In 2014 and 2015, for beef with the higher prices. The cattle prices exceeded current levels packers have had the upper hand since the slowdowns in production due to the fire in the packing plant in Texas and then Covid in the packing plant lines, but through it all, the demand has been strong. The packer profits have been the highest in history for the past two years with historic profits never seen before. Finally, it looks like the backlog in the feedlots have been chewed through and Free Resources the finished beef prices are starting to rise for the feeders. This should lead to higher calf prices this fall and, in the future, as we have reduced cow numbers in North America and thus, the number of calves going forward will be less for the next few years. by a significant amount. And it is the upside potential in cattle prices, as supplies are forecast to decline in 2023 and 2024, that have long-term bulls excited. It just isn’t in Canada that the beef market is hot. In Australia, they have record prices right now with phenomenal demand. I had some prices sent to me from the Australian Charolais Association, from the Victorian Region Silver calf pen shows and sales. Here are a couple from early January. 21 Silver Charolais steers 443 kg (975 lb) $6.10/kg ($2.77/lb) $2,520 AUS ($2,300 CAD). 21 Silver Charolais heifers 378 kg (832 lb) $6.95/kg ($3.16/lb) $2,290 AUS ($2,100 CAD). Most of the Charolais sale catalogues are on our website and remember too, that all our Charolais Banner and Charolais Connection magazines are online for free at charolaisbanner.com. If you want to go back to past issues, or show your neighbours past articles, please do. We also try to keep the sale news very current on our homepage, so you can check the latest results, usually within a day of the sale. We wish everyone a great calving season, with nice weather, and may the moisture conditions this summer be favourable. Until next time, Helge

DES POINTS À RÉFLÉCHIR
Dans nos champs
Helge By

The purebred beef associations, along with their members, are tasked with the genetic improvement in the beef industry. The stakeholders on the purebred side spend millions of dollars on genetic research to help advance the beef industry. We can have all the very best tools but if they are not utilized, they do us no good. Retail giants such as Costco are demanding that as an industry we improve. Costco is working to improve prime grading from 1% to 5% within four years. Some of the tools they will be using are: -Pre-harvest identification of cattle via genotyping. -Implementation of new management and feeding protocol. -Ultrasound verification of grade. We, as beef supply chain producers, need to be very aware of what retailers want and do everything in our power to produce it. We have a lot of tools in our toolbox, let’s use them. The advancement of genomic information available, the accuracy of EPDs, plus ultrasound data are some of the most important tools we have. A lot of this information can be difficult to understand, but most purebred producers have an understanding and can and want to answer your questions and concerns. These tools are important for the seedstock producer, but equally, if not more valuable, for the commercial breeders. At the end of the day, we are working together for better beef. Through the CBBC (Canadian Beef Breeds Council), the breed Associations are working together and need to continue to do so. One of the projects that is being developed is the CBIN (Canadian Beef Innovation Network) project. Charolais Connection • March 2022
CBIN is a platform for genetic innovation and technology adoption, leveraging data science to advance outcome-based decision-making tools, to further enhance sustainable beef production in Canada. CBIN will facilitate research, development, and utilization of innovative genetic improvement technologies, for the benefit of all segments of the Canadian beef supply chain from primary production through to consumer. The goal of CBIN is to ensure directed and optimal genetic improvement of the Canadian beef herd. This will include providing genetic evaluation and performance prediction data points for outcomebased breeding decisions, lead innovative genetic research and technology transfer programs, and enhance data capture and management systems to assist with implementation of processes that will accurately and consistently yield animals specifically designed for targeted retail programs and/ or specific performance parameters valued by stakeholders within the beef value chain. The beef industry is somewhat under attack by various environmental, health and social groups. We, as producers, know that we are doing a great job of being stewards of the land and environment, but we might not be doing a good job of telling our story. One of the keynote speakers at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference was Professor Timothy Caulfield, an unrivalled communicator who debunks myths and assumptions about innovations in heath care. Part of Professor Caulfield’s message was that we live in a would of fear and misconceptions, today’s society is more likely to believe a celebrity’s endorsement rather than a ..continued on page 18

FROM THE CANADIAN CHAROLAIS ASSOCIATION, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 14 scientific explanation. A study was conducted in the U.S. on the 100 most trustworthy people in the U.S. and the top 3 were all Hollywood actors, so how do we compete with that.
We have Provincial and Federal organizations in the beef business that are doing a great job of telling our story and getting the true facts out to consumers about what we
do. We need to work with these organizations to give them the support they need to continue to take our great message forward.
FROM THE CANADIAN CHAROLAIS ASSOCIATION, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 des données.

