President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President
Since the last time I wrote this article, our lives have changed dramatically...Buzz words seem to be Self isolation.. social distancing...N95...Stay Home...essential business ...and plenty more all due to Covid-19 aka the Coronavirus. I hope everybody is taking this pandemic seriously, as PCA regions canceled or rescheduled most events and we’re still in a “wait and see” mode as to what will happen in May, June and beyond. There is a huge amount of best practice information and news out there so stay informed and be safe. Since it’s difficult to look at the future, I’ll focus on a recent past positive outcome. This one from the 2020 Club Race. As many club race fans know, one of the big non-racing actions is the Charity Auctions. This year, in addition to auction items (donated by suppliers, members and sponsors) the Club Race team organized hot laps (with a pro driver) in a few really cool Porsches. Thru these efforts over $26,000 was raised for the Ronald McDonald House. In past years, the Tampa chapter of Ronald McDonald House was the sole beneficiary. This year one of our GCR members (thanks Kyle) pressed for an equal split of that contribution money and it came to be that
the Tampa Chapter and South Florida Chapter of the Ronald McDonald House will both receive $13K., to be donated directly from the Club Race account to the charity. When the news was shared with the Executive director of the South Florida chapter, it was clear we found the right organization. Here is some information about the Ronald McDonald House charities from their web site: “The mission of Ronald McDonald House Charities® (RMHC) is to create, find and support programs that directly improve the health and well being of children in South Florida. Guiding us in our mission are our core values: • Focusing on the critical needs of children. • Celebrating the diversity of the programs we offer and the staff, volunteers and donors who make them possible. • Staying true to our heritage of 36 years of responsible stewardship. • Operating with accountability and transparency. In 1982 a group of caring individuals, local McDonald’s Owner Operators, prominent doctors, a few corporations
and volunteers raised the funds to open the first House in Miami. Jackson Memorial Hospital graciously donated the land to make this program possible. Currently there are now more than 310 Houses throughout the world which provide a comfortable and supportive living environment for over 6,000 families each night. This relationship could blossom into the community service project we have been looking for. On a final note, another issue surfaced which members should be aware of....Some of the members in the Northern portion of GCR have expressed an interest in forming their own region. Bottom line This issue has been moving forward...until now...The group seeking to form a new region presented a proposal to divide the region. A committee composed of the 9 members of the GCR Board crafted a draft response. Since the coronavirus has taken forefront, the group seeking to spin off has asked the PCA Executive Council to put their application on hold until further notice. Stay tuned for more and please feel free to let me know your thoughts on this.....Steve

Editor’s Notes Where to start and what to cover, all of our events are on hold. I have been publishing our newsletter since 2007 and this is the first time I have not been able to provide a review of an event that just took place. For the past year we have been at full speed on our social calendar to provide events for our 3000 members at the three major counties in the Gold Coast Region. During that time I have received articles from our members that I was unable to print because the current events
Roger Fabel- Editor
needed space to be reported. Well guess what, now is the time that the member articles get to make an appearance. I hope this will show our members how important their articles are and that they will be published. I hope when you read them that you will be encouraged to share your Porsche stories with us. Last month you got insight into volunteering at the 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race from one of our first time volunteers. This month we have two great articles from two of our members
that I hope you enjoy. You will also see more articles as we have to think outside of our normal reporting agenda. I always welcome your articles. Let us know how you are coming up with creative ideas to fill the time of being inside while the outside environment becomes safe. Next month we will have a nice article on SIM Racing and I hope a few more topics. Please be safe and send your ideas along with articles and photos. Thank you for your support,

The Porsche Cult by Lee Walton, GCR member Joining the Cult-The First Six Months It started out as a poster.....in high school, I admired the shape, performance and overall lines of the Porsche 911 Carrera. There was something compelling about the back windows, the lack of a front grill and the fact that it was air cooled. Even as a teenager, among the Tiger Beat photos was a poster of the Porsche. It remained in the back of my mind for many years through marriage, raising kids, moving from Canada to Chicago and even last year when I eventually moved to Florida. I have always thought of myself as a “car girl” and enjoyed a spirited drive in all the cars I have owned. But the bug got worse when I saw a Car Gurus advertisement for a black 2001 Boxster

