6 PARTS MAGAZINE ★ SEPTEMBER 2022 by Don Emde Publisher / Editor-in-Chief EMDE REPORT ATV/UTV Issue

Despite the huge popularity of the ATV/UTV segment of the market, we haven’t forgotten about the two-wheel side in this issue. You’ll find lots of other stories featuring top selling motorcycle brands, including THOR, Moose Racing, ICON and more. We also included some racing news and a story about a recent charity fundraiser in the name of the late-Kurt Caselli, a top Parts Unlimited off-road racer back in his days. ■ Ride Safe!

T his is our annual ATV/UTV issue and its chock full of ads and stories of the leaders in the four-wheel off-road aftermarket. Check it all out starting on page 19.

What an amazing history the ATV/UTV segment of the industry has. I can remember back in the early-1970s when the three-wheel Honda ATCs hit the market. Three-wheel ATVs later became four-wheel ATVs, and to this day remain an important part of the business for those who still prefer riding with machines that have handlebars instead of steering wheels. Along the way, UTVs morphed from non-sporty industrial machines used on farms and work sites into serious recreational vehicles for the desert, woods and other off-road riding areas. Yamaha gets the credit for starting the movement into UTVs with its Rhino around 2005. Polaris then jumped in with the 800cc RZR, followed by bigger and faster models every year. Today, Turbo RZRs and Can-Am UTVs rule the sand and trails wherever they go.

Scorchers

A s summer temperatures soar, so do the off-road athletes of Moose Racing and THOR. It’s been a white-hot summer for Canadian hard enduro star Trystan Hart in particular. The FMF KTM THOR rider wrapped up two flawless championships, going undefeated in both the AMA West Extreme Off-Road Championship and the U.S. Hard Enduro Championship. Hart then headed over seas to the infamous Erzbergrodeo in Austria to take on the Iron Giant alongside the world’s best. Hart managed to put his Factory KTM on the podium in third, marking the first time ever a Canadian has reached the Erzberg podium. “That took a lot out of me,” said Hart of his Erzberg effort.

In the XC2 250 Pro class, Ryder Lafferty made it a double victory for the Moose-backed Coastal Racing GASGAS team as he rode to a class win and fifth overall on the day. The Mason-Dixon GNCC also saw another Moose Racing athlete claim victory as Rockstar Husqvarna rider Tayla Jones won the WXC class. Jones is currently the points leader with four more races left in the season.

MOOSE RACING AND THOR RIDERS KEEP IT PINNED

Another first recently came for Jordan Ashburn, who tri umphed at the Snowshoe GNCC, marking a career-first for the Moose Racing athlete. Ashburn managed to nab the victory in very wet conditions, besting Ricky Russell in second.

On the THOR side of off-road racing, FMF KTM’s Josh Toth is also lighting up the scene, capturing the U.S. Sprint En duro Championship. A second-place finish in Harleywood, Virginia was all Toth needed to clinch the title. Toth captured another big win in Virginia, this one coming weeks later at the one-off Sprint Enduro World Champion ship. The event also served as an ISDE Qualifier and warm-up for the 2022 International Six Days Enduro in France. Toth’s win comes as a statement that the THOR rider plans to lead the U.S. World Trophy Team to victory alongside AmPro

“I was exhausted coming out of it. I wasn’t crazy tired, but I was cramping so bad in my legs. Getting on the podium is a huge result for me. I really wanted to put Canada on the map for Hard Enduro, so hopefully this does it.”

Another marked triumph came for Moose Racing-backed rider Ricky Russell. It’s been a long battle back from a shoulder in jury for the Coastal Racing GASGAS rider, but Russell finally put a check in the column at the Mason-Dixon GNCC at High Point Raceway; the win marked his first victory since Snowshoe in 2017. “It’s about time, that’s all I can say,” said Russell.

The two-time Mission SuperTwins presented by S&S Cycle champion appeared to be in peak form at the round in midJuly. The 22nd premier-class win of Bauman’s career carried some extra significance, coming on an evening in which the paddock earlier paid tribute to Production Twins rider Ryan Varnes by donning his number #68 for a memorial lap led by the late rider’s family. Varnes, 24, passed away after an on-track incident at the previous round at Weedsport Speedway in New York.

“Honestly, it’s an emotional day for the sport of flat track,” Bauman said. “I can’t thank everyone who participates in flat track enough right now. I can’t believe how strong the Varnes family is. All the fans were supporting us during our lap of honor. I don’t normally do burnouts, I don’t know if I’ve ever done one, but I just felt like we needed to do it. “Off-road racing has been an integral part of the THOR brand since our inception in the 1960s,” said THOR brand manager Josh Shorter. “As we progress through the current landscape of varied racing series and terrains, and the products that these riders need to compete at the highest levels, our partnership with the FMF KTM Factory Racing Team is para mount. It’s tough work to count up all of the achievements that riders like Taylor Robert, Dante Oliveira, Josh Toth, Ben Kelley and Trystan Hart have recorded over the years. One thing is for certain; whether it’s GNCC, National Enduro, Hard Enduro, Hare & Hound, Hare Scrambles, EnduroCross or WORCS, these guys are giving it their all week in and week out to earn and retain those number-one plates.”

