FIRST TURN

The countdown towards the end of the year is in full swing. The Club has not slowed down in terms of presenting a wide range of activities for our membership. I have had the pleasure of meeting several new members, who all have positive comments on how active Gold Coast is as a Club. The general comments are always the same: the region they came from had good events but nothing like the scope and diversity of Gold Coast.

When I hear this comment about our region, I can’t help but feel proud of the effort that is put in by the board members to make these events happen. But I feel prouder of the volunteer members that work diligently in the background to ensure that you have a good time.

You will read this in November, just before the Region Elections. You will have received biographical information about the candidates for each position and you may use that information and your own good judgment to cast your vote for the person that you feel will do the best job for the Club.

As I write this, we are waiting for Hurricane Milton to make landfall in Central Florida. Apart from a few members, our membership is in South Florida and thus, not in the projected path of the storm. I still want to express my support to those that are under threat and remind the rest of us to stay alert; this storm could turn South towards us in a heartbeat.

We have entered the holiday season, the days are getting shorter and we will soon turn our clocks back when daylight saving time ends. Hopefully, we will start to feel a tinge of fall air here in South Florida in time for the drives coming up this month. November has a full slate of activities that will give us opportunities to socialize, dine and drives, tech sessions and show off our beautiful Porsches.

Wishing the veterans in our region a Happy Veterans Day!

This is also the season of gratitude, and as Social Chair, I would like to say thank you to the Social Committee

Mike Del Pozo, Cynthia Fluhart, Ian Gerada, Dottie Kidd, Lissette Gonzalez, Noemi Sanchez and Rick Vineyard

who have volunteered throughout the year to bring you our great events. It is truly a team effort.

I would also like to thank our monthly social hosts, Gonzalo Acevedo, Ruben Alsina, Mike Del Pozo, Ian Gerada, Mario and Lissette Gonzalez, Roger Gonzalez, Peter Granada, Jacob Halverson, Paul Laya, Jorge Morales, Miriam Oliveira, Gus Ramirez, Carlos Trevison and Lee Wood for being dedicated volunteers and organizing these regular socials.

Finally, thank you to everyone who has stepped up to help at our many events - from checking people in, assisting with parking and leading & sweeping group drives. We can’t do all that we do, without you.

A nice turnout for the Third Thursday Social at Bougainvillea’s Tavern in Miami. Thank you to Jorge Morales for hosting this event.

KEY STROKES

Every year for the past 17 years that I have been editing the Kassette, I ask the same question in November and December, “Where did the year go?”

The social team, under Christy Spangler’s leadership, has provided a great year of activities. Thank you to all of the members who helped to make Gold Coast such a great PCA region.

If you are a new member you may ask, “How do I get more involved in PCA?” The best answer is to attend our events listed in the calendar and ask questions about the club and our different activities. When I see new members volunteering to help, I know that they will soon learn that PCA is one of the best car clubs in the world.

One of the most popular PCA Club Racing events in the world just announced the 2025 dates in a flyer on page five. My wife and I have been volunteering at the race for over 15 years. You will be receiving information about volunteering from our volunteer chair, Paul Raben, through your e-mail. You can also follow on Facebook at “PCA 48 Hours at Sebring.” We will be publishing more information about volunteering in the next Kassette.

For years we have been wanting to honor our veterans with an article in the Kassette, and we finally achieved our goal. There is a reason we are named Gold Coast Region and as you read “Finding Gold Veterans” on page 18, you will see why as you get to

know about some of our GCR veterans. We salute all of our veterans.

Wow! Check out page 10. Nothing like bringing home the GOLD from the West Coast. Congratulations Jason Crow and Lorenzo Rodriguez

Sometimes it is hard to keep up with new automotive technology. Staff Writer, Alicia Laya, provides us with a look into new Porsche technology for 2025.

We hope you participated in the GCR election by voting. If you have not voted, you have until November 15 to cast your vote. Enjoy the ride.

From thrilling driving events to social gatherings, there is something for everyone. Here is a quick guide to help you get started.

Clubregistration.net

We utilize clubregistration.net for all our event registrations. This website requires a separate login from PCA. ORG, so please visit clubregistration. net and create a new account. This will come in handy when registering for one of our many events.

From Autocross, where you can test your driving precision to rallies through South Florida’s roads, you will find an event that matches your comfort and thrill level. Do not miss out on our Driver Education (DE) programs at local tracks, where you can safely explore your Porsche’s capabilities in a controlled environment.

