On the Cover: This photo was taken with my Nikon D850 in North Carolina during the Rennsport Dragon Rally. I bought my 991.2 911 Turbo in 2019 after owning a 981 Cayman and Boxster GTS. While I loved both the Cayman and Boxster, I was craving more speed, and the Turbo has definitely delivered. I'm passionate about customizing my cars, so I’ve made a few changes to its original look. My wife and I love driving with the top down, especially on winding mountain roads. The sound of a Porsche roaring through the mountains is pure music to my ears.

Considering that this will be the last First Turn of my second term as President of the Gold Coast Region, it is time to let those younger, stronger and more enthusiastic members take the reins.
Managing the affairs of the Club is not an easy job, but it is a job that is very satisfying when things go right, and massively frustrating when they don’t. Remember, the organization is run by volunteers and not paid employees. So the job is more of motivating members to work together in the interest of the Club.
As the year and my term in office runs out, I would like to thank the Board of Directors that have worked with me over the past four years, and pledge that I will support the new administration that has been selected by the membership, to the best of my ability.

Fall is finally in the air - well, South Florida style, anyway! November was full of fun and entertaining events. A first of its kind, Comedy Chronicles at Foreign Affairs, kicked off the month with lots of laughs. Then we had two drives on two beautiful days. The Stone Crab run to Everglades City was a lot of fun where members enjoyed delicious Stone Crabs with a beautiful view at Triad Seafood Market & Cafe. The next event was the Restoration & Preservation Tour starting at 9 Auto Motion with cars & coffee, then a drive to the Elliott Museum where they preserve cars from the early 1900’s to the 1980’s. Finally, a Tech Session at KMW Motorsports closed out the month.
On December 8, Jose Jimenez will host the year-end Cars & Cigars at Tabacón Cigars & Spirits.
The Social Committee will be planning events for next year, bringing back the favorites such as the Islamorada Run, Stone Crab Run and Oktoberfest as well as new and exciting activities. If you have an idea for an event, reach out to the BOD or the social committee - let’s do this!
Stay tuned to our social channels, eNews emails, the GCR calendar on our website, goldcoastregion.org/ calendar or go to clubregistration.net for updates for upcoming events and opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts.
After three years as social chair, I have decided to pass on the torch. I appreciate Peter Olliviere for appointing me to this opportunity and serving the Gold Coast Region
in this capacity. It was a challenge bringing our social program back up to speed during the waning years of the COVID pandemic. But now, with the help of many volunteers and the BOD, our social program is strong and robust. From resurrecting the favorite events to trying new things like the first Ladies of Gold Coast social, I thoroughly enjoyed serving as social chair and championing your suggestions. I had a lot of fun driving to different parts of our region and meeting many of you. I am very passionate about the Porsche brand, the PCA and the Gold Coast Region. I would like to THANK YOU, the MEMBERS, for all your support. As they say, “It’s not just the cars…it’s the people.” Now I will kick back and enjoy the drive. I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. May 2025 offer great things to look forward to.
See you soon at an upcoming event!

We have just completed the GCR elections and the results are published on page 15. Congratulations to the members that will serve for the next two years. We wish each of them well as they guide Gold Coast Region and administer the myriad of duties required to keep the club vibrant and active.
I would like to thank the board members and chairs who served for the past two years. The region has greatly benefited from their dedication and hard work. Specifically, we thank the leadership of Peter Olliviere, Dottie Kidd, Cynthia Fluhart and Carolynn Ditrichs as officers with Noemi Sanchez, Ian Gerada, Mike Del Pozo and Mark Johnson as directors and Steve Kidd as past president. Each
worked on behalf of GCR to bring quality, entertaining and fun events to the members. We trust our incoming Officers and Board of Directors will take reign of Gold Coast to further enhance the viability of the Club
Allow me to specifically thank several outgoing board members. Noemi Sanchez volunteered to chair our charity program. Her position contributed to the Club supporting the Ronald McDonald House, Samaritan’s Purse Christmas Shoebox program and the Veterans Flight program charities, to name a few. Noemi also volunteered at many of our special events. Mike Del Pozo pioneered many new events for GCR including our first golf tournament and several specialty brewery socials. Mike hosts our 3rd
Thursday night social at the Coral Springs Country Club.
