President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President

Since my last President’s article, lots of good things occurred ...and unfortunately a few not so good. First the bad news...our region saw the passing of 3 members who were well known to many of us... Frank Spangler, Bob Shuster and Rusty Grabowski. Please say a prayer in silence for each of these GCR icons. Regarding recent activities, as always our Porsches and Pancakes on the 1st Saturday of the month continue to be popular and easy to attend, as there is no pre-registration or pre-payment....just pick a location, fire up the Porsche and have a breakfast and great conversation with other members. You never know who will show up and the atmosphere is spontaneous and informal. Half the fun is seeing who shows up with what Porsche. Recently I went to one breakfast where there was a 1964 356C and a brand new GT4....over 50 years separating those 2 great Porsches....both driven the way they were intended. I suggest trying different P&P locations to sample different groups and flavors of Porsche. Similar to Porsches and Pancakes, our “Happy Hour” socials are on the 3rd Thursday of the month at multiple locations around the region. In addition to the above, April activities included, but were not limited to, the April 13th Gimmick Rally, the April 20th Eurofest car show, April 21 Autocross at PBIR, and the April 27 dine / drive to the Schnebly Winery/Shorty’s Bar-B-Que. It is our hope that members will see articles detailing each of these events in the Kassette. My thanks again to the event co-ordinators....Dottie, Peter and

Cynthia and the teams that worked with them to put on the events. Many hours of planning and prep work go into preparing events such as these. In addition to the above, April 15 was significant not only as the day to file our taxes, but also as the opening day to sign up for Porsche Parade activities and competitive events. As indicated in many past communications, the Porsche Parade is coming to Boca Raton July 21-27 and is the 1st time since 1968 that PCA National has held this world class event in South Florida. As of this writing, there is still time to sign up for parade and register for many of the activities. While some activities are filled up, many others still have availability and there are waiting lists that offer openings as cancellations occur or additional ones are added. While the host hotel is fabulous, and offering outstanding rates, many of the locals (GCR members) have the option to make day trips to Parade activities and spare the lodging expense. Once again, I’ll say there probably will not be an opportunity to attend a Porsche Parade this close for many years and if you can attend even a few days or activities, please sign up now. May and June have great activities planned so check your e-mails, check the GCR website, and plan to attend a future event. Some events are small and allow members to get to know each other more personally, other activities can have 100+ participants, while others can be Multi-regional or joint events. Two such multi-regional events coming up in May are the Mothers day Auto X

Jun 2019

|

at Sebring hosted by Gold Coast and Suncoast regions Similar autocrosses were done with Everglades region last year and these events always attract the best competitors and add excitement. Another Multi-regional event is Zonefest, hosted this year by Citrus region in Mount Dora over Memorial Day weekend. While there was not a Zonefest in 2018, there were incredible Zonefests hosted by North Florida region in 2017, and hosted by Gold Coast region in 2016. Zonefest is sort of like a Mini Parade with concours, rally, tech quiz and autocross as well as banquets and other functions crammed into a 3 day holiday weekend. Dottie and I love to visit other Zones and sample their multi-regional events, such as “Spring Thing” hosted by Smokey Mountain Region in Tennessee, which give us an opportunity to meet new friends and share ideas. Like the idea of long drives and structured activities? Consider the upcoming overnight tour to Sanibel in late August or the tour to the mountains of North Carolina (Fontana Dam area) in late October. Check club registration and the GCR website for more details. On a final note ….Members...please make sure you list your appropriate family or co member in your PCA membership profile. This can be done on line when you log into the PCAs national website , or by making a call or written request to National or....as I understand it on a phone app in the near future. Until next month.....Steve

Editor’s Notes Summer is here and many of you have plans to attend Parade next month. Members that are attending should have registered and selected the events that they want to attend. Since this may be your first Parade, we have dedicated this issue of the Kassette to prepare you for the event. When my wife and attended Le Mans in 1970 we did not know the history of the event. If we would have know that Porsche had never won, it would have been more exciting to see Porsche # 23 cross the finish line and make history as the first win for Porsche. Dottie Kidd, our secretary wrote a guide to help you understand Parade. She and