Social Events

Beyond the driving, we place a strong emphasis on camaraderie. Our social calendar is packed with events ranging from casual meetups like Porsches & Pancakes and our third Thursday of the month social dinners to drive-and-dine events. Not to mention Oktoberfest and, of course, our annual trip down to the Florida Keys in January. It’s a great way to meet other members, share stories and admire the stunning cars that make up our club.

Tech Sessions

For those interested in the technical side of Porsche ownership, we organize tech sessions with local specialists. Whether you are into performance tuning, maintenance tips or restoration projects, these sessions offer valuable insights and hands-on learning. You will find plenty of resources and experts ready to help you take care of your vehicle.

Volunteering and Getting Involved

It is one of the best ways to build relationships within the club and contribute to its success. Plus, it is incredibly rewarding to see how much our region grows through member efforts.

Once again, welcome to the club! I’m excited to see you at upcoming events, and if you ever have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. The Gold Coast Region is your new Porsche family—enjoy the ride!

A WORD FROM WERKS WEST

Gold Coast members take Blue-Ribbons!

What sets a car apart from others?

Judging a Porsche at the Werks Reunion is every bit as much related to the story about the car and owner, or SUV, as it is about the vehicle itself.

We have firsthand experiences shared by GCR members that the story is huge. We have seen our members Bruce Margulies, Kevin Brooks, Ed Blair and several other club members win ribbons in their respective classes over the past few years at the Werks Reunion, Amelia Island.

When it comes to Werks Reunion in Monterey, California, our Gold Coast members generally may get to attend, but few actually ship or drive their Porsche to Cali for the event. Werks Monterey 2024 in August was different. Two GCR members were there with their respective vehicles.

Jason Crow participated with his 1974 911 in Mexico Blue IROC Tribute. His

911 had recently completed a full restoration at 9 Auto Motion to exact standards and level of perfection. The re-build of the vehicle took months. There is a full backstory about the vehicle, as Jason first acquired it years ago, followed by a mini build to IROC Tribute, but not the full Monty, so to speak. Jason and Melissa Crow, with the support of 9 Auto Motion,

undertook a proper transformation of the car. It worked at Werks. They were awarded the Blue-Ribbon in their class. It was a spectacular selection of IROC Tribute vehicles and each worthy of the win.

We suspect Jason gave the judges the entire history, and the depth of passion that went into the rebirth of his IROC Tribute. With Blue-Ribbon in hand, Jason was invited back to Luftgekuhlt 10, the first weekend in October, to display this beautiful machine at the gathering in Los Angeles.

Not to be outdone, member Lorenzo “Enzo” Rodriguez drove his purpose built overland modified Cayenne from Miami to Monterey. Enzo in @est2wstexpeditions navigated a 7500-mile round-trip route in his specially prepared Cayenne. His entry in Werks Monterey was stuff of Porsche legend.

Jason Crow - Winning in Sports Modified Class
Lorenzo Rodriguez with the hardware

Certainly, Enzo documented the coast-to-coast trip, the extensive mods and upgrades to the unit and the joy of driving to the event.

We expect that the judges hearing the complete story were blown away by the effort undertaken by this young man. Being a truly incredible story that the judges heard, a Blue Ribbon was graciously awarded to Enzo and his incredible Cayenne GTS manual, overland built, in the Macan-Cayenne-Panamera-Taycan class.

Congratulations to both Enzo and Jason on your Blue-Ribbon efforts. You make us proud!

FINDING GOLD VETERANS

This month, we recognize our Gold Coast

To serve our country is among the highest and most respected of our values as Americans. We understand that there are hundreds, if not thousands of ways to serve. Yet, military service is the penultimate service to the United States and our citizenry. This month we celebrate several members of the Gold Coast Region who have served and placed themselves in harm’s way, to provide protection for our country, our values and the individuals who live here.

On November 11th, we commemorated the end of World War I which formally ended on this date in 1918. The United States Congress adopted a resolution on June 4, 1926, requesting President Calvin Coolidge to issue annual proclamations calling for an observance on November 11th as a legal holiday each year, “A day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrate and known as Armistice Day.” The Congressional Act was approved on May 13, 1938. Later in 1954, Congress amended the bill to replace “armistice” with “veterans” and November 11th has been recognized as Veterans Day ever since.

Veterans Day is a day for honoring all veterans, and in this respect we offer our thanks and honor those who served our country. The following gentlemen are recognized vets who are also members of the PCA Gold Coast Region.

