2022 might be coming to a close, but that also means the holiday season is officially upon us and the Holiday Issue of The Circuit is out. A great feature in this year’s edition is the Shopping Guide full of Beach Chamber members to support. Plus, Small Business Saturday is November 26 so use this guide to shop local.

The holiday season to me is about eating delicious food, spending time with family and giving back to make a difference. When I took over as President/CEO in 2016, one of my annual goals was to give back to our community. We have done that every year and this time was no different. In 2022, the Beach Chamber awarded a portion of our event proceeds to Man in the Sea Museum, Beach Care Services, FSU Panama City Foundation, Covenant Care, and Gulf Coast State College Foundation. We also held a school supply drive for The Boys and Girls Club, volunteered at Gulf Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, and our Annual Toy Drive supplies hundreds of toys for the Bay Co. Sheriff’s Office and Panama City Beach Police Department. Our members enjoy being part of an organization that gives back to their own community.

This time last year I was writing about the amazing growth happening with the Beach Chamber hitting 1,350 members. I’m thrilled to report we hit another record in 2022 with over 1,450 members. As we continue to reach Bay County and beyond, I want to thank both our longstanding members and new members for your support. Your commitment allows our Chamber to fulfill our mission and help our community.

I want to thank my Chamber team—Jena Liles, Shannon Richmond, Missy Holmes, Tiffiney Castleberry, Carley Morgan, and Anna Cooper for all your hard work this year. I also want to thank my Board of Directors, led by Chairwoman Catherine Collins, for their leadership and support.

The City of Panama City Beach is sponsoring its second annual Veterans Day Sunset Ceremony and Parade at the Veterans Memorial near Aaron Bessant Park. The event begins with a 3 pm parade through the center of Pier Park, which will include dozens of patriotically decorated golf carts and our most notable guests — our American Veterans! American flags will be distributed along the parade route. There will be a ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial immediately following the parade, where representatives from local veterans groups will be in attendance.

The only constant is change for many organizations, and the U.S. Air Force is no exception. Beginning Nov. 1, the 325th Force Support Squadron Career Assistance Advisor position will change to Airmen Development Advisor.

This career modification aims to structure the position more with traditional professional military education entities within force development.

“The main reason was to align us up more with PME, and…PME instructors,” said Master Sgt. Cory Bressler, 325th FSS CAA, soon to be ADA. “Our main goal for all of our professional development is to bridge that PME gap.”

ADAs will manage a wide range of programs and responsibilities for both enlisted and officers including running the First Term Airman Course, executing NCO and Senior NCO professional enhancement seminars, giving informed decision briefings and more mandatory requirements.

ADAs will also push for non-required courses for senior enlisted leaders, squadron and flight commanders and John C. Maxwell leadership seminars, as part of their mission goals.

“Our main goal is to inform leadership and supervisors on professional development opportunities, and retention and retraining,” said Bressler. “I have to stay up to date on all the different retaining and

career opportunities that are available for airmen and officers to give them the information they need to make [career] decisions.”

Bressler is a career civil engineering airman with almost 14 years timein-service who has been filling special positions to broaden his skillset including serving as an executive assistant and Silver Flag instructor. What drew Bressler to apply for the position was experience as well as having gone through the process of expanding career goals himself as an airman.

ADAs will also deal with retention and retraining with enlisted and officers by helping find other opportunities.

“People out there don’t know how to find those and that’s what I deal with the most,” said Bressler. “I will show them the process of how to actually apply. I will walk them through [the process], making sure all their requirements line up… what to expect and what to look out for.”

Additionally, ADAs will introduce and educate interested individuals to the Air Force Enlisted Classification Directory and the Retrain Advisory List, when applicable. Both resources support the Enlisted Retraining Program, but can be helpful information for officers as well.

Airmen hoping to retrain must do so within their applicable window. ADAs can help Airmen identify when their window is and how to proceed. If retraining isn’t an option, ADAs work with leaders to help fill installation local hire jobs, such as ADA and Airmen Dorm Leader,

and special duty slots. ADAs also stay up to date with commissioning opportunities.