Roger Fabel- Editor

her husband Steve have won many events at several Parades and were selected as the Family of the Year from all PCA regions. Enjoy the information along with photos. If you have any questions, please call one of us to help. Parade is held in many locations but we will not see it this close again in our lifetime. Please check out the DE ad below. We have not sponsored a GCR DE event in a long time. As we restart the program please sign up and take your car to the track as we finish Parade. You will improve your driving skills and your Porsche will thank you for the exercise. Sign up early to reserve a spot. This event is open

to our zone and others attending Parade. Share your porsche Experience As you enjoy your summer vacation the Kassette is a good platform to show others what you and your family experienced with your Porsche. Many of the great “From the Members” articles have come from summer Porsche experiences - share your stories with us. Articles can be up to two pages long and your photos should be high resolution and sent as separate files not embedded. If you have a large set of files too big for the service provider please use www.WeTransfer.com and send them to my e-mail address. rfabel@aol.com

The Parade is coming …. The Parade is coming … are you ready? By Dottie Kidd If you haven’t registered for the 2019 Porsche Parade, being held right here in Boca Raton this summer, there still may be time to sign up and be part of about 2,000 Porsche members from all over North America for an entire week of Porsche madness. I have been to nine fabulous Porsche Parades beginning in 2003 with my first Parade in Tampa Florida, and I still have an umbrella from the event! I’m not sure if “addicted” is the right word, but once you have been to a PCA Parade you just can’t wait for the next one. After that one, Steve and I attended parades in Fort Worth TX, Hershey PA, Charlotte NC, Savannah GA, French Like IN, Jay Peak VT, Spokane WA and last year at Lake of the Ozarks MO. Guess what?? We are already registered for the Boca Raton parade for July 21-27 this year and can’t wait for another great Parade. While attending local Gold Coast events such as the Saturday breakfasts and gimmick rally, I ask who is going to Parade. Believe it or not, many members have said they don’t know what a PCA Parade is and what to expect for an entire week. Well, I can tell you from experience that it definitely is something you don’t want to miss this year – right in your own back yard! You can opt to stay at the Boca Raton Resort, or just drive from home for the activities.

You can still register until June 23rd at www.porscheparade.org

If you are wondering what you can do for a full week, you’ll actually find out that one week is not enough time. There are four competitive events: Concours d’Elegance, Tech Quiz, Autocross and TSD Rally. There are driving tours, golf tournament, gimmick rally, 5K run/walk, RC cars, Michelin driving experience, a full Parade of Porsches, and for the first time an off-road tour for SUV’s. While at the resort you can visit the goodie store, art show, tech sessions/seminars (such as TSD Rally School and Gimmick Rally School), historical displays, and any day in the hospitality area where you can meet other members, vendors, check out the bulletin board and have snacks. You can choose from wine tasting, beer tasting and six banquets on various days.

Let’s learn about banquets

Beginning on Sunday evening there is a Pirelli Welcome Party with a Miami Vice theme. On Tuesday the Concours d’Elegance banquet will present concours awards and National awards. Wednesday is the Porsche Design TSD Rally banquet (German theme) for awards. Friday will be the Michelin Autocross Banquet and Kids Recognition awards. Saturday afternoon a

10

Die Porsche

Kassette | Jun

2019

Volunteer Party is held where all volunteers have a chance to win many door prizes. Finally, Saturday night is the Reliable Carriers Victory Banquet where a trip for two to Germany is given away – however, you must be present to win.

What can we do with our kids??

Not to worry --- this is a family friendly event. Just sign the kids up (age 0 to 18) as “Parade Kids” and they will be just as busy as you are. There will be events where they can win trophies (just like you) such as arts and crafts, concours with cars they paint, tech quiz, scavenger hunt, “any”cross event, and more. During the Tuesday and Saturday adult banquets there will be a Kids Camp (age 18 months to 12 years) while you enjoy yourself at the banquet. Don’t forget on Friday the kids are eligible for trophies and recognition as well.

