29 And Counting

This issue is an extra-special one for me and my team here at Parts Magazine. You may have noticed the little text line on the front cover that reads: “Vol. 29, #12”? That means that this is the 12th edition of our 29th year of publishing this magazine for Parts Unlimited.

Twenty-nine years? Yes. Way back in 1993, I had been in business for a few years, publishing a dealer newsletter, plus a magazine about vintage and classic motorcycles and a book on the history of the Daytona 200. The business was doing okay, but not great.

Having grown up in a family that were motorcycle dealers for over 30 years, I came up with an idea to take my publishing knowledge at that time and mix it with my past experiences growing up and working in our stores in the San Diego area. Back then, I always let others handle necessary things like sales of new and used bikes, financing, insurance and service. My favorite area of the motorcycle business has always been the Accessory Department. Every rider needs riding gear for safety and comfort, and the endless array of aftermarket products allows owners of motorcycles, ATVs, UTVs, snowmobiles, E-bikes and more to personalize their machines just the way they want them. I remember Fred Fox saying once that “Every motorcycle sold is the start of a new project.” That is so true.

It was Fred who I went to with an idea for my company to publish a magazine for Parts Unlimited that would be exclusively about aftermarket products and what they do to sell them to the dealers. I figured, who better to be connected with than Fred Fox and Parts Unlimited? So I presented the idea to him in mid-1993 and he loved it. He wanted to make sure I knew, however, that it was only a test when he agreed to back our premier issue of Parts Magazine at the beginning of 1994. He said, “Let’s see how it goes.”

Luckily it all went well, and the rest is history. Fred came back after the first couple of issues and said the feedback from his reps and dealers was great. And we were hearing the same thing from our advertisers. So we kept producing Parts Magazine issues and a year later Fred said, “My Drag Specialties people want a magazine for the V-Twin business.” So, we added Drag Specialties Magazine in 1995, and in 2010 Parts Europe Magazine for their new Parts Europe warehouse. What an amazing run this has been to publish these three titles, and to work with all of the great people at LeMans Corporation. I have said it before how thankful I am to Fred Fox for giving me the green light to start the publication. I could never have wished for a better customer to work with.

Looking ahead, a publishing anniversary is more than a one-time event, it will take us all of 2023 to properly celebrate our 30th year. The next issue will get the party started, and this time next year, we’ll have 30 years completed. Thank you to all of Parts Unlimited’s dealers, sales reps, vendors, staff, and management. We look forward to working with you again in 2023 and beyond! ■

A Championship Season for Moose Racing and THOR Riders

OFF-ROAD ROUNDUP – 2022 SEASON RECAP

In a season of attrition, two stars rose above the rest in the 2022 Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) Series. Moose Racing’s Rachael Archer and Jordan Ashburn might have both been unlikely picks at the midway point of the season, but when it all came down to being there every weekend, both riders stayed healthy, stayed focused and fought their way to the top of the most prestigious off-road series in the US.

For WXC Champion Rachael Archer of the AmPro Yamaha team, the season started and ended well, but a midseason struggle almost saw it all slip away. “It’s been the most stressful, crazy, emotional year of my life,” Archer explained. “We started off with a bang and then my work ethic bit me in the butt and I got EBV virus (Epstein-Barr) which totally drained me and left me showing up to race on empty for about two months.”

A dismal 10th-place finish after a crash and bike damage at round four was a crippling blow to her championship hopes, and Archer dug deep to cling to the podium for the next several rounds. “After summer break and time to heal I came back with a bang winning a few more races and the GNCC WXC championship! I cannot explain how much that means to me,” said Archer. With a powerhouse team like AmPro Yamaha and a world-class sponsor like Moose Racing in her corner, Archer had the tools she needed to pour her heart and determination into winning her first-ever GNCC WXC National Championship, something the New Zealander long dreamed about.

“Four years of chasing a dream and years of dedication to get here and I’m stoked to finally wear the number one!” Archer exclaimed. “To the whole AmPro Yamaha pit crew, my parents for letting me move to the other side of the world when I was 17 to chase a dream, everyone that’s been a part of this journey—thank you!”

For Ashburn of the Magna1 Motorsports Husqvarna team, the road to his first GNCC Overall Championship was about steady perseverance through a brutal season that brought down a number of top racers.

Ashburn’s first-ever GNCC overall win came at the Snowshoe GNCC, and another win came two rounds later at the Burr Oak, where the Moose Racing athlete clinched the title. “Words can’t express the excitement of this accomplish ment,” said the 31-year-old. “I tried to focus on having consistent rides all year, be on the box week in and week out and just stay healthy and I think it worked out this year.”

Joining in the domination of all things off-road, THOR racers also continue to shine from coast to coast, with FMF KTM’s Josh Toth claiming the U.S. Sprint Enduro Championship, and closing out the National Enduro Championship with a string of podiums. The icing on the cake was the overall win at the finale, where Toth also collected the $8,000 bounty for a six-for-six sweep of every test.

Out West, it was pure domination from Dante Oliveira’s inferno. The FMF KTM racer racked up 15 national wins

“Four years of chasing a dream and years of dedication to get here and I’m stoked to finally wear the number one,” said Moose Racing/Yamaha rider Rachael Archer of her 2022 GNCC WXC Championship. Moose Racing/Husqvarna rider Jordan Ashburn fought hard this season, an effort that paid off in his earning his first ever GNCC Overall Championship.

LEFT: THOR/KTM rider Dante Oliveira has dominated the off-road scene in 2022, racking up 15 national wins between the WORCS and NGPC series. Here he is showing off the hardware to prove his prowess at round 9 of the NGPC series, Pros pectors MC Grand Prix.

between the World Off-Road Championship Series (WORCS) and the National Grand Prix Championship (NGPC) Series, helping himself to both championships. With two titles in his pocket already, Oliveira decided to challenge himself at the final round of the NGPC Series in Lake Havasu by racing a 300cc two-stroke. No matter the strokes, the outcome was the same, with the THOR rider dominating the field.

Another star among the FMF KTM ranks, Canadian Trystan Hart is cementing his place as the next big thing in the Hard Enduro world. Hart had a banner year in the AMA U.S. Hard Enduro Series, winning everything in sight to put his stamp on the overall championship. Hart went on to face the world in the FIM Hard Enduro World Championship, and finished a remarkable fourth in the Red Bull Romaniacs, and won the Red Bull TKO in Tennessee. ■

Mees Successfully Defends His Crown at Volusia Half-Mile Finale II

That near catastrophe came in the Semi when Mees made the save of the season – perhaps the save of his career – after hitting a bump and going airborne and sideways with his front wheel loft high in the air. Somehow, he not only stayed up on two wheels but made a pass to take the checkered flag first.

With that drama out of the way, Mees basically just had to show up for the Main to win the title. Instead, he chose to fight, executing passes on the likes of Jarod Vanderkooi and rookie hero Dallas Danielsto to finish on the podium in third.

Drag Specialties/Parts Unlimited/Indian rider Jared Mees put the finishing touches on his successful title defense as a thrilling 2022 Progressive Ameri can Flat Track season came to its conclusion at the Mission Volusia Half-Mile Finale II in October at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Florida.

The defending Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle king was well positioned to retain the #1 plate after out dueling his title rivals. As a result, he only needed to avoid catastrophe in order to add his seventh career premier-class crown to his already incredible résumé.

Already firmly established as one of the greatest riders in the history of the sport, Mees now boasts a remarkable assortment of accomplishments, including the ‘12, ‘14, ‘15, ‘17, ‘18, ‘21, and ‘22 Grand National Championships, the 2009 and 2011 GNC1 Twins Championships, and the 2012 GNC1 Singles Championship.

“They are all sweet, they are all awesome, and they are all a lot of hard work,” Mees said. “This one is a little different because of what we were up against at the beginning of the year. The Indian Motorcycle backed by Progressive was strong all year long. My team did a phenomenal job. I was able to go out there and race hard. I’ll be honest, I really wanted to cap off the year with a win.” ■

Provisional 2023 Progressive American Flat Track Schedule

AMA Pro Racing announced today an 18-round provisional schedule for the 2023 Progressive American Flat Track season boasting venues his toric and new and featuring an impressive balance in terms of its blend of disciplines, geography and pacing.

Immediately noticeable is a more compact time frame over which the title fights will be waged, fitting all 18 rounds in between the return to Daytona International Speedway for a doubleheader during Daytona Bike Week in early March and an epic Labor Day Weekend doubleheader season finale at the series’ crown jewel, the Springfield Mile, in early September. The overall result is a significantly more consistent slate and superior momentum, with no more than three weeks between any two rounds, a gap which occurs just twice all season long.

Featuring five Miles, five Half-Miles, four Short Tracks, three TTs, (and one event still to be announced), the ’23 schedule is also intriguing in the cadence of events. The ordering of track types presents increased opportunity for dynamic championship battles, encouraging win streaks and come

backs alike. All four STs take place in the opening six races, while the three TTs will take place in a span of 13 days near the conclusion of the season, with the Half-Miles and Miles nicely divided up throughout the campaign.

Hitting locations on both coasts and numerous points in between, the diversity of locales supports both the sport’s growth and continued strength. So too does its mix of historic races, long-time mainstays, returning favorites, and a number of all-new stops, including Senoia, Georgia; Ventura, California; and Bridgeport, New Jersey.

