Finding Cannon Ball’s Trail by D on Em de
O
ur annual Adventure Bike issue is surely one of my favorites of the entire year. It always reminds me of the best motorcycling adventure ride I ever took. Starting in 2012, I first began a two-year research project to retrace a ride taken a century earlier by one of the motorcycle sport’s first adventure riders, Erwin “Cannon Ball” Baker. On May 3, 1914, he left San Diego, California on a twin-cylinder Indian and rode 3,000+ miles of dirt, sand, and mud to New York City. He arrived there 11 ½ days later to set a new transcontinental speed record. The project, which resulted in a book I wrote and published called “Finding Cannon Ball’s Trail,” was intended to see what roads still existed from Cannon Ball’s time, and how closely to his route a modern-day ride could be done today? With much assistance from Joe Colombero, a friend and fellow journalist, we spent much of the first year riding out in the California and Arizona deserts exploring old dirt and sandy roads and possible routes through Arizona. Once we had it worked out across the west, it was all paved from there and Joe and I made our way to the east coast on the Santa Fe Trail, National Road (now US Highway 40) and the Lincoln Highway, roads once used by the wagon trains and early pioneers heading west.

Then came the final step of the two-year project. At 9 a.m. on May 3, 2014 – exactly 100 years to the minute that Baker had – a couple dozen friends left San Diego with me on our way to Manhattan. We rode a variety of brands and models of Adventure bikes through the challenging sand and dirt roads in California and again in Arizona, then it was on to New York on those historic highways. We arrived there just as Baker had on May 14th, exactly 100 years earlier. It was a great ride that called on the versatility of an Adventure bike, getting us through the sand and dirt in the west, some little “stop and go” towns in the Midwest and other long stretches of highway. I hope as you read this issue, that you will keep in mind the possibilities that you and/or your customers can have with a properly outfitted Adventure bike. ■

NEWS EVENTS Christian Craig 250CC WEST SUPERCROSS CHAMPION FOR 2022 @octopi.media photos
250cc Supercross West Champion Christian Craig had a spectacular season. "When people ask me why I'm so much better this year than ever, I say it's all the years of trying, leading up to this moment," he said of his Championship title.
C
hristian Craig is the 250cc Supercross West Champion for 2022 and it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy. In 2022, the THOR rider had the best Supercross season of his career, with the Star Yamaha Racing rider winning four of the ten rounds and finishing on the podium in five of the rounds he didn’t win. He clinched the title with a smart, calculated eighth place finish in the season finale winning the championship with 230 points, 10 more than his nearest competitor. Spectacular to watch, Christian is a great starter and a dynamic, clean racer whose wife and children were at every event. At 30 years old, Craig is a veteran racer who turned pro in 2009, retired from racing in 2013 due to numerous injuries including a broken back, but then returned to full-time competition in 2016. “When people ask me why I’m so much better this year than ever, I say it’s all the years of trying, leading up to this moment,” says Christian. “Learning throughout the seasons, learning what I have to do to be a championship contender, and that’s put me to where I am today.” A second-generation motocross racer, Christian followed in the footsteps of his father, Mike Craig, who won one 450cc class Supercross main event. A dedicated family man, Christian is married with three children. He and his wife Paige host a series of YouTube video-logs featuring footage from the races and their other family trips. He has friends and fans all over the world.

“I think Christian is an amazing athlete and has always had the tools to do the job,” said Andy Gustafson, THOR Motocross Pro Rider Support Manager. “His never-giveup attitude and hard work ethic have gotten him where he is today. He’s a delight to have and such a positive role model for many fans and fathers! He always has his family with him at the races and practice track – they make parenting look easy! THOR Motocross would like to congratulate Christian Craig on his West Coast 250cc Supercross Championship,” said Gustafson. “His heart and dedication to succeeding has paid off in a big way giving him a running start moving into the 450cc Motocross Nationals.” THOR’s Gustafson was more than happy to award Christian his first #1 jersey of his career at the season finale after he received his #1 plate from the AMA. “This feels like a dream,” Christian said. “I wrote on a white board before the season started what it would take to win this championship, and now it’s real. I love this feeling!” Christian will be riding aboard a Star Racing Yamaha 450 in the upcoming Pro Motocross National Championships. He’ll be lining up with his THOR teammate and friend defending 450cc National Motocross Champion Dylan Ferrandis (also aboard a Star Racing Yamaha). With the 250cc Supercross West Championship now in his resume, Christian will carry that confidence and momentum into the 450cc Pro Motocross Nationals where he will be a contender for the title. ■

upercross is over and now it’s time for the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship Series. Parts Unlimited/THOR is fielding some of the best teams in the nation and the defending 450cc Champion, Dylan Ferrandis is wearing THOR again in 2022. Let’s have a look at the riders.
450cc Pro Motocross Dylan Ferrandis #1 Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha came to America via France and stunned everybody with his speed, work ethic, and focus, while nailing down a long list of impressive accomplishments. Ferrandis won the 250cc Motocross title in 2020, and moved to the 450cc class in 2021 where he won the 450cc Motocross title in his rookie year on the big bike. Look for Ferrandis to fiercely defend his 450cc Championship in 2022. Christian Craig #28 Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha – Craig is coming off his best ever Supercross season where he won the 250cc Supercross West Championship. He’s coming into the Motocross season with momentum and confidence, wearing THOR and riding a 450cc Yamaha for the Pro Motocross Nationals. THOR’s Aaron Plessinger #7 plans to line up at the first round on his Red Bull KTM in the 450cc Pro Motocross Nationals after healing up from a broken arm and sitting out a large part of the Supercross Series. The 2018 Pro Motocross 250cc Champion should be a contender on the KTM. Twisted Tea Suzuki *HEP* will field both Justin Bogle #19, and Brandon Hartranft #41, in the 450cc class. Both riders

Antonio Cairoli #222 will don THOR once again to contest the first two rounds of the 450 Motocross Nationals aboard a Red Bull KTM. The nine-time World Motocross Champion says he always wanted to race the American series and is coming out of retirement to check the USA off his racing bucket list. The winner of 94 motos in the Motocross World Championships could prove to be a factor in the USA Motocross Nationals. He is committed to the first two rounds, but will likely keep racing if he is successful.
250cc Motocross Nationals
Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha is the prime source of 250cc talent wearing THOR Racewear. The team has always been strong and produced several National Championships. Justin Cooper #32 enters his fifth year with the team and is coming off an impressive 2021 season. After taking the 2021 250cc Supercross West crown, the New Yorker backed it up with a great outdoor season. He hopes to add the 2022 250cc Pro Motocross National Championship to his resume. Levi Kitchen #59 capped off his amateur career with a pair of titles at the 2021 AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s and was named the Nicky Hayden AMA Motocross Horizon Award Winner. He made his pro debut at the Pro Motocross RedBud National and is now eager to start his first full season in the 2022 pro ranks. Nate Thrasher #49 turned a lot of heads during his first full season in the pro ranks, taking two 2021 250cc Supercross wins. As the winner of the 2022 Supercross 250 East/West Shootout finale, Thrasher will be coming into the 2022 Pro Motocross 250cc class with confidence and swagger. Colt Nichols #45 won the 2021 250cc Supercross East Supercross Championship, but injuries kept him from defending that title in 2022. When he’s healthy, Nichols is a contender. Nick Ramano #411 is the 2021 Amateur Rider of the Year, and he is turning pro in 2022 in the Pro Motocross Nationals. The young Amateur champion will be learning what if takes to race in the 250cc Pro class. ■

oyal Enfield’s groundbreaking Build. Train. Race. (BTR) programs, proudly supported by Parts Unlimited, are off to a fast start on both the Road Racing and Flat Track fronts for 2022. In its biggest year yet, the Royal Enfield BTR programs are each fielding a full grid of 15 female racers, taking on six rounds of the MotoAmerica North American Road Race Championship for the Road Racing series, and seven rounds of the American Flat Track Series on the Flat Track side. Both series are now underway with some fierce competition. The Build. Train. Race. Flat Track program was the first to see action in the 2022 season, with the first round serving as a “BTR Select” exhibition for the returning class of BTR racers, as well as any new participants who had their bikes ready in time, to get some track time. But it was at the I-70 Half Mile in Odessa, Missouri, where the full roster of seven returning riders and eight new faces took to the track.

