President’s Corner As you read this, the year is rapidly ending. In a few days we will be celebrating the arrival of a new year. It seems that 2021 rushed in as the year that we would make a full recovery from the effects of Covid and be back on track with Club events. Unfortunately, the year didn’t quite work out that way. The threat of Covid hung over every aspect of Club Life during the early part of the year, thus impacting what events we could do. Despite the obsticles we were still able to have a great year that included some very special events. We started the year with our Annual Run to Islamorada, followed by the weekend run to Mt. Dora. In May we had The Mystery Poker Rally put on by the Kidd’s, which was a great success. The Monthly Porsches and Pancakes Breakfast continued each month, along with the Thursday Night Socials which gave members the opportunity to interact monthly. In August we had the Escape to the Cape, run to Cape Coral, Florida. This was a great event with over 150 members

Shift into Social Christy Spangler, Social Chair Season’s Greetings! Can you believe December and the end of 2021 is upon us already? This time last year there was so much uncertainty with the holidays and the pandemic. It is nice to be able to make plans to visit with family and friends this year for the holidays. It is a tradition in my household to take the 944 Christmas tree shopping. I strap the Christmas tree on top the car (with a moving blanket of course) and bring it home. Do you include your Porsche in your holiday traditions? If so share a picture on our Facebook group page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ gcrgroup. Begin marking your calendar for 2022. Register for the following on clubregistration.net: January 8, 2022: Drive & Dine to Islamorada Fish Company.
September 28 - October 2, 2022: North Carolina Tour. Be on the lookout for emails from Ian Gerada via “enews” with more information on upcoming and current events. You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at goldcoastregion.org/calendar/ and on clubregistration.net for event updates. We have begun planning the 2022 events, tours, drives and socials. Sadly, having seasons is not something we’re used to in South Florida. This is why my wife and I always take a yearly trip up north with the Gold Coast Region. We enjoy driving the roads while taking in the breathtaking views, and this year was no different! However, little did I know what was in store for us this time around. The Georgia/North Carolina mountains are what I call my “happy place.” We drove up a few days early to enjoy the scenery and get in a few good drives. At 4 p.m. on the first day of driving we stopped at Ingles Supermarket in Murphy, NC. This is when we noticed there was a stream of coolant coming from the rear of my 911 Turbo. Editor’s Notes Wow
what an interesting year. The past two years have been a challenge to us all but 2021 has seen many improvements. This year our social team helped to get our members together with a new member and volunteer picnic. At the event, we educated new members about all of our GCR programs and thanked our volunteers for their service. Members also participated in a charity for children around the world. As you can see by the center photo the club is sending joy to many children thru the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child Shoebox program. A new members has volunteered to chair the program next year. We will be publishing more details how everyone can participate in this wonderful charity.
Roger Fabel, Editor
We added several talented Gold Coast volunteers to help with the production of the Kassette. We have been on a mission to upgrade the Kassette. Some of those changes have been made but in January we will launch a new format. Thanks to those who have supplied their stories. Please keep sending your material.
Just last week our social team conducted a planning meeting for the 2022 calendar of events. Many of the participants were new members. Some great ideas were presented and you will see many as the calendar rolls out next year. Don’t forget to volunteer for the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race. Please contact me if you would like to provide an item for the silent auction. All profits go to the Ronald McDonald House. I hope you all have an enjoyable holiday season.

North Carolina Gold Coast Fall ‘21 Mountain Tour Article by Ed Blair, Photos by Christy Spangler and GCR members
There are very few automotive experiences that rival driving a Porsche though the mountains. This last October marked the third annual Gold Coast PCA Western North Carolina tour. This year we took a slight deviation when we elected to stay at the Copperhead Lodge, located on the Georgia / North Carolina Border. For those of you not familiar with the lodge, it is a collection of free-standing cabins in addition to a main lodge with a bar and restaurant. From this northern Georgia launch point, we were able to experience all
and we formally request you come along on all our trips! However, it is the group that makes these trips so exciting. Everyone in attendance had something share, which is what makes this event so special. I encourage you to consider taking your Porsche to the mountains at least once. The experience will leave you with a profound appreciation for the exceptional handling of your car. You might find yourself hooked like so many others and want to repeat the journey yearly. You might be thinking to yourself, “My car is not fast enough; the car
Carolina. The Tapoco is stunning, and the food is exceptional. The group seemed to share the inclination that the club should stay at the Tapoco for our next trip. Your wish is my command! The club has reserved the entire Tapoco Lodge from September 28 to October 2, 2022. This location is nearly impossible to book, even for a single party. Subsequently I was required to book it a year in advance in order to get the entire hotel. At the time of this writing the club has already locked up over half of the 27 rooms and cabins. If you have