PROFILE – AB CARROLL
Auctioneer Champion to Social Media Marketing Success Candace By Ab Carroll had an interest in auctioneering as a young teenager. His family had no auctioneers in its history, so it was a new path that was possibly considered as a fleeting interest and not taken too seriously. “I started as a smoke-break auctioneer in Woodville. They had a little auction barn and when Neil Woodrow needed a smoke, I would sell the baby calves, rabbits, and the chickens. I attended the Worldwide College of Auctioneering in 2011, in Denver. There is a school in Iowa, but I was not allowed to miss too much school and the way it worked out, I only missed the first week of grade eleven by going to Denver.” “The deal was that I had to go to college, so I attended college in Barrie, to become a nurse. While I was there, Neil was selling the stocker sale in
Cookstown. I happened to come down one night to watch the sale and Neil introduced me to Wayne Small and Murray Morden, and they just happened to be looking for somebody. It started with me selling the non-vaccinated calves on Thursday nights. I started full-time in November of 2015, when I finished college, and I’ve been here ever since.” (The Cookstown market is formally know as the Ontario Stockyards Inc.) Ab did work as a nurse on weekends at the jail for about a year, while working at the market during the week. He dropped the nursing part from his workload and devoted all his time to his market job. “I started competing in the 2014 LMAC (Livestock Marketers Association of Canada) Auctioneering
“In Whitewood, Saskatchewan, in 2018, I was lucky enough to win the performance.”

have cut back, but Grandpa probably still has 70 cows. We are down on numbers, but since I am full-time at the market, it is probably best. I will be increasing my numbers shortly.” “I built a new barn to combat the freezing rain and snow. We also built it to make chore time easier and faster. We built it for environmental reasons too, as we run a lot of cows in the cedar bush. I felt if we could get them on concrete, it would save the land. It would also be safe because we designed it for moving cattle through with ease. The barn is 120 x 60 and there is a 120 x 60 cement pad in front. I would like to have a manure pit, but I just haven’t got around to doing that yet.” They try to calve in January or February, if possible, as it is a slow period at the stockyards. “I find it is the lowest input for me. By the time they hit grass, they aren’t eating a ton. It is a little bit more work in the cold, but I find the cold doesn’t bother the calves, if I can keep them out of the wind. I find there are fewer health issues calving in January and there are definitely no flies to bother them.” “I vaccinate the calves with a live vaccine, blackleg and a dewormer in May. When we wean, we give them a live vaccine again.” “We wean and keep some replacements. We background some of the calves from the first-calf heifers. I generally wean in the first week of September, so it extends my pasture. I market the calves in the first week of October.
We watch the market, and if it makes sense to hold them a week or two more, we do.” “I try not to background too many, and what I do is done on grass. I buy white heifers, or Charcross heifers, at 550 pounds in March and April. It gives me a backup plan if the market isn’t right, I can always breed a heifer. When they go out on grass, I find they have lots of frame and growth in them. They gain like a bugger out there. When we bring them here, they weigh up, and the resale value is so great. Every week I get calls here asking how many Charolais yearlings we have to sell. It isn’t how many yearlings do you have, it is how many Charolais yearlings do you have.“ “We lead most of the sales off with a Charolais or Charcross string if we can. We just find that it sets the pace for the day. Every breed has their pros and cons, but I think the Charolais come with easy feeding and high yielding qualities. I feel the Charolais breed is the best breed in the cattle business right now, especially in Canada. They are the right size, they have the birth weight under control, the weaning weights are good. There is not a lot of input to put that weight on them. When they come here, they are easy to market. They go on feed, and they gain. We have guys here that won’t feed anything but a white or a tan.” “The whites will bring the premium of 12-15 cents on a weaned calf. A 700 lb Charolais steer yesterday (October, 2021) was bringing $2.08-$2.15, whereas a black of the

