FIRST TURN
Peter Olliviere , President
Many members have been asking about the upcoming PORSCHES IN THE PARK, VETERANS DAY CONCOURS, and I haven’t been able to give a definitive answer.
Well, things have firmed up and I can now say that the show is on. We will celebrate Veterans Day one day early this year on Sunday, November 10 in Plantation Heritage Park, City of Plantation and we will be honoring our veterans that have served our country.
The Gold Coast Region will be holding a concours for Porsche cars with each car judged within its class and
with trophies awarded by class and to overall show winners.
The concours will have a Veterans Day theme with special attention paid to our own Gold Coast Region veterans. Proceeds will be donated to the Honor Flight Network that provides flights for aging veterans to be honored in Washington DC. We are also trying to put together a Parade of the cars coming into the park with each carrying a veteran and decorated with the American flag.
In addition, if you are a veteran and would like to be included in our
Kassette Magazine edition featuring Gold Coast Region veterans, you may email your information along with a photo of you with your Porsche to Rfabel@aol.com
We are in the process of establishing the entry classes and putting them into club registration. As soon as that task is complete the event will be open on club registration. Keep a lookout for the notification of that accruing and make sure you are a part of the Gold Coast Region honoring its veterans.

TURBO CHRONICLES II
A Spectacular Evening for PCA Gold Coast Region
Article by Ian Garada
On the evening of July 20, our members gathered at the Fort Lauderdale Executive Jet Center for the second Turbo Chronicles event. With an impressive turnout of over 250 attendees, the evening was a testament to our vibrant club and their shared passion for Porsche vehicles.
Jet Tours and More
The event kicked off with exclusive jet tours, giving members a unique opportunity to explore sleek, highperformance aircraft. We also enjoyed whiskey tasting from two vendors while permanent jewelry was available. Attendees were treated to hors d’oeuvres, beer, wine and the upbeat sounds of DJ Richard, creating an exciting evening for all.
Grand Raffle Announcement
The highlight of the event was the announcement of the second place prize winner of the 2024 PCA Raffle.
The crowd erupted in applause as Manny Sanchez’s name was announced as the lucky recipient of a brand new 2024 Macan E and a cash prize of $25,000. This thrilling moment was covered by Channel 10 TV, adding a touch of celebrity to the event.
Technical Panel Discussion and Live Demonstrations
Many attendees enjoyed the technical panel discussion focusing on turbo vehicles. Industry experts shared insights into the engineering marvels and performance intricacies that make turbo Porsches a favorite among enthusiasts. Bobby Varela provided a live demonstration of a Macan S performance upgrade installation. His in-depth knowledge and hands-on approach provided valuable learning experiences for all attendees.
Recognition of Our Sponsors
Turbo Chronicles wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of our sponsors: SSF Imported Auto Parts, KMW Motorsports, Connectica Digital Marketing, Porsche Design, Permagard, Foreign Affairs Motorsport and ZWECK. All had a significant presence at the event. Their contributions and active participation were greatly appreciated, and we thank them for their continued commitment to the PCA Gold Coast Region.
Special Acknowledgments
Special thanks to Fort Lauderdale Executive Jet Center for hosting us at their exquisite venue. Their hospitality and excellent facilities contributed significantly to the event’s success. We also extend our gratitude to Paul Laya and Ed Blair who facilitated the parking of over 125 Porsches on a limited space airport ramp.
Culinary Delights and Socializing
Guests enjoyed a delicious variety of appetizers, beautifully arranged alongside a complimentary beer and wine bar. The whiskey tasting station was a popular spot throughout the evening, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and enjoyment.
Event Coordination
The success of Turbo Chronicles can be attributed to the dedicated efforts of the PCA Gold Coast Region “Chronicles” team. Bobby Varela, Vanessa Varela and Jane Gerada worked behind the scenes to organize and execute this memorable event.
For those who missed it, we invite you to join us at our upcoming events. Stay tuned for more information and relive the highlights of Turbo Chronicles through the photos and Channel 10’s coverage linked below.
Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to making Turbo Chronicles an unforgettable evening. Here’s to many more events filled with passion, learning and Porsche excellence!
The Legacy of Porsche Concours d’Elegance
Article by Alicia Laya
Automotive excellence has long been an engineering and aesthetic combination.
This combination is the theme of great celebrations, exhibits and trophies that are presented at the Concours d’Elegance and typically at our annual Porsche Parades.
