President’s Corner Steve Kidd - President
We dodged a few bullets in September and made it thru the most active part of hurricane season, but South Florida is not out of the woods yet. Be hurricane prepared and stay safe should a catastrophic situation head our way. I know quite a few of our members have helped with hurricane relief efforts in the Bahamas and for that a huge thank-you is in order. September had all the usual breakfasts and socials plus an Auto X at Sebring and tour of the Larry Wilson collection of exotic cars coupled with a Bar b Que lunch... See separate articles on each of these activities. Also, while not a PCA event, Dottie,Carolyn and Steve visited the Palm Beach Mall cars and coffee and set up a table to meet Porsche owners and spread the word about PCA. For those that don’t know, PCA has a slick new phone app, available to region officers, where PCA juniors can be added to members profiles and requests for co members can be sent directly to the PCA National office. As I write this article I can tell you lots of great activities are planned for Q4...these include all the usual Porsche and Pancakes on the 1st Saturday of the month, with breakfasts at 9 locations and our 3rd Thursday socials at 4 different locations....other planned activities include, but are not limited to; October: AutoX at Buckingham, Oktoberfest celebration at Biergarten and tour to Fontana Dam N.C November : Porsches by the Bay Concours/lunch, a stone crab drive, car museum tour and AutoX December : Holiday party, Porsche Parade of Presents (childrens hospitals) and possible swap meet.

Speaking of Holiday Party this year’s shindig will be FUN...with some new and some traditional activities. One of the traditional activities will be presenting year end awards.,,,, for which I’m requesting member assistance to suggest names for each award in the following categories.... With a brief description of criteria GCR Enthusiast of the Year An individual who has participated in a wide range of PCA activities throughout the year and taken leadership roles in some of these, has served as an officer or director or chair or appointed position, has played a role in activity planning, development and organization, has supported the promotion and growth of the region, as well as charity/community service efforts. GCR Family of the Year A couple with or without children that have family members (individually or as a team) that have participated in a multitude of Region,Zone or National activities, has chaired or co chaired events and or served in management or administrative roles in the region, has made contributions that could be categorized as above and beyond the call of duty. GCR Rookie of the year An individual or couple that is new to PCA (joined within the last few years) and has participated in a variety of events and volunteered to help when and where needed, has shown an interest in taking on new roles in the region and possibly serving as an elected official or chair, has introduced fresh ideas and innovative ways to approach region challenges. Additionally there is a President’s Cup...Presented to the Region President for service as the highest ranking regional official...and not every year, but when the situation presents itself the

Dumkoff award, for an act of exceptional folly. An example of a past recipient was a member who dropped his Porsche key in the toilet while in a hotel at a major PCA event & things did not end well. Know an individual or couple that are candidates for these awards??? If so let me know. Communicate your suggestions to me at steve_ kidd@bellsouth.net. ….Or just give me call....no later than November 20th to allow time to get the awards prepared before the Holiday Party on 12/7/19. By the time you read this article there should still be time to vote for Officer/Director candidates for 2020. Please review the bios published in the September Kassette and on the website. Members will be e-mailed a unique invitation to vote electronically, sent to the e-mail address of record. This will come from Election Runner, our independent election vendor. It should take less than a minute to vote, Also,on the ballot will be an opportunity to vote on a major revision to our region’s bylaws. While the look and feel of the proposed bylaws is similar to our current bylaws, there are some significant revisions. To start with, PCA National encourages regions to update their bylaws every 5 years and provided a region template to use. This new template was our starting point however provisions unique to GCR,such as electronic voting, were inserted. Some of the changes include, but are not limited to, provisions against conflict of interest as well as standardization of regional committees and term limits. Please review the proposed bylaws on the website. The final draft of the proposed new bylaws was approved by the GCR Board of Directors and now needs to be approved by the GCR membership before it can become effective.......Please vote if you haven’t done so yet. Until next month......Steve

4000 Miles in a 911 Turbo with Wife and Plenty of Junk Food
From the Members:
by Paul S. Inselman, DC
My childhood friend of fifty years was hosting his daughter’s wedding in Ghent, New York. What better way to get there than to drive a 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo? Hurricane Dorian decided to bear down on South Florida as Mary and I began packing. So, to complicate matters we had to take in all of the outdoor furniture, pull our shutters and have that lovely angst feeling as to whether or not we would have a home to come back to (One of the South Florida Gifts of living in paradise) Now you may think that you cannot fit a lot of stuff in a 911 Turbo, but respectively you would be wrong. I did get one quick lesson the “frunk” is a bit smaller than my previous 911 S so we did have to make some adjustments. First adjustment was we could no longer fit two suitcases in the frunk. To compensate we put one suitcase in the frunk along with a battery charger, extra quart of oil, a first aid kit, tire inflator and a pair of shoes for the wedding and all of our hanging clothes neatly packed in a garment bag.