“If someone has a question, ADAs have contacts we can reach out to,” said Bressler. “There are 93 ADAs in the Air Force, and we all talk to each other. We have all that info at our fingertips. We have direct lines of communication…and learn from each other.”

As the organization continues to adapt to current mission needs and directives, retention and retraining continue to be popular topics of conversation.

“I think the Air Force loses a lot of good people… because they don’t know that opportunities are out there for them,” said Bressler. “I like to give that knowledge and help people out. I’m almost like a guidance counselor, but for adults who are looking to do something different from what they’re doing now.”

PROVIDES ONE TEAM SUPPORT TO NUWC NEWPORT WITH PITCH COMPETITION

Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division (NSWC PCD) and HII entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) entitled Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUV) Launch and Recovery (LAR) Testing, Sept. 1, 2022.

Pharos is a new HII LAR system that was built to operate with large unmanned underwater vehicles like Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport’s Snakehead Large Displacement Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (LDUUV).

Prior to shipping Pharos to NUWC Newport, HII needed to ensure the system could accommodate Snakehead and that it was capable of ballasting, de-ballasting, and able to be recovered in a loaded condition. As a result, the NSWC PCD Unmanned Systems Test and Evaluation Team expeditiously engaged to support its CRADA partner HII and sister warfare center NUWC Newport by developing and executing a complex demonstration test event in very short order.

“NSWC PCD has a dedicated unmanned system (UxS) test and evaluation branch with the ability to apply expertise with rapid response to provide agile, effective solutions to meet mission objectives,” said Hal Rhea III, NSWC PCD Unmanned Systems Test & Evaluation Branch head. “Couple that with our ability to quickly coordinate CRADA approval and our 185,000 square miles of ranges which can support all classes of vehicles with everything from cross-domain UxS operations to live-fire events or, in this case, launch and recovery

testing. We were proud to deliver problemsolving capability to our fellow warfare centers and industry partners with vital technical services needed to support national defense strategies.”

Beyond CRADA partnerships, other entities were instrumental in this successful demonstration. Security teams from NSWC PCD and its host installation, Naval Support Activity Panama City, also coordinated to play a critical role in support of successful testing. U. S. Coast Guard Station Panama City also provided security services and on-site support during the effort both pier-side and at their boat launch.

“We are very proud to be working with the U.S. Navy on advancing the capability to deploy unmanned vehicles on amphibious ships,” said Randy Johnson, Sr. Director of Research, Development, and Process Technology within HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division. “Continuing to collaborate with the Navy early in this process and successfully conducting these two additional demonstration tests enables us to move forward expeditiously with further testing to mature the Pharos capabilities.”

Through the accomplishments of this CRADA, HII can continue to demonstrate Pharos capabilities to the fleet, apply lesson-learned to further mature and advance autonomy concepts, and continue to develop innovative national security solutions.

“Through this CRADA with NSWC Panama City Division, HII can continue to leverage unique capabilities from across the enterprise

to advance the future of distributed maritime operations,” said Brian McKeon, Sr. Director of Technology within HII’s Mission Technologies division.

This collaborative effort highlights the value, impact and numerous capabilities of the One Team enterprise. This Naval Sea Systems Command mindset aims to focus and combine its 10 warfare centers’ efforts to achieve mission success for the fleet and the warfighter.

“This test is truly the best form of collaboration between U.S. Navy labs and CRADA partner HII. We are collaborating as One Team to perform a service that will provide incredible returns to the U.S. Navy as a whole,” said NSWC PCD Technology Transfer Manager Paige George. “Without NSWC PCD support, there would be delays in shipment to NUWC, which could negatively impact the program. This is a BIG win all around!”

Hot Buttered Rum

INGREDIENTS

Hot Buttered Rum Batter:

• 1/2 c. (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

• 3/4 c. brown sugar

• 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon

• 1/8 to 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

• pinch ground cloves

• small pinch salt

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Hot Buttered Rum Batter:

Each Mug of Hot Buttered Rum:

• 2 heaping T. Hot Buttered Rum Batter

• 2 oz. dark or dark spiced rum

• 6 oz. boiling water

• whipped cream (optional)

• ground cinnamon or nutmeg for sprinkling (optional)

• cinnamon stick for garnish (optional)

1. Place butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves in a small bowl. Mash together with the back of a spoon or a fork until well combined.