Region Military Vets...

As a member of the US Army 82nd Airborne Division, Mike served at the rank of E-4 (enlisted specialist) as an active duty member from 1982 to 1985. As an Airborne paratrooper, he jumped out of airplanes dressed and rigged for battle. His ‘jump school’ training occurred at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. Following jump training he was assigned and stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, North Carolina with the 82nd Airborne Division. The 82nd Airborne Infantry Division is known to specialize in parachute assault operations in hostile areas. They are mandated by the US Department of Defense to be “on-call to fight anytime, anywhere” at “the knife’s edge of technology and readiness.” The 82nd is the US Army’s most strategically mobile division.

During his time in uniform, Mike deployed with his Division to Grenada, Beirut, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Several of these actions involved a parachute drop into hostile territory with the prime directive to secure areas and/or neutralize hostile forces. We would refer anyone interested in learning more about these actions to the 82nd Airborne Division to WIKIPEDIA.

With his service to our country, Mike received multiple awards. These include the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, Parachuter’s Badge, Expert Rifle and Grenades Badge and two Presidential Citations. As an Airborne paratrooper, he participated in 114 total jumps, each out of a perfectly good airplane.

Mike Del Pozo catches a quick 5 after a jump. He's Airborne, US Army 82nd Airborne!

Today, Mike is married (Leslie Del Pozo) with two children who both attend Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Mike owns his own business, DP Window Cleaning. He is a member of the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce. He sits on the Board of Directors for the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The CRA Board is responsible for the development of the downtown area of Coral Springs.

Of special note, Mike is also a member of the PCA Gold Coast Board of Directors. He will complete his two-year term at the end of 2024. Additionally, within the GCR he has organized a golf outing, several Saturday afternoon meets at various breweries and was recently named as the GCR Manager for the Concours/ Car Show being held this month. Mike drives a sweet Porsche Boxster in black.

Mike suggests that there are many interesting stories that he could share, but it’s probably better that these be left for in-person conversations. Jumping out of airplanes would easily qualify, that first step into hostile territory would be worthy fodder for a lengthy discussion.

Socrates Esteban Zayas

Socrates, Doc Soc, is a Marine. If anyone knows and understands Marines, it is Semper Fi, always faithful. It also means once a Marine, always a Marine. A member of the US Marines does not retire.

Marines hold each other accountable, the call to serve never truly goes away. Long after active duty years, a Marine’s commitment continues to positively impact communities across the nation. Socrates served for a total of five years with active duty from June 22, 1984, to October 22, 1987. He remained in reserve duty for 1988 and 1989.

While in the United States he was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Camp Pendleton, California. This base was the primary location for trained Marine aviators, air crewmen and maintenance/support personnel. Socrates was trained as a helicopter technician (UH-1N/AH) and Crew Chief. His responsibilities included inspection and maintenance of helicopter airframes and components and to perform duties related to flight line operations. As Crew Chief, he led his team to make certain that flight worthy operations were possible for both the Marine Huey and Marine Cobra helicopters.

Bettina, the beautiful runnyeggs 996, owned by Doc Soc, Socrates Zayas.

Socrates spent time at MCAS New River in Jacksonville, North Carolina which is also a helicopter and tilt-rotor base. While in training for an extended period, Socrates was given orders to head to Lebanon with his unit. At the time he had “zero” experience with rotary wing aircraft, the helicopter, so he asked why his technical training was disrupted. The answer was simply, “because you’re a rifleman first, son.”

Socrates served under the 25th Commandant of the Marine Corps, General Robert E. Cushman Jr. He also spent time at Camp Pendleton, California, and was recognized as an expert rifleman.

Today Doc Soc, as he is known by many friends, lives in the North Miami Beach area of Aventura. He drives his 2003 996 C2 Cabrio in the late evenings across Biscayne and onto the beach traversing various bridges. Blasting music, feeling the ocean breeze and the sound of the exhaust of his steed known as Bettina, provides a therapeutic escape and reminds him of days gone by from the 80’s Miami Vice days. He participates in multiple PCA events

US Marine Socrates Estaban Zayas OoRah

when available and is active with a few of the subgroups in the area such as The Runnyeggs Club and the 996 drivers.

