s you read this, the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship series is just getting restarted after a planned three-week Spring Break. The final run for the 2021 titles begins with a three-race series in Atlanta, then on to Salt Lake City for two final races. In the 250 class, the THOR-clad Star Racing Yamaha team currently leads the way in both the East and West divisions. Justin Cooper, Colt Nichols and Christian Craig are surely looking forward to a head-tohead battle in the final race to see who will claim the bragging rights as this year’s top point scorer of Bobby Regan’s highly talented 250 Supercross team. In the 450 class, another Parts Unlimited / THOR-sponsored rider, Cooper Webb, stormed perfectly thru the recent three-race series in Arlington, Texas to build a 15-point lead in the season points. He still has five races to go to finish it out for the 2021 450 title, but at the moment no other rider is running as strong for the full distance of the Main events. Webb isn’t the only Parts Unlimited rider in THOR gear having a great season, by the way. In fact, half the riders in the top ten in the 450 class are wearing THOR as the series works its way to Salt Lake City. For a report on how the season is going for other THOR and Moose riders in GNCC, Enduro, WORCS and other series, check out our story starting on page 48. And best of luck to all Parts Unlimited riders for a successful conclusion of the 2021 season.

See page 16 - Special Section on E-bikes Shifting gears—so to speak. Parts Unlimited’s addition of the INTENSE e-MTBs and Strider Sports bicycles has exceeded expectations, expanding the scope of two-wheel recreation being served thru your Parts Unlimited sales reps and catalogs. And for our dealers north of the border, Parts Canada has them coming soon as well! Starting on page 16 in this issue, we feature a special section all about bicycles with a focus on many news items featured in the newly updated Parts Unlimited Bicycle catalog. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to bring a whole new segment of off-road recreation into your store. ■

NEWS EVENTS A Perfect Season KYLE PETERS – 2021 KICKER AMA ARENACROSS CHAMPION

P

erfect seasons are rare in sports and almost unheard of in racing. Phoenix Honda/Moose Racing rider Kyle Peters put one in the record books this season with 20 races and 20 victories to win every event of the 2021 KICKER AMA Arenacross Series. Due to the impact of Covid-19, the series schedule underwent a number of changes but in the end it featured five venues and 10 rounds, each of which included main events for both 250 Pro Sport and 450 Pro Sport. The 24-year-old Peters was perfect, winning 10 events in the 250 Pro Sport class and 10 events in the 450 Pro Sport class, clinching the championship in the process by a remarkable margin of 107 points. “It was truly an incredible season,” Peters said. “I’m still a bit speechless with it all! I’m so thankful for the whole Phoenix Honda team, we put in so much time and effort into this season and it’s so awesome to see it all pay off! Everything is really coming together and I feel better than I ever have. I’m stoked to get my second Arenacross championship and be able to go undefeated! Also, a huge thank you to all my family, girlfriend and friends for always supporting me!” Peters has always had the talent and a strong dedication to his sport, but some bad luck and injuries have held him back for the last few seasons. This year, he has been healthy and injury-free. He also stepped up his pre-season training and dove deeply into testing and bike prep with the Phoenix Honda team. One of Peter’s major sponsors is Parts Unlimited/Moose Racing and they are more than pleased with his perfect season. “Kyle has been super easy to work with,” said Carl van Niekerk of Moose Racing’s Pro Rider Services. “He is so grounded and humble. It is refreshing as he is a very high-profile athlete.

Honda/Moose Racing rider Kyle Peters scored a perfect season to clinch the 2021 KICKER AMA Arenacross Championship.

I have been working with Kyle for two years now, and this year he has found an extra gear and stepped up. Kyle favors the Sahara line of Moose Racing gear and, although we tried various different styles, Sahara has been on the top step of the podium with him a number of times this year. As you know, he went undefeated in Arenacross and we are so proud to be part of his program.” Just because the KICKER AMA Arenacross series has crowned Peters the 2021 Champion, that doesn’t mean his racing season is over. Peters is now focusing his efforts on the 250 West Supercross Series and has already scored a podium finish at the Arlington 2 Supercross round in Texas. Peters’ third-place finish put that Moose Racing gear on the boxes of the big Supercross stage for the first time this season. So, what is next for Kyle Peters? He’ll race the rest of the Supercross Series in the 250 West class and then probably hit the Outdoor National MX Series. Kyle has a two-year deal with Phoenix Honda and as Phoenix is one of the Moose Racing’s teams he will be with Moose Racing again for 2022. Join us in congratulating Kyle Peters on a perfect KICKER AMA Arenacross season and championship, and watch for Peters on the #56 Phoenix Honda wearing Moose Racing gear in the remaining 250 Supercross West series. ■

In scoring a perfect season for the KICKER AMA Arenacross series, Honda/Moose Racing rider Kyle Peters won 10 events in the 250 Pro Sport class and 10 events in the 450 Pro Sport class, nailing down the championship by an incredible 107-point margin.

Ordering is expected to start this Spring, so Parts Canada dealers looking to add this fast-moving segment to their dealership’s portfolio should contact their sales rep. For those looking to jump in, know that becoming a Canadian E-bike dealer makes sound business sense. The NPD Group (Canada) shows that in August 2020 E-bike sales were up 190 percent. While the pandemic may have accelerated the growth rate, the popularity of the genre is evident on trails and roads around the world. Established in Temecula, California in 1991 by CEO Jeff Steber, the INTENSE brand has always had a close relationship with the motocross community. Many of the innovative influences that Steber built into his first mountainbike frames, such as front and rear suspensions, came from off-road motorcycles. Some of the brand’s first fans and riders include extreme sports athletes. When the idea to develop an eMTB was conceived, INTENSE followed its development history and the Tazer MX was built in the same way the company’s first mountain bike was built – from the ground up. The goal? To make an e-Bike that wasn’t cumbersome, had a seamless pedal-to-power transition and delivered a true mountain bike experience.

