Celebrating 30 Years

The Premier issue of Parts Magazine was published in March of 1994. That means that with this issue we are beginning our 30th year with Volume 30. Throughout 2023 we will be looking back thru our years of past issues to commemorate many of the events and people who have made our long run possible.

I’ve told the story many times that in 1993, I made a proposal to Fred Fox that my publishing company could produce a magazine for Parts Unlimited that would be 100% about the products that they distribute, the events they are involved with, and it would be sent to all of their dealers. I kept the proposal simple on one sheet of paper and Fred agreed to give it a try.

Nothing on that original proposal has ever changed, except that Fred requested along the way that we also produce magazines for Drag Specialties and Parts Europe. We now publish 16 magazine issues a year for LeMans Corporation.

I searched back through my files and found a few examples of people who were with us from the start and continue today. The photo of Fred Fox holding our premier issue includes me and Dain Gingerelli. Dain continues to this day as one of our feature writers. The other photos are of Larry Mills of DP Brakes (formerly Dunlopad) and Mike Buckley from Dunlop Tires. Both of their products were seen in that first issue, and they remain valued customers today.

In addition to Fred Fox and all of the brands at LeMans Corporation, a sincere thank you for their 30 years of business since that premier issue also go to everyone at Cobra USA, Metzeler Tires, Michelin Tires, RK Chain, SBS Brakes, Vance & Hines, and Yuasa Batteries. Let the celebration begin! ■

10TH ANNUAL KURT CASELLI FOUNDATION RIDE DAY Story and Photos by

The annual Kurt Caselli Ride Day is a fundraising event held in honor of the late off-road racing legend who tragically lost his life in a crash in 2013 while leading the Baja 1000, just a few miles from the finish.

As a testament and honor to his legacy, The Kurt Caselli Foundation (TKCF) has sponsored an annual Ride Day and fundraiser every December for the past decade. Parts Magazine had the opportunity to attend the 2022 Ride Day, which drew over 750 attendees at Fox Raceway in Pala, California. For its 10th anniversary, the event raised $76,750 for the Foundation’s work and its mission of “Protecting and Supporting the Lives of Off-Road Riders.”

For the 10th annual Ride Day, participants were able to enjoy many activities. They included a 3-mile off-road loop, open riding on the Main, Vet and Kids tracks, a parade lap to honor Kurt, USMCA Beginner Dirt Bike Skills classes, and a fun ProAm race called the Caselli Team Challenge. There was also a vendor row lined with 36 of the industry’s popular moto

brands. The Ride Day was well attended by some of the best off-road, Supercross and motocross racers out there, all of whom were there to have a good time and enjoy a day of riding in honor of Kurt. Between sponsors, vendors, and pro riders’ donations, there were over 40 raffle prizes and silent auction items, including a bike giveaway, which event attendees had the opportunity to win.

Nancy Caselli, Kurt’s mother and TKCF treasurer, awarded the Kurt Caselli Scholarship to seven recipients, each receiving $2,500 in funds applied directly to their school’s tuition. The Foundation started the scholarship program in 2015 and has awarded $132,500 in scholarship funds to 53 recipients thus far.

Nancy Caselli is also very proud of the scholarships the Foundation gives out to student racers. “You can see the real difference it can make to a person,” she said. “One thing that keeps me going after losing Kurt is that I ask myself, what would he want me to do, and that is make a difference in

people’s lives. Kurt was so humble, he’d chuckle at what we’ve done, but he’d be proud that the Foundation is helping offroad riders. We’re touched that he lives on in so many hearts of the racing community.” To learn more about the scholarship program go to www.kurtcaselli.com/scholarship.

The annual Pro-Am race, dubbed the Caselli Team Challenge, is always entertaining. Each year, pro and amateur riders are paired up randomly via a popsicle stick drawing for a fun racing experience. This year, the challenge returned to the Vet track where Kailub Russell and Cole Whitmer took the top honors and claimed the perpetual trophy.

Accounting for a large amount of the proceeds raised was the one-of-a-kind bike build, a 2022 KTM 500 XCF-W Baja race bike that Brad Baker of CTG Federal generously donated. The bike was a special project for Brad Baker and Quinn Cody’s private Baja race team that Factory KTM mechanics built with an unlimited budget. It cost over $30,000 and featured several unique factory parts and tricks not usually available to the public.

The winner of this giveaway bike was Michael Reed of Fruita, Colorado and he was called and notified about his new ride.

“The bike giveaway garnered over $66,000, which is awesome since it landed on the number 66, Kurt’s signature number,” said Lindsey Mashchak, director of operations for TKCF.

The Foundation was started after a group of Kurt’s family, friends and admirers held a memorial ride in Kurt’s honor. Donny Emler Jr., president of the Foundation, said that he, Nancy Caselli and Jon-Erik Burleson (with KTM at the time) wanted to do something to memorialize Kurt, something that would last and support the industry.

“We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from the industry, Kurt’s global fan base, and our sponsors,” said Donny Emler Jr., president of the Kurt Caselli Foundation.

“I’m excited to help keep his memory alive and to see this Foundation continue to help off-road riders. I’m so glad the ride day has been an annual event for 10 years and will go on for years to come.”

If you have yet to attend the Kurt Caselli Ride Day, do yourself a favor and put it on the calendar now. It’s always the first Saturday in December and is a fun event for the whole family. For this year, the tentative date is December 2, 2023. Proceeds raised help support safety initiatives and provide educational scholarship opportunities for off-road and motocross riders. ■

Louisville NVP JANUARY 21-22

As the world slowly returns to what is considered the new normal in this post-pandemic era, there’s one constant in the powersports world perfect for guiding the collective group back to full operating steam – the Parts Unlimited Spring NVP Product Expo.

After all, this is the show that signals the beginning of the new sales season and serves as the first look at all the parts, products, accessories and apparel jam-packed into those new Parts Unlimited catalogs. These are the very products driving customers into dealerships as they get ready to rip into 2023.

As such, of those attending the Spring NVP Product Expo in Louisville, Kentucky in January – the show’s first return to the Derby City since 2020 – there was a palpable joy among showgoers eager to get together again to kick off the spring riding season. And, as always, the NVP was as much a homecoming and reunion of friends and colleagues as it was a business opportunity. With all that going for it, the show was a huge success.

For two full days, dealers poured into the Kentucky International Convention Center to scour 140,000 square feet of exhibit space and meet with a myriad of vendors showcasing everything from the latest riding apparel and service equipment, to cutting-edge hot rod parts and tires of all types.

This season’s show also highlighted just how diverse that Parts Unlimited product lineup is, showcasing the company’s growing bicycle parts lineup – centered around the INTENSE Tazer MX eMTB range – and including such products as performance supplements and a big increase in helmet offerings.

Dealers should note that their Parts Unlimited sales reps also received two days of in-depth product education from 6D Helmets, Alpinestars, Arai, BS Battery, Dunlop, ICON, INTENSE Cycles, Kali Protectives, LeoVince, LIQUI MOLY, Moose Racing, Moose Utility Division, Muc-Off, S&S Cycle, THOR, Vance & Hines, and Z1R. Now is a good time to reach out to your rep and learn more about that great lineup of product vendors.

Saturday’s show ended with a dealer happy hour before the whole show moved over to the Sports & Social Club in the heart of Louisville’s 4th Street Live! district for the now-iconic LeMans Meet & Greet. Attendees enjoyed food, drinks, games, robust camaraderie and a variety of sports programming on the establishment’s more than 60 televisions.

With all signs pointing to ‘GO’ as the world’s economy reawakens, dealers can now set their sights on the return of the Fall NVP Product Expo, August 19-20, in Madison, Wisconsin at the Monona Terrace. Talk with your Parts Unlimited sale rep to get details about attending the show. ■

Spring into Racing

New-Generation 2023 Racewear

Whether real or implied, boundaries can limit experiences and hinder potential. When it comes to off-road riding, there are those who take it upon themselves to push past those boundaries and open doors to new adventures. This is a core belief on which THOR operates. THOR doesn’t just support this outlook, it designs, develops and produces rider equipment that enables powersports customers everywhere to break down their own boundaries.

Continuing THOR’s legacy are new racewear components in the Spring 2023 collection. With protection, functionality and performance from the inside-out, Sentinel LTD roost guards and Prime racewear are a championship-proven combination featuring THOR’s latest in lightweight, flexible, breathable technology.

The evolution of what have historically been known as chest protectors has led to branching out into products with a similar protection goal built into a slimmed down chassis, promoting improved rider mobility over traditional, bulky designs. Categorized as roost guards, THOR has used feedback from professional to hobbyist level riders to develop its Sentinel LTD line of torso protection.