We could not have asked for better weather and the road conditions, as always, were exceptional. I would like to personally thank Christy Spangler for her efforts as trip photographer. I would also like to thank Richard Akirmaian for leading the group on more than one occasion. Richard, you are a natural

No matter the model, you should have an ear-to-ear grin lasting well after the driving is over. During our event we stopped at the Tapoco Lodge in Western North
interest in attending this event please go onto Club Registration, sign up and then book your room right away. The Tapoco is situated in the middle of the best driving roads North Carolina has on offer and the ambiance of the Tapoco cannot be beat anywhere in Western North Carolina. Step Up – Volunteer – It’s Time for 48 Hours at Sebring Porsche Club Racing at Its Finest If you like Porsche cars, if you like being around people who like Porsche cars, if you like automobile racing and the racing folks as well, then you absolutely need to both attend and become involved with the 2022 edition of the 48 Hours at Sebring.
Side by side racing in the rain during the 2020 edition of 48 Hours at Sebring. A GT2RS and GT3Cup enter Turn 1 following the green flag at roughly 75 mph and about 18 inches apart. The 29th Annual 48 Hours at Sebring will be held February 3-6, 2022, at Sebring International Raceway, just a scant two-and-a-half-hour drive from south Florida. It is the pre-eminent Porsche Club Race and the first held each year in the country. Approximately 350 race cars, all Porsches exclusively, their drivers and their substantial support teams come to Florida in early February to enjoy the racing, atmosphere, and all Porsche has to offer on the most historic racetrack in the USA. Racing is spectacular, and the weekend offers multiple opportunities to get close to drivers, cars, and fellow Porsche enthusiasts.

The biggest key to enjoyment of the four-day event is to be involved. Volunteer to work some, part or the full weekend. There are plenty of fun and essential jobs to help you be involved as well as bring you into the center of the activities. Saturday and Sunday are the big race days, but on Thursday and Friday there are practice sessions, qualifying sessions, and vehicle inspection. There are a myriad of volunteer opportunities. Folks can choose to work registration, “corners,” the grid, tech inspection, timing and scoring (limited people), and general or miscellaneous positions as needed by the 48 Hour Committee Member chairpersons. It is not necessary to work the same job all day, or all weekend for that matter. Give yourself the chance to learn one position in a morning and another in the afternoon. Work all day somewhere and then enjoy a second day taking in the sights and sounds of the event. Experience for most any volunteer position is not necessary; we will train you, and it will be a great experience you receive. While all volunteer positions are fun, and very helpful, the corner worker spot is probably the best if you wish to be close to the action! Each corner

by Mark Johnson, Saff Writer on the track—and there are 17 corners at Sebring—generally has a spot for two SCCA trained corner workers. These men and women watch for everything that happens on the track to help inform and protect the drivers and their vehicles. They watch for debris on the track (oil or car parts); they spot faster drivers coming up from behind to warn the vehicle ahead; they advise of accidents or off-road travel. Through their observations they communicate with the drivers by using multiple flag signals and via radio to race control officers. In many locations they are mere feet from cars flying by at speed. It is the closest a non-driver will ever get to the track to feel the thunder and excitement of race cars. A PCA volunteer who works corners is another set of eyes for the two people working race safety from their spot along the track. Want to be right next to the action? This is your spot. Don’t forget to bring your camera for up close photography of Porsches on track, at speed, jostling for position and podium finishes.
48 Hour volunteer sign up occurs through the website: http:// www.48hoursatsebring.com/volunteersignin.php Please visit this site to enroll. You can select your days, times, and preferred volunteer positions. A volunteer may also select the “miscellaneous” position. In this case, the volunteer will be assigned to various duties around the event as needed by the Committee members. There are two key people to look for and get to know. The first is our 48 Hour Volunteer Cochair, Mr. Paul Raben. Paul receives the volunteer requests from the website enrollment and works to make certain all the essential jobs are covered by the volunteers available. The second is Ms. Sherry Fabel. Sherry coordinates with Paul and she works multiple duties at the Registration Desk. In relation to the volunteer corps, Sherry will make job assignments for the miscellaneous jobs and send the volunteers where needed.
An Additional Opportunity – The Silent Auction As we learned in the October 2021 issue of Die Porsche Kassette, 48 Hour at Sebring is presented by both Suncoast Region and Gold Coast Region PCA. Proceeds from the weekend events are evenly split between the two Regions and then are presented to the local Ronald McDonald House Charities. The reader may remember that GCR presented a check for $11,000 to RMHC as a result of the successful 2021 event last February. Beyond race fees, the major source of these funds is the Silent Auction held during the event. Sponsors, corporations, and individuals contribute all kinds of items of value that are shown in the registration building leading up to the Saturday night festivities.
All attendees are given the opportunity to place written bids on these gifts of value, with the gift awarded to the highest bidder. There is a widely diverse selection of objects available from race helmets to wine baskets, golf weekends, or auto racing memorabilia. Should our Gold Coast members, or their companies, have something they might contribute to the event and Silent Auction, it will be greatly appreciated! Our Editor, Mr. Roger Fabel, is the Gold Coast Region Silent Auction CoChairperson. Roger may be reached as follows: rfabel@aol.com or by phone 954-7522501 should there be any questions regarding auction gift donations or other silent auction questions.
Ms. Sherry Fabel at registration for volunteers, sending folks to the right locations for over 15 years. If you drive up for the day, no accommodations are necessary. If you come for two or more days, there are multiple hotels in the area that have suitable space for 48 Hour participants, crew, and volunteers. The main landing page for the 48 Hours at Sebring contains much information for purview and offers references for the the local overnight facilities.