We put the two rear seats down and underneath the seats we were able to put a community toilet bag/overnight bag, a shoe bag (Mary does not travel lightly in the shoe department-LOL), a suitcase on top of the folded rear seats, jackets for the north country and all of the junk food and waters that would make any eleven-year old child drool with envy. We also packed a roll of toilet paper (just in case) and wetwipes and lots of napkins for road-trip eating (the only time I allow food in my car). In the driver’s door panel, I had paper maps, a flashlight, glass wipes for the bug massacre that was to follow and an EZ Pass so the northern states can suck money out of me effortlessly in repayment for driving their pot-hole roads. On the front windshield was the latest escort radar detector to warn me if the car decided to go past the speed limit. I am sure all of you other Porsche drivers can relate to this. Granted, we are all law-abiding citizens but for some reason Porsche’s seem to automatically gravitate toward German Speed limits. I just wanted to be prepared in case the car did something funky like that on its own. A few days before our trip, I had Mike and Taylor at TuneRS give the car a thorough checkup to ensure that we would have no problems on the road. As usual, they did a fantastic job. Our last road trip was in May where we drove the entire Southeastern United States. That pre-trip check-up found us putting new brakes and tires on the car to make it road-ready so fortunately, nothing was needed prior to this trip. For power I used the cigarette lighter plug for the radar detector; the lower power supply at the passenger side feet for one phone; and, the USB cord in the center console for the second phone. As a backup I bought a dual plug for the cigarette lighter with USB ports that could handle anything. It is a bit bulky so we opted to use our original set-up which worked great. The newer Porsches allow you to put a sim card directly into the car so you have your own independent network. For us it is well worth the annual cost because it gives real time traffic reports and re-

routing based on current conditions which was a “life-saver” several times. Plus, you could watch TV on your phone or laptop without burning through your phone data. At 4:30 am on August 29th, the GPS destination was entered, Waze was opened on one of our phones and we were officially off. We have found the beauty of leaving so early is that by the time 5:00pm rolls around you have put many, many trafficfree miles behind you. Since we are both night-owls we ended up driving the first day until 11:00pm so 18.5 hours later we had gone 1100 miles and stayed a little north of Baltimore the first night. Now people think that we are crazy to do so many miles in one day; but let me explain why we were effortlessly able to do so many miles. Porsche has created an absolute masterpiece. The car is super-comfortable. We experienced NO road fatigue, or back pain. We got out and stretched every couple of hours, and, went for our usual Cracker Barrel Road Experiences. Here is the other crazy thing about
the car. Would you believe with the cruise control on 85(shhh…don’t tell anyone), air-conditioning on, and the car loaded for bear that we got 27 miles to the gallon? That is crazy-talk! A sports car that is comfortable and gets great gas mileage too? While we are on the discussion of long-haul drives, let me give you my secret recipe. It is called a Cafe’ ChocoMocoLoco. Here is the recipe. Go into McDonalds and order a large iced coffee with two shots of espresso and ½ of the cup filled with chocolate syrup. Then, to
top it off have them add tons of chocolate chips. When I drink one of those I start talking really, really fast; my eyes open really wide; and I can compete with any long-haul trucker on the planet. Plus, it would make any eleven-year old blush with envy and my heart does not race like with energy drinks. We really lucked out because we encountered no traffic, rain, police, accidents, or breakdowns (more to come on breakdowns later) the entire trip. On Friday 9/30/19 we pulled into Great Barrington, MA which is where the block of

rooms were located for the wedding. The wedding was 40 minutes away in Ghent, NY but the bride and groom felt that Great Barrington would be a cooler place to stay. They were right. It was now that I realized what we Floridians lose when it comes to driving our Porsches…curvy, twisting, mountainous “Porsche Roads”. Man was I in my glory! Top down, wind blowing through my six hairs, we really enjoyed those roads! I got to visit and walk the property of a summer camp that I attended as a child (memory lane) and we got to take in the sites and eat in some cool restaurants.

