On the Cover: Gold Coast Region is On Track! Dave Maher, a GCR HPDE instructor, finds time to exercise his 911 Turbo at a recent driver's education event at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The 993 Turbo is a quick beast under Dave's control, and he encourages our DE drivers to get active with their Porsches. See his article about HPDE and the FARA Superlap series which begins on page 28.

KEY STROKES As we begin a new season of PCA events, I look back at the previous year and I am amazed at the number and quality of events that our leadership team, with the support of other volunteers, were able to present to our members. 2025 will continue the Gold Coast tradition of quality events because the club is made up of very special members that work hard to improve our program. This process is not magic; it starts with members volunteering to support and build the program. As an example, look at the rebirth of our Drivers Education program over the past two years. This could only happen with great leadership and the dedication of volunteers.

Speaking of volunteers, registration is open but filling up fast for the 48 Hours at Sebring Porsche club race in early February. This event is the largest club race in the world and supported by volunteers from the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions. Once you attend, it will become one of the special PCA events on your annual calendar. Read the details of the event on pages 24-25 and sign up soon. We are planning a special “night race” that is back by popular demand. The Kassette staff hope you enjoy your monthly club publication. We have a great staff, but we need your help. I have been working on the magazine for 19 years and would like to find a graphic artist with

publication layout experience to help with our other graphic artists whose time demands are expanding with PCA national responsibilities. We are also looking for writers to help share the load. Please contact me with any questions at rfabel@aol.com We have a GCR family who needs your help. Please see page 31. My wife and I have been involved with the club for 24 years and we have seen the hearts of our members as they rallied around my cancer issues and my wife’s past and present stroke events. I pray that we can help Tim Hyland with his challenge. Enjoy your Porsche, .

Driver Education (DE) and Autocross thrived last year, featuring two DE events in June and September and six Autocross events throughout the year. These dynamic driving experiences brought drivers, spectators and volunteers together.

Looking Ahead As we step into 2025, the momentum of this past year inspires us to aim even higher. Whether it is welcoming new members, hosting innovative events or fostering deeper connections among Porsche enthusiasts, the Gold Coast Region is poised for another exceptional year. A heartfelt thank you to all our members, volunteers and organizers who made 2024 such a success. Here’s to an exciting and rewarding 2025!

Restoration & Preservation Tour Article and photos by Kassette Staff

It was a truly spectacular day to get out and drive our Porsches. For those members of our Gold Coast Region who made the trek up to Riviera Beach, Florida and onto Stuart, Florida, it was certainly worth the effort. 10

Restoration

9 Auto Motion had a nice spread ready for everyone to enjoy.

On November 16th, the morning dawn featured a clear and much cooler day. It was in the low 70’s or even the upper 60’s when it was time to leave the house for the drive up to 9 Auto Motion for the initial meet. Gordon and Kate Wardle of 9 Auto Motion hosted an exceptional “cars & coffee” at their facility just north of 45th Street in Riviera Beach. Of course, 9 Auto Motion is a valued Kassette advertiser, but more so, they are a premier vehicle service and restoration facility for Porsche automobiles. Two of their recent restoration efforts have won Blue Ribbons at Werks Reunion Amelia Island (Kevin Brook 1972 Signal Orange 911) and at Werks Reunion Monterey (Jason Crow 1974 RSR Tribute in Mexico Blue).

Both vehicles were on display at their shop. (Left)

at 9 Auto Motion checked in for the event with Ms. Dottie Kidd and President Peter Olliviere. There were roughly 80 people in attendance who arrived in 40+ Porsche vehicles.

Beyond award winners, many vehicles were seen in the multibay building in various states of disassembly, repair, paint booth process and ultimately reassembly into exceptional and beautiful Porsche autos. One ‘70’s vintage Targa in the shop, post paint booth, was bedecked in an incredible Blue Pearl hue. Yet, this was only one of many cars in the facility. Of course, “cars and coffee” included coffee. It also included gourmet donuts, cookies, a cheese and sliced meat platter, soft drinks, water and the requisite coffee with the necessary milk, creamers and sweeteners. Attendees arriving

Members interacted with staff to discuss 9 Auto Motion’s restoration process.

Spending about an hour and a half visiting with everyone, ogling Porsches in the shop and in the parking lot, it was finally time for the driver’s meeting. Ms. Christy Spangler, social chair and organizer of the event led the short meeting with the game plan for driving to Stuart. With the large number of cars headed north, we split into two groups, each led and followed by PCA drive group leaders. The destination, The Elliott Museum in Stuart.

The tour included a peek into the garages.