The 2023 Progressive AFT schedule will again celebrate the country’s motorcycle rallies and national holidays, holding events as part of Daytona Bike Week, Arizona Bike Week, and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, along with races to be held during Mother’s Day weekend, Father’s Day weekend, Memorial Day weekend and the aforementioned Labor Day weekend finale. ■

» Confirmation on the venues for the TBA events and ticket sales for all rounds will be available in the weeks ahead at www.americanflattrack.com.

Just like the Motocross of Nations, the THOR Pit Bike of Nations is an international affair attracting fans from all over the world.

The THOR semi is always a popular attraction.

2022 THOR Pit Bike of Nations

With the return of the Motocross of Nations to RedBud in 2022 also came the return of the THOR Pit Bike of Nations. The brainchild of event organizer and “voice of LeMans” Rob Buydos, the 2022 event had the opportunity for a re-do after the less-than-ideal muddy conditions in 2018, and even though the THOR Pit Bike of Nations was a success four years ago, the recent running was the much-anticipated success that Buydos had been waiting for.

“With the perfect weather we were able to deliver some world-class entertainment and competition. It was really rewarding to see it all come to fruition,” said Buydos. “In 2018, it was muddy and stuff, but it was still honestly one of the most exciting things I’ve ever been a part of in racing. And, then to have the chance to do it again but without all the challenges of the weather was like, ‘Ahh, see? I told you this is what it was going to look like.’”

Though the conditions were far different, the outcome was the same, with the American team emerging on top.

Riders Ryan Villopoto, Carson Brown and Willy Browning

went 1-2-1 for the overall ahead of Great Britain in second and France in third. The teams all raced Yamaha TT-R110 motorcycles provided by Motozilli Yamaha and prepped identically with BBR accessories, Dunlop tires and Pro Circuit exhaust. The spec race bikes were key in attracting worldclass talent to the exhibition.

“One of the biggest draws for them was that they knew all the bikes were exactly the same,” Buydos explained. “We find out who the best pit bike racers are, not who has the most money spent. They knew that the folks at MX Sports were going to have a big presence and have everybody all entertained and revved up.

“The guys at THOR really had a great time. They used their whole vendor row interaction with the fans to really feature the pit bike experience and it really paid big dividends with their activation.”

The racing on the track was just as entertaining as the competition (read: smack talk) off the track. “Oh yeah,” said Buydos with a laugh. “If you had been up there and hearing it, you would have been howling. They’re hilarious when they get going. Guys like Villopoto and them, they’re great at it.”

In all there were 13 countries included, and more international interest in putting on the THOR Pit Bike of Nations at future events. “We’re ready,” says Buydos. “With the help of companies like THOR and Parts Unlimited, we can put this right at all these events and really bring the level of excitement. If we get the call, we’re ready to go.” ■

That’s a Wrap!

With 12 wins in 20 races, you’d think Jake Gagne and his Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha YZF-R1 would have dominated the 2022 MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship for the second straight season, but that wasn’t the case.

Tarnish those 12 wins with three non-finishes and suddenly the season wasn’t as shiny as it appears from the outside. That was a good thing for race fans as the championship fight ended up going down to the final race of the season at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

So, how did it get that close? In addition to his three nonfinishes, Gagne also had two un-Gagne like finishes in iffy weather conditions at Road America in Wisconsin in June. Un-Gagne in this case was a fifth and a fourth in the two races, which would amount to a career weekend for some. Gagne’s two race crashes (while leading), his lone mechanical failure (at Circuit of The Americas) and the aforementioned fourth and fifth would still have been enough to give him the championship early if not for a certain Italian by the name of Danilo Petrucci.

Coming into his rookie season of MotoAmerica racing, most figured that Petrucci and his Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC Panigale V4 R would be fast enough to win races. What they didn’t count would be how utterly consistent the twotime MotoGP winner was. Petrucci won five races in 2022, two of which came when Gagne crashed in front of him, and when he didn’t win, he was still on the podium. How’s this for a season? Five wins and 16 total podiums in 20 races.

Take Gagne out of the picture and Petrucci would have been a runaway champion.

Unfortunately for Petrucci, right when he needed it most, he faltered. In the final round. While Gagne won the allimportant race one at Barber, Petrucci was third and nowhere near the front. That meant that Gagne didn’t need to win race two, so finishing second to his teammate Cameron Petersen was just fine. Petrucci, meanwhile, was fourth. Game over.

Petersen, with his two wins on the season and 12 total podiums, ended up knocking fellow South African Mathew Scholtz out of third in the championship, thanks in part to a mid-season slump by the Westby Racing rider. While Scholtz had issues, Petersen was on the podium in seven straight races midseason.

Scholtz also won a race in 2022 (at Road America) and ended the season with 11 podiums, but a broken wrist kept him out of race two at Brainerd International Raceway – even though he was fifth in race one with the injury. That was a swing weekend for the Petersen/Scholtz battle as Petersen came away with a second and a third.

The consistent Hector Barbera ended the season fifth in the title chase on his Tytlers Cycle Racing BMW M 1000 RR, the Spaniard failing to score only twice in the season while standing on the podium once. ■

» The 2023 MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship will kick off with round one at Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia, on April 21-23.

RIDING GEAR

Footwear Forward Four New Street Boot Styles

ICON has just launched four new boots as part of its winter 2022 release, so any customers looking for boots for wet-weather riding and for the coming spring should check them out.

Three of the new boot designs are waterproof, including the Patrol3 WP, Alcan WP and Slabtown WP. The fourth design, the Overlord Vented, is designed for maximum airflow.

All four of the boot styles are CE certified, and they are designed with the features one would expect from ICON. One of those features is a mid-foot shank that goes across the ball of the foot. While the standard shank provides heel to toe strength, this extra mid-foot shank adds sideto-side support to prevent twisting or crushing from the side. Thanks to the design, though, walking in the boots still feels perfectly natural, and they are made for all-day comfort, both on and off the bike.

The Patrol3 WP boots look more like a pair of sneakers, and both the name and the style are hallmarks of ICON boots. The TechTuff leather upper features a polyurethane coating that keeps the leather well-protected in the wet.

The BOA (Boot Opening Adjustment) lacing system lets riders dial in the right fit without any fear of laces coming undone or loose ends flapping around. The BOA system has a lifetime warranty that is handled directly by BOA (the company that designs the lacing system), adding an extra layer of customer service at no hassle to dealers.

Like all the other waterproof boots available from ICON, the Patrol3 WP boots feature eVent technology, which has crossed over from the outdoor clothing segment to motorcycling. Larger pores result in more efficient moisture evaporation, which keeps “swamp foot” at bay.

The Patrol3 WP boots, like the other new boots, have D3O ankle inserts plus toe and heel cups for additional coverage.

ICON designed the Alcan WP boots as a taller, mid-calf waterproof option ideal for Adventure riders. The TechTuff leather upper is paired with a stretch fabric on the back of the ankle for more comfort both on and off the bike. The BOA lacing system is cleverly hidden under a front flap that adds a sleek look.

The Slabtown WP boots have distinctive ICON style, blending a street-boot look with motocross-style buckles. The all-leather upper has a nubuck finish, and D3O ankle inserts are hiding beneath. The top of the ankle is lined with neoprene and padding for a soft, flexible fit.

The Overlord Vented boots are futuristic looking and ready for action. These boots includes a 3D-knit poly upper with lots of ventilation. Under that are the expected toe and heel cups, D3O ankle inserts and a dual shank. The BOA lacing system tops it all off. ■

Kicking Down Prices Value-Packed Boots and Riding Gear

When riders are under the helmet and twisting the throttle, the focus of adrenaline and freedom of escape completely occupy the mind. However, once the helmet comes off, everyday realities come rushing back in. Cost is a common concern for many customers, but thankfully the passionate enthusiasts at THOR are committed to not letting cost keep people from doing what they love.

Quality off-road riding boots are a must-have for all types of riders, from moto-ripping professionals to weekend warriors. Many of the latter, those customers who need gear for their two days of riding they get each week, want to get out and enjoy their machines without over spending or sacrificing quality and protection with their equipment. THOR’s Blitz XP boot delivers just that.

Blitz XP boots only been offer riders a high-value option designed and built by the seasoned gear experts at THOR, but that value has now been elevated with a price drop. No, that wasn’t a typo. It’s not common to see something actually come down in price, but THOR has achieved this through its design and manufacturing practices to help dealers pass savings down to riders.

These boots retain impressive comfort and protection uti lizing pre-curved, injection molded construction with four, fully adjustable straps for maximized custom fit capabilities. A medial abrasion plate, integrated shift protection, metal toe cap and fully synthetic calf overlays all help ensure durable strength and protection. In fact, Blitz XP boots are tested and certified to EN 13634:2017 standards.

On top of long-lasting functionality, Blitz XP boots are available in five different colorways, from neutral to loud, catering to almost any rider’s style. Plus, at a new U.S. retail price of $99.95 for men’s and women’s sizes and $89.95 for youth sizes, that value is tough to beat.

Joining boots in that category of must-have riding gear are gloves – after all, motorcycle operation starts up top with the hands. Glove preference can vary rider to rider, from minimalist and flexible, to maximum coverage and padding. No matter the preference, THOR has your customers covered.