same weight was bringing $1.95-$2.01. There is nothing wrong with the blacks, the Charolais just seem to work out for what is going on here. Lots of guys are looking for Charolais bulls and are asking where they can find one. Some of the Limousin guys are still pretty powerful here. There is no debate that Charolais is king here in Ontario.” “Let’s face it. If you get a ten-cent premium on a 500-pound calf, that is $50. That pays for your commission, your expenses getting here, etc. You put that premium on a 700-pound calf, and it is a lot of money in your pocket. It may be a little harder in Ontario to sell silvers than in the west. No matter if you have red cows, white cows, sandycoloured cows, or multi-coloured cows – a Charolais bull will maximize your dollars on the calves. I really like to see guys maximize hybrid vigour in their herd. I like white on white, as I think Charolais is the best overall breed.” “I breed my heifers to a calving ease Charolais bull or a Limousin bull. After the first year, they all see a Charolais bull. I A.I. to a Charolais bull, then they get turned out with a clean-up bull. I use Semex semen to breed my females. My mature cows are around 1,500 lb. I try to keep them between 1,400 and 1,500 pounds. There are lots of moderate framed Charolais available now. Every now and then I kick out a bigger framed bull. The four- and fiveyear old females will see a bigger bull to make the most of their maturity. We run about a six-week calving interval, by A.I.ing in the second week of April and pull the bulls in the first week of June.”
34
“We weigh all our calves when they are born. I try to keep them under 95 pounds, but we get 95-100-pound calves quite regularly. I know calving was the big scare with Charolais in the past, but it really doesn’t cross my mind anymore, unless they are small heifers.” “I keep cows until they are ten. Running the stockyards here, I don’t have time to for any issues at home. Some cows may stay until eleven, but I prefer to sell at ten. My grandfather doesn’t. He has lots of cows around much older than ten. I try to do a 40-50% weight on weaning. If a cow weighs 1,500 pounds, she should be able to raise a 700 lb calf. If she weighs 1,300 pounds, she should raise at least a 600 lb calf. They may get away with an under-weight calf once, but they won’t see past a second time.” “We weigh our cows and calves every time they go through the chute. Before they go to grass, they are all weighed. We have scales in our handling system, and it isn’t too complicated. We use Herdtrax, we scan their eartag and enter the weight. We go by the cow’s weight when she goes on grass, as we don’t typically bring them in until later in November, depending on the grass situation. We do take into consideration the birth date of the calf. Obviously, if they are born on the first of February, there is going to be a difference with the January 1 calves.” “The cows really do have to fend for themselves. Obviously, we feed them, but they certainly don’t get babied. The commute to the stockyards is about an hour and twenty minutes, so they must be low maintenance

Twitter. He started to show me some Ag Twitter accounts, and I thought it was worth a try. I made an account and did some strategic tweets and mentions. I never even asked Wayne or Murray, I just started to follow some highly visible people, like Helge By, John Mielhausen, Brian Good, and the associations. When they liked a tweet, responded, or retweeted, I would gain more followers. It just sort of exploded.” “When we took over, I started the Facebook page. That was to post market reports and acknowledge producers that had done well in a cost-effective way. Print advertising is so expensive, I thought we would try putting it online and that really took off. People started coming from further away and we had an explosion of business from the Maritimes. We get at least a load, if not two loads a week from there now. A big chunk of our business comes from Quebec. We get cattle from the north, it just snowballed. The summer used to be dead here and now we are doing four and five hundred calves all summer. In a year, I think

we run about 90,000 cattle through the yards and about 50,000 sheep and goats. We have three sales each week. Every Monday, we have from 800 to 1,500 sheep, lambs, and goats. January to March can be pretty slow for sheep, lambs and goats, but it is steady through the rest of the year.” “The main thing for me in social media is consistency. If I always tweet about the stocker sale on Thursday, pretty soon people are looking for the results. I did one political tweet, and I will never do it again. I try to keep my Facebook posts to a template, so people know what to expect. I always try to keep things positive. Even in a down market, someone who tops it should still be recognized for doing a good job and demanding the top price. I do push Charolais, because hands down, they are the easiest breed to sell. We acknowledge any breeder that brings a good product and does well, it just seems to be Charolais more often.” “We don’t sell chickens or rabbits unless we volunteer for a fundraiser auction. We just sold some turkeys last week for some 4-H kids. The first turkey sold for $1,000.