Deschenes, in particular, was ready to fight for another win against title rival Jaycee Jones and rookie star Martens. All the ladies were able to grid up for the Main, with Deschenes relegated to the third row after a DNF in the Semi. It was an uphill battle for the BTR veteran, especially against Jones, who won at Port Royal in 2021, and was scorching fast all day. Jones’ quickest lap time in the Main was a 27.9, putting her just outside qualifying times for the Produc tion Twins class. In the main, Jones led from flag to flag, with 18-year-old Martens relentless in her pursuit. Martens would collect another podium finish ahead of Deschenes, who worked her way up from the third row to third place overall. As of press time, the BTR women were head to Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, South Dakota in August for the fourth full-grid round of the season. ■

As a founding partner of the Kurt Caselli Foundation, FMF Racing is a big part of the organization’s events. The company offered up a nice selection of Caselli-themed merchandise at the MotoDoffo event.

The Doffo Winery features an impressive collection of vintage motorcycles, and is always a great venue for moto-related events. The Barrel Room showcased all the items up for the silent auction and raffle.

A large turn-out of racers, industry notables, motor cyclists, fans and enthusiasts turned out to enjoy an evening of camaraderie, entertainment, food and beverages while aiding a great cause at the 8th annual Kurt Caselli Foundation MotoDoffo fundraiser.

The Caselli MotoDoffo fundraiser in June honored the memory of the legendary Kurt Caselli, one of the greatest off-road riders America has ever produced. A three-time AMA Hare & Hound National Champion and three-time WORCS Champion, Kurt won several stages of the Dakar Rally. Kurt also won multiple ISDE Gold Medals and was Captain of the USA ISDE Trophy Team. He tragically died in a racing accident while leading the 2013 Baja 1000 in Mexico. After his passing, a group of his friends, family members and industry notables formed the Kurt Caselli Foundation to honor his legacy. The Foundation’s mission is to protect and support the lives of off-road riders. As in the past, the foundation held the fundraiser at the picturesque Doffo Winery in the rolling hills of Temecula, California’s wine country. The family-owned Doffo Winery is not just another winery, but also houses an awesome vintage motorcycle museum with machines of multiple countries, disciplines, and conditions lining the walls and scattered around the grounds. That coupled with good food and drinks made it an ideal setting for the Caselli fundraiser.

The Board of directors gather together to celebrate another successful event.

The afternoon/evening event featured something for ev eryone. The first 300 adult event tickets purchased online received a free commemorative KC66 wine glass. There was live music, lawn games, a silent auction and raffles, plus plenty of food, wine, and beer for purchase. The choices even included limited-edition Kurt Caselli wine and beer. At tendees enjoyed all this while strolling around, admiring the more than 150 rare, vintage, unique motorcycles on display, which included several of Kurt’s racing machines, including his National Hare & Hound KTM Championship winning race bike and his KTM Rally bike. To help raise funds for the foundation, FMF sponsored a booth with Kurt Caselli themed merchandise like hats, Tshirts, stickers, and even socks. A raffle and a silent auction also helped raise funds for the good works that the founda tion does for the off-road community. With its focus on supporting off-road riders, the foundation’s goals are to encourage, develop and standardize safety pre cautions that will help minimize risk outside of the rider’s control. This includes advocating for the use of safety equip ment and policies to increase protections for riders. The funds raised by the event go toward helping race series around the country with everything needed to improve and increase safety, including flags, course marking materials and safety vehicles. The foundation also provides sweep/ medic vests for safety personnel that are packed with a PCI two-way radios. These radios allow race/medic personnel to respond faster in medical emergencies.

Scot Harden (left) and Selvaraj Narayana (right) are regular attendees at Caselli Foundation events. Both were KTM executives and good friends of Kurt when he was a KTM rider.

The foundation also encourages former racers to further their education and reach career goals for themselves and their families, and provides scholarships for these endeav ors. The Kurt Caselli Scholarship awards gifts of $2,500 to current or former racers who are currently enrolled in institutions of higher learning or will be enrolling in the upcoming term. The scholarship goes to applicants who embody perseverance, integrity, generosity, commitment, humility, and professionalism – all the same character traits that Kurt Caselli exemplified on and off the motorcycle.

ATV Market Trends

The ATV market can be split between Adult and Youthsized models. Whereas in 2000 the ratio between Adult and Youth models was approximately 95.5 percent Adult to 4.5 percent Youth, those ratios changed to 90 per cent/10 percent in 2010 and 84.5 percent/15.5 percent in 2020, according to PPM.

All of those years of sales success for ATVs and UTVs means there are plenty of vehicles out there in need of replacement parts and accessory upgrades, and riders needing apparel.

