President’s Corner Steve Kidd, President It has been an honor and privilege to serve our members as Gold Coast Region President for the last two years. Time has gone by fast and not without excitement and challenges. I have thoroughly enjoyed serving as your President and hopefully have lived up to your expectations as a club leader. I want to thank all the Officers, Directors and Committee Chairs that I have served with for continuing to put on fantastic activities that our members enjoy. In addition, I want to thank all the unsung heroes that prefer the behind-the-scenes stuff, as well as our advertisers and sponsors that contribute when and where needed. Finally, I want to thank our members for being a great group of friends and what Dottie and I call our Porsche family. I’ll be continuing in the role of Past President, as a Club Race Committee member, GCR Historian and GCR AutoX chair (a position I have held for a generation). While the COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on most PCA in-person events between April and September this year, in-person activities did start to reemerge recently with four activities that I’m sure you’ll read about in separate articles. These were primarily outdoor events where social distancing and other safety protocols could be imposed and COVID-19 waivers were mandated. A brief re-cap of those four events is below: Sept 12 AutoX Our first AX since February. Great turnout and the first GCR event to utilize COVID-19 protocols. October 10 Mural tour in Lake Placid. A great drive followed by a walking tour of 44+ murals. We’ll do this again! October 20-25 Drive to the mountains of North Carolina. The second annual event with lots of great driving and fall color. October 31-November 1 DE GCR’s first event at Homestead in quite a while and good re-start for our DE program. In November we re-introduced our very popular Porsches and Pancakes in a smaller
format with a few new locations and safety precautions. I understand our Thursday Socials will again be coming on line soon with outdoor dining and limited table capacities. Still up in the air as of this writing is a New Member Social and a Holiday Party. The original holiday party plans were nixed due to location issues and the cancellation of the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Parade. The New Member Social may likely move to early December and a possible new location with revised food / beverage offerings. Watch your e-mail blasts for updates on these and other events. 4Also, not totally off the slate is another AutoX in December. Again, I’m asking for member assistance in finding a new AX site that’s affordable and safe... Please contact me if you have an “in” at any potential new AX site and we’ll do the necessary follow-up. Additionally, GCR will be having it’s 2021 planning meeting soon and member input is welcome and encouraged. If you have an activity you would like GCR to consider, please contact one of the Officers, Directors or Social Chairs listed in the Kassette and we’ll do our best to bring the idea to fruition. To recap the last two years, let’s start with 2019, which by all accounts could be considered a banner year. We had a large number of events spread out across the region and introduced some new activities. Please revisit the July 2020 issue of the Kassette, page 33, to see specifically where our members “played”. Some of the highlights included the Porsche Parade in Boca Raton; the last time GCR hosted a Parade was in 1968. We did our first rally in many years which helped members get the idea of what a Porsche Parade rally might be like. Another first was our road trip to the mountains of North Carolina in October to drive some great twisty roads and see the changing of the leaves. GCR had a remarkable year with charity contributions to several different children’s hospitals in record amounts. A
good chunk of the donated money came from auctioning off Porsche Parade surfboards: ...our thanks again to the generosity of the high bidding members and to PCA National for making this happen. Also new was the restructuring of GCR Board meetings and their locations. Unlike past years, three Board meetings were held at different Porsche dealerships, two at independent garages, and most of the rest at a neutral location in Boca to better serve our members/ officials in the northern part of our region. Membership continued to grow at record levels and member feedback indicated that you were pleased with the overall number and diversity of GCR programs and activities. 2020 started off much like 2019 with Q1 again offering a large number and type of events. Two of the Q1 highlights were membership drives in Miami (at DRT) and another in Palm Beach (at Super Car Week) both held at non-PCA events. In late March, the COVID-19 pandemic changed the landscape of what we could do. While the COVID-19 pandemic put the brakes on most PCA in-person events between April – September this year, PCA & GCR did offer a number of ways to keep members engaged such as virtual happy hours, virtual car shows, photo contests, project 9xx and a number of PCA National offerings. Also, as you have read about previously, final steps are being taken in the formation of a new region in the northern part of what is now GCR. As stated before, this should have little impact on most members and those with zip codes in the new area will be given a choice to transfer to the new region if they want. PCA members can participate in any region events so it is likely more activities will be available for everyone. Final National approval and issuance of a new PCA Region in the north end of GCR are in the final steps. Again, it has been a pleasure to serve as GCR president twice (total of 5 years) and thanks for all the members support............

