a note from the publishers

W

elcome to the fourth edition of Pet Junction Directory! If this is your first time at the rodeo we welcome you with open wings and wet, cold noses! Let me just give you a quick tour so you know how to use this directory. We are not a yellow pages so we don’t go in straight alphabetical order. We break everything down into main categories and within those main categories we break things down further into specific categories. For instance, if you are looking for a cat groomer, the main category would be cat and the subcategory would be groomer. Don’t worry, it’s easy to get used to and super easy to use! We’ve even color coded each section so there’s no way you can get lost. Now that we have got that down pat let’s move to the fun stuff. We have really packed this issue full of fun facts,

statistics, did you knows and articles. Not to mention tons of businesses who are ready and super willing to serve you. You are going to find so much fun stuff in this directory, you won’t want to put it down and we hope you don’t! The businesses in this directory have made it possible for us to offer this priceless reference to our community absolutely free. All we ask in return is that YOU make an effort to return the favor by using them for some of your pets’ needs. That’s not too much to ask, is it? A little give and take goes a long way. Now sit back, relax and enjoy perusing our pages and if you find something you really like, hey, let us know! We want to know that we are on the right track so drop us an email. We would love to hear from you! See you in September!

ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS IN LOXAHATCHEE!

The finger monkey is the tiniest living primate in the world. It’s so small that it can hold on to your finger. Finger monkeys are, as a matter of fact, pygmy marmosets. They are also known by the names ‘pocket monkey’ and ‘tiny lion’. These primates belong to the family Callitrichidae, species Cebuella and genus C. pygmaea. They are native to rain-forests of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia.

Hope is a thing with feathers That perches in the soul And sings a tune without words And never stops at all. And sweetest, in the gale, is heard And sore must be the storm That could abash the little bird That keeps so many warm. I’ve heard it in the chilliest land And on the strangest sea Yet, never, in extremity It ask a crumb of me.” - Emily Dickinson

Did You Know...

Check that water!

Water Deprivation can have fatal results! Water bottle malfunctioning is the main cause of water deprivation for companion parrots. If the delivery tube’s ball sticks, or if a bird stuffs an object into the tube, effectively blocking it, a bird will be deprived of water. If an owner doesn’t check that water bottles are working properly every day, it may be days before they recognize a problem, resulting in fatal dehydration. Most birds will die if water is withheld for three days. Water, whether in a bottle or bowl, should be checked daily.

WHAT’S IN A TAIL?

CAT ADOPTIONS - SITTERS • 29

Tail raised and softly curved Friendly cat greeting you. Tail held still, tip twitching Mild irritation.

The cat’s tail is an extension of the spine and is used to help him balance and as an aid to communication. BALANCE: The tail is an important tool to help keep kitty balanced when he walks along a fence. The tail is used as a counterweight, if he looks left, the tail will move in the opposite direction. COMMUNICATION:

The tail can tell us (and other animals) a lot about the cat’s current mood: Tail swishing violently from side to side - Angry cat, possibly about to attack. Tail held to one side - Sexual invitation from a female cat in heat. Tail lowered and fluffed out The cat is fearful. Tail lowered & tucked between the hind legs - A submissive & frightened cat. Tail held straight up & fully bristled The cat is aggressive.

Tail lowered & curved upwards Relaxed cat. Tail sucking: Some cats have a habit of sucking their tail. This is thought to be a throwback to kittenhood when he would suckle from his mother, and not dissimilar to thumb sucking in humans. It is generally harmless unless done excessively, and then there may be some damage. Kinked tail: Some cats, especially Siamese and Burmese can be born with a kink in their tail.

Meet Capitan. Capitan is German Shepherd mix who, following the death of his master Miguel Guzmán in March 2006, abandoned the family home to stand guard at Guzmáns’ grave. No one knows how Capitan found the gravesite but the shepherd has made the gravesite his home for the past seven years. It just doesn’t get more loyal than that!

A LITTLE DOG ANGEL High up in the courts of heaven today a little dog angel waits; with the other angels he will not play, but he sits alone at the gates. “For I know my master will come” says he, “and when he comes he will call for me.” The other angels pass him by As they hurry toward the throne, And he watches them with a wistful eye as he sits at the gates alone. “I know if I just wait patiently that someday my master will call for me.”

And his master, down on earth below, as he sits in his easy chair, forgets sometimes, and whispers low to the dog who is not there. And the little dog angel cocks his ears and dreams that his master’s voice he hears. And when at last his master waits outside in the dark and cold, for the hand of death to open the gate, that leads to those courts of gold, he will hear a sound through the gathering dark, a little dog angel’s bark.

HUMAN!

TRAINING YOURSELF TO TRAIN YOUR DOG

By Jennifer New

O

ne of my mother’s favorite television shows is The Dog Whisperer, a National Geographic Channel program starring the dog behaviorist Cesar Millan and many ill-behaved pooches of all breeds. After watching the show with her for the second time, I rolled my eyes and said, “Mom, this isn’t about messed up dogs, it’s about messed up people!” Okay, two shows does not a fair assessment make, but from what I could see, there are more than a few people out there encouraging poor habits in their dogs. There was man who let his dog sleep on the sofa, but then was embarrassed when the Doberman refused to get down when guests visited. Or the dog that tore up newspaper and magazines in a frenzy, clearly finding its owner’s high-pitched, nervous reprimands as an overture for play. Most disturbing, was the woman who laughed nervously when her dog growled and nipped at her son! In too many cases, the dog was the one in control - not the person, much like a petulant toddler who wails and connives until getting his way. While there are a few important, but simple, things to keep in mind when trying to train or retrain your dog, probably the most important thing to keep in mind is that you may have to retrain yourself first. ASSUME THE LEADER-OF-THE-PACK ROLE

Dog trainers agree that the first thing to understand in establishing good habits in your dog is that dogs operate in a pack mentality.