The women endured some wild weather conditions and limited track time at the new American Flat Track venue, which sent many of them to the start grid without as much preparation as they would have liked. But the BTR racers still put on an incredible show, with Jaycee Jones leading the way from start to finish. Behind Jones, the battle to watch was between newcomer Zaria Martens and BTR veteran Jillian Deschenes. The two dueled throughout the race, much to the Missouri crowd’s delight, with 18-year-old Martens besting Deschenes at the flag. BTR Road Racing roared to life at the VIR MotoAmerica round on May 22. Following a test session at Barber Motorsports Park, the BTR women took to Virginia International Raceway for the first race of 2022, where Kayleigh Buyck (pronounced Buick) emerged on top of the most competitive grid BTR has ever seen. Buyck had a dominant weekend at VIR, topping practice and qualifying on her way to victory, but it was anything but easy for the 30-year-old New Yorker, who ran into trouble of her own with a crash in Q2. It was a rush to repair her Continental GT 650 in time for the start, but Buyck remained focused on the task at hand.
For STREET use
Cora Tennyson hunted down Buyck for the lead in the early laps of Sunday’s main race, and threatened to run away with the victory, but a track mishap gave Buyck the advantage. From there, Buyck resumed the lead and held it to the finish, despite enduring some heavy pressure from Crystal Martinez, who finished less than a second behind for runner-up honors. Chloe Peterson rounded out the podium for an emotional finish. ■

dventure riding has been one of the fastestgrowing segments of motorcycling for a while now, and it’s safe to say the craze isn’t going to fade anytime soon. Riders love capable motorcycles that can keep going when the pavement gives out. All the growth, of course, doesn’t mean Adventure riding is new. Metzeler has been along for the ride since the earliest days of the Adventure segment. Back in 1980, there wasn’t even a term for bikes and tires that were built for both on-road and off-road prowess. There was, however, the BMW R80 GS. BMW and Metzeler teamed up to develop an enduro tire for the bike that could tackle both the street and the dirt. The result was Metzeler’s first Adventure tire, as well as the beginnings of a whole new segment of motorcycling.

Today, Metzeler is still helping riders get out and explore, whether that’s on the road or on the trail, or a mix of both. The latest Adventure tires from Metzeler include the Karoo 4, a true 50/50 tire and the latest iteration of Metzeler’s bestof-both-worlds Karoo tire. Additionally, Metzeler also offers the Karoo Street and Karoo Extreme. The Tourance Next 2 is another new Metzeler tire that caters to Adventure riders as well as the Sport-Touring market. It is even more pavement-oriented than the Karoo Street, nicely rounding out Metzeler’s Adventure options. The Karoo 4 and Tourance Next 2 tires are simply continuations of Metzeler’s long and innovative history in Adventure riding. As tire technology and motorcycle capabilities continue to improve, Metzeler is able to continue refining the Adventure tire segment to offer top quality, reliability and performance.

ADVENTURE
A History of
NEW TIRES WITH A LONG LEGACY
Ever since teaming up with BMW back in 1980 to develop an enduro tire for the R80 GS, Metzeler has been heavily involved in what is now known as the Adventure riding segment. The company’s Tourance Next 2 tires are road-oriented, but can readily handle dirt roads with confidence.
KAROO 4: FROM TRAIL TO TARMAC
The Karoo 4 is the most advanced version of Metzeler’s Karoo tire to date. Its predecessor, the Karoo 3, was designed to give Adventure Touring riders a tire that was capable in all conditions. The Karoo 4 is the evolution of that concept, with updated features to deliver an even better experience. When it comes to off-road riding, the Karoo 4 offers outstanding traction across various terrain styles. Scoopshaped blocks maximize the rack effect on softer surfaces, like sandy terrains, while the knob layout gives support on hard pack, even at lean angle. Additionally, the knobs are shaped to bolster center traction and to provide lateral selfcleaning – a big bonus across muddy surfaces. Metzeler designed the Karoo 4 to be equally reliable during on-road riding. The carcass has a stiffer structure, and multi-radius profiles improve both riding in a straight line
and grip while leaning through corners. A dual-compound rear tire enhances tire life, and lateral knobs ensure a good response under heavy loads. That means Adventure bikes that are fully loaded with luggage will still perform predictably with the Karoo 4 tires. Any Adventure rider has to be ready for wet weather, and the Karoo 4 is ready, too. The tread design and profile shape help battle not just rain and wet surfaces, but cold temperatures, as well. Emergency braking in the wet is designed to be as smooth as possible, too. This is due in part to the way the Karoo 4 tires work with electronic rider aids, like ABS. Metzeler engineered a new rubber formulation for the Karoo 4 to make sure it can stand up to the surprising objects riders might encounter along the way. The rubber has improved resistance to abrasion, cutting and tearing, so riders can be confident that their tires are up to the challenges of the terrain.

The new Metzeler Tourance Next 2 tires are roadoriented, with characteristics that let them confidently tackle all kinds of roads – no matter what the condition – with ease.
The Metzeler Tourance Next 2 tire
One of the ways the Karoo 4 is able to deliver so many great on-road and off-road features is its optimized footprint, which has a larger amount of knobs in the contact area. The knobs and tread design do double duty when it comes to dealing with dirt and mud; the tread pattern picks up material to assist with traction but also clears it out for ongoing selfcleaning to help keep buildup from becoming a burden.
METZELER TIRES
Key technology found in the Karoo 4 includes Metzeler DYMATEC, or Dynamic Mould Angle Technology. This means the tire design features variable groove wall angles at different lean angles. The result is the right amount of tread resistance at every stage of a turn as well as uniform wear.
22
The Karoo 4 tires also feature INTERACT technology. The steel belts have multi-zone tension that improves feedback, helping riders get predictable, confident performance while at lean. The technology also maximizes steering neutrality and the tire’s performance in the wet.
TOURANCE NEXT 2: ENDURO CONFIDENCE
The new Metzeler Tourance Next 2 tires are road-oriented, with characteristics that let them confidently tackle all kinds of roads – no matter what the condition – with ease. Even dirt roads are no problem thanks to steep grooves that provide lateral stability and efficient water evacuation. The tires also handle all levels of loaded up with ease – whether a bike is fully loaded or just carrying the essentials, and whether or not there is a passenger aboard, the Tourance Next 2 tires remain nimble and stable. The Tourance Next 2 is, of course, derived from the legendary Metzeler Tourance Next tire. Like the Karoo 4, Metzeler injected the Tourance Next 2 with INTERACT technology and DYMATEC. The result is a tire that offers agile, neutral behavior as well as wear uniformity across the lean angle. During testing, Metzeler found that the Tourance Next 2 has made a huge advancement when it comes to braking in wet conditions. This is due in part to the combination of the new compounds and Metzeler Hyperbase construction, which helps the tires perform well even in cold temperatures. Chemical grip can’t be forgotten, either, since it gives a big boost to performance in wet and cold conditions. The Tourance Next 2 features a new adaptive high-silica compound in the center compound stripe to boost both wet performance as well as stability. The shoulder compounds also feature silica to ensure grip while cornering. Control is an important feature of the Tourance Next 2 tires, but so is comfort. The multi-pitch knob layout reduces tire noise and increases rolling smoothness for a more pleasant ride. ■

hile dual-sport motorcycles have been around since the beginning of the sport, we are now firmly in the heyday of the Adventure Bike era with many riders drawn to the functionality and fun of the broad class of do-it-all motorcycles.
From BMW to Yamaha – and now Harley-Davidson! – manufacturers are producing everything from simple, small-displacement knobby-tired workhorses to fully featured models that are equally at home touring the highway as they are blasting along off-road. Even though powerful cruisers and sport-oriented machines still dominate the on-road segment, it’s this growing niche of motorcycles that has captured the fascination of riders looking to expand their riding horizons. In fact, the Dual Sport segment saw a nearly 19 percent increase in retail sales in 2021 over 2020, and are already up 15 percent in the first quarter of 2022 compared to the prior year, according to the Motorcycle Industry Council. Clutch Kits for the Yamaha Super Ténéré
Replacing the Yamaha Super Ténéré’s diaphragm-type spring assembly is easy using Barnett’s new Coil Spring Conversion Kit. The Barnett upgrade results in smoother, more progressive and controllable engagement.
T
here are two primary reasons for replacing a motorcycle’s clutch – either the clutch discs or related components such as pressure plates and springs are worn out, or the bike owner simply wants an upgrade to a stronger, more durable clutch assembly. In either case, Barnett is a great source for the replacement option. Dating back to 1948, when Charlie Barnett formed Barnett Tool & Engineering, the Californiabased company has supplied replacement clutch kits and parts for an endless list of motorcycles. The list includes popular Adventure Touring and dual-sport bikes, too, among them Yamaha’s current Super Ténéré, which happens to be a prime candidate for a coil-spring conversion. Replacing the Ténéré’s diaphragm-type spring assembly is easy, using Barnett’s all-new – and much stronger – Coil Spring Conversion Kit. The Barnett upgrade results in smoother, more progressive and controllable engagement, an important feature when negotiating any Adventure bike through the back country. Barnett’s new Coil Spring Conversion Kit for the Super Ténéré includes a CNC-machined, hard-anodized billet aluminum pressure plate, two sets of six heavy-duty coil springs, and accompanying hardware for quick and easy installation. The two included sets of coil springs provide three different spring pressure options for engines in either stock or high-performance levels of tune. Barnett’s Coil Spring Conversion Kit is a bolt-on design so there’s no

