An Unforgettable Adventure Ride by D on Em de
Photos by Joe Colombero, Kinney Jones and Barry Hathaway
H
aving the Adventure bike category as our main theme of this issue brings back so many great memories of dual sport and adventure bike rides I’ve taken through the years. For me, my best memory is about a multi-year project I did from 2012 into mid-2014 when I wanted to retrace the transcontinental route that pioneer motorcyclist Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker had ridden a century ago. On May 3, 1914, Baker departed San Diego, California on a 1913 Indian twin and averaging about 300 miles a day, he rode coast to coast, ending his journey 3,497 miles later on Manhattan Island in New York City. Joe Colombero, a long-time writer and contributor to Parts Magazine, was with me through the entire project. Starting in 2012, we first did numerous trips out in the desert east of San Diego to try to locate the actual roads that Baker had mentioned in a booklet printed by the Indian company back in the day. The dirt and sand in California and Arizona created the biggest challenges for us. Much of our research riding was done on two KTM 990s provided by KTM. Joe and I eventually made it all the way to the east coast on them. It took about a year to figure out, but once we had a route patched together that was either on roads Cannon Ball had actually ridden or the closest thing to it, then the next step was for one continuous ride from San Diego to New York City. We got Yamaha on board to provide a couple of Super Tenere adventure bikes and other assistance for a “Cannon Ball Centennial” ride exactly 100 years to the day that Baker had in 1914. I and a couple dozen friends departed San Diego on May 3, 2014 and paced ourselves across the country ending each day as close as we could make it to Baker’s itinerary. We arrived, as he did, on May 14th and rode to Battery Park on Manhattan for a group photo with the Statue of Liberty in the background. Afterwards, I turned my adventure ride into a book called “Finding Cannon Ball’s Trail.” It was only possible because of the versatility of the KTMs and Yamahas we rode that got us through some sand and dirt roads out west, but also were great on the roads and highways all the way to New York. I’ll never forget what a great time I had on my big adventure. I encourage you all to go make some memories of your own. ■

First-Quarter Motorcycle Sales Up MIC REPORTS DOUBLE-DIGIT INCREASES IN EVERY CATEGORY –
N
ew-model motorcycle sales among leading brands increased more than 37.2 percent in the first quarter of 2021, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council Retail Sales Report. The Q1 sales, compared to the same period last year, were up by double digits in every category – on-highway, off-highway, dual-purpose and scooter. “This is the fourth straight quarter of strong sales numbers, indicating continued and growing interest in riding among new and returning riders,” said Erik Pritchard, MIC president and CEO. “Combine the new-motorcycle sales performance with the pace of tire sales, and we know that more riders are putting on more miles. We hope that indicates that riding is becoming a larger part of consumers’ lives.” The MIC Retail Sales Reporting System gathers new motorcycle and scooter retail sales data from 14 leading manufacturers and distributors in the U.S., providing a strong indicator of total sales trends. Year-to-date sales of dual-purpose motorcycles were up the most, by 47 percent. With May serving as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, the MIC’s Pritchard says the organization is glad to see a continued strong interest in hands-on rider training. “The Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic RiderCourse and the MSF DirtBike School are great places to start if you are new to motorcycling. The DirtBike School is open to students age six and up,” he said. “For more experienced riders, advanced courses are available. We encourage riders to continue with training and education whenever possible.” ■

The Law Tigers Legendary Sacramento Mile dates back to 1959 on the former California State Fairgrounds oval track, and has now been hosted at the current Cal Expo site since 1978. “We are extremely happy to bring the Progressive American Flat Track Series back to Cal Expo this year,” said Steve DiLorenzi, president and CEO of SDI Racing, LLC. “With COVID-19 restrictions, it was very difficult to host the Legendary Sacramento Mile and we needed to wait to the proper time. Now, with those restrictions lifting, the great flat track action can return to the West Coast and continue the legacy of the Cal Expo sensational racing.” The last Sacramento Mile program was run on August 10, 2019 when Mees secured his second consecutive Cal Expo feature win in the Mission SuperTwins class. “With a two-year absence of Progressive AFT on the West Coast due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe the riders, teams, sponsors and fans are excited to return to Cal Expo and its historic dirt oval,” said Michael Lock, CEO of Progressive American Flat Track. “The legacy of the Sacramento Mile has established its lore as one of the greatest mile motorcycle tracks ever.” ■

Adventure Market Overview SEGMENT BOOMING WITH BIKES, APPAREL AND ACCESSORIES
T
he Adventure/dual-sport segment of the motorcycle market has been on a tear in the past few years.
Although responsible for only 11 percent of new motorcycle purchases in 2020, Adventure/ dual-sport sales have more than doubled in the past decade, last year posting a 132 percent increase compared to sales in 2010, according to figures provided by the Motorcycle Industry Council. Why is this niche, while historically still relatively small compared to market-leading cruiser and sportbikes, garnering greater market share?

Reminiscent of standard road bikes, but with longer travel suspensions, a compliant seating position, racks and wind protection, Adventures have become the SUVs of the twowheel world. Dual-sport motorcycles can tackle mountain trails and roads with equal vigor, and their relatively low purchase price, standard operating platform and utility effectiveness makes them a target for beginner and experienced riders alike. The market includes bikes ranging from simple, small displacement, knobby-tired machines obtainable for around $5,000 to on-road-biased models powered by liter-plus engines, dripping with technology and sold for north of $20,000.

What’s hot now? Everything from the smaller displacement Honda CRF300L and KTM 350 EXC-F to the mid-size Kawasaki KLR650 and Yamaha Tenere 700, to big-bore bikes like the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure and the Ducati Multistrada V4. Harley-Davidson is even jumping into the popular segment with its new Pan America 1250. At the same time, venerable offerings like the Honda XR650L, Suzuki DR-Z400S and Yamaha XT250 also continue to be in demand. No matter what bike your customers choose to ride when it comes time for an Adventure or dual-sport trip, Parts Unlimited has them covered when it comes to parts, apparel and accessories. With a little help from the Helmet & Apparel, Off-Road, Street and Tire & Service catalogs, your dealership can stock or order a wide range of luggage, skid plates and protective bars, bolt-on accessories, tires, helmets, jackets, pants, and gloves – you name it – to get those riders ready for the road. What kind of gear can be offered to this growing number of adventurous and adventure-hopeful riders? Here’s a brief run-down: Alpinestars’ Drystar collection includes jackets, pants, gloves and boots offering 100 percent waterproofing as well as great levels of breathability and abrasion resistance. The CE-certified Andes Drystar v3 and Stella Andes Drystar v3 jackets are adaptable to all weather conditions. Matching the jackets, the CE-certified Andes Drystar v3 and Stella Andes Drystar v3 pants feature tapered, pre-contoured leg construction, a removable thermal liner, vents, hip pad compartments, knee protectors, reflective detailing, an adjustable waist system and cargo-style pockets. The S-Max Drystar gloves and Stella S-Max gloves are both CE-certified short sport gloves constructed from a mixture of leather and stretch mesh and outfitted with a covered hard knuckle as well as touchscreen-compatible fingertips. Complete the collection with a pair of Tech 7 Enduro Drystar over-calf boots reinforced for resistance against impact and abrasion. Icon also has a new collection of Adventure-focused product, including the Stormhawk series of jacket, pants, gloves and boots. The durable Stormhawk WP textile jacket is backed with a waterproof/breathable membrane. Internally the jacket is reinforced for improved abrasion resistance and features D3O CE-certified shoulder, elbow and back impact protectors, as well as a full-length insulated liner.

Waterproof Bags for any Kind of Adventure The “Plus” in the Tørke dry Rifle Case Plus comes from the addition of exterior MOLLE webbing and a removable dry pouch that easily mounts to it. The Tørke pouch is a great place to store ammunition, protective gear and other small items. It is also outfitted with MOLLE webbing, which makes it easy to mount to any MOLLE-equipped piece of gear. It is available separately, as well. The bags in the Tørke line feature a removable highvisibility support structure that provides shape retention and makes it easier to see anything being stored inside the bags. A variety of internal and external storage pockets keep gear neatly organized. The 24-liter Tørke panniers are lightweight and designed for easy organization, with interior and exterior pockets, removable cargo nets, removable neoprene pockets and an elastic water bottle pocket.
Kuryakyn’s Tørke collection features a range of bags that are fully waterproof and are designed to be mounted in a variety of configurations.
T
he Tørke Dry Bags by Kuryakyn are made for adventurers. Yes, of course that includes Adventure riders, but it also includes anyone who will hit the road regardless of the weather as well as ATV/UTV enthusiasts who know that getting dirty is part of the fun. The Tørke collection has grown recently with the addition of two rifle cases and a removable dry pouch. The rest of the Tørke collection includes 24-liter panniers, a 7-liter tank bag, a 25-liter backpack and a 35-liter duffel bag. Bags include a mounting strap kit that can be used on a wide variety of vehicles, and there are no brackets required, so the bags can be mounted in different configurations.
The 7-liter Tørke tank bag mounts via a magnetic base or mounting straps. Detachable backpack straps make it easy to bring along after the ride. Designed for ergonomics, the 25-liter Tørke backpack has adjustable, breathable padded mesh shoulder straps that detach so the backpack can convert to motorcycle luggage. An internal neoprene pocket will keep tablets and laptops safe. Riders needing a lot of space will like the 35-liter Tørke duffle bag. A removable shoulder strap makes it easy to carry, and the external cargo net expands the storage potential. ■
» Talk to your Parts rep about Kuryakyn’s Tørke Dry Bags and find them in the Street, ATV & UTV and Off-Road catalogs.
All of the pieces in the Tørke line share a number of features. No matter how wet it is outside, the inside of a Tørke bag will be dry thanks to its fully-waterproof, double-coated PVC material and RF-welded seams. The zippers are all IPX7-rated, which is the submersible level of waterproofness. In other words, if a bike winds up in a creek, all of the gear inside the Tørke will stay dry. The integrated air/purge valves minimize space, but also provide buoyancy, a perk that makes the bags ideal for boating, too. The Tørke dry Rifle Case and Rifle Case Plus are both ideal for hunting by ATV, UTV or even boat. The fully-waterproof cases have a plush padded interior to keep rifles and scopes well protected.