Tazer MX Pro model

The Tazer MX is also designed to be well-suited for the powersports market and have a high crossover appeal with off-road riders and other motorcyclists. Not only is the bike outfitted with products from familiar companies – Magura brakes, Maxxis tires, ODI grips, Öhlins suspension, and Renthal handlebars – it can also be upgraded with replacement parts. The Tazer MX is a Class 1 E-bike – a pedal-assist electric bike with a max assisted speed of 32 km/h. When a rider pedals, a motor engages to give the bike a power boost. This allows riders the freedom to mix trails and downhill rides, and to explore new territory that may be out of reach on a traditional mountain bike. ■

BICYCLE CATALOG EXPANDS WITH NEW VENDORS, MORE PRODUCTS

A

ll it takes is a trip to your local dedicated bike path or outdoor trail system to know that bicycling is booming. Key among that surge in biking is the increasing popularity of electricassist bikes, or E-bikes. While bicycle sales were up 65 percent in 2020 — fueled in large part by pandemic-related stay-at-home orders and an attendant increase in outdoor activities — the sales of E-bikes jumped up 145 percent compared to 2019. The figures from market research firm NPD Group were reported in a New York Times article in March. Or course, this is not news to Parts Unlimited dealers, many of whom were eager to embrace the E-bike market when parent company LeMans Corporation jumped into the eMTB space in 2020. The addition of the powersports-specific INTENSE Taxer MX eMTB range and the launch of an E-bike parts and accessories line has been a huge success. Capitalizing on that bicycling boom and expanding on its groundbreaking entry into the E-bike market in 2020, the LeMans Corporation is doubling the size of the second edition of its 2021 Bicycle catalog and increasing its lineup of E-bike vendors and the breadth of available products.

That newer, fatter catalog now features Crankbrothers footwear, pedals and tools, Fizik saddles, Flat Tire Defender products, and Tektro tools and brake products. LeMans has also expanded the offerings from existing lines by adding part numbers from Acerbis, DP, Galfer, INTENSE, Maxxis, Muc-Off, and Ram Mounts. The overall goal? Offering a high level of support and service to those powersports dealers operating in the eMTB business, the same exemplary support that Parts Unlimited has given its dealers since the get-go, says Jeff Derge, LeMans Corporation VP of Sales and Marketing. “It’s a new segment with a new opportunity, and I think it’s one that is not only here to stay, but to also grow,” Derge adds. “It’s no different than what we do for a UTV or a motorcycle buyer, we want to be a one-stop shop for all dealers and their E-bike needs. That’s what Fred Fox has been doing since the beginning.” By offering the two INTENSE Tazer MX models — the Pro and the Expert — as well as a broad supply of parts, apparel and accessories, dealers can serve all of their customers’ needs, whether they’re dedicated downhill mountain bike rippers or new to the E-bike market. Those customers can leave the store with everything

from helmets, riding apparel and shoes to specialty tools, tires and replacement parts. If they need to clean, shine and lube a bike after a day of off-road fun? Yep, that 2021 Volume #2 Bicycle catalog has them covered. The expanded product offering coincides with an increase in the number of Parts Unlimited dealers who recognize that the E-bike market isn’t just a smart new profit center, it’s also an investment in the future of the powersports riding public. While some dealers are carving out eMTB sections of their parts departments, others are doubling-down and expanding their E-bike offerings into dedicated facilities, Derge says. While the E-bike market is still a relatively new phenomenon here in the U.S., there’s always been some crossover between mountain biking and road cycling within the powersports market. It’s estimated that 80 percent of off-road enthusiasts also ride mountain or road bicycles, while many racers and serious riders of all disciplines incorporate some type of cycling into their training. And, as the numbers have shown over the past year, cycling in general has seen an infusion of new and returning riders, many of whom are throwing a leg over an E-bike for the very first time. Parts Unlimited and the new expanded range of parts, garments and accessories helps meet the needs of any of these new or “new again” riders.

PARTS MAGAZINE

M AY 2 0 2 1

Another strong feature of the E-bike market is that it expands the range of available riding areas beyond what is possible with a dirtbike or dual-sport machine. Riding a Class 1 E-bike like the Tazer MX offers an electric pedal-assist that that gives a max assisted speed of 20 mph, the perfect boost that can allow riders to push their limits while out on the trails, either by going further or faster. And, with many states treating these bikes like traditional mountain or pavement bikes, they’re usually allowed anywhere a regular bike is permitted. In many cases, customers will be able to access trails close to their homes, rather than loading up a bike to make a trip somewhere. “The bike segment is important to the industry as a whole as it’s offering another entry point into the market,” Derge says. “It also offers an option for newcomers to the powersports market who might want to start off on an E-bike before throwing a leg over a traditional motorcycle or an existing customer who is transitioning out of motorcycles, but still wants to enjoy two wheels. We’re expanding the entire range of vehicle product offers in the powersports market. It’s no different than when UTVs came into the market. It’s a new segment with a new opportunity and we’re here to service that opportunity.” ■

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT

A Wide Range of E-Bike Tools

E

-bikes are unique machines and they require some unique equipment to maintain them. Thankfully, Parts Unlimited carries tools from legendary cycle brands Topeak and Crankbrothers including stands, tools, pumps, and more. Let’s take a look at some of the most appealing and useful offerings Parts Unlimited has available in its new 2021 Bicycle catalog.

Stands Nobody really likes working on the ground when it comes to maintenance and repairs, so a quality bike stand is the way to go. Topeak has two to choose from, including the Prepstand eUp, which has a pressurized cartridge that provides 37½ pounds of lifting force to help hoist up heavy E-bikes. The Prepstand eUp would make a great addition to your shop area or your DIY customer’s garage, and takes away the extra work of lifting a new generation E-bike into a traditional stand and securing it.

Pumps From smooth-rolling, high-pressure road tires to chunky off-road rubber, Crankbrothers and Topeak have a variety of pumps to fit your customers’ needs. For everyday use, the Gem floor pump or Klic pump from Crankbrothers are a good fit. The Gem has sturdy steel construction, and can be switched between high volume and high pressure. The Klic has an attractive slim design with a hidden, integrated hose with magnetic retention, plus a large digital pressure gauge. For tubeless applications, Topeak’s JoeBlow Booster is a great choice. This pump acts like an air compressor with its 1-liter air chamber. Pressurize it up to 160 PSI and release all the air at once to help seat difficult tires fast. From there, the JoeBlow behaves like a normal pump, with a topmounted gauge, comfortable grip, and extra-long hose.