The second turkey came in the ring and brought $1,000. The third turkey came in the ring, and it was a younger kid, who didn’t have his homework done. We were having trouble getting $100. I saw a friend of mine in the stands and thought it would be a good joke for him to buy a turkey, as I knew very well, he didn’t want one. I started bidding and at $500, I decided it was getting to be an expensive joke. We ended up splitting the cost of the turkey and he got the bird. We do a lot of 4-H sales.” “The Mennonite and Amish population make up about eighty percent of our buyer base. We have a bus that goes and picks them up at their homes on Thursday mornings to bring them to the sale. It keeps the buyer seats more consistently full. All they have to do is call the bus company and say they want to go Thursday, and they get picked up. The company plans a route and gives them an idea what time they will be there. The buyers wait at the end of their driveway, come to the sale and the bus takes them home. It is well worth the investment. We had thirty buyers at the sale
yesterday, that came by bus. When they have to phone to arrange the pick-up, you know they are there to buy. It’s funny, you go out west and there may be seven buyers at a sale. Here it is common to have fifty buyers in the ring.” “We have a sheep, lamb and goat sale on Mondays, a cow sale on Wednesdays and a stocker sale on Thursdays. Three or four times each, in the spring and in the fall, we will have a special vaccinated sale on Tuesdays, and we will run buses on those days.” “Brussels and Kitchener deal heavily in yearlings, and we deal in calves. We just don’t get the same group sizes here. The average producer here probably has thirty cows and some of them run their bull all year. We don’t have presort sales in Ontario, but there are some club sales. We try to keep our sales between 1,200 and 1,400 head, so it is a reasonable day for the buyers.” Accommodating both buyers and sellers has proven to be a successful recipe for Ab and Ashley, and the Cookstown Stockyards. Increasing the market’s visibility has pulled cattle from farther distances and expanded their numbers.
I do push Charolais, because hands down, they are the easiest breed to sell.

HERD HEALTH
New Ways to Treat Horn and Face Flies in Cattle Roy Lewis DVM
Producers know that Horn and Face Flies can irritate cattle and cause weight loss. Fortunately, they have a broad arsenal of products to combat them, with more fly treatments than ever before. This article will highlight the many options producers have to combat these production-limiting insects. Keep in mind timing is critical and we can save dollars by not overtreating a common mistake. Horn flies are the ones producers see over the cattle’s backs in the summer. They spend most of their time biting through the hide (20-40 times daily) and drawing blood. This biting and irritation makes cattle nervous, resulting in less milk production. Milk production can be reduced so much that weaning weights may be reduced up to 14% on calves. The calves are doubly affected—they have less milk
to drink, and the flies irritate and bite them as well. Face flies feed on animal secretions such as eye discharge and are very bothersome to cattle, and this may result in up to one hour less grazing per day, leading to less weight gain. Face flies also play a significant role in spreading diseases such as pinkeye, which also decreases production and may result in the permanent eye scars we see, if the infection gets bad enough. Both the Face fly and Horn fly life cycles involve eggs being laid in cattle manure. With the entire life cycle lasting two to three weeks, up to five lifecycles can occur in the summer. We should only treat when the numbers get high enough (see chart). We want numbers on average approaching 150200 before we initiate treatment or fire up our oilers. With these flies, herd sires are the ones to closely watch— producers know that they can scrape them off the backs of bulls by the handful when infestations get bad. For a lot
of producers, timing of infestations is highest in the peak of the summer when many bulls are breeding. For those that calve early, the breeding season gets ahead of the fly season, which is a great thing. Producers should think about fly control whenever they are processing cattle in the summer or are transporting cattle to summer pasture. Fly control products can help make it easier to manage the pesky insects and can help producers achieve the economic and emotional returns that come from weight gain and healthy cattle. There are several fly control options available and one should start off with one treatment, only when fly numbers get high enough. The ideal time may vary from time to time. Options available may even need to be changed from time to time. Ivermectin products treat infections and infestations due to gastrointestinal roundworms, eyeworms, lungworms, grubs, sucking lice and mites in cattle, and although producers and veterinarians may not think of them for fly treatment, they also provide control of Horn flies and Face flies. Consider though, that in fly control season, internal parasites may be worthy of treatment but lice really don’t show up until fall, so most producers may save this for a fall treatment of their A single small patch of flies = 25-50 A, B, C each being single patch = 75 flies
A patch covering 2 areas = 100-125 flies A & B, or B & C patch
A large patch covering all areas = 200-350 flies Covering A, B, & C