Cleaned, Lubed, and Running Strong Keep the Adventure Going
Special attention was paid to the way ProPlus+ affects clutch feel and engagement, which is critical during tricky off-road riding. To keep their fuel systems happy during this summer’s adventures, your customers can keep a few of Maxima’s Fuel Enhancer pillow packs on hand. These convenient 1-ounce doses will treat a full tank of gas and are designed to help prevent and cure problems associated with ethanol content or low-quality fuels as can be encountered at far-flung gas stations. The advanced formulation helps prevent corrosion, varnish and gum, and can clean up a fuel system that’s already fallen victim to these unwanted contaminants.
When it comes to your Adventure bike-riding customers, Maxima has a broad line of products to keep their bikes running and looking great.
P
rime riding season is here, and the hard hours your customers put on their versatile Adventure bikes – whether as touring rigs, canyon carvers, or backwoods explorers – calls for careful maintenance. Maxima has what they need to keep their bikes running and looking good with quality products like ProPlus+ engine oil, Chain Wax, SC1 High Gloss Coating, and Fuel Enhancer.
Maxima’s Fuel Enhancers are compact, easy to carry, and are a great solution when having to run low-quality fuels sometimes found at far-flung gas stations.
The state of tune of modern Adventure bikes is stunning, with large displacement engines cranking out gobs of torque and 100-plus horsepower across a wide rpm range. Of course, chain care shouldn’t be neglected this summer, and Maxima keeps it simple with its Chain Wax chain lube. Whether riding on a rain-soaked highway or kicking up dust off road, Chain Wax works equally well. Featuring a paraffin wax base and a strong heptane carrier agent, Chain Wax coats links to provide a durable and effective layer of protection. Chain Wax is highly water repellant and fairly clean running in dry, dirty environments, making it a great lube for mixed conditions. If your customers aren’t sure where their travels will take them or what conditions their drivetrains will face, Chain Wax has them covered. Adventure bike rides can often involve multiple climates and terrains. Maxima’s Chain Wax chain lube is designed to work as well in the dust and dirt as on rainsoaked highways.
Finally, there’s Maxima’s legendary SC1 cleaner and polish. Everyone has pride in their ride, and SC1 makes it easy to keep bikes looking great. Whether your customers spray it on road-weary machines to restore luster and hide scratches, or preemptively douse fenders, wheels, and engine cases to keep dirt and mud from sticking, SC1 works wonders. This surface-tenacious formula is imbued with closely-guarded ingredients that revitalize a variety of finishes, and it’s one of the easiest ways to restore and protect a bike. ■

Bags and Packs for Every Adventure
M
oose Racing has been producing bags and rider packs for a long time, and that experience has led to a diversified range of options that covers everything from taking tools along for the ride to ensuring the rider stays well hydrated. An early focus on designing dual-sport lines has evolved over time to include the ADV1 soft luggage line for the Adventure Touring market, as well. The result is that Moose Racing has a bag or pack solution for everything from a quick trail ride to a long-haul adventure.
The off-road trail strap is a must for those unexpected situations. The 12-foot-long nylon strap is sturdy but compact, fitting neatly into a small pouch that can mount to either the bike or the rider’s belt. No matter how carefully everything is prepped for the ride, things can still go wrong. The Moose Racing tool wrap makes it easy to do trailside repairs. Tool compartments as well as a small zippered bag ensure that everything is neatly organized.
Rider Packs
Bike Packs Moose Racing bike packs are straightforward, which means they are easy to mount. Each bike pack is carefully engineered for efficiency, and the rugged 500D tarpaulin material is water resistant as well as tough enough for the trail. The dual-sport fender pack can easily accommodate inner tubes, some tools and even a piece of compact gear. Included mounting hooks make it easy to securely attach the fender pack to most front fenders, and a rubberized base keeps it from sliding around. The front number plate trail pack mounts easily to the headlamp cowl or front number plate, which means a rider can access the contents without ever getting off the bike. Internal and external storage compartments keep things neatly organized.
Riders have to be comfortable and able to move around, but with the right pack designs, a rider can easily haul a few things, too. Moose Racing designed its rider packs to be worn around the waist, and the designs maximize storage space without being bulky. A variety of zippered pockets and elastic bands keep everything organized and in place, even over rough terrain.
One of Moose Racing’s most popular bag options is the small rear fender pack. This little piece of gear has a wraparound zipper and a wide flap, making it easy to access everything inside while still keeping the elements out.
The Qualifer pack is a lot like the Moose Racing tool wrap, but in a fanny pack design. These packs are ideal for race technicians who need to have the essentials at hand for those inevitable quick repairs.

Hydration Packs Moose Racing designed its hydration packs to fit the length of the ride, varying the amount of fluids and storage in each one. The compartments are balanced for better weight management, which helps prevent rider fatigue.
Moose Racing’s ADV1 luggage is made of heavyweight PVC-coated fabric with heat-welded seams. Combined with a rolled closure system, water stays out while the contents stay dry. Expanded openings make packing and unpacking simple, and integrated buckles and straps make it easy to adjust the fit on all Adventure and dual-sport models. Ultralight internal bags keep contents organized. The ADV1 dry saddlebags are available in both 20-liter and 30-liter sizes and include quick-disconnect buckles for convenience. ADV1 dry tail packs come in three different sizes, including 25 liters, 40 liters and 60 liters. The compression straps help keep bags secure or store external gear, and the zippered external pocket can keep small items at hand.
The Hip hydration pack is a lightweight pack that holds a 1.5-liter bladder, ideal for riders who want to stay hydrated without adding a lot of weight. The padded waist strap and ventilated back padding ensure comfort.
The ADV1 dry backpack might look compact, but it actually has a 22-liter capacity. Adjustable shoulder and sternum straps help riders get the perfect fit, and an external pocket will hold small items.
The Light hydration backpack is good for riders who don’t have a lot of cargo but want two liters of fluid along for the ride. Padded shoulder straps are one of the perks. For riders who have more distance to cover and more gear to carry, the Trail hydration backpack has a three-liter bladder and multiple pockets for more than 600 cubic inches of storage capacity.
MOOSE RACING
The XCR Enduro fanny pack is an organizer’s dream, with one main compartment flanked by two smaller zipped pouches. The pack has back padding with integrated ventilation channels as well as an extra-wide belt.
Moose Racing dry bags are available in a 25-liter option or a three-pack with a 2-liter, 5-liter and 10-liter bag. These lightweight, waterproof polyester bags have a drawstring and a roll-down top. Once packed, they go inside ADV1 luggage for the ultimate on-the-go organization. ■ Light hydration backpack

And, of course, it’s impossible to omit the tried-and-true Michelin Pilot Power, a single-compound tire that is ideal for the entry-level sport rider, blending an affordable price and confidence-inspiring features. The Anakee Wild is a true 50/50 tire that is highly adept at both on-road performance, and in tough off-road conditions.
What’s left after all of those segments? Adventure Touring, of course. The popularity explosion for all things Adventure continues, which means Michelin has been hard at work not just developing an Adventure Touring tire but developing a whole range of Adventure tires to suit the varying preferences of riders in this category. The Michelin Anakee Adventure is the newest tire available from Michelin in this segment. It is ideal for riders who like long-distance touring on the highway but don’t want to sacrifice the ability to get off the pavement when the opportunity arises. Michelin designed the tire as an 80/10 mix for on-road and off-road use. The Michelin Anakee Adventure is an evolutionary step from its predecessor, the Michelin Anakee III, which is still a popular tire for riders who want a street tire that can tackle gravel fire roads. The dual-compound construction of the Anakee Adventure provides optimal on-road grip in both the wet and dry, while still giving riders the longevity they need for serious touring. Michelin’s Bridge Block Technology adds stability in the corners, while the aggressive tread blocks boost performance in off-road conditions like gravel and hard-pack dirt.

As Michelin puts it, the Michelin Anakee Adventure will get you to the mountain, but the Michelin Anakee Wild will get you over the mountain. For riders who want a full 50/50 tire that can handle challenging off-road conditions, the Michelin Anakee Wild balances the best of both worlds. The Bridge Block Technology adds stability in corners while riding on paved surfaces, but the deep, knobby tread blocks can bite into tough off-road terrain. The radial construction offers good sidewall flex and a reduced need to air down during off-road riding.