2. Use immediately to prepare individual mugs of Hot Buttered Rum or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

For Each Mug of Hot Buttered Rum:

1. Place 2 heaping tablespoons of prepared Hot Buttered Rum batter in a mug.

2. Add rum and boiling water. Stir until the butter mixture is melted and fully dissolved.

3. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkling of ground cinnamon or nutmeg. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired.

Very Merry Ornamentini

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup vodka

• 1/2 cup orange liqueur

• 1/2 cup cherry juice

• 1/4 cup cranberry juice

• 1/4 cup orange juice freshly squeezed with pulp removed

• Sugared cranberries and fresh rosemary sprigs for garnish (you may also use fresh cranberries instead)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake vigorously.

2. Using a funnel, pour the mixture into four 3-inch clear glass ornaments that have been rinsed. Replace the topper on each ornament.

3. Add sugared cranberries and a rosemary sprig to four martini glasses. Set the ornament in the glass to serve.

4. Before drinking, slowly pour the contents of the ornament onto the cranberries.

Christmas Cranberry Bourbon Cocktail

INGREDIENTS

• 1/2 cup honey

• 2 cups fresh cranberries

• 2 sprigs fresh rosemary or thyme, plus more for garnish

• 1-inch fresh ginger, sliced

• 8 ounces bourbon

• 4 ounces elderflower liquor

• 1/3 cup fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice

• 1/4 cup fresh lime juice

• 4-6 ginger beers

• Star anise and cinnamon sticks for serving (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

1. In a medium pot, bring 1/2 cup water, honey, cranberries, rosemary (or thyme), and ginger to a boil over high heat. Boil for 5 minutes or until the cranberries begin to burst, then remove from the heat. Allow cooling. Remove the thyme and ginger. Strain out the cranberries if you like.

2. In a large pitcher, combine the cranberry syrup mix, bourbon, elderflower liquor, grapefruit juice, and lime juice. Chill the mixture until you’re ready to serve. Garnish with apple slice.

3. Add the ginger beer to the pitcher just before serving. Garnish each drink with a rosemary spring, a cinnamon stick, and star anise, if desired. Enjoy!

Gingerbread White Russian

INGREDIENTS

Gingerbread Syrup:

• 1/4 cup honey

• 3 tablespoons molasses

• 1-inch fresh ginger, sliced

• 2 cinnamon sticks

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Gingerbread Russian:

• 2 ounces (1/4 cup) vodka

• 1 1/2 ounces (3 tablespoons) Kahlua

• 1-2 ounces (2-4 tablespoons) gingerbread syrup

• 1-2 ounces (2-4 tablespoons) heavy cream

• cinnamon sticks and gingerbread cookies, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

Gingerbread Syrup:

1. In a medium pot, combine 1 1/3 cups water, the honey, molasses, ginger and cinnamon. Bring to a boil over high heat. Boil 3-5 minutes, then remove from the heat. Stir in the vanilla. Let cool. Keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Gingerbread Russian:

1. Fill a glass with ice. Add the vodka, Kahlua, and gingerbread syrup. Stir gently. Add the heavy cream and stir to combine. Garnish with cinnamon and gingerbread cookies, if desired.

Vanilla Orange Candied Cranberries

INGREDIENTS

• 3 3/4 cups sugar, divided

• 1 3/4 cups water

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 2 teaspoons orange extract or Grand Marnier

• 12 ounces fresh cranberries (1 bag), about 3 cups

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Combine 2 1/2 cups of sugar, water, vanilla, and orange extract in a saucepan. Heat over medium until the sugar has completely dissolved but not boiling.

2. Pour in the cranberries and stir. The hot syrup will loosen the skin, saturate the berries, and adhere to the berries over time. Cover the cranberries with a small plate to keep them mostly submerged. Then cover the pan and place it in the refrigerator overnight.

3. Place the remaining 1 1/4 cups of sugar in a rimmed dish. Strain the cranberries and place them in the sugar. Shake until they are completely coated. Carefully transfer them to a baking sheet to dry for about an hour.