As social chair, Christy Spangler has worked hard for three years with her team to provide a variety of amazing social events for our region. Christy also is part of the Kassette staff and our new PCA national 944 registry chair. Finally, Mark Johnson wears a few GCR hats. Mark, as part of the Kassette staff, provides our readers with a monthly member feature, Finding Gold. The GCR DE program was the Gold Standard for PCA on a national basis, but had drifted into a dormant space. With help from many PCA members within our region and nationally, Mark and team built back a well-organized and successful DE program.
Ian Gerada , membership chair
Where did 2024 go? Here we are, already in December, and I can hardly believe how quickly the year has flown by! As most of you know, this is my favorite time of year. Winter in Florida may not bring snow or ice, but it does offer cooler, comfortable weather—perfect for a scenic drive along our stunning coastline. For Porsche enthusiasts, this season provides an ideal opportunity to explore some of the state’s most beautiful and exhilarating coastal routes. With the open road ahead and scenic views, these drives offer the perfect blend of relaxation, beauty, and of course, Porsche-worthy performance.
While I won’t pretend for a minute that our “scenic” drives compare to the breathtaking mountain routes in North Carolina, Georgia or Tennessee, by Florida standards, these are some drives I believe are well worth doing.
The A1A Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway stretches along the East Coast, from the charming town of Flagler Beach all the way down to Key West, offering miles of breathtaking Atlantic Ocean views, charming beach towns and fascinating historic sites.

No matter where you start, you will find quieter, more secluded areas with cozy oceanfront cafes as you head north from Fort Lauderdale—perfect for a leisurely stop. As you continue, you will pass through vibrant beachside towns, including Delray Beach, Boynton Beach and Palm Beach, each with its own unique atmosphere and scenic ocean views. Along the way, take in the stunning mansions that line the route, adding an extra layer of elegance to your drive. This stretch of A1A is ideal for a slow Sunday-type drive, allowing you to fully appreciate the beauty and charm of South Florida’s coastline.
One of the most unique drives in the world, the Overseas Highway connects the mainland to Key West over 113 miles of roadway and 42 bridges. This route is famous for its sweeping ocean vistas and Caribbean-like turquoise waters. Ideal for a weekend getaway, the drive is dotted with scenic overlooks, fishing spots and local seafood shacks where you can enjoy freshly caught grouper or conch fritters. Marathon Key makes an ideal pit stop, offering a relaxed atmosphere and several marinas where you can enjoy the view.

For those seeking a unique West Coast escape, the Tamiami Trail offers a scenic route through the heart of South Florida’s diverse landscapes. Starting in Miami, this route crosses the iconic Everglades, providing views of Florida’s sprawling wetlands and wildlife before opening onto the Gulf Coast, where you will find cities like Naples and Sarasota. Along the way, stop at the Naples Pier for a glimpse of the Gulf, or continue north to explore Siesta Key Beach, known for its soft sands and breathtaking sunsets. These routes offer a blend of nature, relaxation and open highways that invite you to enjoy the drive at a comfortable pace. As we embrace winter in Florida, consider mapping out one of these memorable journeys, where the joy of the experience is just as rewarding as the destinations along the way.
Wishing all members a wonderful holiday season and a warm and prosperous New Year! Safe travels and enjoy the road!

November kicked off with a remarkable evening as the Gold Coast Region’s (GCR) Porsche Chronicles Series presented a comedy pop-up night that blended entertainment, culture and community spirit.
Held at Foreign Affairs Motorsport, the event attracted nearly 100 members who enjoyed a unique mix of standup comedy, music, culinary delights and cultural performances. Known for creating exceptional experiences, the GCR Porsche Chronicles Series once again delivered an evening that left attendees talking.