Autocross Update
Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
Our October AutoX at Sebring was fun, but wet. While the rain was pretty intense, the lightning was what shut down the event—not once, but twice. Many of the competitors in the first sessions got dry runs, a circumstance that explains the big discrepancies in times. Speaking of times, please check out all AX results on the Gold Coast Region website under the “Track Events” tab: https://www.goldcoastregion.org/autocross/. Thanks are once again in order to Suncoast Region for allowing GCR to use the skid pad when they have track events at Sebring. Also, a big thanks to those members who attended the GCR/DE and donated helmets to our AX loaner helmet collection. PCA requires that helmets used in DE bear the current or next most recent Snell certification. Therefore, only helmets with the 2020 and 2015 certification may be used in DE, so if you have a helmet with 2010 Snell certification, please consider donating it to our AX program. Our final events of 2021 will be a “double header”; i.e., two events in one day at Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR) Kart Track. This approach solves several problems and has been used successfully by other clubs. Here’s how it works: Event #5 Morning event for the early birds 7:45-8:45 AM Check-in/Tech/track walk 8:45-8:55 AM Driver meeting 9:05 AM First car out 12:00-1:00 PM Break; afternoon group begins arriving Event #6 Afternoon event for late risers 12:15-1:15 PM Check-in/Tech/track walk 1:15-01:25 PM Driver meeting 1:35 PM First car out 4:35-??? PM Finish of competition runs; fun runs begin Competitors may register for one or both events and pay a registration fee for both events if they register for both. Each event counts towards end-of-the-year points. Each event will be on the Kart track, with plans to offer 4 to 8 runs for up to 32 participants in each event. Moving into 2022, our first event will be the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race AutoX challenge. We hope to use the same two-event format at Sebring on Saturday, 5 February, as outlined for December at PBIR. We plan to limit participation to 32 drivers in the morning and 32 drivers in the afternoon. Our plans also include an autocross school on Friday morning, February 4th. The idea here is to offer newcomers an opportunity to learn autocross in a non-competitive environment with a small group of students. This plan will also allow school participants the opportunity to volunteer at the Club Race in the afternoon. We are also considering again a specialty keepsake for all autocross participants, pending approval. So . . . if you are thinking about learning more about autocross, plan on coming to the school on February 4th. To continue offering a world-class AX program, we need a new site. This could be a BIG parking lot, an air strip, or a similarly large piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our AutoX events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues, and school/government parking facilities. Most recently, we used the BBT Center parking lot, which was great: big, centrally located, and reasonably priced. But a repaving project put an end to using that venue for us. We need your help. What we need is someone to help get our foot in the door. Do you know of a site? Are you the person who knows the decision-maker at the potential site? Please call me at (954) 292-3915 if you can help us talk to the right person to secure a new AX site. In 2021 most of our AX events have been held at Sebring in conjunction with Club Race or a regional DE. While this plan has proven manageable, members have expressed a preference for not needing to drive so far. It would be preferable if a potential site were not more than a one-hour drive from the Fort Lauderdale area. Tentative AX Schedule for the first half of 2022 Event #1 02/05/2022 Morning @ Sebring Skid Pad; 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race. AutoX challenge, similar to plan, above. Event #2 02/05/2022 Afternoon @ Sebring Skid Pad; 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race. AutoX challenge, similar to plan, above. Event #3 Either 05/03 or 04/30 at Sebring Skid Pad. Event #4 Possible “piggy back” event with the Zonefest AX at American Muscle Car Museum—or a new location???