In that same year, with people eager for a break from Covid-related lockdowns, the ATV market bumped up more than 32 percent over 2019, according to Minneapo lis-based research firm Power Products Marketing (PPM).

20 PARTS MAGAZINE ★ SEPTEMBER 2022 ATV/UTV SPECIAL SECTION I

The research firm also splits ATVs into four types - Recre ational/Utility 2WD, Recreational/Utility 4WD, Sport 2WD and Sport 4WD. In 2000, Recreational/Utility 2WD models were respon sible for 26 percent of the market while Recreational/ Utility 4WD models held a 50 percent share, Sport 2WD models accounted for 22 percent and Sport 4WD models held only 2 percent market share. By 2010, Recreational/Utility 2WD sales shrunk to only 7.5 percent of the market, Recreational/Utility 4WD bal looned to a 69 percent share, Sport 2WD held 21 percent and Sport 4WD remained relatively stable at 2.5 percent market share. For 2020, those market shares remained largely un changed, with Recreational/Utility 2WD at 7.5 percent, Recreational/Utility 4WD at 69.5 percent, Sport 2WD at 20.5 percent and Sport 4WD at 2.5 percent.

Let’s take a brief look at some of the trends taking place right now in the ATV and UTV market.

As for major brands, Polaris Industries led the market in 2021, followed by Honda, Yamaha, Can-Am, Kawasaki, Arctic Cat, Suzuki and KYMCO. Of notable interest is PPM’s database documentation of so-called “Non-Traditional Brands,” which show additional strong sales by brands such as Kayo USA, CF Moto, Tao Motor, Coolster, and Cole man Powersports.

For those customers, there is Parts Unlimited and its array of catalogs, including the ATV & UTV and Helmet & Apparel catalogs. Both of those books, along with the tires, tools and equipment in the Tire & Service, have your customers covered whether they’re ripping across the dunes in a turbo-charged side-by-side, or putting in a day’s work on their stalwart ATV.

n the eight years between 2012 and 2020, the UTV market saw sales skyrocket by an astonishing 100plus percent growth, a figure that peaked with the pandemic-fueled buying blitz in 2020 as consumers scrambled for some outdoor recreation.

Finally, UTV sales results in 2021 show how the market has continued to expand, led by UCV models (40 percent), SSV (18 percent), PUV (15.5 percent) and RUV (14 percent). The North American ATV/UTV market makes up the larg est segment of the global marketplace for such product. Many OEMs continue to forecast improved supply in the coming 12 months.

MARKET OVERVIEW

As for brands, Polaris Industries continued to lead the market in 2021, distantly followed by Can-Am, Kawasaki, Deere and Honda. The remaining top-10 purveyors of UTVs included Kubota, Hisun, Yamaha, CF Moto, and E-Z-Go.

PPM also splits the UTV market into various categories depending on a vehicle’s specifications, sportiness and utility capabilities. These categories include Pure Util ity Vehicles (PUV) like the Kawasaki Mule Pro DX/DXT, Electric Utility Vehicles (EUVs) like the Polaris Ranger EV, Utility Crossover Vehicles (UCV) like the Can-Am Defender series, Recreational Utility Vehicles (RUV) like the Yamaha Wolverine R-Spec, Sport Recreational Vehicles (SRV) like the Hisun Strike 900 and Super Sport Vehicles (SSV) like the Honda Talon 1000R. In 2000, when the UTV market was defined largely by Commercial vehicles, PUV models held 80.4 percent mar ket share compared to EUV models with a 19.6 percent share of the market. By 2010, once various other types of UTV had been created, PUV models accounted for 40.5 percent of the market, UCV held a 24.5 percent share, SRV held 14 per cent, RUV held 10 percent, EUV dropped to 8 percent and the fledgling high-performance SSV niche had a mere 0.02 percent of the market.

21SEPTEMBER 2022 ★ PARTS MAGAZINE

UTV Market Trends As previously mentioned, PPM splits the UTV market be tween Consumer and Commercial applications. Whereas in 2000 the ratio between Consumer and Commercial was approximately 40/60, respectively, there has been a significant shift to Consumer models accounting for the majority of units moved. For 2021, PPM found Consumer applications likely accounted for 89 percent of sales while Commercial applications looked to be responsible for 11 percent of the total.

Each Gates G-Force Redline belt is packed with features designed to make it long-lasting and high performing.

B ack in the 1990s, Gates set out to develop a highperformance CVT belt that could stand up to the demands of recreational vehicles. It wasn’t until 2011 that the first G-Force CVT belt would hit the market, the result of years of hard work, research and testing. It was milestone for a company that’s been around for more than 110 years. Two years after the successful launch of the G-Force belt, the G-Force C12 belt followed. While the original belt had aramid cords, the C12 featured carbon fiber tensile cords. In 2019, Gates introduced the G-Force Redline belt, which was designed with a high-tech Ethylene Elastomer compound and provides both greater heat resistance and longer life. The G-Force Redline belt is the top-tier belt in the lineup, designed for ATVs and UTVs with engine displacements of at least 800cc. It is suitable for stock setups as well as heavily modified vehicles. Thanks in large part to the revolutionary Ethylene Elastomer compound, the Redline belt can withstand extreme friction, severe compressive force and the excessive heat that results from heavy loads and aggressive riding. In other words, it’s an ideal CVT belt for racers and riders who like to push the limits of what’s possible.