INDUSTRY NEWS
Canadian Cattlemen’s Association News Bob Lowe, President
Focusing on the negative can come easy, especially after almost two years of challenges. But I’m an optimist at heart and try to focus on the bright side of things – the opportunities that will set up our industry for future success. There’s no doubt that trade is one of our biggest successes. 2021 was another banner year for Canadian beef exports. It marked the sixth year in a row of Canada hitting record export values. This highlights that our long-term investment in market access advocacy continues to pay significant dividends. We are proud to see this trend continue, and more high-quality Canadian beef being enjoyed at dinner tables around the world. Our priority is to grow our market share in existing markets, while working to gain access to new markets. Diversification is a key consideration of our market access strategy. Another important consideration that can help us grow our exports is Canada attaining Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) negligible risk status from the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) in May 2021. With this new status, the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA) is working alongside the Government of Canada to remove the remaining BSEera market access restrictions, such as updating Canada’s export certificate with South Korea, moving to the shortlist for specified risk materials (SRM), and the CAN brand on feeder cattle going south. In December 2021, we did see the temporary halting of Canadian beef exports to China, the Philippines and South Korea following the Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s (CFIA) notification to the OIE about a confirmed case of atypical Bovine Spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada. The detection of an atypical case does not impact Canada’s BSE 48
negligible risk status, nor should it further interrupt trade flows. In January, both South Korea and the Philippines lifted their temporary suspension on Canadian beef imports. We are continuing to work with the Government of Canada to regain market access to China. As we look to the upcoming year, we are keen on attaining access to new markets through the negotiation of the Canada-U.K. Free Trade Agreement, the expansion of the Comprehensive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Agreement (CPTPP), as well as trade negotiations with the Association of Southern Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Indonesia. The Asian region is expected to hold the largest potential for growth in demand over the next 25 years and securing further access to these markets through CPTPP remains an important priority. We are actively advocating for further expansion of the CPTPP subject to review of specific country barriers and potential for beef trade. CCA was also pleased to see trade negotiations launch last year with the ASEAN countries and Indonesia. Canadian beef producers are eager to explore future growth opportunities in new markets and look forward to the ability to increase trade into ASEAN countries that are not part of the CPTPP, namely Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand. Another key priority on the trade front is continuing our work with Government of Canada to address market access challenges in current free trade agreements that are significantly limiting our trade potential. When the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) came into provisional effect in 2017 there was great promise for growth in Canadian beef exports. Since that time, we have seen imports from the European Union (EU) significantly outpace Canadian Charolais Connection • March 2022
exports into their market. CCA is working to enhance two-way beef trade with the EU and is monitoring global environmental commitments and their relationship to beef trade and working to ensure Canadian beef is recognized for its high contributions to environmental stewardship within Canada. We are also anxious to see negotiations move forward on the Canada-United Kingdom (U.K.) Trade Agreement. In 2021, Canada and the U.K. signed and ratified the CanadaU.K. Trade Continuity Agreement (Canada-U.K. TCA), which is largely a replica of CETA with some gains being made in how Canada’s quota into the U.K. is administered. As this agreement is meant to be an interim measure, Canada and the U.K. will engage in future negotiations, in the context of both a new, bilateral FTA as well as the U.K. potentially joining the CPTPP. In consultation in the lead up to a future FTA, we have indicated that under no circumstances can we support an outcome where beef from the U.K. continues to have unlimited access to the Canadian market while Canadian beef is subject to a tariff rate quota (TRQ). Although travel was limited in 2021 due to COVID-19, CCA did undertake a trade mission to Europe and the U.K., in conjunction with the United Nations Climate Change (COP26) meetings in Glasgow, to continue these important discussions. We look forward to growing our trade relationship with our counterparts in these important markets. Lastly, CCA is continuing to monitor the progression of the review being conducted in the United States (U.S.) regarding the voluntary “Product of USA” label. The goal of this review is to ensure this label is understandable to most U.S. consumers. CCA is following the review’s progression to ensure that well-meaning regulations don’t lead to ..continued on page 50

HERD HEALTH, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 46 cattle and look to other products for fly control. Cost of treatment, convenience and former experience make it used in some situations. Product is secreted in the manure and wreaks havoc with the bung beetle’s immature stage in the manure and they are a great insect to keep around. Other effective fly treatments include fly tags and oilers and mineral treatment. Tags have a long duration of about three months, but with this longer duration comes a higher cost and labor to put them in at the right time. Not many makes are available anymore. Tags must be applied right before fly season to be effective throughout the summer. Meanwhile, there have been fewer and fewer oiler
options with the removal of Malathion from the market. There are still a couple available, but use a fly product approved for cattle oilers and treat according to the fly population. A brand of mineral containing “Altosid” which, when fed throughout the fly season, controls the larvae but does nothing against the adult flies. It is a prevention and is fed through the entire fly season. There are also pour-on pyrethroid insecticides, which control both biting and sucking lice, and provide good activity on files. Some pyrethroids are also effective on certain ticks; these have names like Boss, Cylence, and Saber to name a few. In order to control infestations and
get the 10- to 30-pound weight gain that is desired for yearlings, applying fly control products at the optimum time is crucial. With the increase in cattle genetics and their great propensity to gain, today’s modern cattle could have even greater losses when grazing is disrupted. Breaking the fly life cycle and killing adults and larvae early can help reduce fly levels for the entire season. The closer to fly season you can treat your herd, the greater the benefit. Plan with your veterinarian the ideal time, most economical and yet efficient way to control flies in your herd. The benefits most years will be significant.