The Michelin Road 5 Trail is designed for Adventure riders who prefer to stick to the paved roads. Maintenance All sealed chains require routine cleaning and maintenance in order to perform as designed. RK recommends that your technicians and customers use a cleaner specific to motorcycle chains, and is designed to be used on sealed chains. Do not use brake cleaner, engine cleaner or any cleaner that contains acid or caustic chemicals. These harsh ingredients can damage the chain’s seals, reducing the performance and wear life of the chain and will void the chain’s warranty. RK Excel America’s website offers complete chain maintenance instructions. ■

here are a lot of variables in motocross and offroad riding. Different types of machines, varying terrain, different riding styles, even an array of rider mentalities. Despite those differences, one of the few constants is the passion for the sport, and it’s one of the core drivers that gives riders the itch to get back out there. It’s that same passion that led to the creation of THOR and its line of iconic motocross gear and apparel. With roots stemming from some of the earliest days of motocross racing more than 50 years ago, THOR’s dedication to the sport has never wavered and the company is still sharing its passion for motocross and off-road with riders around the globe.

to competition set in varying terrain on a broad range of high-performance machines. Whether it’s an XC model, dual-sport or Adventure bike, these machines are capable of handling anything thrown at them. The THOR crew knows this firsthand, being riders and racers themselves, and the company recognized a need for equally advanced and capable off-road gear. The new Terrain Off-Road lineup brings wearable equipment designed to be as rugged as it is versatile. THOR’s product team has perfected each piece to be able to withstand the elements while ensuring performance and comfort for the rider. First-up in the collection is the Terrain Off-Road jacket. Durability, function and comfort are the name of the game with this jacket, as it’s constructed with Dura-Motion and Rip-Stop paneling for tough flexibility. There’s also a DWR coating, Hipora membrane and taped zippers for water resistance. THOR put serious thought into the functional features of this jacket, incorporating three high-volume, zippered pockets to securely hold any Adventure and dual-sport ride essentials, zip-off sleeves with their own rear storage compartment, zippered intake and exhaust vents and even the option to pack the jacket into a belt when it’s not needed. Complementing the jacket, the Terrain Off-Road line also includes purpose-designed pants available in both in-the-boot and over-the-boot styles. These pants share high-level durability characteristics with the jacket, featuring inner-knee leather panels and Dura-Motion and Rip-Stop paneling. Impressive functionality is continued in the pant with high-volume pockets, waterproof zippers, an internal hip pocket, dual-side cinches for precise waist adjustment, and zippered intake vents to adjust to the riding climate. Both the Terrain jacket and pants are available in black and camo colorways, delivering looks as good as their performance.

Lightweight, perforated biofoam, an airprene chassis, TPR panels and moisture-wicking materials all combined with an ergonomic design makes this belt a sleek option. THOR’s latest in protection offerings doesn’t stop there. Trailmax Mission Adventure Tires
Dunlop’s Trailmax Mission is a true 50/50 tire. It offers a knobby-like performance off-road, impressive grip on the street and stability both on-road and off.
The Trailmax Mission design includes deep tread grooves for wet-weather agility, durable wraparound lugs for better offroad rigidity, and a tread pattern designed for solid street performance.
R
ider feedback about the Dunlop Trailmax Mission Adventure tires begins to sound like a broken record after a while, and that’s absolutely a good thing. Time after time, riders report that the Trailmax Mission is a true 50/50 tire that offers stability at top highway speeds and off-road confidence from the moment the bike ventures off the pavement. As Adventure bikes have continued to improve in performance, Dunlop knew its next tire for that market had to follow suit. By combining engineering and testing with a vast amount of consumer research, Dunlop has come up with what the company calls one of its most versatile tires yet. Dunlop spent two years developing the Trailmax Mission, fine-tuning the design across more than 30 prototypes to deliver a true 50/50 tire. The result is a knobby-like performance off-road, impressive grip on the street and stability both on-road and off. The market research was an immensely important part of the process, too. Dunlop engineers and researchers attended consumer shows, rallies and other motorcycling events to talk to the very riders for whom they would be developing the Trailmax Mission. Among other things, they asked riders how much time they spent on various surfaces, like highways, back roads, dirt and gravel. They also gathered information about what riders want and need in an Adventure tire.

Among the insight gleaned from the research were a few things that really determined the direction of the Trailmax Mission’s development. For one thing, Dunlop learned that mileage was the number one thing riders most wanted in an Adventure tire. That meant the Trailmax Mission would have to deliver when it came to durability. At the same time, though, it had to perform without compromise. And that’s where we get back to riders’ reviews having a lot of similarities. Reviewers are raving about the blend of performance and incredible mileage, with one rider noting that 7,000 miles after mounting a set of Trailmax Mission tires, they were still going strong. From highway speeds well above the limit to braving river crossings, riders reported stability, grip, smooth cornering, a quiet ride and jaw-dropping longevity. The best-of-both-worlds design includes deep tread grooves for wet-weather performance and biting edges, staggered step technology that aids off-road grip, durable wraparound lugs for better off-road rigidity, and a tread pattern designed for solid street performance. Another thing Dunlop learned by talking to riders before developing the tire is that American riders wanted an Adventure tire made in the USA. The Trailmax Mission was designed at Dunlop’s facility in Buffalo, New York, where it is now manufactured. All testing was carried out at Dunlop’s proving grounds in Alabama. ■

“You gotta be freezing out there!” the man exclaimed through his waterproof balaclava. “It’s a Harley. I work up a sweat just kickstarting the thing,” Bryant replied. Glancing at the boxes, bags, navigation screens and other gear strapped to two Adventure bikes, Bryant asked, “How long you guys been on the road?”
O
n a bitterly cold day in Death Valley many years ago, two heavily laden Adventure riders approached Bill Bryant at a gas stop in the desert. After unplugging his heated suit, the guy on a BMW R 1250 GS asked Biltwell’s co-founder about his bike – a rigid Harley-Davidson chopper – and his gear; a leather jacket, denim vest and open-face helmet.
“We pulled out two days ago. We’re heading home tomorrow. Yourself?” “Ten days next Tuesday,” Biltwell’s brand manager responded, giving the backpack and bed roll on his sissy bar a smack for added effect. Seemingly unaware of the irony of their exchange, the two riders took sips from their hydration packs, synched their Bluetooth headphones and rode away. Unimpressed by their fully loaded rigs, Bryant stuffed a newspaper into his vest for extra insulation, kicked some life into his chopper and hit the highway with the rest of his fast-moving, light-packing friends. The moral of this story is simple: With the right gear, determination and mindset, every motorcycle is an adventure bike. Biltwell gear like helmets, gloves and moto luggage works great every time – just put ‘em on, strap ‘em up, twist the throttle and go. ■

Road Legal, Trail Ready
Tires for Serious Dual-Sport Riders The foundation of the biteMX is a sturdy four-ply carcass that’s tuned to yield a balance of durability, handling and ride quality across a wide range of terrain. Extensive testing ensures the tire’s sidewalls and tread foundation are tuned to tackle everything from rocky technical trails to wide-open, high-speed fire roads and desert expanses. Capping it off is an aggressive tread structure molded from a natural-rubber compound that balances durability with strong, consistent traction in the wet and dry. A semi-wide tread pattern bites into the trail when the surface is soft and loose, and careful block placement promotes strong self-cleaning when the trail gets muddy. Along the shoulder of the road-legal biteMX, tread spacing is reduced to provide enhanced support for consistent feedback and traction while cornering. From the inside out, the biteMX features materials, technologies and design aspects intended to increase its off-road performance, all while carrying the DOT symbol that makes it legal for road use. If your customers are gearing up for a big adventure this summer, make sure they’re rolling on tires that are suitable for the terrain. The biteMX is in stock and ready to ship. ■

eautiful single-track meandering through a forest. Ridgetop overlooks. Remote campsites. These are just a few of the visions that flash through the heads of your dual-sport riding customers as they think about the upcoming riding season. And while modern 250cc- and 450cc-class dual sports are incredibly capable, experienced riders know that off-road fun requires the right rubber. That’s where AMS’s biteMX tires come in. With an aggressive off-road tread pattern available in four DOT sizes, the biteMX is a great option for dual-sport riders looking to tackle the trails this summer. AMS is well known for stocking an extensive lineup of wheels and tires for off-road vehicles, and, while most of AMS’s offerings are intended for side-by-sides and other four-wheelers, the biteMX knobby is aimed squarely at those that enjoy life on two wheels. The biteMX is an extremely versatile 80/20 tire that delivers exceptional performance at a price point that your customers will love. It comes in 80/100-21 and 90/100-21 fronts and 110/100-18 and 120/100-18 rears as commonly found on popular bikes like the Honda CRF450X and Yamaha WR250R, and all four sizes meet DOT standards. That means your customers can confidently ride on paved roads while linking together sections of trail.