The Agile gloves live true to their name – light and agile with a minimalist chassis design. They provide an athleteinspired fit and function for riders that offers a connected feeling with their motorcycle. Sharing a similar light and functional design, Sector gloves provide simplistic performance in a classic motocross glove design.

Adding a bit more padding and structure, Draft gloves from THOR are constructed of a single-layer AX Suede palm and silicone backhand, creating a more structured feeling in the glove. Spectrum gloves deliver a happy medium between structure and natural flexibility, featuring a lightly padded palm and direct-injected, TPR elements on the top hand and finger.

Stepping the protective layer up another notch are Rebound gloves with an incorporated D3O knuckle, an advanced impact protection material. These gloves can certainly be beneficial for your long-mile, Adventure and off-road customers who need that extra level of insurance. Finally, if you’re in an area where your customers are facing dropping temperatures this winter, Spectrum cold weather gloves from THOR can maintain function-critical warmth without sacrificing control.

CLUTCH PRODUCTS

Now’s the Time for Clutch Upgrades Winter Refresh

Winter is here, which means downtime for many off-road enthusiasts and the chance to freshen up their motorcycle and ATV engines for the 2023 riding season. Among the components that receive attention are the clutch assembly parts. This includes clutch baskets, pressure plates, clutch springs, and often even complete clutch kits. One of the most popular product names for those components is Barnett, a company that’s been in the motorcycle clutch business since 1948.

Here are some of the many Barnett clutch components for dealers to consider for their customers. Start with Barnett’s new heavy-duty Belleville-type clutch spring for 2012-2022 KTM 450cc and 500cc off-road models. These direct-replacement springs are made of heat-treated high-carbon steel that Barnett says is 15 percent stiffer than stock springs. Dealers can also give those KTM clutch assemblies a complete refresher with a Barnett Dirt Digger clutch plate kit to match the new Belleville spring.

In fact, Barnett has Dirt Digger high-performance clutch kits for a variety of off-road bikes and ATVs. Every kit features clutch plates made using Barnett’s exclusive carbon fiber or Kevlar friction materials, tempered steel drive plates and a set of heavy-duty springs for stronger, more positive engagement. The segmented friction material’s design increases oil flow to the clutch, providing smoother, more consistent engagement, while increasing

clutch life. The heavy-duty springs are shot-peened and heat treated for durability, and like all Barnett clutch assemblies, the Dirt Digger kits are pre-measured for proper stack height prior to packaging and shipping.

Barnett also offers replacement clutch baskets and billet pressure plates for off-road motorcycles and ATVs. All Barnett clutch baskets are CNC precision machined from durable billet aluminum for maximum strength. They fea ture Barnett’s patented replaceable stainless-steel inserts to prevent grooving on the basket’s surface where the clutch plate tabs make contact.

Oil passage windows are machined into the basket to increase oil flow to the clutch plates for cooler operating temperatures and longer clutch life. Grade 8 fasteners are included, as is a backing plate when applicable to certain motorcycle models. Select applications come with the center kicker gear already installed, and baskets are avail able for most 80cc-and-larger motorcycle and ATV engines.

Barnett also has replacement clutch pressure plates for off-road. Each plate is CNC precision machined from billet aluminum, but Barnett takes it one step further by attaching a tempered steel surface that is guaranteed for long life. The steel surface also helps dissipate heat for lower clutch operating temperatures. Most of all, Barnett’s precise fit means optimum performance. ■

History and a Hypersport Tire Pirelli’s

High-Performance Anniversary

The DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa is a hypersport tire that takes the DIABLO ROSSO family to new performance heights. The tires offer support at full lean plus traction during acceleration, making it an excellent match for today’s highperformance sport bikes.

Pirelli is celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2022, and for most of that time, the company has been involved in motorcycle racing. In fact, Pirelli was a pioneer in the sport, with its first tires appearing in competition all the way back in 1897. It’s fitting, then, that the ultra-high-performance DIABLO ROSSO™ IV Corsa tire is a part of the anniversary festivities.

The DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa is a hypersport tire that takes the DIABLO ROSSO family to new performance heights. A fiercer version of the DIABLO ROSSO IV super sport tire, this latest addition is designed for customers who want to push their motorcycles to their fullest potential.

To help celebrate Pirelli’s anniversary year, the tire is also available in a limited-edition version with Pirelli’s 150th anniversary logo on the sidewall.

The new DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa features outstanding grip, handling and performance consistency. Thanks to a slicker tread design than its predecessors, the tire has a higher grip in dry conditions. The DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa tread is focused on the central grooves, so the shoulders have a slicker surface area for precision cornering. In all, this tire features a void/fill ratio that is a full 25 percent lower than the DIABLO ROSSO IV.

The innovative compounds, including dual compounds in both the front and rear tires, also increase grip while still allowing the tires to have the durability and consistency riders expect from Pirelli.

Both the front and rear tires feature a Full Silica com pound in the center, while the side areas have a softer compound for excellent grip and feedback. The rear tire’s shoulders are made of 100 percent Carbon Black, which derives directly from the compounds used on the Diablo Supercorsa SC racing tire. This compound offers support at full lean plus traction during acceleration, making it an excellent match for today’s high-performance sport bikes.

The multi-radius profile design is another place where Pirelli’s racing experience can be seen on the DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa tires. The central area has a sharper profile to make turn-in and direction changes faster and more precise. Meanwhile, the lateral areas of the tires have a less aggressive profile curvature, which helps increase contact area and traction when cornering.

While it’s great to enjoy riding in perfect weather, wet conditions are an inevitable part of the experience. Pirelli designed the DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa tires to have centralized grooves that provide both directional stability and water evacuation. The grooves also ensure even wear, which results in consistent performance. Between the central area of the tires and the slick area on the shoulders is an intermediate zone with tread grooves that help sweep water out of the way.

Pirelli offers the DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa in two front and seven rear sizes. ■

TIRES

Let’s talk in terms of round numbers for units sold. How does the figure 1 million strike you? One million happens to be the approximate number of Class 1, 2 and 3 E-bikes (electric pedal-assist bicycles for street and off-road use) that were sold in the United States during the past year. That’s a lot of E-bikes, and your dealership, along with many other Parts Unlimited dealers, have quick and immediate access to that growing market. A market that is sure to again eclipse 1 million units sold for the coming 2023 sales year, and for years to come.

As a Parts Unlimited dealer, your frontline source to the E-bike market is the LeMans Corporation’s Bicycle catalog, first pub lished in 2021. The new 2023 catalog, Volume 3, is scheduled to reach Parts Unlimited dealers soon, and it will easily sur pass the current catalog’s 146-page count that’s packed with products, including riding gear and apparel, performance parts for E-bikes, maintenance and service-life products such as tires, chains, and lubricants, and much more.

The new and larger 2023 Bicycle catalog also boasts the exclusive range of eMTBs from INTENSE Cycles, plus a new and unique electric e-Balance bike from Moose Racing designed and crafted specifically for the youth market (see sidebar). The 40-plus aftermarket brand names currently offered through Parts Unlimited’s Volume 2 Bicycle catalog will be joined by many new and exciting electric-bike

products from companies such as Kali Protectives, KMC, Öhlins, Spinergy, Thule and many more.

There are more developments for 2023 concerning E-bikes, too. Parts Unlimited’s parent company, LeMans Corporation, recently added two new E-bike key account reps/product specialties. John Korsog will serve the Southwest territory, and Matt Loof is responsible for the new East Coast region. Their involvement is sure to further and better assist dealer sales for 2023 within Parts Unlimited’s E-bike product and bicycle offering.

“Our new reps, John and Matt, have extensive background and knowledge in the E-bike market,” said Mike Ralph, LeMans Corporation’s E-bike Category Manager. “Equally impressive is their sales experience that dealers, even those not yet fully familiar with the E-bike market, will find help ful as LeMans continues to expand its electric power-assist bike brands and products distribution for coming years.”

“The E-bike market is growing,” emphasizes Ralph, “and the Powersports industry is moving steadily into the E-bike arena. Parts Unlimited certainly is part of that movement.” To fulfill that goal and to help keep dealers informed, Parts Unlimited will continue including E-bike demo rides for dealers at all LeMans dealer social rides and product shows. Dealers have already been introduced to the INTENSE Tazer MX E-bike range at the 2022 Indiana Crossroads Run

Parts Unlimited’s push to be a major player within the expanding E-bike market makes sense in other ways, too. That’s especially important now, considering that many of the major motorcycle manufacturers are embracing the electric vehicle market with their own current or future products. Harley-Davidson, for instance, has its Livewire electric-powered motorcycle, and Honda and Kawasaki have announced plans to introduce new models of their own.

Other OEM motorcycle manufacturers are on the way with future electric-powered models, and as mentioned, sales within the Class 1, 2 and 3 E-bikes reaches into the seven-figure sales numbers. The bottom line to all this activity suggests that future revenue generated by E-bike sales will continue to grow.

To further prepare for future growth, and to “Support the Sport”, LeMans Corporation became a member of PeopleForBikes, an advocacy group that promotes the world of bicycling and E-bikes (www.peopleforbikes.org). As the bicycle and pedal-assist bike markets continue to assimilate into a single and diverse industry, sales will only grow in products and opportunities available to consumers and product users.