4. Once the sugar coating is hard, place them in an air-tight container and keep in a cool spot for up to a week.

Note: Don't forget to refrigerate your Cranberry Infused Vanilla-Orange Syrup for cocktail time!

Shortbread Pecan Pie Bars

INGREDIENTS

For the Shortbread Crust:

• 8 tbsp (1 stick) butter, melted

• 1/4 cup sugar

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 1 cup all-purpose flour

INSTRUCTIONS

For the Pecan Pie Filling:

• 2 whole eggs

• 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed

• 1 cup light corn syrup

• 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

• 1 1/2 cup pecans, broken into quarters by hand

1. Preheat the oven to 325°F. Drape a piece of parchment paper over the bottom and sides of an 8x8-inch baking dish.

2. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, and vanilla. Add the flour and stir it in with a spatula. The mixture will get quite thick, be sure to mix until all the flour has been incorporated and there are no dry pockets.

3. Press the dough into the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Use your fingers to smooth it into an even layer, right up to each corner and all the sides.

4. Bake the crust for 10 - 15 minutes or until it is just barely toasted in color.

5. In a large mixing bowl, combine the eggs, brown sugar, corn syrup, and flour.

6. Break the pecans up by hand into quarters. This may take a couple more minutes than chopping with a knife but will the pecans will have a nicer shape and texture.

7. Remove the shortbread crust from the oven and pour the pecan filling over the top. Smooth out the pecans so they cover the top evenly.

8. Raise the oven temperature to 350°F and bake the pecan bars for 2530 minutes. The top should be golden and crispy and the filling should be set.

9. Let the bars cool completely before you attempt to cut them, the filling needs a chance to firm up at room temperature.

Maple Baked Pears with Whipped Cream

INGREDIENTS

• 6–8 Seckel pears, cut into half from top to bottom

Maple Bourbon Glaze:

• 1/3 cup maple syrup, divided

• 1 tbsp butter or refined coconut oil

• 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon

• 1 pinch ground nutmeg

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 400 F.

• optional: 2 tbsp amaretto or bourbon

• 1 tsp vanilla extract

• 8 oz. chilled heavy cream

• 1 dash ground ginger and/or cinnamon

• 1 pinch sea salt

2. Combine maple syrup, butter/oil, spices, bourbon (if using), and vanilla extract in a small pot. Cook over medium heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3. Place sliced pears on a baking sheet or in a roasting pan, cut side facing up.

4. Brush the maple bourbon glaze onto the pears with marinade brush. Place pan in oven and bake at 400F for 20-25 minutes, or until pears are tender, soft, and golden.

5. Remove from the oven and cool slightly before plating.

6. To make the whipped cream, place chilled heavy cream in a bowl. Mix in 3 tbsp maple syrup and any additional spices. Using a hand or stand mixer, whip for 2-5 minutes until whipped cream is formed. (can be made a day ahead of time and chilled in the fridge, covered).

Vegan ChocolatePeppermint Truffles

INGREDIENTS

For the truffles:

• 120ml Planted coconut drink with cocoa

• 200g dark chocolate, broken into small pieces

• 1/2 tsp peppermint extract

• Pinch of salt

INSTRUCTIONS

For the coating:

• 100g melted dark chocolate

1. Add the Planted drink into a small saucepan and heat over a medium heat until it reaches a quick boil.

2. Take off the heat and add the chocolate. Stir until completely melted and smooth.

3. Mix in the peppermint mint extract and a pinch of salt.

4. Set in the fridge for 1-2 hours.

5. Shape into truffles, then refrigerate again for 30 minutes.

6. Dip in melted chocolate and top with some crushed candy cane.

7. Refrigerate for a few minutes to allow the chocolate to set. Enjoy!

Gouda Bacon Macaroni & Cheese

INGREDIENTS

• 16 ounce elbow macaroni, cooked and drained

• 4 Tablespoons butter

• 2 ¼ cup milk

• ½ cup all-purpose flour

• 1 ¼ cup heavy whipping cream

• 2 teaspoons kosher salt

• 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

• ½ teaspoon dry mustard

INSTRUCTIONS

• 2 teaspoons Worcestershire

• 1 pound smoked gouda cheese, shredded

• ½ pound sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

• 5 slices bread (about 2 cups crumbs)