“Fueled by Volunteers” There is nowhere that this slogan is more appropriate than at Parade. Volunteering is an integral part of Parade participation for most entrants. The beauty is you have many opportunities to select a volunteer assignment that could include anything from indoor jobs such as registration or outdoor positions including but not limited to concours prep, safety inspections or site setup. Participants will need to register for at least two shifts to be eligible for the volunteer party typically held the Saturday afternoon on the last day of Parade. Not only are the volunteers treated to a great lunch, but also almost everyone walks away with some sort of goodie. The main spiff given out is several sets of tires and other high-end prizes. I would encourage everyone from Gold Coast Region to consider volunteering as we are the host region and can be of help to Porsche Club members not familiar with south Florida. Parade participants started signing up for volunteer positions with Phase II on April 15th and in some cases Parade officials will be continuing to seek volunteers as cancellations occur and more volunteers are needed for specific shifts.

Lodging choices are optional

One of the advantages of having the Parade in your region is the fact that some of our members may not need to pay for lodging. While you can choose to stay at the host hotel for one or more days, many of the locals will choose to commute to events and sleep in the comfort of their own home. At most parades this is simply not possible and lodging has been known to be a huge challenge. The Boca Raton Resort is a world-class hotel and an excellent destination if you have never been there. On the other hand, some Gold Coast members who live in the area will choose

to forego the hotel expense but take advantage of all the activities that Parade has to offer.

The Competitive events are really competitive

Whatever your passion in events such as concours, rally, autocross or tech quiz expect the stiffest level of competition you will ever come across. The concours features cars that have the highest level of preparation in all classes. As I understand it, some cars come shipped in sealed containers and hours of final detailing are spent prepping a seemingly perfect Porsche. The concours prep area is the place to go to pick up tips from real pros if you ever plan to take a serious dive into Q-tipping....a term for the real fanatics who use q-tips in search of every last speck of dust. Regarding rally, Parade goers have a choice of time-speed -distance (TSD) or gimmick . The TSD is usually held on the Tuesday following the concours. This is for serious rallists who have developed a great partnership and may not be a good thing for otherwise happily married couples. There is a thrill when a team does well on a rally leg which is probably what keeps the loyalist coming back. The gimmick rally, while still competitive, is fun and less stressful of either rally. At the Parade level, expect tricks, traps and a level above what you might find at a local rally. The autocross is two full days of intense competition where the best of the best slug it out for class champions and overall men’s and ladies’ champs. There are four very different progressed groups of classes from cars which are bone stock to highly modified racers with many hours and dollars worth of improvements. As in all competitive events, it is important to choose the correct class because the easiest way to get disqualified or protested is to not place your Porsche in the correct class. Don’t worry, there is a great team at final registration that can go over what has been done to your car and verify your class. New this year will be a grouping just for novice autocrossers. All novices will run together but the time will be adjusted based on the performance potential of each vehicle. The final competitive event, usually held on Friday morning, is the Tech Quiz. Competitors can choose a test based on a grouping of Porsches they are most familiar with. For instance, if you have owned Boxsters for the last ten years, you may want to opt for the test on Boxsters and Caymans. The tech quiz contains fifty general questions and twenty-five model specific with a few tie-breakers. Quiz questions come from a number of different sources, but the primary source is the Porsche Panorama. A final word about competitive events...there is a protest committee for each event and the protest process is well defined in the materials you will receive at registration.

Allow for some free time

While every day will have many events, our advice is to pick the activities that are the most meaningful, but don’t try to cram too much into any given day. Part of the fun of Parade is to meet

new people, socialize and enjoy the totality of such a major event. You will find some functions, such as the ice cream social and hospitality suite, are free of charge with your registration package and offer stress-free fun. You may have time to enjoy the beach, the pool area and the magnificent pink buildings as well as local parks and community activities.