located only a few miles south. The car looked great in the photos and I called and made a quick appointment to check on the car. It was mid-November and the weather here in South Florida was perfect for a test drive. It was clean, but needed a few things, including a tune-up, oil change, and a new lid to the center console. The seats were completely trashed, but overall, she seemed mechanically in good shape. Most importantly, she had the other things I needed, including a stick shift, convertible top and good tires. I liked the car but felt the need to get a second opinion and so the seller gave me the name of her mechanic who serviced the car. I called Kris D’Agostino, of Tech 9 Automotive and got his feedback.......good solid car, no leaks, may need a tune-up, and new hood shocks, front and rear. The leather seats were up to me and he also suggested that I do the tune-up and oil change right away. I made the leap and bought the car and seven days later, it was in my garage. Shortly after I took possession, I drove her around and decided to immediately have the tune-up and to install a new battery. What a difference, the car was smoother and more powerful she purred like a kitten. I was in love! Frolic, as I had now named her, was nimble, responsive and had all the torque a girl could ask for. She started easily and ran better than when I first bought her. Then the water pump started leaking … Kris quickly swapped out the old one for a new one and I was back in business. Now to test my 18-yearold beauty…ROAD TRIP!!! On impulse she and I headed up state and beyond on one of the best road trips possible - a trip from Boynton Beach to New Orleans. It blew out the cobwebs; I arrived in New Orleans that evening after 10 hours of driving with the car breathing easily. I now realized that

the Porsche “bug” had gotten me good. While in New Orleans, however, I lost the brake light switch. Thank goodness for my PCA membership I was able to go online and find a local shop NolaSport and have it replaced. Linda and the team at NolaSport were fantastic we talked everything Porsche including racing. While there, I found replacement leather for the seats and ordered them online (not factory but a third of the price) from the hotel in New Orleans to be delivered to my home a week later. The return ride to south Florida was equally uneventful but nonetheless exciting and I drove the car the way it was meant to be driven, and maneuvered around the trucks and slow-moving traffic through Alabama and into Florida. The leather seats were waiting for me when I returned and I anxiously awaited the three days for the installation until the car was ready (Custom Auto Trim of Delray) I only regret that I don’t have more upholstery to replace because Dean is a character). The car was coming together with new seats (it even had the new car smell and I added new color coordinated Coco Mats to the car to finish the interior. I surrender…the “bug” got me good (bordering on cult status) as proven by the fact I just ordered the Weltmeister short shifter kit that Kris will be installing this week to reduce shift throw and play in my shifter. When does it end? My Porsche experience has been coming together with a great car that is no longer neglected but fully utilized. I am lucky to find a quality mechanic in Kris and his work has paid off. This car is a blast to drive, reliable and great to look at. I joined Gold Coast PCA to meet like-minded members of the cult, and have acquired a collection of tee shirts, hats, and assorted stuff from the Parade. I even have a carbon fiber license plate frame that says “Porsche, there is no substitute”. I am doing the Porsche and Pancakes events, wine tour, Sanibel run and can’t wait for the Tail of the Dragon trip in October. I look forward to be an active member of the club. Yes, I am a member of the cult.

Through the Vintage Lens by Joan Leder
A
s the saying goes, “There is no Substitute!” So is the historical reference from days passed and futures to come. I always had a passion for Motorsports, from learning all the variances between the Thunderbird, Cougar and Mustang to drag racing the SEARS lawnmower with my equestrian friend in our neighborhood streets. Then came the Jaguar XKE and then my first heartthrob, the Porsche rally coupe. Well before 1970, I was introduced to the Porsche 356 coupe by my sister’s husband. He would sail over the bumpiest set of Railroad tracks near the local coal supply house. When I asked him why he soared over the rails at greater than 35 miles per hour, he told me it was easier for the car to handle the bumps at that speed. He told me that flying over them was better than jiggling the car from side-toside, loosening any nuts and bolts the old baby needed to grasp. Little did I know he meant business. Of course, his Mercedes gull-wing rarely left the garage and was not as much fun as the twisting turns from New Jersey’s Rumson to Red Bank shorelines. And so, I was hooked. The Beatles White Album and “dayglow” colors of the Porsche 914 bent my mind in 1970 when I learned that owning a new Porsche was somewhere near my reach. “Sure,” said my dad, “when you finish college, I will buy you a car.” So I set my sights on making my way through high school when I met my husband, Scott Leder, who shared this passion of Motorsports, including me into driving and repairing his vehicles. Scott and I dated through high school and college. His high school had an auto-shop class where Scott changed oil, replaced brakes and rebuilt transmissions in his British cars, including Triumph TR-4, TR-4A IRS, and 6-cylinder TR-250. Our drives to the beach meant having screwdriver and wrench on-call with frequent stops along the way to use them. These we called our “poor man’s car” because it seems as
16