PCA Gold Coast – Member Profiles For year’s end 2021 we have a special treat for everyone. We feature the Gold Coast Region’s “second oldest living member” in the history of our club, and what a great feature it is. “I’m just Lee Wood! Only seven letters, no middle name, and no nickname!” In working with our members we offer a basic set of questions for them to have them start somewhere. Our very first question is: “Name/nickname?” Lee’s response is well, PRICELESS. Lee was born in Miami in 1941 and turned 80 this past April. He has spent most his life in Miami or Miami Beach. His profession prior to retiring in 2002 was Funeral Director. The family business, founded by his father, was called “Walsh & Wood.” They were a smaller operation, but they serviced an elite clientele. Although retired for nearly twenty years to the keys, Lee still maintains his professional funeral license. He and Rosemary, his wife, have had a place in Plantation Key, the next key south of Key Largo, since 1959. Rosemary and Lee have been “going together” since they met in 1958, when Rosemary was just 13! (Lee was 17, so at least they were close in age, sorta.) While attending the University of Miami, Lee remembers picking up Rosemary from grade school in his Lincoln. Apparently, she fit in well with the college crowd. They were married in 1963 after dating for five years. They celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in June. Their two children are adults. Chris (no middle name) Wood is 47 and living in North Carolina. Holly Wood, their daughter, (“another long story” per Lee, also no middle name) is four years younger than Chris. [Side note: It seems we will all need to get the insight regarding the missing middle name - and the long version of Holly Wood!] But, what about the Porsches, you may ask? Buckle your seat belts; it’s quite a ride. Currently, Lee owns and maintains two PCars. The first is a 1962 356B “Normal” Cabriolet in Summit Grey. The second is a 2004 base Boxster (986) in Arctic Silver. Lee’s 356B has been raced, and has been presented nationally in many concourse events, mainly during the 1960s and 1970s.

Rosemary & Lee Wood with their 2004 Boxster at their home in Tavernier, FL The car and Lee have received over 100 trophies at these judged events. Special recognition for the Summit Grey 356 occurred when Lee’s Porsche was chosen for the centerfold of the October 1971 edition of Road & Track. The national magazine covered the 16th annual Porsche Parade in Sun Valley, Idaho in ‘71... more on that later. The ‘04 Boxster was acquired by Mr. Wood after reading about the car in Die Porsche Kassette classified section. Thinking a second Porsche would be similar to “another hole in the head,” Lee could not resist. The 986 had 34,000 miles at the time and while on paper it may have sounded “blah” (his words, not the writer’s), the car is absolutely flawless. It was new to him and with 225hp it felt fast when compared to the 60hp in the 356B. Lee has enjoyed the Boxster by attending the 2020 North Carolina tour, the Lake Placid “Mural” tour, and the Tradewinds Park Car Show & Picnic. Closer to home they have enjoyed the Tour of the Keys and Islamorada Fish Company, all of which are Gold Coast Region PCA recent events. What pandemic? Over the years, Lee Wood (no middle name, NMN) has owned a total of four Porsche vehicles. His very first was a 1961 356B 1600 that was purchased new for $3,600! This was a seriously basic car; Signal Red and black vinyl interior with one option, a single headrest. No radio, but a black plastic plate with “PORSCHE” inscribed covered the hole where the radio would have been installed. The 356 purchase was inspired by his father’s many trips to the 12 Hour Race at Sebring. Senior Wood would watch the 550 Spyder, the Giant Killer,