Adventure and Dual-Sport Clutches The RadiusCX is Rekluse’s own top-of-the-line clutch product, and features an optimized pressure plate and center clutch design – all built for performance on technical terrain or competitive riding.
Rekluse has expanded its auto and manual clutch options for a range of Adventure and dual-sport bikes.
A
dventure and dual-sport customers can now amp up the performance with auto and manual clutch options from Rekluse. The TorqDrive manual clutch and Radius auto clutches are designed for smoother operation and more enjoyable riding – and they’re made in-house in the U.S.A. too. The TorqDrive clutch pack was developed in professional off-road racing. It is comprised of ultra-thin friction discs, so more discs fit into the OEM clutch assembly. The additional discs result in better torque compared to stock. TorqDrive decreases clutch slipping and enables a stronger drive throughout the power band. Shifting is designed to be smoother, too, with improved lever feel over stock. Ideal with a TorqDrive clutch pack, the Rekluse manual slave cylinder kit for Adventure and dual-sport models is a direct OEM replacement designed to improve the hydraulic system’s durability. The upgraded slave cylinder has a durable billet aluminum housing and is built to be tough. Riders will gain a more connected feel and consistent lever performance. On the auto clutch side, Rekluse offers a few options depending on the OEM clutch design. With all Rekluse auto clutches, using the clutch lever is optional. The clutch automatically engages and disengages based on rpm, making engine stalls a thing of the past. The kit helps ensure smooth shifting, which in turn increases traction. In all, this kit boosts rider confidence and reduces fatigue for a ride that’s even more enjoyable. By simply swapping out a clutch pack, riders can enjoy all the benefits of a high-performance auto clutch. The RadiusX clutch kit combines TorqDrive friction disc technology with the auto clutch capabilities of the EXP 3.0 disc. The result is an increased power transfer compared to a stock clutch, easy external adjustment, a longer-lasting clutch and the choice of going full auto or still using the clutch lever.

Your off-road customers should check out the LeftHand Rear Brake, which allows riders precision control of the rear brakes and better body positioning while up on the pegs.
Rekluse designed the RadiusCX as its top-of-the-line clutch product. This option takes the attributes of the RadiusX and steps up the performance a notch, with an optimized pressure plate and center clutch design to ensure consistent performance characteristics. The excellent oil flow means the RadiusCX can handle the high temperatures generated on technical terrain or during competitive riding. For customers who prefer to do all of their riding off-road, Rekluse has announced the return of the Left-Hand Rear Brake. The completely redesigned kit pairs perfectly with Rekluse auto clutches, including the RadiusX and RadiusCX. The Left-Hand Rear Brake allows riders to operate the rear brake using only their left hand. Riders keep the option and function of the rear foot pedal. Whether on the track or trail, riders benefit from next-level control to set up lines or navigate technical terrain. By freeing up a rider’s feet, they have more options when it comes to balancing and body positioning. A full-size billet master cylinder, adjustable positioning via Rail Adjuster (RAD) Mount Technology and a compact design make the lever even more functional. ■

Upgraded Chains and Sprockets
A
dventure and dual-sport riding puts unique demands on a motorcycle. Sometimes the adventure is mostly contained to the pavement and sometimes that adventure takes a sharp turn off-road just to see what’s at the end of the trail. That “ready-for-anything need” on the road or off, wet or dry, extends to the final-drive and Regina Chain has been filling that need since 1939. With the ZRT/ZRE family of chains, and the budget-friendly Black Dual ZRA line, Regina has Adventure and dual sport covered. There are complete chain-and-sprocket kits, too, and Parts Unlimited is the go-to source for all of it. Regina’s Adventure and dual-sport chains are upgrade quality throughout, and use high-carbon alloy steel exclusively. The street/sport-touring focused ZRT chains feature solid bushings, rollers and pins, and the shot-peened side plates are sealed with Z-Rings for highmileage performance. The ZRE chains, the ones aimed at that on-road/off-road role, are also assembled with all those high-carbon alloy steel bushings, rollers, pins and

Don’t overlook those economically priced dual-purpose Regina Black Duals, either. They’re ideal for an everyday dualsport bike. The ZRA chains have all the same high-quality Regina components, just without gold-color side plates. ■

hen ridden as they are built to be used, dual-sport and Adventure bikes have to deliver a lot. Performing on the road and off isn’t easy, and to shine in both those conditions requires some decisions on a rider’s part. The tires chosen will obviously play a big role here, but so will the brakes. Putting the right pads in the calipers of a dual-sport or Adventure bike can go a long way towards building confidence. DP Brakes, the originator of sintered metallic brakes for motorcycling, has an option. It’s surprisingly simple and it takes advantage of the whole family of friction materials DP makes available – brake pads most likely already on your shelf. The DP recommendation for dual-sport and Adventure bikes is to put the application-appropriate SDP Sport HH+ pads in the front caliper and match that with a set of DP Standards for the rear. Simple and effective, this mix-and-match DP compound setup has been adopted by many riders and riding schools – Cole Kirkpatrick’s Gnarly Routes and Brian Garrahan’s Off-Road Schools have set up their bikes this way for years.
DB Brakes sintered metallic brake pads provide the allweather, no-fade performance your customers want when enjoying dual-sport and Adventurestyle riding.
SDP Sport HH+ pads up front will deliver strong, sportbike-level performance braking to a dual-sport or Adventure bike. The DP Standards in the rear match that with a high level of all-around control and durability. And, because they’re both DP Brakes, there’s all-weather/ no-fade performance, braking is squeal-free quiet and dust-free clean, the pads will outlast OE pads, and they’re always easy on the rotors. ■

Lighting Solutions for ATVs and UTVs Moose Utility Division Rock Lights come in packs of four or eight pods. The super-bright LED lights can be set to virtually any color via Bluetooth on an iOS or Android smartphone.

ust because the sun has gone down – or hasn’t come up yet – is no reason not to ride. Whether it’s for work or for fun, plenty of riding happens at hours when a little extra light is necessary to see what’s ahead. And, let’s be honest: sometimes, lights aren’t just about seeing the trail ahead, but also about amping up the style of a vehicle. Luckily, Moose Utility Division has both work and style covered with its range of lighting solutions for ATVs and UTVs. One of the quickest ways to add a big punch of light is to install a Moose Utility Division single-row LED light bar. These light bars come in various lengths, starting at 8 inches and going all the way up to 42 inches. There is also a 3-inch square option. The universal fit, size options and narrow design mean these light bars can be mounted just about anywhere on a vehicle. The versatility doesn’t stop there, though, since the LED light bars have a combination spot/flood beam (80/20). The power input is configured for 11-24V DC applications, and each bar comes complete with a deluxe wiring harness, relay, fuse and all other components necessary to get the bar mounted and powered.
Moose Utility Division designed the LED light bars for excellent durability. The body is made from extruded aluminum that is topped with an automotive-grade epoxy sealant, and the polycarbonate lens resists scratches and impacts. The lens is also built with a magnifying effect to maximize the LED light output. Wet weather is no problem since the light bars are waterproof, and include a militarystyle breather vent for maximum moisture control.
LED LIGHTING
Illuminate the Night
For customers who want as much versatility as possible, the Moose Utility Division Rock Lights are the answer. Each small cast aluminum housing, or pod, includes six super-bright LED chips. Between their size and the extra-long wires on each pod, placement options are virtually limitless, and they can be installed on any vehicle with a 12V system. Moose Utility Division has both four-pod and eight-pod options. The Rock Lights are even more customizable since they can be controlled via Bluetooth and an iOS or Android smartphone. The lights can be set to virtually any color, with as many as 16 million possibilities. There is also a flashing mode and a music mode that syncs the Rock Lights to sound. Polaris RZR customers can add the Moose Utility Division Fang accent LED lights to the front of their vehicle. They are a direct replacement, which makes installation a breeze, and they come in pairs. ■

arts Magazine is proud to congratulate the 2021 Supercross Champions: Cooper Webb Monster Energy Supercross Champion, Colt Nichols 250cc East Supercross Champion and Justin Cooper 250cc West Supercross Champion. These great riders are busy preparing for the MX Nationals, but gave us a few minutes to answer some questions about what turned out to be a stellar season for THOR riders. and I’ve never been able to win three races in a row in a Supercross series.
Parts Magazine: Cooper Webb, congratulations on another Supercross Championship! Tell us about the season?
What racewear do you prefer?
I prepared down in Florida at Baker’s Factory for my offseason. I started riding in November and did some testing in California with the KTM team, and then went to Florida for the winter months to get ready. I also hired Michael Byrne this year as a riding coach and was able to utilize him as well. What was your favorite race? My favorite event this season were the three races in Dallas. I was able to win all three main events there on Saturday, Tuesday and then Saturday again. It was an amazing feeling

Colt Nichols: THOR/Star Racing Yamaha Parts Magazine: Colt Nichols, congratulations on your 250cc Supercross East Championship! Which was your favorite event? It was Houston Three, my first win of the season and I had my parents and some family there, so that made it really special for me. How did you prepare for the season? My trainer Gareth Swanepoel and I just worked really hard this off season and I felt very strong off the bike, and that carried right over to feeling strong on the bike. I was able to put in motos all off season with my teammates and that put me in a position to feel confident and ready to go win. What’s your favorite gear? The THOR Prime Pro gear just fits so well and I love the way it looks. It has held up and the fit and function is top notch. Did you to celebrate your championship? I had some fun Saturday night after the race, and got to hang out with my family in Salt Lake and was able to soak it all in. Now it’s back to work and focusing on trying to do the same in the outdoor championship.