The highlight of the night was the stand-up comedy show featuring performances by comedians David Sadaka, Nadeem Awad and headliner Dean Napolitano.
Coordinated by Sadman Productions from Boca Raton, each comedian brought their own flair to the stage, delivering sets that kept the audience laughing and engaged throughout the evening.
Adding a cultural twist, Jeimmy, a professional belly dancer from La Vie Lebanese Restaurant in Pompano Beach, surprised guests with a captivating performance. Her graceful movements and authentic dance techniques offered an immersive experience into Middle Eastern culture, enhancing the overall ambiance.
Music played a crucial role in setting the tone for the evening. DJ Mundo created a playlist that complemented each segment, from ambient tracks during the pre-show to energetic beats
during intermissions. His selections ensured seamless transitions between activities, maintaining a lively atmosphere.
Refreshments were sponsored by Specialized ECU and Repairs, offering a selection of freshly made cocktails, wine and beer. Summer Allen served as the private bartender, providing professional and friendly service that enhanced the hospitality of the event. Catering was provided by La Vie Lebanese Restaurant, featuring an array of Middle Eastern dishes. From traditional appetizers like hummus and baba ganoush to main courses such as grilled kebabs and falafel, the culinary offerings complemented the entertainment and added depth to the evening.
Foreign Affairs Motorsport served as an ideal venue, accommodating performance areas, dining spaces, and social zones that facilitated movement and interaction. The venue’s aesthetic contributed to an upscale yet relaxed atmosphere suitable for both the comedy show and cultural performances.
The event underscored the importance of community involvement. As part of the GCR Chronicles team, I would like to extend a special thank you to my fellow organizers, Vanessa Varela and Jane and Ian Gerada. Their collaborative efforts were instrumental in planning and executing the night, highlighting the spirit of teamwork that enriched our club experience.
The strong turnout reflected the Gold Coast Region’s enthusiasm for diverse cultural and entertainment offerings. Building on the success of this event, the GCR Porsche Chronicles Series plans to continue providing unique experiences that bring members together. Future events aim to introduce new themes and activities, support local artists and performers and strengthen community ties.
The evening was a testament to what can be achieved when we
come together to create something special. It set a high bar for future gatherings and left attendees eagerly anticipating what the GCR Porsche Chronicles Series will offer next.

What better way to celebrate the camaraderie of the Porsche Club of America Gold Coast Region than with a spirited drive and a feast of fresh stone crabs. On November 9th, over 100 members gathered for the much anticipated Stone Crab Drive and Dine at Triad Seafood Market & Café in Everglades City, making it one of our most successful events to date.
The day kicked off under clear skies—a perfect backdrop for our Porsches. Leading the charge from Broward County, Bobby Varela guided a convoy of 34 cars through Alligator Alley towards Everglades City. From Miami, another group of 17 cars embarked on the journey, while several self-drivers joined along the way, bringing the total to around 107 members.
As we cruised along Alligator Alley, the sight of our Porsche lineup was a striking testament to the strong community that we have built. The impressive convoy turned heads and drew smiles from fellow travelers, reinforcing the pride we share in our club.
Upon arrival at Triad Seafood Market & Café, we were greeted with the tantalizing aroma of freshly caught stone crabs—a seasonal delicacy that did not disappoint. Members indulged in generous servings, complemented by lively conversations and the forging of new friendships. The café’s rustic charm and waterfront views provided the perfect setting to relax and enjoy the fruits of our drive.
But the day didn’t end there. With spirits high, many of us made our
way to the Gator Hole Pub. The laid-back atmosphere offered a delightful contrast to the day’s earlier excitement. Over cold drinks and shared stories, we reflected on the journey, the food and the wonderful company.
This event was more than just a drive and dine; it was a celebration of our shared passion for Porsche and the strong bonds within our club. A special thank you goes out to Bobby Varela and Bud Harris for leading and sweeping the group out of Broward, as well as to Trew Primack for volunteering to be the sweep driver out of Miami. Not to forget, a huge thank you to all the members who participated, making the event not just a success but a cherished memory.