Mark Johnson, staff writer dominate over the Ferraris while being driven by legends such as Phil Hill, Dan Gurney, and Stirling Moss. Young Lee was 21 at the time and he had no real idea of the value of the car. Back in the early ‘60’s the Gold Coast Region did not exist, only the Miami Sports Car Club, so he joined that group and went rallying. According to Lee, “it wasn’t until 100,000 miles later when I went to sell it, did the awakening happen.” We can only imagine the value of that 356B today. Along the way, Lee befriended a Delta Airlines pilot who traveled to Germany each year to purchase the latest Porsche. It was a religious pilgrimage in a sense. The pilot’s last Porsche was a 356 Carrera 2, which was sold to GC PCA members Bill and Jean Robinson. This latest purchase by the Delta guy was among the first 911s to reach the shores of the United States, and it was a true head turner! The pilot offered to sell Lee this new 911. This Delta captain also suggested that Lee’s old 356 be sold to members of a new club, Gold Coast Region, PCA. Bam, done! Mr. Walt Lohmann was President of GC PCA at the time. The club was meeting at the Tropical Acres Steak House on Griffin back then. Gold Coast Region was only four years in existence. Walt took Lee under wing, along with a substantial number of other early members: Stan Pearlman, Bob Simmons, Freddie Ratliff and others. Later they were joined by Buz and Donna Hawn, George Hauser, Jack and Joyce Fuller, Steve and Dottie Kidd, Mike and Barbara Joffee, Dennis DeFrancheschi, Bud and Cauleen Styles. The list goes on and on and is exceptional in quality of members. In Lee’s estimation, Gold Coast became the greatest region of PCA. It’s members were unstoppable on the track, premier in concours judging, totally dominating anything and everything they touched. At the Boston Parade, the Gold Coast Region took 6 of 10 overall awards in competition against all the Porsche Regions in the USA at that time. Lee (NMN; just 7 letters) Wood is a self - proclaimed Concours Nut! He certainly leans toward stock condition for his cars, but he’s not above painting the fan shroud Candy Apple Red and will add lots of chrome to highlight the beauty of a Porsche flat-4 or flat-6. If it comes
to modifications, look for a re-jet of the carbs, a space-out to wider rims, and the latest rubber. The man understands the nature of the contact patch and car control. He will also add velocity stacks, trick out the suspension and remove most anything that isn’t bolted on. The idea is that when racing, the car needs to be on a strict diet: weight is the enemy. Only carry enough fuel, and plan on running out of gas just AFTER you cross the start/finish line. At 60hp in a 356B power versus weight is crucial. When asked: “What do you enjoy doing with your Porsche?” Lee responds: “concours events, autocross, and being with Porsche People!” People are the ticket for Lee. He and Ms. Rosie have been around the big block when it comes to participation. They have attended and competed at five Porsche National Parades. These include the Potomac Region in 1969, Northeast ‘70 in Boston, and Sun Valley in ‘71. Gold Coast Region hosted the Parade held at Colonnades in Palm Beach (1968), where Lee was the Chair of the Social Committee. The last Parade was the North Carolina Region at the Biltmore Estate in 1981. Parade events notwithstanding, Lee and Rosemary have visited Rennfest in the Peachstate Region twice. They traveled to all Sonnefest Parades at both Harder Hall and the Holiday Inn in Sebring with Lee as concours chairman. Speaking of the 1971 Porsche Parade in Sun Valley Idaho, it was quite the event. Lee, Rosemary, and son Chris attended. They drove from Florida to Sun Valley for Parade 71. Full disclosure, Lee and family “towed” the 356 on a trailer cross country. They did not drive the 356 to Utah. Young Ms. Holly stayed in Florida with family as she was a bit too young to attend. Road & Track wrote an article for the October 1971 issue about the 16th Annual Porsche Parade. The lead photo for this feature article was none other than Lee, Rosemary and Chris Wood in their 356B cruising along with a 914/6 of Charles Wick (GCR PCA First Club President from 1964). We might surmise that nobody from Gold Coast Region had ever been featured in Road & Track, ever, or since. PHENOMENAL! We had hoped to see the 356B Lee and Rosemary took to Sun Valley.
Road & Track Pic October 1971 Issue, captioned: “Lee & Rosemary Wood’s 356 (son Chris in back), Charles Wicks’ 914/6, both of Florida’s Gold Coast PCA Region, and Dave Hancock’s 911 from California’s Golden Gate Region at Sun Valley.” Unfortunately, Lee currently has this Porsche disassembled and stored in a garage somewhere in Miami for a rebuild, which he is doing himself. If you talk to Lee, please encourage him to put the car back together! It certainly is a beauty, and as a multiple concours winner, it deserves to be seen and driven. Come on Lee!!! Additionally, we have a complete copy of the Road & Track article from the October ‘71 issue. We will have the article posted (with credit and permission from the publishers) to both the GCR Facebook site and our website. The local stores in the Sun Valley area ran out of soft bristle toothbrushes! It is a unique look back at Parade from 50 years ago; the entire issue of the magazine is absolutely nostalgic. Lee raced. He campaigned the 356B virtually every weekend across Florida, always winning first place in Class D! In his race days competitors ran against all sports cars, not only Porsches. The competition was extreme and it gave him a great edge when they took the troops and cars to National. They raced everywhere: Sebring, Moroso (now Palm Beach International), stock car tracks, the Bay Bottom Crawl in Big Pine Key, and in parking lots
of every size and shape. Beyond life with Porsche and Ms. Rosemary, Lee is an avid SCUBA diver and dive instructor. He is a Founding Member and Vice President of The Active Divers Association. ( Photo in Table of Contents images.) This is a dive club of fifty years based in South Florida. Living in the Keys has its advantages for SCUBA and free diving. Lee also is a boater; he fishes, kayaks, and can be found paddling a board around the mangroves one to two hours each and every day. As if that were not enough, he’s also an avid bicyclist and will ride between 2,000 to 5,000 miles each year. I almost forgot! Rosemary and Lee will “camp” throughout the year in their 17 ft. Casita fiberglass travel trailer. It is difficult to keep up with them, and we are only writing about Lee and Rosemary’s active lifestyle. Mr. Lee Wood is a car nut. He loves driving, working on the machines (probably why the 356 is in pieces), and enjoys their beauty and power. As a kid, he would sit on his dad’s lap and steer. His other car job as a kid was to name every car model and year as they hit the streets. This was possible for many years until the Asian brands hit our shores and proceeded to copy saturate the auto industry with far too many brands and models to consider, according to Lee. Asking Lee about his favorite “alltime” Porsche, “has got to be the 550 Spyder!” Lee joined Gold Coast in 1966. Folks tell him he is the second oldest member of our club. He’s not certain of that distinction, but he will answer to being old. Lee does suggest that since becoming a GC PCA member, “I haven’t been the same since!” At 80, Lee is going strong. He has not lost his passion for automobiles, especially Porsches. You may note that a recent “enews” announcement from Ian Garada reported that Lee will be hosting a Porsche & Pancakes event at The Hideout in Key Largo. Stop in on the first Saturday of the month and spend some quality time with a Gold Coast legend.