MOOSE RACING AGROID

MORE THAN KID STUFF

There’s a new kid on the E-bike block. New for 2023 is Moose Racing’s Agroid RS-16 E-Balance Bike for children. And it’s sure to be a hit for young, inexperienced riders looking to break into the E-bike ranks.

Parts Unlimited dealers are already familiar with Moose Racing’s line of quality riding gear and apparel, and off-road products that enhance the performance and ride of con ventionally-powered motocross and off-road motorcycles. Now, Moose Racing offers the Agroid that further expands its reach into the growing E-bike market.

Parts Unlimited dealers will experience their first look at the NVP Product Expo in Louisville. Moose Racing’s ground-breaking model is sure to pave new paths for future E-bike enthusiasts.

37 JANUARY 2023 ★ PARTS MAGAZINE MARKET
REPORT

“There’s a definite trend of electric vehicles,” adds Ralph, and no doubt, Parts Unlimited intends to be a major player, especially within those three E-bike classes that are creating their own category for the powersports community.

Indeed, cross pollination already exists concerning the motocross and off-road motorcycle racing world where many leading racers use their personal pedal-assist eMTBs to cross-train and prepare for motocross and off-road competition. As a result, eMTBs such as the Intense TAZER MX offered by Parts Unlimited give racers real-world riding and training experience within a single package.

This crossover between traditional motocross and off-road riders and the booming E-bike market has led to a mix of conventional off-road motorcycles and eMTBs competing at the same venue within the professionally-ranked GNCC national events. Look for that trend to continue elsewhere in off-road competition, with eMTB racers competing on the same courses or off-road venues as those for moto cross or off-road motorcycles.

Even among consumers, many off-road riders (and street riders) supplement their gas-powered two-wheel action with time aboard E-bikes and eMTBs. With the expansion of the Bicycle catalog and addition of new and exciting high-quality vendors, Parts Unlimited continues to “Sup port the Sport,” and serve as the one-stop shop for all dealers and their E-bike needs for support and service.

With such growth steering the E-bike industry, 2023 appears to be a bellwether year for E-bikes and Parts Unlimited dealers. As brand names continue to join Parts Unlimited’s vast lineup of vendors, new and exciting products will become available to consumers.

And with that we’ll leave you with this fact: According to PeopleForBikes, America’s E-bike market currently generates about $49.7 billion – that’s billion. And by 2027 that figure is expected to surpass $80 billion. ■

Performance that Wins Success in GNCC eMTB Racing TIRES

“The partnership formed between the Impakt EMTB Race Team and Michelin has been one of the most notable partnerships in the team’s 3-year history,” says Impakt EMTB Racing Team owner Luke Nessler. “The support that Michelin provides the team has allowed us to be on nearly every podium in each class over the past two years.”

Using Michelin tires, the Impakt EMTB team has done a lot more than just get on the podium. Riders Cooper Kuneff and Gavin Gartlist nabbed National Championships in their respective classes in both 2021 and 2022.

The Michelin name is well known in the powers ports industry, but did you know that Michelin’s first tire product was a bicycle tire, patented way back in 1891? Bicycles were part of Michelin’s foundation, and have remained a staple of the business all the way up to the current era of E-bikes. In fact, Michelin is at the cutting edge of E-bike tire technology, and is a fea ture sponsor of the GNCC eMTB race series and supporter of the championship-winning Impakt EMTB Racing Team.

“The Michelin partnership with the Impakt EMTB Race Team is a great extension of our presence at the GNCC racing series,” says Randy Richardson, Two Wheel Part nership Manager for Michelin North America, Inc. “As a sponsor of the series, Michelin provides onsite technical support at each round and offers contingency for all GNCC motorcycle and eMTB classes. This investment enables Michelin to engage with winning racers like those on the Impakt EMTB Race Team and Magna1 Motorsports Off-Road Racing Team as well as racers striving to improve their results and achieve their own personal goals.”

“The Michelin bicycle tires are second to none,” explains Nessler. “Between the E-Wild tires and Force AM2 tires, there’s a tire for every condition and terrain we encounter. From the snow, mud or dusty and dry dirt, we have noticed a significant difference in overall traction as well as hold-up in the corners compared to other brands. The E-Wild has stood the test of time for two seasons and is the most well-versed tire for eMTB riding and racing.”

Michelin’s winning E-Wild tires were specifically designed for the demands of modern E-bikes being ridden in loose, tricky terrain. A special carcass, new generation of high-end rubber, and chucky tread pattern provide excellent traction and help reduce energy consumption. Pinch Protection technology and a Gravity Shield casing provide outstanding protection.

Michelin’s Force AM2 tires are another option for E-bikes, with a tread and carcass designed for hard and mixed terrain. The tread pattern combined with Gum-X Technology helps provide grip on hard terrain and reduce rolling resistance, while the light and robust Gravity Shield casing adds protection for heavier E-bikes. ■

HELMETS

Head Protection Advanced Helmet Technology

The truth is, riders today are more aware than ever of the potential consequences of a concussion. More and more customers coming through the door know the risks of head trauma, and they want reassurance that the helmet they choose is going to give them a great barrier between their brain and the ground.

ODS is a barrier that moves differently than traditional helmets, and it, as well as all 6D helmets, was designed to reduce the likelihood of a concussion or brain injury by diminishing the transfer of kinetic energy. In the simplest terms, ODS is suspension for the head.

6D has developed a revolutionary new energy management system for helmets called Omni-Directional Suspension, or ODS. This “suspension for the head” was designed to reduce the likelihood of a con cussion or brain injury by diminishing the transfer of kinetic energy.

Chances are, you’ve hit your head at least once while riding something with two wheels. Maybe it was while learning to ride a bicycle, a motor cycle crash or something similar, but most of our heads have had a close encounter with the ground at one point or another.

Concussions are something we hear a lot about these days. Scientists are finally beginning to understand the potential long-term effects of such injuries, especially when multiple concussions occur over time. Not only is this subject important to motorcycle and bicycle enthusiasts, but to professional and recreational athletes, as well. Things like an increased likelihood of Alzheimer’s disease and cognitive impairment are among the life-altering effects of concussions.

While all of that sounds scary, it’s also the reason 6D has de veloped a revolutionary new energy management system for helmets called Omni-Directional Suspension, or ODS.

The patented technology and materials that make ODS possible combine to mitigate impact forces as much as possible without compromising the helmet’s structural integrity. Traditionally, each layer of a hel met has been secured to the other – the shell and EPS liner essentially operate as a single piece. With ODS, however, the inner liner is suspended independently of the outside layer. In the event of an impact (in other words, that moment the helmet meets the ground), the suspended inner layer is able to compress and shear in a three-dimensional space, thereby reducing the transfer of impact forces.

The “suspension for the head” analogy is really a perfect way to describe how ODS works. Think of it like a wheel hitting a bump. A bike with a rigid frame would absorb all of the energy transferred from the wheel, making for a very bumpy ride. A rear shock, however, will redirect and absorb much of that energy, so the ride will be smoother. Similarly, ODS cushions impact force, so less kinetic energy is delivered directly to the rider’s head.

ODS technology was tested by a third-party independent laboratory, whose results showed significantly reduced head injury criteria values throughout various tests, 6D reports. The test results not only showed how ODS advances helmet technology, but the helmets significantly outperformed traditional helmet design, the company added.

The 6D ATB-2T MTB helmet is a great example of the company’s range of ODS-equipped helmets. Ideal for MTB and eMTB riders, the 2T is lightweight, compact, and well ventilated. ■

E-Balance Bike Helps Learn Throttle Control Twist of the Wrist

Whether it’s got an engine or not, Moose Racing is all about giving riders a competitive edge for their bikes. Moose Racing is taking on the mountain bike segment with a wide range of new products. For parts, customers have the option of new grips, handlebars and pedals. There is also a collection of tools designed specifically for keeping mountain bikes performing at their best.

Many riders enjoy both bicycles and motorcycles, and that love for both types of riding often begins at a young age. Moose Racing is helping kids learn the nuances of adding power to their riding with the new Agroid RS-16 E-Balance Bike.

This electric balance bike is the ideal entry-level riding platform for kids 8 years and older who want to move from bicycles to motorcycles. Not only does it help them learn balance and control, but it also helps them get used to riding a bike that has a twist throttle.

The Agroid RS-16 E-Balance Bike makes it easy for kids to transition from a regular bicycle to a powered one by offering three different speed settings. Level one maxes out at just 5 mph, level two bumps things up to 7 mph, and level three opens up the high-output electric motor to its top speed of 11 mph.

In addition to the speed levels, the RS-16 also has a simple push button to start and stop the motor. In all, the bike helps smooth that transition between a traditional pedal bike and a minibike. It’s the perfect middle step in the process.

The bike is equipped with 16-inch wheels and pneumatic tires, and both the seat and handlebars can be adjusted to give the rider a comfortable stance. Moose Racing’s new Agroid RS-16 E-Balance Bike is the ideal entry-level riding platform for kids 8 years and older who want to move from bicycles to motorcycles. It helps them learn balance and control, and helps get them used to riding a bike that has a twist throttle.

PEDAL POWER

NEW PRODUCTS FOR MOUNTAIN BIKES

With many of Moose Racing’s customers adding moun tain bikes to their two-wheel lifestyle, the team at Moose has added grips, handlebars and pedals to its growing product lineup.