As we look ahead, we’re already gearing up for our next Stone Crab Run in February 2025. If this year’s turnout is any indication, it’s an event you won’t want to miss. Until then, keep those engines revving and the enthusiasm alive.
See you on the road!

It may seem like they are everywhere, and they usually are….
Lissette and Mario Gonzales are active in virtually all things Porsche Club of America, Gold Coast Region. While they live in Miami Lakes, they are active in our Gold Coast activities throughout the entire length and breadth of our territory from Delray Beach down through Homestead and the Keys. They go out and have fun with their fellow members.
They are among the most active Gold Coast members. Anyone would be challenged to keep up with the events that they have attended or organized, but let’s try.
They host the Second Sunday Breakfast at Sergio’s in Pembroke Pines. Lissette organized the first ever GCR Ladies event at Paint the Grain, held earlier this year. We have seen them at the bowling night, many Third Thirsty Thursdays, the Casa Cuba Porsche-Pancake on First Saturdays,
the second Wednesday at both MIA BRUHAUS and 94th Aero Squadron, multiple events at Schnebly Wine and Brewery, F1 Viewing at Hagerty Garage (Lissette served the Margaritas), the past Octoberfest at Biergarten, multiple PCA picnics and drives, Tabacón Cars & Cigars, whew… and that’s just in the past six months or so. What did we miss… Lissette’s monthlong birthday party, maybe?
Lissette and Mario live in Miami Lakes and were born in Miami to Cuban parents. They have two children, Chelsea (26) and Mario (24). Their daughter Chelsea attends Nova University and she is pursuing her doctorate in psychology. She loves to be chauffeured around in the Porsche. Mario Gonzales, Jr. attends FIU. Mario, Jr., is the luckiest as he will use Dad’s car when going on dates, if he had Dad’s permission, of course. (That is
probably a very scary thought to many parents, but to Mario and Lissette, it is an additional blessing). Mario, Jr. is pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering and loves fishing.
The family is completed by their two dogs Chanel (a three-year-old Maltese) and Lucky (an 11-year-old Poodle). They were married in 1995. Doing the quick math, they have been married 29 years. These years have been “full of happiness, love, patience and blessings,” as suggested by Lissette.
Lissette has worked for 33 years in both the accounting and business development department for the package shipping company that runs those brown trucks, UPS. It is her intent to retire sometime soon. Her next post-retirement position could be more interesting as she would like to work part-time at a Porsche dealership.
This way Mario might receive a better deal on his next PCar. Additionally, her intent will be to volunteer for various organizations in her newfound spare time, including more activity with Gold Coast, we trust.
Mario is in the wholesale tire business. He has been with his existing employer for 26 years. Mario “Flaco” (meaning skinny in Spanish) fits as his nickname, but it is his ever-present smile that defines him the best. Not to be outdone, Lissette is equally blessed with a complimentary smile. Both are warm and welcoming individuals, and you can’t help but enjoy their company.
Porsche vehicles and Porsche people have been a substantial part of their lives since 2015. It was in December 2015 that they acquired their first PCar, a 2003 Boxster S. Driving it offered great pleasure and enjoyment right up until the engine blew a head gasket. They almost did not return to Porsche after that significant setback. Fortunately, the fun with the Boxster in Miami overcame the distaste of the repair. Lissette urged Mario to get another Porsche, but this time a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle. With a green light and blessings from his wife, Mario found a 2014 Boxster at Porsche West Broward in Guards Red. He bought it and never looked back.
The 2014 Boxster was followed by a 2018 Cayman, also a CPO vehicle, from Porsche Nashville. Then Mario acquired a 2018 Macan, CPO of
course, from Porsche Fort Myers. By this time, Lissette was totally hooked on the brand and the Macan became her daily. It was yet another match made in heaven, Lissette & MarioGonzales Family & Porsche. Lissette absolutely loves the Macan. The only modification or upgrade made to the Macan was wheels. Other than that, Lissette deems the vehicle perfect!