World class ...in every aspect

The Porsche Parade, in my view, is the best event PCA has to offer. It brings members from all over the world together to enjoy activities involving their favorite car type and socialize with like-minded people. The Parade typically brings out members of the Porsche family from Germany as well as other dignitaries. Typically you will see Porsches shipped in from all parts of the world to be seen .

A few pointers from past Parades

On-site registration can seem a little overwhelming as there are many stations that Parade participants must visit and get their card signed off before they can pick up their coveted “goodie bag”. Parade goodie bags have always been a cut above the rest and usually contain useful information and quality keepsakes along with your name badge. You will need to wear your name badge to each event and if the event has tickets, such as banquets, you must have those in order to gain entrance. Also, please don’t feel that you have to register exactly when registration opens because it is often very crowded when it first opens. Most events and activities run on time so do not be late for the functions you have signed up for. If you find that you cannot attend an event you paid for or you are looking to add a new event to your schedule there is an extensive bulletin board in the hospitality suite that contains such listings. There may be a calling for additional volunteers in some areas so please help the club and pick up a shift if you have the time and energy. Additionally I would not be surprised if there is a calling for Gold Coast members with local knowledge to help with some of the tours. Again Gold Coast Region would like to show the rest of PCA what southern hospitality is all about....any questions? … there is always a help desk and help number to assist members in need. Remember, have fun, enjoy this Parade, because in all likelihood we won’t see a Parade in this area for many years.

Parade Concours Awards Photos by Roger Fabel

Article by Louis Gonzalez

One of the standard rituals during the Parade Concours Banquets is for everyone to stand up and then start sitting down based on the number of years they have attended Parade. It was interesting to note that when they got to 50 (considering that PCA is only 56 years old) there were still people standing. Joyce and I have only attended seven parades, including this one in Savannah. Of those seven, we have only concoured four times. During these seven parades previously attended, the venue for the concours sites have varied widely. From preparation areas in a hotel parking lot to preparation areas in parking garages. The presentation sites have included indoor convention centers, condominium parking lots, and this year, the best one – was an air conditioned convention center. The floor of the convention center was taped off with areas large enough for entrants to place their cars and all their concours preparation paraphernalia. Considering that outdoor temperatures in Savannah were over 100 degrees, this really worked out well. Members could come and walk and view all different model Porsches with the owners and their supporting staff either inside the car, with their head up under the engine cover or finagling in the hood compartment working hard to prepare the cars for the following day. It was a great venue for the concours prep. Unfortunately that evening Murphy’s Law came into play. I thought we were still in South Florida. It rained like you would not believe and predictions were that the following day could be the same. Another issue that came up was that due to being in air conditioning, when taking the cars out the following morning -- just like when you get out of your car your glasses fog up – that there would be major condensation on your cars. Fortunately someone got smart and recommended that the air conditioning be turned off that night. And it worked.

The majority of the Zone 12 members had on their bright orange Zone 12 Parade contest tee shirts. With respect to the 1973 911 T on display at the concours site, which had been sent to Germany to be restored by Porsche AG’s Classic Division and raffled off, I envy the lucky winner of the raffle. One of the things that I did do was take as many photos as I could to use as a reference library both in the preparation for authenticity and as a reference to doing restoration work on early 911s. The Parade concours preparation area, presentation area and banquet afterwards were all great and I encourage anyone who has not attended a Parade to attend one in the future.

Savannah Parade artwork

The following morning under cloudy skies everyone left the prep area for the concours site. There were concerns that the site would be very soft due to the heavy rains the night before. Fortunately this did not materialize and even though it was cloudy we had no rain. By noontime the sun started to peek its face through the clouds. Again, the concours site is probably the nicest that we have attended. It was in old Savannah in a park surrounded by large oak trees and historic houses and buildings The placement of the cars was extremely well organized together with the plaques identifying the car, the year and the owner. The judging was extremely well organized and again, like always, the judges were courteous, knowledgeable and really knew what they were doing. I really enjoyed this concours. Zone 12 had arranged to have a gathering of its members meet at one of the old hotels directly across from the concours site. The committee who put this together did an excellent job and it was one of our most enjoyable times during the concours.

