Lap It Up Here we are again chock full of pretty, handsome, cute, “you name it we got it” rescue animals. The last few months were really busy on the rescue front, and with more and more rescue groups finding themselves at capacity they are always on the look out for new foster homes, so please keep that in mind. After many requests in the past from people desperate to find their lost pets, or a better avenue to re-home their pets, we have opened the doors to a new classified section. We are disappointed with the internet sites that continually support pets being given away unaltered. In PRM pets for re-homing will need proof of altering and current vaccinations. We hope by doing this to provide a safer avenue for responsible pet guardians who can no longer home their pet, but wish to see him/her safe and secure in a new home. In our next issue we will provide helpful information on re-homing a pet. In the meantime, as always the key factor in successfully re-homing a pet is by being thorough and allowing as much time as possible. We would also like to welcome some new southern Alberta organizations that have joined the PRM pack. The The Herding Dog Rescue (pg 20) and The Last Chance Cat Ranch (pg 21) have many rescues looking for new homes, and for the right match - the drive is never too long. Last but, not least, we’d like to congratulate Rescue For Life and Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue for winning the 25K and 10K Pepsi Resfresh grants (respectively). Thanks to all our readers who voted! Tail Of The Month by Robyn Rosen

Scent of the Missing By Susannah Charleston

Scent of the Missing is an eye-opening true tale into the world of crime scene investigation with a twist - a dedicated canine is the leader on this journey. Susannah Charleston, a flight instructor who formerly piloted disaster searches, sheds light on the dark and sometimes dangerous world of animal-guided search and rescue. Charleston has an exceptional ability to visually transport you to the ominous forests and desolate warehouses she and her Golden Retriever Puzzle frequent in the search for the missing. As you read you will hear the crunch of branches under your feet, see Puzzles’ blonde tail waving as she swiftly searches with her nose to the ground, and you will feel the desperate ache Charleston does, the hope of finding the missing alive. This true story of Charleston and Puzzles’ deep connection and loyal partnership is not only suspenseful and captivating; it is highly educational in giving a detailed view of the grueling world of search and rescue, the training and personality traits required of the handlers, and the qualities needed for any breed of dog to be successful serving the families who desperately need their help. prm 4

Humane Animal Rescue Team My name is Cracker and I am a young Husky/Shep X. I was rescued with a face full of quills but I felt much better after surgery and I eat more than crackers these days! I am very smart, take treats very gently, and I already know how to sit, shake a paw & lie down. I’m also a dream to walk on leash and like to stay close. My name is Eddie. I am a big, loveable, cuddly and handsome young boy who wants to share my life with someone looking for a new best friend. I like to play and have fun, but I am a quick learner too. I already know how to sit, shake a paw & lay down. Being a Lab X, I have lots of natural exuberance for life! Neeso means one and I’m hoping that I can be “the one” for you. I am a Lab/Shep X who loves to play and explore. I am not yet a year old and my training is coming along very well. I used to be a little bit timid but now I have no fear! I am outgoing and enjoy meeting new people & dogs.

My foster mom says I look my happiest when I am running around the dog park. My name is Ripley and I am very social, I haven’t met a dog yet that I didn’t get along with! I can be a bit shy with new people but I get over it pretty quick - especially if they have treats! I would love another dog buddy in my new home.

My name is Cleo (pace, pace, pace) and I can’t help pacing while I am waiting for my forever home. I’m a 4-5yr old German Pincher. I love people but can be a little shy when I first meet them. I also enjoy playing with my dog buddies and cats don’t bother me. I can’t wait to meet you please call soon.

My name is Bart and I am a Jack Russell Terrier around 4yrs old. I still have high energy and I will need a home that can give me lots of mental stimulation. I have been playing with a lot of larger dogs in daycare and doing wonderful, but the smaller dogs just can’t seem to handle my energy!