This Club Is Truly About the People, Here’s Why…continued At first, I thought it was simply the water pipe that had burst, cracked, or disconnected, but I needed to get the car up on a lift to fix the problem. This was easier said than done as finding an experienced Porsche mechanic while stranded in a parking lot in Murphy, NC is next to impossible—who would’ve thought? However, as luck would have it, I was fortunate enough to speak to a passerby who told me about the Appalachian Driving Experience (https://www.appalachiandriving.com/). By this time of day, they were closed but I gave them a call to see if anyone was around. To my good fortune, Kelly answered. Right out of the gate he was ready to help. He told me they weren’t mechanics, but he was more than happy for me to bring my 911 in (about three miles away) and put it up on the lift, use whatever tools he had and hopefully get back on the road. Once we (myself, my wife, and our dear friends Dimitri and Lucilla) got to Kelly’s place, Dimitri and I put the 911 on the lift. This is where we noticed coolant coming from the rear driver’s side quadrant. Once we removed the water pump hose, (dropping all four gallons of Porsche coolant on Kelly’s floor), we checked the hose and realized this was not the issue, but rather that the water pump bearings had gone and needed to be replaced. But you see, being part of the GCR PCA club has its advantages! Within minutes of finding out what was wrong, I was able to speak to a Porsche mechanic. He told me what my options were to fix the car, and another Porsche Club Member told me about uship.com, a website where shippers bid to transport your car. Realizing we were not going to be able to drive the 911 back home, we decided to leave it for a few nights at Kelly’s place until we organized transportation. Kelly assured me it was safe in his parking lot and that he had a security camera pointing directly at it. All I had to do now was get back to the quaint little cabin we’d rented in Blairsville—sounds easy, right? With no Uber, Lyft, or cab company in the area we were again faced with a challenge. Hold on though; pump the brakes! Dimitri and Lucilla were still with us, they have a 911 convertible, it has four seats—this could work, right? Two up front and two in the back! Bingo!
So, all four our us hopped—or squeezed, really—into the 911 and took the thirtyminute drive (that felt like hours) back to Blairsville. We had the top down of course because as it turns out, a 6’2’’ person doesn’t fit easily into the back of a 911—go figure, huh? Three days later, we had successfully hired a driver to take us to the Atlanta airport about 2.5 hours away so we could rent a car for the rest of the trip and secure a shipper named Devin to transport the 911 back to South Florida. Needless to say, this experience could have been a lot worse had it not been for the following fellow PCA Members and Porsche Enthusiasts who went out of their way to help us get our car home safely. Dimitri and Lucilla Philippakis (911 Taxi Ride, Emotional Support, and helped us keep a smile on our faces) Bob Varela (Technical Help) Danny Smithyman (Helped find a mechanic and shipping information) Anthony (Technical Help) Bobby Varela (Technical Help) Kelly (Thank you for loaning us your premises and for keeping our car safe) It’s people—or friends, as I so affectionately call them—like these that make this wonderful club live up to the tag line, “It’s Not Just the Cars, It’s the People”. We gratefully arrived back in South Florida on Monday afternoon in our rental, a charming “Miami Blue” Toyota Camry. The ride was smooth and without incidence, but I’m a Porsche guy throughand-through… which is why I’m happy to report that my fixed 911 was picked up that Tuesday afternoon, raring and ready for its next adventure!

Tech Corner : The 959
part 1
Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
While recently doing research to produce the Tech Quiz for Suncoast’s 60th Anniversary Celebration I relived some of my fondest Porsche memories as I perused long-closed and stored reference books and manuals. To this day, I’m still at awe at some of the special vehicles that were produced in an artisanal manner by that small German company we have come to know and love. But none come close to my fondness of the very special 959. Let me try to condense some of the data I found: First shown as a static design study forty years ago, in 1981, it received the designation 959 and became the first member of a new and exclusive category of ‘Supercars’, road legal vehicles with a top speed in excess of 200mph, state of the art design features and price tags to match. The study was based on the 911 which would be developed into a Gruppe B rally car. In 1986 three 959 project cars made their debut in the ParisDakar rally, which they won (finishing one/two – the third entry, intended as a support vehicle, finished 6th). More successes followed and a limited production of 250 cars was announced which would be available for sale as road cars to an exclusive and very lucky few. The initial price tag was around US$250,000. (Even by today’s standards, this was an absolute bargain.) The initial price also included a visit to the Nürburgring