The Sentinel LTD roost guard was designed with the rider in mind, deflecting rocks and roost so riders can stay in the thick of the battle without feeling the need to fall back. It features a low-profile, lightweight design made with press-fit, molded construction with panels covering both the front and back of the torso. The ventilated comfort liner system combined with abundantly placed

ventilation ports work together to deliver maximum cooling characteristics for the rider.

Sentinel LTD roost guards offer dynamic adjustability at the shoulders and waistline with elastic closures and a ratcheting buckle for a secure and tailored fit for each individual rider. Plus, removable shoulder pads add to the rider preference customization capabilities. Sentinel LTD roost guards are designed to be worn either under or over the jersey and come in four different colorways to fit the look riders are going for. These are available to fit a wide range of your customers.

32 PARTS MAGAZINE ★ MARCH 2023 PRODUCT SHOWCASE RIDING APPAREL
THOR’s Sentinel LTD roost guard is built for comfort and protection, and is available in four different colorways. THOR’s Sentinel LTD Race model roost guard

For the more serious racers lining up behind the gate, THOR expanded its roost guard line to include the Sentinel LTD Race model. This guard features many of the same high-quality construction characteristics as the standard Sentinel LTD, but swaps out the back panel for a press-fit, molded and moisture wicking Y-strap back connecting to an optimized, low-profile and lightweight front panel. The Sentinel LTD Race roost guard is available in black and white colorways.

A natural complement for any rider running a Sentinel LTD roost guard, THOR’s Prime racewear has been its flagship, premium motocross gear line since 2014, developed and proven with professional riders in the Supercross and Pro Motocross circuits. Through thousands of test hours and feedback from THOR’s elite athletes, the construction and flexibility of the Prime collection is elevated in the Spring 2023 offering.

Available in two different factory-level designs with two colorways each, the Prime Freeze and Prime Drive racewear sets of jerseys and pants will have riders looking and feeling at the top of their game. Prime jerseys deliver a custom-level fit and finish utilizing set-in style tailored sleeves constructed from a polyester/spandex blend with four-way stretch capabilities – this allows movement with riders’ arm motions instead of fighting them. Laser-cut perforation is used in strategic areas throughout Prime jerseys for maximum airflow and ventilation.

Moisture-wicking material through Prime jerseys helps keep riders dry in those long and grueling motos. Comfort overall is a priority of Prime jersey design, achieved through a combination of all its features, including minimal, flat-stitched seams and taped collar and cuffs.

Prime pants act as an extension of Prime jerseys, continuing the high-level fit and function to the lower body. Prime pants’ main construction utilizes THOR’s Nylon, In-Motion fabric, a material specifically designed and integrated to provide incredible mobility and durability. The mobility factor is accentuated by Prime pants’ pre-curved chassis design, meaning they are constructed to naturally follow the shape and movement of riders’ legs, before they even put them on.

The durability factor is accentuated with premium grade, full-grain leather inner knee pads, tasked with holding up to riders actively squeezing their machines while riding. Just like the jerseys, Prime pants help keep riders cool with laser-cut ventilation holes and strategically placed vented mesh panels. Precise fitment will not be a concern for riders with Prime pants either, offering adjustability through ratchet closure and side-cinch systems at the waist. ■

Rebellious Roots Slip-On

Exhaust for a Range of Honda Models

The Bagger segment of the touring motorcycle market is a unique one, appropriately referenced by the saddlebags they are commonly equipped with, and mostly locked-in with American V-Twins. While most Bagger riders tend to skew toward those bikes, what about those customers who are intrigued by Bagger style and functionality but don’t want to go the American V-Twin route?

This gap is what Honda came to fill in with the recently released Rebel 1100T. With generations of proven and well-established metric cruisers under its belt, Honda took its popular, parallel twin Rebel platform and injected some Bagger culture to achieve a metric touring motorcycle that’s inviting for just about any level of rider.

While its roots stem from sportbikes and more recently in V-Twin performance, Vance & Hines’ passion for powersports spreads far across the many models of machines enthusiasts choose to chase their thrill with, and the Rebel 1100T is no exception.

Given its new style as a cross-culture machine, the Vance & Hines crew was excited to get their hands on a Rebel 1100T and apply their well-balanced touch of grit, precision and American-made performance.

The result? The Rebel 1100T 1Hi-Output slipon exhaust from Vance & Hines. This exhaust delivers both iconic sound and performance when bolted-on to the Rebel 1100T, producing a satisfying roar when riders lay on the throttle and a smooth, deep rumble on those long highway runs.

This Hi-Output slip-on starts with a brawny, 2½-inch mid-pipe with an integrated heat shield for rider protection. The mid-pipe leads into a 4½-inch, stepped muffler capped off with a

and 3 pounds lighter than stock, this exhaust bumps up the cool factor yet another notch.

Continuing with the theme of small-but-mighty motorcycles, the popular Honda Grom and even the pocket-sized Navi are more two-wheeled machines that Vance & Hines couldn’t overlook. 1Slip-on exhausts for these mini warriors also utilize similar design and finish characteristics as the other Honda models for a package that delivers great sound and even better looks. And, as with each of these two-wheel Honda exhausts from Vance & Hines, 50-state emissions compliance leaves one less worry for your customers on the road.

One more addition to that Honda exhaust list from Vance & Hines adds a couple extra wheels into the picture. Twice as many, to be exact. As Honda’s answer to the blossoming sport UTV market, the Talon serves to benefit from some enhanced sound, performance and aesthetic from Vance & Hines. Dubbed the 2Mojave Eliminator Series, these cat-back exhaust systems feature a trick, dual-tip center exit design through a laser-cut rear guard to protect from the rigors of off-roading.

Dealers and customers alike will be excited to know that the Vance & Hines Hi-Output slip-on for the Rebel 1100T not only meets the SAE J2825 sound standard, but is also 50-state emissions compliant thanks to its cat-back fitment.

Your Rebel customers that took the leap to the Baggerinspired 1100T aren’t the only ones that can bolt-on that legendary Vance & Hines sound. 1Slip-on exhausts are also offered for the standard Rebel 1100 and the Rebel 500.

Each of these slip-ons feature an upsweep design, kicking the megaphone-style mufflers up and away from the ground in classic fashion. Matte black, high-temp finishes, billet end caps and logo badging are also present throughout these slip-ons, each delivering that Vance & Hines look and sound no matter the Rebel model.

As mentioned earlier, Vance & Hines loves all things powersports, which is why its exhaust system options don’t end at Rebel models for Honda customers. Much like Vance & Hines, Honda is a brand that’s always embraced its legacy in the world of powersports, which is where modern odes to classic traditions like the late-model Honda Monkey come from.

The novelty and overall cool factor is high with the Monkey, sparking up memories of the old-school days for many. Well, the Monkey deserves a 1Hi-Output slip-on, too. Constructed from 304 stainless steel for durability

Customers will appreciate simple installation, as these systems are designed to mount to the factory header. Heads will turn with the noticeably deeper exhaust note coming through the signature, billet end caps. Plus, the Mojave Eliminator Series is 49-state emissions compliant and includes spark arrestors, setting your customers up for success in their adventures. ■

Ready for Anything Waterproof Luggage for Unpredictable Journeys

Weather is unpredictable, which is one of the reasons Nelson-Rigg Hurricane line of 100 percent waterproof luggage is so popular. The collection keeps growing with the addition of three new Hurricane bags as well as the RiggStraps Kit to keep luggage securely tied down.

Nelson-Rigg’s Hurricane line is especially popular with dual-sport and Adventure riders because each piece is constructed from a heavy-duty, UVtreated PVC tarpaulin material, and every seam is electronically heat welded resulting in durable bags that are 100 percent waterproof. The Hurricane luggage collection includes innovative features like patented Rigg Straps, air purge valves and sturdy design so bags hold their shape when empty.

The three new Hurricane luggage pieces are the Dual-Sport Saddlebags, Adventure Tank Bag and RiggPack 5-liter Crash Bar/Tail Bag.

The Dual-Sport Saddlebags are a throw-over style, eliminating need for a mounting rack and specifically designed for dual-sport, enduro, sport and Adventure motorcycles. Each 14-liter bag has a roll-top closure with quick-release buckles to keep contents dry and dust-free.

The Adventure Tank Bag with 8 liters of storage can hold everything an Adventure rider needs for a day of riding, like gloves, goggles and GPS. A clear map pocket on top allows for easy navigation. This strap-mount bag also has an antislip base to ensure a snug fit without scratching the tank.