The Elliott Museum offers local history exhibits and a variety of collections that include automobiles, baseball artwork, Americana and a highly unique “BOOMERRANG” car racking system. The Elliot has become “a cultural hub for the community that offers a variety of opportunities to discover, experience and engage through travel.” The Elliott Museum opened in 1961 and has been continually expanded and upgraded since it was first established by Mr. Harmon Elliott, son of prolific inventor Sterling Elliott. If you wish to investigate further, please visit their website: https://hsmc-fl.com/

The Gold Coast Region and our friends from the Gulfstream Region who accompanied us, were treated to a guided tour of the Museum by skilled docents who expanded on the many wonderful and unique items to view in the building. An exceptionally unique vehicle rack and storage system which included an automized retrieval system was the three level car rack and retrieval system. It is fully automated, and it allows a computer system to find, retrieve, display and return a vehicle on demand. It is an incredible system for car storage and many guests were certainly imagining their Porsche collection stored and

pulled up automatically for an afternoon drive up A1A. With the tours over, lunch was served by Philly Down South and Gold Coast members were left on their own to find another beach style location for an afternoon adult refreshment, or for the ride home in sunny cool weather. It was a wonderful day to be out and about in your Porsche. Thank you to the volunteers of the day, Dottie Kidd who handled the registration and check-in and to the lead and sweeps, Mike and Leslie Del Pozo, Polo and Amy Pomares, Louie and Suzanne Maragos and Rich and Katie Cane.

olunteer Registration is open for the 32nd Annual 48 Hours at Sebring, which is co-hosted by Gold Coast Region PCA and Suncoast Region PCA. The race committee has planned this year’s event for January 30 through February 2, 2025. This is the perfect time for Gold Coast members to get involved. It is a great opportunity to give back to our region and have an exciting time. 48 Hours at Sebring is the premier club race event of the year as it is the one that kicks off the season. Beyond the racing and fun, the excess funds raised are donated to the Ronald McDonald House charities which helps families and their sick child feel at home. It is a great weekend of excitement with racing and fun. The 48 Hours at Sebring is held at the world famous Sebring International Raceway, the home of endurance racing since 1952. Each year for the past several years, 400 Porsches have participated in Porsche racing, high performance advanced solo driving and an autocross event. The 48 Hours is the largest Porsche exclusive and single marque racing event in the world. It should not be missed, especially since it is in our backyard. The 32nd Anniversary 48 Hours event is expected to be a huge success, just like last year. Another large gathering of participants and supporting crew are expected to attend, and that is why we are asking for your help as a volunteer. Hotel reservations are recommended for volunteering multiple days. We will need volunteers to support us and help run this huge event as we are expecting to sign up with over 300+

14

racers and advanced solo drivers when registration opens. So, if you have been standing on the sidelines and wondering how to become involved as a PCA member, now is your chance to see how you can help. If you are not sure what happens at a race event and you would like to attend, then think of volunteering for the 48 Hours as a great chance to learn how to be involved. There is a great group of nice people you will meet that will welcome you and help you be a part of the event. Volunteering is easy at the 48 Hours of Sebring. You only work a few hours at a job that is more fun than effort. You will receive a 48 Hours T-shirt, a free lunch, and will be able to attend the Friday night vendor highlight party. Then, there is the chance to meet the driver that just won the Daytona 24 Hour Race held the weekend before the club race at Sebring. Amongst the participants are past winners of the Dayton 24, Sebring 12 Hour or even the 24 Hours of Le Mans. There have even been guests that have won all three! You will certainly not find a more impressive gathering of Porsche and Porsche people anywhere! The following volunteer positions are available for PCA Gold Coast Members. Volunteer Positions Throughout the weekend, we rely on over 100 volunteers to assist us in various tasks to maintain the highest quality standards our racers have come to expect. This is where you come in because it is with your efforts that continue to make this event the success it has become. Each year you will see familiar faces

Die Porsche Kassette | January 2025

as our core group of committee volunteers have the highest retention level of any PCA Club Race committee held in North America. Most of our core volunteers have been doing this for over 10 years and the excitement next year will be just as great as the first time. It is because of this core group that you will not feel left out. We will guide you and train you to do whatever task is asked of you. But most of all, you will have fun and memories that will last a lifetime. No experience is necessary, so, come join the fun and get where the real action is, up close and personal! As a volunteer, you have great flexibility in choosing when to work. Although many choose to work the full day, you can choose the morning session, afternoon session or evening session. If you do work the evening session, we will also provide you with a meal prior to the session. Our need for volunteers starts with our Thursday test/practice starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending Sunday at about 5:00 p.m. when the last enduro race finishes. The various time slots which require volunteers are as follows: Thursday to Sunday • Morning: 7:00 a.m. – Noon • Afternoon: 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. • Evening: 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (to be determined) Check-in time is 45 minutes prior to the session. The various positions where we need volunteers for each session are: • Corner Workers 10-20 volunteers needed • Timing & Scoring 5-8 volunteers needed