Lake Placid Mural Tour Story and photos by Dottie and Steve Kidd
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most PCA events were either canceled or postponed between March & August. In September things started easing up a bit as many areas moved into phase 3 of the recovery. Gold Coast Region hosted an AutoX in September and on October 10th took the big leap by offering GCR members an opportunity to drive their Porsches, socialize outdoors, and see some great artwork. While the landscape of the event was different (Covid-19 waivers, masks, social distancing, sanitizer, etc.) none of this hampered the fun. The event structure made it easy to stay well within PCA Covid guidelines with participants selecting one of three arrival times when they registered on Club Registration. This kept the crowd size down, and with the large open-air pavilion, easy to maintain social distance. The club not only rented the big shelter, but also the whole park and lots of parking on all four sides of the park. As participants arrived, most were greeted by GCR president Steve

Kidd, who explained the next steps and what to expect. Some members chose to bring their lunch and others were advised of several local restaurants that offered take out or limited seating. After getting “waivered up” by Dottie, participants were given a guide book that explained each mural and what the artist expected viewers to find in each mural. Most of the 50 + murals were on Interlake Drive or Main Street...about a 1.5mile walk depending on where you started. Most chose to walk, and if one were to speed walk the whole route, it could be done in about 35 minutes. However, if one were to stop at each mural, read the description and find the hidden artwork, it might take 3+ hours. The murals were historic images of the area, painted on the sides of many buildings. It is impossible to describe them in words, so the picture on the following page will hopefully give you a taste of what to expect if we do another similar tour next year. If the corona virus continues to retreat, don’t be surprised if
Kassette | Dec 2020
we organize a gimmick rally going to the park like we did last year with our event from Palm Beach to Hobe Sound. If the rules permit, possibly we’ll add a cookout utilizing the huge bar-be-que pit at the park. While it is possible to “google” the town and see many of the murals, a viewer must see each mural in life size to get the full effect of each creation. One of the side bar events was to bring together a few of the members who had been in Gold Coast Region the longest and are still with us. Unfortunately, our #1 longest serving member, Stan Pearlman could not make it, but our 2nd and 3rd longest serving members, Jack Fuller and Lee Wood did attend and got a chance to catch up and spend some quality time together. I got to talk quite a bit with both Lee and Jack and will provide historical prospective about these two great members in another issue of the Kassette. Also note the front vanity plate on Lee’s car in one of the pictures…1966. I bet a lot of our newer members were not even born then! We need to thank Bob Kaufman and Lori Renzetti, who picked up Jack from the assisted living center in Lake Placid (about two miles from the park) and dropped him back after the event. Also a big thanks to Christy Spangler who helped with the greetings and door prizes. From the feed-back we received, everyone had a great time and were glad that things are slowly getting back to normal. It seems members love to drive their Porsches, socialize in a responsible way, and are excited to get back to doing PCA events. We hear you, so look for more to come! Dottie and Steve

1969 -76 Porsche 914
Ron Meyers, Staff Writer
History and Marketing Advertisements The Porsche 914 was originally conceived in the mid-1960s as a joint venture between Porsche and Volkswagen. Porsche wanted to replace its 912 with something cheaper and less 911-like, while Volkswagen was looking for a halo car vastly different from the Beetle, Bus, and Fastback. It seemed at the time like a match made in heaven, and the mid-engine targa-top two-seater that resulted was perfect for both marques. A handshake sealed the deal and all was proceeding well until the death of VW Chairman Heinrich Nordhoff in 1968. His successor, Kurt Lotz, unfortunately dictated major changes to the deal. Originally, Porsche was to sell a six-cylinder version of the 914 while Volkswagen