The Porsche passion now runs strong within Lissette. She suggests that an upgrade on the base Macan to a GTS or Turbo model would be appropriate. Noting that she “doesn’t like to drive fast, just knowing the power is there if needed, is fine with her.” Whether it is an evening dinner, run to the local Publix, or a longer drive to the Keys, every trip will be taken in a Porsche. That brings a great smile to Ms. Gonzales.
Not too long after the Macan arrived in June 2021, the need for speed, style and grace bit Mario again. It was a year or so after the Macan found their driveway that a friend introduced Mario to a 2017 Carrera S racing edition in Guards Red. A dealership in Orlando had this car for sale. We suspect that the anguish and anxiety of making the decision to purchase the S was challenging. Mario overcame the hesitation with the assistance from Ms. Lissette and was able to acquire the Carrera S following the two-month deliberation. Finally making a deal, Mario happily navigated the S south to Miami and home.
The 2017 911 Carrera S is a 991.2 model, endurance race edition. It is 1 of 73 total that were brought to the US shores, and 1 of 235 produced for worldwide sale. While not exceedingly rare, it is rare enough that we know who is sporting around in this beauty, Mario and Lissette.
Mario prefers to do minor modifications to the family Porsches. The 911S has H&R Springs, stunning BC Forged wheels, “catless” exhaust pipes, and a Softronic Tune. It is instantly recognized for the color, the wheels and the iconic PORSCHE INTELLIGENT PERFORMANCE decal that runs up the frunk.
Mario greatly enjoys his 911. At the same time, his favorite Porsche models are the 993 and the 997 turbo. Perhaps one day he will step into the air-cooled sect or join the turbo crew. Either will be a great addition and thrill.
Only a couple weeks after buying the Carrera, Mario and Lissette were headed out to North Carolina with the Gold Coast Region Fall Tour group, led by Ed Blair, in October 2023. It was an “AWESOME” trip by all accounts, hitting the peak color season while staying at Little Switzerland. They have also driven several times to the West Coast of Florida for the Escape events. Basically, it’s “get out and drive!” Go meet your fellow members and enjoy the camaraderie that PCA offers.
Gold Coast Region Porsche camaraderie includes Stone Crab runs, swap meets, the New Member picnics, Dade & Broward Poker runs (they won the first run we had in Broward and then went on to win one in Dade), and many DRTs, as well as DE events as observers. One day we hope to get that 911S on track. Lissette organized the first Ladies event, a paint and sip that took place in April 2024 at Paint the Grain. She hopes to set up another in 2025. She has also assisted with the PCA Juniors and our GCR Hagerty Garage events.
Looking into next year, they are planning a trip to Germany to the
Porsche Museum and the Nürburgring track as the BIG trip. They also expect to visit the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta in the latter part of the year. Their interest is to keep on enjoying these incredible Porsche machines and the Porsche people who accompany the automobiles.
Mario and Lissette joined PCA Gold Coast in 2018, and they love it. Lissette sums up their experience with the following, “After we purchased our first Porsche in 2018 my husband signed us up to join the Porsche Club of America, PCA. At first, I was like, what on earth am I going to do at this club? Are there activities for the wives? Are there women Porsche owners? Little did I know I was going to become an owner myself with a Macan or that I was going to participate in the events. I’m so glad Mario signed us up to become members of this elite group!
“Since then, we have met such wonderful people. We enjoyed all the events that we attended. It really has brought a lot of joy and adventure to our lives.
Mario and Lissettte host the Second Sunday Breakfast at Sergio's
With all the crazy going on in the world today, it is nice to be part of this well-established organization full of Porsche enthusiasts! It’s a true blessing!”
The Gold Coast Region believes that this is a wonderful two-way street. We are blessed to have Lissette and Mario Gonzales as active members of our incredible group. Thank you for joining the GCR Porsche Party!
