Route 630 – Noosa to Nambour via Eumundi

There has been a small timing change to a ‘Wednesday-only’ trip on route 630 from the Eumundi Markets to Noosa Junction. The current 12:20pm trip from Eumundi Markets will depart 14 minutes earlier at 12:06pm.

Route 631 – Noosa to Nambour via Cooroy and Eumundi

Route 631 will see you travel to the muchloved Ginger Factory. This timetable is being updated to make the service more reliable, and to improve train connections at Nambour station. One Saturday morning trip

to Noosa, which currently starts at Eumundi will be extended to start from Nambour, providing better access to Eumundi Markets. This extension will operate as a trial for two years, before being reviewed to be added permanently. This stop has been jointly funded by Sunshine Coast Council and Translink.

The bus service improvements will extend all short trips, which currently commence or conclude at Sunshine Coast Airport, to cover the entire route from Maroochydore to Noosa Junction. This extension will result in additional early morning and evening trips being available for most stops along the route. These enhancements will improve travel options for more residents, ensure consistently timed services, and ultimately ensure the reliability of the bus services. TRASH TO TREASURE

THE TOOL SAVING MONEY AND THE PLANET

Sunshine Coast Council Economic Development Councillor Terry Landsberg urged local organisations to sign up to enjoy the benefits.

“One man’s trash is another man’s treasure so the more organisations that sign up, the more supply and diversity in resources become available to exchange,” Cr Landsberg said.

“From timber and metal to stationery and crafts, organics to soils – there’s a whole range of exchanges to be made to help turn your waste into a valuable resource while making a positive impact on our planet.

This matchmaking tool with a difference is turning trash into treasure.

And it is enjoying great success on the Sunshine Coast, helping the region surge towards its goal of being the most sustainable in the nation.

From timber and metal to stationery; and crafts and organics to soils, a range of material otherwise destined for landfill is being traded – and given new purpose - using the online marketplace-style ASPIRE platform. This connects likeminded local businesses and organisations who can negotiate exchanges that save money – and the planet!

Sunshine Coast Council was one of the first councils in Queensland to invest in ASPIRE.

Now the initiative has reached a major milestone here, attracting 300 members and diverting more than 3200 tonnes of wastebound material and products – that’s around 29,000 fridges.

Thanks to the platform, the region has this financial year saved $475,000 in disposal costs, and 1000 tonnes of carbon emissions have been saved through exchanges.

The members include family-run businesses, large manufacturers, community and sporting groups, schools and childcare centres.

It is accessible for all organisations with an ABN and is free if you have fewer than 100 full time staff.

“Sunshine Coast Council is proud to be one of the first councils in Queensland to invest in ASPIRE in October 2020 and it’s terrific to see nearly every council get behind it in South-East Queensland.

“The uptake in councils across South-East Queensland alone means the ASPIRE marketplace now connects opportunities to a wide and diverse catchment within the Sunshine Coast, Noosa, Moreton Bay and significant industries across Brisbane, Logan, Gold Coast and the Scenic Rim.”

ASPIRE also provides organisations with valuable data on carbon savings which can influence the buying decision of an increasingly growing number of environmentally aware and socially conscious consumers.

SINGING FOR OZHARVEST

COOL HARMONIES COMMUNITY CHOIR WILL OPEN ITS REHEARSAL DOORS ON 22 JUNE TO RAISE FUNDS FOR LOCAL VOLUNTEER ORGANISATION OZHARVEST.

Choir leader Yvonne Corstorphin said the public was invited to enjoy a morning of beautiful harmonies including sing-a-long songs with MA@MA as well as fabulous food and lucky door prizes.

“We are delighted to have Chapter Coordinator Michele Lipner come along to tell us about the valuable work OzHarvest does in our community,” Yvonne said.

OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie collects and redistributes surplus quality food to more than 45 local agencies that support individuals and families who are food insecure.

“Food donated to schools, charities, community programs, community centres and churches is then either turned into meals and hampers or provided as part of school breakfast and lunch programs,” Michele said.