Topeak’s Prepstand Pro is at home in the shop or at the track, and features an anodized aluminum construction with a rotating, no-mar clamp head. A clever feature of the Prepstand Pro is an integrated digital scale that allows users to weigh individual parts or complete bikes up to 55 pounds.

Tools Whether for your store’s shop or your customers’ garages, the Topeak Prepbox tool kit is a veritable workshop in a box. With 36 professional-quality tools packed in one sturdy and well-organized carrying case, the Prepbox is an excellent foundation for any DIYer. Topeak’s Prepstand Pro The Prepstand eUP provides an assist of 37½ pounds of lifting force for hoisting up heavy E-bikes.

Crankbrothers Speedier tire lever tackles tire removal and installation with just one lever. One end levers the old tire off while the other end helps you smoothly slide the new tire’s bead over the rim shoulder. The Speedier lever also integrates a guard that helps protect knuckles from injury. From tires to forks and shocks, plenty of items on E-bikes require specific pressures. For that, Topeak’s Smartgauge D2 is a tool to grab. This second-generation digital gauge features a rotating head that works seamlessly with Presta and Schrader valves and it can handle up to 250 PSI. Finally, there’s Topeak’s Torq Stick torque wrench. Anyone who’s invested in an E-bike will appreciate the precision with which the Torq Stick allows them to accurately tighten crucial fasteners. With an adjustable torque range from 2 to 10 Nm, the Torq Stick is ideal for use on bicycles.

Crankbrothers M20 multitool

Tire Repair Flats are a fact of life, so set your customers up for success with a Crankbrothers Cigar Tool or Topeak Tubi Master tool. Both kits include tubeless plugs, a reamer, installation tool and CO2 cartridge adapters and can easily be mounted to a bike’s frame for convenience. Crankbrothers also offers CO2 bulk packs to help keep your shelves stocked and your customers ready to air up the next time they get a flat. ■

Trail Tools Both Topeak and Crankbrothers have a variety of compact, multi-functional tools that are designed to be carried on the bike for use on the trail. Two high-quality setups are Topeak’s Mini PT30 and the Crankbrothers M20. Both the Mini PT30 and M20 boast all the hex and Torx bits a rider could need, plus tire levers, a chain breaker, screwdrivers and spoke wrenches – the tire repair tools include a reamer and plug installer. The Crankbrothers M20 even includes five plugs that are stored in a slim case that affixes to the tool. Slightly smaller but still indispensable, the Topeak Hexus X, and the F15 and M17 tools from Crankbrothers pack a lot of capability into small packages. Each one works with a range of bicycles.

The Vector Tech Polar helmet is MIPS equipped; MIPS is the brain protection system that utilizes a low friction layer that allows a sliding motion in all directions to help reduce the rotational motion transmitted to the brain during an impact, thus reducing the risk of brain injuries. Ventilation is another key design detail of the Vector Tech Polar helmet. Its 19 openings, complete with reinforced air scoop at the front, deliver significant cooling airflow for optimal performances, even in the harshest conditions.

preparation and construction of the helmet has been rigorously analyzed to guarantee the helmet is lightweight, but still delivers in terms of energy absorption: the Vector Tech Polar Helmet weighs 390g in a medium size. Other design features include reinforcing cages embedded in the rigid frame for added strength, a quick release chin strap and a fully adjustable dial sizing system. There’s also a washable, replaceable and breathable comfort liner with quick-dry fabric. An adjustable visor can be tilted forwards for enhanced vision when riding uphill and has space to facilitate the storage of goggles. The Vector Tech helmet is equally well designed, and is identical to the Vector Tech, but weighs just 370g, due to it not being MIPS-equipped. Both the Vector Tech and Vector Pro helmets are available in three shell sizes: S (51-55cm) / M (55-59cm) / L (59-63cm). Both helmets have been constructed, tested and approved in compliance with the European Standard EN 1078:2012+A1:2012. This Helmet also complies with the U.S. CPSC Safety Standard (CPSC 16 CFR 1203) and the Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 2063:2008. ■

LUBRICANTS & CHEMICALS

Clean, Lube, Ride, Repeat E-Bike Maintenance Products

E

-bikes like the Intense Tazer MX are gaining traction, and as your customers gear up to join in this exciting new genre they can turn to Maxima, a familiar chemical company for the chain lube, cleaner and fork fluid they need to maintain their new bikes. Maxima is highly regarded in the powersports industry, and in the cycling world as well. In fact, Maxima has been operating in the bicycle market for more than two decades with top manufacturers, and Maxima has a complete menu of chemicals to meet your customer’s needs.

Chain Pro is an ultra-clean lube that’s great for use in dusty conditions.

When things get wet and muddy, point your customers to Maxima’s Chain Guard, an oil-based lube for thorough chain maintenance.

One of Maxima’s popular sellers is Chain Pro chain lube, which is a unique product developed to suit the needs of bicycle drivetrains. Chain Pro is an ultra-clean lube that’s great for use in dusty conditions. With PTFE as the primary lubricant, Chain Pro promotes smooth shifting under load, quiets chain noise and reduces friction for improved driveline life. It’s recommended that your customers overapply and then wipe off the excess to ensure the best penetration and protection. If your customers are mashing through rain, mud or even snow, Chain Guard is a great choice for keeping those links happy. This oil-based lube shares the same name as its popular powersports peer, but features a unique formulation free of tackifiers and with a more robust solvent carrier to help penetrate the chain to coat the pins and bushings. When there’s no telling what the weather will do, Maxima’s Chain Wax is a good choice. It offers more water repellency than Chain Pro and is cleaner than Chain Guard. Featuring a paraffin wax base and a strong heptane carrier agent, Chain Wax should be shaken before application and allowed to set up for a few minutes. If your customers ride in mixed conditions or just want to have one lube for every season, Chain Wax is a great choice.

Maxima’s Chain Wax is a great choice for a variety of conditions and terrain.

When the ride is over and it’s time to clean up, Maxima’s Bio-Wash is a great option for your customers. This product is a direct carryover from the powersports lineup, because there was no way to make it more effective! Bio-Wash is a unique, 100 percent biodegradable all-purpose cleaner that lifts away dirt and dissolves grime. Bio-Wash is tough on dirt, yet gentle enough to use on delicate surfaces including paint, plastic, rubber, carbon fiber, and titanium. After the ride, Bio-Wash is a biodegradable all-purpose cleaner that’s tough on dirt, but gentle on a range of surfaces and materials.