• 3 Tablespoons butter, melted

• ½ pound bacon, cooked and crumbled

1. Prepare macaroni according to package directions and set aside.

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

3. In large pot, melt butter over medium-high heat. Add skim milk and bring to near boiling. Reduce heat to medium and sprinkle in flour. Whisk vigorously over medium heat for 1-2 minutes. Mixture should be thick and boiling. Slowly add cream while whisking. Add in salt, pepper, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. Reduce heat to low and continue to stir for about 5 minutes.

4. In food processor, shred Gouda and Cheddar cheese. Add to pot and stir until thoroughly combined.

5. Add cooked macaroni to cheese mixture. Pour into a 13x9 dish.

6. In same food processor bowl, process 5 slices of bread to a fine crumb. Add melted butter. Sprinkle over macaroni. Top with crumbled bacon.

7. Bake uncovered for 25-30 minutes.

Vegan Stuffed Acorn Squash

INGREDIENTS

• 2 acorn squash, halved

• 1 (8-ounce) package tempeh

• 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, more for drizzling

• ½ yellow onion, chopped

• 8 ounces cremini mushrooms, diced

• 3 garlic cloves, minced

• ⅓ cup coarsely chopped walnuts

• 1 tablespoon tamari

INSTRUCTIONS

• 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

• ½ tablespoon chopped rosemary

• ¼ cup chopped sage

• ⅓ cup dried cranberries

• Parsley and a few pomegranate arils for garnish

• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1. Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Scoop out and discard the seeds from the squash. Place the squash halves on the baking sheet, and drizzle them with olive oil and pinches of salt and pepper. Roast cut-side up for 40 minutes or until tender.

2. While the squash roasts, cut the tempeh into ½-inch cubes, place in a steamer basket, and set over a pot filled with 1 inch of water. Bring the water to a simmer, cover the pot, and steam for 10 minutes. Remove, drain any excess water, and use your hands to crumble the tempeh.

3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion, ½ teaspoon salt, and several grinds of black pepper and cook for 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms and cook, stirring, until soft, about 8 minutes. Stir in the crumbled tempeh, garlic, walnuts, tamari, apple cider vinegar, rosemary, and sage and cook 2 to 3 minutes more, adding ¼ cup water as the pan gets dry. Stir in the cranberries and season to taste. Scoop the filling into the roasted acorn squash halves and garnish with parsley and pomegranates.

Cinnamon Honey Glazed Carrots

INGREDIENTS

• 1.5 lbs (650g) carrots, peeled and sliced

• 2 clove garlic, minced

• 1/4 cup butter

• 1/4 cup honey

• 1/4 cup brown sugar

• 1 teaspoon cinnamon

• 1 teaspoon salt and fresh cracked black pepper

• Fresh thyme and parsley for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Boil the sliced carrots for 5 to 7 minutes. Drain and set aside.

2. In a skillet, melt butter on medium heat. Stir in the honey, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

3. Bring the glaze to a simmer and continue to cook, stirring constantly for a couple of minutes. The glaze should reduce and thicken a little bit.

4. Stir in the cooked carrot slices and garlic and toss to coat well with glaze.

5. Reduce heat to a gentle simmer and continue cooking for another 5 minutes, stirring regularly. Adjust seasoning with black pepper and salt if necessary. Garnish with fresh thyme and parsley and serve immediately. Enjoy!

• 6 slices bacon, sliced

• 1 sweet onion, chopped

• 3 garlic cloves, chopped

• 1 tsp. crushed red pepper

• 2 bunches turnip, mustard, or collard greens, thick stems discarded and leaves chopped

• 8 cups chicken stock

• Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Cook bacon in a large pot over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until just beginning to brown, 8 to 10 minutes; transfer with a slotted spoon to a paper towel-lined plate.

2. Add onion, garlic, and red pepper to pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are soft, about 8 to 10 minutes.

3. Add greens a handful at a time, stirring each addition just until wilted.

4. Add stock and cooked bacon; bring to a simmer.

5. Cook covered, stirring occasionally, until very tender, about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Season with salt and pepper.