One of the highlights for me was we got to visit the Old Trinity Church from Arlo Guthrie’s Alice’s Restaurant Album and movie. The church is now the Guthrie Foundation headquarters and hosts musical events and community services for those less fortunate. We got a personal tour and took in the rich history of this wonderful structure that was built in 1829 and re-furbished in the 70’s. Next day we went to the wedding which allowed us to drive back-wood country roads. The sites were beautiful and the car loved the spirited drive. Having owned somewhere around 12 Porsches, I can honestly say that the Turbo is my favorite. It is so smooth, elegant and crazy powerful. It is like an extension of your eyes and arms. The car just knows where to go with no effort at all. The only scary part was driving those roads at night. The last thing that I wanted to meet up with were two eyeballs glowing in the night. We slowed down considerably and fortunately no deer made their appearance. The next few days we meandered through upstate New York visiting friends and family and ended up on Long Island visiting my parents, sister and some dear, dear friends. It is tough to find handcar washes but we managed to find one each time the car needed a cleaning. One thing I noticed in driving all those miles. We live in a bubble here in South Florida. Porsche’s and other Hi-Line cars are common-place and a dime a dozen. However, it is vastly different once you get out of out of our area. The head-turns and people zooming to get a better look at the car was pretty interesting. There were times that we did not see another Porsche of any model for days. Just a little sidenote observation. We were pretty nervous about the storm

the whole way up because our kids were home with the dog and that uncertain, uneasy feeling of will it or won’t it hit us was with us the whole way. Fortunately, Dorian never came so we were able to breathe easy for our trip back home. Since I wasn’t’ sure of the damage in the Carolinas and Georgia, I decided to stay off of Route 95 and take Route 81 through the mountains of Pennsylvania which was another real treat. Our first stop was Hershey, PA. Now the last thing that you ever want to experience when traveling in a Porsche with center-lock wheels is a breakdown. If that happens, you are getting towed to the nearest Porsche dealer which could be 100 miles away. When we pulled out to drive to dinner, we heard a horrible metal-on-metal grinding and clanking sound coming from the left side of the car. My heart went into over-drive and I didn’t even have a Café’ ChocoMocoLoco! Mary was pretty calming and suggested I call Mike or Taylor from TuneRS. What could they tell me on a Sunday night from 1500 miles away? So I decided not to bother them and put a positive spin that if we have to breakdown at least we are stuck in the sweetest place on earth in a beautiful hotel. As we were eating dinner, I googled “I hear a clanking and metal on metal sound coming from my wheels in my 2017 Porsche 911 Turbo.” Would you believe I got dozens of hits? The forums said it could be anything from a broken brake line to a leaf caught between the pad and rotor. Mary and I bolted out of the restaurant, got our flashlights and began our sleuth adventure. Well…my wife’s eagle eyes spotted a teeny, tiny branch and leaf in the rear left wheel brake pad. I carefully and surgically removed it and viola we were in Porsche heaven again! I cannot believe that such a

tiny piece of debris could make all of that horrible noise but we were all clear. Thank you, Google and Forum writers! The rest of the trip was great. We went to Colonial Williamsburg and then decided that we missed our own bed so we decided to end our trip with me driving 968 miles myself which brought us back to sunny Florida. Again, no road fatigue, back pain, tickets, accidents, or break downs. Another great trip for the books. The next day the car was detailed and the oil was changed at TuneRS, and we settled back into our normal routine. My suggestion. If you have a Porsche, you owe it to the car to take it on a road trip. It will thank you and the memories that you make will last a life-time. If you are interested in caravanning on a drive to California next summer let me know. Thinking of a Desert Southwest California trip. That should be fun. Happy and safe Porschering.

