chain might not fit. Regina made sure to apply its knowledge and experience to the rest of the chain’s pieces, too. The plates on the

ZSE are high-carbon alloy steel, shot-peened and gold colored, with solid bushings and high-quality materials used throughout. pgrading an off-road bike from stock brake rotors to an oversize kit is a cinch with Galfer USA’s fullfloating and solid-mount options. Galfer offers an enormous amount of applications for its two oversize dirtbike brake rotors. The floating oversize WAVE® rotor kit and the solid-mount SKW oversize front WAVE rotor are both great options for off-road, dual-sport and motocross use. Both rotor styles come with a sturdy but lightweight aluminum relocation bracket. By including the bracket, replacing the stock brake rotors with the oversize style is seamless, offering an instant upgrade in braking predictability and consistency. Innovative Tool Designs
I
nnovation isn’t something that only happens in the mind of a designer or on a drawing board. Bikeservice believes that innovation also comes from listening to customers’ needs and turning feedback into intuitive, easy-to-use motorcycle tools. Bikeservice collects feedback from both riders and professional mechanics, which allows the designers to refine the products in order to provide solutions that are accurate, efficient and convenient. Tools like the express chain install tool and the universal front fork seal driver are proof of this philosophy. Not only are both designed to be simple to understand and efficient to use, but they also work with a variety of chain and fork sizes. That means mechanics can service more bikes with fewer tools. The new express chain install tool allows the user to quickly assemble the chain. A removable press plate makes it easy to press the side plates onto the pins. By removing the plate, the tool can be used to rivet the hollow pin. This tool is suitable for most 50-series chains and O-ring chains, making it a versatile tool to have on hand.
Bikeservice’s express chain install tool allows users to quickly and easily assemble a chain.
Replacing dust and oil seals on forks is a snap thanks to the universal front fork seal driver.
The popular and patented Bikeservice universal front fork seal driver is specially designed to make it effortless to replace the dust and oil seals on forks with a diameter from 30mm up to 50mm. Spring-loaded slides clamp around the fork to keep it securely in place while the seals are replaced. The driver is so easy to use that Bikeservice says it can be operated with just one hand. ■