Finally, there’s Maxima’s lineup of Plush fork oils, offered in 3, 5, 7, and 10 weights. Plush was developed from the ground up specifically for bicycles and offers consistent damping performance and excellent lubrication for bushings and stanchions. ■

Performance Brake Components for E-Bikes

Known for its highquality powersports brake products, Galfer also covers the rapidly growing E-bike/eMTB market with brake pads and rotors built for the rigors of downhill mountain biking.

M

ost dealers are already familiar with the name Galfer and the company’s braking products for both street and off-road vehicles. From UTVs to V-Twins, Galfer gives a broad range of powersports vehicles a big boost in braking performance. Galfer also has a robust brake line for bicycles, and right now Galfer especially has its sights on E-bikes. The E-bike segment is rapidly growing, which is a trend seen across the bicycle market in general. In addition to its aftermarket bicycle products, Galfer is also an OEM manufacturer for several companies, including Orbea, Hope and Magura. Whether it’s OEM or aftermarket, every part is manufactured at Galfer’s headquarters in Barcelona, Spain. By keeping everything in-house, Galfer is able to oversee every step of the process, from the drawing board to the packaged product. Galfer has an impressive history in powersports competition, and the company has helped a lot of riders bring home championships. Now, that expertise is being applied to the Galfer bicycle division, too, sponsoring teams and riders in the E-MTB World Championship, downhill mountain biking, cyclocross and other disciplines. Parts Unlimited is now stocking Galfer brake pads and brake rotors for E-bikes. There are two styles of brake pads that E-bike customers can choose from, including the E-bike and Pro compounds.

30

PARTS MAGAZINE

M AY 2 0 2 1

Easy to spot with their purple color, the E-bike brake pads are designed – just as their name implies – specifically for use on E-bikes. Since E-bikes typically have a higher weight and increased speed compared to a standard bicycle, the pad compound is designed to resist high temperatures and to manage heat efficiently. That is especially important when the added weight and speed are combined with the braking required for downhill riding. Galfer recommends the E-bike brake pads for racers or riders who want a more aggressive brake pad. Durability and absence of noise are two of the other attributes of this pad. The other Galfer brake pad available from Parts Unlimited is the Pro mountain bike pad. Designed for competition, this brake pad is ideal for the absolute harshest of riding conditions. Whether it is extreme terrain or extreme weather, the Pro brake pad is ready for it. Wet weather and mud are no problem, and the pad is especially beneficial in downhill riding. The brakes remain steady and resist fading to provide optimal performance and confidence. The Galfer WAVE® rotor is already a staple of the powersports industry, and it also finds itself at home in the world of E-bikes. Parts Unlimited stocks both a standard-sized 203mm floating WAVE brake rotor as well as an oversized 223mm fixed WAVE rotor.

GALFER

Galfer’s products are just as eye-catching as they are functional. Its distinct, purple E-bike brake pads are designed for the heavier weight and greater speed of an E-bike. The WAVE rotor is equally as effective, providing outstanding performance, even under extreme conditions.

The two rotor designs share a number of qualities, with the most obvious being the WAVE pattern, which keeps braking systems cooler by allowing air to pass over every point of the brake pad surface. Each high-carbon stainless steel rotor is laser-cut and double-disc parallel ground, which results in extremely accurate rotors and perfect parallel flatness. The result of all of these features is outstanding performance even under aggressive braking situations. An anti-corrosion treatment keeps the noncontact surfaces in pristine condition.

The 203mm WAVE rotor features a full-floating design to prevent warping. Because it is a direct replacement for the OEM rotor, this is an easy way to give a bike a big performance upgrade. The 223mm oversized WAVE rotor has a fixed-mount design, and it maintains the six-bolt universal mounting pattern to make mounting simpler. Galfer also has caliper adapter brackets available for E-bike models that require one. ■

T

he booming eMTB market means the E-bike tire business is booming, as well, as a growing number of enthusiasts look for tires that accommodate the particular needs of electric and traditional mountain bikes. The Michelin® E-Wild tires perform best when combined as an optimized front and rear fitment. Designed to increase battery life, tire longevity and power transmission, this tire will help any eMTB rider get the most out of any trail. hroughout the years, RK Chain and Excel Rims have consistently been known for their reliability, strength and performance. From past to present champions, riders such as Zach Osborne of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing and Kailub Russel of FMF KTM Factory Racing, rely on RK Excel’s legendary strength and durability. The products that the professional race teams and riders use are the same products available to consumers through Parts Unlimited dealers.

RK 520MXU Sealed Extreme elements call for extreme chains. When conditions turn muddy, sandy or wet, or if riders just want a chain that provides consistent horsepower delivery from the start of a race to the end, RK offers a sealed Supercross, motocross and off-road racing chain called MXU. RK’s GB520MXU features ultra-thin UW-seals, which are perfect for bikes with narrow clearance. They also deliver triple the life expectancy over a non-sealed chain. RK’s UW-Ring seals utilize triple barrier grease protection as well as anti-debris technology. This anti-debris protection is important to maximize chain wear life by eliminating friction between internal components. RK’s UW seals also feature small contact points to reduce cold start drag. The UW ring thickness is 50 percent thinner, and has 65 percent less friction than O-ring chains, RK claims. The GB520MXU has a maximum tensile strength of 8,000 foot pounds and weighs just over 3 pounds per 100 links making MXU a lightweight chain. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Zach Osborne relies on RK’s MXU chain to get him on the podium even in the most grueling of conditions. RK’s GB520MXU chain is designed to perform in even the most extreme riding conditions.

Excel A60 Rims Excel’s flagship rim is the Excel A60 Rim, which was developed specifically for professional Supercross and motocross racing applications. The Excel A60 Rims are 15 percent stronger than current Excel Takasago Rims, and feature a V-curve profile to help mud slide off the rim better, helping reduce rotating wheel mass. 38

In this special report from Chris Landers, he personally chronicles the integral role Moose Racing and Parts Unlimited has played in the team’s journey: The Landers family found a love for off-road racing along with the opportunity to carve memories with the boys that will last a lifetime. The sport has certainly afforded that to us over the years. Today we look back and realize how soon tomorrow gets here and ask the question, “Where did the time go?”