The RiggPack Crash Bar/Tail Bag is a versatile way to add an extra 5 liters of storage. It can mount just about anywhere, not only to crash bars or as a tail bag but to luggage racks, roll bars or added onto the Dual-Sport Saddlebags themselves. The bag mounts via adjustable, quick-release straps or hook-and-loop straps. It features MOLLE straps and, when used as a tail bag, a protective anti-slip pad attaches to the back.

The Hurricane collection includes nine designs, so riders can choose the right size and style for their ride or a mix for maximum carrying capacity. In addition to the three

new pieces, the line includes the Hurricane Saddlebags, Duffle Bags in both 25-liter and 40-liter sizes, Dual-Sport Tank Bag, 10-liter Roll Bag and 30L Backpack/Tail Pack. Like all Nelson-Rigg Luggage, the Hurricane collection comes with a Lifetime Warranty.

These pieces aren’t just for motorcycling. They can be mounted to an ATV or UTV, watercraft or snowmobile. Items like the backpack, roll bag and duffle bags are great for camping too. Nelson-Rigg’s motto of “For Wherever the Journey Takes You” is especially true of the Hurricane luggage collection.

The new Rigg Straps Kit includes two adjustable 60-inch Rigg Straps. With a maximum pull force of 100 pounds and a sturdy, aircraft-grade aluminum cam-hook buckle, Rigg Straps are ideal for tying down extra gear and luggage to bars, racks, frames, seats and more. ■

Off-Road Stinger Tires for a Competitive Edge

Off-road motorcycle and Adventure riders alike will find a fitting tire in the Pirelli Scorpion motorcycle tire family. This comprehensive line of off-road and dual-sport tires has a wide range of applications and performance characteristics, suiting everyone from top off-road competitors to Adventure riders.

The Pirelli Scorpion lineup includes the Scorpion MX tires, which are popular with racers in AMA Arenacross, Monster Energy Supercross, Pro Motocross and SuperMotocross. Meanwhile, the Scorpion XC tires are a top choice for trail and rally applications.

Pirelli’s motto, “We sell what we race, and we race what we sell,” is abundantly clear with both the Scorpion MX and XC tires. The same tires that top off-road teams use are the exact same tires available to customers through Parts Unlimited dealers.

The MX line has been constantly updated over the years to stay at the top of the podium in motocross competition, and the tires have earned 79 MX World Titles. Scorpion MX tires can be found on the bikes of teams like Phoenix Racing Honda, PRMX, Next Level Racing, MADD, Prado and Team Faith, amongst others.

Pirelli offers the Scorpion MX tire as the MX Soft, MX 32 Mid Soft, MX 32 Mid Hard and MX Extra X, so riders can choose the right tire for the terrain they will be facing. The Scorpion MX Extra X tire is designed for long-lasting performance across multiple terrains, deftly balancing performance and durability.

The Scorpion MX 32 Mid Soft is OE on the Honda CRF250R, and Phoenix Racing Honda’s Kyle Peters has won three consecutive Kicker AMA Arenacross Championships with that winning bike and tire combination.

The Scorpion XC range of tires can be found in paddocks throughout the NGPC, NHHA, WORCS, GNCC and District

37 series. Top teams like Factory Beta, Johnny Campbell Racing (JCR) and Phoenix Honda Racing count on the XC tires to get them to the finish line first. The Scorpion XC tire is available in both a Mid Hard and a Mid Soft version.

The Scorpion Rally is a tire designed for desert racing and rallies, and it comes in two options: Adventouring for off-road and on-road capability or Rally Racing for excellent handling even over sand dunes.

Adventure riders who want the best of both worlds—paved roads and no roads at all—can opt for the Scorpion Rally STR, which combines outstanding street performance with rally capabilities. The Scorpion Rally STR is OE on the Aprilia Tuareg 660, Ducati Desert X, Husqvarna Svartpilen and KTM 890 Adventure.

The Pirelli Scorpion line of tires also includes the Scorpion Trail II, which is a Sport-Touring tire that can handle dirt roads, giving riders more freedom when it comes to where they ride. This tire comes OE on the ZERO DSR/X, while the Scorpion Rally STR is a performance accessory option for that bike.

Dedicated trail riders will appreciate the Scorpion MT 90 A/T, which is designed for trail motorcycles but handles asphalt, too. ■

Off-Road Outfitters High-Performance Racewear

Moose Racing is getting off-road riders ready for the coming riding season with its Spring 2023 Agroid racewear. The original Agroid line of off-road pants and jerseys was launched in 2020, and it continues to be a popular choice among pro riders and enthusiasts alike.

The team at Moose Racing designed the Agroid line with competition in mind. This high-performance collection features lightweight, flexible materials, athletic styling and premium details that add both style and durability.

Ease of movement both on and off the bike is a big feature of Agroid racewear, giving racers the ability to move as much as necessary on the bike without any discomfort. The cut of the racewear as well as the flexible material adds to the freedom of movement, but the performancefit styling keeps things from being too big or bulky.

Agroid racewear is topped by sublimated graphics that won’t fade, no matter how many times the pieces get dirty and are thrown in the washing machine. As expected, the Spring 2023 Agroid racewear features all-new graphics and colorways for riders to choose from. The new graphic

style is available in four different colorways, and sizing ranges from S all the way up to 3XL.

One of the reasons Agroid racewear is such a great choice for racers is because it was designed with input from top professional off-road riders. Throughout the development process, the team at Moose Racing relied on the feedback from racers who field-tested the racewear. Their feedback helped Moose Racing make adjustments to suit the needs of the toughest off-road competitors.

Of course, that relationship with pro riders means race fans can see the Agroid racewear in action in racing series across the United States. Pro riders who will be wearing the Agroid pants and jerseys this season include Phoenix Racing Honda’s Cody Barnes, Mike Witkowski and Kyle Peters, as well as AmPro Yamaha’s Rachael Archer, Trail Jesters KTM Racing’s Korie Steede, Magna 1 Racing’s Jordan Ashburn and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Tayla Jones.

The Agroid jersey is made from a lightweight stretch polyester chassis topped with a custom stretch collar and non-restrictive stretch mini cuffs. All that stretch increases

the range of motion, allowing racers to move freely. The material is quick drying, and there are laser-cut ventilation holes. Together, those two features help keep racers cool in even the toughest, most competitive of riding situations.

In all, the Agroid jersey is a premium-level jersey packed with features that pro-level riders expect in their gear. At the same time, it is also a great choice for riders and racers of every level for those exact same reasons.

The athletic fit of the Agroid pant includes a pre-curved leg for an ergonomic riding position. The chassis begins with a lightweight durable stretch woven polyester that is topped with stretch ripstop polyester panels on the knees and seat. Full-grain leather knee panels provide an extra layer of abrasion resistance, while a stretch area in the knee allows the pant to fit over knee braces or guards while still providing a slim, streamlined fit.

Like the Agroid jersey, the Agroid pant includes laser-cut ventilation holes and non-fading, breathable sublimated graphics, so riders get the right blend of airflow and style. A three-point waist adjustment system allows a rider to fine-tune the fit, and an auto-locking YKK zipper tops off the list of perks.

The Agroid glove is the perfect complement to the Agroid jersey and pant combination. Like the rest of the line, the glove is designed for flexibility and comfort, giving riders a firm grip without any binding or bunching. The stretch polyester backhand and pre-curved finger design allow a rider’s hands to move freely, and the outseam finger construction keeps things smooth. The palm of the Agroid glove is made from Clarino for strength and abrasion resistance as well as improved feel and airflow.

Moose Racing offers a full line of off-road apparel. While the Agroid racewear line is the high-performance option ideal for extreme riding conditions, the M1 line is a great choice for everything from the racetrack to the trail. This all-around line is a durable option that suits a wide range of riding styles. When it’s especially hot out, Moose Racing’s Sahara gear is the way to go, since that line is designed for maximum ventilation to combat the hottest of riding days. Riders looking for entry-level gear that doesn’t sacrifice quality can explore the Qualifier line. ■

70 Years of Excellence

Arai Helmet Range Added to Parts Unlimited Lineup

Arai is a storied and well-respected helmet brand, and for good reason. For seven decades, the Arai family has produced high-quality helmets that many prize for their protection, style and comfort. Arai helmets are an aspirational brand for many riders and are now available through Parts Unlimited.

Arai Helmet is a third-generation, fam ily-owned Japanese company that specializes in high-quality motorcycle helmets. Its mission is simple and has remained unchanged since it was founded by Mr. Hirotake Arai in the 1950s – protection without compromise.

