FIRST TURN

Over the last couple of months, I have received several requests from members for information about our Escape event which is historically held around late August. Those that have attended and enjoyed this event in the past have noticed it missing from the calendar and rightfully inquired as to why it is missing. Since it has been a year since the last time the event was held and since we have many new members that haven’t had the Escape experience, I’ll take a moment to describe the event.

Simply put, Escape was a gathering of club members that came together for an epic drive to the West Coast of Florida with a one or two day stay at a large resort in Naples, Cape Coral or Sanibel Island. The event included a judged car show along with an event closing dinner. The average attendance for escape was around 300 members, with over 150 Porsches in attendance.

If the event was so successful, why are we not doing it this year? Well, we are a victim of our own success. As you can imagine, 300 plus participants puts a strain on the resort and our volunteers. The number of volunteers that are required to run the event is difficult to get and finding a resort that can handle the number of people and cars at a reasonable price is not easy. What is a reasonable price? We try to keep the price under $200 per person and I can tell you even out of season in Florida, it’s a struggle.

The second event that I got inquiries about is the South Florida Winterfest Boat Parade. For those not familiar with the event, it is a floatilla of boats decorated for the holidays cruising the Intercoastal Waterway. Even though we haven’t participated in several years it is still listed as one of the best events Gold Coast ever had. That year we took 130 members on board with open bar, music and dancing. I am in the process of looking for a boat with a capacity of at least 100 people. If you know of one, please let me know.

SHIFT INTO SOCIAL

The dog days of summer are in full swing as we enter the month of August. Hopefully you all are finding ways to stay cool and dry during this hot, humid and rainy summer season. On August 24, we have arranged for a bowling event in Tamarac. Rain or shine, no matter how hot it might be, it’s a good way to get out for some fun and friendly Porsche events..

If you have not yet been to one of the monthly socials, there are several to choose from around the region that could fit into almost anyone’s schedule. From the first Saturday and second Sunday Porsches & Pancakes, to the second Wednesday and Third Thursday socials, you are sure to find one near you. Or give your Porsche some exercise and take a drive to a social in another part of our region.

KEY STROKES

Parade, Parade, Parade!!!

Gold Coast Region was well represented at the PCA Parade this year as you will see in this month’s “Parade Issue.” The story begins on page 10 as told by Christy Spangler who brought home first and second place trophies.

Check out the Historic Display, Concours de Elegance and many more events that make up a Porsche Parade. As always, our members bring back several trophies as can be seen on page 13. If you have never attended a PCA National Parade, be sure to sign up for the next one in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Zone12 holds a Zonefest that is like a mini-Parade, a great way to practice for the PCA National Parade and meet other members from different Florida regions.

I hope you enjoyed last month’s “Look Back in GCR History.” These flashbacks are designed to help our new members learn more about our rich GCR history. On page 29, we also look back at two historical PCA Porsche moments in time that were very special and used for our Kassette covers. On the same page, we have a flyer to announce a special GCR bowling event.

Steve Kidd, who helped set up and work timing at the Autocross event, provides coverage on the Parade Autocross.

Our social committee provides an article about an outstanding Cars and Cigars event on page 14. Don’t miss out on the fun that our members are having at these very cool events.

Each month we introduce a special member in our Finding Gold article. Gold Coast has a lot of talent. We hope you enjoy our article about Jevon Olea this month.

Our Copy Editor, Lisa Cohen, shared a “From the Members” article about her adventure with a PCA club in California

A big thank you to Mark Johnson and his team for bringing back our Driver’s Education program with their second event for 2024. Many smiles from our drivers who can’t wait until the next event.

We are getting close to the GCR Election. Please read page 22 and contact Steve Kidd for more details. Enjoy the ride,

Since joining this wonderful club in 2013, I have found it to be a tremendous source of both social interaction and a treasure trove of information about our Porsches. Conversations often turn to the type of people who join PCA, so for this month’s article, I’ve put together a fun list of the types of members we attract. While most of us can identify with various aspects of the club and fit into multiple categories, here is how I see our membership breaking down. These are some typical characteristics and profiles of PCA Gold Coast Region members:

Car Enthusiasts: Many members are car enthusiasts who have a deep appreciation for automotive engineering and design. They love the precision, performance and history of Porsche cars and join the club to meet up and discuss all the intricate details with fellow enthusiasts.