Justin Cooper: THOR/Star Racing Yamaha Parts Magazine: Justin Cooper, congratulations on your 250cc Supercross West Championship! Tell us about your favorite race. This season was Daytona! I always love that event, even though it didn’t start out good for me in the main. I came from 21st to fourth and enjoyed the track and the challenges that came with it. You were injured before the season started, yet still managed to win the championship. Was this a tough start? I ended up breaking my foot four weeks before round one. This caused me to have very little time on the bike, but I got stronger and more comfortable as the season went on. After the first round I knew I was in a good spot to win the whole thing. I faced a lot of adversity that I was able to overcome and keep my title hopes alive in the mid-season. Once I got half-way through the series, I knew I had to be steady at the front to win it all. What is your favorite set of racewear?
What do you do for fun?
My favorite set of THOR gear was the Prime racewear. This gear fits really snug, and it looks great under the lights.
I’ve been golfing quite a bit on my down. I’m horrible but I have a lot of fun just playing with my friends.
What do you do for fun?
Anything you’re like to add or want to say? Yes. I’d just like to say that it has been a hell of a journey to get this East Coast championship, and there’s not enough space to mention all the people who have helped me get here. To everybody in Oklahoma who supported me and my career, thank you!
I like to play some basketball, play some golf, and even head to the RC car track to spin some laps. Anything you’d like to add? I just want to be a good example to the kids out there that think they need to be homeschooled to make it in motocross. You can do both. ■

After starting the season trailing in opening rounds of the Grand National Cross Country Series, Baylor is on a hot streak. Baylor has pushed forward in the simplest possible means: winning. Baylor dominated the GNCC series from round three to round six, and his four straight wins brought him to within five points of of the championship lead. “We made up some really good ground,” Steward said. “Moving forward, it’s no longer do or die to win. I’m just looking forward to being able to ride my own races without all that pressure.”
Moose Racing athlete Johnny Girroir of the Coastal Racing GasGas team is also on a hot streak in the GNCC Series, taking five straight wins in the XC2 250 Pro division. Fellow Moose Racing-backed rider Rachael Archer is locked in a tight battle in the elite Women’s GNCC championship, the WXC division. The Moose Racing-backed AmPro Yamaha team has also been taking on the U.S. Sprint Enduro Championship, where Layne Michael has begun to outshine his teammate, Steward Baylor. Baylor opened up an early lead in the first two rounds, capturing three of the four wins ahead of his teammate. But Michael effectively turned the tables on Baylor, and taken control of the championship with four straight wins in the most recent two stops of the series. Coastal Racing GasGas’ Girroir is proving to be all but unstoppable in the Pro 2 class of the U.S. Sprint Enduro Championship, where he is currently undefeated. Moose Racing-backed Tayla Jones has taken the lioness’ share of wins in the Pro Women division, although Archer has wrestled a few victories from her, including at the most recent round. Archer sits second in the championship, and has no intentions of making life easy for defending Pro Women champion, Jones. Baylor is pulling triple duty, also competing in the National Enduro Series, where he finds his stiffest competition in the defending champion – his brother, Grant Baylor. Stew still leads the championship, with two of three wins in his pocket, and the stage is set for some intense sibling rivalry.

After development and testing in the lab and on the trail, one of Bel-Ray’s latest additions to its powersports lineups is the company’s ATV & SxS synthetic 4T engine oil. The Bel-Ray lubrication experts set out to deliver a premium, multi-grade engine oil formulated to meet the unique demands of virtually all models of Polaris ATVs and UTVs – this oil delivers on all fronts. This formulation has been developed to perform equally well in air-cooled and liquidcooled 4-stroke engines, giving your customers a quality option for everything from initial models of the early 2000s to current models. One key factor that makes this oil shine is its high-level protection against rust, corrosion, wear and deposits. 2021 MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike Championship GAGNE ON A ROLL Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz was roughed up in turn one off the start of race two and finished the opening lap in 14th, but the South African didn’t give up and pushed his way through the pack, eventually making his way to the heels of those battling for third. When all was said and done, Scholtz had worked his way to third to maintain his perfect season of podium finishes – a day after finishing second to Gagne in race one.
Yamaha's Jake Gagne leads Ducati rider Kyle Wyman, Yamaha teammate Josh Herrin and the pack into a turn on his way to victory at VIRginia International Raceway.
T
hree races a championship does not make, but the performance of Fresh N’ Lean Attack Performance Yamaha’s Jake Gagne in the opening two rounds of the 2021 MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike Championship will certainly make sleeping a little rough for those who are racing against him. Gagne won his third straight MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike race at VIRginia International Raceway, and he did so in impressive fashion. In race one, Gagne won by 11.8 seconds. In race two, that gap swelled to 13.9 seconds. As he did in race one, Gagne led every lap, crossing the finish line well clear of Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York’s Loris Baz, the Frenchman earning his first career MotoAmerica podium. “Today was a little more comfortable for us,” Gagne said after race two. “I think it was a little hotter today. I think the track temp was maybe a little hotter. So, I knew I needed to be a little easier on the tires because yesterday we roasted out here pretty good.” Baz’s race two was eventful early as he battled with a pack of four for second place, but once he got to the spot, he was able to pull clear and monitor his gap to third place. He knew there was no catching Gagne, but his 4-2 race results at VIR did wonders to help ease the pain of two non-finishes in the opener at Road Atlanta.

Scholtz’s fourth podium, including his win in race one at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, keeps him in the championship lead with his 81 points as of press time. Gagne’s teammate Josh Herrin is third with 61 points, the 2013 AMA Superbike Champion finishing off the podium for first time this season on Sunday at VIR.
Herrin held off the advances of M4 ECSTAR Suzuki’s Bobby Fong for fourth with the latter bouncing back from mechanical issues that thwarted his progress on Saturday. Kyle Wyman had his strongest race of the 2021 season, the Panera Bread Ducati rider in the fight for second/third early on before slipping back to finish sixth. All this came a day after Gagne turned in a very Cameron Beaubier-esque performance in the first of the two races at VIR. Gagne, who broke five-time MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Beaubier’s lap record earlier in the day during final qualifying, shot from pole position to the lead and was never headed, topping Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz by 11.8 seconds. Third place for the third race in a row was Herrin, some 15 seconds behind his teammate. The battle for third was a good one with Herrin, Baz and Petersen swapping the spot for the majority of the race. It came down to the final laps with the trio crossing the line in formation, with just an eighth of a second separating Herrin from Petersen, and Petersen just six-thousands of a second behind Baz. ■

t wasn’t until late in the 2020 season that the Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York team decided to get their feet wet in the MotoAmerica Superbike Series. Racing the final two rounds of the championship with Lorenzo Zanetti, the HSBK Racing Team, run by Bobby Shek and backed by the Warhorse Powersports Group, found the degree of success and inspiration they were looking for.
“It’s a big project because we all have the same target,” said Baz. “That’s the main thing. We just want to win. Ducati wants to win the first championship since ’94. The team really wants to win. We’re on board with Ferracci, too. He’s a legend with Ducati and he’s the one who won the last title here. We have a strong package coming from the factory in Italy. I’m really happy to be on board with them.”
In 2021, with the factory backing of Parts Unlimited, Ducati Corse and the Midas touch of Fast by Ferracci, the team is plunging into the 2021 season with renewed force, fielding former MotoGP and WorldSBK racer Loris Baz.
At the first two rounds of this year’s 10-round MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike Series at Road Atlanta, Baz showed that the Ducati V4 R has the speed to contend at the top, and although the 28-year-old Frenchman had a couple of problems, the team has taken the positives from the weekend and maintain high hopes for 2021.
Many moving parts came together to form the Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York team, as Louis DeNaples, principal at Warhorse Powersports Group explained. The four businesses that comprise the Warhorse Powersports Group – Warhorse HSBK Racing online store and race shop, and a dealership trio of Ducati New York, North American Warhorse and Horsepower Harley Davidson, all members of the Parts Unlimited family – provide the fuel behind the team effort. With Bobby Shek, team principal/partner in Warhorse HSBK Racing at the helm, and team manager Eraldo Ferracci bringing his legendary expertise, Baz and the team are looking forward to returning Ducati to the American Superbike winner’s circle.

Baz is no stranger to the Ducati race team, having spent two years with Ducati Corse in MotoGP (2016-2017 with Avintia Racing). He was eager to return to the Italian brand, especially under the guidance of Eraldo Ferracci. “He is a Ducati legend,” said Baz. “All the things he did for Ducati, we know him. He’s the first one that called me for this project. I’m really happy to be with him. He’s 85 years old now, and he’s so smart and I love to talk to him and spend time with him. I really enjoy everyone on the team.” The advantage of having factory backing from Ducati along with the family atmosphere of a privateer effort is what

RIDER PROFILE
When it comes to the machinery, even though Baz has experience with Ducati, this season marks his first time on the V4 R. “The first test was the shakedown before the COTA test,” said Baz. “And yeah, I love this bike. It’s such a strong bike. It really reminds me of the MotoGP bike that I had in 2017 – really strong engine.” “We know the guys at Ducati pretty well. And they said, ‘Yeah. The bike is a really, really strong one.’ That’s the main thing, and it’s really important because we don’t have so much time to test. So, I actually trust the Ducati guys that know the bike very well, and we ride with the setup they give us and just try small things to improve, and it works pretty well. I’m happy that we have the support from Ducati. Because without this support it will be impossible.” A strong team and a factory-backed bike were the main elements that drew Baz to race in the United States, another key element is the playing field, itself – in this case, the MotoAmerica HONOS Superbike Series. “The championship is growing since many years now,” said Baz. “They are doing a good job to develop the top guys, too. So that’s a pretty cool championship to ride in.”
appealed to Baz in the Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York team, both aspects being central to a winning effort. “That’s what I’m always trying to look for when I go on a team,” said Baz. “You can ask a lot of things to a team when you sign the contract, but those kind of things … it’s just the feeling you have with the guys. I’m the kind of rider that likes to have really good personal relationships with all the guys on the team, especially because this year I actually moved here and I’m spending a lot of time with them, so it’s even more important to have a good relationship with them. “It’s really special here, mainly the guys from Warhorse that are really, really nice and trying to make me feel like home. Bobby [Shek] from HSBK, for sure Eraldo, and also my mechanic that came from Italy. We are a nice group and we love working together, so that’s really cool.”
The growth of MotoAmerica is also what drew the confidence and support of the Warhorse Powersports Group, as DeNaples added, “We’re very impressed with what MotoAmerica is developing. They’re on the road to bringing AMA Superbike back to what it used to be. They’re doing a phenomenal job.” What is the plan for the remaining 2021 season? Baz and the Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York team has the speed of the Ducati V4 R, the expertise of Fast by Ferracci and the support of Warhorse Powersports Group and Parts Unlimited they need to reach the top. “Last year we got our feet wet at the last two rounds, and we were very inspired by the success we had, and with tying in Mr. Ferracci,” said DeNaples. “It made us come back and organize this season with all intentions of bringing home a championship. We’re happy with our entire crew, and grateful for the support of Ducati North America, as well. We have a great team.” ■