BEAR CREEK FELINE CENTER

BCFC is proud to make permanent homes for nineteen exotic felines, including the three wild cats that live in the State of Florida: the Florida Panther, the Jaguarundi, and the Florida Bobcat. Additionally, BCFC makes homes to Siberian Lynx, Cougars, Mountain Lions, African Servals, and a recently rehomed Asian Leopard Cat. These cats come from sources including failed pet attempts, retired celebrities, confiscations, and most recently, an injured wild bobcat that cannot be returned into the wild.

Bear Creek Feline Center (BCFC) was founded in April 2000 by Jim and Bertie Broaddus. The couple may be remembered as Bay County broadcasters, having operated radio stations WPFM, Island 106, and 97X (then called Pirate Radio) for decades prior to “Going Wild,” quoting Jim. Broaddus is credited for MTV’s Spring Break programming aired Worldwide from PCB back in the 90s.

After Michael blew through the Panhandle four years ago, the Center was granted Big Cat Sanctuary status by the FWC, operating as one of eleven authorized feline sanctuaries in the State of Florida. The Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity. Private tours are scheduled by appointment. Call (850) 722-9927 to learn more.

Lone Star Boil House in Historic Downtown Panama City brings you the true taste of Texas and Louisiana combined. Mike Tyson is a name synonymous with boxing genius. Mike has a record of 50-6-1. To watch him is so energizing. Mike would just keep going and keep punching until he got what he was after. We can learn a few things from his story that can help us stay in the match. First, Mike never expected to avoid getting hit. Second, he stayed completely focused on the moment and on his target. And finally, Mike Tyson didn't give up. This kind of tenacity stirs the energy in the room.

At the Beach Chamber, we also have some stars who have stayed in the ring that we can learn from. There are several events each year where you too can be among some heavy hitters. These events are called IdeaCamp. IdeaCamp is one of our most appreciated events in the Beach Chamber and we would love to see you there!

WHAT IS IDEACAMP?

IdeaCamp is a forum to inspire, energize, and ignite the community through sharing, connecting, and cultivating of open-minded discussions supporting the free flow of ideas. As we approach the holidays, I am reminded of the great quality of life we have here on the beach.

Among our greatest assets are our parks, specifically Frank Brown and Aaron Bessant. Thousands visit these two venues each year for competitive sports, the walking trails, swimming, special events, and just to enjoy the great outdoors. Parks contribute not only to our quality of life but also provide an outlet for exercise, which contributes to a healthy lifestyle.

In March of this year, the City Council contracted with an architectural firm for a master plan for both parks. A master plan is important in guiding future growth to meet the diverse needs of our growing community. Planning allows all the elements of our parks to work in harmony with nature.

The Council’s list of upgrades includes adding more pickleball and basketball courts and constructing a skate park and BMX park at Frank Brown. We need handicap-accessible restrooms near Miracle Field, and we are moving forward with plans to build a safe room to be used for field and festival evacuations when bad weather comes in. We want to add amenities at the fishing pond, including a dock or walkover with a gazebo.

The Tourist Development Council has committed to sharing the cost of upgrades to Aaron Bessant Park, including new fencing and

building a pavilion. We’ve also sought more trail connectivity and improved trails.

The biggest improvement we hope to accomplish long-term is a pedestrian link between these two parks. The Florida Department of Transportation will be converting Panama City Beach Parkway in front of Frank Brown to a 6-lane road. A new traffic signal will go in at the main entrance to Frank Brown at Mandy Lane. This heavily traveled intersection needs an overpass so pedestrians can safely and conveniently go between these two parks. We will work to seek legislative support and funding to make this a reality.

As Panama City Beach Parkway is expanded, we also want to look at revamping the signage into Frank Brown, with naming rights through a public/private partnership to make this an eye-catching park entrance.

We are excited about these upgrades. Frank Brown and Aaron Bessant play significant roles in our lives. The fields at Frank Brown are where our kids learned to play sports, and Aaron Bessant is home to events that, for many of us, have become family traditions like Beach Home for the Holidays.