To this day, and for more than seven decades, Arai has been ac-

mets hadn’t yet become common. Hirotake’s experience making hard hats, and his own daredevil riding pushed him to design a hard-shelled helmet for his own use. Mr. Arai fashioned his first helmet in 1952, and 70 years later Mr. Arai’s son, Michio Arai, and his grandson Aki Arai, are still driven by the same passions.

Arai’s experience on the street and at the track have provided it with many valuable lessons. One such tenet is that a rounder, smoother shell is better able to divert impact energy by sliding across uneven surfaces and glancing off obstacles more easily. The result of that philosophy is the current Arai shell shape, similar to an egg – the strongest shape found in nature.

cumulating gains in protection, one by one. Each helmet is meticulously handmade with exclusive materials and technology and every shell is double-inspected before going on to paint, final inspection and finally shipping. That’s the Arai difference: quality and craftsmanship for the protection of motorcycle enthusiasts.

The Arai story began in Japan in the mid-1920s, when 21-year-old Hirotake Arai set up shop as a straw-hat maker. In the coming years, Hirotake utilized his hat-making skills to design and manufacture hard hats for construction workers. With business success came the ability to buy something Hirotake had long wanted – a Harley-Davidson – and he became impassioned with riding.

This was in the early 1950s, an era when motorcycles were booming in popularity, but safety equipment such as hel-

All Arai helmets incorporate an Egg-Shaped Form (ESF) that yields an incredibly strong and smooth shell. Arai shells are handmade, and are offered in numerous sizes per model to ensure the correct fit for riders. And, because no two heads are the same, Arai works with three unique interior shapes – Long Oval, Intermediate Oval and Round Oval – to more accurately match the contours of your customers’ heads.

These features and much more are present in helmets such as the street-focused Signet-X, race-inspired CorsairX, and adaptable XD4 Adventure riding helmet, which are now in stock. ■

THE ARAI DIFFERENCE

No matter how good a helmet is, the amount of energy that can be absorbed is inherently limited. Faced with an impact that exceeds that limit, Arai’s belief is that avoiding energy by Glancing Off is essential to keeping that energy away from the inside of the helmet.

Arai is still a small, family-owned company driven by the same mission through three generations – three generations of riders. We at Arai are motorcycle enthusiasts. We ride. We build each Arai helmet as if we’re creating it for one of our own – a brother, a father, a husband, a mother, a sister.

Arai’s mission has always been the protection and comfort of every person who chooses an Arai helmet. Our foundational principles of protection first, exceptional quality, and rider comfort have never been forgotten in over six decades of helmet design and manufacturing. This is Arai Helmet.

AMA SUPERCROSS PREVIEW 2023

RETURNING CHAMPS AND NEW TALENT

The New Year is here and along with the start of 2023 comes a new Monster Energy AMA Supercross season. There is also a new combined championship dubbed the SuperMotocross World Championship. Supercross and PRO Motocross have united to create the world’s first SuperMotocross World Championship. For this new series riders will earn points from the Supercross Series and from the National Motocross Series that will qualify them for the SuperMotocross Playoff rounds leading

to a World Championship Final. The final is scheduled to take place at the L.A. Coliseum in October where the 250cc and 450cc World SuperMotocross Champions will be crowned. Right now, the focus is on the 2023 Supercross Series where THOR/Parts Unlimited will be sponsoring a full complement of racers including some returning champions. So, here’s the list of talented hopefuls and returning champions riding for Parts Unlimited in the Supercross Series that you’ll see clad in THOR Racewear this season.

450CC SUPERCROSS RIDERS:

#2 – Cooper Webb (Red Bull KTM). Cooper Webb was one of the most dominant 250cc riders of all time. He claimed two 250cc Supercross West titles and one 250cc National Motocross title by 2016 before moving up to the 450cc class. In 2019 Webb joined KTM and started winning in the 450cc class. He claimed his first premiere class Supercross Championship in 2019, and his second Supercross Championship in 2021 and is riding with the #2 plate in 2023.

Webb is already starting strong in 2023; he took second at the season opener in Anaheim and scored another second-place finish in San Diego. At the time of this report, after Anaheim 2 he was tied for second place in the points chase, just four points away from first place.

#7- Aaron Plessinger (Red Bull KTM). Plessinger, the 2018 250 West Supercross Champion is now a veteran of the 450cc class and has garnered a few podiums along the way, and is eager to claim his first 450cc class win. He was off to a good start with an eighth-place finish at the season opener.

#14 - Dylan Ferrandis (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha). Ferrandis won half a dozen overall victories and multiple podiums on his way to winning the 2021 450cc Pro Motocross National Championship. He’s scored some 450cc Supercross podiums but has yet to win a 450cc Supercross main event. He suffered through several injuries last season but is strong and ready to return to the top of the podium in 2023. Dylan scored a fourth at the season opener in Anaheim with a strong come-from-behind ride.

#32- Justin Cooper (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) was the 2021 250cc Supercross West Champion and was set to defend the title in 2022, but a broken foot just before the opening round kept him out of the Supercross season entirely in 2022. He’s returning in 2023 riding select 450cc class Supercross events to gain experience on the big bikes.

250CC SUPERCROSS RIDERS

#128 - Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM). Vialle is a two-time FIM Motocross World Championship MX2 Champion (2020, 2022). 2023 should be a learning year for Vialle who comes to the U.S. Supercross series from France, but be ready for some surprises because this guy knows how to win. He’ll be riding in the 250cc Supercross East series.

#40 - Stilez Robertson (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha). Robertson is a solid 250cc rider who already has scored one career 250cc Supercross West podium and one career Pro Motocross 250cc podium. Robertson added to that tally at Anaheim 2 with his first podium of the series putting him at third overall 250cc Supercross West.

#43 - Levi Kitchen (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha). Kitchen turned pro with the team during the 2021 Pro Motocross season, where he earned three top-ten overall finishes. Kitchen took first overall in the 250cc Supercross West for his first win of the season at Anaheim 2.

#29 - Nate Thrasher (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha). Thrasher already has one career Supercross 250cc West victory and has added a Supercross 250cc Showdown win to his resume. He’s focused on putting together a consistent season to add a Supercross 250cc East title to his tally.

#58 - Jordon Smith (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha). Smith was the 2018 250cc Supercross East runner up with several wins and podiums to his credit. He’s hoping to step up to the top of the podium once again in the 250cc Supercross East.

#54 - Nick Romano (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha). Romano turned Pro in 2022 and had some decent showings in his first season in the 250cc class. The teenager shows promise and talent and should continue to move forward as he gains more experience in the 2023 250cc Supercross East

That is your Parts Unlimited/THOR Supercross line-up for 2023. Remember, these riders are vying for a Supercross title, as well as earning points for a place into the play-offs for the new SuperMotocross World Championships. So root for your favorites because every point counts. ■

Always Improving Refining Helmet Design for a Range of Riders

6D had good news for dealers at the Louisville NVP, announcing that Parts Unlimited now carries both 6D off-road and street helmets in addition to the MTB helmets already in stock.

In other words, dealers now have easy access to 6D’s revolutionary motorcycle and MTB helmet line, letting riders of all kinds take advantage of the unique OmniDirectional Suspension (ODS) technology found in every 6D helmet. In addition to the ATB-2T MTB helmet, Parts warehouses will now be stocked with the ATS-1R street helmet and, in the off-road category, the ATR-1, ATR-2 and ATR-2Y helmets.

Since its inception more than 10 years ago, 6D has continued to expand, and the company is proud to now have helmets in five market segments, including off-road, youth off-road, street, MTB and BMX/DH. That growth, though, has come with plenty of challenges along the way.

One of the earliest challenges the team at 6D faced was scaling down the ATR-1 off-road helmet to create a youth version. The first attempt just didn’t fit all the kids that well. The company learned the hard way that these young rippers had head sizes all over the spectrum, and they were not fitting about 30 percent of them. So, it was re-engineered and redeveloped as the ATR-2Y right on the heels of the very successful ATR-2. It shares all of the same excellent features of its parent helmet.

6D considers the off-road helmet market to be the best place for developing cutting-edge helmet technology as these riders really put a helmet through its paces. Understanding the value of the ODS technology to the rider, 6D was motivated to address the street market as rapidly as possible.

The ATS-1 has also seen an exceptional amount of investment over the years with the new ATS-1R being certified to ECE22.06 and FIM FRHPhe-01 in sizes XS-M.