Indian Upgrades
High-Quality Clutches and Cables
Barnett has a range of clutch packs and cable kits for the whole Indian motorcycle range, everything from the performance cruiser Challenger to the hot rod FTR.
W
hen your Indian Motorcycle customers are looking to upgrade their clutches and cables, let them know about everything Barnett has to offer.
Since 1948, the clutch packs and cable kits from Barnett have been OE-upgrades and they’re even better today. The applications cover the Indian lineup, from the big cruisers and touring bikes like the hot rod FTR and the liquid-cooled Challenger. Name the Indian model and Barnett has it covered. The company’s High Efficiency clutch cables are a nice upgrade over the stock lines, and they feature strong, HE wire inside. That wire is nylon coated, lubed with silicone and runs inside a Teflon lining. The result is ultra-smooth action, low lever effort and extended life. And, every cable is a direct-fit and a no-hassle replacement. Depending on the application there are Traditional Black Vinyl casings, a Classic Stainless Braid, and a Platinum Series model. Everything is made in the USA and features chrome-plated fittings where applicable. When that clutch work also means upgrading the whole unit, Barnett has clutch kits that are also made in the USA and are a high-quality upgrade over OE. The kits feature carbon fiber or proprietary Kevlar friction material, and Barnett’s friction plates have a segmented design for improved oil flow throughout the clutch for cooler operation, smoother, more consistent performance and a longer life.

hen riding season starts, it can be all too easy for customers to simply hit the road and get in as many miles as possible while the weather is nice, ignoring any maintenance along the way. Luckily, motorcycles don’t require much to stay happy, and a few short steps in the garage can ensure a lot of smooth miles on the road. LIQUI MOLY has the oils and lubricants needed to keep bikes running their best, even at the peak of the season.
While regular motorcycle maintenance is critical, keeping things clear and crisp for the rider is also important. LIQUI MOLY’s Visor Cleaners works on helmet visors and windshields.
Of course, every well-running engine requires fresh oil. LIQUI MOLY Motorbike 4T 10W-40 Street oil will accommodate most metric bikes, making it an extremely versatile oil for dealers to have in stock. It can be sold to customers in 1-liter, 4-liter and 20-liter bottles, while shops can have 60-liter and 205-liter drums on hand. Some motorcycle maintenance is so quick and easy that riders don’t have an excuse for not doing it. One of those tasks is ensuring that the chain is protected and lubricated. LIQUI MOLY Motorbike Chain Lube is a fully-synthetic chain grease that is especially suitable for high-speed chains. It is extremely adhesive and water resistant, so it will cling to the chain and do its job even in bad weather. A quick application of the Motorbike Chain Lube can save customers frustration and dollars since a well-lubricated chain will last longer.
Regular motorcycle maintenance is a must, but rider maintenance is equally important. LIQUI MOLY Visor Cleaner takes care of both, making sure windscreens and helmet visors maintain a clear view of the road ahead. This cleaner can also be used inside the visor to keep fog from forming. The tough-butgentle cleaner removes dirt, insects, oil and silicone, leaving screens and visors gleaming and streak-free. ■

TIRES
Necessary Style
A Custom Indian Chief gets Ready to Roll Bike builder Paul Cox designs customs built to be ridden in such challenging environments as New York City. This means they need to perform so when it comes to tires, Cox chooses Avon. Looks for Cobra Chrome tires on his new Indian Chief build.
T
he streets of New York City aren’t exactly ideal for motorcycles. While building a custom bike called The Berserker, Paul Cox had the idea of mounting a set of dual-sport Avon Tyres. They helped him navigate the city streets a little easier, and they matched the aggressive style of the bike. That innovative approach to building bikes is part of what has made Cox’s 30-year relationship with Avon Tyres so intriguing. “There are a lot of things in the Avon range that I’ve found different uses for,” he says. “I have a broad mix of their tires in the shop today, for all different purposes.”
Don Argento, Avon Tyres National Sales Manager for North America, says, “Paul approaches each of his builds from a fresh perspective so each one is completely unique, requiring a different tire range. Having him as an Avon Tyres Brand Ambassador allows us to showcase his great use of our vast catalog, including the Cobra Chrome, Roadrider MKII, vintage and even dual-sport tires.” Currently, Cox is customizing a 2022 Indian Chief, which will have a set of Avon Cobra Chrome tires when it makes its debut in July. Cox is going with a vintage chopper style for the Chief, inspired by the bike itself. He says, “The frame they’ve engineered really speaks to the vintage round-tube configurations that they used to have. They really pared it down to be not like your typical late-model machine. It’s really been a pleasure to work with and modify.” At the same time, the Chief blends the old with the new, combining vintage inspiration with modern electronics and engineering, which is exactly why the Cobra Chrome tires are a perfect fit. They offer modern performance paired with a classic look, and Cox is mounting them on spoked rims for a real vintage vibe. “Within the Cobra Chrome range, we offer 67 sizes, including 14 in white wall and two trikes,” Argento notes. “This expansive availability allows Paul to really challenge himself without size limitations. The Cobra Chrome is aesthetically appealing with its unique snakeskin tread edging, and Paul is all about aesthetics. His builds are works of functional art that combine his incredible metal fabrication, paint designs and leather craft.”
Avon’s Cobra Chrome tires are as unique as they are functional. The detailed snakeskin tread edging gives an aggressive look while tire tech offers great handling and long-lasting wear.
Functional art really is the perfect term for a Paul Cox custom. Cox, who got his degree in art before becoming a bike builder, says it’s easy to spot one of his bikes. “The fact that I’ve ridden for the past 30 years in New York City, all that time riding every day in the city, really inspires a specific style out of necessity,” says Cox. “That speaks to the geometry of the chassis, power-to-weight ratio, gearing. All those things come together to create a style that people recognize as mine.” Of course, the Avon Tyres are part of that city street style, too. ■

Side-by-Side Exhausts and Tuners
Trinity Racing’s performance exhaust lineup includes slip-on mufflers and full systems. Both versions offer a nice horsepower boost as well as a style upgrade.
Finishes include black powder coat, brushed aluminum and a full Cerakote black.
As with most things with motors, Polaris and Can-Am customers are always clamoring for more power. That’s where Trinity Racing and its decades of hot-rod experience come into the picture by offering performance exhausts and custom tuning. Customers adding Trinity exhaust and fuel tuner can expect a 10 percent to 15 percent increase in horsepower over stock. All of the headers and Y-pipes used on Trinity Racing’s UTV exhausts are all made from mandrel-bent 304 stainless steel that is then hand-TIG welded.
S
tarting way back in the late 1980s, the go-fast team over at Trinity Racing started to modify Yamaha Banshees to make fistfuls of horsepower. From that point on, the company was known for providing customers with top-notch, high-performance engines that were as reliable as they were powerful. Fast forward 35 years and here they are, still building products that provide reliable horsepower, but the vehicles have changed. They still have four wheels, but the handlebars have now been replaced with a steering wheel. Performance side-by-sides have taken the world by storm – and for a good reason – they are fun! A Polaris RZR Turbo or Can-Am Maverick X3 RS makes upwards of 175 horsepower from the factory. All coming from a vehicle that weighs less than 2,000 pounds. That’s a whole lot of straight-off-the-showroom-floor performance.