Motorsport Fans: Some members are avid motorsport fans who participate in or follow racing events. They enjoy autocross, track days and other driving events organized by the club.

Collectors: While a smaller niche, there are members who collect Porsches as a hobby. These individuals often own multiple vehicles and are interested in rare and historically significant models.

Social Butterflies: PCA attracts people who enjoy the social aspects of the club. They appreciate the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals, attend social events and build friendships within the Porsche community.

Technical Tinkerers: Some members love to work on their cars and improve their performance. They join the PCA to access technical resources, workshops and expert advice on maintaining and modifying their Porsches.

Families: PCA is also familyfriendly, attracting members who enjoy involving their families in club activities. Family-oriented events and outings make it easy for all household members to participate.

Adventure Seekers: There are members who love adventure and the thrill of driving. They participate in driving tours, road rallies and longdistance journeys organized by the club.

Community-Oriented Individuals: Some members join PCA to give back to the community. The club often engages in charitable activities and community service, providing members with opportunities to make a positive impact.

In essence, anyone with a passion for Porsche, an interest in automotive culture or a desire to connect with a community of like-minded enthusiasts, can find a place within the PCA. The club offers something for everyone, whether you are interested in the technical aspects of the cars, the social scene or the thrill of driving. No matter what category you feel you fall into, or even if you don’t fit neatly into any of these, we always welcome and treasure our members. PORSCHE PARADE

Gold Coast Region Members take advantage of everything that Parade has to offer

Christy Spangler, Photos by the author, GCR members and PCA staff. Thank you to Stephen and Lynn Bamdas, Ira Bergman, Carolynn Ditrichs, Steve and Dottie Kidd, Mark and Jan Lachniet, Ernie and Raquel Revuelta, Lisa Zender and Steven Earnhart for contributing their photos and stories to this article.

The Porsche Parade is the annual convention of the PCA. This year’s location took place in Birmingham, Alabama from June 9-15 and it offered a variety of events that allowed one to truly enjoy their Porsche and socialize with enthusiasts from across the country.

Gold Coast Region members joined over 900 PCA members where they volunteered, participated and competed in nearly every activity - even picking up a few trophies.

The Westin Birmingham and the Sheraton Birmingham were the host hotels conveniently located across the street from the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex. On the other side of the hotels is the Birmingham City Walk, a 2-mile parklike walkway under the I-59/20 Central Business District Interstate bridges. Think of it as a shaded park. It was nice for the outdoor events and a unique setting for the Concours de Elegance.

The Concours de Elegance, Autocross, Time Speed Distance (TSD) and Gimmick Rallies, a 5K race and Sim Racing were examples of some of the competitive events. The vendor expo, hospitality and the Parade Goody Store were among the offerings located at the convention center. There were several tours to choose from with drives on scenic roads to interesting destinations organized by the local Alabama Region. Along with the banquets at the Sheraton Birmingham, there were organized off-site dinner options. PCA Juniors had several activities to participate and compete in, including the Hagerty Youth Judging at the Concours de Elegance and RC car racing. Finally, the must do activity was the Parade of Porsches. This year, around 300 Porsches were being escorted on a scenic drive to the track at Barber Motorsports Park.

The Historics Display celebrated the 60th Birthday of the 911 and Racing Liveries (left). Many, like Ira, worked hard at preparing their cars for the concours (top) while others, like Lisa, prepared by getting a custom manicure (right).

Rich in racing history, including Porsche racing, Birmingham had a lot to offer the Parade attendees. Parade took full advantage of the area with events at the beautiful Barber Motorsports Park, the Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum and the famous Talladega Superspeedway.

The Autocross took place at the Barber Motorsports Park Road Course and the Parade of Porsches included a parade lap around the picturesque track. The Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum was open to visitors and hosted an off-site dinner. This stunning museum boasts the largest motorcycle collection along with exquisite cars including an extensive Lotus collection. You can tell that George Barber appreciates the beauty and design of these vehicles by the way everything is both artfully and thoughtfully displayed.