John Rodriguez

John Rodriguez is also a US Marine. He served his active duty from 1982 to 1985 and reserved duty years from 1986 to 1990. As a non-commissioned officer, Sergeant Rodriguez posted in multiple locations during his active and reserve duty years. These Included his Marine Corp Recruit Depot at Parris Island, SC, Twentynine Palm, CA, Ft. Benning Georgia (for parachute jump school training), Camp Pendleton, CA, Bridgeport, CA, Kaneohe Bay Marine Corps Base in Hawaii and the 4th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company in West Palm Beach, FL. John also served at the Rodman Naval Station in Panama.

His significant deployment came in 1989 during Operation Just Cause. He was sent to Panama by President George H. W. Bush to depose the de facto ruler General Manuel Noriega. Noriega, as readers may remember, was wanted for racketeering and drug trafficking.

John was trained as a Forward Observer and “Fire Support” Marine providing efforts to coordinate Close Air support and Naval gunfire to ground units. He was assigned to the Air Naval Gunfire Liaison company (ANGLCO). As an ANGLCO Marine he was jump qualified. His duties included planning, calling for, integrating, coordinating, observing, and adjusting artillery (cannon, rocket, and missile) and Naval surface fire support. This included use of LASER tools, rangefinders, guided

munitions, and coordination of lethal and non-lethal assets that included fixed and rotary wing (helicopter) close air support. Communications with the Department of Defense (DOD) encrypted and setup of secure networks for voice and data transfer which were also within his areas of responsibility.

Being an ANGLCO Marine, John was involved with training exercises that included allies such as the UK Corps of Royal Marines and the Royal Australian Regiment. These training events allowed the respective allies to gain a greater understanding of how foreign country servicemen can work together and achieve close coordination for any joint deployments. The training also provided the foreign country servicemen with a greater respect for the US Military knowledge, commitment, and strength.

John is a member of the Marine Corps League of Miami. The Marine Corps league is made up of local Marines that organize and promote community assistance and involvement for all veterans. During Veterans Day and Memorial Day, the League visits veterans in the hospital, places flags on veteran cemetery lots and also organizes the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program in December.

John has been a Gold Coast member for quite some time. He is the owner of BigIdea Wraps of Hallandale, FL. The company brings creative ideas to life through custom vehicle and boat vinyl wraps, graphic designs and all types of quality images and signage. John and his daughter, Christina, recently participated in the GCR HDPE in June with both driving his 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo.

US Marine Sgt. John Rodriguez, with his daughter Christina at the 2023 Marine Corps Ball

Richard Dorf

Richard “Richie” Dorf served in the US Army from 1971 through 1973. During his active-duty service, he was an E-4 grade serviceman. Basic training was completed at Ft. Dix in McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey. His Advanced Individual Training (AIT) was completed at Ft. Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina. Basic Combat Training was completed at Ft. Jackson.

There are many notable people who have been trained at Ft. Jackson. Besides Richie, a few of them were Jim Croce-singer songwriter, Desmond Doss-WWII Medal of Honor Recipient and Leonard Nimoy, actor (Spock of Star Trek fame).

Following the basic and infantryman training, Richie was sent to Ft. Benning in Columbus, GA for Airborne, and Ranger school. After graduating from these extensive training programs, he was assigned to the US Army Rangers.

Richard Dorf was on his way to Vietnam. He was roughly 2-3 weeks from being deployed to Vietnam, but the deployment was canceled. His Ranger company

was decommissioned shortly thereafter, and he was transferred to Ft. Bragg, NC. At Bragg he served the balance of his military career with the 2nd Battalion of the 508th Infantry Regiment which is part of the 82nd Airborne Division until he was discharged. His operational duties involved long-range reconnaissance and patrol platoon as part of the 508th Infantry Regiment. While he did not serve in any active or hostile duties, he is very proud of his contribution to the US Army, the Army Rangers, and his country.

Richie and Mike Del Pozo served in the same 82nd Airborne Division, but their service paths did not cross. The honor of introducing each other rested on the PCA Gold Coast Region.

Richard drives a white Porsche 911 997.2 Turbo Cabrio. He is active in many of the GCR Porsches & Pancake events and the 3rd Thursday events, usually attending at the Galuppi’s location. He lives in Boca Raton and has been a member of Gold Coast since February 2022.

Jim Mailliard

Following his graduation from the University of Florida, Jim Mailliard was commissioned in the United States Air Force through the Officer Training School. His first assignment was Undergraduate Pilot Training (UPT) at Laughlin Air Force Base (AFB) in Texas. This base conducts training for the USAF, Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard.