further modification necessary during installation. And, like all Barnett products, the Coil Spring Conversion parts are made in the USA. Barnett’s latest Coil Spring Conversion Kit joins a growing list of similar clutch kits for other Yamaha models originally equipped with diaphragm-type springs. These conversion kits remain popular among owners of early V-Max, Road Star and Royal Star models first offered several years ago. In fact, owners of Yamaha’s original Super Ténéré XTZ1200 continue to update their bikes with the Coil Spring Conversion Kits that have been available through Parts Unlimited the past few years. Street and sport riders continue to rely on Barnett for their replacement clutches, too. Complete clutch kits using Barnett’s race-proven Carbon or Kevlar friction plates, tempered steel drive plates and heavy-duty springs, are available through the Parts Unlimited catalog. All Barnett clutch assemblies have tempered steel plates that are de-burred at the factory to remove all sharp edges for smooth and consistent operation. In addition, Barnett heavy-duty springs are made from chromed silicon, then shot-peened and heat treated to prevent sag. Finally, before packaging and shipping to dealers, each clutch assembly is pre-measured for exact stack height. ■

TIRES
Into the Wild
A Full Range of Adventure Touring Tires The MICHELIN Scorcher Adventure tires were co-developed and co-branded with HarleyDavidson, and are OE on the Pan America.

M
ichelin has Adventure Touring riders covered with a complete range of Adventure tires to suit the many styles of riding found in that category.
The MICHELIN Anakee III tire sits at one end of the Adventure tire spectrum since it is designed as a 90/10 tire for riders who stick mostly to paved roads, but still want the option to get off the beaten path now and then. The MICHELIN Anakee III is defined by its excellent handling and stability. This is achieved in part with a more rigid tire carcass and a profile that is inspired by Michelin’s Sport Touring radial tires. Whether riding solo or two-up, taking a short ride or loaded with luggage, Anakee III tires will give an Adventure Touring rider a smooth, predictable ride. While the MICHELIN Anakee III tire is available for a range of models, it is also OE on several BMW models, like the BMW R 1200 GS. Representing the next step on the Adventure tire scale, the MICHELIN Anakee Adventure is an 80/20 tire that provides great stability and, thanks to the silica tread compounds, outstanding wet grip. At the same time, it gives Adventure Touring riders plenty of confidence off-road. The front MICHELIN Anakee Adventure tire has MICHELIN 2CT Technology, and the rear features MICHELIN 2CT+ Technology. This blend of compounds results in outstanding stability, handling and longevity when coupled with MICHELIN Bridge Block Technology, an optimized profile and a precision tread pattern.

The MICHELIN Anakee Wild tire is for those riders who want to spend as much time off the road as on it. This true 50/50 tire can handle challenging off-road conditions while still providing a great experience on the road. MICHELIN Bridge Block Technology adds stability in corners while riding on paved surfaces, but the deep, knobby tread blocks can bite into tough off-road terrain. The radial construction offers good sidewall flex and a reduced need to air down during offroad riding. MICHELIN 2CT and 2CT+ Technology add to the handling and longevity of the MICHELIN Anakee Wild, and silica tread compounds enhance wet grip. When Harley-Davidson decided to get into the Adventure Touring market with the Pan America, the brand turned to Michelin’s expert knowledge of the category. The MICHELIN Scorcher Adventure tires were co-developed and co-branded with Harley-Davidson, and are OE on the Pan America. Like the MICHELIN Anakee Adventure, the MICHELIN Scorcher Adventure is a capable 80/20 tire. By combining MICHELIN Bridge Block Technology and MICHELIN 2CT+ Technology, these tires have exceptional high-speed stability. The dual-compound design of the MICHELIN Scorcher Adventure tires, the tread pattern and the profile are all designed to ensure Pan America riders get great handling and consistency, mile after mile. The Pan America can also be fitted with MICHELIN Anakee Wild tires for even more off-road possibilities. Dirty Bike, Clean Components Air Filter and Chain Treatments
R
iding trails, unpaved roads and even forging one’s own path can be fun, but if a motorcycle’s components get too dirty, a good day can quickly turn into a bad one. Whether it’s an off-road rider or an Adventure rider who wants to get off the paved roads for a while, LIQUI MOLY has products that help keep the airflow into the engine clear and clean as well as a chain lube that is great for dusty environments. LIQUI MOLY is well known for its high-quality oils and additives, but the company makes a broad range of additional motorcycle fluids and lubricants, too. Among them are products that help keep things clean, even in the dirtiest of riding environments. Before tackling any ride that will kick up a lot of dust and dirt, LIQUI MOLY recommends cleaning the air filter with its Motorbike Air Filter Cleaner. This gives the air filter a fresh start by removing dirt, oil and grease, which allows the engine to breathe properly. The air filter cleaner arrives as a concentrate, and just a small amount needs to be mixed with water to create an outstanding cleaner. This concentrated formula makes the cleaner an economical choice. While the air filter cleaner is strong enough to remove grime, it is gentle on the foam pores. It is also solvent-free and biodegradable.
LIQUI MOLY Motorbike Filter Oil
LIQUI MOLY Motorbike Chain Lube is a fully synthetic grease designed for the rigors of dusty, dirty environments.
Once a foam air filter has been thoroughly cleaned, it’s time for the LIQUI MOLY Motorbike Air Filter Oil. This step is an easy one, but critical to keeping the filter working at its optimal level. The oil is specifically designed to treat foam air filters, trapping dirt and dust even in extreme off-road conditions. It helps the engine continue to breathe in clean air for continued performance. Of course, keeping a motorcycle chain protected from the elements is an important part of maintenance. LIQUI MOLY Motorbike Chain Lube is a fully synthetic grease designed for the rigors of dusty, dirty environments. In other words, it is a great choice for off-road and Adventure riders. The lube is extremely adhesive, and since it is water resistant, it will stand up well against rain, occasional water crossings and even mud. The lube helps reduce wear and chain elongation, too, which extends the service life of the chain. ■

XW-Ring chains offer great high-speed, extreme heat performance, and are designed for a variety of environments from the street to off-road. so that GXW can handle anything your customers dish out. When one chain can take an Adventure rider halfway around the world, the possibilities are endless!
Maintenance All sealed chains require routine cleaning and maintenance in order to perform as designed. RK recommends that your customers use a cleaner specific to motorcycle chains and is designed to be used on sealed chains. The company states, “Do not use brake cleaner, engine cleaner or any cleaner that contains acid or caustic chemicals. These harsh ingredients can damage the chain’s seals, reducing the performance and wear life of the chain and will void the chain’s warranty.” ■