• Enduro Pit Marshal 5-8 volunteers needed • Grid 7-10 volunteers needed • Tech & Scales 5 volunteers • Miscellaneous 7-10 volunteers needed For a full description, see the following: CORNER WORKERS When you volunteer for a corner, you will be assisting the SCCA corner worker as a second set of eyes. You are right up close and personal to the trackside action. One volunteer will be assigned to each corner. Many of our volunteers return each year to this position for the excitement of being right next to the race cars as they go by. The responsibilities for the corner are as follows: 1. You are a second set of eyes and ears for the SCCA worker to observe the activities on the track. 2. In the case of an event, the corner worker may ask you to wave the appropriate flag. 3. You may be asked to assist in any reporting of an on-track incident. KEY NOTES: AT NO TIME WILL YOU OR THE CORNER WORKER GO OVER THE WALL ONTO THE TRACK. THE TRACK SAFETY CREWS WILL TAKE CARE OF ANY INCIDENT. Long pants and closed toe shoes are required to work the corners.

Do not wear colors that are the same as the safety flags such as red or yellow. White or your volunteer T-shirt are okay. THE GRID your primary responsibilities are; 1. Help get each car in its assigned spot based on information from timing and scoring. 2. Do a quick check of the car to make sure there are no fluid leaks and that the engine and trunk lids are closed and secured. 3. Assist racers to grid or back to their area in the paddock. We have many returning volunteers to work the grid but we will need a few extras each day. You must be prepared to spend time standing. Also, this year we are preparing for night racing so we will need grid workers for the evening on Friday and Saturday. TIMING AND SCORING We will need 4-5 volunteers each day to assist the stewards, identifying the cars as they go by the start/finish line to verify their timing equipment is working properly. You will also assist in the preparation of the timing sheets for distribution to the grid. This is a comfortable indoor job where you can sit when not watching the cars race. TECH AND SCALES Volunteers will assist in making tech inspections for the Advanced Solo Group cars.

The cars will be inspected for tire pressure, torque lug nuts, helmet certification, inspect and check brake lights. Thursday and Friday are the busiest days. Additionally, volunteers are needed for vehicle scales and weighing the race cars. The scales are open Thursday through Sunday. The cars are weighed to make sure they are the correct weight for the car and class. Volunteers assist in pushing the cars onto the scales. PIT MARSHALS This is a Sunday-only job which starts around 10 a.m. with a meeting with the stewards. This position is necessary for the longer enduro races. Each driver is required to make a 5-minute pit stop during each enduro. We need people to observe the pit stops. The responsibilities of the pit marshals are: 1. Report to the PCA scrutinizer of any spilled fuel or fluids, etc. 2. Observe and report any crew member over the wall without the proper equipment. 3. Make sure that the maximum number of crew members over the wall is not exceeded. 4. Enforce all rules as instructed by the PCA scrutinizers. 5. Long pants and closed toe shoes are required to work this position. Training will be provided. MISCELLANEOUS POSITIONS We will need volunteers to help with the Friday night event and the various jobs that are needed. There is always something that needs to be taken care of and that is where the miscellaneous volunteers come in. You will be instructed where to go when you check-in. To volunteer, go to the 48 Hours website and look for the “Volunteers” listing on the top of the page and click on it to get the drop-down menu. This is where you can review the positions in detail and sign up. Please go to: http://48hoursatsebring.com/ volunteergrid.php to get started. If you have questions, please contact Paul Raben at praben356@gmail.com

FINDING GOLD

Thierry Ritfeld is a family businessman, and one heck of a Porsche peep Member Feature by Mark Johnson Thierry Ritfeld works in the family business, an oil and gas equipment supply company. His family immigrated to the U.S. from Paramaribo, Suriname (the smallest country in South America) 30 years ago. The company was founded by his father shortly after arriving in the U.S. Thierry became president of one of their subsidiaries, PLG-Industrial & Mining Solutions, after 12 years working in the industry. Challenging for certain, but no hill for a determined climber. Finding success in the family business, Thierry took his first step with Porsche during 2018. The car was a 1985 Rest of World (RoW) model Carrera 3.2. RoW Porsches are sold in areas outside the USA. He traded a Camaro ZL-1 with 650 HP for the Porsche.

Thierry Ritfeld, Turn 17 at Sebring, grabbing air with both right tires up! The Carrera exhibited faded, single stage red paint. It offered a 915 transmission that was clumsy and slow to operate. He suggests, “I thought to myself, this car is shaped like a sports car, but it drives more like a box truck.” In a sense, the differences exhibited between the Camaro and the Porsche could not have been starker, or perhaps unnerving. The 1985 Carrera 911 3.2 was acquired from a seller in California. The car spent most of its life in Japan before it was imported to the U.S. in 2018. Thierry committed himself to learning how to drive a vintage 911. He also dedicated his efforts toward cleaning up the Porsche. He “dialed in”