At Laughlin, Jim flew the T-6A, a single engine turboprop aircraft and a T-1A a twin-engine jet aircraft. The T-1A is used for advanced pilot training. Both the T-6A and T-1A were used to gain experience and “hours” to prepare pilots for airlift and tanker aircraft. Jim was stationed at Laughlin between 2007 and 2008. He was basically earning his wings!

Jim Mailliard with his son and his 993 Cabrio in Wynwood Arts District, Miami

Following the UPT experience, he was stationed at McGuire AFB in New Jersey. This portion of his active duty (2009-2013) involved flying the McDonnell Douglass KC-10A, which is a “tanker” aircraft that carries jet fuel to allow aerial refueling of primarily tactical aircraft in transit to active areas, or in refueling such aircraft in hostile areas. Several deployments to the Middle East and Afghanistan came during these years, as the KC-10A refueling capabilities were essential to the Air Force. in their mission in this area of the world.

In 2013 after his flight duty as a tanker commander, Jim was transferred to Ramstein Air Base in Germany. At Ramstein, the aircraft changed significantly, and the flying became substantially more interesting and perhaps easier. Jim was placed in the command seat of both the C-20H and the C-37A. These designations are readily understood by those in the Air Force, but for us who are not as familiar with the terminology, these aircraft are the Gulfstream-IV and the Gulfstream-V respectively. Those who have heard of Gulfstream before,

Richard Dorf, US Army Airborne Ranger, with his 997.2 Carrera Turbo Cab

recognize the brand as among the most significant business aircraft in use today. The G-series of business jets are highly sought after for their airworthiness, range, and incredible quality.

During his active duty years, besides his flying responsibilities, Jim was a KC-10A Instructor Pilot for the

305th Operations Group. He became Executive Officer at McGuire AFB for the Group. Then, during his time in Germany at Ramstein, he was the C-20H/C37-A Evaluation Pilot and Chief of Standardization and Evaluations at the 76th Airlift Squadron. While living in Germany, he rekindled a childhood dream of one day owning a Porsche 911.

Flying the Air Force versions of today’s corporate aircraft (C-20H/C-37A, i.e., the “Gulfstream” models) he had the opportunity to travel the globe. He flew many interesting persons (Generals, Admirals, Congressmen and Senators) to and from many third-world locations. Global destinations included Berlin, Tokyo, Sydney, Paris, Aspen, CO and almost everywhere in between.

It was an awesome opportunity to see the world. He suggests that there are far too many stories to fit into the Kassette, so we’ll have to join him for a beer one day. He maintains that he met some of his best friends while on active duty.

Active duty with the USAF spanned a total of eleven years, from 2007 to 2018. In 2018 Jim left active duty and became a member of the Air Force reserve. His reserve duties are scheduled around his day job as a pilot for a major legacy airline. His Air Force reserve efforts run from 2018 up through the present day.

His reserve duty involves a few nonflying jobs. However, his responsibility at the Academy Liaison Office for the United States Air Force Academy is a favorite. He enjoys mentoring and evaluating applicants to the Air Force Academy and he works diligently to share the lessons, both good and bad, about life as an Air Force pilot. He suggests that he was very fortunate to have had such a great career. “Luck and timing are everything,” Jim adds. We suspect that a sincere love of country and a dedication to service also carried him along the way.

Today Jim lives in Ft. Lauderdale with his wife Jenna and two sons Van (3) and Rhys (1). He drives a 1995 Porsche 993 Cabriolet and will get out with a few of the air-cooled groups (A&W, ACBC, LVFTGEKVHLT) that are known to enjoy the nice winter drives to the Keys and elsewhere. Jim joined the Gold Coast Region this spring and has been starting to get to know several members through our many events and meets.

Luc - Founder of Permagard

This 2020 Porsche Macan just received its second Permagard Service Treatment application! It was treated to a Permagard initial application of our Reactive Polymer when it was newly purchased 4 years ago, and as you can see, it still looks be er than brand new. The Permagard Service Treatment is a process that consists of cleaning the Permagard protective coating that was installed to this vehicle 4 years ago. The beautiful Miami Blue color, manufactured by Glasurit, on this Macan is something truly special to behold. Permagard is the only product available today than can make this color shine like the night lights of South Beach! Permagard acts as a durable, sacrificial layer that is added on top of your original paint to protect 100% of the paint’s thickness over its lifespan. Permagard’s added layer, combined with 100% of your paint’s thickness, is what gives the incredible depth of shine and wet-look e ect that Permagard is famous for. Our competitors require wet sanding, compounding, and clay barring before their products can be applied. All of these processes remove layers of your original paint, therefore, reducing its thickness. Using our competitors’ products will result in reduced depth of gloss and protection, as the paint you are trying to protect will get thinner and thinner over time. Choose Permagard if you want to durably protect 100% of your original depth of gloss and shine! Call our Permagard Headquarters today at (305) 662-5070, to experience the Permagard di erence. It’s time to shine and see yourself in your beautiful Porsche!