would market four-cylinder cars. The new agreement dictated that the 914 would be marketed as a Porsche in the United States and as a VW-Porsche in Europe. Coachbuilder Karmann would assemble the 914 in Osnabrück, while bodies for the sixcylinder cars were shipped to Porsche in Stuttgart for the marriage to the 1969 model year 911 T 6-cylinder 2-litre carbureted engine (911s already had 2.2-litre engines at the time.) The car that debuted at the September, 1969 Frankfurt Auto Show was a true conglomeration. The front suspension was largely derived from the 911 with some VW components, and the interior was a blend of both companies’ parts bins. The initial 914/4 engine offering was Volkswagen’s 411E 80-hp Bosch fuel-injected 1.7 liter flat four mated to four bolt pattern wheels, hubs and brakes from the VW 411 family car. It was available with 15” VW steel wheels (first design MY1970-73 with chrome hub caps, second design MY1974-76), 15” Pedrini wheels, 15”

Mahle wheels and 15” Fuchs wheels. The 914/6 had a twin-carburetor 2.0-liter Porsche flat six tuned for 110 hp. The five bolt pattern wheels, hubs and brakes came from the 911 and was available with 15” steel wheels (silver or chrome), 15” Mahle wheels and with 15” Fuchs wheels. In addition the 14” Fuchs wheels could be ordered for more comfortable ride (higher tire profile). Initial reaction to the car was lukewarm. Some publications panned the oddball styling, vague shift linkage and slow acceleration of the four-cylinder car (0-60 mph time was in the 12 to 14 second range). MotorTrend was among the car’s fans, and named it the magazine’s first-ever Import Car of the Year for 1970 with the editors calling it “one of the best-handling machines any of us had ever driven” (MT, June 1970). They even praised its styling, reminding readers that the 911’s “locked-in fastback shape was of the ‘60s,” (ED- Little did they know!) and “The car underscores better than anything else the shift in automotive design influence out of America. Here we were in one of the first contemporary vehicles of the ‘70s and it had nothing to do with Detroit or the UAW or Yankee ingenuity.” Though the four-cylinder 914 quickly found its niche, the six-cylinder car struggled. Volkswagen’s deal with Porsche meant that the 914/6 was nearly as expensive as the entry-level 911, and after selling a mere 3,349 copies, Porsche killed it in 1972. In its place, the ‘73 914 got an optional 100hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder along with a smoother-shifting transmission, and in 1974 the 1.7-liter engine was replaced by an 85-hp 1.8-liter, with all four-cylinder engines featuring fuel injection. The 914s demise arose in 1976 as stricter emissions standards were
Kassette | Dec 2020
enacted. At production’s end, Porsche and Volkswagen had sold nearly 119,000 914s. The ensuing decades were not overly kind to the 914, as most were driven hard and not properly maintained and many Porsche enthusiasts dismissed it as a glorified Volkswagen. Many suffered from rust, especially in the notorious “hell hole,” the area including and just below the battery tray. But now that the 914 turned a respectable 50 in 1970 along with much corporate fanfare, regard for good honest 914s has been building. People have finally come to appreciate it for what it is—a uniquely styled air-cooled sports car that’s enjoyable to drive and easy to maintain. The following is a semi-complete series of 20 unique 914 ads for the USA market that were run in Road & Track, Car and Driver, Motor Trend, Sunset, Playboy, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated and others. To the best of my knowledge, 42 unique advertisements were run for the US market and at least 13 unique ads were specific to Germany/Europe/Japan. Some of the ads contained the same photos but with different print content. Some of the ads for the US showed Europe-only equipment. Can you find these (note front turn signal lenses, added bumper guards and side marker lights!) And for the US, some East Coast ads differed in the delivery price by $100 as compared to the ads shown on the West Coast ($3595 vs $3695). The years 1973-74 had the highest concentration of ads which corresponded to the 914s highest production volumes. I have attempted to organize the ads by year and in which publication they were run if I have that information. Any information you can provide me to fill in my gaps would be appreciated. Enjoy!