In addition to offering a nice performance boost, those Trinity Racing exhausts also look great and sound even better. They also come with a great warranty so customers can rest assured that Trinity stands behind its broad product lineup. One example is the Trinity Racing Stage 5 exhaust, which are offered as a full system exhaust and as a slip-on muffler. With both versions, the tone is just right – not too loud, but your customers will know it’s there. Add a Trinity Stage 5 EFI tuner to really dial in performance. The Racing Stage 5 exhaust is offered in three different finish options – brushed aluminum, black powder coats and a full Cerakote black. The headers and Y-pipes are all made from mandrel-bent 304 stainless steel that is then hand-TIG welded. All Trinity Racing exhaust are designed and manufactured right here in Huntington Beach in southern California, the epicenter for off-road racing. ■

ast fall we had a chance to try out one of the new INTENSE TazerMX Pro E-bikes now being distributed by Parts Unlimited. We had it for a couple of weeks and what fun! We’ve been “gas and oil” people forever, but the moto-inspired TazerMX was too cool to not have one of our own. This new Parts Magazine E-bike is our ticket into the evergrowing power-assisted cycling craze and the whole staff is looking forward to trying it out. Thanks to everyone at INTENSE Cycles for their assistance with the initial setup, and also to Ryan Rose for his work to install the accessories.
There will be updates in future issues as we try new products being added to the Parts Unlimited Bicycle catalog, but in this issue we are showing just a few things that were immediately needed and seemed to be an easy upgrade. We suspect what we added here would be typical of what a retail buyer of a TazerMX Pro might want to do at the time of purchase. ■
» Lastly, be sure to check out the INTENSE Cycles website at

RIDING IN STYLE
BRANDS JUMP INTO E-BIKE APPAREL
A
s E-bikes continue to grow in popularity, so do the options for rider gear. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that motorcycle brands 100%, Alpinestars and THOR, are either jumping into the bicycle scene or have already been there for a long time. Those brands are already familiar with the things that off-road riders require, whether the discipline is motorcycles or eMTB.
Comfort, mobility, abrasion-resistant materials in key areas, easy care and other factors that play a big role in off-road and motocross apparel can be found in E-bike gear, as well. Of course, for all the similarities, there are some big differences between the two markets. With all of that in mind, here’s a look at the E-bike jerseys, pants, shorts and pads available from 100%, Alpinestars and THOR.
ALPINESTARS Alpinestars got its start in the MTB world back in 2004, when the brand partnered with Honda for the UCI-Downhill Mountain Bike World Cup. By 2010, Alpinestars was ready to turn those specialty bicycle products into widelydistributed gear. The Drop 6.0 and Drop 4.0 jerseys are both designed for endurance racing. The polyfabric wicks moisture away from the rider’s body and dries quickly. The Drop 6.0, which is available with short or long sleeves, includes mesh panels for extra airflow, plus pockets that have a built-in cleaning cloth for glasses. The coordinating Drop 6.0 shorts have stretch fabric and pockets for stowing essentials. The Alps 6.0 long-sleeve jersey also has enhanced moisture-wicking and quick-dry properties. The main shell has four-way stretch fibers for ultimate flexibility, and mesh panels in key areas keep a rider cool.
Alpinestars Drop 6.0 jersey
The Alpinestars Racer v2 short-sleeve jersey coordinates with the Racer pants or shorts. The lightweight, moisture-wicking jersey is cut longer in the rear for full coverage, and the pants have side patches in high-abrasion areas. Laser-cut front air vents on the pants keep things cool, while the water-repellent treatment keeps things dry. The Paragon Lite and Paragon Plus elbow and knee protectors are lightweight, durable and flexible guards. The perforated pads slip into a mesh pocket, so the pads do their job while providing some ventilation. The Paragon Plus protectors include rip-stop fabric reinforcements for extra durability.

100% The jersey, pants and shorts styles available from 100% range from casual looking to streamlined for speed, but there are plenty of E-bike features to be found across the entire collection. The Airmatic jersey balances casual looks with high-tech fabrics. The technical heather fabric looks like an everyday T-shirt, but the fabric is designed for the rigors of riding. A reflective logo on the back adds visibility, a drop tail ensures back-end coverage and an internal goggle wipe helps riders keep a clear view of the terrain ahead. Both shortsleeve and ¾-sleeve styles are available. The Airmatic shorts look casual, too, but the DWR nylon/spandex fabric has a four-way stretch for a lightweight feel and outstanding mobility. Stretch-mesh venting enhances the flexibility while increasing airflow. On the opposite end of the Airmatic, the Celium jersey and shorts have a more streamlined, traditional racer look. The vented Celium jersey has anti-microbial properties and an internal goggle wipe. The Celium shorts have four-way stretch fabric held together with fully-sewn, taped seams for absolute comfort and durability. At the waist, a BOA fit system gives a tailored fit. 100% also has women’s gear, including the Ridecamp shirt with short or long sleeves and the Ridecamp shorts. The polyester mesh fabric of the jersey is excellent at keeping moisture at bay, and the two-way stretch twill fabric of the shorts is topped with a cargo pocket, zippered pocket and reflective tape.
100% Airmatic jersey and shorts
THOR THOR is a newcomer to the bicycle scene, debuting its line of functional riding apparel in August of 2020. This might be a new market for THOR, but of course the brand has been a pioneer in motocross for decades, and they have applied the same design and materials approach to the bicycle enthusiasts’ needs. The THOR MTB collection of shorts and jerseys really show off the company’s motocross roots. The shorts are constructed from In-Motion fabric, which is tough yet lightweight and flexible for a rider to move around in. The long-sleeve and short-sleeve jerseys have a performance fit with hybrid set-in sleeve design for mobility, plus moisture-wicking, breathable materials keep things cool when the ride heats up. THOR is very proud to host a special collection in collaboration with INTENSE bicycles, boasting great graphics and factory team colors that celebrate a collective passion for racing at the highest levels of sport. The INTENSE collection offers the same features, materials and functionality of the core THOR lineup, plus a performance-oriented pant with In-Motion main body chassis, laser-cut ventilation and zippered pockets. On the protective front, the THOR Comp XP elbow and knee guards feature soft impact protectors that fit easily under riding gear. Ergonomic Airprene panels enable airflow in tandem with the vented nylon mesh chassis material. The backside of the pad is sculpted for a comfortable fit and easy mobility. ■

t used to be that options were limited when it came to gloves that were lightweight and comfortable, but also protective when necessary. Thanks to modern materials, the choices have expanded. Icon’s three new gloves are proof of that. Each of the new gloves offers something different – the Airform gloves have a more traditional motorcycle glove look, the Stormhawk gloves are waterproof and the Hooligan gloves are sublimated textile. All three of them do share something in common, which is the incorporation of Ax Laredo. Ax Laredo looks like leather, but it is actually made from advanced poly microfibers that are every bit as durable as natural leather. Ax Laredo provides excellent abrasion resistance as well as moisture management, because no one wants sweaty palms. The material is also lightweight and flexible, so riders can keep a comfortable grip on the bars. The summer-weight Icon Airform gloves combine classic motorcycle gloves with a sportbike mentality. The entire chassis is made from Ax Laredo, and the backhand is laser perforated to ensure plenty of airflow while on the go. The palm, meanwhile, has an extra layer of Ax Laredo for an added dose of durability. A D3O knuckle insert adds yet another layer of defense, but thanks to the materials and technology of D3O, the insert has a low profile so the Airform gloves never look bulky. The Airform gloves are available in black or black/tan.
Icon’s Airform glove is a summer-weight option that features a chassis built from Ax Laredo and a D3O knuckle insert for extra durability and protection.
The Icon Stormhawk
Icon is a Portland native, where it’s more likely to be rainy than sunny, so it’s no wonder the brand has a waterproof glove. The Stormhawk comes in black (to match the storm clouds or Icon’s aesthetic, it remains to be seen), and the outer chassis is made of a lightweight, abrasion-resistant polyester. Under that is a Hipora waterproof insert. The palm is made of Ax Laredo, as are the overlays in key areas. A rigid knuckle plate and a D3O knuckle insert add to the toughness, without adding bulk. Riders can choose to go low-key with the black or gray options for the Hooligan glove, but the nine color schemes include day-glow options as well as the Subdermal, which is a skeletal style statement. The high-density colors are sublimated on a lightweight vented polyester mesh backhand, which is ideal for hot weather. The palm is, of course, made of Ax Laredo. Icon designed the Hooligan as an urban sport riding glove, designed for style as well as flexibility and comfort. An internal padded knuckle is low-profile, yet sturdy. ■

DRIVE BELTS
Competitive Drive Race-Proven Belts
The G-Force RedLine CVT range of drive belts are designed for today’s lineup of powerful ATVs and UTVs. The belts are engineered to provide increased durability, great heat resistance and long-lasting performance.
A
s the performance characteristics of modern ATVs and UTVs increase, so do the possibilities. When it comes to competition, hauling heavy loads or simply working hard at having fun, offroad vehicles need to be ready to go for any kind of riding as well as any kind of conditions. Without a reliable drive belt, though, no one is going to get anywhere, which is why Gates introduced the G-Force RedLine™ CVT belt. Engineered to stand up to the wildest rides, these belts keep vehicles moving in even the most challenging terrain and during the most competitive riding. The G-Force RedLine CVT belt line was extensively tested in both the lab and the field, including rigorous use in the most grueling of testing scenarios – racing. During development, the belts were put through their paces by a group of athletes who ensured that they would perform in all extreme conditions. Now, racers across all major series continue to prove the toughness of the G-Force RedLine belt during every single race weekend. Today’s off-road vehicles have increased heat and power, which is why G-Force RedLine belts are made with a patented, fiber-reinforced Ethylene Elastomer compound. That formula provides outstanding heat resistance, increased durability, a higher effective operating temperature and a greater load-carrying capacity. The durability aspect is a big deal, with a G-Force RedLine belt lasting up to three-times longer than an OEM belt thanks to its resistance to cracks and heat. The G-Force RedLine belts are designed to help ATV and UTV engines achieve peak performance. They deliver better acceleration and higher top speeds while also

ensuring less speed ratio and energy loss in extreme off-road environments. All of that is good news for the many racers who choose to upgrade their vehicles with a G-Force RedLine belt. Another piece of good news is that Gates is committed to supporting off-road racing through key sponsorships. In recent years, Gates has supported pro racers such as Lacrecia Beurrier, Marc Burnett, Kyle Chaney, Michael Dunnagan, Scottie Lawrence, Cody and Hunter Miller, Jordan Phillips and Casey Sims, along with promising youth-class racers like Dallas and Deegan Gonzalez and Brooklyn Singleton. This year, Gates is also committed to sponsoring entire series to ensure racers have a place to compete. The company is the official belt sponsor of the TexPlex SxS Race Series and the MidAmerica Outdoors and CrosXs UTV Race Series. ■