Thurston King

As a United States Navy HM2 (Hospital Corpsman Second Class), he could have been called “Doc” by the Marines he served with. As a hospital corpsman, he was designated as a field service medical technician serving with the US Marines. Thurston served his active-duty years between January 11, 1983, and January 11, 1989, for a total of six years.

The first two years were spent training for his duties, primarily at the Naval Station Great Lakes which is north of Chicago. For the remaining balance of his Navy service Thurston was stationed at the Norfolk Naval Base in Norfolk, Virginia. This is the largest Naval base in the United States. He spent most of this time at the Medical Clinic as a technologist.

Thurston shared the following story. “During my last year in the Navy, I was sent to Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base in San Diego to train on how to

set up a fleet hospital. We had the Seabees come in to help us set up a hospital in the middle of the desert. They brought in cargo carriers that contained X-ray rooms, laboratories, and operating rooms. They even brought in A/C units that were connected to the tents through large connecting tubes. When you were inside the tents, it felt like you were in an actual hospital.”

“In January 1989, my enlistment ended and a few months later, Operation Desert Storm began. So obviously, the US government knew it was coming long before it started since they sent all of us out to California to train to set up a hospital in the desert. It was a great experience, but I was lucky to have gotten out just before the deployment. Before I got out, I qualified to go to Coronado for Seal training, but they wanted me to re-enlist for another 6 years. I wasn’t willing to make that commitment. I look back on my time

in the military as some of the best experiences of my life, although I didn’t feel that way at the time.”

Thurston received the US Navy Good Conduct Medal during his service to our country and no doubt made a substantial difference in helping those he treated while a Navy corpsman.

Roger Fabel

Virtually everyone in the Gold Coast Region knows our Kassette Editor, Roger Fabel. He’s been putting together the Kassette newsletter for over 17 years and has done a fantastic job in bringing the quality of the publication to its current level for the enjoyment of our membership.

What you probably do not know is that Roger is also a US Veteran, having served in the US Air Force for four years, 1968 to 1972 as active duty, and as a reservist from 1972 to 1974. Roger was a staff sergeant (E5, enlisted grade 5) and was stationed in London, England.

His responsibilities included the installation and maintenance of critical equipment which allowed open and top secret communications to occur between the United States, Europe, and the respective airborne command posts. His specific location for duties was the Royal Air Force (RAF) Uxbridge, which is located in the Greater London area on the far west side. This specific base was the home of the #11 Group RAF which was responsible for the defense of London and the southeast side of England during the Battle of Britain during the Second World War.

Roger indicated that his most unique and interesting opportunity came along when he worked in the underground command post that was used during WWII during the Battle of Britain and the D-Day Invasion.

Staff Sergeant Fabel was married to Sherry Fabel during this time and together, they gave birth to their first son, David. Having been born in England, David became more of a soccer fan than an American football fan, to the point that he rose to a high level of soccer competition. His younger brother and the Fabel’s second son, Adam, was born in Marietta, Georgia, and he (somewhat) followed in his father’s footsteps. Adam Fabel is a US Navy vet having served in Operation Desert Storm.

Roger and Sherry have been stalwart members of Gold Coast having joined our Region in 2001. Roger is a past president of GCR and both he and Sherry are active with many PCA events, especially the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race.

Additional GCR Veterans

Unfortunately, we don’t have the space to properly introduce every Gold Coast Region Veteran to our membership, and we have many. Each of these gentlemen and ladies have served our country to the best of their ability with love and passion, for liberty and freedom. Their efforts, with the respective branch of service, are a testament to the values our country was founded upon. Thank you one and all for your service.