though we rebuilt them each time they were driven. I learned a lot about bleeding brakes, repairing ragtops and checking gauges. Scott taught me to drive in his dad’s VW Bug and it was history in the making. We were hooked on German Engineering! Always looking to upgrade his daily driver, Scott found a chocolate brown 1600 Porsche 356 Cabriolet at a local garage.
Joan loving her 356 Cabriolet I think someone left it there without paying the bill, so we got a smokin’ deal on it. (I will not tell you exactly how much he paid, but it was less than $2,000.00!) We saw New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia in that car, traversing highways and mountain curves with the white canvas top hidden behind us. We even took the 12-string guitar on our camping trip into “Almost Heaven” country. Scott and I joined the Jersey Shore Region of Porsche Club of America where we tried our hands (eyes and feet) at the road rally events. We attended the Schneider-Nelson monthly events on Route 35 in Ocean, New Jersey. It was truly a love affair of Porsche nuts and bolts! We rebuilt floorboards, replaced a taillight lens, and managed to learn how to change the oil in an air-cooled Porsche …

May 2020
We drove out to California for the summer of 1975. My sister and her husband moved there, after selling the two 356es from the 1950’s, the green 912 and of course, the Mercedes. Scott and I would often drive through Laguna, up and down the Pacific Coast Highway and through the streets of La Jolla in their Targa top 911. What beautiful curves! And the turns were fun, too. We married in 1979; I told Scott I wanted him to use our wedding “purse” for race school. In 1988, with two young children who fit into the back seat of our 944, we headed up to Lime Rock Park in Connecticut for our first Porsche Club Drivers Education. Mike Bavaro of Bodymotion was a long-time friend from Scott’s hometown and was happy to take Scott for a “spin” around Big Bend. Back then, Digital Photography was painstaking, and video cameras were as heavy as the Triumph cars we used to drive. Needless to say, that initiated “track junkie fever” for both of us. Our 944 was a straight, unchipped vehicle that taught us the secret of momentum. It was a front engine, water-cooled car with rear-wheel drive. From Connecticut to Pennsylvania to Upstate New York Seneca Lake, we spent as much time on the track as possible. Scott would entrance himself in Formula One race videos of Watkins Glen International, studying each turn in the 2.45 miles of the road circuit. Look ahead, brake hard, approach, turn in, accelerate as you look through, ride the berm at the apex, exit, track out and go… The Legend was born – signed off first day at Watkins Glen! I can still hear the sound of the engine, braking, and acceleration in those videos! The time came to upgrade. Our 1986 silver 911 was the first of our rear-engine track cars. We excelled at Drivers Ed to the point where I handed Scott the keys. Both of us could not be in the Red run group in the same car. At that point, we mutually longed for seat-time. Know-
ing his talents and my desire for racing were high and that we still had 2 college educations to consider with one parent to minimize risk for unemployment, I switched to caressing the camera instead of the race car. We foraged through, walking the myriad of US road circuits to learn each unique turn attribute. Scott took me out for a lunchtime charity ride in our white Carrera at Summit Point Raceway, where I immediately asked him to bring me back to the paddock. The “Track Fever” was hitting me. I could not bear another moment salivating to the hugs of the carousel. Our first real taste at PCA ClubSport Racing. He literally had the street car built for the track. I remember using white duct tape on the front spoiler (thanks to a local ground hog) during his Instructor-Student session at Watkins Glen, before his next race run group.

Our Grey 964 at Watkins Glen From the White Carrera to the gray 964 (oh what a baby!), Scott reveled in the art of racing. He teamed up with Ross Bentley in Speed Secrets, and was Daytona speedway look-out for Team Seattle charity race raising money for

Turn 5 in the woods, I ran for cover as a blue Mustang squealed into the tire wall just five feet from my lens. A little more aggressive than my liking. At least at the PCA race when the GT3 broke a control arm on approach to the carousel, I had plenty of room to run, as the car headed straight into the trees. Luckily, the maintenance crew was nearby. Nice to know that both incidents only saw metal, not human damage. Both drivers were back in the race next session. Scott’s passion runs clean in the sport of Auto Racing. He follows the events of coaching clients like Sean Gibbons. He championed his #87 Cayman P2 at Sebring and mentored young drivers through the Intercontinental Trophy Cup series and young Bodymotion crew turned Champion like Trent Hindman. I am fortunate to have interviewed young Trent on my Jersey Girl Jam radio show after his first IMSA support Race winning in the Bodymotion Porsche Cayman #12. Our current 1970 orange 914-6 has had its own race history. Originally built for the road circuit at Zotz Racing, the “Orange Julius” has seen a few tracks including the HSR Classic 24 in 2016. At that time KMW Motorsports was supporting the “Orange Julius” as the #76 in its wonder around the 3.57-mile Daytona International Speedway. On November 12, 2016, In the 3rd qualifying run, Danny Burstein placed 5th with a best lap time of 2:13.808. On November 11, 2016, that week in the Bob Woodman Tires Int’l/ Amer Challenge, Danny placed 11th overall and 2nd in class with best lap time at 2:13.152 after Continued on page 22