In the beginning, like most do, we started with a Suzuki 50 quad and KTM Jr. 50, traveling all over the country to race and have those after-race, driving home talks. Looking back, those times are the most memorable ones that you often wish you could return to. Today, 15 years later, Drew races XC1 Pro Quad and Chase races YXC1 bikes, so, as the journey continues, we are still loving what we do and are out chasing dreams, goals and more. In late 2018, the LanMillsXC team was established to race the 2019 GNCC season, covering classes from youth up to the pro classes. The efforts in building a team were our steps to try to build a business around something we love to do. LanMills is in the packaging solutions business, and we find that we try not to overlook opportunities and often look for them. In August 2019, I was approached about a need for Parts Unlimited and Moose Racing to have a trackside event sales program. In that conversation I quickly said yes and soon asked, “How do we get this going?” From that point, XC Parts Solutions quickly sprouted and covered 28 events in 2020, including GNCC, Pro Motocross, Mini Os, FTRs and locals, along with operating a local shop in Monterey, Tennessee. Products ranged from boots, helmets,

Rising Through the Ranks From family bonding to racing business gear, goggles, lubricants, and hard parts to eventually carrying, selling and servicing Intense E-bikes. Each weekend we strive to have the racers’ needs met along with a drop-ship order option right from the track and pre-ordering by Wednesday before an event weekend to meet racers with their parts at the track. At the end of 2020, things changed a bit for the LanMillsXC team as we were able to sign Jordan Ashburn, the number three overall GNCC racer. At what seemed to be the same time, the opportunity surfaced for us to sign up to be the Factory Husqvarna Support team. We now had an XC1 Pro Quad (Drew Landers) and a youth team (Chase Landers, YXC1, Brayden Baisley, 85 7-11) along with XC1 (Jordan Ashburn), XC2 (Brody Johnson) and XC3 (Jonathan Johnson) riders.

The trackside event program has a constant flow of Moose Racing customers.

All seemed to be moving well in getting Husqvarna Factory Support team LanMillsXC in position and ready for the number three pro spot and all that comes with it. Then, in late December, an opportunity and a business deal became even more real, with the Landers family acquiring a title sponsor for LanMillsXC. Today, beginning the 2021 season, we are Magna1 Motorsports Husqvarna, racing in GNCC, NEPG, Extreme Hard Enduro and other series. Magna1 is a performance oil company that has a focus in the racing families of many disciplines. Along with Magna1 Motorsports Pro Team, we continue to work trackside with parts support from Parts Unlimited and Moose Racing through dealer and vendor XC Outfitters. XC Outfitters, along with supplying the demand for trackside parts support, also sponsors a racing team consisting of Alli Phillips (WXC Pro), Ty Scheels (250B) and Randall Zierden (150C).

Jordan Ashburn is off to a solid start in the XC1 class.

Fifteen years of building a business, all starting from the after-race, driving home talks, and we didn’t even realize the doors we were walking through at the time. The favorite part the sport is the opportunity to race and find success in all wins and losses! ■

ometimes, sticking to just one style of riding isn’t enough. Adventure riding means having the choice of staying on the paved roads or taking the path less traveled, and tires have to be capable in both scenarios. Avon Tyres gets Adventure riders wherever their mood or the map may lead with two dual-sport tire ranges. The TrailRider Adventure sport tire is for those riders who primarily stick to the asphalt, but like to keep their options open, while the TrekRider tire is for riders who like to split their time between road and trail. Designed for 85 percent on-road and 15 percent off-road use, the TrailRider Adventure sport tire is for dual-sport motorcycles like the BMW GS, Honda XT, Suzuki V-Strom, Triumph Explorer and Super Moto bikes. Avon engineers developed a new super-rich silica compound for the TrailRider to ensure that wet grip would be outstanding without sacrificing mileage. The rear tires also feature a triple-compound construction, which further improves the mileage and grip. The center of the tire has a durable medium compound that improves mileage, a soft shoulder compound offers maximum grip at high lean angles and a low-hysteresis compound that runs beneath the other two bonds the top compounds to the tire carcass. Avon used 3D Sipes for the TrailRider. These interlocking three-dimensional points are embedded in the sipes, and while they might be hidden, their effect is easy to notice. They improve both stability and grip, reduce tire flex, and allow the tire to warm up quickly.

3D Sipes also help expel water efficiently, and they combine with the silica-rich compound to provide confidence-inspiring traction in the wet. In all, the TrailRider tires give Adventure sport riders a responsive ride and enhanced traction, both on-road and off-road. Parts Unlimited stocks seven front fitments and 13 rear fitments. The Avon Tyres TrekRider is the tire choice for dual-sport and Adventure riders who want the even split between on-road and off-road use. The enhanced cross-ply carcass construction results in excellent high-speed stability on the road but enough compliance for off-road riding. The specially formulated rubber compound optimizes grip on wet or dry roads and boosts traction in the dirt. The TrekRider tires can tackle light to medium-difficulty trails as well as mud and gravel, yet they remain stable, smooth and quiet on asphalt. Beveled edges resist tearing from off-road hazards, and specially designed tread blocks and channels are adept at cutting through mud. Avon Tyres offers the TrekRider in three front and six rear fitments. One of those, the 150/70-18, is a new size designed to fit the Honda Africa Twin and Yamaha Ténéré. As with all Avon Tyres, these Adventure options are manufactured in the U.K. ■

From his first victory of 2021 at Orlando 1, Webb has found his stride in Supercross, soaring to a three-round sweep at the Arlington stop of the circuit. A hard tumble in the whoops during practice at Arlington 2 didn’t deter Webb; he was able to rebound for a dominant performance that evening. The Arlington sweep proved to be a pivotal point for the championship as the 2019 champion now sits atop the points standings as of press time.

In Monster Energy AMA Supercross, THOR riders continue to dominate the podium, with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team’s Cooper Webb fresh off a trifecta in Arlington and the Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team sitting atop the point standings in both 250SX East and West championships.