the suspension, replaced the worn-out shifter and repaired two of the seized brake calipers. Operationally, these were major enhancements to the drivability of the Carrera. He also restored the vehicle cosmetically such that the color looked Guards Red. The Carrera 3.2 became “the most rewarding car to own/drive that I have ever owned.” It was this dedication to the vehicle and pleasure of driving his Porsche that is prevalent in every aspect of Thierry’s life. Learn, act, succeed in business, in driving. Arriving at an established point and coupling his enjoyment of the ’85 911 Carrera, a desire for more Porsche

became the new goal. Thierry’s favorite Porsche was always the 997 GT3. He went full on, gotta have one! The street version GT3 would have much of the same componentry as used in the motorsport version, including the same motor as used in the race car. Growing up as a motorsports fan, the Porsche 997 GT3 was his poster car in high school. One might imagine going back a few years and watching the Brumos GT3 Cup car or one of the many other liveries of 997 attack Sebring, Daytona, Road America or Watkins Glen. For a young Thierry Ritfeld, the allure of driving a Porsche GT3 would certainly stoke his automotive future. Dreams and desires transformed into opportunity when the “right” 997 GT3 popped up for sale in 2022. Thierry was married and his wife was pregnant with their first child. A 997 GT3 was available. Many “soon to be” first time fathers would never think of another sports car. Such a dilemma would be incredibly difficult to resolve, but not for Thierry. In a single week, Thierry became a father for the first time – AND – he took delivery of his poster car, his dream car! Mrs. Ritfeld must be

the most loving wife, mother and understanding person that one will ever meet. Might she have an unmarried sister? Mrs. Devon Ritfeld and Thierry were high school sweethearts. They have been married for five years (2019) and they complete the family with Hazel, their daughter who was delivered in 2022 the same week that the 997 arrived, son Harry and their big ole Saint Bernard, Penny. Their kids are probably still a bit young to travel in the Porsches with dad, and we wonder how a Saint Bernard might fit into an Hazel and Harry enjoy the cockpit of the 997 ’85 Carrera. Penny might find room during a Gold Coast HPDE at Homestead. in a 997, but barely. The family lives Thierry is also considered a “track rat.” in the Pines. He is a valued instructor for the Gold Coast DE program and has shared his Thierry loves to drive his Porsches. experience and talent for each of the He is active with his cars. He participates in frequent road trips to instructs students in high-performance the North Carolina and Tennessee driver education events at Sebring Smokey Mountain area for multiple with Suncoast Region and their DE driving experiences. He participated program. in Targa Carolina for four years in a row, Smokies GT rallies including the inaugural Smokies Air-Cooled rally and the recent Vintage Vices Targa GA events. In 2019, the newlywed Ritfelds shipped the ’85 Carrera to Los Angeles to spend their honeymoon traversing northbound on the Pacific Coast Highway. They packed the Carrera 3.2 to the brim with duffle bags to the point Thierry could barely see out the back window. They spent two weeks on the PCH stopping at multiple towns for lunch, dinner and overnight stays. They completed the California journey in San Francisco. Two weeks driving the 911, a new bride, incredible scenery and the Porsche, never missed a beat. Devon will accompany Thierry to many of the rallies he attends.

The car of choice for the track is the 997 GT3. Unfortunately, an on-track incident at Sebring in 2023 resulted in this car being totaled. A spin at Turn 6 sent the GT3 into the wall on the outside of the corner just past the Alan Jay bridge to Green Park. Dark clouds appeared at that moment, but the silver lining that followed was twofold. First, Thierry had purchased track insurance. “Get that track insurance folks,” he suggests. Track insurance can be a huge money saver when those unexpected and inconvenient incidents occur. Second, he was able to find an arguably better example 997 GT3 in the same color, Artic Silver. He participates in 8-12 track days per year, driving at both Sebring International Raceway and Homestead-Miami Speedway. He is

currently participating in the new FARA Superlap Series. This is a competitive opportunity that does not involve wheel-to-wheel racing. Drivers concentrate on completing a best single lap time for a given track session for cars of similar performance levels. (See Fulfilling the Need for Speed by Dave Maher in this issue of the Kassette, page 28.) Thierry drives a BMW M3 in the series, but he would like to acquire a Porsche 996.2 GT3 Cup car or build a 1974 911 IROC/RSR for competitive use.

Hustling through an intermediate straight at Homestead in the GT3, during a GCR HPDE.

Vintage racing appeals to the man. He has attended several Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) events throughout the years, and he enjoys the laid-back vibe of vintage Porsche racing. As track experience, hours and

miles build. We would fully expect to see Thierry find his way into HSR with a competition license and a quality car to maneuver around the 17 turn Sebring course and other locations. The Gold Coast–Suncoast Region 48 Hours at Sebring (January 30 to February 2, 2025) is a must on his

track calendar. Thierry will set up camp in the Sebring paddock with friends Chris Olson, Albert Salvador, Vivek Patel, Sanket Parekh and Suneal Nandigam, who is now a PCA Club Racer. Several others from the South Florida GCR clan will join the weekend festivities. They park together, grill burgers (thanks Chris), and chat about getting through turns 3-4-5, and their respective speeds through 7, 10 and 17. For each of them the goal is a sub 2:20 minute lap at Sebring. They have all attained that goal. Earlier in 2020, Thierry created a group chat using one of the cell and computer application tools called IROC – I Race Old Cars. Chatter on the chat is both informative, hilarious and occasionally full of good-natured humor and needling.