This month’s photo was submitted by Eddy Ruiz of his new 2020 Taycan Turbo S. He took the delivery of it 4 weeks ago (at the time of this writing). The photo was taken in Tavernier, FL and the Taycan looks stunning against the beautiful sunset.
How to submit a photo for consideration:
At first Eddy had doubts about owning an electric car, but after taking it on the track in Palm Beach, he loves it even more. “It is both a beast and a beauty. My 1995 993 is quite jealous!” says Eddy. Eddy used his Samsung Galaxy 10 cellphone to capture this image.
name phone number information about your car the title for the photo a short write up about the photo what kind of camera or smart phone you used to capture the image
I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming!
Email the above information with your high resolution image attached to gcr.potm@gmail.com

Calling All PCA Volunteers Paul Raben, Volunteer Co-chair The 48 Hours At Sebring Club race committee has begun making plans for the 2021 race. This year many changes are being made to conform to the COVID-19 guidelines. It is time for all Gold Coast and Suncoast members to start planning how they can get involved. It is your opportunity to give back to your region and be involved with the most successful Club Race in PCA and help raise money for region activities and The Ronald McDonald House charity. Start making plans and reservations to make it a weekend of fun and excitement. Where will you be? What will you be doing? What could you be doing that would possibly equal spending a weekend at world famous Sebring International Raceway with about 500 Porsches? Talk about a car show: this is the largest Porsche only racing event in the world – in fact, it is the largest single marque automobile racing event in the world! How could you miss it, especially when it is almost in your back yard! Last year’s 27th annual event was a great success: we had over 400 participating Porsches. Now, its the time to start planning on how you can assist in this great event. Make hotel reservations for the days you plan to attend. Pick from the available assignments listed below. This is a joint event consisting of friends from Gold Coast Region and Suncoast Region, the 27th edition will be
even bigger and better. The 48 Hours at Sebring has grown into the largest PCA Club Race in the country. We expect to sign up over 400 racers and Advanced Solo drivers in the first two days of registration. This means we will need volunteers to help us run this huge event more than ever. Why should you care? If you are a PCA member that has been standing on the sidelines, wanting to become involved, but unsure of actually attending your first event, this is a perfect opportunity to see what PCA is all about, and meet a group of really nice people! You will be asked to work for a few hours at a job that is actually more fun than work, you get a nice T-Shirt and other benefits that are currently being planned. You also just might meet someone who just won the Daytona 24 Hour race, or past winners of Daytona 24, Sebring 12 Hour or Le Mans 24 Hour, or maybe someone who has won them all. For sure you will not find a better gathering of Porsches and Porsche people anywhere. The Club race raises thousands of dollars for Ronald McDonald House each year and provides the Gold Coast and Suncoast regions funds to support Socials, Drivers Ed and AutoX programs and help local charities. Dan Smithyman, Co-Chairman 48Hours at Sebring
Over the past few decades the Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions of the Porsche club of America have had the honor of running the PCA Club Race known as The 48 Hours at Sebring. While over the years the event has grown to considerably more than 48 hours it has also grown in many other ways. The 48 Hours has always had a few things going for it. Starting with the most obvious perk, the track. The opportunity to drive your Porsche on the iconic Sebring International Raceway still brings chills to many of us even the most seasoned veteran. The event is always scheduled around the first weekend in February…in Florida. For those less fortunate individuals living in the frozen north this is nice too! Adding to the allure of the event is the quality of the activities both on and off the track. Drivers from all over the world know that, when they come to Sebring, they will be treated to some of the best racing of the year. The top amateur drivers and many pro drivers regularly attend. The off track events at Sebring have been some of the most exciting and well attended add ons at any event on the calendar year.
The Friday night Sponsor Showcase has produced some legendary cars and drivers putting on some entertaining and educational displays of the history of Porsche Racing.