In the 250 division, the Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing Team has proven itself to be the rising star of 2021 Supercross. In the hotly contested 250SX West, THOR rider Justin Cooper finds himself with the red plate and a narrow advantage in the title chase. The championship is still wide

In the 250SX East championship, Star Racing Yamaha owner Bobby Regan finds himself with dueling teammates in Colt Nichols and Christian Craig. The duo has amassed five wins from seven rounds, and the THOR riders find themselves locked in a battle for the championship, well clear of the rest of the field. unlop Geomax tires have an impressive racing history. In fact, competition and racer feedback were invaluable aspects in Dunlop’s development of the full Geomax line of motocross and off-road tires. The Geomax MX33 is Dunlop’s most versatile tire in the lineup, and it is the tire of choice for soft to intermediate terrain. Dunlop worked with top motocross racers to develop this tire, and their input, combined with Dunlop’s innovative design and technologies, resulted in a tire with outstanding grip, slide control, bump absorption and durability. The Geomax MX33 tires feature Block-In-A-Block technology for better steering and linear tracking, and tie bars for reduced flex and updated compounds. In the rear tire, the tread is designed for improved grip, stability and slide control, and Multiple Block Distribution means there are more blocks in the tread pattern to increase the contact patch. Dunlop’s Carcass Tension Control System enables even flex throughout the tire to aid with bump absorption. The Dunlop Geomax MX53 is the tire of choice for intermediate to hard terrain, replacing the popular Geomax MX52. Like the Geomax MX33, the Geomax MX53 tires feature Block-In-A-Block technology for better steering and linear tracking, tie bars for reduced flex and new compounds for enhanced durability and longevity. The front tire got a big redesign; the profile is taller to offer a larger contact patch, and the tire blocks are one millimeter higher and redistributed to offer riders better steering feel and more biting edges. Additionally, the horseshoe pattern of blocks reduces stiffness in the center of the tire for greater ride compliance and improved braking grip.

Riders preparing for sandy or muddy conditions can opt for the Dunlop Geomax MX12. It is designed to provide increased cornering and acceleration grip, enhanced handling in ruts and increased bump control. The available sizes include options for minibikes, too.

The Geomax AT81 tires come in several configurations. The AT81 EX enduro tires have a super soft compound found in trials tires, providing grip on even the trickiest of surfaces. The AT81 RC has a reinforced carcass for maximum puncture protection. Dunlop’s racing involvement has resulted in a lot of accomplishments on the track. Dunlop riders have won every AMA Pro Motocross and Supercross championship since 2010, and Dunlop is the official tire of both American Flat Track and MotoAmerica. This year, Dunlop celebrates the 15th year of its amateur motocross support program, Team Dunlop Elite, which helps riders take the next step to a future professional racing career. Dunlop has a long history in amateur racing. In 2020 alone, riders on Dunlop Geomax tires won 32 titles at the Loretta Lynn’s amateur nationals, 84 titles at Mini Os, 37 titles at Ponca City and 32 titles at RCSX. ■

2021 Lineup Looks Forward and Back Vapor hydration pack

T

he basics of motocross and off-road are covered by THOR, and have been for some time. More and more, the company is reaching to improve on products meant for outdoor and Adventure use, with powersports at the epicenter. New for 2021 is a lineup of hydration packs in three different sizes; the Vapor (1½ liter), Hydrant (2 liter), and Reservoir (3 liter). All three use BPA-free bladders with threaded caps and an access port large enough to fit standard ice cubes, and the bladder compartments are

lined with neoprene insulation to keep fluids cool. Each of the packs has a sternum buckle to keep it secure as well as a waist strap, plus ventilated straps for comfort, and a magnetic clasp attached to the right shoulder strap to catch the bite-valve when the user isn’t hydrating on the go.

The Vapor pack is designed for small outings, compressing down to just ½ an inch when empty – it could be worn under a rain shell or overcoat if necessary. Even with the minimalist packaging, the Vapor uses the same quality materials as the larger packs and offers an easy-access external zippered pocket along with a micro-fleece lined pouch for glasses or delicate items. It’s an ideal companion for a short off-road ride or even a hike with friends. The Hydrant bumps up the storage capacity for longer or more serious adventures, while keeping the same foundational design of a simple, 2-liter hydration pack. An added internal mesh pocket helps with the organization of more things, whether the pack is off on a day ride or being used for an overnight trip.

The Reservoir is designed for the biggest missions and travels, with double the fluid capacity of the Vapor and the most room for other luggage. Multiple compartments and pockets are built around a 3-liter hydration bladder to carry everything necessary for an epic journey. Besides having room for bulkier items the Reservoir also features two large straps and buckles on the outside of the pack to strap additional luggage to the outside of the chassis. All of the packs feature a reflective THOR logo, a combination of 1200 and 600 denier ballistic polyester, and high-quality YKK reverse-set water-resistant zippers. On top of modern hydration and storage, THOR is also still producing history. Many people know the company’s moniker stands for Torsten Hallman Original

Racewear, named after the 4-time Motocross World Champion who founded the company in 1968. It was a time before the bright lights, factory semi-trucks, big contracts, and corporate sponsors, when there was simply a community of riders that shared a passion for dirt, grease, gas, oil, and bikes. The Hallman brand is meant to signify and be synonymous with those times.

THOR

Reservoir pack

THOR’s Hallman line connects the past and the present with a product line that embraces the original spirit and style while adopting new materials and craftsmanship that excel in today’s toughest conditions. Specifically, this is seen in the Tres collection, which features the snapback trucker hat and a 100 percent cotton T-shirt with multicolor Hallman logos. For those who want to take that fresh Hallman style out on the track or trail, there’s the Tres jersey, which offers a versatile fit and moisture-wicking material to help keep the rider dry. Four-way stretch panels are used in the cuffs and collar for added comfort, along with a heat-transfer neck label to avoid a pesky tag, and graphics that have been designed not to fade over time. ■

hen it comes to sport-touring, a rider needs performance and confidence in their tires no matter what the weather conditions might be. As much as riders dream of ticking off the miles under sunny skies and moderate temperatures, tires must be ready to tackle those inevitable times when the weather doesn’t go according to plan. Bridgestone had that in mind when designing the new Battlax Sport Touring T32 and T32 GT tires. Compared to its predecessor, the T32 tires offer riders increased performance in the wet, with significant improvements in features like grip, water evacuation and braking distance.