Hello! Hello! Hello! (spin, spin, spin) My name is Keeper cause that is what I want to be to someone, a keeper. I am a Retriever X, so my brains and energy will likely keep my forever home on the go. I just know I have what it takes to be a shining star at some sort of dog sport, I will even let you choose which one!!!

Lakota here! and I’m so sick of hearing Toffee go on about her 10 seconds of fame <insert eye roll> ... besides I looked fantastic and clearly stole the show! I am a lot like our beautiful & loving mom Myla. I’m always looking and learning with my big brown eyes, and I LOVE belly rubs. I am pretty easy going, just rub my belly and I’ll be your best bud forever...yep, that’s all it takes!

My name is Toffee and I am the largest of the litter. I’m also a star and you can view my debut in the music video “Fallen” by Tupelo Honey which is on their new album “Caught Up In The Excess”. I am not afraid to bust my way in when necessary, and did I mention I’m a star? I am a super sweet little gal who loves to stir the pot and keeps everyone laughing.

My name is Sidney and I’m the runt of the litter, but I cause the biggest waves! In fact you may as well just call me Monkey Trouble as I’m in to everything and tend to guide the rest of the pack in to all the places you don’t want puppies to be. I made the video shoot very challenging for the patient crew from Rattlesnake Films. I love to play soccer and will fetch any toy that makes noise.

They call me Ovechkin and I am most definitely a mama’s boy. I can act tough, but really I’m kind of a wimp and I live to cuddle & get kisses. I know how to fetch already, how smart am I? It was exciting for the four of us to be in a music video, the only thing better would be my very own forever family finding me here. You’ll never forget to smile with me!

My name is Cookie (AKA Snuggles) and I am 2-3yrs old. I am a Lab X that was found barely alive at a garbage dump. With a lot of vet care, I am slowly gaining weight (12lbs so far!), but I’m still skinny at 42lbs. I LOVE MY PEOPLE and I am already house & crate trained. local stories...local people...local pets

I’m Tifa. My 2 puppies have been adopted, and now I need my own home. I am house trained and great indoors. I am very calm, well mannered, and would be great with kids. I also sit nicely for treats & meals, and I adore playing in the yard.

My name is Nibbs and I am a Doberman X around 1.5yrs old. I get along great with other dogs but I should go to a home without small children as they move fast & spook me sometimes. I love to run & play but most of all I LOVE my people. My name is Bindi. Less than 24hrsafter rescue I tested positive for the deadly Parvo virus. I was VERY lucky to beat the odds, so many puppies pass without having the chance to touch anyone’s heart or ever be missed. Parvo is so easily prevented; all it takes is a simple vaccination.

Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection (NASAP) Good day! My name is Tulip and I was found outside, starving, near a business in Leduc. Needless to say, I am just loving the food & warmth in my foster home and I’m feeling much better. I’m the biggest lap cat you will ever meet and I’m a total purr monster.

My name is Blossom and I was a stray who ended up in the pound. I’m a very loveable young lady who is a little shy at times - but I’m not too reserved about getting my tummy rubs and lots of cuddles! I am around 1yr old and I can’t wait for my loving new family to find me.

My name is Ruby and I’m a lovely young torti with stunning green eyes. I’m a chatty, playful and inquisitive kitty who would love a spot beside you on your couch (or bed) for cuddle time. If you’d like an outgoing & playful cat I’m your girl! Aren’t we cute? I’m Squeak and the handsome tabby next to me is my pal Jimmy. We are both 7yrs old and have huge, wonderful personalities. I love watching the world from the window and Jimmy is the ultimate super love-bug! We will be a great pair for a wonderful and loving home.

Hi, I’m Squeakus and that’s me on the left. I am 2yrs old and that little rug rat next to me is my son, Brownie. We get along great together and promise to bring hours of entertainment to our loving new home. We adore our veggie treats and hope to meet you really soon.

We are sponsored by Billie. Thanks for helping a friend.