A highlight to many were the parade laps at the famous Talladega Superspeedway, a 2.66-mile tri-oval course with 33° banking. The lead vehicle kept a quick pace and took the “high road” on the embankment allowing drivers and brave passengers to have that experience. The faces and smiles of those who did the laps showed just how much fun it was. Located at the Superspeedway is the International Motorsports Hall of Fame that houses historical artifacts in motorsports and celebrates the lives and accomplishments of the men and women who are the best of the best in motorsports.

Now that the 2024 PCA Parade is in the books, next year’s Parade will be in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma July 6-12, 2025.

TABACÓN CIGARS, OH… AND CARS

What

to do on a Sunday afternoon?

The parade was nearly over and it had been raining heavily for hours while the Florida Panthers celebrated their first Stanley Cup win in their 30 year history. Word is that nearly 400,000 fans lined US A1A along the beach in Ft. Lauderdale to cheer, party and savor a most incredible, perhaps improbable win in a series that went the distance.

With this party over, what then? Why not fire up a great stogie and carry on.

There may have been a few GCR members still living the hockey dream, but we assure you that quite a few Gold Coast fellows and spouses found their way to a very impressive Tabacón Cigars and Spirits in Doral on NW 87th Avenue to enjoy a cigar and talk Porsche.

The host for the afternoon was Jose Jimenez. The owner of Tabacón is a friend of Jose's. Both spirits flowed and smoke rose to the conversation of Porsches and the joy of living in South Florida, Miami and Doral, especially.

A cursory count of attendees indicated that there were about 30 total guests, both women and men gathered in the main lounge of the venue to enjoy the afternoon.

Tabacón is an impressive shop. There are three general areas to congregate, the main lounge and two smaller side rooms for discreet discussions. The humidor is large, well lit, and stocked with a substantial collection of cigars. Davidoff, Padrón, Macanudo, My Father and Romeo & Juliet were among the many available for the patrons.

Artwork by Ian Gerada

Within the facility itself were two well stocked bars that allowed attendees to select their favorite beverage to complement their cigar of choice.

Of course, several of the ladies in attendance partook in the merriment, including the sampling of a cigar or two. Conversations drifted between the Panthers to the recent GCR Driver Education day at Homestead, to rugby, air cooled versus water cooled Porsches, and even, “what’s for dinner.” Tabacón is located among a modern shopping and dining complex. Several members intended to sample the local fare following the afternoon gathering.

To say the event was well received would not do the day justice. With two locations, Doral and Plantation, Tabacón could easily become a quarterly social event for a Sunday afternoon, while alternating between the north and south facilities. Our Social Chair, Christy Spangler, will be examining those options.

Bottom line, although it was extremely wet to be out celebrating the CATS and the CUP it was a perfect afternoon to smoke ‘em. At Tabacón with our Gold Coast friends, we had plenty of great smokes to enjoy.

A lovely bar, filled with favorites

Jevon Olea… Talents Abound

From music, to cars, to photos, plus an all-around great guy!

Jevon Olea is one talented individual. The more we learn about him, the more impressive an individual he becomes. There are quite a few things that fit right into our Porsche community that makes us very happy that he is a South Florida resident and a multi-Porsche owner. Where do we start?

Where words fail, music speaks. Let’s begin with a guitar and a song. Jevon is a talented musician. He sings, plays rhythm and bass guitar and keyboards. In fact, he is a proud member of two bands that are comprised of Porsche owners. Perhaps you have experienced, or have heard about, the Lufts and the Outlaws. Jevon serves both groups, and each band member is a Porsche owner. How fortunate it is that his talents are shared between these two entities.

The Lufts came together first. A few Vintage Vices members were in a garage for an adult beverage and Porsche chat.

The guys noted musical instruments in the garage, and each shared their respective talent for specific instruments. This led to a “jam session,” then another and another, until the group felt their quality and their style emerge.

and Juana Olea

With the Lufts shaping into form, several other Vintage Vices members expressed an interest in forming a second band. The Outlaws were established, adding their last member days before their first show on the DRT stage last January. Musical selections and playlists differed by band, but the quality of their musical talent was evident. At the center of both groups stood Jevon.