The ATS-1R also features 6D’s ODS technology, which makes the helmet more compliant over a broader range of energy demands than traditional designs, so it’s an ideal choice for safety-minded riders everywhere. The ATS-1R has all the perks riders want in a helmet, like great looks, excellent ventilation and a shield that’s easy to swap. For street riders, the ATS-1R is the best of both worlds: technology, features and comfort all in one innovative helmet. Just as 6D has faced challenges in the past, so have dealers trying to stock 6D helmets. Now, thanks to Parts Unlimited, ordering 6D helmets is simple and efficient, and stock is as close as the nearest Parts warehouse. ■

THE 2023 MOTOAMERICA MEDALLIA SUPERBIKE CHAMPIONSHIP

The 2023 MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship is shaping up to not only be the most competitive of all seasons, but it’s also looking a lot like a case of “out with the old, in with the old.”

While the MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike series may have lost Danilo Petrucci to the World Superbike Championship during the offseason, the Italian’s departure has breathed new life into 2013 AMA Superbike Champion Josh Herrin’s racing career as he will take over the Italian’s seat on the Warhorse HSBK Racing Ducati New York’s Panigale V4 R.

It starts with two-time defending MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Champion Jake Gagne and the 12-win, 15-podium season in 2022 that led him to his second successive title on the Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha Racing YZF-R1. Gagne wasn’t as dominant as he was in taking the 2021 title, but he was plenty good at withstanding the constant pressure of Petrucci and the Ducati to take the title in the final round by 20 points.

With Petrucci gone, Gagne’s teammate Cameron Petersen stands out as his likely challenger. The South African won two races in 2022 and stood on the podium 12 times in what was his first season with the dominant Yamaha squad.

If that’s not enough to excite fans, 2017 MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Champion Toni Elias is also back as the Spanish former MotoGP winner is a late addition to the class via the Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki team.

But wait, there’s more.

The King of MotoAmerica Superbike racing also makes a return to the grid in 2023 with five-time Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier back home after two seasons of racing in the Moto2 World Championship. Beaubier will be armed with a Tytlers Cycle Racing BMW S 1000 RR as he goes for a sixth superbike crown.

While Herrin, Elias and Beaubier are rejoining the Superbike wars (Herrin won the 2022 MotoAmerica Superport title while Elias has been raising a family and surfing in California) it’s the ones who haven’t left who still sit at the top when bench racing about who will emerge as the 2023 Medallia Superbike Champion.

The Westby Racing Yamaha YZF-R1 must feel like a comfy couch by now for Mathew Scholtz as the South African and the team will be together for their eighth straight season in 2023. Scholtz was fourth in last year’s title chase with a win and 11 podiums on the season.

Spaniard Hector Barbera has crossed the Atlantic to race in the British Superbike Championship for 2023 but PJ Jacobsen, his former teammate at Tytlers Cycle, will be back and he’s joined by Beaubier on the Tytlers BMWs. Depending on how quickly Elias can get back up to speed, he’s never one to count out. He will be joined on the Vision Wheel M4 ECSTAR Suzuki team by the returning Richie Escalante, the 2022 MotoAmerica Supersport Champion ready to start his sophomore season on the Suzuki GSX-R1000 Superbike. The 2023 MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship season should be an entertaining one. ■

Staying Power Feedback from Long-Term Tire Testing

When talking about the MICHELIN StarCross 6 tire, one of the words that comes up a lot is more. The tire has more traction, grip and durability than its predecessor. It has more technology. And, now, riders have had more time on the tire since its debut nearly a year ago.

That time spent on the MICHELIN StarCross 6 off-road and motocross tire range has given riders – including journalists – the chance to prove all of Michelin’s claims about the tires for themselves.

Kris Keefer with KeeferIncTesting.com spent about 10 hours on the StarCross 6 Medium Soft tire. He was impressed by the grip, saying, “Within this 10-hour window I have spent with the tires, not once was I caught out by the tire sliding out under lean when I wasn’t expecting it. This is important when choosing tires.”

The MICHELIN StarCross 6 tires also add a level of comfort and stability. Keefer notes, “If you ride tracks with lots of ruts that get bumps in them, the StarCross 6 front tire gives you some added cushion within those ruts when leaning.”

This feedback didn’t come as a surprise to the team at Michelin. In testing, it found that the StarCross 6 had up to 16 percent more traction when new compared to its predecessor. Thanks to MICHELIN Silica Technology, things only get better as the tire ages – the StarCross 6 boasts up to 19 percent more traction when worn, giving riders confidence even as the miles add up.

MICHELIN Silica Technology helps maintain the integrity of the tread blocks for long-lasting durability and predictable grip. Allan Brown of DirtRider.com says, “Overall, durability is surprisingly outstanding. The knobs have worn in a flat pattern, helping retain a sharper edge to cut into the dirt, just as Michelin engineers described.”

Another technology found in the MICHELIN StarCross 6 tires is MICHELIN Adaptive Design. In addition to the tread pattern of each tire being designed specifically for the terrain, the specific positioning of the tread blocks on the three zones – central, intermediate and lateral –is associated with a specific shift of these zones. These designs share a single goal: To offer an exceptional grip/ behavior compromise for the front and exceptional grip/ traction and longevity for the rear. This technology is available in all versions: Hard, Medium Hard, Medium Soft, Mud and Sand.

The feedback from DirtBikeTest.com’s Trevor Hunter proves why the MICHELIN StarCross 6 is such a great choice for riders of every level. “The front tire worked really well,” Hunter says. “Under braking, the tire tracked straight, predictable, and didn’t roll or get mushy. As you get past the braking and into initiating the corner, the lean angle traction and feel is even more impressive.” ■

The Feel is Real Coil Spring Conversions for the Win

The feel of a motorcycle’s controls are crucial to the rider’s sense of connection with the machine. Throttle response, shifter throw, brake feedback and other factors all contribute to the way a bike feels to operate, and how well a rider is able to connect to it. In particular, clutch feel plays a big role in how easy a bike is to manage, affecting everything from starting and stopping to stalling out when navigating parking lots or trails.

Since 1948, Barnett has focused on clutch components and the way their operation impacts the rider. Pioneering new products and materials, Barnett is on the cutting edge of clutch technology and is constantly rolling out new components to help improve the durability, feel and performance of your customers’ clutches.

The latest product to roll out of Barnett’s Ventura, California, headquarters is a Clutch Spring Conversion Kit for select Yamahas including the popular Super Tenere, early V-Max, FJ1300, and others. This kit converts the bike’s stock diaphragm clutch to a conventional coil-spring clutch,

completely changing the feel of the clutch lever and the way the clutch engages and disengages.

Diaphragm clutches have unique characteristics, including a reduction in pull effort as the lever gets closer to the handlebar. Some riders like that feature, while others find the inconsistency hard to adapt to. On top of that, diaphragm springs aren’t generally offered in different rates, so what you have is what you get and there’s little room for tuning.

Enter Barnett’s Clutch Spring Conversion Kit. It’s an easy swap; just unbolt the original pressure plate and diaphragm spring and drop in Barnett’s pressure plate and coil springs. The kit includes a CNC-machined hard-anodized aluminum pressure plate, plus two sets of heavy-duty coil springs and all necessary hardware for an easy installation. With this kit installed, your customer’s Yamaha will have a totally different and more conventional clutch feel, with more progressive and controllable engagement.

Since Barnett knows that clutch behavior is a personal thing, this conversion kit comes with two sets of springs that can be mixed and matched to provide a variety of pressure options to suit rider preference and engine performance. From stock to heavily modified, this conversion kit can handle the power.

For the ultimate in performance, Barnett also offers a Street/Sport Clutch Kit to fit beneath this conversion kit. Barnett’s clutch packs offer tremendous torque capacity and durability. With either Kevlar or carbon-fiber friction plates (depending on the application) and tempered-steel drive plates, these packs are built to handle big power, all while offering smooth and consistent engagement. ■

Mud Mania!

Big Lugs Offered in Massive Sizes

When it comes to riding in mud, some people avoid the stuff, afraid of getting stuck or splattering the crud all over their rigs and their gear. Others, well, they seek it out. For those who don’t steer around the big mud holes and like their trails as loose as a landslide, High Lifter Tire & Wheel has the new, massive Outlaw Max and extra-large Appex Alloy HL21 wheels to match.

How big are we talking? The Outlaw Max comes in 12 popular sizes ranging from 28/10-14 all the way up to monster-truck spec 40/10-24 beasts. Meanwhile, the HL21 is offered in 20-inch, 22-inch and 24-inch sizes to support your customers’ big-wheeled, mud-mania dreams.

Regardless of the size, the Outlaw Max is an optimal option for charging through muddy terrain. This new model from High Lifter is an evolution of the iconic, bog-conquering Outlaw 3, with updated features to elevate all aspects of its performance.