The Moose Racing clamp-on mountain bike grips come in two styles, though both feature dual clamping mounts that provide a solid grip, even in wet conditions. One of the grip designs features a diamond-style surface with a ribbed area for added grip. A dual black and gray color scheme tops it off. The half-waffle grips include diamondtextured inlays and come in solid black.

The grips coordinate perfectly with the Moose Racing mountain bike aluminum handlebars. Made from 7000-series aluminum for that great combination of light

weight and durability, these 35mm bars come in two rise options – 20mm and 30mm. Both of those have a seven-degree sweep and a total length of 800mm. A hard anodized black finish adds an extra layer of protection and looks sleek when paired with the black and gray colors of the grips.

The Moose Racing mountain bike pedals are also black anodized, and they are made from CNC-machined billet aluminum to provide the strength that pedals need to stand up to both the rider and the terrain. A screw-in, pin-type cleat design adds traction on both the upper and lower platform, which measures in at 102mm x 98mm x 16mm.

In addition to the parts, Moose Racing also has five new mountain bike tools that every rider should have handy for repairs and maintenance both in the garage and on the go. The chain breaker tool is designed to work with most bicycle chains from single-speed to 11-speed. The tool makes it easy to lengthen or shorten the chain to fit multiple cassette configurations. Thanks to the design of the guide pin, the chain will have a clean break every time.

The Moose Racing chain checker tool makes it easy to measure chain wear. The precision laser-cut design accurately measures 0.05 percent to 0.75 percent of chain wear. An integrated chain hook and chain ring nut wrench come in handy during chain removal and installation.

Moose Racing designed the multi tool to be that one thing a rider always wants to carry along. The 13 folding tools include seven sizes of Allen head wrenches, two Torx wrenches, Phillips bits and a Schrader valve adapter. The multi tool only weighs 118 grams, and everything has been coated with an anti-corrosion finish to ensure long life.

The spoke wrench is a universal tool that can accommodate spoke gauges from nine to 15. And, finally, Moose Racing’s cable cutting tool efficiently cuts both cable housings and the inner cable. It can also clamp cables and end caps to finish off a job. ■

PARTS DEALER RIDE

When Parts Unlimited dealers commit to the company’s annual popular dealer ride, they know that they’re in for a great time enjoying the one activity that likely got them into the business to begin with – riding!

Those attending the Indiana Crossroads Run in early Octo ber got a heaping helping of powersport recreation, and then some. For the 2022 ride, dealers, vendors and Parts Unlimited staff gathered in Lafayette, Indiana for two days of street riding, off-roading on two wheels and four, and even some E-bike pedal time.

As a veteran of Parts Unlimited dealer rides – going back to some snowmobile excursions and the Colorado rides

– Wayne Bedeaux of Leo’s South in Lakeville, Minnesota said he always looks forward to the chance to get away from the dealership and do some riding. For the Cross roads Run, Bedeaux rode out with his Parts rep, Dave Wappler, and a few other dealers and rented a side-byside to enjoy the Badlands.

Bedeaux said it was a fantastic chance to enjoy some offroad riding, especially in a part of the country that was easily accessible for a lot of dealers. It was also a great opportunity to meet other dealers and the supporting ven dors. “I just want to give a big thank you to Parts Unlimited and to all the vendors who sponsor the ride,” he said. “It’s really amazing what they do.”

A Versatile ATV/UTV Tire Performance for All TIRES

where – or in the middle of a race – and the Chicane DS puts riders at ease with its eight-ply rated carcass, which is extremely puncture resistant.

Plus, the Chicane DS is designed with a deep rim guard to protect the wheel and to help prevent pinch flats. The premium compound helps extend tread life, too, for mile after mile of predictable performance.

The result of all these features is a true all-terrain tread, which is part of what makes the Chicane DS such a great all-around tire. Whether a rider is on the trail, on the hunt for a trophy or out in the wild where no trails exist, the Chicane DS has the right features to get through what ever the ride has in store.

The Chicane DS is available in four different sizes to make it even more of a versatile tire.

If you had to sum up the new High Lifter Chicane DS tire in one word, it would probably be versatility. This UTV and ATV tire has a non-directional tread design that is made to perform on everything from hard pack to loose terrain, and it provides the right blend of steering and traction performance to make it appealing for both sport and utility applications. To make it even sweeter, the Chicane DS tire offers premium features at a new, lower price point.

The versatility of the Chicane DS begins with its in novative tread design. Blocks along the center tread are tightly spaced, which helps the tire get great traction on hard pack. At the same time, wide shoulder lugs dig into loose terrain to pull the vehicle through without a hitch. The team at High Lifter also incorporated a mud breaker design into the shoulder tread, which helps prevent mud from sticking to the tire. With the Chicane DS, getting traction in any kind of terrain is no problem.

Not only will the Chicane DS tire get riders down the trail efficiently, but it is also designed to make sure it can face any hazards that might come along. High Lifter knows riders don’t want to get a flat while out in the middle of no

DRIVE BELTS

Seeing Red A High-Performance Drive Belt

Modern off-road vehicles are more powerful and capable than ever before. As part of that improved performance, these machines can also run at higher temperatures for a longer time, produce more torque and generally stand up to much tougher environments – whether through hard work or competition – than their predecessors.

What all of that means is that these latest-generation ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles need CVT belts that can keep up and keep going. That’s where Gates G-Force drive belts come in. Its family of CVT belts includes the premium G-Force RedLine™ CVT belt, which is en gineered and built to have the longevity, performance and reliability necessary to keep pace with powerful, high-torque off-road vehicles of 800cc or bigger.

Gates, the company that produces the G-Force line of drive belts, designed the G-Force RedLine belt using its proprietary software. After that, it was time for ex tensive testing, both in the lab and in racing. Athletes tested the G-Force RedLine belt in the toughest, most extreme riding conditions, ensuring that it can handle the challenge.

The G-Force RedLine belt is built to withstand extreme friction, severe compressive force and the excessive heat created from high acceleration, frequent back-shifting and heavy loads. The belt’s durability and longevity are

achieved in part thanks to the material the belt is made with. The patented, fiber-reinforced Ethylene Elastomer compound provides outstanding heat resistance, increased durability, a higher effective operating tem perature and a greater load-carrying capacity.

In other words, the G-Force RedLine belt checks all the boxes for what a CVT belt needs to keep modern offroad vehicles running at their best, even under the most extreme conditions. And, when it comes to durability, the team at Gates reports that in testing, the G-Force RedLine belt lasted up to three times longer than an OEM belt, thanks to its resistance to cracks and heat.

There is no need to simply rely on test results, though. Race results are a testament to the G-Force RedLine belt’s prowess, too, as racers in all major North American series continue to prove just how good the belt is.

All Gates G-Force drive belts are made in the USA in Siloam Springs, Arkansas. In addition to the G-Force RedLine belt, riders have a range of drive belt options, including the original G-Force, which combines durabil ity and value. The G-Force C-12 features a carbon tensile cord and is great for tough off-road trails. ■

WHEELS Forging Ahead Carbon Fiber Technology for UTV Wheels

The team at Vision Wheel is behind Moose Racing’s 325X Carbon Forged UTV wheel. This 100 percent carbon fiber wheel weighs in at just 8 pounds, 8 ounces, and is designed for rugged, aggressive riding.

by forged aluminum. Then carbon fiber wheels hit the market, using a manufacturing process called Resin Transfer Molded (RTM). Carbon Fiber Forged® is the next step in UTV wheel evolution, representing a wheel that is outstandingly light, strong, and responsive.

The team at Vision Wheel started looking for a carbon fiber alternative to metal wheels eight years ago. At the time, RTM was the best technology available to make those wheels a reality. However, the company found that its RTM carbon fiber wheels tended to be costly because they were difficult to mass produce.

Now, Vision Wheel is able to conquer those former setbacks with the new Carbon Fiber Forged technology. This proprietary technology uses chopped carbon fiber plus a matrix design, called Carbon Fiber Forged. The best example of this latest wheel technology is the Moose Racing 325X Carbon Forged UTV wheel. This 100 percent carbon fiber wheel weighs in at just 8 pounds, 8 ounces. For comparison, an average 15x7 aluminum wheel tips the scales at just over 16 pounds. When you add up all four wheels, the result is a UTV that is about 30 pounds lighter.

Racers know that every ounce saved is important, so a 30-pound drop is huge. The lighter wheels equal less rolling resistance, too, so there’s more available torque for getting off the line and out of corners quicker.

Vision Wheel hasn’t stayed in business for more than 46 years by looking back at its past accomplishments. Rather, the company is always looking for the next big thing in technology, materials and manufacturing to give offroad vehicles the greatest possible advantage.

Currently, Vision Wheel is celebrating the launch of its Carbon Fiber Forged wheel technology. As the team at Vision Wheel likes to say, it has reinvented the wheel – quite literally – with these lightweight, high-tech UTV wheels.

UTV wheels have been through a lot of changes over the years. Steel wheels gave way to cast aluminum, followed

The 325X Carbon Forged UTV wheel is made for rugged, aggressive riding. It features tire-lock technology, which is an incredibly sturdy bead seat design that makes it difficult for a tire to de-bead. The reduced chance of a de-beaded tire going flat means more time on the track. Because of the integral tire-lock design, there is no need for a separate bead lock ring and all the associated hard ware. This wheel can remove the need for a full bead lock UTV wheel.