Circuit for a factory-run familiarization course, because this was no ordinary vehicle. The engine was a special short-stroke 2.85L flat-6 with titanium rods and crankshaft and air-cooled cylinder barrels but with water-cooled heads. Each head had four valves per cylinder and was operated by double overhead camshafts. Twin KKK turbocharges would boost maximum output to 450bhp at 6500rpm with peak torque of 370lb/ft coming in at 5500rpm. All this produced a top speed of 205mph at 7500rpm and a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds. Two versions of the car were built. The ‘Comfort’ model included A/C and additional sound insulation and the ‘Sport’ version which omitted these, along with the rear seats and other such niceties to provide raw performance. An all-new four-wheel drive transmission was used with a conventional mid-mounted six-speed gearbox connected to a front transaxle by a large tube housing the driveshaft. The front differential casing also housed a torque-splitting clutch. A new computer control system, monitored electronic signals generated by sensors which offered engine speed, throttle position and wheel speed. The latter was derived from the same sensors that controlled the ABS. The computer could calculate rate of acceleration and thereby the weight transfer front-to-rear could be mapped. With the rear wheels directly driven, the front axle torque could be varied by the computer to give optimum traction and could be controlled manually by the driver or using one of four pre-programmed modes to assist in varying road conditions offering a variable front/rear split percentage between 40/60 and 20/80 depending on the road conditions. The system had a response time between 50 and 100 milliseconds.
The body was basically that of a 911 Turbo, with galvanized steel components and additional body panels made from Kevlar and other glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) materials. The windscreen was bullet-proof. Braking components came from the 956 racecar and were servo-operated with full anti-lock capability. The suspension was coil spring/double wishbone design right out of the racecars. Concentric coil springs were used together with twin shock absorbers on each wheel. Each shock absorber had electronically-adjustable variable damping circuitry allowing for computer-control which could vary not only the car’s ride height, but also the angle of the body relative to the road. This further enhanced the ground-effect generated by underbody airflow and added yet more stability to the handling. Providing adequate cooling provided a difficult hurdle which was solved with the now iconic rear wing air scoops which would channel cool air into the very tightly packed engine bay. The car was also shod with magnesium wheels with hollow spokes for a tire-deflation warning system. This was the precursor of the TPMS. Simply, an outstanding piece of engineering. And it was also quite the eye-candy too! In a future article, we’ll get to “the rest of the story”. The 959 in America. I am so fond of it that I now own an orange version of the 959. It’s a paint-to-sample gifted to me by my talented granddaughter Sofia for my birthday! For more information on the Porsche 959 and more, please visit my website: www.PedrosGarage.com

Air...V.. Water An Evening in Miami by Mark Johnson, Saff Writer While not a PCA Gold Coast event, quite a few Club members overcame Miami traffic and late August heat to enjoy talking “Porsche.” The MIAMI SUPERCAR ROOMS in the Wynwood Art District of Miami was the venue for the “Porsche Showdown: Air Cooled Vs. Water Cooled.” Mr. Bill Hofmann of Supercar Team Social sponsored and promoted the evening to discuss the differences, similarities and pleasures in owning a Porsche of one type and another. Of course, air- vs. water-cooled refers to those Porsche automobiles built in two distinct eras; prior to 1999 were the aircooled years, and 1999 to the present are the water-cooled years. It was an evening to enjoy a classic “it’s not only the cars, it’s the people” event.
Air Cooled vs. Water Cooled at Miami Supercar Rooms brought out some beauties! Dan Hardee is in the background talking Porsche Cup racing.
– Air Cooled vs Water Cooled. HIGH PERFORMANCE Parking area! Of the 65+ guests in attendance many were Gold Coast Region PCA members. Regarding the cars, there were roughly 50 Porsches present. Mr. Hofmann worked with Club President Peter Olliviere and the PCA Board to expand the camaraderie of Porsche owners in Miami Dade