The G-Force C12 belt gives engines up to 799cc a perfor mance boost thanks to the carbon tensile cord, which results in minimal stretch and outstanding strength.

After some rigorous testing and R&D, the Trinity Racing design team reported that it saw an increase of 10-horse power to the tires with just the installation of this new slip-on system. With the addition of one of Trinity’s ECU tuners, the crew reported a 15-horsepower increase. Pretty impressive numbers for simply adding a slip-on exhaust and fuel management device. ■

26 PARTS MAGAZINE ★ SEPTEMBER 2022 W hen it comes to designing exhausts, it is im portant that they not only look and sound great, but also perform. Trinity Racing spent countless hours perfecting its new slip-on for the Polaris RZR Pro R so that it checks off all of the boxes customers want and expect.

It all starts with the new stainless-steel muffler bodies. Trinity decided that the company’s standard aluminum muffler bodies wouldn’t cut it for the RZR Pro R – those high-performance vehicles definitely needed something a little more stout!

Trinity Racing’s new slip-on muffler for the Polaris RZR Pro R not only looks great and sounds even better, it also offers those high-performance machines a nice boost in power.

As an added touch, small Trinity Racing badges are tackwelded onto the new cans.

With this in mind, the experienced team at Trinity Racing took that same Stage 5 muffler design and hand built new stainless-steel cans in-house. These new mufflers start out as a flat sheet of stainless-steel that is then laser cut. After they are cut, they are placed in a form die and pressed into shape on a press brake. After the two separate shells are formed into shape, they are then placed into a fixture, where they are welded to gether using a laser welder. This new welding technology allows for a consistent and effective TIG-style weld every time. When it comes to stainless-steel exhausts, this is the look your customers are after. Trinity Racing designed these new mufflers so that they feature a 2½-inch stainless-steel perforated baffle that is then wrapped in a pillow of high-temperature fiberglass. Much like in classic hot rods, this fiberglass packing is what gives Trinity Racing exhaust systems that deep, throaty rumble.

To finish the mufflers off, Trinity Racing designed a newstyle billet aluminum turn-out tip – a nice touch that gives the exhausts that signature go-fast look. As with every thing else on this system, the tips are also made in-house at Trinity’s headquarters in Huntington Beach, California.

» These new exhausts are available through Parts Unlimited. Contact your rep for more information and check out Trinity’s full lineup of products in the ATV & UTV catalog.

TRINITYRACING.COM 714-988-0339@TRINITY_RACING PRO R EXHAUSTS ARE HERE! NEXT LEVEL UTV PERFORMANCE After countless hours Dyno testing, the new RZR Pro R exhaust is ready for purchase. This slip-on is an all-new design, utilizing hand made stainless steel muffler bodies with 2.5-inch baffles. This system provides huge gains to horsepower, sound and the overall look of your Pro R.

EXW chains also feature special sideplates that are resis tant to thermal cracking, which can result from debris or components impinging the chain’s movement. The impingement causes the chain to quickly heat up and cool down. Over a period of time this thermal exposure can reduce the strength of the chain and/or cause chain failure. It is vitally important to check the bike after a crash to make sure no debris is in contact with the chain.

The KM3 tire is designed for both sport and multi-purpose UTVs, but it is no surprise that the tire takes its design cues from the toughest conditions and competition to be found. The KM3 UTV tire is adapted from technology developed for the Baja 1000-winning Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 and Baja T/A KR2 tires. BFGoodrich has conquered the world’s most challenging off-road races, and the dura bility and adaptability necessary for those events finds its way into production tires like the KM3 UTV tire. With all of the technology and development that has gone into the KM3 tire, the result is an extremely capable, durable UTV tire that is designed to handle well across all Trainingterrains.

Designed to Conquer A UTV Tire for the Toughest Terrains

FGoodrich has more than doubled the number of sizes available for its popular Mud-Terrain T/A KM3 UTV tire, making it easier than ever for UTV riders to get outstanding handling and traction in even the toughest, most slippery riding environments.

» Have a chat with your Parts rep about the BFGoodrich KM3 UTV tire and all of the sizes available. You can find them in the Tire & Service catalog.