Turns 3-4-5 at HMS are tricky. He added a bit of course correction

Die Porsche Kassette | January 2025

Thierry works on his own vehicles during the warmer summer months when being on track is very hot and it is simply not fun to drive an air-cooled car, or the GT3 without AC and all the windows down. As he explains,

In 2019 they were the newlywed couple, Thierry and Devon Ritfeld, with the honeymoon Carrera. “I have a bad habit of making a car exponentially worst to drive on the street just so I can go one second faster around the track, LOL!” Hence, he is always changing and modifying his Porsches. We wish we had room to cover all the passion that has gone into this auto. The list of restoration and modifications for the vehicle suspension alone is substantial. As an example, both the Carrera 3.2 and the 997.1 have BBS E88 3-piece wheels. He suggests that the E88’s are absolutely stunning on a Porsche. It is a point that is very difficult to argue.

He has worked on almost every system of the 3.2, with the exception of the motor. The RoW Porsches have higher compression ratios than their U.S. counterparts. The Carrera already runs quite strong, but there is consideration for enhanced camshafts, a modern EFI system

or individual throttle body setup. Conversely, the GT3 is lightly modified. It has MCS Dampers and Guards differential, plus GT3 Cup headers. Basically, the GT3 is great out of the box, in his opinion. On occasion, Thierry might get challenged by the cars. In those rare cases he will visit his friends at ZWECK. Suneal, Alvaro and Matt are quick to offer support and provide full shop services at their facility in the Falls area of Miami. The guys will talk for hours about car setup. The techs are super knowledgeable and accommodating. Thierry is involved throughout every process of improvement on his Porsches. He is willing to get his hands oily and learn new skills. He finds that, “poking around underneath my car with Matt or Alvaro is quite fun.” His favorite Porsche is the 1976 934. He has been to PEC Atlanta a few times, usually visiting the museum at the facility. He has driven a Carrera T at their track but would like to return to take a new 992 GT3 for a spin around the newly completed extended track. Thierry been a Gold Coast Region member since 2019.

Thierry Ritfeld shares his experiences as a DE instructor and as an amateur Porsche technician. He has helped multiple PCar friends change brakes, exhaust systems and other maintenance related needs. He believes that getting underneath a car and turning wrenches is half the fun of the car hobby. We might assume the other half is driving them at speed on a racetrack. Of course, the final half is the camaraderie that the South Florida Porsche community provides. Thierry adds immensely to each of these three halves. Why not, Porsche is fun!

Everyone loves a clean Porsche, especially Hazel.

PCA Special Interest Register Christy Spangler, PCA National 944 Registry Chair

The PCA provides numerous opportunities to connect with fellow enthusiasts. One such avenue is the PCA Special Interest Register, designed to foster connections and networking among Porsche model owners within the PCA community. While at Parade in Birmingham, Alabama in June this year, I met Jeff Coe, the PCA Special Interest Register Coordinator. We talked about the registers, what they are about and that each is headed up by an advocate and what that role entails. It turns out that the 944 register needed a new advocate,. B being interested, I worked with Jeff to transition into that role starting this past September.

Above: Christy Spangler with her 1985 944. Photo by Jevon Olea. Below: A few of the PCA Register Logos.

What is the PCA Special Interest Register? Special Interest Registers are a PCA program designed to help Porsche owners connect with others who share an interest in a specific model. With 20 registers currently available, members can join to network and exchange valuable information. What does the Register Advocate do? The Register Advocate plays a key role in building and supporting the community of enthusiasts for a specific Porsche model. They maintain a roster of members who own that model, including details such as vehicle attributes, unique features and contact information. While some registers are more active than others, advocates can create web pages, manage Facebook groups and send newsletters to engage members. Working with PCA, advocates can also organize events for their register. As a bridge between the register community and PCA, advocates may be called upon to coordinate participation in events. For instance, if PCA plans to showcase a particular model at an event like the Porsche Parade, they will rely on the advocate to connect with register members and gauge interest in participating. Currently, I am planning a 944 Register event at the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race, January 31 - February 2, 2025. If you would like to plan a register event for your Porsche model, look up your register advocate and reach out to them to initiate it. How do you sign up for a register? When you thumb through your next issue of Panorama, go to the back of the magazine. This is where they have a listing of all the registers with the advocate’s contact information. You can also find the list on https://www.pca.org/connect/special-interest-groups.