MANAGEMENT
Winter Care of the Bull Battery Heather Smith Thomas
Bulls need as much care through winter as the cow herd. Winter management is important, to make sure bulls are healthy and in top shape for the next breeding season. They need a chance to regain body condition if they lost weight. Bull management varies with each operation, partly depending on facilities available for keeping bulls separate from the cows. Brett DeBruycker (DeBruycker Charolais, Dutton, Montana) says that if a person is able to bring first-year bulls back in after breeding season and group them separate from the older bulls, it’s easier to give the young ones better feed and some tender, loving care for a while. “Then you can have them in decent shape for going into winter. On our operation, we can’t always do that because of space constraints, but we try to separate them if we can. Many commercial producers have the same problem; if they only have one place to put bulls, they are stuck with that. Still, it is important to get young bulls into better condition after their first breeding season, for more longevity in their service life.” Brian Driscoll (Driscoll Cattle Company, a Charolais seedstock and
54
commercial operation in central South Dakota) says body condition is one of the biggest concerns. “If bulls get thin in winter, which can happen if a person lets them run with the cows, this is when you might have more trouble with bulls getting scrotal frostbite. We may have stretches of weather below zero for ten days at a time, and this is hard on cattle. You have to keep them adequately fed in cold weather (to generate enough body heat to keep warm), and keep them healthy,” he says. Shelter Bulls need protection from wind. “Trees are the best windbreak but in some pastures or pens you may have to put up temporary windbreaks. Bedding is also helpful, so they don’t have to lie on frozen ground or in a snow drift. They need to be comfortable and out of the wind. Bulls can handle a lot of cold weather if they can get out of the wind and their bellies are full,” Driscoll says. “Our young developing bulls are always well bedded with straw, and have adequate feed, because they are still growing.” The older bulls are the ones that may be at most risk for scrotal frostbite, however, because they tend to have larger, more pendulous scrotums—less able to pull the testicles up against the body for warmth. “We don’t see as many bulls
Charolais Connection • March 2022
with frostbite as we did in the past, however. This is probably due to selection. Everyone has worked hard in the past 30 to 40 years on bull selection, to have bulls that can handle winter better. Different regions require different types of cattle, but in cold climates people have selected for bulls with tighter scrotums, and they are less likely to suffer frostbite,” says Driscoll. Breeders have also selected for feed efficiency, so cattle can hold body condition better in cold weather. Feed It always pays to separate the bulls from the cows, for winter. Then they are not competing for feed. “You can supplement the bulls with a little grain if they need it. The younger bulls (yearlings that have been out with cows for their first breeding season) should be kept separate from the older bulls. They need a lot more attention than the older ones,” says Driscoll. A yearling bull that’s been out with cows trying to do his job usually doesn’t weigh as much when you bring him home, as he did when you turned him out. It’s rough on some of them when they have a lot of ground to cover—especially if they had to go abruptly from being coddled and pampered with good feed and suddenly have to make a living in the real world on their own when turned out with cows.