“Since 2014, the volunteer-run chapter has rescued more than 800,000 kg of quality food from local supermarkets, bakeries, farmer markets, local producers and farmers - the

equivalent of 2.2 million meals.”

However, demand for the service far outweighs supply.

“Some agencies report that 30% of the people they support are seeking food relief for the first time. The increase in need for food relief has only continued to rise since 2020 and there is no end in sight.

Michele said OzHarvest relied on community support and fundraising to help keep its operations going and get food to the people who needed it most.

“For every dollar raised, OzHarvest is able to deliver the equivalent of two meals to people in need,” she said.

Cool Harmonies choir members will welcome the public to a morning of beautiful singing and fabulous food to help raise funds for OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie

MAKING TRACKS TOGETHER

RECOVERY PLAN FOR OUR BELOVED TURTLES

every nest and egg for the survival and recovery of these turtles, as only one in 1000 hatchlings reaches adulthood.

Collaboration among Sunshine Coast Council, councillors, Kabi Kabi First Nation Peoples, Queensland Government, independent Technical Advisory Panel and community leaders of TurtleCare, Coolum and North Shore & Bribie Island Turtle Trackers, has shaped the draft plan.

It supports efforts by the Queensland and Australian governments' efforts to stop the decline of marine turtle populations and guides the council's decision-making efforts for conservation and management goals for nesting marine turtles and hatchlings within the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area.

The plan sets out 3 desired outcomes and supportive themes:

A new plan aims to save one of the Sunshine Coast's most beloved marine animals by supporting the recovery of self-sustaining populations of marine turtles.

The goal is to reduce threats, improve habitat quality, and strengthen communitybased management to ensure the nesting and hatchling success of critically endangered loggerhead and vulnerable green turtle populations.

The Sunshine Coast Council is seeking input from the community on the draft Sunshine Coast Marine Turtle Conservation Plan.

The plan envisions a future where marine turtles thrive on the Sunshine Coast in harmony with people.

The populations of loggerhead turtles nesting along the Queensland coastline, including Sunshine Coast beaches, have significantly declined, making them critically endangered.

Sustained population growth for three generations is needed to remove marine turtles from the threatened species list. The plan emphasizes the importance of

1. Strategic planning and policy guidance for turtle-sensitive lighting and coastal development.

2. Regional marine turtle recovery actions.

3. Sunshine Coast community based TurtleCare program delivery.

The community can provide feedback on the draft plan by visiting Council’s Have Your Say website at haveyoursay.sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au before June 16, 2022.

the state. Under current laws, young repeat violent offenders are able to walk away from their crimes with little more than a slap on the wrist. There’s no punishment, no consequences for actions, and innocent Queenslanders like the Beaumont family are paying the ultimate price.

Queenslanders deserve strong laws that put the rights of victims ahead of offenders, and it’s about time the Government started listening.

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Coolum Beach for the second annual clean-up. The event was hosted by the Coolum Surf Club and Coolum and Northshore Coastcare, and I was proud to help sponsor it alongside Gage Roads Brew Co. We are so blessed to have such a pristine local environment, but it is one that we all need to take responsibility for.

PARLIAMENT

The youth crime crisis has once again come under the spotlight in Parliament, with more tragic stories of innocent lives being lost at the hands of repeat young offenders. During the last sitting week, a petition signed by more than 7000 Queenslanders was tabled, which called for urgent reforms to the state’s revolving door youth justice system.

I was proud to sponsor the petition, which was launched by the Beaumont family last year, following the death of 15-year-old Angus Beaumont who was killed in 2020 during an altercation with 2 young recidivist offenders, one of whom was out on bail.

In 2015 the Attorney General Yvette D’Ath started watering down the youth justice laws which has resulted in the youth crime crisis impacting communities right across

CONSISTENCY AND CONFIDENCE

MY TOP 3 TIPS TO MASTER CONSISTENCY IN GOLF

The number one recommendation I have for you to be a consistent golfer is establishing a pre shot routine that looks and behaves the same every time. This approach ensures you prepare you body and mind for each swing in a consistent manner. Specifically focusing on alignment, grip and posture in every swing. By following the same set of actions before every swing, you create the two “C’s”; consistency and confidence.