Previously, the KM3 UTV tire was only available in five different sizes. There are now an additional seven sizes for a total of 12. The word “mud” is in the name of the tire because it ab solutely excels at traversing mud and loose soil, but the KM3 tire is so much more than just a mud tire. It is also an excellent climbing tire, making it a versatile option in virtually any kind of riding environment. When it’s time to conquer muddy terrain, BFGoodrich equipped the KM3 UTV tire with both grip and selfcleaning features. The Terrain-Attack tread design has massive tread blocks that are made to deliver incredible grip, no matter how slick the surface or what the angle of approach is. Traction-Armor sidewalls feature a notched shoulder design that boosts traction in mud and soft soil. Meanwhile, mud-phobic bars help release compacted mud to ensure continued traction. Soft soil and mud are no problem for the KM3 UTV tire, and the same can be said of rock and other slick surfaces.

In addition to tread compounds designed for great grip, stable tread blocks provide a solid foundation when navigating through rocky conditions. When the terrain requires airing down, the Linear Flex Zone goes to work by enhancing the tire’s ability to envelop objects. Riding through such harsh conditions means a tire has to be tough. The KM3 tire has steel-belted radial construction for increased durability. On the sidewalls, BFGoodrich’s Advanced Deflection Design helps prevent hazards from snagging and splitting the sidewall. The tough sidewall rubber is extended to add even more ruggedness.

A construction contractor by trade, and powers ports enthusiast by passion, Steve Torbenson was tired of not having a good solution for a protective face mask he could wear all day. So, following his entrepreneurial spirit, Steve invented one, and the first RZ Mask was born.

The M2 and M2.5 Mesh mask models from RZ Mask are two of the most ideal for powersports and cross-functional work use. The M2 has been developed for comfort and breathabil ity in mild to hot working conditions, utilizing nylon mesh construction. A quick release, hook-and-loop strap and nose clip make fitment a breeze, while RZ’s proprietary V1 exhala tion valves reduce fogging without sacrificing effectiveness.

RZ Mask’s M2 Mesh mask was designed for comfort and breathability in hot conditions. It features a quick-release hook-and-loop strap for easy fitment.

The M2.5 Mesh mask from RZ Mask utilizes dual adjustable elastic straps, as well as dual-layer F1 Active Carbon filters for capturing microscopic particles and reducing fumes and odors.

RZ Masks’ unique products set themselves apart by being held to a filtration standard of blocking 99.9 percent of particulates, which is almost five percent more than those blocked by a standard N95 mask. They’re designed and constructed with durability in mind so your customers can breathe without worry day-in and day-out, whether they’re on the job site or hitting the dirt for an adrenalinefueled weekend.

The M2.5 features the same material construction and exhalation valve technology as the M2, but uses dual adjustable elastic straps for customers who prefer a more mobile fitment. Each of these masks include two F1 Active Carbon filters. These dual layer filters are responsible for all the heavy lifting with the first layer capturing micro scopic particles and the second layer reducing harmful fumes and odors. With a combination of durable construction, replaceable filters and a broad application use, RZ Masks can easily become a staple for just about any dealer, serving both their personnel and their dynamic customer base. ■

Wössner pistons are designed in the US and at the com pany’s headquarters in Germany. Wössner engineers have more than 100 years of collective experience in designing performance pistons, and that expertise shows in details that make a big difference, like having the tightest pistonwall clearance possible. After design, the pistons are forged from aerospace-grade 4032 and 2618 aluminum alloy at the Wössner forging facility in Italy. Each forging is heat-treated to T6 hardness to ensure top strength and durability. From there, the pistons are machined at Wössner’s state-of-the-art facility in Germany. Each forged piston kit comes with all the parts required for installation, including the piston, ring, wrist pin and retaining clips. Piston applications are available for all popular models, with many of them featuring options for graded size, bore diameter and compression ratio. ■

R acers know that to go fast it’s also important to, at times, go slow. And one way to slow down is to equip high-performing ATVs and UTVs with powerful brakes. That’s why many professional ATV and UTV racers choose DP brake pads. Consider that during the 2021 racing season DP-sponsored riders dominat ed all the pro GNCC ATV classes, taking first place in ATV Pro XC1, Pro-Am XC2, 4x4 Pro, WXC Women, plus many more classes. That racing success is likely to continue because many ATV Pro riders have equipped their machines with DP pads for 2022. Besides slowing and stopping those heavy four-wheelers quickly, racers and other ATV/UTV enthusiasts who use DP Brakes’ sintered pads report extended pad life over stock brake pads. It’s not uncommon to achieve two to three times the wear over stock brake pads. DP’s most popular ATV/UTV pads? DP’s Standard Sintered pads. As with all DP pads, the Standard Sintered pads slip right into an ATV or UTV’s OEM brake calipers, so installation is quick and easy. DP brake pads are optional upgrade items for Can-Am’s ATV and UTV rigs, making them especially popular for recreational use. Even though your customers may not seek first-place trophies, they certainly understand the importance of slowing and whoa’ing their personal four-wheelers when exploring the great outback. That’s why they can choose DP pads. ■

Gagne was almost perfect at WeatherTech Raceway La guna Seca, the Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha Racing rider winning both Medallia Superbike races in dominating fashion. The only thing he didn’t do was earn his sixth straight pole position as it was Westby Racing’s Mathew Scholtz who snagged pole. Gagne qualified third, which may have been a boon as the third rider on the front row at Laguna Seca lines up on the inside of the track. From that starting position, Gagne grabbed the holeshot in both races and was never headed.