and within our region. Gold Coast PCA wishes to support Porsche related events to the betterment of the many drivers, owners and enthusiasts in South Florida. Air vs. Water discussions were presented by three uniquely qualified individuals. Guests were treated to information from Bernard Bohn of RMC Miami, Jorge Perdomo of GP Auto in Miami, and Dan Hardee of IMSA Porsche Challenge Cup racing. Bernard spoke of the history of Porsche, explaining the different models and the many unique and rare vehicles within the brand. He also referenced many models that never made it to production or were discontinued after only a few cars were built. Jorge is a talented and highly experienced professional auto technician. He provided insight regarding the advances in engineering and technology which are the hallmarks of Porsche success. Jorge had the challenging responsibility of explaining or contrasting the “yin and yang” of Air- versus, Water-Cooled P-Cars. The final guest speaker was Dan Hardee. Dan is an IMSA race driver. He commands a 991.2 GT3RS Cup Car, and has been racing in the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Series for the past three years. Dan spoke to the enjoyment of tracking (and racing) your Porsche. Each gentleman was able to provide their unique and experienced insight as to the enjoyment and value of Porsche automobiles. Beyond the guest speakers, attendees were treated to a brief history of the Miami Supercar Rooms by owner, ELO. ELO was a successful fashion model in Europe and ultimately collected over 400 automobiles in London. Then, sensing a wonderful opportunity in the USA, he moved to Miami and opened the Supercar Rooms to great success. ELO created the World’s First Automotive Dining Experience venue to celebrate the automobile at its highest level of manufacture. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the evening was the food! Everyone had the opportunity to taste the excellent roasted pork dinner offered by Chef Juan Escalona. Chef Juan roasted a pig for the event and served the pork along with several tasty sides. More than one attendee sug-

gested that Chef Juan stole the show. Still, not to be outdone by food and drink, it was the Porsches that were the true attraction. As mentioned above, roughly 50 Porsche arrived in Wynwood for the event. Within the vehicle display area were 15 or so attendee vehicles. These were combined with an additional 15 more autos of various age or manufacture to peruse and which are permanent fixtures of Supercar Rooms. Following the discussions by the experts, every member with a Porsche in the display area was given the opportunity to speak about their car. The guests offered their insights as to why they bought the specific vehicle, the year, miles, and how it was used. Hearing from these individuals was awesome, as the reasons and rationalities were diverse. Once a bit of vehicle insight was given, each owner was asked to start their car and allow the group to sample the beautiful exhaust notes of our Porsches. The enjoyment of the Porsche brand was very evident, and quite raucously loud at times. There were a select few Porsches which stood apart, notable. These were: 1982 dp Motorsports 935 I – RUF CAR Straben, owned by Mr. Pete Lima of RMC Miami 1997 Porsche Carrera 993, owned by Dr. Jeffery Gibson 2018 Porsche GT2RS, owned by Dan Hardee
The 1982 935 I – RUF CAR from the RMC Stable. It is a stunner… We offer our thanks to Bill Hofmann for arranging the event, to ELO for hosting at Miami Supercar Rooms, and to Dr. Jeffrey Gibson’s lovely spouse, Ms. Kiki Gibson. Kiki stepped up to handle bartending duties when the scheduled bartender became unavailable. A fun and relaxing Porsche
Trunk or Treat The Halloween version of Cars and Coffee by Steve Kidd
The morning of October 31 proved to be a spooky good time for a group of about 60 Gold Coast members and guests who met up with a group from Hagerty Garage and Social at their new facility in Delray Beach. While many of us are familiar with Hagerty insurance for our Porsches and collector cars, the Garage and Social component is fairly new. For those that are not familiar, here is what I googled: “At Hagerty Garage + Social, we take car culture seriously. Each location features climate-controlled, dust-free garages with 24/7 security, plus premium social space to gather with fellow automotive enthusiasts. Garage + Social is a car lover’s home away from home”
Our thanks to Hagerty managers Mike Parchment and Matt Spralding for inviting GCR to see their facility and some of the cool cars, enjoy coffee, halloween theme donuts, and lots of halloween candy. A detailer was present to provide car care tips as well as hand out samples of Mothers detailing products. While the adults were socializing, Dottie Kidd kept the the PCA Juniors occupied with arts and craft projects, including coloring a Porsche, with their favorite colors. Some of the adults and kids chose to dress up while others chose to dress up their Porsches. While no official costume contest was held, the sure winners would most likely have been
the Gonzalez families, who dressed up their Panamera and their 911 as well as themselves. The trunk and frunks were filled with decorations, candy and home made cup cakes. Thanks again to Mario, Lissette, Raul, Julie, Alyson and Hailey for the spectacular effort. Another great costume was Christy Spangler’s, as a witch and flew in on her black 944 broom. Thanks again to everyone for their participation and to Mike and Matt for hosting this ghostly event.

A PHOTO FINISH Christy Spangler, Photo Editor
Over the Top This month’s photo was submitted by Mark and Ania Krumenacker of their 2014 Boxter S. The photo was taken in Blairsville, GA on the Richard B. Russell Scenic Highway. One of the many roads they drove in the mountains which is know as the Gauntlet. Also know as “133 miles of smiles” Ania says that they went to the Tail of the Dragon for the first time on this trip and that it was “Truly one of our best vacations.” This image captures the beauty of the clouds hanging in the mountains as well as the sleek lines of the Boxter S. The graffiti on the pavement adds that extra pop of color. Ania took the photo with an iPhone 12 Pro Max. I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming!