The second most important factor is developing a repeatable swing. By focusing on fundamental principles and ingraining muscle memory through repetition you can develop a consistent swing that produces the shots you desire more often than not. I highly recommend you seek professional

advice and get a clear understanding of what you should be practising or thinking about to hone that swing and get the results you want.

The third and final task to get the consistency of your dreams is mental resilience. Managing a positive mindset and emotions are key to playing the best 9 or 18 holes of your life. Commit to each swing with confidence, let go of mistakes and setbacks and most importantly stay in the present moment for the shot at hand.

Hope you enjoyed, happy golfing Katelyn

EXCITING UPGRADES

TICKLE PARK SHADE

In response to a resident’s request, Tickle Park is scheduled to have its shade sail extended to further protect the toddler play equipment from the sun.

NEW PATHWAY FOR DOONAN CREEK RESERVE

Doonan Creek Environment Reserve is an important coastal habitat area with vegetation that ranges from iconic coastal heath, scribbly gum forest to melaleuca wetlands.

It’s home to more than 125 different bird and 24 different mammal species and vulnerable wallum frogs.

Our community has helped council restore the reserve for many years at various tree planting events, and in the last three years alone, has planted more than 11,700 native trees, shrubs and ground covers.

It’s great news that a new pathway will be constructed to make access to the site more accessible for people of all abilities.

ROAD UPGRADE

The trip along North Arm Yandina Creek Road will soon be a lot less dusty with an upgrade from unsealed to a sealed road.

The first stage of this upgrade will occur over the next few months.

There won’t be a full road closure during the works, however there will be some delays. Council thanks you in advance for your patience.

CYBER SECURITY HIGHLIGHTED AT THE FAIRFAX SENIORS FORUM

Thank you to Living Choice at Twin Waters for hosting my 2023 Seniors Forum, where we discussed cyber security and keeping safe online.

Online safety continues to be a priority issue for many seniors and it was great to hear from the experts - NBN Australia, IDCARE and CAPA Services.

Preventing scammers from reaching our information was the number one message, and below are the top three points taken from the presentations on the day:

1. Stop and think. If you receive unsolicited contact from someone (phone call or email), pause and cease contact to verify what they are saying. Contact the organisation directly using publicly available contact points;

2. Never allow anyone remote access to your computer unless YOU have initiated it; and

3. Consider using a password manager and multi-factor authorisation apps for added layers of security.

If you or a loved one thinks they may have been scammed, contact iDCare on 1800 595 160 or www.idcare.org.

COMMUNITY PHARMACIES

A number of community pharmacies on the Sunshine Coast are under threat due to Labor's new policy on dispensing medicines. My Coalition colleagues and I have called for the government to guarantee that its new policy will NOT:

• harm the viability of community pharmacies;

• adversely affect medicine supplies; and

• increase medicine stockpiling and wastage.

If you’re visiting a community pharmacy,

please be conscious of the pressure they’re under. Some pharmacists are worried about being able to keep their doors open and their staff in jobs as a result of this new Labor government policy.

SUPPORTING VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers are the backbone of our community and they deserve our thanks and support.

Sociologists like Hugh Mackay point to the Sunshine Coast as a region that has the highest levels of ‘social capital’, evidenced, in part, by the number of residents who volunteer their time to help others.

We should be justifiably proud of this commitment to our local community and that’s why I was delighted to secure funding of $66,000 to support local volunteers under the latest round of Volunteer Grants.

The funding will be shared between 34 community groups in Fairfax, including:

• $3,745 to Coolum Beach Meals on Wheels;

• $1,500 to Coolum and North Sore Coast Care;

• $1,500 to the Coolum Cricket Club;

• $1,200 to the Coolum State School P&C; and

• $1,500 to the Coolum Football Club.

A full list of successful groups can be found on my website at www.tedobrien.com.au.