A lthough there may have been some who were worried about the way Jake Gagne’s MotoAmerica Medallia Su perbike title defense began in 2022, you couldn’t count Jake Gagne among them. He was, as always, cool, calm and collected.

While Gagne established his dominance in the Medallia Superbike class at Laguna so too did Harley-Davidson in the Mission King of the Baggers Championship. Although Tyler O’Hara and his Mis sion Foods/S&S Cycle/Indian Challenger Team still leads the championship, it’s only by a single point as the Harleys are on a charge with a complete lockout of the podium at Laguna. The race was won by Harley Screamin’ Eagle’s Kyle Wyman, the defending class champion taking the lead early on and pulling away to ultimately win by a tick over three seconds. The man behind him was his teammate and brother, Travis Wyman, who was a comfortable few seconds ahead of yet another Harley – this one ridden to third by Vance & Hines Harley’s James Rispoli. In fourth place came the first of the Indians with O’Hara crossing the line ahead of his teammate Jeremy McWilliams but over six seconds adrift of Kyle Wyman. His championship points lead held at just one point over the Wyman brothers, who were tied for second in the title chase. McWilliams was fourth and just nine points behind his teammate.

Italian Danilo Petrucci, who led the title chase going into the Laguna round, was on the podium in both races on his War horse HSBK Racing Ducati NYC Panigale V4 R, but it wasn’t enough to hold Gagne at bay, and the Californian who now calls Colorado home, was the championship leader by three points at the time this issue went to press. ICON exploded onto the scene in 2002 with edgy designs and a “do you dare me?” attitude that has continued to define the brand. Designed for performance riders who prefer the street to the track, ICON is street gear made to do its job without looking like it’s working all that hard. Back when ICON Design Director Kurt Walter was growing up, that street gear segment for performance riders didn’t exist, and sportbikes were still a relatively new thing. In the mid-1980s, a 15-year-old Kurt fell in love with those first-generation sportbikes. Kurt had to wait a while to get his own sportbike. He joined the Navy, saved up his money, and bought his first sportbike at 19. A Navy guy on a sportbike in the 1980s? If you’re picturing Top Gun, you’re not far off the mark – Kurt says it was a lot like that, minus the volleyball. Kurt received a scholarship for college through the Navy, and he got his degree in industrial and graphic design at the University of Michigan. After landing work with shoe companies and, later, a job at THOR, Kurt still saw a big need for gear that was designed specifically for sportbike riders on the street, prompting him to focus on that market.

Achieving that level of performance meant mak ing improvements over the previous Geomax tire, the MX12. Every facet of the tire was revamped. Take a close look at the tread blocks, and you’ll see that they have a shape that resembles a stylized shovel. Called Reinforced Scoop Technology (RST), this design actually does act like a shovel. The edge of the block imme diately penetrates soft terrain, then the block burrows in further to scoop the terrain as it rotates. The result is improved contact area and traction. unlop has expanded its family of Geomax offroad tires with the introduction of the Geomax MX14. Available in eight sizes to fit everything from mini bikes to big bikes, this new rear tire is designed for success in soft terrain. The MX14 is a rear tire only, and it is intended to be paired with an MX33 or MX3S up front. While the Geomax MX14 is made to excel in extreme sand and mud conditions, it is also a tire riders can rely on in the most important aspects of a race. The tire offers increased traction on starts, straights and when exiting corners. The Geomax MX14 also has excellent braking performance, slide control and damping. In other words, it excels in every scenario around a sandy or muddy course. In addition to its in-house testing team, Dunlop worked extensively with AMA Pro racers, Dunlop’s European MXGP World Championship racing team, and the Team Dunlop Elite amateur racers to de velop the Geomax MX14. After all, the tire was designed to deliver a performance advantage to racers, so working with racers to develop it was a way to ensure the Geomax MX14 worked exactly as Prototypesintended.oftheGeomax MX14 were used by Dunlop racers throughout the 2021 season, and as the wins and holeshots added up, it became clear that the Geomax MX14 was going to set a new bar for rear tire performance.

The Geomax MX14 compound has been enhanced with High-Resilience Rubber Compound (H-RRC) technology.

What this means is that the compound formula helps im prove control and traction since the knobs have less flex. Inside the Geomax MX14, an additional ply helps control sidewall flex when load is applied. By optimizing sidewall behavior, damping properties are improved. ■

Braking gets a performance boost thanks to Flexible Fin Technology (FFT). By adding a small fin to the crown and middle blocks, the tire’s footprint increases under braking to provide additional control. Braking force begins to take effect earlier, and the entire braking process is smoother.