As warm weather gives way to cooler temperatures, Bay County has several events coming up this fall to help everyone enjoy this holiday season.

On Friday, November 11, the Bay County Commission, Bay County Veterans Services, and the Bay County Veterans Council will pay tribute to the men and women who have served our great country with the annual Veterans Day Parade and Wreath Laying Ceremony.

The parade starts at 9 a.m. at the corner of Frankford Avenue and 11th Street in Panama City. It proceeds eastward on 11th Street to the Bay County Government Center. The parade will be followed by

a ceremony at 10:15, featuring the North Bay Haven Marching Band and Choir.

The annual Bay County Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony begins at 5 p.m. on Thursday, December 1, at the Bay County Government Center, located at 840 W. 11th Street, Panama City. The event will feature free hot chocolate and cookies, Christmas carolers, and an opportunity to meet Santa Claus. The public is invited to attend and encouraged to bring cameras for pictures with Santa.

Also, keep an eye out for the 2022 Bay County Annual Report, the 2023 Budget Summary, and the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan, arriving by mail or available online at baycountyfl.gov as soon as they are published toward the end of the year. hen I was selected as the director of the St. Andrews and St. Joseph Bays Estuary Program at Florida State University Panama City, I was truly honored to have the opportunity to apply my experience to preserve and protect the area's most important resource. I was also excited to collaborate with leaders and stakeholders who share a passion for this community and its waterways.

The Estuary Program was specifically designed to be a communitydriven, science-based effort. It takes the approach that we are all responsible for protecting, restoring, and eliminating threats to our bays and the watershed, arriving at solutions together.

The St. Andrew Bay Watershed covers six counties, with Bay and Gulf Counties encompassing most of our interconnected estuarine system. From the springs in the north to the coastal dune lakes in the south, our watershed is quite the gem.

WThe program provides a permanent forum for participants to come together in a neutral environment to review information, agree on priority issues, and work together to find solutions and funding to implement important projects.

These forums are crucial to developing a Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan, which will serve as a blueprint for action over the next 10 years and be a catalyst for large collaborative efforts across the watershed.

Protecting our beautiful waters and our way of life begins with us. We need your help, and there are many ways to get involved. You can participate in our Community Survey (https://tinyurl.com/ SASJBEPsurvey), follow us @SASJBEP, join an Advisory Committee (STEM, Community Action, and Development & Finance), participate in our Public Input Workshops and outreach events, or give to the SASJBEP Foundation Fund. Donations will allow us to monitor the condition of our bays, conserve and restore important habitats, and encourage coastal stewardship now and for generations to come.

The holiday season brings a time of reflection for the year that is quickly coming to an end – a time of reflection, reminiscing, and forward-thinking. This year has been notable for Gulf Coast State College. We celebrated the largest donation in our history, demolished a portion of our science labs to make room for the building of a new STEM Center, and celebrated the College’s 65th Anniversary in September.

While the College has grown and transformed itself tremendously over the last 65 years, its core commitment to providing lifechanging learning opportunities for the citizens of Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties is unchanged. Gulf Coast State College’s history is a rich one, and we are extremely proud to be a part of this community and to have touched so many lives. With this, we held a wonderful community celebration on our anniversary, where we were able to showcase our programs and divisions, as well as have a day of connection and fun with the greater community. Thank you to everyone who joined for the momentous occasion!

In May, the College and the Foundation received the largest gift in its history. The generous donation of $2.5 million was received

from Ms. Julie Hilton, the daughter of the late Charles Hilton, Sr. Of this donation, $2 million is allocated for our Hospitality and Tourism Management program, a program housed in the newly-renamed Charles Hilton Center for Advanced Technology and Hospitality Management. The additional $500 thousand is supporting the Gulf Coast Guarantee, our scholarship program for high school graduates from Bay, Gulf, and Franklin counties. The Hilton family firmly supports educational opportunities for our students and the development of a strong hospitality and tourism workforce, and we are grateful for the investment that has been made at GCSC in these areas on behalf of the Hilton family!