The Outlaws had a need for a lead guitarist. Jevon invited a non-Porsche buddy and mate from yet another band, Alejandro “Nanu” E Hernández Padilla, to play. Nanu wasn’t a Porsche owner at the time. With Jevon’s guidance and a bit of encouragement from all the band guys, he bought a Guards Red Boxster (from Jevon of course) and hasn’t looked back. Nanu Padilla is now a Gold Coast Region (GCR) member, and he plays a killer

lead solo guitar. We never know where our members are going to come from, but it is certainly awesome to have the organic growth and the talents within our midst. A new GCR member through music. Thank you, Jevon.

Both bands were invited by Alvaro Rodriguez to play at DRT in January. The debut was very successful. Gold Coast Region followed up this initial show by bringing the Lufts to

Jevon

Jevon Olea's 997 Carrera Cabriolet in a classic South Florida pose play at Schnebly Winery – Miami Brewing Company, in the Redlands. “Porsche Rocks” drew upwards of 100 attendees and roughly 75-80 Porsches. Jevon was front and nearly center with band mates. It was a great playlist, executed enthusiastically.

(NOTE: The June Porsche Panorama features a photo of the event in the FROM THE REGIONS section, p.116.)

The musical camaraderie evolved from his Porsche relationships, but what about the cars themselves? Jevon currently owns two great classics. The first is a 997 Carrera S Cabriolet in Cobalt Blue. The second is a 1983 944 in Gold, and affectionately known as Peanut.

Peanut the 944 was recently seen in the filming of a music video for the artist The Kid Laroi. Kid Laroi first shot to worldwide fame alongside Justin Bieber with their single, “Stay.” Laroi needed a unique vehicle as a prop for the video and the 944 Peanut was selected. Peanut, the transaxle Porsche, was front and center. Note: As of early July, the music video “GIRLS” had amassed more than 2.5 million views in just a few days of release. That’s’ incredible exposure for the 944 Peanut.

Enjoying the sights and sounds of the musical scene and seeing his Peanut sitting in front of the camera, Jevon also shares his talents from behind the lens. Photography is the latest hobby in which he excels. He picked up a camera in 2023.

Applying his learning skills, he is constantly refining his through-thelens vision and knowledge of aperture, shutter speeds and such. Jevon carries his Nikon to many group gatherings and high-performance driving events. He attended both the recent Gold Coast DE’s and DRT track days. The goal: to capture his friends at play on the HMS road course, and while relaxing in the garages and paddock.

Away from HMS, Jevon has “shot” quite a few cars at the endless locations in South Florida known for enhancing the sensuous lines of a 911. During a simple gathering at Imperial Moto for a Saturday coffee, Jevon seems to find different and alluring angles of the people who attend and their Porsches.

Jevon Olea is originally from the Philippines and currently lives in Coral Gables, FL. He is happily married to Ms. Juana Tovar. Their relationship totals 18 years. He is a Financial Service Professional, yet this is a relatively new occupation. He recently took over his mother’s entire financial service practice when she retired. He assumed her entire book of business earlier this year. Prior to that Jevon served as the Clinical Director and Vice President of Community and Business Development for a large family of companies. The group is active in the delivery of care to children with special needs and chronic disabilities.

Kid Laroi video shoot, the Car, the Kid, and the Girl

Jevon has owned a total of four Porsche vehicles. The first was a 1999 996 that was purchased through an online auction, as an accident. He placed a “ridiculously low” bid on the car, and he ended up winning. It was his first introduction to Porsche.

Eventually, he sold that car to one of his very close friends and BMW buddy, Byron Medina. Byron owns a shop, Motor Method in southwest Miami. They knew each other through BMW (Jevon owns a couple of Bimmers as well) and the car became Byron’s introduction to Porsche. The second PCar was the 2001 986 Porsche Boxster S in Guards Red. This is the car that now sits in Nanu’s driveway. That’s two close friends that are driving Porsches because he sold them each a car. Both have become part of GCR.

The current Porsche stable as noted previously, are the 1983 944 Peanut, and his 997 Carrera S Cabrio. It is interesting to hear the back stories on both recent acquisitions. In early 2023 the 997 found its way to his garage through a friend who is a sales manager and worked at Ferrari of Miami. This pal knew Jevon saw the 997 generation 911 as a favorite.