Luc - Founder of Permagard

This 2020 Porsche Macan just received its second Permagard Service Treatment application! It was treated to a Permagard initial application of our Reactive Polymer when it was newly purchased 4 years ago, and as you can see, it still looks better than brand new. The Permagard Service Treatment is a process that consists of cleaning the Permagard protective coating that was installed to this vehicle 4 years ago. The beautiful Miami Blue color, manufactured by Glasurit, on this Macan is something truly special to behold. Permagard is the only product available today than can make this color shine like the night lights of South Beach! Permagard acts as a durable, sacrificial layer that is added on top of your original paint to protect 100% of the paint’s thickness over its lifespan. Permagard’s added layer, combined with 100% of your paint’s thickness, is what gives the incredible depth of shine and wet-look effect that Permagard is famous for. Our competitors require wet sanding, compounding, and clay barring before their products can be applied. All of these processes remove layers of your original paint, therefore, reducing its thickness. Using our competitors’ products will result in reduced depth of gloss and protection, as the paint you are trying to protect will get thinner and thinner over time. Choose Permagard if you want to durably protect 100% of your original depth of gloss and shine! Call our Permagard Headquarters today at (305) 662-5070, to experience the Permagard difference. It’s time to shine and see yourself in your beautiful Porsche!

KMW Hosted Swap Meet & Tech Session By Steve Kidd, GCR Historian, 52-year PCA member and past everything Many of the older members hopefully remember the annual swap meet that we used to have “back in the day.” A local shop would open their doors, invite members to dust off their old treasures that needed a new home and roll out the welcome mat. Usually there was a twist of tech, a sprinkle of food and beverage and lots of socializing. For whatever the reasons were, this event lay dormant until 2023, when Mario, Lissette, Steve and Dottie re-introduced this event at TR3 Motorsport. The event was very well received so the same team figured that it was time to do it again.... This time, at a different shop and change up the program slightly. The tech component was titled “mid-engine madness” and focused on mid-engine street Porsches that were transformed into race cars. …. fun, selling a few garage ornaments and more fun learning about cool cars, great food and beverage and still more fun. Fast forward to November 23, 2024, planners and hosts were ready to make it happen again. But first, it is only proper that we identify all the major players that made this event possible, and again offer a huge thankyou and congratulations on a job well done. Our host, KMW Motorsports in Pompano and their incredible staff including, but not limited to Kevin, Louis, their wives and family and of course the talented team of technicians and everyone else who made their house, our house (at least for about five hours). These guys have a full-blown race shop that supports several race teams. They also make

24

Louis Milone from KMW explains suspension upgrades. modifications to street cars, so if you want to make your car faster or handle better, you will want to give these guys a call.

Our outside staff, Mario and Keith, handled parking, greeting and assisted with outside vendor set-up and space co-coordination.

Our VP Dottie Kidd, handled all on-line and day of registration and other frontend duties. Dottie does it all and can fill in anywhere. Dottie has a reputation as THE organizational guru at our events. Assisting Dottie were Larry and Tamar who always add a spark of humor when getting waiviers signed and issuing wristbands

All the above people working as a team made my job easy. I probably had a little finger in everything, but enjoyed setting up the inside vendors, managing and giving away door prizes and making announcements. I also made sure everything stayed on track and on time.

Our “food and beverage” team of Christy and Lissette served Mimosas to the vendors during their early morning set up, as well as serving coffee and Krispy Kreme doughnuts, snacks and beverages to everyone when the doors opened to buyers looking for that special Porsche part or memorabilia. They also sold some special edition shirts.

Die Porsche Kassette | January 2025

A huge thank-you to Zweck for sponsoring the breakfast, KMW for sponsoring the lunch and beverages and Gold Coast Region for providing snacks, beverages, paper goods and all the miscellaneous stuff. Thanks also to our door prize contributors that included, but were not limited to, Dr. Colorchip, PCA National and a few others.

In all, we had eight inside and four outside vendors that sold their wares from about 10:00-2:00, with breaks for tech talks, announcements and lunch. A big thanks to all vendors and hoping they made lots of money and probably some new friends. The inside tables were 3’ x 6’ and the outside spaces were the size of two full parking spaces. Tech session 1 introduced participants to the history of midengine Porsches including early Porsche race cars and why putting the engine in the middle makes a lot of sense for better weight distribution. Focus was then switched to the 914 and why this entry level Porsche was so popular from 1970-1976. At least four different engine options were offered, and one of the most popular modifications was to replace the original four cylinder VW derived engine with a “warmed over” 911 engine, such as with the example in the shop. Tech session 2, focused on the Boxster/ Cayman platform, specifically a 2009 987.2 Cayman transformed into a race car. This car is race prepared by KMW and driver Angus Rogers usually is on the podium just about anywhere he races. This session was moderator led with questions to Kevin and Louis about the different parts that had been changed to make this car a winner. Parts were identified and their functions were described. Lots of great information! Will we do it again...you bet, just remember if you are a buyer, you must pre-register for free. If buyers or guests don’t pre-register, they will be charged $10.00 at the door. Sellers are charged a small amount, but look at what you get, with added benefits to make some Porsche spending money and new friends!