The top features of the new Outlaw Max are the tread design and wider, 10-inch width. The Outlaw Max’s lugs are massive, measuring 2½ inches at the shoulder and 2 inches at the center. These pre-grooved, dual-stage blocks and square shoulders dig in and push. The aggressively siped and stepped center lugs and huge voids

ensure mud gets dropped and flung off rather than sticking to the tire.

With a 10-inch width, the Outlaw Max has a wider footprint than most agricultural-style treads, offering superior traction and floatation without a big weight penalty. As aggressive as it looks, the Outlaw Max’s overlapping center tread, and the tuned-flex of the eight-ply carcass, provide a surprisingly smooth and predictable ride on firmer surfaces.

The Outlaw Max is an excellent way to churn through slop, and High Lifter’s HL21 wheels are a terrific match for these gnarly ag treads. A unique 12-spoke design offers edgy style that compliments the Outlaws, and they’re offered in Gloss Black with machined spokes and an all Gloss Black option. Offering an impressive 1,100-pound load rating, the HL21s exceed the strength of OEM wheels, providing added durability. Not only that, all High Lifter wheels come with a no-hassle Lifetime Structural Warranty.

High Lifter has so much confidence in its wheels, and is so committed to owners being satisfied, that if your customers bend or break a wheel, it will be replaced for free. It doesn’t matter how the wheel gets damaged, and the warranty is good for the life of the wheel. ■

Commitment to Performance

Chains and Wheels for Racing

From professional elite teams to the weekend warriors, racers and riders rely on RK and Excel’s proven strength, reliability and quality. For RK Chain and Excel Rims, performance is a commitment.

RK 520MXU

Extreme elements call for extreme chains. When conditions turn muddy, sandy, wet, or if customers just want a chain that provides consistent horsepower delivery from the start of a race to the end, RK offers a sealed Supercross, motocross and off-road racing chain called the MXU.

RK’s GB520MXU features ultra-thin UW-seals which is perfect for bikes with narrow clearance and delivers triple the life expectancy when compared to a non-sealed chain. RK’s UW-Ring seals utilize triple barrier grease protection, plus anti-debris technology. Anti-debris protection is vitally important to maximize chain wear life by eliminating debris friction between internal components.

RK’s UW seals also feature small contact points to reduce cold start drag. UW ring thickness is 50 percent thinner, and has 65 percent less friction than O-ring chains. GB520MXU has a maximum tensile strength of 8,000-foot-pounds and weighs just over three pounds per 100 links making the MXU a great, light sealed off-road chain.

Excel A60 Rims

Excel’s flagship rim is the Excel A60 Rim. The A60 was developed specifically for professional Supercross and motocross racing applications. Excel A60 Rims are structurally 15 percent stronger than current Excel Takasago Rims. They feature a V-Curve profile to help mud slide off the rim better, helping reduce rotating wheel mass.

The A60 is only available in black and is characterized by a metallic silver pin stripe on both sides of the rim. Excel A60s are available in a range of sizes and can be laced to both stock and aftermarket hubs. A60 rims are used by eight-time GNCC champion Kailub Russell of FMF KTM Factory Racing off-road.

Excel Takasago Rims

Excel’s Takasago Series Rims are also suitable for Supercross and motocross racing and are constructed from 7 Series aluminum alloy that meets or exceeds OEM quality specifications. Unlike the Excel A60, Excel Takasago rims are available in a wider range of colors and sizes.

Rim *colors include Black, Gold, Silver, Blue and Yellow. Takasago Rim width and diameter availability ranges from mini bikes to Adventure bikes, and even include supermoto sizes. Excel Takasago rims can be laced to both stock and aftermarket hubs. Excel Takasago Blue Rims are used by 2022 450 Motocross Champion Eli Tomac of Star Racing Yamaha.

No matter what type of riding your customers do, from Supercross and motocross to off-road, RK Chain and Excel Rims have a product to perfectly suit their needs. ■

Dominant Domain New Helmet is a Blast from the Past

Dealers and other visitors at the Louisville NVP Product Expo had the chance to get a first look at ICON’s new for 2023 Domain helmet line. Given the helmet model’s history with ICON, consider that peek a future look at a blast from the past.

After a decade-long absence from the ICON helmet range, the Domain returns to the lineup with a decidedly neo-retro twist. The futuristic styling combines with ICON’s core design ethos of avant-garde styling with premium, quality construction, purpose-built for the street rider. The Domain helmet meets ICON’s “All World Standard” which meets or exceeds Australian, European, Japanese and U.S. safety and testing standards.

In re-introducing the Do main to the riding public, ICON has completely upgraded

released in 2006. It’s a bold move by a company that is always reaching forward, yet truly reveres its past.

The new ICON Domain helmet is a marriage of that neoretro styling and craftsmanship combined with the latest in helmet technology. Beginning with a lightweight shell of hand-laid layers of pre-impregnated fiberglass, the Domain utilizes an advanced design to create an overall compact look.

A highly efficient venting system paired with ICON’s moisture wicking Hydradry liner helps create a versatile and ideal helmet for short jaunts across town or for those long extended rides, particularly in hot climates.

The helmet includes an antifog clear Domain shield, which features pristine clarity and is also available in various mirrored finishes.

The MotoShield will be available as well, with a moto-inspired visor attached to the shield. Graphics will come with either the Domain shield or the MotoShield, and some will include the OTT spoiler (available separately) for even further customization.

The Domain is also compatible with ICON’s HelmLink Bluetooth communications system, which seamlessly integrates with the helmet and is sold separately. Designed by Sena Communication Devices, the HelmLink features Bluetooth, voice-activated digital assistant access, One-Click-to-Connect Mesh Intercom™ and a new rear facing light system with adaptive flash.

The controls are mounted seamlessly within a specifically designed recess inside the Domain helmet, reducing any exterior bulk. The internal foam is channeled out for the system speakers, boom microphone and antennas. ■

Dual-Sport Tires Ready for Action

Do your customers think their off-road bike is feeling a little shabby? An easy way to breathe new life into any dual-sport or dirtbike is with a tune-up that includes a fresh set of tires.

While rounded-off knobs spin and slip across the ground, tall, sharp knobs dig into the dirt of singletrack trails and fire roads, making your customer’s bike accelerate, turn and brake better. It’s all about the way the tires bite into the terrain, so if your customers are in the market for new tires, the Bite MX from AMS Tires is a terrific option, and it’s available in four common sizes to fit most popular dual-sport machines.

The Bite MX is an extremely versatile 80/20 tire that delivers exceptional performance at a price point your customers will love. AMS offers the Bite MX in 80/100-21 and 90/100-21 fronts and 110/100-18 and 120/100-18 rears as commonly found on bikes like the Honda CRF450X and Yamaha WR250R. With these affordable tires – MSRP runs between $99.95 and $132.95 – your customers can keep their bikes rolling on fresh rubber without breaking the bank.

The foundation of the Bite MX is a sturdy four-ply carcass that’s tuned to yield a balance of durability, handling, and ride quality across a wide range of terrain. Extensive testing ensures the tire’s sidewall and tread foundation

are tuned to tackle everything from rocky technical trails to wide-open, high-speed fire roads and desert expanses. Capping it off is an aggressive tread structure molded from a natural-rubber compound that balances durability with strong, consistent traction in the wet and dry.

AMS’s test riders settled on a fairly aggressive tread pattern for the Bite MX, focusing on off-road performance, while maintaining some stability and smoothness on hard-packed dirt. Semi-wide block spacing along the center of the tire bites into the trail when the surface is soft and loose, and careful block placement promotes strong self-cleaning when the trail gets muddy. Along the shoulders of the Bite MX, tread spacing is reduced to provide enhanced support for consistent feedback and traction while cornering.

From the inside out, the Bite MX features materials, technologies and design aspects intended to increase its off-road performance. If your customers are rolling around on rounded-off knobs, let them know that fresh tires will improve every aspect of their bike’s performance. ■

Geometry Lesson Innovative Engineering in a Chest

The technology in the Alpinestars A-1 Pro chest protector sounds like something from a science-fiction novel, which is a testament to just how high-tech this piece of riding gear really is. In addition to being an excellent barrier between the rider and the outside world, the A-1 Pro is also designed to be ultra-light, ultra-compact and ultra-ventilated. Riders get all the perks of a chest protector without the bulk or discomfort.

The A-1 Pro chest protector is CE-certified Level 1, and it is the lightest chest protector in the entire Alpinestars range to carry that certification, weighing in at only 664 grams for the M/L size. The certification is just proof that despite its light weight, the A-1 Pro provides a premium level of protection against impacts. Alpinestars athletes around the world have been relying on the A-1 Pro since its debut, confident in the chest protector’s capabilities.