Sundays are a day of rest, and members of the Gold Coast Region have found a great way to make the most of their Sunday relaxation through a visit to Tabacón Cigars in Doral, Florida.
Host Jose Jimenez, expected around 20 members from Club Registration enrollments. More than 30 members, guys and gals of all ages, made it to the venue on Sunday, September 22. It was a day to simply chill for the afternoon with friends and enjoy a quality stogie and an adult beverage (or two, in some cases).
Tabacón is an exceptionally nice facility with plenty of room for a large group. They offer an outstanding selection of quality cigars and drinks. If you are into sports (football), there are also several large TVs to watch the Dolphins game (and this time, they lost to Tennessee).
The initial trek to Tabacón was held back in June, where we watched the Florida Panthers Stanley Cup parade on TV as it was raining outside. This time, the day was dry but with our typical summer heat and now football
season. Getting into a cool, laid back and tastefully decorated facility to relax with your fellow Porsche pals was just what a day of rest was meant to be.
We understand that Jose is planning another trip to relax on a Sunday. Maybe we can entice him to try the Tabacón location in Plantation. Look for details about the December event in this issue of the Kassette, as the plan is to hold a cigar event on a quarterly basis.
The PCA provides numerous opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts. One such avenue is the PCA Special Interest Register, designed to foster connections and networking among Porsche model owners within the PCA community.
While at Parade in Birmingham, Alabama in June this year, I met Jeff Coe, the PCA Special Interest Register Coordinator. We talked about the registers, what they are about and that each is headed up by an advocate and what that role entails. It turns out that the 944 register needed a new advocate, being interested, I worked with Jeff to transition into that role starting this past September.
Special Interest Registers are a PCA program designed to help Porsche owners connect with others who share an interest in a specific model. With 20 registers currently available, members can join to network and exchange valuable information.
The Register Advocate plays a key role in building and supporting the community of enthusiasts for a specific Porsche model. They maintain a roster of members who own that model, including details such as vehicle attributes, unique features and contact information. While some registers are more active than others, advocates can create web pages, manage Facebook groups and send newsletters to engage members. Working with PCA, advocates can also organize events for their register. As a bridge between the register community and PCA, advocates may be called upon to coordinate participation in events. For instance, if PCA plans to showcase a particular model at an event like the Porsche Parade, they will rely on the advocate to connect with register members and gauge interest in participating.
Currently, I am planning a 944 Register event at the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race, January 31 - February 2, 2025.
If you would like to plan a register event for your Porsche model, look up your register advocate and reach out to them to initiate it.
When you thumb through your next issue of Panorama, go to the back of the magazine. This is where they have a listing of all the registers with the advocate’s contact information. You can also find the list on https://www.pca.org/connect/special-interest-groups.

This 2020 Porsche Macan just received its second Permagard Service Treatment application! It was treated to a Permagard initial application of our Reactive Polymer when it was newly purchased 4 years ago, and as you can see, it still looks be er than brand new. The Permagard Service Treatment is a process that consists of cleaning the Permagard protective coating that was installed to this vehicle 4 years ago. The beautiful Miami Blue color, manufactured by Glasurit, on this Macan is something truly special to behold. Permagard is the only product available today than can make this color shine like the night lights of South Beach! Permagard acts as a durable, sacrificial layer that is added on top of your original paint to protect 100% of the paint’s thickness over its lifespan. Permagard’s added layer, combined with 100% of your paint’s thickness, is what gives the incredible depth of shine and wet-look e ect that Permagard is famous for. Our competitors require wet sanding, compounding, and clay barring before their products can be applied. All of these processes remove layers of your original paint, therefore, reducing its thickness. Using our competitors’ products will result in reduced depth of gloss and protection, as the paint you are trying to protect will get thinner and thinner over time. Choose Permagard if you want to durably protect 100% of your original depth of gloss and shine! Call our Permagard Headquarters today at (305) 662-5070, to experience the Permagard di erence. It’s time to shine and see yourself in your beautiful Porsche!