he United States offers a vast playground for offroaders across the nation with seemingly endless miles of roads and trails, both well-traveled and those waiting to be explored. From expansive deserts to tree-lined mountains, two-wheeled exploration is something riders and enthusiasts everywhere live for. Of course, embarking on these adventures requires the proper equipment. A capable and reliable motorcycle is key, but equally as critical is proper riding gear and personal equipment. While born from a love for motocross, the passion for two-wheeled, off-road freedom carries over strongly with the THOR crew. As such, they’ve developed a line of off-road gear and hydration packs designed and prepared to take on miles of terrain. Hydration packs are like the personal multi-tool of long distance, off-road riding. THOR’s 2022 line of hydration packs consists of a trio of packs prepared to serve your ranging customers’ preferences and needs. The first hydration pack in the lineup is the Vapor Pack. This pack houses a 1.5-liter bladder within a durable and compact shell. The next step up is the Hydrant Pack with an increased water capacity of 2-liters. This pack also features additional storage volume separated across four different compartments also secured by water resistant zippers. For your customers putting in those extra-long miles on several day adventure trips, THOR’s Reservoir Pack offers maximum water capacity with a 3-liter bladder. Storage capacity is also maximized, along with adjustable buckle straps on the front allowing riders to cinch down additional luggage. Each of THOR’s hydration packs share high-quality construction and features, including a big bore bladder lid for easy cleaning and filling, a magnetic bite valve holder to keep it out of the rider’s way when not needed and a thermal-lined bladder compartment. Additionally, each pack’s harness is angled away from the underarms, optimizing movement freedom. ridgestone is ready to send riders off on an adventure, whether the way is mostly paved or often off-road. With the introduction of the new Battlax Adventure Trail AT41, Bridgestone now has a complete Adventure tire line. On one end of the Adventure tire options, the Bridgestone Battlax Adventurecross AX41 is a 40 percent on-road/60 percent off-road tire designed for Adventure riders who really want to keep their options open. The Battlax Adventure Trail AT41 has arrived to serve those who ride on a mix of surfaces, but lean more toward paved roads, offering an 80/20 mix. Meanwhile, the Battlax Adventure A41 is a 90/10 combination for riders who primarily stick to on-road riding. Bridgestone designed the new Adventure Trail AT41 for riders who want a more aggressive tread design for light off-road riding without giving up great touring performance and enhanced wet traction on the pavement. This perfect balance is achieved through design touches like combining MS Belt technology and an optimized block pattern to promote stability. Bridgestone’s 3LC + Cap & Base technology on the rear tire provides excellent traction in wet and dry conditions, while the new compound on the front tire improves both longevity and wet traction. The AT41 is designed with precision grooves that provide wet traction and excellent drainage, further enhancing the wet-weather capabilities of the tire. The new tire is offered in four front sizes and five rear sizes. provide great off-road traction. At the same time, the tread blocks have Bridgestone’s Even-Wear Design to improve on-road performance by reducing deformation of the tread blocks. The result is a smooth ride on the road and tread blocks that are ready to go when the pavement ends. The Adventure A41 tires allow Adventure riders to tour with confidence, knowing that their bike and tires can handle those times when the paved road runs out. The A41 is the third generation of Bridgestone’s Adventure Touring tire, and this version features 3LC Dual Compound construction on both the front and rear. By placing a durable compound in the center of the tire and softer compounds on the shoulders, riders get both longevity and maximum grip in the corners. The rear tire goes one step further, with the hard compound overlapping the soft in the shoulders to further enhance durability. Mono-Spiral Belt construction aids stability in all scenarios, while a silica-rich compound gives an extra boost to grip in both cold and wet conditions. Altogether, the Adventure A41 tires exceed the wet-weather performance of any previous Bridgestone Adventure Touring tire. ■

RIDING APPAREL
What Lies Beneath
Lightweight, Flexible Body Armor Options for other activities where body armor is a good idea, like mountain biking and snowboarding. It’s important for every rider to be comfortable, but Adventure riders particularly need to be able to ride for long periods and move easily on the bike. That means comfort and flexibility are an absolute must when it comes to body armor. ICON designed the Field Armor Compression gear for both of those things. Each piece of Field Armor Compression gear begins with a four-way stretch Hydradry mesh chassis. This material is thin enough to slip on easily underneath jackets and pants, and it conforms to the rider’s body without being binding. In other words, it is stretchy in all the right places, so riders don’t have to worry about chafing or bunching. It’s worth noting that “all the right places” doesn’t just mean a great fit for men. Field Armor Compression gear was designed with women in mind, too, making these base layers true unisex products. Hydradry also has outstanding moisture-wicking properties, so staying cool in the saddle is no problem. The material has been reinforced with DuPont Kevlar fiber, too, which means the Field Armor Compression line offers both impact and abrasion resistance, all in one piece. This best-of-both-worlds combo makes the gear a popular choice for dual-sport riders since it’s a solid barrier on the street and the trail.
Icon’s Field Armor Compression gear is designed to add an extra layer of protection under your customers’ riding gear. The D3O armor is low profile and has outstanding shock absorption properties to mitigate forces in an impact.

CON might not be a brand people immediately think of when it comes to Adventure riding, but hiding underneath the designs aimed at setting the streetbike world on edge are the brand’s Field Armor Compression base layers. No matter what kind of adventure someone is on, this collection of body armor is an ideal way to add that critical extra barrier between the body and the ground. And that adventure doesn’t have to be motorcycling. While the Field Armor Compression gear is great for street and off-road riding, it’s lightweight and flexible enough

Of course, the real draw of ICON’s Field Armor is the D3O armor in impact zones. Thanks to their design, the Field Armor Compression pieces feature more D3O coverage than standard jackets or pants. Thanks to its low profile, D3O armor is exceptionally easy to add underneath other clothing and gear. It might be slim and flexible, but D3O armor is a big improvement over the traditional foambased armor. The unique design has outstanding shock absorption properties to mitigate forces in an impact. ICON offers the Field Armor Compression base layers as a Shirt, Pants, Arms and Knees. The Field Armor Compression Shirt offers full upper-body coverage, with D3O armor in the chest, back, shoulders and arms – from the collarbone all the way to the wrist. The Field Armor Compression Pants include armor in the hips, upper thighs, knees, shins, and tailbone/seat. Field Armor Compression Arms and Knees both include a protective plate on top of the D3O armor. ■

Practical Protection
Titanium Tip-Over Bars for BMWs
Akrapovič has engineered a set of lower and upper titanium protection bars for the 2019 through 2022 BMW R1250GS that shield the cylinder heads, radiators and bodywork from damage during tip-overs.
B
MW’s R1250GS is the Swiss Army knife of motorcycles, capable of devouring freeway miles while touring or bashing down a trail while exploring off road. It’s a durable machine with a proven track record, but as the GS has evolved and gained liquid cooling and sophisticated cylinder heads, it has also become more vulnerable. That’s where Akrapovič’s new titanium protection bars come in, offering an unparalleled defense against damage while adding premium style and keeping weight to an absolute minimum. Calling on decades of experience working with titanium while crafting high-quality exhaust systems, Akrapovič has engineered a set of lower and upper protection bars for the 2019 through 2022 R1250GS that shield the cylinder heads, radiators and bodywork from damage during tip-overs. Compared to steel bars, these titanium cages offer close to a 40 percent weight savings. The lower protection bars weigh in at just 8.6 pounds, while the upper cages add just 5.1 pounds to the big GS. That’s a small weight penalty for a tremendous amount of protection for delicate and expensive componentry. Akrapovič started from the ground up with this new product, knowing that lightweight, strong, corrosionresistant titanium would be the perfect material for protecting BMW’s rugged GS. The titanium protection bars are constructed from sandblasted titanium tubing in 22mm and 25mm diameters with a 2mm wall thickness.

This exotic material is precision bent, equipped with laser-cut and finely machined brackets and mounting flanges, and TIG welded to create a singular unit that offers incredible strength and a perfect fit. The bars integrate perfectly with the BMW’s existing components, mounting to engine and frame lugs via 8mm and 10mm hardware to effectively distribute impact forces and weight. Since the lower bars cling closely to the engine, there is no restriction on lean angle. As an added bonus, the lower and upper bars offer the possibility of attaching extra luggage, equipment and auxiliary lights. The sandblasted finish of the titanium protection bars give them an attractive luster that resists scratches and marring – perfect for hard-charging Adventure riders. In case the characteristic luster of these protection bars doesn’t convey their construction, “titanium” is laserengraved along the lower edge of both assemblies. The Akrapovič logo is also subtly displayed on these titanium protection bars, so anyone who sees them will recognize the quality and legacy the components represent. Akrapovic has a strong reputation as a constructor of lightweight exhaust systems that offer impressive craftsmanship and excellent performance. Now those same attributes are available in a premium set of protection bars for BMW’s R1250GS. ■