Bridgestone’s Battlax Sport Touring T32 tires When it comes to sport-touring, a rider needs performance and confidence in their tires no matter what the weather conditions might be. Bridgestone designed the new Battlax Sport Touring T32 and T32 GT tires to meet those needs.

As the successor to the Battlax T31 tires, the new T32 line benefits from construction and compound modifications that provide a shorter wet braking distance and a larger contact patch on the rear tire. In all, the T32 and T32 GT tires have outstanding handling capabilities in both dry and wet conditions, as well as excellent high speed, straight line and cornering stability. The Battlax Sport Touring T32 and T32 GT tires both feature Bridgestone’s state-of-the-art Pulse Groove Technology, which combines pulse-shaped grooves with small center deflectors. This design helps equalize the waterflow compared to a straight groove, which in turn optimizes the waterflow’s speed. This means the water is channeled and drained more efficiently while riding in wet conditions, increasing the tire’s grip and decreasing the slip ratio. Silica-rich compounds help improve grip, as well. The Battlax Sport Touring T32 rear tire has a 13 percent larger contact patch than its predecessor, which improves wet cornering grip, provides more adhesive area and improves contact feel in all riding conditions. 60

Battlax T32 GT

Stopping in the wet is more efficient with the T32 tire compared to the T31 tire, with a seven percent shorter wet braking distance. The shorter stopping distance doesn’t sacrifice the wear life of the tire either, so Bridgestone has been able to combine longevity with improved performance. Designed for heavier bikes, the Battlax Sport Touring T32 GT tire has a 10 percent improved wear life compared to the T31 GT tire. The T32 GT tire also has improved pattern stiffness which provides additional stability for middleweight and heavy motorcycles. In all, the differences between the T31 and the T32 tires are significant. New tread designs and rubber compounds plus a new shape for the rear tire are important contributors to the performance improvements. ■

Rossi and D.I.D Team Up

The Doctor Becomes the Ambassador part of a 3-year partnership that will help other riders find their own success. The partnership started in 2020, and D.I.D is pleased to have the legendary Rossi representing its brand. His nine Grand Prix World Championships have made him a legend, and he has one of the most prolific careers among motorcycle racers. In fact, he is the only roadracer who has competed in 400 or more Grand Prix races, and he currently holds the record for the most Grand Prix career podium finishes with 235. D.I.D’s partnership with Rossi is multi-faceted. In addition to Rossi promoting the D.I.D brand and its products worldwide, the two names will also collaborate on future product lines, including co-developed and co-branded products. While Rossi will be the D.I.D global brand ambassador, D.I.D will be the Technical Partner of Rossi’s VR46 Academy. Designed to help young up-and-coming Italian racers get a head start in the competitive world of motorcycle racing, the VR46 Academy utilizes a range of different riding styles to train attendees, including dirt riding. Since D.I.D makes chains for on-road and off-road use, it is a natural fit for the brand to support the various racing and training exercises at the academy. D.I.D will also provide technical support to the SKY Racing Team VR46 for the 2021 and 2022 Moto2 World Championships, further supporting the next generation of road racing stars.

D.I.D has teamed up with nine-time Grand Prix World Champion Valentino Rossi as the company’s global brand ambassador as part of a 3-year partnership that will help other riders find their own success.

ucceeding at the top levels of motorcycle racing is no easy task. Doing it year-after-year is even more difficult. Nevertheless, D.I.D has been able to do just that, as teams and riders utilizing the brand’s chains continue to make their way to the top of the podium again and again. Fittingly, D.I.D has announced that they have teamed up with Valentino Rossi as their global brand ambassador as

The product collaborations between D.I.D and Rossi will use the same innovative materials and technologies already found in the D.I.D chains available today. In fact, D.I.D’s slogan is, “Powered by Technology.”

This mindset can be seen in the meticulous engineering and materials choices that go into each chain to ensure the right combination of strength, consistency, weight and performance for specific applications. Technology features on D.I.D chains include things like the company’s patented X-Ring seal, Direct Energy Transfer and SDH pin treatment. It is this kind of quality and attention to detail that has made D.I.D, like Rossi, such a formidable competitor on the track. ■

Three Decades of Progress Akrapovic Celebrates 30th Anniversary

Akrapovič’s range of full system exhausts and slip-on mufflers are singular in their design and exceptional in their performance. There’s no mistaking the company’s unique styling.

T

he year 2021 marks the 30th anniversary for Akrapovič, an exhaust manufacturer that has become an icon in the motorsports industry and is world renowned for the quality, appearance and performance of its products. Given the company’s stature in 2021 – with over 1,200 employees, its own titanium foundry, numerous design awards, and 140 world championships achieved – it might be hard to imagine Akrapovič’s humble beginnings in a small workshop in the Slovenian town of Ivančna Gorica back in 1991. That’s where Igor Akrapovič, a roadracer himself, began fabricating custom performance exhausts to meet the high technical demands of competition. With his intense commitment to innovation, Akrapovič invested heavily in R&D as he pursued new designs and technologies. His bespoke exhaust won races, attracted the attention of factory teams, and eventually led to Akrapovič becoming a prominent brand at every level of competition, including AMA Supercross, MotoAmerica Superbike, MotoGP, MXGP, and WSBK. Year after year, the Akrapovič brand has continually pushed boundaries in design and manufacturing. An early innovator of unique materials like titanium and carbon fiber, Akrapovič runs its own titanium foundry and tubing mill, and makes use of robotic welders, hydroforming equipment and laser cutting tools. The company also has its own metallurgical laboratory and durability dyno to both develop and test new alloys and exhaust designs. While those early exhausts were handmade by the company’s namesake and a few employees, today, every

Famous for its complex and attractive carbon-fiber muffler designs, Akrapovič techs handle the entire production process, from cutting the fabric to laying up the molds. All told, 95 percent of carbon fiber, titanium, and stainless steel components are produced in-house at the company’s 270,000 square-foot facility in Slovenia, enabling Akrapovič to maintain strict quality standards. It’s this attention to detail and commitment to quality that makes Akrapovič a trusted partner to so many factory racing teams, and it’s part of what makes Akrapovič exhausts such an appealing upgrade for your customer’s bikes. From onand off-road motorcycles to scooters, Akrapovič has a full lineup of slip-on and full systems available. Designed to make hardworking vehicles even more capable and durable, the products include heavy-duty gas shocks, drive belts and storage racks. This is the first time Moose Utility Division has offered gas shocks, enabling customers to upgrade from the standard oil shocks. These heavyduty front and rear gas shocks are a step above OEM in terms of performance, but they are also superior in durability. The rugged design includes 10 percent stiffer springs. The heavy-duty gas shocks come ready to mount, right out of the box, to make the suspension upgrade as easy as possible. Once mounted, customers can dial in the right setup with the adjustable preload settings. Moose Utility Division packages the gas shocks with the necessary struts, springs, retainers and bumpers (where applicable).