The Concours d’Elegance blends both tradition and legacy. This story explores how it became a symbol of status. Its rich history and lasting significance of this distinguished event explores how it has shaped the community of Porsche enthusiasts and the automotive world at large.
The term Concours d’Elegance, dates to 17th-century France, at first a parade of horse-drawn carriages to show off their craftsmanship in the parks of Paris.
The craftsmen of that time were showing off a daring experimental society display. With the age of industrial geniuses who replaced the carriage, the event evolved, becoming a celebration of automotive beauty and design.
By the mid-20th century, Concours d’Elegance had pretty much set itself as a prestigious event, attracting the finest automobiles and the most respected car collectors.
Porsche, a symbol of engineering precision and timeless design, naturally found its place, within the Concours d’Elegance circles. The brand’s participation in these events began around the postwar timeframe, when Porsches gained popularity not only for some of this, but also for their performance appeal.
One of the earliest Porsches to receive top honors at a Concours d’Elegance was in the 1950s where the Porsche 356 – one of Porsche’s earliest models – began to gain a following for its beautiful lines and elegance.
These competitions became more elaborate over time. The 911 series helped to bump up the brand prominence in the Concours. The 911, with its unique silhouette and engineering power, became a frequent champion not just because of its speed but because of its timeless beauty.
Porsche’s ability to become a Concours d’Elegance winner is not just a tale of what Porsche has done, but also about the prestige of being part of the Concours.
National PCA Concours Judging at the 2003 Parade in Tampa co-hosted by Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions. Photos by Roger Fabel
Porsche clubs around the world have played a big role in maintaining and showcasing the heritage. These clubs organize their own Concours events, where members bring their meticulously maintained and restored vehicles to be judged on various criteria, including originality, condition, and presentation.
Founded in 1955, the Porsche Club of America (PCA) has been the most active of the vintage clubs. The Porsche Club of America’s annual Porsche Parade includes a Concours d’Elegance as part of the agenda. It is a great event and is an important date on the calendar for Porsche aficionados.
The judging process is more than just looks even though a sports car’s appearance is a required component of winning a Concours d’Elegance. Judges are looking at the originality of the car and the quality of the restoration (if it’s a restoration). Original and authentic winning Porsches are not only those that are carefully restored, but also have a story to tell.
Take, for example, the paintwork which needs to be perfect visually, with a factory-like interior and the engine bay must be immaculate.
Over the years, several famous Porsche wins, and celebrated models include the Porsche 356, particularly the Speedster, which has been a favorite due to its classic design and historical significance. Then the 959 followed by Porsche 911, especially early models such as the 911S and the Carrera RS, have also been regular winners.
Porsche’s first fully electric sports car, the Taycan, has already been nominated for its styling, design and innovation. The day is not far off when we will see these electric models compete and maybe even win at these prestigious events.
Whether it’s a classic 356, a milestone 959, 911 or the latest Taycan, the Porsche Concours d’Elegance is more than just a beauty contest. It is a celebration of the brand’s legacy, the Porsche enthusiast’s devotion, and the mystique of Porsche design. One thing remains for sure: Porsche will continue in the world of Concours d’Elegance. At the same time, every new model represents more than just another pretty face. It is adding to the brand and unique history. The Porsche Concours d’Elegance: Legendary excellence for generations to come.
We are looking forward to a Concours event coming in November. This year it will be Porsches in the Park, with a Veterans Day theme concours. The event will be at Heritage Park in Plantation.
Please be on the lookout for more information to follow.
FINDING GOLD
David Lehman, one Porsche, twin sons, a lovely wife!
A
personal dream with the OK from his wife becomes a GCR Porsche family…
Member Feature by Mark Johnson
David Lehman is a lifelong South Florida resident, a true Floridian. He grew up in Miami during the “80s” with a love of cars and that’s where his fascination with Porsche began.
In 1987, while working at a wellestablished audio/video hi-fi store, he frequently worked with well-heeled customers who were upgrading the stereo systems in their Lambos, Ferraris and of course Porsche autos. Occasionally, the company president would visit the location in his black 911 Turbo. It was the one vehicle with the greatest appeal to David. Exotic, yes – of course, but most definitely a “driver’s” car. The black Turbo became part of his boyhood dream. Although he really did not think of buying one, he was simply content to admire them.
Twenty-two years later, it was Mrs. Laurel Lehman who uttered those incredible words, “Why don’t you just buy the 911 already?” With such an open invitation from Laurel, the final bit of resistance to Porsche ownership was removed. It was during the beginning of Covid in early 2020.