Off-Road Stopping Power
Brake Pads for Dual-Sport and Adventure Riding
A
ccording to Motorcycle Industry Council research, there was an increase in the number of dualpurpose and designated off-road motorcycles by 102 percent and 56 percent, respectively, in the American motorcycle market through 2014 to 2020. The concentration of this shift will vary based on region and ridership, but what remains consistent are the differing requirements of off-road brake systems versus on-road. The thoroughly experienced motorcycle braking experts at SBS have been keeping their finger on the pulse of the motorcycle industry for many seasons, ensuring they’re one step ahead of the stopping needs of riders everywhere. In developing and manufacturing the company’s brake pads and other components, SBS prioritizes experiential needs from the rider perspective. SBS understands riders want to feel connected with the bike and want the best possible feeling for the terrain when it comes to braking. While many modern adventure bike and similar models such as the BMW 1250GS, KTM Enduro R line and Honda’s Africa Twin feature many electronic, control-assisting systems, a simple yet effective braking control practice is ensuring brake pads are changed before surpassing their optimal performance range. Exposure to dust, water, mud and other environmental factors when riding off-road introduces a new wear factor to braking systems when comparing to street riding. Not only is off-road braking power decreased off-road, but operation in those elements can create premature wear conditions, something riders ought to stay mindful of. SBS’ SP range of conductive sinter brake pads are the product of hours of development and testing and are manufactured using proprietary technology to achieve brake pads that aim to restore and improve braking performance and longevity. Not only do SBS pads help achieve impressive stopping power, they’re designed to deliver that performance consistently, resisting the potential fading feeling caused by heat. One of SBS’ brake pad performance secrets is in its conductive sinter material. This braking surface material is the modern standard in achieving the necessary balance between consistent stopping power and high-mileage durability. Plus, SBS is also able to meet environmental sustainability standards with its conductive sinter production in Denmark. Offered for an impressively wide range of both on and offroad models, SBS brake pads can help provide your riders enjoyment and peace of mind through stopping power for many miles to come. ■

A Versatile Performance Chain
S
ometimes, a part only works for a very narrow segment of powersports. Other times, a product is so versatile that, although it’s designed for one riding segment, it becomes popular with customers in entirely different areas of powersports. The Sunstar SS 520 EXR1 chain is like that. Originally designed for use with smaller dual-sport and Adventure bikes, the chain’s popularity goes far beyond that segment of motorcycling. These days, in addition to dual-sport and Adventure riders, the Sunstar SS 520 EXR1 is also popular among top-level racers. Supercross and motocross riders as well as top motocross and XC ATV racers count on the SS 520 EXR1 to get them to the top of the podium. Sunstar designed the SS 520 EXR1 to be very lightweight and thin, which is part of what makes this sealed chain so popular with professional racers. Not only is the chain performance-minded, but it is also strong. The SS 520 EXR1 has a tensile strength of 8,000 lbs., and all components are heat treated. Dualguard sealing on the chain links means that there are two sealing lips

and lubrication pools per side, resulting in lower friction and longer chain life. Between the light weight, strength and durability, it’s easy to see why a chain designed for dual-sport and Adventure applications has gained such a popular following among other riding disciplines. In all, the SS 520 EXR1 chain is ideal for any motocross or ATV applications from 125cc up to 450cc. ■

Brake Rotors for Performance, Confidence
A
dventure riding is all about going pretty much wherever the rider wants to go, but stopping is just as important. Braking has rotors for Adventure and dual-sport bikes to help riders brake efficiently and consistently, featuring non-round designs and strategic cutouts for performance even under extreme conditions. SK2 rotors are a popular seller for Braking, and they fit a range of models, like the Ducati Multistrada and the Yamaha MT-09. The heat-treated steel discs float in an aluminum carrier, providing more progressive braking power. The unique non-round design of the SK2 rotors improves heat dissipation. Designed for on-road use, the rotors can even be used for racing since the design dissipates heat efficiently even in hard-braking situations. The cutouts in both the rotor and carrier aid in brake pad regeneration and reduce weight, too. In all, the SK2 rotors are an outstanding performance rotor. Braking’s W-Fix front and rear steel rotors can be used for anything from Adventure riding to Supermoto, and

Brake Pad Combo for Controlled Stopping
N
ot all disc brake pads are created equal. Some are more responsive at stopping a motorcycle than others, and that’s a good thing because it helps dual-sport and Adventure Touring riders fine-tune their bikes’ braking behavior for certain situations dictated by terrain traction, slope steepness and even rider experience. Those and other variables affect how a bike performs under braking. That’s important because the outcome can mean the difference between a controlled stop and an ugly situation. With the summer riding season approaching, this information certainly warrants repeating and DP Brakes suggests a combination of two of its popular brake pads for maximized braking performance, especially for offroad. Specifically, DP Brakes recommends equipping the front calipers on dual-sport and Adventure bikes with SDP Sport HH+ sintered pads that offer maximum stopping power where it’s needed most. DP Brakes suggests loading the rear brake caliper with DP Standards, because the performance parameters of these
DP Brakes’ pads are a popular upgrade for dual-sport and Adventure bikes that need stopping power in all types of conditions.
pads are closer to those of a motorcycle’s OEM specs. This combination – SDP Sport HH+ with the Standards – is especially beneficial when a bike’s ABS is switched off, effectively retaining the intended stopping performance. Many dual-sport and Adventure riding schools have adopted this combination with success. In addition, DP pads offer a high level of control and durability over OEM pads, plus they minimize brake dust residue on the bike’s wheel assemblies. ■

HELMETS
Looking Forward
A Popular Off-Road Helmet Gets New Style Since its debut, the Moose Racing F.I. Agroid helmet has been a popular choice for off-road riders and racers.
S
ince its debut, the Moose Racing F.I. Agroid helmet has been a popular choice for offroad riders and racers. The new F.I. Agroid Camo helmet gives riders the latest in helmet technology plus great style. Of course, Moose Racing also has goggles to go with the helmet, including one option that comes with a full roll-off system for muddy rides. The edgy, camo-meets-contemporary graphic on the new F.I. Agroid Camo helmet looks great, of course, but the real draw to the F.I. Agroid helmet line has always been what’s inside. The F.I. Agroid helmet is equipped with MIPS technology, which is an advanced design that helps mitigate forces in an impact. The MIPS Brain Protection System (BPS) consists of a low-friction layer inserted between the shell and the liner of the helmet, and it is designed to help deflect energy during an angled head impact. The low-friction layer allows a slight sliding motion in all directions, which reduces the rotational motion that is transmitted to the brain in an impact. By absorbing and deflecting some of that force, the MIPS BPS system is designed to reduce the risk of brain injury. In addition to the integrated MIPS BPS system, the F.I. Agroid helmet has a multi-density EPS liner to further aid in impact absorption. All of these defensive layers sit under a lightweight, injection-molded polycarbonate shell,

which the team at Moose Racing carefully engineered to ensure an optimal fit. That shell is covered in the new camo graphic, which is available in four different color combinations. Riders who prefer a low-key look will like the gray/black combo, while riders who want a little more flash will like the red/black and blue/white color options. The iridescent blue choice manages to be both understated and bold, thanks to the metallic blue hits that really set off the camo graphic. Moose Racing knows it’s important to see what’s ahead, whether that’s on the trail or on the track, which is why the F.I. Agroid helmet features an extra-large eye port. The excellent field of vision is enhanced by the friction hinge visor, which can be easily adjusted to exactly the right angle to keep the sun out of a rider’s eyes. The other notable design touch on the front of the helmet is the removable nose guard, which provides a barrier between roost and a rider’s face. Riding is usually hot work, but the F.I. Agroid helmet has steady airflow through the EPS liner thanks to nine intake vents and three exhaust ports. The liner and cheek pads are constructed from a moisture-wicking fabric to keep things even more cool and dry. It goes without saying that when the liner and pads have been put to the test in terms of perspiration, they can be removed and washed.