PCA Parade Autocross Awards - GoldCoast .......... Article and Alex Ortega, Jr. Photos from PCA

Alex Ortega Sr. It was a great week in historic Savannah, GA. and I am very proud of all the autocrossers who participated in the parade autocross. Competition was fierce and every autocrosser battled to the last second. The parade autocross was held on Wednesday and Thursday, all stock classes ran on Wednesday and all production/ modified classes ran on Thursday. It rained Wednesday night and the course had some puddles on it the next morning, but they called in back up and heavy duty blowers pushed the water off the track. The event location was held at Hutchison Island Road Course paddock, which was right next to the Westin (host hotel). Friday night was the Autocross Banquet which was sponsored by Michelin. Awards were given to all who placed and Gold Coast Region took home 8 trophies. Again, I am so very proud of our team and I am very excited to see everybody next year in Salt Lake City, Utah. P.S. Looking forward to seeing everybody at our September 25 event @ BAC

Tech Corner : Twenty years it’s been since my family and I moved to South Florida (Weston) from the Midwest (St. Louis). Our 3 kids were still in school. Two in college, one in high school. Today, Mary and I have five (5) grandchildren from those three kids, and hundreds of friends, mostly through PCA and the Gold Coast and Suncoast Regions. I arrived as a young(er) man in my 40s. Now, as senior citizens, we’ve decided to start our next adventure in the PCA Suncoast Region (Tampa Area), Odessa to be exact. By the time you read this article, we will have relocated and I am madly scrambling to set up my shop (PedrosGarage) once again in a new PCA Region. But this is not really a goodbye. I will still be very active in PCA activities: • As a National Scrutineer for PCA Club Racing you can catch me at 5 or 6 races every year throughout the country.

Good Bye / Hello

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

• As one of the Tech Co-Chairs of the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race, you can catch me under the “circus tent” the week after The Rolex 24. • As a Technical Article writer, you can catch me at 20 - 30 different PCA Regional Newsletters every month (I hope the Kassette keeps publishing me). • As the Boxster/Cayman Resident Expert for the PCA Technical Committee, you can catch me answering your questions on PCA.org, on Panorama, at Tech Tactics East and Tech Tactics West and this year also at Parade (in Boca Raton). • As a Porsche enthusiast, you can catch me on my phone or through e-mail, both posted on PedrosGarage.com. It’s been a great 20 years at Gold Coast Region. I have truly enjoyed maintaining, fixing, upgrading and restoring so many of

your “babies” which you entrusted to me and getting to know each and every one of my customers as my friends. You are all welcome to take the scenic route to my new location whenever you want. Now we look forward to a new life on the West Coast of our beloved State of Florida. I can’t wait to repeat the experience with Suncoast Region where we already have so many long-time friends as well. See you soon! Please visit my website: www PedrosGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro Ⓒ2019 Technolab / PedrosGarage.com

Editors Note I would like to thank Pedro for his very professional technical articles that he has written for the Kassette for so many years. I could always count on Pedro to have his articles on my desk before the deadline each month. This is very important when you work on a monthly publication with many deadlines to insure their is a Kassette in the almost 3000 mailboxes at the beginning of the month. Pedro is not just a great technical writer but he has helped GCR advance in many ways over the years. As you can read above he serves on National PCA teams

to provide tech support and oversight to the Club Racing program. Pedro is well respected in the PCA community and has helped many members to improve the enjoyment of their Porsches. I hope the GCR board approves his request to continue publishing articles as many other PCA regions publish his tech articles.

Pedro is a great friend and will be missed in our region. Suncoast is gaining a technical expert who will be a big asset to their program. Thanks Pedro Roger