gridding 18th with lap time of 2:15.303. Danny drove the #76 in the 1-hour HSR Endurance at Savannah 1.965-mile Harbour Race Course on October 29, 2016 with a best lap time of 1:25.148, placing 3rd overall with the Endurance Race Best Speed of 83.079 mph. Back into the Zotz Racing, Inc. team, now our “Tigger” is with Scott as the driver for its revival ***** at Daytona International Speedway. Yes, the bumps there differ from those at Sebring in our 964, Cayman 987 and 988, and Spec Boxter. Tigger is learning how Scott is quick to respond, alert to mechanical changes in his vehicle. Transforming from #76 “Orange Julius” to #56 “Tigger” has its challenges,
but also has its rewards. Debuting in the PCA OktoberFast at Daytona in October of 2019, Scott saw his best lap time at 2:14.295 for Sprint 1. During Sprint 2, he was quick to find run-off at turn 5 when the gear shift came off into his hand. Talk about pulling 2nd! Scott saw his #56 climb the Daytona International Speedway Leaderboard from 15 to 14 to 13 to 12, before the weakest link, transmission, failed. Going from no 5th to no 4th to let’s bring it in still meant he had increased his speed and standing. The November 13, 2019 Classic 24 Group A Race 1 saw Scott’s best lap time down to 2.12.108. And though he only had 1 lap to go before the transmission let go in

Race 4 of the Classic 24, Scott managed to rank 22nd overall in the cumulative standings for the HSR Classic 24 of 2019. As we know with bodies and systems, each vintage part needs a succession plan. Tigger is helping us find ours. Celebrating the 50-year anniversary of action for this sports car designed by Porsche, for next year, Tigger will be transformed into the bouncy trouncing happy machine that will love Sebring’ surface challenges.

Historical perspectives ……by Steve Kidd, GCR Historian You can thank this article on the Coronavirus as this was one of my many projects waiting to get underway, that finally got started. My goal over the next few articles is to give our members an insight as to what PCA was like back in the fifties, sixties and seventies. This article and those that follow will mostly use early Porsche Panorama publications as the go to information source. The earliest Porsche Panorama in my collection is the December 1958 issue. Noted on the cover as Volume III, Number 12 and being a holiday issue has “Merry Christmas” and the PCA logo as well as the logos from four other Porsche Clubs around the world. This issue is black and white, 16 pages including the front and back cover, and of course the original size that fits in a 356 glovebox. Page 2 lists the PCA “Clubs” which were chartered at the time of which there were twelve. Those clubs (regions) included Potomac, Eastern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey, Connecticut Westchester, Central New York, Gulf Coast, Chicago/Milwaukee, San Diego, Southeast Michigan, Rocky Mountain, Pen/Ohio, and Metropolitan New York. Also listed were eleven areas titled “PCA Regions not yet organized” one of which was Miami, Florida (and the only Florida area to have such a title). The PCA Executive Office was listed as “William J. Scholar in Alexandria Virginia”. There were six officers listed including the President, Execu-
tive Vice President, First Vice President, Second Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. There were only four advertisements in the entire issue with full page ads for Pirelli Tires, Continental Tires, Manhattan Imported Cars, and a half-page ad for VDO Instruments. Interestingly there were only a few size tires listed in the Pirelli ad, ranging in price from $27.66 to $33.46 with only two street sizes available, those being 5.60 x 15 and 5.00 x 16 and all tires were tube type with a hermetic tube costing around $4.00. Pirelli and Continental advertisements list their location in New York while Manhattan Imported Cars was in Fairfax Virginia and VDO Instruments was in Detroit Michigan. There were two pages devoted to an article on Doctor Ferdinand Porsche which was reprinted with permission from the Christian Science Monitor. Some questions from Parade Tech Quizzes seemed to come from this article including the year (1932) that saw his most important invention. The answer, of course, is the torsion bar suspension. The article also included the time when Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was jailed after World War II. What many people don’t know is that an Italian firm was hired to build a championship race car and the money raised from pre payments was used to ransom Dr. Porsche in 1947. The Italian firm received the now famous Cisitalia Racer as their part of the deal. This article also includes close to a full
page on “News from the Regions”. The classified section consisted of one car for sale: a 1958 coupe with 7,000 miles and an asking price of $3,390. The pictures of Porsches consist of 356’s, as that was the only model available back then. One of the longer articles details the plans for the Fourth Annual Porsche Parade in 1959 to be held in Nippersink Wisconsin. Several tech articles are included in this issue with information pertaining to an improved Porsche oil cooler and Hirth crankshafts and wheel balancing. As PCA was still a very new organization in 1958, new members to the club were listed by state. Two members from Florida were listed: Donald Bell of Bradenton, and Charles J. Wick of Delray Beach, who later became one of the founding members of Gold Coast. Another highlight was five items of PCA merchandise for sale which included lepel pins, patches, emblems, large pins and ashtrays, ranging in price from $1.60 to $2.10. As many of you were not even born in 1958, you can see some major differences between the PCA of the fifties compared to modern PCA. While so much is different, the important things are forever the same, those being the cars, the people, the enthusiasm, the camaraderie and volunteers. Hopefully you enjoyed this little bit of PCA history and the next articles will add a little humor and spice to liven things up. Until next month, Steve.