Prime pants in the 2023 line continue the theme of advanced racewear technology with THOR’s proprietary nylon In-Motion fabric serving as the main construction for the ultra-lightweight, pre-curved chassis design that follows the natural anatomy of the body. This fabric was developed to simultaneously provide both mobility and durability. THOR’s designers strategically placed vented mesh panels and laser cut holes for optimized cooling characteristics, plus added premium grade, full grain leather inner knee panels for resilient longevity.

Much like tuning the equipment the rider is riding, the equipment the rider is wearing must be tailored as well to allow them to ride at the astonishing levels they do. THOR MX is among the originators of understanding that riding gear is not just something to cover up with while riding, it’s a tool that’s critical to the rider’s performance, it’s racewear.

RIDING APPAREL Factory Racewear

THOR’s Prime racewear line has been proudly equipping professional riders for years, many of whom have worn the THOR logo proudly up on the podium when accepting their number one title plate. In fact, THOR was front-andcenter in May this year when Christian Craig earned his first career Supercross Championship.

THOR is already looking ahead to chasing down that next Championship, as the company’s 2023 Prime line is now available. A cumulation of thousands of test hours with top-level athletes and implementing feedback to achieve the next level in racewear, THOR has elevated both the construction and flexibility of the Prime collection.

The Next Generation of Riding Gear T esting, tweaking, tuning, perfecting – this is an ongoing process happening behind the scenes of every factory race team on the Supercross and Pro Motocross circuit. Each turn of a T-handle and every lap spun helps riders, mechanics and the entire crew collect and analyze data so they can try to improve and gain that next 1 percent.

The 2023 THOR Prime jerseys are designed with a hybrid fit featuring set-in style tailored sleeves. High-quality polyester and spandex blended material is used in the sleeves configured in a four-way stretch integration with laser perforation. These features work together to provide unmatched movability while retaining optimal air flow and durability. Additionally, moisture wicking material is used throughout with a minimal number of flat-stitched seams for maximized comfort.

The radial hinge adds supportive structure while promot ing safe mobility for the rider. A secure and comfortable fit is provided by the adjustable straps, mesh liners for airflow, and the low profile tox box design.

Tasked with the critical responsibilities of shifting gears, stopping, gripping, balance and more, the feet and lower legs are very vulnerable when riding. THOR’s Radial Boots were designed with function and protection in mind, of fering a modern boot that exceeds all the requirements of riding at any level.

THOR didn’t stop the racewear evolution at jerseys and pants. Sight is one of the most critical functions riders rely on to remain focused and connected with the track, which is why THOR’s Activate goggles are designed to deliver premium optical accuracy.

For those than want to express themselves a bit more, Prime 2023 is even offered in an artful craft-inspired look.

Protection within the Radial Boot is handled by precurved, injection molded components throughout and a medial abrasion plate with integrated shift protection.

The Activate frames have molded intake ports to improve ventilation and reduce fogging, and sweat moisture management is handled by triple-layer face foam and a debossed face fleece design. Both the goggle and lens are tested and certified to strict safety standards, including European Standard EN 1938:2010. Six different color combinations featuring complemen tary mirrored lens colors can easily give riders the factory look they love. Add some tear offs onto the triple post system and your customers will be ready for anything the track or trail throws their way.

Radial Boots are designed to deliver this functional pro tection for many rides to come with a replaceable outsole and fully synthetic calf overlays, maximizing durability. As an added option, all these features of the Radial Boots are packaged in six different color choices, sure to satisfy just about any look your customers are after. ■

The 2023 Prime kits are available in seven different designs and colorways. CUSTOM COCKPIT Mirrors and grips are great candidates for replacement, since they can add style and an improved riding experi ence for your customers. The Slash Cut Grips are one of many Slash Cut-styled products Burly has on offer, and the vibration-reducing grips feature a cool laser-engraved logo. Beneath that, a machined-aluminum sleeve slides onto the bar and throttle tube for a secure fit.

RAISING THE BAR With Burly’s 12-inch Ape Hanger handlebars, your custom ers can get that ape hanger look without attracting too much unwanted attention. This bar is bent from powdercoated steel that’s 7/8-inch diameter in the grip area to accept stock controls, but swells to 1-inch throughout the rest of the bend for a beefier look.

Burly’s Hot Rod and Ra dar mirrors are another tasty option for riders looking to modify their bikes’ cockpits. The Hot Rods rock a ’50s style with round glass atop a billet-aluminum stem that’s anodized black for durability. The Radars have teardrop-shaped glass for a little better lateral view, and both sets of mirrors are direct bolt-on to Honda controls. Burly has a classic-looking sissy bar with a pad for the Rebel, so passengers are more comfortable and secure. This all-steel sissy bar is powder coated black, and the fender mounts make it easy to install and remove.