HELP WANTED Die Porsche Kassette

HELP WANTED GCR Autocross Chair

We are looking for Gold Coast members who would like to help with the production of our club magazine. The following positions are open:

After 20 + years of running the AutoX program, we are looking to retire, most likely sometime in 2025. Dottie and I will be looking to train and mentor the next generation of AutoX chair and registrar. Please contact us if you have an interest in being trained and possibly carrying the AutoX torch in the years to come. Over the next few months, I will cover some of the most pressing situations that future AutoX managers will face. This Month, Equipment-Part 1, which will talk about the AutoX trailer. Next month I’ll discuss timing equipment. Towing and maintenance of the trailer has always fallen on the plate of the AutoX chair which can be time consuming, especially if the chair is also participating as a driver. I would suggest that in the future, alternative ways be explored to deal with the trailer. The trailer contains most of the things needed to run an AutoX!

FULFILLING A NEED FOR SPEED Gold Coast Region Member Insite Dave Maher, GCR member

I have been doing driver’s education events with the Porsche club for about 25 years. I did my first PCA DE event not long after I bought my first Porsche in 2000. I was 25 years old and bought a 1979 930 for $25,000 that I had found in a New York Times classified ad. I loved my early 930 and had modified it to make about 400hp and I also participated in events at Pocono and Watkins Glen for several years. In 2005, I upgraded to a 1996 993 Turbo which required the sale of the 930 plus $33,500 back then. I purchased the car from a fellow PCA member in California who used the car for track events and Club Racing before realizing it was too nice of a car to be racing and couldn’t keep up with the 996 GT3s. He did many of the track mods so I didn’t have to and it fit my Polar Silver requirement.

I continued my journey in the PCA DE events in the Northeast with the NNJR and the Metro NY regions. After about 10 years of driver’s education days, the thrill of DE events was fading so I took to “cheap” endurance, racing a BME E30 with 24 Hours of Lemons, Champ car & AER, which was an easy transition from so many years of DE’s. With only a couple races per season, I wasn’t fulfilling my track addiction. In 2016, I became a member of the PCA National DE Instructor Corps at Watkins Glen (still one of my favorite tracks) after a 3-day program in 2016, which made DE’s more fun again by sharing my experience and enthusiasm with others from the right seat. When I moved to South Florida in 2020, I wanted to get back on the track. After doing track days with several driving clubs, I became good friends with another instructor, Carlos Espetia. Carlos is a BMW fanatic who invites me to instruct at events when he is working, to which I usually say yes. Lately, he has been working with FARA USA, a group of vehicle enthusiasts from south Florida who organize exciting racing events throughout the Southeast. I have been instructing their DE events and spearheaded a growing new “Super Lap Series.”

The 993 "KLZ BUGZ" FAST

28

Die Porsche Kassette | January 2025

The Super Lap Series (SLS) is a way to compete without actual wheelto-wheel racing and to do so in a car registered for the street. Cars are classed by the following: Engine Displacement, Wheel HP, Weight with Driver, Forced Induction, Max Tire Width and Treadwear Rating. It is very similar to a qualifying session for a race. You can do as many laps in the 30-minute session as you like, but only the fastest lap counts - unless you spin or put four wheels off track – that negates that session, but not the day. While I told myself I was no longer going to chase lap times in my 993 turbo because I don’t want to risk hurting the car, Carlos managed to convince me to sign up by telling there were only two other cars in the SL1 (or top) class in the series and I would take home a 3rd place trophy if I just showed up and turned one lap. After instructing a couple more events with FARA and doing some more timed laps with SLS, I had accumulated enough points to take the lead in the SL1 class and was again chasing lap times in my 993. At a recent event at Sebring, I was able to hustle the old girl around in 2:23.9 which was fast enough to hold off a 991 GT3RS and GT4, to keep me on the podium. So, if you can’t fulfill your track time itch with your local PCA region schedule and you want to test your skills against similar vehicles, you may want to check out FARA’s super lap series!

(Editor/Sidebar: Dave Maher is a nationally recognized PCA HPDE instructor. He has supported our Gold Coast Region as an instructor for all three of our recent DE efforts at Homestead. He held the Cannonball Run record from New York to LA for seven years and owns a stunning and wickedly fast 993 Turbo with the license tag of KLZ BUGZ. Dave enjoys his track days and sees the FARA Super Lap Series as a step up from simply tracking the car, to a competitive series but not full-on racing as in Porsche Club Race for wheel-to-wheel events. He has written for the Kassette in the past and we welcome his insight into Porsche and speed. FARA USA does not compete with PCA DE events but they are a step up for many enthusiasts who choose to find competition on race tracks without full head-on racing. Autocross Update Steve Kidd, outgoing AX Chair Our last AutoX event of 2024 was held on December 14th at Port St. Lucie Fairgrounds in Fort Pierce. We were extremely lucky to get this date because our October event date was canceled due to hurricane damage, and government agencies were using the parking lot to stage emergency equipment and FPL trucks. To add more drama, the day started rainy with 30-40 mph winds. Our biggest challenge was finding ways to nail down each piece of timing equipment which kept blowing over and causing additional delays. So, you ask, did we have fun???? The answer is, yes! Everyone got in eight runs. While most morning runs were wet, the course dried off in the afternoon and we were blessed with remarkable grip and a great group of competitors along with some fabulous volunteers, that helped make this event possible. Also noteworthy is the fact that everybody had the opportunity to leave at the break but everyone chose to stay despite the extremely windy