Even though October 6th was a rainy Sunday evening, nearly 30 members came out to Zona Blu in Weston for the five-course wine pairing dinner. The staff had reserved parking spaces in front of the restaurant and directed us to the patio. As we arrived, we were greeted with a chilled welcome prosecco and a wonderful charcuterie board with cheeses and antipasti. Our hosts and GCR members, Sheila Marras David, restauranteur and her husband Lito, were both inviting and welcoming.
After an hour of mingling and socializing, we were ushered inside where three long tables were set for our group. Before service began, Sheila told us about her homeland of Sardinia and what was in store for the evening. She introduced wine expert Enrico Veggiato, who told us about the wines that would be paired with each dish.
The next three courses were beautifully plated and delicious. The highlight of the evening was when Executive Chef Andrea Fadda came out to carve the suckling pig with great finesse. The pork was then served family style as was the other main course, the Mediterranean Sea Bass. For dessert, we enjoyed a homemade cheesefilled pastry topped with Sardinian wild honey paired with Sardinian liquor.
Thank you to Shiela, Lito, Chef Fadda, Enrico and the staff of Zona Blu for this wonderfully intimate evening with beautiful and delicious food, exceptional service and hospitality. Thank you to Kevin Jones for organizing this event. By the time we finished dinner, the weather had cleared up for the drive home.
First course, traditional Mediterranean lobster salad.
Second course, soufflé of artichokes and pecorino Sardo with crispy Sardinian flatbread sprinkled with Muggine Bottarga.
Third course, homemade Sardinian pasta in a sausage and porcini sauce.

After 20 + years of running the AutoX program, we are looking to retire, most likely sometime in 2025. Dottie and I will be looking to train and mentor the next generation of AutoX chair and registrar. Please contact us if you have an interest in being trained and possibly carrying the AutoX torch in the years to come. Over the next few months, I will cover some of the most pressing situations that future AutoX managers will face. This Month, Equipment-Part 1, which will talk about the AutoX trailer. Next month I’ll discuss timing equipment. Towing and maintenance of the trailer has always fallen on the plate of the AutoX chair which can be time consuming, especially if the chair is also participating as a driver. I would suggest that in the future, alternative ways be explored to deal with the trailer. The trailer contains most of the things needed to run an AutoX!

We took to the track, HomesteadMiami Speedway specifically, for our third High-Performance Driver Education (HPDE) event in the past 12 months. Boy was it fun! It was hot too, but that only slowed a few drivers down later in the day when the track and hot tires combined to create a somewhat slippery condition at higher speeds.
Sunday, September 29, 2024 was a great day to be driving. Gold Coast had a total of 107 participants categorized into 63 total drivers, 34 instructors and 10 volunteer staff. Beyond the actual registrants, we
estimated that perhaps as many as 75 or more PCA guests attended to observe or drive in the lunch break parade laps. By the way, the parade laps raised approximately $500 for the selected charity, Honor Flight..
Sure, it was hot. It is September in the very southern tip of Florida. While autumn officially started, you could not tell by any of the attendees that it wasn’t still summertime in Dade with 95+ degree temps. At least there were a few clouds, a light breeze, shade in the garage areas and a driver lunch break in the air-conditioned Media Center café.
Water was available all day and lunch was catered by Levy Restaurants (the exclusive food/beverage supplier to the track). Our great sponsor, TuneRS, brought coffee and donuts to their garage area for everyone and this jumpstart beverage and sweet treats were much appreciated in helping the day get started.
The GCR HPDE team has worked hard to KAIZEN (continuously improve) the processes for our track days. We had a few negative comments following our first event back in September 2023. While improvement was paramount for the June ’24 event, we still experienced
issues at registration and tech inspection lines. Those challenges were solved for the most part and the process was substantially smoother and much quicker for all involved. A big shout out to Rob Cohen of 4Corner Tire and Auto Repair as we were able to pre-tech cars at his shop in Ft. Lauderdale on Saturday afternoon. This inspection of 22 vehicles, with another 8-10 on Saturday night at the host hotel, really helped.