The Porsche David bought is a 2017 Carrera S in Graphite Blue Metallic. David had been studying and learning everything possible about the 911 for many years. He did not plan to buy the Carrera S at the time as both his and Laurel’s careers were somewhat challenging, and they were raising twin boys. It was a tumultuous time, so when Laurel gave David the green light, it was quite a display of trust and love.
David and Laurel have been married for seventeen “blissful” years. She is a pediatric physician assistant. He has worked in the pharmaceutical industry for over twenty-five years. After starting as a sales representative in the home and car audio/video field, he knew that sales were going to be the general path of his career. He also enjoyed computers, which led him to Florida State University where he graduated with a degree in computer science. The computer arena was ultimately not a fit, but the sales experience took root and he transitioned into pharmaceutical, educating medical professionals about new and innovative therapeutics and the illnesses they treat. Today, he works on the commercial side of a rare disease biotech company.
The Lehmans currently reside in Weston, FL. They were engaged on a trip to Jamaica and held their destination wedding in the Bahamas. It is a tropical love story. After living in Aventura for several years, the move to Weston gave them a bit more room
for their growing family. Their twin sons, Jared and Shane, are 11 years of age and have started to enjoy the opportunities afforded to boys of preteen years, these being sports, music lessons and talking about favorite subjects. Jared is a weather “junkie” following the tropics, hurricanes and tornadoes. His goal is to become a pilot. Shane is known by mom and dad as “our affectionate charmer.” His personality is brightly lit, and he will talk football endlessly.
When not at tennis practice, cultural entertainment or guitar lessons, the boys are frequently seen hanging out with David at many of our Gold Coast events. Porsche and Pancakes are always a winner, as is attending the big shows like DRT. Jared and Shane are getting a firm education about Porsche as they grow towards their individual futures with automobiles. David is enjoying every moment and assisting them in furthering their Porsche & general automotive knowledge.
Many of our GCR members have multiple PCars in their garages, or even larger and substantial collections of Porsche autos. David, father of a young family, has just one, but it is a very sweet ride. The Carrera S is tastefully modified as he has been making little enhancements to the vehicle. While many upgrades have been cosmetic, David has personally installed a Softronic ECU tune that increased engine performance by roughly 100 HP. He also installed a SOUL exhaust, which completely improved the character and sound
of an already glorious sport exhaust which was a factory feature. Additionally, David has added a Numeric Racing Short Shifter (YES, it is a manual transmission – a must for David), Dynamic Suspension Control that upgrades the PASM, Eibach ProKit springs and wheel spacers. Each “improvement” was carefully installed by David in his garage.
David recently participated in his first high-performance driver education event with Gold Coast. Apparently, he had not given much thought to stopping performance despite the increased HP from the Softronic ECU tune. His factory brakes performed well, but he was quickly educated about brake limitations, extreme use and braking technique for tracking his Porsche. Brake upgrades will be the next item on the upgrade list. Following improved stopping power, his wish list includes intake air-flow improvements, coil-over shock absorbers, bigger turbos, better seats and perhaps nicer wheels. Whew!
He loves to tinker and challenge himself allowing his Porsche passion to grow. David believes that “these cars are mechanical masterpieces right off the assembly line, but the opportunities for customization, personalization and improvement seem endless.” Simply, David loves tinkering with his car. He shares this enjoyment with others and has even created a DIY channel on YouTube for his adventures. He freely admits that his skills as a DIY tech are rudimentary as with his talents as a videographer. His videos are raw, lightly edited and generally shot in one take. These basic tech skills and film making talents lend to a, “if he can do it, I can do it,” offering individuals motivation to get
their hands dirty and take on a job themselves.
He’s anticipating a trip to the North Carolina and Tennessee mountains which are the location of so many great driving roads, highlighted by the famed Tail of The Dragon. That trip will happen this coming October with a few of his Porsche pals. The Porsche brotherhood is strong and has helped guide him to the track and to stretch into the challenging mountain roads. With a couple of DE’s and The Dragon checked off the bucket list, he finds it hard to believe that he’s experienced these driving challenges and thrills in a very short period.
His 991.2 is his favorite Porsche. Not suggesting that the 356 or the 917, 962 or Carrera GT aren’t special, David finds himself comfortable in his Porsche. The Carrera S is a nicer and better performing 911 than all the others he grew up admiring over the years. When pressed, he will admit that the dream of owning a newer 911 has slipped, but the potential of adding an air-cooled Porsche to the garage has grown.