Lighter weight and a performance advantage are both great features, but carbon fiber wheels look good, too. The 325X is clear coated so the natural carbon fiber shows through while still getting a layer of UV protection.

The Moose Racing 325X Carbon Forged UTV wheel is load rated to 1,000 pounds, and it is available in a 15x6 size with 4-136 and 4-156 bolt patterns. ■

Power Boost Performance Products for Side-By-Sides

The S&S adjustable weight clutch kit for KRX models provides adjustability, more efficient power transfer and a longer life for the belt and clutch. The heat-treated steel clutch kit includes magnetic weights that allow for easy clutching adjustments. Not only can a rider select the right setup for the terrain, but personal preferences can be fine-tuned, too. For those new to weighted clutches, the kit comes with weight loading suggestions for various engine, tire and wheel combinations.

More power, more performance, more fitments. The team at the S&S Off-Road Division has been busy, and a host of new products will help competitive side-by-side drivers get down the trail or to the finish line faster than ever before.

The high-performance Power Tune XTO is already a popular SXS exhaust from S&S, and it is now available for Can-Am Maverick X3 models. It features a high-flow stainless steel muffler body with dual exits, which both have a removable spark arrestor and tunable inserts. The 2.25-inch inserts are ideal for riding flat out on the trails, while riders who prefer rock crawling will want the 1.375inch inserts for the torque boost.

The S&S Off-Road Division team loves the Kawasaki Teryx KRX 1000, which is exactly why they decided to make it even better. S&S has a trio of new products for 2020-2023 Kawasaki KRX models, including an adjustable weight clutch kit, a turbo kit and a high-flow fuel rail.

The KRX turbocharger kit for KRX models proves that hard work pays off. After 18 months of development, this turbo kit gives the stock KRX engine an incredible 50 percent gain in horsepower. The kit isn’t just a simple bolt-on turbo, either. The S&S Off-Road Division re-engineered the intake and exhaust systems, as well as the fuel delivery system. The kit even comes with pistons for the correct compression, 900cc/minute injectors and a high-flow fuel rail.

This turbo kit is designed for the most competitive of riders, and it’s easy to see why. In addition to the HP gains, the 0-60 time drops from the stock setup’s 11.5 seconds to just 6.2 seconds.

S&S includes a high-flow fuel rail with each KRX turbo charger kit, but it is also available separately. The stock fuel rail had to be upgraded in order to keep up with the turbo, and this billet aluminum rail gets a lot more fuel flowing than the stock plastic piece.

The fuel rail works with both the stock KRX setup and on systems with mild modifications. The rail provides even distribution of fuel to both cylinders, and a pulsation damp ener reduces fuel pressure fluctuations. A new fuel pickup that exceeds the stock version is part of the package, too. ■

TIRES Bigger is Better Expanded

Size for UTV Performance

Tires

The classic motto “bigger is better” certainly does not apply to everything, but in the ever-challenged limits of the performance UTV world, things continue to move in that direction. From high-speed trails and dunes to vertical climbs and descents over rocks and roots, UTVs are consistently pushing the limits of OEM tires.

Thankfully, companies like AMS Tires understand firsthand the handling needs of the modern powersports industry. With more than a decade of experience producing a diverse range of off-road tires, AMS is known for bringing customers the traction, handling and durability they need at a cost that doesn’t break the bank. This extensive experience for the ATV and UTV sectors is evident in one of AMS’ well-established tire lines, the M2 Evil Radial.

Introduced in the first half of 2021 and proven through countless running hours since, the M2 Evil line is an evolution of its predecessor, the M1, enhancing light weight characteristics, improving handling and delivering exceptional ride performance. The adrenaline-fueled fun of powersports customers typically has no mercy for tires, yet they rely on them every trip to connect power to the ground. This is why the M2 Evil was developed with a truck-like tread in a non-directional radial tire, offering a long-lasting, smooth ride with AMS’ proprietary, natural rubber compound.

M2 Evil tires’ optimized tread life is complemented by carefully designed and implemented sidewall tread, giving these tires the strength, protection and traction needed in sand, dirt, rocks and everything in between. Plus, your customers will be able to see the maximized value with a stout, 20mm of tread depth, ready to take on any off-road season.

While the offered sizes of 25 inches and 26 inches in six-ply construction, and 27 inches to 32 inches in eight-ply construction, can serve a number of different machines, AMS has kept its finger on the pulse of UTV customers’ needs and have now added a beefy, 34-inch size. With an exact size rating of 34 x 10R15, these M2 Evil tires are equipped to take on the off-road challenges your customers throw at them with stock or modified machines. Ready to mount-up to the popular OEM and aftermarket 15-inch wheel size, 34-inch M2 Evil tires not only deliver impressive performance, but provide a mean look as well. ■

» The M2 Evil line is just one of many high-value tire offerings from AMS. To learn more about this line and other models you can offer your powersports customers, talk with your Parts rep for details, and get more information in the Tire catalog and at www.parts-unlimited.com.

Unfortunately, a problem some U.S. riders face is sourcing replacement components. Many parts make that list, but two very criti cal categories are starter motors and stators.

Born from hands-on experience repairing and building motorcycles, Rick’s Motorsport Electrics’ line of replace ment electrical and starting system components aim to solve that problem. Rick’s recognized that one of the only parts choices in these categories for many European motorcycles is buying original equipment out of Europe, which can be costly and time consuming.

Rick’s alternatives to OEM components ease the strain on both budget and availability for dealers and end users alike. For example, one of Rick’s most popular items is a starter motor for Triumph models. In fact, Rick’s offers eight different starters for Triumph, four for Ducati, three for BMW, and even one for MV Agusta. Rick’s understands the use and abuse that starters are susceptible to, and have ensured that strength and longevity are prioritized in everything from the gears to the windings. Plus, Rick’s starters remain true to their philosophy with a direct, bolt-on fit for fewer headaches in the shop or the garage. The charging responsibilities of stators are equally as critical to motorcycle function. Rick’s offers stators for a wide range of motorcycles for which parts are typically difficult to source, and some where OE is the only option. For example, one of the latest additions to Rick’s stator lineup is for KTM 50 mini off-road models. Alleviating potential charging system issues, Rick’s stators are built with the same com mitment to OE-level quality as the rest of its catalog.

Innovation in the Rick’s Motorsport Electrics facility doesn’t end at OE replacement parts availability. The new Hot Shot KTM Charging Kits convert the charging system from AC to DC, allowing it to power headlights and other lights around the bike for reliable performance during night rides or races. These kits include a new, eight-pole stator and new rectifier/regulator designed to work with lithium batteries, commonly found in modern KTM machines.

Rick’s commitment to keeping riders on the road, track or trail, regardless of their machine, is a direct result of the company’s passion for motorcycling. This commitment is also why each component is covered under a one-year replacement warranty, providing reassurance to dealers and customers. ■

One of the newest improvements for the UCT2100(50) Chain Tool is the redesigned Flare Pin FP500JP. The new flare pin features grooves that prevent the user from over-flaring the rivet pins. The new sealed posts allow the components to lock into the tool body and larger pressure bolt for easier use without dropped components. However, just in case a mechanic does lose a tool piece into the endless void under a toolbox, replacement components are readily available.

The redesigned plate holder PH500JP (included in Chain Tool kit) for 50 series chains features a reversible post that allows the user to switch between the clip type or rivet type plate holder. The UCT2100(50) Chain Tool comes in a molded plastic storage case and makes a great gift for any motorcyclist, and is a great addition for a dealership service department.

Improperly riveted chains can cause a dangerous situation. Ensure that the flare on the rivet meets RK’s minimum required flare for a particular chain model. Visit our website or scan the QR code to review the minimum and maximum rivet diameter dimensions for each RK Chain model. After riveting, mechanics should measure the rivet flare to ensure the proper flare dimension has been achieved.

BATTERY CHARGERS

Service Chargers Designed for Diagnostics

Batteries in powersport vehicles are working harder, powering more electronics and are now an integral part of diagnostic service at the shop. A battery in poor shape may be unable to remain at a stable voltage for long enough to complete an upload of a software update or to troubleshoot an electrical fault. Once that battery drops too low, it will interrupt operation of the diagnostic tool hooked up to the vehicle’s ECU. The worst-case scenario – the ECU’s memory is corrupted, and your service technician’s precious time has been wasted.

This is easily prevented with the OptiMate PRO-1 DUO, the 4-in-1 service tool that is a great addition to a service depart ment. The power supply (PS) mode provides a stable 13.6V so that troubleshooting or uploading can be completed, never mind how long it may take.

Troubleshooting or reprogramming can be done at the vehicle – the OptiMate PRO-1 DUO comes with a handlebar or steering wheel hanging hook, and rubber bumpers that prevent it from sliding around if placed on the vehicle. When the service has been completed, the wall storage receiver keeps the charger in position and ready to do more.

The OptiMate PRO-1 DUO also charges any powersport battery (Pb: lead-acid or LFP: Lithium), in any condition, new and used.