When they come back in they may need extra feed, which is easier to do if they are separate from the older bulls. “Even the two-year olds will probably do better through winter if they are separate from the older bulls, with extra care. You don’t want to overdo the feed, however. Some people overdo it on the corn if bulls come in thin, trying to put weight back on them too quickly. This can ruin their feet and maybe lead to acidosis and other problems,” says Driscoll. You want bulls in good condition but not overly fat. “Consistent nutrition is what they need, and you can’t put 300 pounds back on them in two or three weeks. They need a constant level of nutrition that keeps them healthy and in good shape. You don’t want bulls fat, or they won’t be athletic enough to get around.” Too much fat in the scrotum will also interfere with fertility. “You want to keep them at body condition score 6 or 7—with some reserves—but not fat. They will need to be athletic in the spring, so they can cover a lot of ground,” says Driscoll. They won’t hold up if they are too thin or too fat. DeBruyckers run their herd bull battery and their cows like a commercial operation would. “They have to rough it sometimes; they are not pampered or babied, but we do take care of them in a positive manner,” he says. “If we have bulls in a small area, due to pasture concerns or numbers, I try to get the young bulls sorted off into their own group. If necessary, we might put some lick tubs out for the young bulls. If they are in tough shape, a person could also feed some cake for a month or two and pick them up a bit,” he says. “We’ve done all those things, and we don’t always get it done right, but we try! There’s nothing worse than having a $10,000 to $20,000 bull standing out there, after his first year of service, looking like the bulls that were only bringing about $2500! It pays to take care of those bulls,” says DeBruycker. 56
Health Program It’s important to pay attention to overall health. “Providing adequate salt and mineral helps a lot. We try to do that year round, but in winter it definitely helps keep their immune system functioning properly and they do better,” Driscoll says. Health care includes keeping bulls properly vaccinated and dewormed. “We make sure the bulls are dewormed at appropriate times, with a pour-on,” DeBruycker. says. “Occasionally we may use an injectable product. Every spring we also give booster vaccinations, including a vaccination for foot rot,” he says. All cattle are vulnerable to foot rot, but bulls seem more prone to this problem because of their additional weight (more stress on their feet) and the amount of traveling and fighting they do. If footing is wet and boggy or abrasive and rocky, nicks and scrapes can open the way for this infection to get started. “Regarding all the other vaccinations, we make sure the bulls are vaccinated as well as possible when they are young. We vaccinate against just about everything. Then we find they stay healthy later in life, with strong immunities,” says DeBruycker.
A good vaccination program is crucial. “Some people do a good job vaccinating the cow herd but tend to neglect or forget about the bulls,” says Driscoll. “A bull is something you only need for about 90 days out of the year and don’t need him the rest of the time. Some people just kick the bulls out in the back 40 for winter and forget about them and may end up with some problems. You have to take care of them, because even though they are big and tough and hardy, they are fragile in their own little way. They need some extra care— especially the yearling bulls,” he says. The way a person winters bulls may depend on the size of the operation, whether you have 2 bulls or 20, or 50. “Keeping them happy and healthy is a big deal, however. When you buy a bull, it’s a big investment, and you need to protect that investment. You are paying a lot for good genetics so you want to keep those bulls useful and functional for as long as you can,” Driscoll says. Social Order Pecking order problems can occur if you have a lot of bulls together. “If they start picking on one, the more bulls you have in a pen or pasture, the harder it is on that one that’s getting picked on. It may not be the