David has not made many of the large events such as Parade, Werks or the Rennsport Reunion, but those will be considered as time and the family allow. He has been to PEC
Atlanta twice. Both visits were after he acquired his car. Not surprisingly, David chose to drive a Porsche like his rather than a higher performance vehicle to gain personal confidence with the car he owns. A professional instructor teaching him to get the most out of his car is the goal, and this aligns well with the Gold Coast HPDE driving events.
David joined PCA Gold Coast soon after he bought his car in 2020. He wanted the, “full experience and benefits of PCA membership.” In and around our club, David has made multiple connections within the Porsche community. The friendships and activities have been “priceless,” which commensurate with the cars and people mantra.
He considers owning and driving a 911 to be a privilege. One earned through hard work no doubt, but also through the love and support from his wife and sons. David feels blessed to have been able to share his journey in Porsche with his father who recently accompanied him to the Homestead DE. Laurel, Jared, Shane and their fur baby Beatty, the 3-year-old Aussie rescue mix, round out a family.
Enjoying the Porsche community, David finds the unique and exciting opportunities offered by a car marque incredible. These traits match his energy and curiosity.
David was humbled when asked to share his Porsche journey. Laurel and their sons have contributed greatly to his passion and embrace it, almost as their own. “It’s a Family Affair,” right Sly Stone?
David, enjoy the drive. Glad to have you along with our little group, and thanks for bringing the family. We trust the road will be open and inviting for years to come.

These two Porsches, 25 years apart in age, were both treated with Permagard Automotive. Can likely will not. That’s what Permagard can do for your Porsche. It can take a 1998 Carrera S or a 2023 Carrera S, and make them both shine like Permagard acts as a durable, sacrificial layer that is added on top of your original paint to protect 100% of the paint’s thickness over its lifespan. Permagard’s added layer, combined with 100% of your paint’s thickness, is what gives that Permagard is famous for. Our competitors require wet sanding, compounding, and clay barring before their products can be applied. All of these processes remove layers of your original paint, therefore, reducing its thickness. Using our competitors’ products will result in reduced depth of gloss and protection, as the paint you are trying to protect will get thinner and thinner over time. Choose Permagard if you want to durably protect 100% of your depth of gloss. Call our Permagard Headquarters today at (305) 662-5070, to experience the Permagard your beautiful Porsche!

HELP WANTED GCR Autocross Chair
After 20 + years of running the AutoX program, we are looking to retire, most likely sometime in 2025. Dottie and I will be looking to train and mentor the next generation of AutoX chair and registrar. Please contact us if you have an interest in being trained and possibly carrying the AutoX torch in the years to come. Over the next few months, I will cover some of the most pressing situations that future AutoX managers will face. This Month, Equipment-Part 1, which will talk about the AutoX trailer. Next month I’ll discuss timing equipment. Towing and maintenance of the trailer has always fallen on the plate of the AutoX chair which can be time consuming, especially if the chair is also participating as a driver. I would suggest that in the future, alternative ways be explored to deal with the trailer. The trailer contains most of the things needed to run an AutoX!
Please contact AX Chair Steve Kidd at 954-292-3915
Please contact editor Roger Fabel at rfabel@aol.com for details.

Election Bios - Officers
Born in Miami, Florida, in 1972, I was fortunate to grow up with a father who was a factory-trained Porsche technician. His passion for Porsche and dedication to performance was infectious. At 16, I proudly owned my first Porsche, a black 944, and have since also owned a Porsche 911 and a Boxster.
With over 35 years in the European automotive industry, I have worked with renowned companies like Eckler’s Industries as a Porsche Tech, Champion Motorsport as Service Director, and Foreign Affairs Motorsport as General Manager.
I have been a proud PCA member since the early 1990s and have received awards such as Rookie of the Year in 1993, Sonnenfest overall winner in 1994, and Enthusiast and Family of the Year in 1995.
My involvement with the Gold Coast Region (GCR) has been extensive, serving as a Board of Director, Membership Chairman, and Social and Club Race Volunteer Chairman. I spearheaded GCR’s largest membership drive, contributed to the launch of the now magazine-styled Die Porsche Kassette, and organized events like Stone Crab Drives, Collier Museum Tours, Tech Sessions, Oktoberfest, and the Porsche Chronicles series.
As a National PCA instructor and previous autocross champion, I have had the privilege of instructing and racing at tracks such as Sebring, Homestead, Road Atlanta, and Roebling Road.