MOOSE RACING
The new F.I. Agroid Camo helmet looks great, and performs even better. It is available in an eye-catching red/black color combo.
Of course, every off-road helmet needs a good set of goggles to go with it, and the F.I. Agroid Camo is no exception. Moose Racing has several goggle styles available, including the XCR Pro Stars and the XCR Galaxy designs.
The XCR Pro Stars and the XCR Galaxy goggles are both available in four different color combinations.
Like the F.I. Agroid helmet, the XCR Pro Stars and XCR Galaxy goggles feature a large eye port so riders can get maximum field of vision. The polycarbonate lens is optically pure, so things won’t look distorted. A scratchresistant, anti-fog coating further works to keep the view nice and clear. But, just in case, each goggle comes with an additional clear lens for an easy swap.
For riders who need clear vision in rainy or muddy conditions, Moose Racing has the XCR Goggle Roll-Off System. This setup is available alone or complete with a set of goggles. Canisters are pre-installed on the lens, allowing the rider to pull a roll of 45mm roll-off film from one side to the other. The film is coated for scratch and fog resistance.
By combining a flexible polyurethane frame with a fleece-backed multi-density foam, the XCR Pro Stars and XCR Galaxy goggles are both comfortable and durable. The combination of materials, along with an outrigger system, also create a firm but breathable seal against the rider’s face, sealing out dirt and helping with moisture management. Vents in the frame further help cycle heat and perspiration out of the goggles.
A removable mud flap can be used to provide a seal at the top of the film, helping prevent water and mud from sliding down between the lens and the film. The lens itself has an anti-stick bump grid to help make rolling the film a smooth process. ■

hether your customers are sand dune rippers, woods riders or they prefer the vast terrain of the desert, some added power never hurts when it comes to today’s popular side-by-side models. Trinity Racing has been designing and manufacturing performance products for off-road machines since 1978, and continue to bring to market a range of new go-fast parts. When it came time to expand beyond the ATV market, Trinity decided to set its sights on the booming UTV business, and boy was that a smart decision! Now Trinity Racing focuses solely on the UTV market, building a big lineup of parts and accessories for today’s performance UTVs. Trinity Racing products stand out for a few reasons. The first being that they are made right in the USA at the company’s headquarters in Huntington Beach, California. It’s here that Trinity exhaust systems are hand TIG welded and bent on mandrel benders. This not only makes them tough, but also attractive. Mufflers are extruded out of aluminum and welded in house. The second reason they stand out is the signature design. Trinity Stage 5 exhaust systems utilize brushed stainless steel header pipes, mated to a beautiful Stage 5 muffler

The special fiberglass packing is the reason Trinity Racing exhaust systems sound so good. They are not too loud, and not too quiet, just a nice deep rumble that lets your customers know that not only do their cars look good, they also sound great! Trinity offers a variety of exhaust systems for just about any performance UTV. From Can-Am to Honda and Polaris to Yamaha, the company has the pipes for increased power. Best of all, each system is a simple bolt-on part that is easily installed thanks to quality instructions and video tutorials. ith three rounds and six races completed in the MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship, there is a battle royale shaping up. As of press time, the top three riders are separated by just 13 points after rounds at Circuit of The Americas, Road Atlanta and VIRginia International Raceway. And the battle for the title chase at this point is international in scope with Italian Danilo Petrucci ahead of South African Mathew Scholtz by just four points, 104-100, and American Jake Gagne third, 13 points adrift of Petrucci. For the first time since the Doug Polen/Eraldo Ferracci era, a Ducati leads the Superbike standings (Petrucci) with Yamahas second and third (Scholtz/Gagne). There’s a third and fourth manufacturer in the mix as well with BMW fifth (Hector Barbera) and Suzuki sixth (Jake Lewis) as the championship is shaping up to be one of the best-ever. The races have been won by Petrucci and his Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC Panigale V4 R and Gagne and his Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha Racing YZF-R1. Petrucci won the first three races with a sweep of the two at COTA and the first race at Road Atlanta with Gagne also winning three – race two at Road Atlanta and both races at VIR. TIRES
Spectator Sport
From Fan to Freestyle Pro for Sean Hadley Sean can most often be found on his 2003 or 2013 Kawasaki 636, which are both equipped with Avon Spirit ST tires. “I have never questioned or felt nervous performing anything on those tires,” Sean says. “They grip extremely well. They’re also a great drift tire. I’ve been able to depend on those tires for everything I need to do.”
When looking for a tire that offers great traction and the ability to drift when needed, pro stunter Sean “Sets” Hadley turns to Avon’s Spirit ST tires, which are equally at home on the highway and in the show ring.
It’s rare, Sean adds, to find a tire capable of having both good grip and good drifting characteristics, but the Spirit ST tires manage to do it. Avon designed the tires to be their ultra-high-performance hypersport touring tire. Rather than touring highways and roads, though, Sean is mostly touring competition and show rings as well as video shoots. Making videos has become a big part of Sean’s life in the last few years, and to him, it’s more than just riding a bike in front of a camera. It’s art.
“Expressing myself through art is something I really enjoy, and riding has become that,” Sean says. He adds that creating online content gives him “the ability to express myself how I want to. To create something from nothing and to really do something that will last forever. I really enjoy the creative process.” Sean enjoys creating so much that he also builds bikes. Even each of his stunt bikes is a unique piece of art, with different paint schemes and other touches to make each one its own showpiece. And, of course, each piece of motorcycle art is supported by those Avon Spirit ST tires.
The Avon Spirit ST is an ultra-high-performance hypersport touring tire.
I
t’s a lot of fun to watch freestyle competitions, but for Sean “Sets” Hadley, being a spectator wasn’t enough. After attending a few competitions in Lake Havasu and watching from the sidelines, Sean started stunt riding himself. These days – a decade into his career – his daughter Jade, 5. is the one who recently stopped spectating and started riding. She’ll probably be an Avon Tyres brand ambassador someday, just like her dad.

Jade has started riding with her dad. Sean will do slow burnouts and other simple tricks that create some real father-daughter bonding. Jade even has her own custom helmet, which is outfitted with a headset so she and Sean can talk when they’re riding together. When Sean was coming up in the freestyle community, he looked up to two other Avon Tyres brand ambassadors, Nick Apex and Ernie Vigil. We’re pretty sure we know who Jade is looking up to as her biggest influence and inspiration. Find Sean’s latest videos on Instagram at Sean_Sets or on Facebook at SeanSetsHadley. ■

Complete Valvetrain Kits Cylinder-Head Refresh in a Box
Kibblewhite complete cylinder-head service kits include everything needed to completely rebuild and refresh the cylinder heads on a variety of popular two- and four-wheeled vehicles.
H
igh revs and high hours take a toll on an engine, especially the cylinder head. Valve faces recede, valve seats get pounded flat, springs fatigue, and valve guides and seals wear. To keep the engines in off-road bikes, ATVs and UTVs running their best, Kibblewhite Performance Machining Inc. (KMPI) is pleased to provide complete cylinder-head service kits. These model-specific packages include everything needed to completely rebuild and refresh the cylinder heads on a variety of popular two- and four-wheeled vehicles. Kits include lightweight beehive or dual valve springs, titanium valve-spring retainers, steel base washers, valvestem seals, standard-size intake and exhaust valves, and standard-size valve guides. They also include a complete top-end gasket kit with a base gasket, head gasket, exhaust gaskets, and all necessary O-rings and washers. It’s great to get everything in one box, but these aren’t just generic parts. Valvetrain components are Kibblewhite’s bread and butter, and have been for more than 80 years. Each part in these cylinder-head service kits is optimized for performance and durability. Kits include new Black Diamond or White Diamond valves, depending on the application. Black Diamond valves are CNC-machined from one-piece forgings of EV8 stainless steel, and their signature black appearance is the result of a proprietary multi-stage finishing process that results in reduced friction and superior resistance to corrosion and wear. White Diamond valves are CNC-machined from

EV8 alloy or Inconel-751, then electroplated with a hardchrome finish for optimal durability. Supporting the valves are either C630 or C674 bronzealloy valve guides. These materials are tough and wear resistant, with excellent thermal characteristics. Bronze alloys allow for tighter clearances compared to other materials, creating better valve and seat sealing as well as superior oil control. To further keep oil where it belongs, KPMI valve seals are made with Viton, which can withstand higher temperatures than other seal materials. The springs in KPMI’s kits are engineered for each specific application using proprietary spring design, simulation and analysis software. To ensure maximum spring life, springs are heat treated, shot peened and X-rayed at regular intervals. Spring seats and retainers can often be reused, but that’s not the KPMI way. To ensure peak performance and reliability, cylinder-head kits come with new steel spring seats and lightweight titanium retainers that reduce reciprocating mass, which helps an engine rev up quicker. Finally, kits are supplied with premium Cometic gaskets. Whether your techs and customers are using these kits to refresh a worn-out head or to address factory recommended service, they will appreciate having every part, gasket and O-ring needed to complete the job. ■