GCR Autocross Chair

After 20 + years of running the AutoX program, we are looking to retire, most likely sometime in 2025. Dottie and I will be looking to train and mentor the next generation of AutoX chair and registrar. Please contact us if you have an interest in being trained and possibly carrying the AutoX torch in the years to come. Over the next few months, I will cover some of the most pressing situations that future AutoX managers will face. This Month, Equipment-Part 1, which will talk about the AutoX trailer. Next month I’ll discuss timing equipment. Towing and maintenance of the trailer has always fallen on the plate of the AutoX chair which can be time consuming, especially if the chair is also participating as a driver. I would suggest that in the future, alternative ways be explored to deal with the trailer. The trailer contains most of the things needed to run an AutoX!

Porsche Innovations 2025

As this year comes to a close, we eagerly anticipate Porsche Innovations 2025.

The staff writer had the opportunity to invite Champion Porsche and interview Porsche Pros, Bruna Franke and Luca Rusin for their insights, as well as Bobby Varela, GCR member, and General Manager at Foreign Affairs Motorsport.

We started by asking Bruna and Luca the pros at Champion: What new features can we expect from the 2025 models? Bruna shared the following, “The interior designs will radiate stylish, sophisticated, modern sports car aesthetics and offer generous, fitted tech features, characterized by digital operating and display elements.” Bruna then pointed out a few new interior and exterior features:

- Instrument cluster with a 12.6-inch curved display

- Air conditioning smartphone compartment with wireless charging

- Air quality system for protection against pollutants

- More assistance systems and technology

- Expanded integration of Apple CarPlay®

- Android Auto

- High, elevated center console

- Front end with aerodynamic design

- Porsche Active Aerodynamics (PAA)

- Variety of new exterior colors

- Significantly larger dimensions (wider)

- Low center of gravity (lower)

Luca complemented this list and added, “Among the many anticipated model releases and new features/ functions coming out in 2025, the

one that stands out is Porsche’s new cutting-edge chassis system, the Porsche Active Ride. Porsche Active Ride is a further enhancement of the air suspension system that is debuting in 2025 Taycan models and Panamera E-Hybrids. The new system can alter damping forces in all four wheels in just milliseconds. This new technology can eliminate nearly all longitudinal and lateral diversions when accelerating, braking and when driving through corners.”

He detailed it even further, “The technology enables the car to remain essentially at the same level, even during intense track maneuvers. The new Taycan Turbo GT has achieved unprecedented performance by setting a record lap time at the Nürburgring Nordschleife for a 4-door car of 7:07.55 minutes.

This beats the previous record set by the Taycan Turbo S by 26 seconds, thanks in large part to the innovation of the new Porsche Active Ride technology. In addition to significantly improving performance, the Porsche Active Ride’s comfort entry feature quickly raises the vehicle 55mm as soon as a door is open, making entry

and exit remarkably easier for vehicle occupants. Porsche Active Ride is expected to make a significant impact in the car industry, and potential future implementation across Porsche’s product line will likely set further benchmarks in terms of performance and comfort.”

Curious to learn more about Porsche’s EVs, we asked Luca: With the growing focus on electrification, how is Porsche going to enhance the performance of its electric vehicles for 2025, while still maintaining the driving experience Porsche enthusiasts expect?

Porsche Active Ride

Luca went on to say, “Porsche is continuing their focus on electrification, making progress with the release of its second electric vehicle, the Macan EV. This electric version of Porsche’s most popular model, the Macan, has debuted with two initial variants: the Macan 4 and the Macan Turbo. Both models showcase impressive stats, demonstrating Porsche’s ability to combine the practicality and performance applications of EV technology. The Macan 4 has an EPAcertified range of 308 miles, while the Macan Turbo boasts a maximum power output of 630 horsepower.”

“Porsche has also improved charging time in the new Macan EV. The DC fast-charging takes just 21 minutes to go from 10% to 80%, thanks to the new 800-volt architecture with a maximum charging capacity of 270 kW. The latest version of the Taycan has also set a new benchmark, with DC fast charging from 10% to 80%, taking only 18 minutes with a charging capacity at 320 kW.”

“Further electrification has been introduced in the Porsche 911 lineup as well, with the 2025 model set to debut Porsche’s T-Hybrid technology. This new technology, derived from the motorsport technology of the Porsche 919includes the installation of an E-Turbo to quickly build up boost pressure and torque through the combustion engine. The introduction of the E-Turbo has vastly improved engine speed, especially in lower ranges, resembling EV acceleration patterns, while maintaining the combustion engine sound and feel that Porsche enthusiasts crave. This new E-Turbo will also provide additional performance through the new electric motor in the PDK system. These Porsche innovations lead the

2025 model to an impressive 532 horsepower, 59 more than the current iteration.”