Quality Replacement Pads and Discs
The SP brake pads from SBS feature a sintered, HH-rated friction compound that offers strong initial bite, easy modulation and powerful, fade-free stopping performance.
With SBS pads, the backing plate features NRS bonding technology to ensure a secure connection between the carrier plate and friction material. NRS is a matrix of steel hooks raised from the backing plate, and the hooks mold into the friction material during the sintering process to create a super strong mechanical bond. NRS doesn’t improve brake performance, but serves as an added feature to ensure the friction material stays connected to the backing plate under all conditions. All of SBS’s street-use replacement brake pads are ECE R90 certified, which assures your customers of the quality and safety of the products by way of intensive third-party evaluation. This includes dynamometer testing for rotative speed, brake torque, brake line pressure, braking time, and brake rotor temperature, among other parameters.

or every burst of acceleration from a handful of throttle, there’s a need to slow down, and for every hill climbed there’s a descent. For those situations, your customers can confidently turn to SBS SP brake pads and Standard discs, which meet or exceed OEM performance and durability and are available for a wide range of sportbikes, Adventure bikers and cruisers. The SP brake pads from SBS utilize state-of-the-art NRS-equipped backing plates and a sintered, HH-rated friction compound that offers strong initial bite to give instant brake feel, easy modulation, and powerful, fadefree stopping performance. They’re an excellent option for replacing worn-out OEM pads, or an easy upgrade to remedy lackluster brake function. For the Adventure segment, SP-compound pads are available for the BMW R1250 GS, Ducati Multistrada V4S, Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin, Triumph 850 Tiger Sport, and 1200 Tiger XCA, as well as for other popular models.

Brake discs don’t need replacing as often as pads, but when they do, SBS’s Standard discs are a great option. Built to the quality for which SBS is famous, the Standard disc range features an OEM-like round shape with either a fixed or floating construction, depending on the application. Cut from high-carbon stainless steel, Standard discs provide quiet, vibration-free operation, reliable stopping power in all conditions, and can be installed using OEM hardware. Whether it’s replacement pads or rotors, regular maintenance or an intentional upgrade, SBS has a high-quality range of stopping hardware. ■

products, speak to your Parts Unlimited sales representative and check out the Street and Off-Road catalogs. The NRS bonding technology ensure a secure connection between the carrier plate and friction material. The matrix of steel hooks mold into the friction material during the sintering process to create a super strong mechanical bond.
SBS’s SP compound is produced from a mixture of metallic, abrasive and lubricating materials formulated to provide excellent all-around performance and durability. This proprietary amalgam is compressed while simultaneously being heated by electric current – a process known as conductive sintering – to form a metal matrix that’s bonded to the backing plate.

Star of the Show
A Championship Clutch Developed in Racing What’s Inside: Star Racing Yamaha’s Justin Cooper and Colt Nichols counted on Rekluse’s Core Manual TorqDrive clutches for chasing after – and winning – their respective 2021 250 Supercross championships.
C
hampionships are won through a mix of talent, top-notch equipment and plenty of hard work. Star Racing Yamaha knows how important it is to build a bike that will give its riders a performance edge, which is why the team relies on the Core Manual TorqDrive clutch from Rekluse. Great equipment is one of the reasons why Star Racing Yamaha is celebrating Justin Cooper’s 250 SX West championship and Colt Nichols’s 250 SX East championship. Cooper and Nichols brought the talent, and Star Racing Yamaha provided the bikes worthy of the top step of
the podium. Core Manual TorqDrive is used on all of the team’s 250 and 450 bikes. Rekluse’s TorqDrive friction disks are so thin that as many as four additional disks can be included compared to a stock setup. By increasing the number of disks, torque is increased, too, without the need to add stiffer pressure plate springs. Power delivery is improved and there is less clutch fade, allowing riders and racers alike to get improved performance and a more consistent lever feel. It’s fitting that Star Racing Yamaha has taken the Core Manual TorqDrive to two championships, because Rekluse developed its TorqDrive technology in professional racing. Your customers can also benefit from Rekluse’s friction disk technology with a TorqDrive Clutch Pack, which allows the stock disks to be swapped with the thinner TorqDrive disks for better power delivery, reduced clutch slipping and smoother shifting. ■

etting the power from the motor to the rear wheel is Sunstar’s business. The company carries sprockets, chains and complete chain kits for street and off-road riding, with options including direct OEM replacements and premium race-proven components.
Sunstar’s complete chain kits include a drive sprocket, rear sprocket and chain for street and off-road riding.
Sunstar Powerdrive countershaft sprockets are made from case-hardened chromoly steel for excellent strength and durability, and the surface treatment prohibits rust and corrosion. Most racing applications have drilled holes to reduce weight.
Customers can choose a Sunstar steel OEM replacement rear sprocket – made from heat-treated high-carbon steel for maximum reliability – or upgrade to the Works Triplestar aluminum rear sprocket. Blending longevity and light weight, these aerospace-grade 7075 T-6 aluminum sprockets are designed for ultimate performance. Weight reduction holes keep things light, and Sunstar’s exclusive tooth-valley design provides 50 percent more chain contact area.
Among Sunstar’s many chain options are the MXR, XTG and RTG1 Works premium chains. The MXR Works nonsealed chain can handle the demands of off-road competition thanks to TripleStar treated ultra-hard pins and heat-treated components for excellent strength. It is also lighter than a stock chain.
The XTG Works TripleGuard sealed chain is built for offroad racing, too, and this premium chain has Sunstar’s TripleGuard sealed ring design for consistent protection and performance in every environment. The RTG1 Works TripleGuard sealed chain is Sunstar’s top road racing chain, offering strength, durability and light weight. Sunstar offers complete chain kits in Standard and Plus options, with a drive sprocket, rear sprocket and chain. The Plus kits include an XTG or RTG1 chain. ■

ProX chains are made in Japan from Japanese steel. The plates, bushings and rollers are all heat-treated for better longevity. Hardened pins and shot-peened rollers further increase a ProX chain’s strength and stress resistance. In all, a ProX chain gives a rider incredible durability and confidence. Both are available in a standard or gold finish, which ProX says is the most popular choice for riders. Not only are a lot of different riding styles served by ProX chains, but a lot of bike sizes, too. In addition to the huge
X-ring chains are especially known for their extreme strength, outlasting a standard-link OE chain by 150 percent or more. This performance-minded O-ring shape results in less contact between the O-ring’s surface and the chain plates. Grease is still sealed in place, but the design reduces friction for smoother operation. ■

Race-Proven Premium Rotors
128 Braking knows that by sponsoring race teams, the company is testing its products in the most challenging environments possible. This approach has earned the company 128 racing titles.
S
ponsoring race teams is about more than just getting a brand name out there. For Braking, it’s the perfect way to test products in the most challenging environments. Braking used racing to develop the EPTA on-road and off-road rotors, which give riders the same braking technology as the world’s top racers use.
Braking is supporting US teams in both motorcycle and UTV racing. Three AMA Supercross teams are carrying the Braking banner this season: Monster Energy Star Yamaha, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing, and Kawasaki Pro Circuit Racing.
In roadracing, Braking is supporting Monster Energy Attack Yamaha, who is fielding AMA Superbike veterans Josh Herrin and Jake Gagne.
Braking’s Batfly rotors will be on the Beau Baron Team’s entries in WORCS this year, and Adam McGill will use them in GNCC. This year, Braking is sponsoring more than 25 teams in a variety of racing disciplines, letting racers all over the world show off the Italian-made EPTA rotors and, hopefully, add to Braking’s 128 racing titles. The EPTA (Enhanced Performance Torque Application) on-road and off-road rotors feature a braking track that provides optimal heat dissipation, ensuring a steady friction coefficient for predicable, consistent braking characteristics. The design of the disc accomplishes this by providing more controlled radial/axial movement so there is a better load transfer between the braking track and the carrier. The temperature of the disc remains consistent across the entire surface to eliminate any hot spots. The pin-free design eliminates potential pin deformation, too. ■

The OptiMate 2 DUO battery charger provides three times more charging power than the 1 DUO. This is ideal for charging larger, more powerful batteries.
The successful no-brainer maintainer OptiMate 1 DUO which is also co-branded by Moose Utility Division and Moose Racing, is great for charging and maintaining 12V lead-acid (wet-cell, GEL or AGM) or 12.8V Lithium Ferrous Phosphate (LFP) batteries. Simply hook it up to the battery and the device will figure out what type of battery is connected and then deliver the right charge. Now there is a faster, easy-to-use power charger and maintainer option, the OptiMate 2 DUO, which delivers 2 Amps of charge current, three times more than the 1 DUO. That’s ideal for charging those larger ATV, UTV and Adventure motorcycle batteries faster.
The DUO line-up has also expanded into solar power, with 10W, 20W and 40W OptiMate Solar DUO chargers able to charge any 12V / 12.8V battery.