When you think of off-road gear, socks are prob ably not the first thing that comes to mind. What goes under the boots can be just as important as the boots themselves. Moose Racing has several options to make sure a rider’s feet are as cool and comfortable as the rest of their body. The Sahara Knee Brace Socks have a mid-thigh length to provide a layer between a rider’s legs and their knee braces. The longer length doesn’t mean more bulk, though. The leg panels Moose

The Sahara jersey is made of a lightweight polyester mesh that is fully vented to provide maximum airflow. The athletic fit makes sure the air moves through the jersey, but doesn’t make it flap in the wind; the slimmer fit is a performance design without unnecessary bulk. The jersey is available in sizes Small through 3XL. The Sahara pants also feature ventilated poly ester mesh in strategic areas, providing plenty of airflow while still giving the pants the added durability they need. The inner knees are one of the areas that always takes a beating, which is why the pants have full-grain leather inner knee panels. The pants are designed to be comfortable from the first wear, with pre-curved legs that fit just right while in a riding position, a three-point waist adjustment system and stretch panels to provide flex in key areas. The Sahara pants come in sizes 28 to 42.

The 2023 Sahara Racewear lineup has all of the great features one expects from Moose Racing’s off-road gear along with fresh new colorways and graphics. In addition to pants and jerseys, Moose Racing also has a range of socks to make sure feet stay nice and comfortable on those hot days, too. Moose Racing works extensively with its sponsored riders to develop gear, and the Sahara Racewear is no exception. Pro riders test the gear and give feedback to make sure it’s as cool and comfortable as possible.

he summer months are prime riding season. The weather is good, the kids are out of school and people are taking vacation days to head out to the track or the trail. Off-road riding can be hot work on even the coolest of days, though, which means riding in the summer can be miserable without the right gear.

The sublimated graphics on the 2023 Sahara Racewear lineup come in three different designs and a total of five colorways. Among those is a purple and green design that has a distinct retro vibe for riders who want to evoke the 1990s.

For years, Moose Racing has been designing ventilated off-road gear to make sure the wrong gear doesn’t ruin what should be a great day of riding. Whatever kind of heat a rider has to face, whether it’s triple-digit temps in the desert or the muggy swamps of the South, Moose Racing’s Sahara Racewear can help keep things cool.

MOOSE RACING are thin and ventilated. By using quick-drying Coolmax polyester, the socks are even more efficient at moisture and heat control.

Moose Racing now has Agroid Knee Brace Socks available, too. The moisture-wicking polyester leg panels are com bined with a mesh panel on the back of the leg to provide plenty of cooling. Feet and legs stay dry and comfortable, even during those hard rides on hot days.

69SEPTEMBER 2022 ★ PARTS MAGAZINE

For riders who aren’t looking for thigh-high coverage, the Sahara Sock is also available in a standard length. Like its longer counterpart, this sock features Coolmax polyester so sweat gets wicked away from the skin to keep things cooler and drier. Ventilation also helps keep things more comfortable inside the boots. The sole features nylon re inforcements to extend durability in high-abrasion areas. Up top, a nonslip cuff and stretch bands keep the sock securely in place over the calf without feeling binding.

Of course, Moose Racing also has socks for cooler weather. As riders get into fall, they might want to swap out the Sahara Socks for the XCR Socks. They also feature quick-drying Coolmax polyester, but it is combined with Merino wool to control both moisture and temperature. The high-loft terry knit cushioning is comfortable, and the nylon reinforcements in wear zones make sure they last a long time. ■

What’s missing? Lubricating the chain’s rollers, that’s what. But don’t confuse the HPE for a selflubricating chain. Instead, it’s a roller chain that needs no lubricating, thanks to a special coating known as Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon, referred to within the chemical engineering community as ‘ta-C.’ Tetrahedral Amorphous Carbon is among the most advanced Diamond Like Carbon coatings – a special class of coatings that are exceptionally durable and slick – available for such applications. The coating is ap plied by Regina to the HPE chain’s bushings and rollers, and it’s good to go for the life of the chain. That life span, according to Regina Chain engineers in Italy, surpasses that of the company’s conventional, and highly durable, re-lubricated Z-Ring chain.

PRODUCT SHOWCASE high performance endurance THE FIRST MAINTENANCE FREE CHAIN PRESENTS THE NEW PROUDLY MADE IN ITALY SINCE 1919 DRIVE CHAINS

Regina Chain’s new HPE drive chain needs no maintenance or lubrication thanks to a high-techspecializedcoating.

As a new product to the market, the HPE chain is currently available only in 525 sizing. Fortunately for enthusiasts, 525 is the most popular dimension for mid- and large-dis placement motorcycles. Ten pre-measured chain lengths are currently available, ranging from 104 to 128 links, depending on the specified motorcycle application. ■

Ready to Roll Maintenance-Free Drive Chains

In addition, the ta-C coating adds strength to rollers’ surfac es by reducing friction. Less friction means less drag which translates to more power transferred to the rear wheel.

U sing Regina Chain’s new HPE (High Perfor mance Endurance) roller/link chain is easy as one-two-three. One, install the chain. Two, adjust its tension. Three, fire up the bike and ride away.