Alpinestars designed the A-1 Pro using Polyhedron Hybrid Technology, which relies on layering and geodesic polyhedrons to achieve maximum strength with minimal material. The easiest way to think of the chest protector is to picture a gridwork of geodesic domes – think biospheres or those uniquely shaped homes from the 1960s and 1970s.

The geodesic polyhedron design has a high level of structural strength and imposed load performance, making it a

Protector

great way to fend off impacts without having to use a lot of bulky material.

Alpinestars designed the A-1 Pro as a dual-zone chest protector. The central area features a harder compound, which is surrounded by a flexible soft compound backed with bio-foam padding. This design ensures comfort and ease of movement without sacrificing the ability to take an impact.

The central zone of the chest protector is open to allow maximum ventilation, and airflow is created through dynamic air pressure created by the rider’s forward motion. Heat is vented sideways through channels in the bio-foam padding.

The A-1 Pro also has a highly perforated, semi-rigid back protector mounted on the bio-foam chassis, which also features perforations. This increases the ventilation to provide maximum coolness and comfort. In all, Alpinestars reports the A-1 Pro is 200 percent more ventilated than its predecessor, the A-1 Roost.

Adjustable shoulder straps and V-belts secure the A-1 Pro in place, and the fit is enhanced by the flexible chest, which will mold to the rider’s shape. There are also adjustable, removable shoulder pads that offer roost coverage. ■

Sustainable Stopping Environmentally Friendly Brake Pads

From everyday street and recreational off-road riding to flat-out competition, some of the first characteristics riders consciously look for in a motorcycle are power and handling. While they are actively relying on braking performance, they may not appreciate it until it fades.

With over five decades of braking system technology and design under its belt, SBS understands that stopping power is critically important for riders, and equally as important is manufacturing those brake components responsibly.

In 2021, SBS made a commitment to fully embrace sustainable business in both production and output of its brake pad products. They outlined a plan involving extreme reductions in potentially harmful metals that had traditionally been used in brake pad materials. However, this feat is not as simple as it sounds. SBS remains dedicated to braking performance on all fronts, which is why its experienced team is proudly executing a plan that’s been several years in the making. The result is improved and optimized braking performance and responsible manufacturing.

Appropriately named the SBS Better Brakes series, availability has now kicked off in a long-term transition of brake pads for street, off-road, V-Twin and scooter applications, all benefitting from improvements in critical areas of pad performance.

One of the most notable of these areas are the brake pad compounds. SBS engineers have refined its brake pad compounds to be completely copper and nickel-free for sintered applications and antimony-free for ceramic applications. This change plays a crucial role in reducing heavy metals that can be transferred to the environment via brake dust.

This revised compound also translates to improved, more stable braking performance. The new metallic makeup delivers an improved coefficient of friction that has shown to produce between a 9 percent to 12 percent improvement in stopping distance over previous compounds in SBS’ testing of HF, HS and MS pads.

Additionally, riders can enjoy a stronger initial bite and improved recovery thanks to improved heat resistance with SBS’ revised compound. As riders may know, heat is the enemy of brake performance, so SBS Better Brakes’ higher heat resilience can translate to a better sense of predictability and reduced feeling of brake fade.

These performance benefits through the Better Brakes transition will take place with 95 percent of SBS’ brake pads by 2025. Initial transitions dealers and customers may recognize now are with high-volume part numbers from SBS, then moving down the line in a similar fashion. Rest assured, SBS Better Brakes products can easily be identified with the new wave and leaf logo on the packaging.

With the implementation of the revised compound, the SP and HS brake pads from SBS became extremely similar in composition and performance, so SBS has opted to make things simpler for all its customers and transition SP into the HS line throughout the first half of 2023. ■

Popular Accessories for a Popular Vehicle

When a vehicle is a hot seller, aftermarket accessories for it tend to be hot items, too. This is definitely the case with the Polaris RZR – no matter how good it is, there are plenty of customers who want to take things up a notch by adding aftermarket touches. And, as the miles and rides add up, there are going to be parts that need replacing, too. Moose Utility Division helps riders take care of both the cosmetics and the maintenance with a host of new RZR products.

The OEM front grille on a RZR is plastic, and swapping it out for a Moose Utility Division front grille made from a durable aluminum is a big way to amp up the looks of the front end. It also gives the RZR a boost in the toughness department. The bolt-on design makes this an easy upgrade that takes minimal effort.

Moose Utility Division also offers a portable light show in the form of the Premium Power 2-Inch Quick Release

Whips. Each whip has a 2-inch inner-diameter tube that is packed with LEDs to make a bold statement. A free app allows the user to control the whip via Bluetooth, and there are more than 300 colors and 200 patterns to choose from, including standards like strobe, flash and fade. Plus, the lights on the whip can be synced to music. The whips feature a quick-release base to make installation and removal easy, and the wiring is built into the base itself.

Moose Utility Division also has a plug-and-play harness for the whip. It can be used with any 12V accessory, making it a versatile piece for additional electronics.

For riders who are more interested in performance than looks, Moose Utility Division’s billet shock fork set for the RZR Pro R is made from 6061 aircraft-grade billet aluminum. This is a big upgrade from the cast shock fork that comes stock on the RZR Pro R, and to make it even sweeter, no modifications are necessary for installation.

When it’s time to replace worn parts, Moose Utility Division has a number of options, like an Accelerator Pedal Assembly that gives riders the same quality as the OEM gas pedal but at about half the price. There are also replacements for the primary clutch bearings, skid plate fasteners, tilt steering shock and rotors.

The OEM replacement rotors are made from 420 highcarbon stainless steel, and they are engineered to have greater strength, friction and durability than their OEM counterparts. ■

Still Rolling Preventing Deflation with a Mousse

Off-road racers know the importance of not just having good tires, but of having good tires that won’t deflate after a puncture and leave them stranded in the middle of a competition. One of the easiest ways to prevent that scenario is by replacing the tire’s inner tube with a mousse to prevent deflation in the case of a puncture. The latest mousse insert from Dunlop has been getting rave reviews from top race teams for both its performance and its longevity.

Factory KTM Off-Road has been using the Dunlop mousse extensively, and the team reports that it is the most stable and consistent mousse they have ever used. The team riders say Dunlop’s latest version feels less springy and provides more feedback, making it an ideal addition to their race tires.

Any mousse will change the performance characteristics of the tire, and not always for the better. However, the Dunlop mousse is designed to prevent negative characteristic changes to the tire, so riders can get that perfect combination of both performance and protection from deflation. In fact, the fitting pressure and stiffness are about the same as a tire set at an air pressure of 13 psi. This consistency means there is no reason why an off-road racer shouldn’t be using a mousse to prevent deflation after a puncture from a perforation, shock or pinching.

The riders at Factory KTM Off-Road also raved that the Dunlop mousse lasts an impressively long time. The team gets three to four races plus practice out of a single mousse insert.

Not only does the Dunlop mousse have longevity on the track or trail, but it lasts a long time on the shelf, too. The two-year shelf life means dealers can confidently stock up without worrying about the mousse eroding or losing performance.

Dunlop designed the mousse for use in all off-road riding conditions plus closed-course competition, like Supercross and motocross. The version available through Parts Unlimited is exactly the same as the ones used by top off-road race teams like Factory KTM, AmPro Yamaha, Coastal GasGas, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna and RMATVC.

Each Dunlop mousse comes packaged with instructions and lube for installation. There is also a Dunlop sticker, just waiting for a spot on a toolbox or race trailer, as well as a sticker to record the date the mousse is installed. ■

Piston Kits for Popular Snowmobiles

As the winter season is well underway, many snowmobilers may have realized their engines are more tired than anticipated, or maybe deep powder brought on an unfortunate failure. To the rescue comes ProX with a range of replacement pistons for 2-stroke engines that might have scuffed, worn or broken pistons from hours of heavy-throttle fun.

ProX specializes in new 2-stroke pistons that fit many popular machines, including recent additions of late-model Arctic Cat, Polaris and Ski-Doo sled models.

ProX 2-stroke pistons are cast manufactured by leading OEM suppliers, using a proprietary alloy that keeps heat-induced expansion to a minimum. This is ideal for maintaining proper piston clearances in the harsh environments in which snowmobile pistons operate. Piston skirt stability is considered, too, for minimal piston-to-cylinder wall clearance that’s so crucial for consistent ring seal.

In addition, each piston’s crown, top ring land and top ring groove is hard anodized to help protect from potential damage of excessive heat and detonation, along with preventing ring micro-welding.