At the track processes were also improved for those drivers arriving before the 7:00 a.m. gate opening. We had a new and larger location for registration as well as improvements in the tech inspection process. As we know, the process will help, but without great and dedicated volunteers the process can be hindered. Huge props to Susanne and Louie Maragos, Keith Hartley, Christal Smithyman and Orlando LaCalle at the gate. Inside at registration it was Neal
Donovan, Marcelo “MJ” Jacir, Susanne Maragos (pulling double duty) and the incredible Dottie Kidd getting folks waivered and banded, based on their run groups. At tech, the crew was Alejo Mendez, Carlos Castillo, Jorge Duyos, Jeff Wenger, Louis Jimenez, Jeff Ostroff, Daniel Estella and Vanessa Varela, led by Bobby Varela, Chief of Tech.
Running a total of four different groups, each driver had four individual segments to drive with their respective group (green and blue with instructors, white the solo group and an instructor group). All four groups were able to track their vehicles in distinct sessions. The tightness of the schedule made for some challenging car hopping for our instructors, but they were quite happy with the opportunity to share their respective performance driving skills.
Driving a HPDE by David Lehman
It took me a few years to build the courage to take my 911 to the track. I was worried about the car and my safety. I finally decided to give it a try at the last HPDE event in June, and my only regret was not having done it sooner. PCA does an amazing job welcoming beginners to this great sport. As a beginner, you are operating in a tightly controlled and safe environment with minimal risk of injury to yourself or your car. You get to go fast but only as fast as you feel safe. There is no wheel-to-wheel racing for beginners. Just good clean and safe fun with a certified instructor sitting beside you coaching you every step of the way. My first HPDE event was the most fun I’ve ever had in my car in nearly five years of ownership, and the most fun in any car ever. Can’t wait to do it all over again this month. If you have any doubts, hesitations or questions that a newb can answer for you and ease your mind, send them
my way. Go ahead, ask me anything. Happy to help you take the leap and spend the best day you’ve ever had with your car. You’ll be hooked after your first time. It’s so much fun!
Sincere thanks must be extended to three sets of folks. First, our instructors: without instructors there would not be a HPDE program. These 34 folks provided time and talent for the betterment of everyone on the track. Second, our sponsors: ZWECK, 4Corner Tire & Auto Repair, TuneRS, KMW Motorsports, Porsche West Broward and Dr. Color Chip contributed substantial funding of the event, and several were there in person to support their customers who were driving and the event, in
general. Thank each of these special friends when you visit their respective locations or when you see them anytime, every time.
Finally, a huge and heartfelt thanks must be extended to the key management team for our GCR HPDE. These folks have been working months on end to restore the program for the benefit of our membership. They are Dottie Kidd – Registrar, Bobby Varela - Cheif of Tech, Marcelo “MJ” Jacir – Chief Driving Instructor, Dan Smithyman – Chief of Track, Josh Breckeen – Senior DE Consultant, Steve Kidd – Instructor Coordinator and Greg Shand – MSF II Certified Instructor and DE Consultant. They are the folks who put forth the efforts
to get Gold Coast back on track! (NOTE: OK, my job as DE Manager is to organize the event, which is a reasonably large job as well. However, I’m more like a band director. It’s the band members playing the music – I simply stand up front and keep time! mj.)
It was a great day at the track with nothing but smiles and tired souls loading up at days end. We’ve been working with the Homestead track folks to establish dates for 2025. Enjoy the sidebar comments from David Lehman, now having completed his second HPDE, and the photos.
Come drive with Gold Coast, HPDE’s are fun!

Mark Lachniet took this picture of his 2015 Carrera (991.1) when he left work and found his Porsche to be the last car in the empty parking garage. The Sapphire Metallic Blue makes a nice contrast to the sea of concrete.