The Ferrari dealership took this Cobalt Blue 997 Cabrio in as a trade, but they did not want to keep the car despite it being in mint condition. The friend/ sales manager called Jevon and sold him the car at cost.

Within a couple weeks the 997 was participating at HMS on the track during a Performance Driving Group HPDE.

Later that year, Jevon was at the GCR DE at Homestead with the 997, photographing friend’s cars as they enjoyed the track. One subject was Christy Spangler in her 1985 944, Shadow. Jevon had been introduced to the 944 a couple years ago by Captain Bobby Walters, so the fire was lit by the Captain, and the embers began to glow seeing Christy navigate HMS.

He will drive the Porsches everywhere. They go to music performances, the office, they carry the camera for photographic work and they travel outof-state on various drives.

The small burn became a fully stoked blaze as Jevon Olea followed his friend, JC Muniz (a Lufts band mate), around the twisted roads of North Carolina during an annual Vintage Vices Targa road rally. Of course, JC was piloting his white 944 S2, and that was all it took. Time to acquire a transaxle Porsche. Throughout this journey, Jevon was being poked and prodded by yet another friend, JR Cross, who himself is a skilled transaxle guy. Friends with Porsches, yep!

Combined with a few BMWs, a Mercedes-Benz, a vintage Toyota 4Runner and the recently acquired taste of Porsche, one might get the idea that besides being a musician, photographer, financial services professional, that he might also be considered a car guy.

His all-time favorite Porsche is the 356, immediately followed by the 912. If he was to be pushed on a modern Porsche 911, it’s a toss-up between the 964 and 997.

He prefers his cars in stock form to preserve the car’s reliability and heritage.

Before owning a Porsche, he was a very active member of the Miami Bimmer Club, but he always admired the brand. Never expecting to own a PCar, it was when he accidentally bought the 996 and it was dropped off from the delivery truck, was when he became fully hooked. (That, and Captain Bobby knows how and where to fish…) He drives the Porsches way more than the BMW’s today.

Within our Region, he is just starting to find his legs and involvement. It commenced with Vintage Vices, the Air & Water group and other local entities. He joined Gold Coast during 2021. As a PCA member, he has challenged folks from the BMW community to experience Porsche ownership.

Jevon enjoys it all. “PCar ownership has been a gift that keeps on giving!” We would certainly agree, Jevon. Your talents as a financial service professional, Clinical Director/VP, multi-instrument musical professional, photographer and simply a great, humble, and sincere man is a gift to us all.

Adventures of PCA Membership FROM THE MEMBERS

When I joined the Porsche Club of America Gold Coast Region, little did I know that there are 148 regions around the country, and technically, I would become a member of all the regions as part of the PCA membership. Just to elaborate, if you are in another city/ state and have access to a Porsche, you can participate in one of their events if they are doing a drive or rally. As a frequent visitor to the Los

Angeles area and having access to a 2009 Porsche 911 4S, I decided to check out PCA LA last month. They had breakfast at Café on 27 in Topanga, CA followed by a drive which was scheduled during my visit. I decided to book a spot.

Upon arrival, I was immediately greeted by Dilun Wu, the social director, who introduced me to the other members along with the president, Steve Nguyen, who was very welcoming. The food and views of the canyon were amazing.

Following breakfast, we all took off for a fun and exciting cruise through the canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains. The mountains have 36 miles of trails, and the elevation goes up to almost 13,000 feet. Views captured from the mountains of the

San Fernando Valley and the Pacific Ocean were breathtaking. Long and very winding roads were quite different and sometimes challenging compared to our Florida roadways. (I’m thinking of a DE class prior to another canyon run).

This was a memorable visit with new Porsche friends and I’m looking forward to more adventures with the PCA members. “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.”

These two Porsches, 25 years apart in age, were both treated with Permagard Automotive. Can likely will not. That’s what Permagard can do for your Porsche. It can take a 1998 Carrera S or a 2023 Carrera S, and make them both shine like Permagard acts as a durable, sacrificial layer that is added on top of your original paint to protect 100% of the paint’s thickness over its lifespan. Permagard’s added layer, combined with 100% of your paint’s thickness, is what gives that Permagard is famous for. Our competitors require wet sanding, compounding, and clay barring before their products can be applied. All of these processes remove layers of your original paint, therefore, reducing its thickness. Using our competitors’ products will result in reduced depth of gloss and protection, as the paint you are trying to protect will get thinner and thinner over time. Choose Permagard if you want to durably protect 100% of your depth of gloss. Call our Permagard Headquarters today at (305) 662-5070, to experience the Permagard your beautiful Porsche!