Moose Utility Division is now offering gas shocks, enabling customers to upgrade from the standard oil shocks. These heavy-duty front and rear gas shocks are a step above OEM in terms of performance.

ATV and UTV powertrains can now get an extra dose of durability with the Moose Utility Division Performance Plus ATV/UTV drive belts. The compounds used for each belt have been specially formulated for each application to ensure the best possible performance. Additionally, Aramid cord provides an extra layer of strength and durability. All of the belts are made in the USA by Ultimax Belts, a trusted name in drive belt production. Riders often rely on their ATVs to haul a lot of things, and Moose Utility Division knows that it is important to use every bit of available space for storage. There are now three additional cargo options for ATVs, including a drop rack as well as front and rear mesh racks. High-End Exhausts for any Bike

Ti-6 Pro Ti system

T6 Stainless Steel system

T

hese days the Pro Circuit name is known for a range of motocross and off-road parts and accessories that help riders get the most from their machines. However, engine tuning is at the very root of the company’s success, ever since the late 1970s when racers were clamoring for founder Mitch Payton’s secret to desert-racing success. High-performance exhaust pipes were the first parts to be sold out of Mitch’s small shop, and eventually the company grew to supply and support some of the most famous champions in the sport. For 2021 Pro Circuit continues its lineage of excellence in exhaust with its lineup of Ti-6 and T-6 systems. All systems use a muffler bracket that is designed for the ideal balance of light weight and durability, with precision TIG welding throughout. An asymmetrical configuration of the silencer allows for optimum volume of packing material in the muffler. Pro Circuit’s Ti-6 Pro Titanium Exhaust System was created for professional racers, specifically those competing in domestic or international series such as AMA Supercross or motocross to ensure they pass AMA/FIM sound regulations. The Ti-6 Pro Titanium Exhaust System is constructed of titanium throughout the head pipe, mid pipe and canister, with a proverbial cherry-on-top of a carbon-fiber end cap. The Ti-6 Pro is Pro Circuit’s high-end offering of technology and innovation in the professionallevel race exhaust market.

T6 Stainless Steel slip-on

For riders who want the same technology, but have potentially more casual use, there’s the standard Ti-6 full system. The Ti-6 offers maximum performance and titanium construction throughout the head pipe, mid pipe and canister, with the same carbon-fiber end cap. This system’s real party trick is that it meets AMA amateur racing sound requirements, as well as being equipped with a United States Forest Service-approved spark arrestor. That means an easy switch between off-road and closed-course racing, without giving up the performance, durability or professional look of the series. Pro Circuit knows that not everyone has a factory budget, but everyone wants the tuning know-how of a professional company and the look to match. The T-6 Stainless Steel system is a good bet, offering maximum performance while using stainless steel to construct the head pipe, mid pipe and end-cap, and aluminum for the canister. If someone wants to dip a toe in the pool before jumping in, there’s the T-6 Stainless Steel slip-on, designed for a rider looking for an inexpensive, easy-to-install, durable performance silencer that can bolt onto their stock head pipe. This slip-on silencer boasts a stainless steel mid pipe and end-cap, while the canister is constructed of aluminum. ■

Products Designed for Riders, by Riders

Risk Racing’s Lock-N-Load Pro is adaptable for a variety of bike sizes and styles. The system eliminates the need for tie-downs, while offering a super secure hold.

P

erhaps one of the most rewarding qualities of our industry is that many brands were born from a true passion for the sport. Sure, someone off the street could do a little research and come up with something to market to the powersports world, but the lack of experience swinging a leg over a motorcycle can be spotted from a mile away. Now with more than fifteen years under its belt, Risk Racing got its start in the garage of James Burry, whose combined passion for motocross and product design sparked a chain reaction of moto innovation. Today, Risk Racing offers a range of unique products designed to help riders get the most enjoyment out of their sport, both on and off the bike. One of Risk Racing’s veteran innovations is the Lock-NLoad moto transport system. This system removed the need for tie-downs all together, offering a more secure hold while saving fork seals and internals from potentially damaging pressure. With only two steps required to secure the bike and release it, your customers may never want to touch a tie down again.

Your customers can practice their starts just about anywhere thanks to the Risk Racing Holeshot starting gate, which provides randomly timed gate drops to help sharpen reflexes.

PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Off-Road Innovation

The Lock-N-Load Pro is the latest generation that boasts full adjustability, making them adaptable to a broader range of bike sizes and styles. All versions are available in full size and for mini machines, and can be quickly removed from their mounting location, leaving only a low-profile base plate. Now your customers have gotten their bikes to the track securely, how about practicing some starts? The Holeshot starting gate from Risk Racing is an electronic, practice starting gate. A wireless remote mounts on the rider’s crossbar pad and activates a randomly timed gate drop when pressed. If riders are out with a trainer or some buddies, the gate also has an instant drop featured controlled by a second party and can be connected with other Holeshot gates. Even with a dialed holeshot technique, a mud moto can throw a wrench in skill and focus. While roll-offs are the preferred system for clear vision during mudders, Risk Racing recognized it requires riders to take their hands off the bars in the worst conditions to do so. They developed the RIPPER auto film system, an automated roll-off system that attaches to just about any traditional roll-off style goggle. With the simple push of a handlebar-mounted button, the RIPPER automatically pulls the roll-off tab for the rider so they can worry more about their ride than their vision. While those are just a few of Risk Racing’s leading innovations, their entire catalog is full of products that’ll make your customers say, “Why didn’t I think of that?” From the RR1 Ride-On Lift stand, to the versatile Factory Pit Mat, and even specialty tools, the Risk Racing team puts its offroad heart and soul into each of its products. ■