Descendents of wolves, they operate in a group and have one of two roles: leader or follower. In a human household, the human is the leader, the dog is the follower. No other arrangement will work in the long run. It’s your responsibility to be in control and provide clear guidance to your dog in a calm, non-threatening manner. We’ve all heard a person yell, “No! No! No!” at a barking dog, and we’ve all heard the dog continue to bark. And yet, the person doesn’t stop to think, “Hmmm, this isn’t working” People, it turns out, aren’t very good at retraining themselves. PREPARE YOURSELF TO SPEND TIME TRAINING

Having a dog means providing a certain level of time and energy to it, especially to provide much needed exercise. In its earliest weeks - even years - in your house, it takes especially focused time to teach the dog good behavior. As I consider whether my family will get another pooch when my dog Hannah passes away, I keep this in mind: Do I have the energy and attention it would require to train a new member of our pack? Last year, when I got my first cat, I was amazed by the way it came home, looked around, discovered its food and litter box and that was pretty much that. What about the nights of whining in the kitchen? The weeks of toilet training? The nipping and pulling on the leash? I’d done all of that with Hannah and the end result was a dog that understood the rules and has been a gentle companion for my kids and me. She’s a gem, but not by chance.

Where Pets and People Intersect NIP BAD BEHAVIOR IN THE BUD ... NOW

Most dog trainers agree that a good human pack leader will actively discourage the following habits and replace them with those that follow: • Don’t give your dog scraps directly from the table. If you want to treat your pooch to “human” food, put the food in her bowl so you don’t encourage table-begging. • Excessive barking should not be tolerated; instead, figure out what’s making a dog bark and help your dog relearn its reaction to that person or event. Millan recommends using a consistent look, sound, or physical correction to stop the barking and waiting until your dog completely submits before you resume what you were doing before the barking began. • Chewing on human belongings, such as shoes, magazines, or furniture will only lead

PET • 65

to sorrow (something I learned when my puppy first destroyed a copy of my wedding tape and then my address book!); rather, dogs need their own toys for chewing. Teach your dog what you want her to chew by replacing the wrong chew toy (your shoes) with the right one (her toys). Praise her lavishly when she chews her toys. • Pulling on the leash and other poor leash behavior should be corrected early on so that dogs and people can enjoy plenty of good exercise together. Every time your dog pulls the leash so there’s tension, try completely stopping and not moving. When your dog turns to look at you, praise her for paying attention to you. Don’t resume walking until there is no tension in the leash. • Dogs should never be allowed to jump up on people at any time, especially when guests are entering your home. Teach your dog a new behavior that replaces jumping and reward him when he does that instead.

things to look for when choosing a pet-friendly hotel

1. Do they require health certificates or

copies of vaccines? As much as that can sound like a pain to get before a trip. It’s a safety measure that has all the guests in mind. What if you are nipped by a stranger’s dog who is staying there? Don’t you want to know that the dog is healthy, had a rabies shot recently, and is ok?

2. What are the rules for leaving a pet

alone in the room? Some hotels will say you can’t leave the dog alone and others will require that you bring your own crate. Some hotels may even have a boarding and daycare facility associated with them so you can bring your pup there while you check out the sights.

3. On the hotel grounds, where are you

allowed to walk your pet? Late night potty breaks mean that it would be good to know where on the hotel property your pet can go and if there are bags to clean up afterwards available.

4. Are there pet supplies available such

as dog bowls? Some hotels have little pet packages of treats, a bed, and bowls. Others are more barebones and only offer a few treats.

5. Do they have a list or resource guide

to the nearest dog parks, vets, pet-friendly restaurants in the area?

6. Are there off-leash and on-leash areas

in the hotel? Some dogs are not as happy to meet other dogs as yours might be and may show aggression when being approached. Ask the hotel what their rule is about entrances, exits, and public areas like the lobby.

7. Are there any restrictions based on size

and breed? While your dog might be ok and allowed, your best friend’s dalmation pit-bull mix might not be and that could toss a monkey wrench into your BFF vacation.

8. What’s the maximum number of pets per

room (or guests allowed) and what are the fees? The last thing you want to experience is being unable to check-in to the hotel because you have two dogs and they only accept one. Ask before you go.

9. Do they offer any extra services? Some

hotels offer dog-walking, dog-sitting, and other amenities for pets who are guests. It’s always good to check and gives you some flexibility in planning what you can do and how long you can go out without worrying about your buddy.

Bigger isn’t always better. Every town has their “name brand” shelter – the one everybody recognizes. What people may not realize is that there are also dozens of small local rescues working just as hard if not harder to save the lives of animals. Many of these rescues are self-funded and are saving hundreds of animals a year. A large portion of rescues will take dogs on the euthanasia list from local shelters and foster them until they find a permanent home. Foster-based rescues also have the added benefit of the dog being socialized in a home versus picking up behavior issues and potentially aggression associated with long periods of time living in a kennel in a shelter.

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR A RESPONSIBLE PET OWNER 1 3 5 7 9

My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.

Place your trust in me -- it is crucial for my well-being.

Give me time to understand what you want of me. Don’t be angry with me for long, and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment. I have only you.

Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when you speak to me. Be aware that however you treat me, I’ll never forget it. Before you hit me, remember that I have Before you scold me for being lazy or teeth that could easily inflict injury, but I uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not choose not to bite you. getting the right food, I’ve been out in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak. Take care of me when I get old. You, too, will grow old.

Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say “I can’t bear to watch it” or “Let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you are there. Remember, I love you.