conditions and many folks had wet feet from the morning. Special thanks to the small group that helped me make the final course adjustments in the rain, and to our great timing/admin team, Paige, James, Dottie, Steve and Julie who are always there to support our events and do timing. The tear-down crew did a remarkable job of getting the cones picked up and the trailer packed in record time. The fastest time of the day went to Ed Young driving his 2019 GT3. While Ed had the fastest time, everybody saw improvements as the day went along in addition to lots of smiles and bonding with their cars. All the times for each of the seven AutoX events can be found on the GCR website under track events. The welcoming staff at Port St. Lucie Fairgrounds have offered us two dates in 2025, one in May and another in October. However, most of you know that Steve and Dottie will be retiring from AutoX

administration after the club race. The first AutoX event of 2025 will be at 48 hours at Sebring Club Race on February 1, with AutoX school on Friday, January 31 using the skid pad and a familiar course, so mark your calendars. Congratulations to our class champions for 2024! The results will be on the GCR website and special awards are planned. Remember, that if you run our AutoX series, you will need to compete in at least four of the seven events and hopefully beat your competitors. On a final note, we have loved serving the club as AutoX chair/registrar for the past 21 years. However, we really need some younger members who can take care of all the “before and after” event tasks, the biggest being equipment, maintenance and towing the trailer. We will be around to advise where needed, and hopefully the next team will be able to find a new AX venue in Dade Broward County.

Fellow GCR Member Needs a Kidney! Please consider getting tested to be a live kidney donor. You will save lives… including a fellow Porsche owner! Please help get Tim Hyland back to enjoying life and his Porsches. Longtime PCA member (20+ years), Tim Hyland has been dealing with a life-changing medical journey. It began as a kidney infection from COVID and rapidly progressed to stage 5/ end stage kidney failure. He is on dialysis for 11+ hours every night, dealing with extensive health issues, constant Doctor appointments and cannot work full-time. While he is on the National Kidney Registry, it is a 3-6 year waiting list for his O+ blood type but cannot wait that long. A living donor organ has a higher success and functions immediately after transplant. A live donor can be any sex, blood type and over the age of 18. Certain conditions exclude you from being a donor: cancer, chronic hypertension, autoimmune disease, diabetes and obesity. Testing is comprised of a phone call with the transplant team, stress test, CT scan, physical, blood work, and medical history doctor review. The tests serve as an excellent review of your overall health as well. If there are any unexpected expenses during the process, they will be handled by the Hyland Family Fund or Tim’s medical insurance coverages. If you are a good candidate and match, you would undergo a procedure and return to normal life in a few short days. Even if you have a different blood type, you can be matched with someone else in need of a kidney. In return, Tim will go to the top of the waiting list and receive a living kidney from another donor at the same time.

The Hylands before getting COVID

Fortunately, kidneys are the “organ with a spare” where everyone has two kidneys and the ability to resume a perfectly normal life with one healthy kidney. Tim simply wants to return to a normal life, good health, and care for his wife, Melissa, and their 15-year-old daughter Gracie. He and his family have enjoyed 20+ years of Porsche ownership. Tim ordered his Carrera 4S brand new in 2004 and it currently has 72,500 miles. He was fortunate to acquire a 1983 911 SC in 2011 with a unique race history and a featured car in an automotive book. Between drives, road trips, concours and 20+ years of track events through the East Coast and Canada, car clubs have been a great part of their lives. Tim has been a driving instructor since 2006 and involved in events for Audi, BMW, Porsche and Ferrari. After his transplant and recovery, Tim and his family look forward to a return to GCR events (in some form) and enjoy many of the events the club has to offer! Please scan this QR code or visit https://nkr.org/YJD332 to read more about Tim’s story and how you can become a donor. Please contact Tim for any questions at tmghyland@gmail.com. All donors receive support & protections through the National Kidney Registry. Details on the website.

Wynwood Mural Spotting

While heading for breakfast in Wynwood, Julián Montero spotted a fresh mural. He thought that the light and moment were spot-on for a memorable pic of his 1982 Targa. The “It’s Written in the Stars” mural by Claudia La Bianca makes a nice backdrop for his Venetian Blue Metallic Targa. Julián took this photo with a Samsung S6 phone that his kids say is ancient.