New lead-acid batteries should receive an activation charge once filled with acid, and that first charge is vitally

important to battery longevity and performance. Even fully charged, factory-activated AGM (absorbed glass mat) bat teries benefit from a re-activation charge since they may have lost charge during months of long storage.

The PRO-1 DUO charge process is easy – Select “Pb” for any lead-acid battery type, hook up the battery and the PRO-1 DUO does the rest. The Ampmatic processor automatically adjusts the charge rate according to battery size, and that new battery will be ready for service within one to two hours.

The LFP charge mode is for lithium (LFP) batteries that are typically delivered at 30 percent or less charge due to trans portation restrictions or for new motorcycle OEM batteries delivered in sleep/transport mode that need their battery management system (BMS) reset before the battery can de liver power. Select the LFP charge mode, hook up the battery and – if a reset is required – press the button. Within an hour, that battery will be ready for fitment.

OptiMate PRO-1 DUO also recovers any neglected battery from as low as 0.5 Volts, and while doing so, it tests the bat tery for damage and state of health (SOH). Time is money as they say, and the powerful OptiMate PRO-1 DUO 4-in-1 battery service tool is a time saver.

For your customers who prefer to customize their vehicle’s ride modes or adjust electronic suspension or commu nication settings, there are two options for vehicles with lead-acid batteries: the OptiMate 6 Select, rated at 12V,

6 Amps and the OptiMate 7 Select, rated at 12V, 10 Amps. Both offer selectable charge modes for standard (14.4V) and premium AGM (14.7V) batteries that automatically save, charge, test and maintain. There is also a power supply mode for tuning or troubleshooting.

For lithium batteries that need different care when that ve hicle is parked, the two options include the OptiMate Lithium

No matter what kind of batteries your customers run in their machines, there is an OptiMate battery charger built to not only maintain those batteries, but also provide power for tuning and other maintenance.

Just in Case Compact Tool Kits for Repairs-on-the-Road

Alot of the products avail able in the powersports industry come from resourceful people who wanted something that simply wasn’t available. That was the case with Dan Parks, who wanted a good accessory tool kit for his Harley-Davidson. When he couldn’t find one, he made his own and began to sell it under the brand name CruzTOOLS. That was back in 1995, and since then, CruzTOOLS has expanded to offer accessory tool kits not just for Harleys, but for a wide range of powersports vehicles. Since the start, CruzTOOLS has aimed to provide professional-grade tools at consumer-friendly prices.

Another big focus of the company is convenience. CruzTOOLS believes tool kits should be lightweight and compact, making them easy to take along on the road or trail. To achieve that, each kit is specific to a make or model and packed with the tools most likely to be needed for roadside repairs.

CruzTOOLS products have been available through Drag Specialties since the late 1990s, and Parts Unlimited started carrying the accessory tool kits shortly after that. Parks oversaw CruzTOOLS until 2018, when he retired and sold the business to one of his customers, CycoActive Inc.

There were a few changes once CycoActive took over. For one thing, the business was moved from California – CruzTOOLS is actually named for its original home in Santa Cruz – to Seattle. Additionally, every visual aspect of CruzTOOLS, from the logo to its online presence and even retail packaging, was redesigned with a vibrant, modern new look to catch the eye of customers.

The tool components are sourced from factories around the world, and each accessory tool kit is hand-assembled in Seattle by employees who know the value of quality and reliability. The kits feature internal tool pouches to keep everything organized, and each kit is covered by a lifetime guarantee.

CruzTOOLS now offers a premium tool kit for Indian Motorcycles. The RoadTech Tool Kit for Indians has the right tools in the right sizes to get Chief, Chieftain, Roadmaster and Scout models back on the road.

Recently, CruzTOOLS launched a premium tool kit for Indian Motorcycles that became an instant hit. The RoadTech Tool Kit for Indians has the right tools in the right sizes to get Chief, Chieftain, Roadmaster and Scout models back on the road.

The kit includes a pair of 27mm axle wrenches for re moving rear wheels as well as a 14mm x 16mm hex axle adapter for removing front axles. There’s a shock adjust ment tool to set preload, plus a host of wrenches, sockets, hex keys and Torx keys.

In addition to those more traditional tools, there is also a supply of duct tape and cable ties, plus mechanic’s wire. A tire pressure gauge is included, too, making the kit even more convenient. Everything has its own pouch in the kit, which rolls up for easy storage. ■

RIDING APPAREL

Introducing the Tech-Air 3 High-Tech, Lightweight Airbag Protection

Alpinestars’ newest addition to its range of wearable Airbag Systems, the Tech-Air® 3, is de signed to be worn over or under a motorcycle jacket, and serves as an effective and practical choice for touring riders, urban city commuters and light off-road Adventure riders.

The Tech-Air 3 features Alpinestars’ crash detection trig gering algorithm, which was developed and refined with millions of miles of riding data and thousands of crashes. This allows the system to accurately assess when to de ploy the airbag ahead of an impact or other dangerous situation like a low-side or high-side crash.

In the event that Tech-Air 3 detects the start of a crash, the system will inflate the protective airbag in 50 millisec onds. In the event of a direct impact of the motorcycle with another vehicle or obstacle, the Tech-Air 3 System is effective for the first impact*. This means that the system inflates before hitting the vehicle or obstacle against which the motorcycle will have the direct impact.

The Tech-Air 3 features a water-resistant main chassis and a waterproof ECU and electronics. The slim, self-contained system can be worn under a motorcycle jacket, including an Alpinestars’ Tech-Air Ready jacket, or any leather or tex tile jacket, providing that the jacket has sufficient space to accommodate the inflation of the airbag. The Tech-Air 3 allows customers to enjoy the daily commute or weekend ride even more, knowing they’re protected.

Alpinestars has packed a lot of technology into the TechAir 3, which is a fully autonomous active airbag system and does not require any external connections or sensors

on the motorcycle for the System to operate. It incorpo rates six integrated sensors to provide highly sensitive crash monitoring performance in a variety of dynamic riding situations, even when stopped. The Tech-Air 3 features quick and easy charging with a 40-hour battery life (when fully charged).

The Tech-Air 3 features a diagonal zipper to provide com plete front chest coverage while also concealing the inner airbag. An LED display on the front chest indicates the airbag’s operational status. The LED display also incorpo rates a haptic alert, which vibrates to confirm the system is armed, and alerts the rider when the battery is running low. (It will also vibrate when the system disarms)

Riders can also monitor the Tech-Air 3’s operational status via smartphone thanks to its Bluetooth low-energy con nectivity. The Tech-Air app shows the system’s operational status, battery status and provides detailed maps of their rides via MyRide. (Ride recording is a manually activated function; it does not do it automatically)

Customers can easily stow the Tech-Air 3 Airbag System in a backpack, under a bike’s seat or in bike luggage when not in use thanks to its packable design. Also available in a Stella women’s version, complete with an ergonomically engineered women’s optimized fit. ■

» Talk with your Parts rep for details, and learn more in the Helmet & Apparel catalog and at www.parts-unlimited.com.

*The first impact test was performed in accordance with Dolomiticert Protocol where the airbag was tested within a speed range of 25 to 63 km/h. For more information on the envelope of protection, see the Tech-Air 3 User Manual.

Getting Stronger

Performance UTV Parts for Durability, Clearance

Moose Racing has a host of new products available for performance UTVs, with a big focus on the Can-Am Maverick X3.

The Maverick X3 gets a boost in several different areas, ranging from storage to shocks. Moose Racing designed the simple but incredibly useful Maver ick X3 Tie Down Brackets to make straps easy to attach and hard to shake loose. The brackets, which come in a set of four, are TIG-welded by hand out of thin but strong 0.135-inch steel. They install over the factory shipping lugs on the frame of the X3, creating an instant tie-down spot. The brackets have a semi-gloss black powder coat, and they can handle more than 5,700 lbs. of pull pressure.

Moose Racing has just introduced two options to boost 2017-2022 Maverick X3s that don’t have the smart shock setup. The Maverick X3 Billet Shock Tower Brace is CNCmachined from 6061 aluminum and features a black anodized finish.

Riders who want even more shock support can opt for the Maverick X3 Billet Shock Tower Brace with Double Shear Gusset Plate. This package includes the tower brace plus a separate gusset plate that ties the brace into the front bulkhead. The X3 arrives with a single-shear shock mount, which means most of the shock pressure is put on one side of the mounting bolt. By adding the gusset plate, the setup becomes a double shear shock mount, so the pressure is more evenly distributed. The result is a much stronger, more reliable setup, which is a must for anyone pushing the limits of this performance UTV.

Both the X3 and Polaris RZR models can take advantage of Moose Racing’s High-Clearance Lower Control Arms. These durable arms result in an additional 2 inches of ground clearance, making them ideal for riders who like to tackle the toughest terrain. The arms are made from DOM tubing for top-notch strength and dura bility, and the design features braces to make the whole setup even tougher. Everything is finished off with a powder coat to keep the control arms protected.