HELP WANTED GCR Autocross Chair

After 20 + years of running the AutoX program, we are looking to retire, most likely sometime in 2025. Dottie and I will be looking to train and mentor the next generation of AutoX chair and registrar. Please contact us if you have an interest in being trained and possibly carrying the AutoX torch in the years to come. Over the next few months, I will cover some of the most pressing situations that future AutoX managers will face. This Month, Equipment-Part 1, which will talk about the AutoX trailer. Next month I’ll discuss timing equipment. Towing and maintenance of the trailer has always fallen on the plate of the AutoX chair which can be time consuming, especially if the chair is also participating as a driver. I would suggest that in the future, alternative ways be explored to deal with the trailer. The trailer contains most of the things needed to run an AutoX!

Please contact AX Chair Steve Kidd at 954-292-3915

Please contact editor Roger Fabel at rfabel@aol.com for details.

DRIVERS EDUCATION

Takin’ it to the Track

The first DE of this year occurred a few weeks ago, Saturday June 22, at our “home track,” Homestead-Miami Speedway (HMS). It was a great day overall, with a little sprinkle of rain and a ton of South Florida sunshine, heat and humidity. Looking at the general numbers, we had a total of 95 participants of which there were 41 novice and intermediate drivers, 26 soloists (no instructors in the car) and 28 instructors..

Last fall on September 16, the Gold Coast Region High-Performance Driver Education (HPDE/DE) was considered a very successful event. While only one event can’t establish a trend, it certainly painted a target for future events. With improvement in mind, the GCR HPDE team made a few adjustments and scheduled two DE track days for the 2024 calendar year.

Virtually everyone went home in the same fashion as when they arrived with bodies and cars undamaged and perhaps a bit tired. This DE offered a total of 16 sessions on the track for the four run groups (novice, intermediate, solo and instructor). There were NO INCIDENTS (accidents) during the event, although there were a couple of spins and a BMW that experienced a corrupted engine that dropped a bit of oil on the track

Participants were treated to a catered lunch by Levy Restaurants, exclusive food and beverage supplier to HMS. Levy and GCR provided bottled water all day which was much needed in the heat. In the last issue of the Kassette (July 2024), we recognized our five major sponsors, and we will highlight them again: ZWECK, 4Corner Tire Shop and Auto Repair, TUNERS, KMW Motorsports and Dr. Color Chip. Thanks, one and all.

We also identified our instructors in the July issue and wish to acknowledge their incredible support for this June event. Instructors are

the absolute key to building our program as we now have so many new DE participants who wish to drive. We have a very limited supply of instructors. In fact, there were 12 instructors for June who shared their skills with two student drivers for the day. Kudos to each of these guys who car-hopped between their green and blue students.

Track day administration and operations were improved from the September event. With the experience of two DEs there are several areas of opportunity for consideration. The team is not as smooth as the Suncoast events at Sebring, or as compared to the many professional drive groups. Yet, enhancements are being made on the re-build of the Gold Coast DE program. It’s a work in progress.

Our Porsches ran extremely well. We held a Parade Lap session at lunch which raised funds for the Ronald McDonald House Charity (Noemi & Nestor Sanchez as organizers). Quite a few photos have been posted to the Gold Coast Region Group Facebook by Ian Gerada, Jevon Olea and others. The photos on these pages are courtesy of Ian, Jevon and George Plucienkowski.

Challenges aside, there were many smiling faces at the end of Saturday June 22. We expect to see quite a few more friends later this year on September 29 at HMS. Porsche Club of America HPDE programs are a great way to enjoy your car in a safe and controlled environment. Get out and DRIVE!

Autocross Update... Parade Issue

While AutoX in South Florida generally comes to a halt during the hot summer months, other areas of the country use this time to put their AutoX programs into high gear. This is especially true for the Porsche Parade, where AutoX is one of the premier events and spans two full days.