Gold Coast Region visits the Larry Wilson Car Collection By Steve & Dottie Kidd On September 28th, 100 lucky members made a trip to Jupiter, Florida to tour the Larry Wilson Collection of Porsches and other dream cars. According to Region President Steve Kidd, this collection is hidden away in a bunker like building and contains some of the most amazing street and racing Porsches, as well as other interesting and historically significant sports cars. What makes this collection unique is that the owner, Larry

Wilson, actually races or has raced most of his Porsche race cars. In addition to 125+ cars there is automobile and racing memorabilia that adds a special flavor to this collection. Our thanks again to Dave, Larry and their entire staff for their hospitality and Dottie, Carolyn Jonathan and other GCR members for their help . After seeing all the cars, the group was treated to bar-b-que supplied by Burnt Offerings, the same caterer that

provided food for the Boca Parade tours that came to the Wilson Collection. The event also included announcements of coming activities, door prizes and special gift of thanks for Larry Wilson. There were members from at least four different PCA regions who attended, and everyone is looking forward to the next time GCR has the opportunity to visit this venue.

Autocross Update
After our summer break, the GCR Autocross series resumed on Saturday September 7th at Sebring. This was event #5 in what we hope to be a 7 event series for 2019. Event 5 proved to be unseasonably warm. However those that participated were rewarded with 10 runs and a technically challenging course. While some may feel Sebring is a bit too far, keep in mind that for these event we usually can do a tour of the actual racetrack on our break and the surface is grippy concrete. For results of this and all other GCR autoX , please visit the GCR website. While this was a Gold Coast event, we had participants from 3 other PCA regions come to our Sebring event ….The furthest was from Citrus region. This was truly a multi-regional event! As many of you know, we have been struggling with locating new AX sites this year due to the loss of the BBT lot. This is another call for help to members to help us locate a new AX site. Ideally this would be an airport
runway or taxi way, big parking lot with no parking bumpers such as those in sports complexes/arenas, malls and some government facilities. If you know of such a place let us know...and please try to find contact information for the person responsible for making the decisions. Ideally sites come about due to someone knowing someone....we get an “in” and build a relationship. Additionally a site should be no more that 1.5 hour drive from the North Broward/South Palm Beach.. Event #6 will be at Buckingham airport in Lehigh Acres, just east of Ft Myers on October 13th with Everglades Region as the lead. This is where Gulfcoast Autocrossers have run for over 20 years and is considered the best autoX site in Florida. If you have never run at this site, please give it a try. Due to the vast amount of space, courses can be faster and still allow for a big safety margin. Event #7 is still up in the air, but could be at Sebring along with the Suncoast DE.

If you missed the Porsche Parade autoX at PBIR (held on the racetrack...not the go cart track) you can see the results and pictures on the Porsche Parade website. Lots of GCR AutoX regulars trophied, and of course our very only Rad Delgado won Top Time of the Day in his GT3RS ... This is where the best of the best competed and it was refreshing to see how well GCR team AutoX did. On a final note ….Save the date 2/1/2020....This will be the Club Race AutoX at Sebring, which usually attracts many of the best autocrossers who compete in a Zone challenge event....See you there....Steve News, reminders and 2019 updates: • Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. • Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional

adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. • Our 2019 series is planned to be 6 or 7 events. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the

same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented. • No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. • Questions…..call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196

For 2019 our advise is please register early. As a reward, early registrants will get the best price. However, those registering the last week before the event will see an increase in event registration price. While we typically do not allow on-site registration, if we do, your registration fee will increase to a minimum of $55.The best advise is to register early, as some events do have caps and we charge a premium fee if you register 1 week or less from the event date.

As of February 2019, the Chateau Elan Hotel & Conference Center became known as Seven Sebring Raceway Hotel.
Our new look celebrates the hotel’s motorsport roots, as well as its high-speed future. With automotive highlights throughout its newly renovated spaces, the overall design is comfortable, yet classy. Our Sebring hotel will be the ideal destination for guests looking for a genuine automotive adventure at a facility that is full of motorsports history. The hotel name, “Seven” is inspired by its location on the Sebring International Raceway circuit – Turn 7. Like a dependable friend, guests can and will always turn to Seven. The Sebring hotel will continue to be its guests’ second home as they return year after year. All of our 123 rooms have been renovated. All the carpeting has been removed and replaced with flooring. We have updated the Guest rooms by minimizing certain features and giving them a more open feeling, as well as replaced bedding. All interior hall carpeting has been replaced with new.
We have two new restaurants, Sunrise at Seven for breakfast and APEX at Seven featuring both craft burgers and beverages. Enjoy the evening while sitting in our new outside seating area or challenge a friend to a game of chess on our life size board. sevensebringhotel.com @sevensebringhotel