urly Brand is making it easy for garage builders to customize their Honda Rebel 1100s with a wide variety of parts and accessories. From slammed choppers to lifted trackers and everything in between, Burly Brand has the parts to build the bike your customers want.
Replace the Rebel 1100’s stock components with Burly Brand’s range of Slash Cut parts, including the rear brake reservoir cover and the front sprocket cover.
SLASH CUT STYLE
Whether it’s the plain contoured side panels, ho-hum chain guard, forgettable front-sprocket cover or rearbrake reservoir cover, Burly Brand’s Slash Cut parts are an easy way to spice up the big Rebel.
PARTS & ACCESSORIES
Bolt-On Style
Burly Slammer Shocks
These products are easy bolt-on mods designed to replace the stock parts with angular aluminum panels that feature Burly’s signature slash-cut windows for an aggressive appearance. Riders can pick and choose parts or replace everything as a set for a cohesive look, and the textured black-powdercoat finish looks great on any color bike.
STANCE DREAMS
Stock ride height not doing it for your customers? Burly Brand can lift or lower their Rebels to give it a slammed look or jack it up for better cornering clearance. Burly offers a progressive-rate fork spring kit that can drop the front end 1 or 2 inches, all without removing the forks from the bike. Progressively wound springs deliver a compliant ride yet resist bottoming, so they’re a great solution to reducing ride height without ruining the ride quality. Burly’s Slammer Shocks are a great compliment to the fork kit and will put the bike down in the weeds for that sleek, low look. These 10½-inch shocks are 1½ inches shorter than stock and offer rate-sensitive damping and five-way adjustable spring preload, too. At the opposite end of the spectrum are the Stiletto Shocks. These 13-inch units will raise the rear of the bike for better cornering clearance and that sporty tracker look. Better yet, the Stilettos have high-performance dampers and dual-rate springs to deal with all kinds of road surfaces.
LIGHTS AND LEVERS
The Rebel’s stock taillight and license-plate arrangement leave a lot to be desired, which is why Burly has two options for improvement. The Slash Cut Turn Signal and License Plate Kit replaces the bulky stock tail light with compact LED tail/brake/turn lights and relocates the license-plate mount to bring it in tighter to the rear fender.
The Rebel’s stock taillight and license-plate arrangement leave a lot to be desired, which is why Burly’s turn signal and plate kit is such a great upgrade.
Another option is Slash Cut Vertical Tail Light and License Plate Kit, which moves the whole assembly to the left side of the swingarm. Burly Brand’s edgy Slash Cut style extends to the rearbrake lever as well as the shift lever. The steel lever arms feature machined grooves that match the aesthetic of Burly’s other parts as well as slick pivot bushings for smooth operation. Both levers are powdercoated black and finished with billet-aluminum toe pegs. ■

WINCH PRODUCTS
Secure Connection More Confident Winching
Factor 55 and its trio of winch line shackle mounts are new to Parts Unlimited. The ProLink XTV, FlatLink XTV and UltraHook XTV are all designed and machined in the USA. The “XTV” designation means that these are all engineered specifically for powersports vehicles, making them ideal for winches on both ATVs and UTVs. The Factor 55 shackle mounts install easily to a winch system. All a customer has to do is remove an internal snap ring and pin, insert the winch rope eye, then reinsert the pin and snap. That’s it. Once installed, the shackle mounts fit snugly against the fairlead surface without scratching thanks to integrated rubber pads. The shackle mounts can be used with steel or synthetic winch ropes of up to 5/16-inch in diameter. Rope eyes are retained with a titanium double-shear pin and internal snap ring for an extra dose of security. Certainly, there’s no reason to forego a little style with the practicality – each shackle mount is available in a range of limited-edition colors. The ProLink XTV is based on Factor 55’s original Closed System Winching shackle mount. It will accommodate half-inch and 5/8-inch shackles and soft shackles of up to 7/16-inch. The FlatLink XTV has a narrow profile, which allows it to fold neatly into the fairlead when not in use. Thanks to its smaller size, it also allows for a precision approach angle. Factor 55 offers up a range of shackle mounts in a variety of colors, including the ProLink XTV.
A
winch is a smart accessory for an off-road powersports vehicle, and a Factor 55 shackle mount is a smart accessory for a winch. By replacing a traditional winch hook with a closed, secure shackle mount, riders get an upgraded winching setup that can deftly handle shifting loads or slack. Each shackle mount enables a winch setup to do what the team at Factor 55 calls Closed System Winching. The system is straightforward – each of the lightweight shackle mounts is made of closed-link hardware. That means when a shackle is attached, it stays exactly where it’s supposed to, even during moments of slack. That way, winching can be done securely and confidently, every time.

Factor 55 designed the UltraHook XTV to have all the functionality of a hook, but with the added security of Closed System Winching. This shackle mount was actually created for off-road racers, who need to be able to winch as quickly as possible to stay competitive. The UltraHook XTV has a closed system shackle mount hole machined into the body of the hook. A latch pin in the hook’s body locks the safety latch in place for a quick but secure setup. In addition to its unique shackle mounts, Factor 55 has several other products available through Parts Unlimited, too. One of those is the RRP XTV, a rope retention pulley that makes a lightweight, compact alternative to traditional snatch block and pulley setups. When used with a synthetic rope and a soft shackle, the RRP XTV can be used to increase pulling power and to

Factor 55 is headquartered in Boise, Idaho. The designers come from varied backgrounds, including aerospace, defense and semiconductor experience, but they have one thing in common, a love of powersports and off-road riding. Combined with a drive for precision engineering, relentless testing and quality American manufacturing, Factor 55 is able to give ATV and UTV customers products that exceed expectations.
FACTOR 55
Another way to extend the service life of synthetic rope is to add a Factor 55 XTV Hawse fairlead with 6-inch mounting bolt spacing. Featuring an extra-thick CNCmachined aluminum bar, this fairlead is far stronger than usual, and the thicker design offers a larger radius for synthetic rope to slide against. The result is less wear and tear on the rope.
Each Factor 55 product is designed inhouse using the latest 3D CAD software. Once a product has been designed, it’s time to test. That includes getting detailed measurements in destructive tests to know exactly what each product can handle. Customers can ride easy knowing their Factor 55 winching accessories can get the job done right when the time comes. ■

redirect the winch line. During moments of slack, built-in rubber fingers prevent the winch rope from escaping the pulley groove. At the same time, the friction surface has been treated with Teflon to ensure a smooth surface that dissipates heat efficiently. Factor 55’s rope guard is designed for hardcore off-road customers. It provides synthetic rope protection, just like the name implies. All exposed synthetic rope surfaces are positioned behind the rope guard and fairlead, which protects the rope from impact and abrasion damage as well as harmful UV light. The rope guard is made from billet aluminum that has been clear coated for maximum corrosion resistance.

Shifting Gears
Precision Shifting Mechanisms for UTVs XDR Off-Road’s Magnum Grip gated shifters are designed to reduce the chance of unwanted gear shifts for many popular UTV models.
E
scaping the day-to-day, getting outdoors and hitting the open trail is something many powersports customers find solace in. Throw a UTV and a little adrenaline in the mix and you have an equation that produces ear-to-ear grins. Today’s UTVs are highly capable machines, but unexpected challenges can present themselves, and your customers should have the controls to help them be prepared. XDR Off-Road set out to improve function and precision of UTV gear shifting controls with the company’s threetiered lineup of gated shifters. Available for many popular
UTV models, Magnum Grip gated shifters were designed to reduce the chances of unwanted gear shifts, perhaps from an accidental arm bump, or even chassis flex. Requiring a trigger pull to change gears, these shifters create positive locking and unlocking in and out of gears. For those who like to push the limits, XDR’s Magnum Grip Hill Killer shifters eliminate stock reverse lock out functionality, allowing for a quick shift from forward to reverse. This helps drivers get the front end back on the ground quickly in hill climb situations when things start heading the wrong direction. Magnum Grip Dual Gate shifters offer a complete gearshifting package. Equipped with both a standard and a Hill Killer shift gate pattern, these shifters provide precision shifting functionality for any terrain, and most importantly, peace of mind. With CNC-machined billet construction, anodized finish and a limited lifetime warranty, your customers will be shifting gears for years to come. ■