Sustainability is something that we hear about every day. The staff writer asked Bruna and Luca: What steps is Porsche going to take in 2025 to make its vehicles eco-friendlier?

Bruna replied, “Porsche aspires to use sustainable materials in its vehicles and close resource cycles. We aim to implement more circular production processes maximizing resources, material and energy efficiency and optimizing waste and water management.  Porsche is also working to recycle batteries and reduce the environmental impact.”

Luca added, “Porsche’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its 2025 product lineup. The company aims to deliver 80% of its vehicles as all-electric by 2030, depending on customer demand and the development of electromobility, as noted in a recent statement from Porsche. With the production of the combustion engine 718 being ceased in 2025, and a 718 EV derivative taking its place, Porsche will boast a product lineup featuring some form of electrification in each model. Whether it’s the Hybrid Panamera and Cayenne, the fully electric Taycan and Macan, or the new Turbo Hybrid 911 GTS, Porsche is demonstrating its ability to follow through on this aim, and 2025 will be a crucial year to see if the customer demand and development of electromobility can match Porsche’s ambition and ability to deliver on this objective.”

Concluding our time with Bruna and Luca, we asked one last question: What is Porsche planning in terms of safety features in 2025?

Bruna commented, “The Augmented Reality Head-Up Display projects relevant driving information onto the windscreen in a visible manner. The high-quality representation means that it looks like the information has been directly incorporated into the road straight in front of the vehicle. The system helps the driver take in all relevant displays, information, and alerts more quickly, which minimizes the risk of distraction."

Luca chimed in, “This advanced display is available as an option and offers a higher-quality view than traditional head-up displays. It integrates Navigation inputs, Driver Assistance Systems, Warnings and Need for Action prompts onto the windshield, providing a higher-quality representation. This technology makes the information appear as if it’s directly integrated into the road ahead, enhancing the overall driving experience.”

We are equally excited to hear additional insights into Porsche innovations from one of our longstanding GCR members, Bobby Varela, General Manager at Foreign Affairs Motorsport. With his extensive handson experience on both the technical and practical sides of the car world, he is a valued voice to add to this discussion. Bobby has a unique perspective from his many years in the automotive industry.

Several 2025 Porsche models are coming out in either EV or hybrid. What do you think will have the biggest impact on owners for longterm maintenance and future repairs?

Bobby replied, “Probably one of the more important reasons for going EV is fewer parts to maintain. EVs still have moving parts that

need replacement or servicing at some point, i.e., cooling systems, wheel bearings, window regulators, a/c systems, tires, brakes and suspension.”

We understand that in 2025, there will be no more manual transmission in the Porsche 911. What are your thoughts on that?

“The first manual transmission car I had the opportunity to drive was my father’s 1984 911, not the easiest, but a lot of fun. Manual transmission cars allow the driver to feel like they are more in tune with how the car drives and reacts. I am sad to see them go away. It will make the classic manual cars even more coveted and loved by Porsche enthusiasts.”

Porsche is also focused on E-fuel (e-petrol) as a sustainable fuel alternative. What would you say are

the challenges or advantages?

Bobby broke it down, “The challenges are energy-intensive manufacturing process, high production costs, limited availability and advantages are Carbon Neutrality potential, performance preservation while using existing infrastructure. The compatibility of current fueling stations can easily offer E-fuel without a major makeover.”

Porsche has stated they aim to have 80% of vehicles go EV by the year 2030. What are your thoughts?

“Honestly, it’s the logical progression. Porsche is an engineering and marketing monster. I could only expect it to be at the forefront of the EV game. I am personally not an EV fan, I’m an ICE (internal combustion engine) enthusiast till the end. I find it interesting how the Taycan sales have fallen off. They surpassed 911 sales in 2021 and now the sales of

Taycan have fallen over 50%. When I visited the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta earlier this year, I was picked up by the Director, Ralf, in a Taycan. I asked Ralf what he thinks of the Taycan? He flat-out said that he would rather not talk about it.” Bobby added, “I’m curious to see where the industry goes from here, and hopefully, Porsche has it figured out.”

The GCR appreciates the insight and candid responses to our questions. Thank you, Bobby Varela, Bruna Franke and Luca Rusin for your time and invaluable knowledge.

With 2025 around the corner, the future of driving is changing. Porsche pledges to charge ahead, proving that while all roads may lead to electrification, not every drive will be the same.
