There are many “great causes” that we support. Virtually every non-profit has had donations and grants reduced because of the economic downturn. That includes Relay For Life, my “charity of choice.” The Relay takes place the last Saturday in April at the sports complex stadium. This year it will be on April 28.

The Relay takes place at the sports complex stadium. It starts about 6 p.m. and goes all night. There is at least one person walking the track all night long and many teams set up booths to sell cookies, coffee, hot dogs and trinkets to continue raising money. The families pitch tents in the outfield and the kids (eventually) go to sleep.

I ask that you support, and continue to support, Relay for Life. The Relay is a fund raiser for the American Cancer Society and is used to help find a cure. I would guess that cancer has somehow touched everyone. For myself and my wife, Rachelle, cancer has claimed the lives of three of our four parents and cancer also has touched one of her sisters, my brother and several in-laws.

Join us. You don’t have to be a sponsor or be part of a team. Just come out April 28 during the evening and you will be astounded. It is a great community event for everyone.

I became involved with Relay a few years ago when I was invited to hand out medals to cancer survivors at the start of the Relay. I was deeply touched by the survivors, which included two young children who were probably 10 or 11 years old, far too young to be battling such a serious illness. My wife and I came back to the Relay that night to find the baseball stadium at the sports complex transformed. Luminaries lined the track around the ball field and the bags had messages: “I remember my dad”…”We miss you, mom”…and other touching comments. Luminaries were in the bleachers and on one side of home plate the lights spelled out HOPE and the other side spelled out CURE. That’s when it became my charity of choice. So every April, I allow the audience to shave my head. We have some narrow hair clippers and, for $5, you can come up and take a swipe. I also have been the target in the dunk tank. It’s amazing how good people are at throwing soft balls! The initial organizing of the Relay started in January. Teams are formed and they do fund raisers such as night golf tournaments, dances, spaghetti dinners and other events. It’s not too late; you can form a team at any time.

If you do come out, say hello. I’ll be the bald guy giving out medals to the cancer survivors. For more information, contact my assistant, Rachel Aja, at 773-7368.

City Council District Roundup Acacia District – Councilmember Tony Rivero

Mesquite District - Councilmember Cathy Carlat

Recently, the redistricting process concluded resulting in new council districts. I have the privilege in welcoming new residents from the Pine, Palo Verde, and Willow districts. In the next couple of months I will be hosting several town halls in an effort to introduce myself to our new residents. I also welcome not only new residents to the town halls but anyone interested in learning about the city. In the near future I will be sending postcards with details. In addition, I want to remind you that our budget process is around the corner and I invite you to attend all our meetings and express your views and opinions. Lastly, once again lets support the “Keep it Local” campaign by shopping and dining in our city. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at (623) 773-7306 or email me at tonyrivero@peoriaaz.gov.

Since the first plunge in our economy, I have found myself painstakingly following the market trends and economic analysts about where we are and what to expect for the foreseeable future.

Ironwood District – Councilmember Dave Pearson Peoria hosts its first music festival, March 3, at the former Sports & Entertainment District, newly named “P83” -- Peoria at 83rd Avenue! The hottest entertainment area in the city celebrates its fresh new name and redevelopment plan (see P83AZ.com website) with rock music and a baseball game. The Seattle Mariners start the day off with the MLB spring training season opener followed by a huge music festival (4 p.m. - 9 p.m.) with headliner Seattle-based rock band, Candlebox. Congratulations to this year’s SNAP Grant award winners. Ironwood Council District schools, community and neighborhood groups are still eligible to apply. It is a simple, no hassle, online application for up to $2,000 toward projects that help our community. Go to FriendsOfPeoria.org for more. Next year’s critical city budget hearings begin March 26. You are invited to attend or watch via cable Channel 11 and online. For more about Peoria issues, be sure to check out my online blog -- DavePearson.US.

Palo Verde District – Councilmember Ron Aames For some Palo Verde District citizens, this is an official welcome message. For others it is a heart felt good-bye. Because of Peoria’s growing population, the district boundaries have moved north and east. If you live north of Cactus up to Tierra Buena, and between the New River trail and our city border at 67th Avenue, I am your city council representative. I also am serving those living between Cactus and Cholla from 79th to 67th Avenues; those between Cholla and Peoria Avenues along our 67th Avenue border, including Casa del Sol East, Fairwood, and Townsend Square; and those at the Enclave at Paradise Lane apartment complex, south of Bell. It’s my honor to be entrusted to represent all of you. Please contact me regarding neighborhood interests, community meetings, and other things that I can help with or you need to know more about. I am here for you. Feel free to contact Vice Mayor Ron Aames at (623) 773-7306 or ron.aames@peoriaaz.gov.

After we have all waited too many years for good news, I am finally starting to hear that things are improving. The economists are forecasting a slow and steady increase in jobs, growth and stability. I am also getting inquiries from businesses and homebuilders who are talking about putting on their gloves again. As Mesquite residents, I don’t have to remind you that we are in a very unique area of the City and the Valley. Surrounded by vast amounts of beautiful open space, the possibilities are immense. We have opportunities for large medical facilities, schools of higher learning, and lucrative employers. Strategically preserving open space is also a top priority. There are many items to pursue for Northern Peoria, but that is what planning is about – prioritizing, budgeting and securing possibilities. I am determined to position northern Peoria so external factors can and will align themselves in our favor. I am proud to say that I am working every day to make the most of every uptick in our economy for the benefit of the residents of our great City.

Pine District - Councilmember Carlo Leone Welcome new residents of the Pine District! The redistricting process is final and new district boundaries have been established. I will be hosting several meet & greet community meetings with new residents of the Pine District. I look forward to meeting each of you and learning more about your unique community needs. Details will be mailed to you, so be sure to check your mailboxes. The weather is starting to warm up, so you might consider having a neighborhood block party. A block party is an opportunity for you to meet your neighbors and make new friends, which promotes safety and helps to prevent crime when you are familiar with the faces in your neighborhood. It’s an opportunity to encourage a sense of community. For more information about block parties, please contact Neighborhood Services Section of the Police Department, Ann Bowers, Crime Prevention Specialist, at (623) 773-7093.

Willow District - Councilmember Joan Evans In January, 2012, the City of Peoria completed the council redistricting process. Due to the significant growth in the northern portion of the city, the Willow district has moved north taking up a large portion of the former Mesquite district. Visit www.peoriaaz.gov/council to view the new maps. A Willow District Community Meeting and Pancake Breakfast will be held on Sat., Feb. 25 from 8:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m at the Pinnacle Peak Public Safety Facility: 23100 Lake Pleasant Pkwy. There will be an opportunity for public information and questions. Please join me for a warm pancake breakfast, served by your very own Peoria Firefighters and to meet your neighborhood Police Force. I look forward to seeing you!