I am running for the position of Vice-President because I believe my over 30 years of experience in volunteering and supporting GCR with new members will benefit the club for years to come. I am committed to fostering a vibrant and inclusive community, ensuring that all members have opportunities to engage and enjoy their passion for Porsche.
Maxfield (Max) Wiseltier is from upstate New York (Catskills) and spent most of his life in New York City. His first word was “car” and has loved Porsches from a very young age, as his dad would tell him stories of his beloved 911s, 911t, and 914-6. Max attended the NYU Stern School of Business for his Undergraduate and MBA degrees. After working at several startups in NYC, he began building his career in real estate and finance. Max worked in residential brokerage for four years and spent three years in investment analysis in hospitality. Max now works in tech strategy at Lennar, the Miami-based homebuilder.
After moving to Miami in 2022, he dove into the automotive scene here, attending as many car shows, meets, and events as he could (and still does!). He also began his 7-month-long search for his perfect Porsche. He daily drives a 997.2 6-speed and loves every minute behind the wheel. In his free time, he enjoys working on his car, volunteering, and spending time with his wife Lauren and dog Remy. Currently, he volunteers at Paws4You (a dog rescue) and Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade (a community-empowering, home renovation non-profit for people in need).

Vanessa Varela for Director
Born in Montreal in 1986, I moved to South Florida with my family in 1992. My love for cars began early, inspired by my brother Petro, who owned a track car. At 16, I started joining him at track events in Sebring, which ignited my passion for motorsports.
My connection with Porsche deepened when I married into a Porsche-loving family. Together, we’ve explored tracks from Barber to Sebring to Homestead Motorspeedway. In 2018, my husband Bobby Varela made me an affiliate member of the PCA Gold Coast Region, and since then, my involvement has only grown.
I’ve co-hosted several key events, including Oktoberfest, the 911 and Turbo Chronicles, and various drive and dines, contributing to the vibrant community we all cherish. Recently, I purchased my first Porsche, a Macan S, which has been a thrilling addition to my life.
I am running for a position on the Board of Directors to further our club’s positive momentum. My goal is to ensure our events are inclusive and enjoyable for all members, fostering a community where everyone feels welcome and engaged. With your support, I am committed to bringing fresh ideas and continued enthusiasm to the PCA Gold Coast Region.
My name is Dan Doyle. In 2007 I joined Porsche Club of America and have been a member of the Gold Coast Region ever since. Shortly after joining GCR, I became involved in the Driver’s Education Program. After much work and study, I became a PCA Instructor in 2012. I enjoy giving back to the Porsche community as an instructor to this day. I began my public service with GCR as a 2nd Alternate Board Member in 2011. In 2012 I became a regular Board Member. Being a Board Member gave me an opportunity to interact in a different way with all of the wonderful people I’ve met in GCR. In 2014, in addition to being a Board Member, I became the Driver Education Chairman, a job I performed through 2015. Also in 2015, I continued my service with GCR as Vice President, a position that continued through 2016. For 2017 and 2018 I was honored to serve as GCR’s President. Thereafter, I served as Past President on the Board of Directors and was Chairman of the Nominating Committee. After some much needed time off, I’d like to continue my service with GCR. It has been my honor to serve the region, I look forward to doing so again and I look forward seeing everyone at upcoming GCR events!
Election Bios - Directors
Hello Porsche Enthusiasts, I’m Virginia Holden, a candidate for the Board of Directors position. I have been an associate member of PCA since 1998, and my husband Ed, is a 48-year member. We have been fortunate to enjoy some of the social events that the Gold Coast Region has organized such as the Poker Runs, Drive to Everglades City, etc. In 2003, we traveled to Wesley Chapel, FL to participate in the annual Porsche Parade with our 1967 911S. We did our best in the Time Speed Distance Rally, but alas, did not prevail! However, it was a great experience and met some wonderful Porsche owners. Meeting such great people at these events convinced me to get more involved with the club.
My past work experience involved co-owning and operating a recording studio in downtown Fort Lauderdale. We attracted some of finest clients to our very private and unique facility, called New River Studios. We offered recording and post production services to artists such as Jimmy Buffet, Peter Frampton, Enrique Iglesias and many others. Running a business required me to wear many hats: manager, travel agent, bill collector, caterer and so on. I would like to bring my skills and experience to this wonderful group of Porsche members. While our children were in their various schools, we participated in organizing school auctions, charity events and mentoring new families. I was a member of the School Advisory Board for 6 years during our children’s middle school years. I would like to continue helping out where needed and getting further involved with our club.