ATV and UTV Gear for Summer Riding Of course, a roof is great for both keeping out of the sun and staying dry. Moose Utility Division has a wide selection of hard and soft tops for UTVs, ranging from model-specific fitments to universal roof styles.
Moose Utility Division has a variety of windshields and roofs for UTV models, all designed to keep drivers away from the off-road elements.
The Universal two-piece roof is a hard, molded polyethylene treated with UV stabilizers so it will stand up to the sun’s rays. There are water run-off areas for those rainy rides, and there is a molded cargo tray for extra storage space.
S
ummer riding means lots of great days and good weather, at least most of the time. Late summer brings hot weather and unpredictable thunderstorms, which means ATV and UTV riders need a way to keep themselves and their gear cool and dry. Moose Utility Division has a variety of windshields and roofs for UTVs, and for ATV riders who can’t stash things under a roof, there are plenty of storage options for keeping gear safely stowed. When it comes to UTV windshields, Moose Utility Division offers full and half designs, as well as one that combines the best of both worlds: a full folding deluxe windshield. When the weather is nice, the full folding deluxe windshield can be folded down to act as a half windshield, allowing plenty of airflow. When those summer rainstorms crop up, the windshield can be unfolded to give full protection from the elements. To make the windshield even more weatherproof, the hinged section that allows the top part of the windshield to fold is designed so that when everything is closed up, there is no gap that might let water in.
Some UTV riders want a roof option that is easier to take on and off, whether they are in the garage or on the trail. Moose Utility Division has black vinyl roof caps for those riders. Lightweight and easy to store, the vinyl roofs mount easily to a roll cage via hook-andloop closures and buckled straps. Some designs also have an integrated rear panel for an extra layer of protection from the elements.
PARTS & ACCESSORIES
Sunshine and Storms
ATV riders are more exposed to the weather, but that doesn’t mean their luggage should be. Gear can be stashed in one of the many Moose Utility Division ATV trunks so they stay nice and snug, no matter how bad the weather gets. Moose Utility Division has small cargo options as well as larger designs like the Diplomat and Diplomat II rear trunks, which have an integrated seat and armrests. There are also designs made for the front rack of an ATV, like the Forester front trunk. Of course, it’s not always about keeping gear dry. Sometimes, it’s about keeping things at the right temperature – the Rack Cooler Bag can be used to keep food and drinks nice and cold. ■

A New Way to Secure Clutch Hubs
W
hether it’s replacing a worn and notched clutch basket or removing the clutch assembly so you can split the cases, getting that highly torqued clutch-hub nut off is nearly impossible without the right tools. For decades now, Motion Pro has had an effective clutch-holding tool with its adjustable, locking steel pliers. Now there’s a follow-up to that classic device that’s more versatile and robust – Motion Pro’s new Heavy-Duty Clutch Holding Tool. This new clutch holder is designed to securely grasp the clutch hub on most motorcycles and ATVs, including the round-spline systems used on KTMs and Husqvarnas. That’s thanks to reversible blades that feature both square and round profiles. Due to its versatile design, the Heavy-Duty Clutch Holding Tool also serves to remove the lock ring on UTV fuel cells, so your techs and customers can access the fuel pump. In fact, anything that the blades can get a purchase on throughout their 75mm to 120mm of range can be held firmly as you loosen or tighten the associated fasteners.
Motion Pro’s new Heavy-Duty Clutch Holding Tool is designed to help make tricky clutch work easier for shop techs and DIY mechanics.
The Heavy-Duty title isn’t for nothing. This new tool has a burly aircraft-grade billet aluminum body and precisionmachined stainless-steel blades. A billet-aluminum clamp knob allows for fast, easy and secure adjustment, while a long, knurled handle gives you the leverage you need to tackle high-torque fasteners. ■

Smarter and More Powerful New Lithium Battery Charger
S
ince its introduction in 2012, the OptiMate Lithium LFP 4s5A (model TM291) has been the company’s most popular powersport charger for 12.8V / 13.2V Lithium (LiFePO4 / LFP / LiFe) batteries. Now it is being replaced with an even smarter and powerful version, the OptiMate Lithium LFP 4s6A.
The new model retains the advanced and same unique battery saving and charging features, including automatically saving a battery from as low as 0.5 Volts, and continuous testing of battery health as it safely recovers the dead-flat battery. It also has the same smart Ampmatic charge control that regulates charge rate to match the size and condition of the battery – smaller batteries get less, bigger batteries get more!
The new OptiMate Lithium LFP 4s6A battery charger features a host of new functions designed for peak lithium battery maintenance.
The revamped charger adds those great features with new functions, including the following pushbutton-activated modes: 1. BMS reset for advanced batteries with built-in deep discharge protection 2. Zero volt save for a battery that was run flat in a vehicle 3. TUNE mode
The third feature provides stable power (13.6V) to the battery when the ignition system is on, but the engine is not running. This allows uninterrupted adjustment of a motorcycle model’s user settings (ride modes, suspension, engine power, Bluetooth pairing), or electrical troubleshooting, engine diagnostics and ECU software updating. Lithium batteries deliver better starting performance, but still have less Amp-hour capacity than the equivalent lead-acid battery. They will run down faster in the vehicle if not receiving charge from the vehicle’s system. The new OptiMate Lithium 4s 6 Amp guarantees that battery will remain strong and healthy in any situation – during service, long-term storage or home use. ■

Cruising in Comfort Heat Control for UTVs
Design Engineering Inc. offers a lineup of Heat Control Kits for a range of UTV models, all designed to reduce uncomfortable heat transfer for drivers and passengers.
M
odern day UTVs have opened a new realm of possibilities for both work and recreation, offering increasingly more capabilities and bigger engines. However, with bigger engines comes more heat and more sound generated. Whether they’re behind the wheel or riding passenger, your UTV and ATV customers want a comfortable and fun ride when they’re out in the dirt. Design Engineering, Inc. (DEI) has applied its extensive experience in powersports
heat and noise control to the world of UTVs with Heat Control Kits, aiming to reduce uncomfortable distractions for riders and drivers. Available for various popular late model machines, such as the Polaris RZR 900 and 1000, Heat Control Kits from DEI utilize their proprietary heat reflection material, reducing drivetrain heat transfer to passengers. DEI analyzed critical areas prone to the most heat resulting in kits for specific areas like behind the seat and under the center console, as well as kits combining both. Installation is made easy on either the service dealer or the customer, supplied with precision cut pieces designed specifically for the model. They are easily secured with adhesive backing. The engine heat, noise and vibration reduction are not limited to just RZR customers. DEI’s Heat Control Kits cover popular models from Arctic Cat, Can-Am and Honda, all resulting in a more comfortable ride and enjoyable experience for all passengers involved. ■

drive chains.
otorcycle enthusiasts who equip their bikes with Regina Chain’s new High-Performance Endurance (HPE) roller/link chains might be seeing the end of greasy, messy motorcycle
Regina’s new HPE chain is actually an upgrade of the company’s successful and popular Z-Ring chain. What’s the major difference? The new HPE product doesn’t require periodic lubrication that’s associated with all other roller/ link chains. The difference is found in a coating known as Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon (ta-C) – among the most advanced Diamond Like Carbon coatings, a special class of coatings are exceptionally durable and slick – that’s applied to the surface of the HPE chain’s bushings and rollers. Here’s how it works: The ta-C coating reduces energy dissipation, while increasing efficiency in secondary transmission by combining the treated surface’s high degree of hardness with its low coefficient of friction. The end result means the motorcycle owner no longer has to apply chain lubricant to the chain’s rollers. Moreover, Regina

Forged Performance Precision Pistons for Off-Road
S
ometimes, the best way to get something done right is to do it yourself. That’s how Wössner became popular for its high-performance forged pistons, connecting rods and other engine components for off-road motorcycles, ATVs and UTVs. The company started as an importer and distributor of pistons, but it wasn’t long before Wössner started its own in-house production to ensure quality, precision and performance in every piece.
After going through the design process at the headquarters in Germany, the pistons are brought to life at Wössner’s forging facility in Italy. After forging, the pistons are sent to Wössner headquarters for processing and finishing. Wössner designs and manufactures all of its highperformance forged pistons, connecting rods and other engine components in-house.
Wössner first started producing its premium forged pistons in the 1990s, and since that time, the German company has experienced explosive growth. More recently, Wössner moved into a new headquarters in Weil am Rhein. Featuring state-of-the-art technology and a lot more space, the new facility has about tripled the company’s capacity. Parts Unlimited Ad_2020.pdf 1 5/19/2020production 6:43:16 PM
Through precise measuring and manufacturing, Wössner pistons have the tightest piston-wall clearance possible, resulting in an engine that runs quieter and more efficiently. Strength and durability are also built into the design, with features like double-bridged forging on the four-stroke pistons. Each forged piston kit comes with all the parts required for installation, including the piston, ring, wrist pin and pin locks. Standard and oversize pistons are available for most models, and 4-stroke applications are available with high compression ratios. ■