Gold Coast Region Drivers Education Update by Mike Roblin, DE Chair
At this time we are continuing to move forward with our June event with the hope that the State of Florida is reopened to our recreational activities by that time. In anticipation of this, we will be mindful of our responsibility to maintain social distancing and all other protective measures necessary to keep everyone safe while still being able to have fun in our cars while at the track. We have opened the event on clubregistration.net and the event ID is 815526. For now we have opened the registration as a no cost event so that we can keep everyone in the loop for the latest developments once the stay-at-home orders are lifted in South Florida. Once we get the green light, we will amend the event registration to allow for payment of the event fees. We urge you to sign up for the event so that we can best stay in touch with you during this challenging time and look forward to seeing you at Homestead Speedway on June 6th-7th!
What is HPDE? HPDE is a High Performance Driver’s Education Program designed to allow drivers the opportunity to drive their cars in a safe environment at high speeds without the risk of getting speeding tickets! As a beginner or intermediate driver we provide you with a friendly, competent instructor who will be in the car with you to give you pointers and information to help you get around the track in a safe and fun way. It is an experience not to be missed!
too? Wouldn’t that be great? That is exactly what happens at our HPDE Events. No smartphones, emails, texts, etc to distract you and you are surrounded by people who are doing the same and driving at the same experience level as you are.
What about my car, can it handle track driving? All Porsche cars and in fact, most cars built today are perfectly capable of being driven at higher than highway speeds on a racetrack. Your car was thoroughly tested at the racetrack during it’s development at the factory and Porsche even offers similar track driving experiences at the Porsche Experience Centers in Atlanta and Los Angeles using cars just like yours with NO modifications. That being said, we do require that you get your car inspected prior to the event at one of the many technical inspection facilities (dealers and several trusted independent mechanics) just to check over everything in your car to make sure it is current on all maintenance, that your safety systems are working correctly, that your brakes are fresh, and that you have sufficient tread remaining on your tires.
Is it safe? Let’s take your typical daily commute for example: How many distracted drivers do you see around you every day during your drive? Is everyone paying close attention to what is going on around them? No. Texting while driving, driving while putting on makeup or shaving and using your knee to hold the steering wheel? All of these are common things we see every single day. What if you were 100% focused on driving and everyone else around you was

How much track time do we get, will I be out on track with everyone else at the same time? All drivers are categorized based on their skill level and are separated into one of 4 groups. Beginner/Novice (Green), Intermediate (Blue), Solo/Advanced (Yellow), and Instructors (Red). Each group is sent out for approximately 25 minutes at a time and we rotate each group throughout the day giving everyone the chance to get on track in their respective groups/sessions. Our format gives each driver four separate 25 minute sessions each day of the event with breaks in-between to allow you time to cool off, rehydrate, and spend time with your instructor to refine all the new skills you are learning. Gold Coast Region will be hosting our next event using the road course at Homestead Miami Speedway on June 6th and 7th, 2020. Entries will cost $450 for both days and $325 for one day. Everyone will be required to provide their own helmet with an SA2010 or SA2015 rating (Motorcycle helmets with only a DOT rating are not acceptable). Any questions about HPDE or the June event, please email me dechair@ goldcoastregion.org or call me at 407922-5704 and I’ll be happy to answer any additional questions you might have.
