RED-TAILED BLACK COCKATOO All about the majestic Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo
R
ed-tailed black cockatoos are around 24 inches in length and sexually dimorphic. The male's plumage is all black with a prominent black crest made up of elongated feathers from the forehead and crown. The bill is dark grey. The tail is also black with two lateral bright red panels. Females are black with yellow-orange stripes in the tail and chest, and yellow grading to red spots on the cheeks and wings. The bill is pale and horn-coloured. The underparts are barred with fine yellow over a black base. Male birds weigh between 1.5–2 lb, while females weigh slightly less at 1.25– 1.75 lb. In common with other cockatoos and parrots, red-tailed black cockatoos have zygodactyl feet, two toes facing forward and two backward, that allow them to grasp objects with one foot while standing on the other, for feeding and manipulation. Black cockatoos are almost exclusively left-footed (along with nearly all other cockatoos and most parrots).
around four years of age, but have paler yellow barred underparts. As the birds reach maturity, males gradually replace their yellow tail feathers with red ones; the complete process takes around four years.
Juvenile red-tailed black cockatoos resemble females until puberty, which occurs

Hand-raised birds can be bought for anywhere between $15,000 to $40,000 in the United States, where they are seldom seen in aviculture.
“
“
As with other cockatoos, the red-tailed black cockatoo can be very long-lived in captivity; in 1938, ornithologist Neville Cayley reported one over fifty years old at Taronga Zoo. Another bird residing at London and Rotterdam Zoos was 45 years and 5 months of age when it died in 1979.
The red-tailed black cockatoo is listed as vulnerable on the NSW Threatened Species Conservation Act (1995). Like many Australian cockatoos and parrots, the red-tailed black cockatoo is threatened by the thriving illegal trade in bird smuggling. High demand and high transit mortality mean that many more birds are taken from the wild than actually sold.

THE NOSE
KNOWS
By Franny Syufy, Cats Expert
Cats’ Amazing Sense of Scent Did you know that a cat’s sense of smell is fourteen times stronger than a human’s?
T
hat is because its total nasal organ is comparatively larger than that of a human. Cats depend on their sense of smell for their very survival; in fact it could be said that a cat’s nose is its most important organ. A cat uses scent to sniff out food, mates, enemies, and to seek out his own territory, which he has previously marked. It is easy then to see that the world of a cat is the world of scents and odors. HOW DOES A CAT USE HIS NOSE? TO SMELL FOOD Right after birth, the blind kitten will use his sense of smell to locate his mother and to latch onto a teat. From then on, a cat’s sense of smell will lead him to food, sometimes in the unlikeliest places. A cat with an active URI, or an aging cat, may have a reduced sense of smell, and go “off” his food (taste is associated with smell). You can help by warming the food slightly, to enhance its odor. TO LOCATE A MATE Female cats in heat (in their estrus cycle) exude a powerful sexual pheremone that

can be scented by a male for great distances. If you’ve ever been entertained by choruses of lusting Toms outside your home while your unspayed female cat tries every means of escape, you’ll appreciate this phenomenon. Female cats can also scent out a preferred mate by his territorial markings. ESTABLISHING TERRITORIAL LINES Male cats mark their territory with urine or with pheromones from glands in their face and feet. They will travel their territorial boundaries frequently, sniffing at their markings, and reapplying when the odor diminishes. Other male cats will smell the markings and either respect the territory, or attempt to take it over by introducing their own scent markings.

the vomeronasal organ, most oftenly known as the Jacobson’s Organ. It is located inside the mouth, just behind the front teeth, and connects to the nasal cavity. Opening his mouth slightly enables the Jacobson’s Organ to open up the ducts connecting to the nasal cavity. The appearance of the cat as he brings air into the Jacobson’s Organ has sometimes been likened to a “smile,” other times to a grimace which is called the Flehman Response.. The Jacobson’s Organ seems to play a large part in the sense of smell of a cat, judging by its frequency of use around my house. According to Valeriy ILYICHEV, Doctor of Biology, there are three hypotheses on the exact function of the Jacobson’s Organ. The first is to perceive the smell of food; the second, as a “sixth sense” to help predict unusual occurrences, e.g., earthquake, volcanic eruption; and the third is for perception of sexual odors - pheromones.

If your pet is microchipped, keeping your emergency contact information up to date and listed with a reliable recovery database is essential to you and your pet being reunited. • Gather contact information for emergency animal treatment. Make a list of contact information and addresses of area animal control agencies including the Humane Society or ASPCA and emergency veterinary hospitals. Keep one copy of these phone numbers with you, and one in your pet’s emergency supply kit. Obtain “Pets Inside” stickers and place them on your doors or windows, including information on the number and types of pets in your home to alert firefighters and rescue workers. Consider putting a phone number on the sticker where you could be reached in an emergency. And, if time permits, remember to write the words “Evacuated with Pets” across the stickers, should you evacuate your home with your pets. 3. Be prepared for what might happen. Some of the things you can do to prepare for the unexpected, such as assembling an emergency supply kit for yourself, your family and your pets, is the same regardless of the type of emergency. However, it’s important to stay informed about what might happen and know what types of emergencies are likely to affect your region. Be prepared to adapt this information to your personal circumstances and make every effort to follow instructions received from authorities on the scene. With these simple preparations, you can be ready for the unexpected. Those who

take the time to prepare themselves and their pets will likely encounter less difficulty, stress and worry. Take the time now to get yourself and your pet ready. “Sometimes assistance is needed to care for a pet when emergencies present, like during an evacuation when a shelter or lodging facility does not allow pets. In such instances, it’s prudent to have a backup plan in place to ensure you can secure proper care for your pet. As FEMA notes, one option is to ‘consider family or friends outside your immediate area who would be willing to take in you and your pets in an emergency.’ However, when you don’t want to burden or impose on family members or friends, or subject a beloved pet to kennel boarding to avoid what can be serious health concerns, highly trained and reliable professional pet sitters to visit or board a pet can be prearranged or are available on-call to ensure a pet receives protection as well as love, attention and skilled treatment while apart from the family. That kind of peace of mind is priceless.”

Neither Pet Junction nor any of our affliates are responsible for the outcome of your interaction with them. Bigger isn’t always better. Every town has their “name brand” shelter – the one everybody recognizes. What people may not realize is that there are also dozens of small local rescues working just as hard if not harder to save the lives of animals. Many of these rescues are self-funded and are saving hundreds of animals a year. A large portion of rescues will take dogs on the euthanasia list from local shelters and foster them until they find a permanent home. Foster-based rescues also have the added benefit of the dog being socialized in a home versus picking up behavior issues and potentially aggression associated with long periods of time living in a kennel in a shelter.