This year, the Porsche Parade was held in Birmingham, Alabama at the Barber Motorsport Complex on a huge lot with a banked section from June 8-15. The AutoX was June 12-13. At the Parade level, AutoX competition can be intense, especially in the stock classes that continue to be the largest & most popular classes.

This year was no exception, and I invite you to check out the Parade Website to see great pictures of the AutoX event, as well as results from both days of competition. Zone 12 was well represented with most regions having at least one AutoX participant. Gold Coast Region had four AutoX entrants (Ernie Revuelta, Christy Spangler, Carolynn Ditrichs and Steve Kidd) All won 1st place or 2nd place trophies in their classes.

Parade course map

The course was quite technical, with most times being under 60 seconds. To compete at Parade level, competitors need to carefully read the rules, know the correct class and understand that an incorrect class or rule infraction could result in a protest and possible disqualification. Here are a few other differences that make the Parade AutoX different from local events.

Big name sponsors, including Michelin Tires

Lots of classes and competition... usually close to 200 participants Very structured and lots of volunteer help

A pre-event class for novices and instructor led course walks for everyone

A professional photographer on site to take lots of free pictures An awards banquet to present trophies, give awards and chill with fellow competitors

Great trophies...see pictures on page 13...all parade trophies are ones you really want to show off

So... Who’s ready to try Parade style AutoX next year in Oklahoma City? Stayed tuned for more 2025 Parade info

So, what does it take to put on an AutoX of this magnitude? Three key words might be talent, teamwork and tenacity. Hats off to Paul Kudra,

Parade course after setup

PCA National AutoX chair and Parade AutoX chair who assembled a “dream team” of regional AutoX chairs and experienced staff from all over the country. Dottie and I played key roles both in the planning and execution of this Parade AutoX, working together with a great group of volunteers.

Dottie was asked to be AutoX worker captain, which meant she assigned worker positions to everyone and made sure this important function ran smoothly. Her work started weeks before the actual event with diagrams, pre-assignments and logistics.

Autocross Timing Command

I was asked to help with course setup and back-up timer for the timing system. I also had to run the afternoon timing shift. Luckily, PCA national uses

the exact same timing program and equipment as GCR has been using for years. Probably the most “fun” work assignment I had was doing the novice course walks with the beginners and later watching them test their new knowledge on the course. Since I was working the timing console, I could see their improvement and smiles.

Tentative AutoX schedule for the remainder of 2024

Event # 6 Tentative September 15 at Sebring... scheduled for but not confirmed for Sunday, Sept.15... Watch for an email

Event # 7 October 19 at St Lucie Fairgrounds. ...This may be our last event as GCR AutoX chair and registrar, except for possibly the 2025 club race AutoX

Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change due to weather, availability and factors beyond our control.

News, reminders and 2024 updates: Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all AutoX photos & results.

Porsche classes are loosely based on medium size Porsche club regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only.

Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed.

Our 2024 series is planned to be five to seven events, depending on site eligibility. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In the case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented.

No passengers except for an approved AutoX instructor driving or in the car instructing.

Questions? Call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196

Final Note...Please see the help wanted ad on (page 24)… After 21 years, we are retiring and need a few good folks to take over.

PHOTO FINISH

What Happened to Your Wing?

Jonathan Brownfield Biggs submitted this photo of his 2022 992 911 GT3 Touring. He picked it up in April this year from Porsche Naples and shares this story about his trip home.

I have had a few Porsches with loud colors in my youth, including most recently, a Speed Yellow 986 Boxster S and a Racing Yellow 718 GT4. However, now that I have a son and I am no longer doing track days, I wanted a weekend car that could fly under the radar and be more suitable for an “old man” to drive. I looked no further than a wingless 992 911 GT3, aka a GT3 Touring. I could barely contain my excitement on delivery day, so much so that I had to pull over at a rest stop to pee on my way home from the dealer, Porsche Naples. Upon my return, I found a small bird seemingly inspecting my GT3 in the rest stop parking lot and presumably saying, “What happened to your wing?”

If you look to the bottom left of Jonathan’s GT3 Touring in the photograph, you will see that the little bird is definitely checking out his Porsche.

Jonathan took this photo on an iPhone 14 Pro.