This year also marked a major milestone for the College as we launched the 2022-2027 Strategic Plan – the blueprint that will guide our path for the next five years. It represents the College’s assessment of how to best attract and graduate students with the skills that our community’s workforce will need. The 2022-2027 plan identifies and focuses on five major areas: (1) Learning First, (2) Student Success, (3) Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, (4) Community Connections, and (5) Organizational Culture. We determined these are critical to providing knowledgeable and well-prepared graduates ready to integrate into and contribute to the community we serve. The 2022-2027 Strategic Plan, titled “Reset, Refresh, Renew,” will not only continue to embody the College’s mission, goals, and vision but, to an even greater degree, exemplify our spirit of resilience and strength as an educational institution.

APPY HOLIDAYS! Of course, production companies are thrilled to be filming during this time of year to have fresh content for the upcoming season. BUT! It is EXTREMELY important to know if filming is going to be in your place of business OR your home, that it must look “evergreen.” This means that if it is shown on tv in July, it cannot have holiday lights and the “proverbial “Elf on the Shelf.”

The production assistants who work with the companies will generally take the decorations down and put them back up, so please do not be offended if they let you know this is the case.

We’ve had gorgeous locations that just had to be bypassed if the décor can’t be removed. If we can shoot around it, we will certainly give it a go. It is often frustrating if a production comes in, such as “The Great Christmas Light Fight,” and we film two weeks of the entire “build,” only for the location to realize it will not be televised until the following year. So be aware that if someone is filming for the décor, there is a great chance it won’t be aired until the following season.

One of our great repeat clients returned not once but TWICE this season to film their new line of watercraft. Thanks to Yamaha for keeping Panama City Beach and Northwest Florida in mind for their products. The water was beautiful for their shoot on Shell Island and the next one near Cape San Blast. Bay County residents will get to be models, captains, and family depicted in these upcoming ads.

Roadkill, the feature film, is just officially in post-production and continues to be edited by the award-winning SkyPro Studios. This company has been a mainstay for the area and has continued to grow and add to their arsenal of production gear.

The holidays are cheerful, but they can also be a busy time of year for many, with crowded schedules, shopping, and stress. That doesn’t mean you have to lose the giving spirit! True gifts of Christmas are Peace, Joy, and Love!

The best gifts often aren’t material ones. Small acts of kindness that show you’re thinking of someone can mean more and cost less than a physical item. Here are a couple of tips to spread Beach Chamber love:

Don’t do more – do less. It’s almost ironic to have the first Christmas reminder be a suggestion to do less. I know, that idea goes against every well-intended plan for a festive and memorable season, but doing less leaves more time for the real meaning of Christmas.

Thank volunteers. If you’re unable to make a volunteer commitment this season, make sure to thank those who can.

Mind your manners. When you’re out and about this holiday season, small acts of kindness can make a world of difference. Say thank you, let someone go in front of you in the crowded line or merely smile at someone.

Buy or bake a little extra. Another way to spread Beach Chamber love without breaking the bank or your schedule is by doing a little extra of something you were already planning. Baking Christmas cookies? Make an extra batch for the local nursing home. Cooking up a big meal? Drop some off at the homeless shelter.

Tis Better to Donate Than Accumulate. Make the holidays more meaningful by finding a charity to donate to, taking your gently used items to a local thrift store, or finding a worthy cause to support. “Those who are happiest are those who do the most for others.” Send Santa a list of what you have, not what you want. Our lives are so full of abundance that often gets taken for granted. Switching our mindset to be about what we have rather than what we want is a great way to bring the true spirit of Christmas into our homes.

Be a friend. The holidays may not be full of joy for everyone. It can be a lonely time for some that don’t have nearby friends and/ or family. If you know someone who finds the holidays tough, make sure to include them. Invite them to your gatherings, or just spend some extra time with them one-on-one.

Simplify your gift-giving. There is no bigger downer than being overwhelmed at Christmas. The crowds, lines, and traffic are enough to send me to live with the Grinch. Try sticking with the 3 M’s – Minimize, Meaning, and Memories.

Visit a Senior. Did you know that more than 50% of senior citizens in nursing homes never get visitors? Bring a sense of family to someone who doesn’t have one.

We consider our members to be more than just a name or number. Each and every one of you is part of our family, so get out and let’s spread some Beach Chamber love this season!!!