ProX snowmobile piston skirts are treated with MOS2 coating for improved break-in and shielding against scuffing and cylinder wear. Improving upon

original designs, some OEM single-ring applications are reconfigured for two rings to further improve compression and heat dissipation.

ProX replacement pistons are available in stock bore and oversize options. Kits include a piston, rings, clips, pin and top-end bearing – a setup that offers a complete and straightforward drop-in installation. ■

» Dealers can learn more about ProX replacement piston kits by contacting their Parts Unlimited rep, and by checking out the Snow catalog and www.parts-unlimited.com.

Essential Equipment New Digital Leak-Down Tester

Suck, squish, bang, blow. That’s the simplified explanation shop teachers of yesteryear used to explain the four phases of a 4-stroke engine. Each stroke plays a critical role in enabling an engine to run, but it’s the “squish” and “bang” strokes that yield the power and performance your customers desire from their vehicles. Assessing the health of the components involved in those stages would normally require engine disassembly – unless you have a leak-down tester.

Motion Pro’s new digital leak-down tester easily allows your customers and techs to check the condition of an engine’s piston rings, head gasket and valves. This compact tester is simple to use and exceptionally accurate. In fact, the unit meets FAA specifications for cylinders below 5.0 inches. If it’s precise enough for the aviation industry, you know it’s good enough for your customer’s dirtbike, street bike, ATV or SXS.

Motion Pro’s new digital gauge has a large, backlit display that registers total leak down, as well as input pressure. If the gauge shows less that 14 percent leak down, the engine is in good health. Anything above that suggests a rebuild

is needed, and where the air is escaping from – intake or exhaust, radiator or adjoining cylinders, or the crankcase breather – will inform which components are worn.

This leak-down kit includes three adapters to fit all common spark-plug sizes, and is equipped with a ¼-inch adapter for attaching to an air supply. A rugged rubber boot protects the gauge and the whole kit comes in a case for easy storage. ■

From Bombers to Bikes A History of Innovative Braking

As Parts Magazine journeys into its 30th year serving Parts dealers, now might be a good time for a quick stop to review DP Brakes’ role in that history. Besides the overwhelming support from Parts dealers who promote DP Brake pads to their customers, Parts Magazine has long helped promote and inform dealers about the sintered metal technology that DP Brakes pioneered for the motorcycle industry. However, before any of that happened, a little history: Dunlop Aviation had been formed during World War II when the British military realized that big RAF bomber planes

needed better brakes than what the spongy drum brakes of the time offered. Dunlop Aviation’s answer was disc brakes. Later, at war’s end, much of Dunlop’s new-found disc brake technology was applied to the automotive and motorcycle industries, opening a new chapter in travel safety.

By the 1970s Dunlop’s disc brake division was sold to raise capital for Dunlop Tyre. The new company became Dunlopad (later to be DP Brakes), and its sintered metal brake pads were featured for the first time in Parts Magazine’s Volume 1, July/August 1994 issue.

A follow-up article in the September/October, 1994, issue explained how Dunlopad’s sintered brake technology works. In addition to improved stopping power, sintered metal disc brake pads created minimal brake dust, noise and brake fade. To this day those traits are found in all level of DP Brakes’ sintered pads that have been fine-tuned for sportbikes, road racers, touring, off-road and motocross applications. ■

» DP Brakes’ technology continues to grow and improve, and to learn more, Parts dealers are encouraged to contact their reps, check out the Parts Unlimited catalogs and go to www.parts-unlimited.com.

New Year, New Piston Tips for Breaking in a Fresh Top End

Your tech or customer has installed a Wössner piston kit on a bike, and reassembled as per the bike’s shop manual, and now it’s time for that first startup. To ensure optimal performance and longevity of the piston, rings and cylinder, it’s important to ease the components into service with these simple break-in tips you can pass along.

For the very first startup, bring the engine up to medium temperature while gently varying rpm to no more than half the rev limit. Once the temp readout hits the midway point (or the cylinder is very warm to the touch), shut the bike down and allow it to fully cool.

Repeat this process three times, allowing the engine temperature to rise a little higher each time. Finally, run the engine until it reaches full operating temperature. Since component size changes with temperature, the goal of

this heat-cycle process is to gradually bring the components to operating tolerances.

With the engine cool, inspect the cylinder and head bolts for proper torque, check the fluid levels, look for leaks and remove the spark plug for inspection.

Now it’s time for light-load riding. As before, vary the rpm and avoid heavily loading the engine. Ride the bike or vehicle for 10 to 15 minutes, then stop and allow the engine to fully cool. Do this light-load riding once again, this time for 15 to 20 minutes, with occasional and brief runs up to full rpm.

Allow the bike to fully cool and then perform a final inspection. At this point the engine can be considered properly broken in and ready to perform. These are general guidelines, so always refer to the OEM service manual for specific instructions. ■

Optimized Off-Road Pistons

Wiseco has been making pistons for more than 80 years, and one of the things that has kept the company going for so long is constant innovation. Most recently, Wiseco has introduced all-new 2022 Yamaha YZ125 pistons, plus updated and optimized late-model KTM 350 and 450 4-stroke pistons.

Like all Wiseco pistons, these latest options are completely engineered, developed and manufactured in-house in the USA.

The new 2022 YZ125 pistons are perfectly in line with Wiseco’s history of developing 2-stroke pistons for powersports applications. The engineering team at Wiseco was excited to develop pistons for Yamaha’s updated 125cc engine to provide optimal performance.

YZ125 riders can choose from one of three piston styles, all designed for durability and performance: ProLite, GP Series or Racer Elite. While the ProLite and GP Series are an excellent upgrade over OEM, the Racer Elite pistons are the high-end racing application.

When it comes to 4-stroke applications, Wiseco already had excellent pistons available for late-model KTM 350 and

Wiseco revised and updated its pistons for late-model KTM 350cc and 450cc models to provide better durability and performance.

450 pistons, but the company felt there was room for improvement. Utilizing in-house dyno testing benchmarking against OEM components, the revised and updated pistons are engineered for even better durability and performance.

The skirt shape on these pistons covering various KTM 350 and 450 machines (plus similar Husqvarna and GASGAS models) has been optimized and treated with an ArmorGlide coating for improved stability and reduced friction. The forging design maximizes wear resistance as well as the strength-to-weight ratio. Each piston includes the DLC coated wrist pin, clips and premium rings. ■

Choice Chains Less Friction, Improved Performance

Friction from a motorcycle’s drivetrain is a detriment when speed and reliability are concerned. Friction robs a motorcycle of horsepower, and it puts undue stress on a drivetrain. Minimizing drivetrain friction led Regina Chain to develop its exclusive line of ZSE chains, now offered in 520 sizing to fit motocross and off-road/enduro motorcycles.

The ZSE chain boasts unique features within its bushings, plates, pins and a redesigned Z-ring that’s particularly narrow to minimize friction. Less friction means more speed and reliability, plus improved fuel economy.

The ZSE’s Z-rings reduce overall chain width, helping minimize articulation friction. Lubrication is enhanced, too, because it effectively creates a spring effect to ensure the lubrication seal lasts over time. The result? Vital lubricant is securely trapped between the plates and chain lobes for continuous lubrication and extended chain life. Made of high-carbon alloy steel, the plates’ outer surfaces are gold-finished to help shed foreign residue during long enduros and cross-country races. The 520ZSE is Original

Fingertip Finesse Performance Sportbike Levers

The first thing many riders do after swinging a leg over a motorcycle is place their fingers on the lever controls and give them a couple squeezes. It’s just one of those things.

PSR understands this feeling firsthand, being founded and run by a group of passionate motorcycle riders. That group also understands that brake and clutch levers are simple components responsible for critical function, knowledge that is evident in PSR’s Apex and GP levers for sportbikes.

Apex levers utilize a lightweight, shorty design optimized for reduced wind drag and actuation. Available for both clutch and brake locations, Apex levers allow riders to tailor them specifically to their liking with micro-adjuster knobs for fine-tuning of the levers’ ergonomics.

Taking precision and lightweight design to another level are PSR’s GP levers. Also available for both clutch and brake, GP levers feature a patent-pending, two-piece design for another level of adjustability in the length of the lever in addition to the capabilities of the micro-adjuster.

This design also aids in reducing wind drag, making them an advantageous option for track days and races alike.

Both Apex and GP levers are CNC-machined for strength and are available with several anodized color options so your customers can complement the race look they’re going for. PSR’s levers cover a wide range of sportbike applications and are all backed by a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee directly from PSR. ■