same one every day, but it seems like when one starts getting picked on, the others gang up on him, and this can be pretty hard on young bulls,” says Driscoll. Dr. Gerald Stokka (North Dakota State University) mentions one trick that some stockmen use when they put bulls back together after the breeding season. If they put vinegar on the bulls, they don’t fight as much. “I think there might be something to it. We tried it a couple times and thought it did make a little difference, but you have to dose them all at the same time,” he says. It’s best to keep younger bulls separate from older bulls, or some of them won’t be in good shape going into winter. “Older bulls hog the hay line and beat up on those younger ones,” says DeBruycker. “When it gets to be spring, or time to semen check and put bulls back out with the cows, those young bulls won’t be in the condition they need to be in order to pass a fertility test or to get out and breed a lot of cows,” he says. “It varies from year to year, but we try hard to have a large enough area (if we need to have all the bulls together) with good fall pasture, so the young bulls don’t have to be grouped up or compete with the older ones.” Having them out in a big pasture is probably healthiest for them, with room for exercise.
“In the harshest part of the winter we generally have them in a smaller area, but it is still big enough to give them room to stay away from one another and have adequate exercise,” DeBruycker says. “When feeding hay, I find it helpful to spread it out in a longer line, depending on the number of bulls. If you simply dump it in a few spots in a small area, the older bulls pick on the younger ones. They not only keep them away from the feed they need, but may also beat up on them and may break a leg or create other injuries. If the hay is spread out, it helps minimize risk for injuries. We’ve found that if you always make that hay line longer than you think is necessary, the bulls can spread out better,” he says. There’s always some place that the low-on-the-peckingorder bulls can find a place to eat. Facilities Good facilities and fences are crucial. Bulls can be very hard on fences when they start fighting. “They don’t care if its barbed-wire fence, panels or guard rails; they will bounce off it or push each other into it,” says Driscoll. “It takes good fence to keep them contained, especially in the spring when they think they need to go out with the cows; they can go through just about anything. Many ranchers in this area, after they sell their calves they put their bulls
in the calf lots, and that’s where the bulls stay until they turn them out the next spring. It takes a really good corral fence to keep them in. Electric fence sometimes helps, when the bulls respect it.” This takes a training program, however, since electric fence is mainly a psychological deterrent. “If you get bulls trained to respect electric fence, as when they grow up with it and learn about it at a young age, they do pretty well with it. But if bulls start fighting they may forget about the fence. Their minds are not on the fence, and they may go through it, whether it’s electric or not,” he says. Take Care of that Investment! Bulls are a big investment and you want to keep them functional as long as possible. If you were buying an expensive piece of machinery you would maintain it properly, so it will last, and not break down. The same is true with bulls. “You service your tractors, swathers and balers, and you need to treat your bull battery the same way. They are your new genetics; they will be making your calf crop for the next several years, and hopefully keeping your ranch profitable. You want to take good care of those bulls,” says DeBruycker. Whither the Wind: How to Decide on Windbreaks Reprinted from the Cattlemen with permission from the author Jenifer Heyden is a Livestock and Feed Extension Specialist with the Government of Saskatchewan
If beef producers want to have healthy, productive herds, making sure they’re protected from the wind is crucial, according to Jenifer Heyden. “We want the cattle to be able to maintain condition on cold, windy days,” says the livestock and feed extension specialist with the Government of Saskatchewan. While beef cattle are tough, and can handle fairly cold weather, it’s the wind and wet of snow that can make them vulnerable. “Without a windbreak, the cow’s energy requirements go up, so you end up having to feed them more so your costs go up,” Heyden says, adding that extreme wind and snow also have a detrimental effect on the cattle’s health. If they lose a lot of condition, they’re more susceptible to disease. Fortunately, if farmers make them available, cattle naturally gravitate to windbreaks for shelter. Heyden says that most cattle ranchers in her province have some sort of windbreak system. In the north, where there are more trees, natural windbreaks are more common and in the south, where the prairies are flat and treeless, there are more man-made windbreaks. Natural versus man-made While natural windbreaks – mainly trees and shrubs – are more cost competitive, especially if they already exist, Heyden’s a big fan of the man-made portable ones because the producer has more control over where the herd winters. “You can move them around to wherever you need them,” she says. “If you are on pasture, you can get the manure and urine from the cattle into a larger area, providing better soil nutrient coverage.”
60
Alternatively, producers can keep the windbreaks in one spot and feed their cattle in areas where there is a soil nutrient deficit. Parcels of land that might never be used for anything else could also be used with windbreaks. Natural windbreaks afford less control over porosity, she says. Optimal porosity – or air flow – for windbreaks is 25 to 33 per cent. This provides the maximum amount of protection from the wind without having too much turbulence on the downwind side. Luckily, she says making that happen is easy. Buying or making a structure with six-inch wide planks that are two inches apart will achieve 25 per cent porosity and putting them three inches apart gives 33 per cent. The planks can be placed either horizontally or vertically. Another downside to natural windbreaks is that they obviously can’t be moved around and are often found near water bodies, which presents the potential for manure runoff and water contamination. Construction Man-made windbreaks should be 10 feet (three metres) high and the length should allow for one foot of fence for each cow. Research has shown that a 10 foot high fence will provide protection for 80 to 100 feet (24 to 30 metres) behind it. The number of cows in a herd determines the number of windbreaks needed, and if they’re mobile, they can’t be too big or cumbersome to move. A onefoot space at the bottom of the windbreak helps ensure snow and ice don’t pile up and make it impossible to move.
Charolais Connection • March 2022
Lois Harris
Permanent man-made windbreaks would be better suited to cow-calf operators who keep their cattle in one or two pastures all winter, and the mobile types are better for rotational and cropland grazing. Heyden says that, for the permanent installations, producers should consider where the cows are calving, where they’re feeding and what sacrifices they’re willing to make in terms of such things as soil compaction and plant biodiversity. She also warns that snow builds up around these structures in winter, they limit cattle movement and nutrients are concentrated in the areas around them. Moving and Placement Mobile windbreaks have to be small enough to be easily towed or carried in a front-end loader. Most are made out of wood and can be either vertical or angled – with these, the space that’s nearest the ground can provide additional shelter for calves. They need to be placed perpendicular to the prevailing wind, which normally comes from a consistent direction, although during a snowstorm the direction can change. Heyden says that windbreaks need to be placed far enough away from water bodies to prevent runoff. “In the end, each producer must figure out what will work best for his or her operation,” she says. “Each has different goals and a different set of circumstances – the decision about what type of windbreak is best should be based on animal welfare and economics.” If well built, man-made windbreaks should last many years.”