Like the high-clearance control arms, the Moose Racing High-Clearance Radius Rods allow X3 and RZR models to successfully

navigate harsh environments. These rods are made from DOM tubing, also. The standard radius rods are 1¼ inches in diameter, but there are also heavy-duty versions made from 1 ½ inch seamless DOM tubing, so there is no need to worry about the arms bending or breaking. The radius rods are fully adjustable to allow camber and toe setup, and the heat-treated Heim joints are rated to 17,900 lbs. ■

LUGGAGE MOUNTS

It’s a Snap A Strapless Luggage Solution

Rick Riffel started riding motorcycles in 1966, but he didn’t get into the motorcycle business until he had a need for a product that no one had made yet. After a stroke, Rick was able to return to riding, but he had a difficult time manipulating the various straps and bungees required to secure luggage onto a luggage rack. He asked his son Shane to buy him “one of those quick snap-on-type tour bags.”

You know where this story is go ing – Shane wasn’t able to find any such product, so he and his dad made one. Shane and Rick became inventors and designers out of necessity, and they quickly realized Rick wasn’t the only rider who would appreciate such a con venient luggage system. RickRak was born.

The design and testing phase was extensive, involving redesigns, many prototypes and more than 25,000 test miles. But, by the end of it, Rick and Shane had a convenient quick-attach luggage solution.

RickRak is the company name as well as the name of its star product. The RickRak luggage rack includes a locking system that provides an extra layer of security while riding, and it acts as a theft deterrent.

The RickRak is able to securely store luggage without the need for any straps or bungees, which means there’s no reason to worry about straps coming loose or paint scratches from flying cords. Contact areas are protected to ensure the RickRak won’t harm any of the bike’s surfaces.

Each RickRak, like the one designed for 2019 and earlier Indian models, are powder coated black for an added layer of durability. The hardware needed to attach luggage or other items to the RickRak are included in the package, making it easy to mount the RickRak, add luggage, and ride out.

While the RickRak will accommodate different types of luggage, the company also makes its own bags designed to go with the rack, like the Top Dekk II premium roller

RickRak’s luggage system for 2019 and earlier Indian models offers a secure mount for luggage without the need for any straps or bungee cords. It’s powder coated for extra durability.

The GoPro Deluxe 360 Mount from RickRak offers a versatile action camera mount, and can be attached to multiple locations on a bike.

bag. The bag is made from UltraMax fabric for maximum UV protection and features rigid construction so it holds its shape, even when empty. The bag’s main compartment expands from 63 liters of carrying capacity to 73.5 liters, and there are a variety of internal and external pockets to keep smaller items perfectly organized. A sturdy, water proof rain cover tops off the package.

Over time, RickRak has expanded to offer more than just luggage. The GoPro Deluxe 360 Mount is available for Indian fitments, and there is a versatile clamp-mount ver sion that fits a variety of models to any type of handlebars or engine guard. The new RickRak Gas Kap Keeper has an inner magnet that keeps gas caps from getting dropped or lost during gas stops.

All RickRak products are made in Rick and Shane’s home state of North Carolina, in the city of Mooresville. ■

The Science of Stopping Evolved

Brake Pad

The evolution of motorcycle performance is an ongoing process and is forever linked to techno logical and product design innovations, from one end of a bike to the other. Next to horsepower, stopping power is equally as important, and SBS has been among the frontrunners of braking system technology for more than five decades.

SBS is always examining braking sys tem performance and looking ahead for performance growth potential. The result of countless hours of research and development, both in-house and with professional race teams, SBS is introducing its appropriately named Better Brakes series.

With availability kicking off for 2023, the SBS Better Brakes series intro duces proven advancements in four critical areas of brake pad design. SBS engineers have refined brake pad compounds across sintered and ce ramic applications. The new sintered pad compounds are completely cop per and nickel-free, and for ceramic pads, also antimony-free (save for the potential of some minimal dust particles). What this means for riders is better and more stable braking performance and stopping power.

The metallic materials in the revised compound provide an improved coef ficient of friction that results in more efficient braking grip throughout the brake sequence, showing between 9 percent to 12 percent improvement in stopping distance over the previous compounds during testing. This is an improvement your customers can ap preciate, whether it’s knocking down lap times or maneuvering in emergency traffic situations.

Heat is an enemy of braking performance, which means the more heat kept out of the brake pads, the more con sistent grip will be maintained. The Better Brakes series improved compounds also have an improved level of heat resilience, translating to a better sense of predict ability and reduced feeling of fade for riders.

Better Brakes series pads are manufactured with NUCAP NRS technology responsible for binding friction mate

Technology

rial to backing plates. This advanced material bonding method creates a practically unbreakable and corrosionsafe mechanical bond that is absolutely crucial for brake pads to perform their duties. Plus, this method also optimizes heat dissipation, further reassuring consistent braking performance.

The extensive development work from SBS proves its commitment to braking performance and overall riding experience. Evidence of this comes by way of a full approval of Better Brake series pads under the ECE R90 regulation. This European regulation specifies strict design, construc tion and performance standards, translating to a promise of quality and reliability for your customers. ■

BRAKE ROTORS Stopping at the Top Championship Brake Rotors

There are a lot of selling points that describe the highperformance characteristics of the SK2 rotors from Braking, but perhaps none gets the point across better than this one: These front rotors for streetbikes have helped Braking win 139 racing titles over the years.

Braking teamed up with top riders and teams all over the world to develop the SK2 rotors, and along the way, those teams have proven, again and again, just how much of a difference the right rotors can make in a competitive environment.

Some of the performance characteristics of the SK2 rotors are apparent at just a glance. The outer and inner edges of the disc have a non-round design, which allows for a better radial expansion in extreme heat conditions. No matter how hard street riders or racers are braking, these discs are up to the challenge.

Instead of using the typical round light ening holes to save weight, Braking designed its holes to specific angles and shapes. This change helps increase brake pad regeneration and improves braking response at high temperatures.

Each full-floating SK2 rotor features a stainless steel AISI410 rotor paired with an aluminum carrier. The lighter carrier further enhances the performance aspect of the SK2 rotor, and everything is CNC-machined and heat-treated for precision and durability. The rotor and carrier are connected with pins that are inserted at an angle to optimize the load transfer from the rotor to the carrier during braking, ensuring efficient stopping. ■

Maintenance-Free and More A

Chain with Many Benefits

Regina Chain has many people talking about its technologically advanced and maintenance-free HPE chain (High-Performance Endurance) that’s based on the company’s successful Z-Ring chain. Now, in addition to its 525 HPE chain, Regina Chain offers the lubrication-free HPE chain in 520 sizing that’s found on many popular Adventure touring and dual-sport bikes.

The new HPE 520 shares the same features of the HPE 525 that’s made it a popular choice among sportbike and Adventure touring enthusiasts alike. Foremost, the HPE’s

patented design means no need to periodically lubricate the chain; a striking difference over conventional chains typically requiring periodic lubrication.

That HPE chain’s unique lubrication-free design is the result of a coating known as Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon (taC), which is among the most advanced coatings available. Because of this, there is contact between the chain’s hardsurface ta-C-coated rollers and the drive sprockets’ teeth for more direct power transfer.

The HPE is also environmentally friendly because no petro leum products are released into the atmosphere. There is also less mechanical drag between chain and sprockets resulting in improved fuel economy for your customers’ motorcycles.

Additionally, your customers don’t need to purchase chain lubricants so the HPE is a money saver. An added aesthetic bonus? There’s no chain lubricating oil to fling onto the rear wheel and rear bodywork. ■

These days, convenience and cost are two major decision-making factors, and JENSEN’s amp (the JAHD440BT) checks those boxes. Convenience is delivered in the form of Bluetooth functionality. These 4-channel amps allow customers to control music directly from their smartphones, eliminating the need for a dedi cated source unit and reducing sound system costs.

JENSEN’s Bluetooth-enabled amplifiers offer great off-road audio whether it’s streaming from a smartphone or pumping from a source unit.

When paired with JENSEN’s universal speakers, an exten sive, powerful-sounding audio system can be achieved through a relatively small amount of cost and effort com pared to other audio kits – music to your customers’ ears.

Should your customers want to build a more elaborate au dio system in their machine, JENSEN’s powersports amps can easily be used with other source units and speakers simply by switching off Bluetooth. To top it all off, exten sive durability testing proves that JENSEN components are designed and tested to hold up in the outdoors. ■

Championship Chain Designed for Harsh Environments

Magna1 Motorsports rider Brycen Neal made an incredible comeback in 2022 to win the GNCC XC1 championship, and he did it with a Sunstar XTG Works TripleGuard chain on his Yamaha YFZ450R.

Neal had gone into the 2021 season as a favorite to win the XC1 championship, but a knee injury early in the season put him on the sidelines. He might have been out of contention for that year, but Neal worked hard to get back into racing form for 2022. His hard work paid off, and he clinched the championship in a nail-biter season finale at Ironman Raceway.

Sunstar is a proud supporter of Neal, who trusts the premium-level XTG Works TripleGuard chain to deliver power to the tires through even the toughest, most rug ged racing conditions.

The XTG Works TripleGuard sealed chain is built for offroad racing and the harsh conditions encountered in ATV and motorcycle competition. Sunstar’s TripleGuard sealed ring has three sealing lips and lubrication pools

per side of the ring for added protection and lubrication. The critical area of the chain is well-guarded from sand and dirt, and lubricant stays exactly where it’s supposed to, even under extreme riding conditions.

Available in 100-link and 120-link sizes, the XTG Works TripleGuard chain is ideal for motorcycles and ATVs of 750cc or smaller. The 520 chain also has a gold inner plate that resists rust and corrosion for even more durability in off-road conditions. ■