Love at first tail wag Tails from Home By: Robyn Rosen

H

i, Echo and Gnash here! Do you have a second to spare? We are dying to tell you our real life true love story. We are two of the luckiest, oh and did we mention cutest?, puppies of all time and it’s all thanks to our wonderful two legged family. They brought us together when life was rough and made us believe that love really does make the world go round. My story first! Hey I’m Gnash, the cuter of the two of us if you’re asking me…I’m a Terrier Shepherd cross and I’m a year and a half old. I was just a wee baby when myself and my siblings, Crosby, Stills and Young, were found all by ourselves in the cold fields of Northern Alberta. We missed our mom dearly and were so grateful to the kind people who saved us and gave us a warm bed to cuddle in. My foster mom said we were famous; they even put our pictures on the internet! It didn’t take long for our fans to come begging for our autographs, and three of these fans said I deserve to be a solo act and they’d love to give me my very own home to play in. I had to con10

sider the perks you know; free food, unlimited treats, a huge backyard full of toys…yeah sounded good to me! I said so long to my litter mates and eagerly followed my new two legged family out to the car and on to my future. Life was good for me. I spent my days with my two legged best friend, Steve, and we went on adventures to the pet store, dog park, and to a farm of all places! Man those horses are fun to chase…for some reason they aren’t fond of me being at their heels though. Go figure! Anyway, life was good but I got pretty lonely when my family had to go to “no dogs allowed” events (what fun are those anyway?) so I started hinting that I needed a playmate to keep me company. Well my faithful friend Steve agreed and we hopped in the truck to find me a forever friend. My turn now! Hello, I’m Echo and I’m a gorgeous grey Husky Shepherd cross and I’m two years old. I’m the more outgoing of the two of us, and my past is a bit more mysterious. I can tell you that I spent a lot of time by myself and I learned how to hunt and survive all on my own, but all I

wanted was a warm bed to snuggle in. As luck would have it a kind person rescued me from the side of the highway and brought me to my foster family, who in turn brought me to a super cool pet store where I got to meet a whole lot of nice people! They all seemed okay, but it wasn’t until Gnash and Steve walked in the door that I decided where I was meant to go. Gnash made a beeline right for me and after the obligatory bum sniff we were engaged in a rowdy game of wrestling, knocking into peoples shins and knocking toys off the shelves with our batting tails. Steve had no choice but to adopt me before we got ourselves kicked out of the store! And so life began for us, and boy has it been a good one so far. We spend our days playing in the backyard, going for long walks in the forest with our mom, and running through the fields at the farm, although we keep a good distance from those horses kicking hooves now! Life is a beautiful thing and we couldn’t be happier to be sharing it with each other and our wonderful loving family. prm local stories...local people...local pets

California Dogs A personal account of Camp Cocker Rescue fosterer Angela Hunter T

he importation of homeless dogs from American shelters has long been debated in Alberta’s rescue community. It is a source of contention and it is likely a consensus that will never be reached. My recent involvement in the re-homing of cocker spaniels from California has prompted me to address this issue from a personal perspective.

My husband and I have been extensively involved with a local rescue organization for over four years. We have fostered and found permanent homes for over 60 dogs. I have served on the board of directors and actively participated in fundraising efforts. Devastated by the unexpected passing of our beautiful cocker and best friend, Lexi, we were compelled to focus specifically on cocker spaniel rescue, a fitting tribute to our girl. The ‘No More Homeless Pets’ conference in Las Vegas last year made me aware of the critical situation throughout the United States. Overcrowding coupled with a lack of resources signify high shelter kill rates and deplorable animal welfare conditions. Encouraged by the overwhelming success of the ‘Califor12

nia Canine Cuties’ program operated by the Edmonton Humane Society, we were spurred into action. For those not familiar with the California Cuties, this program was implemented to discourage Albertans from purchasing dogs from pet stores or advertisements, which are often affiliated with backyard breeders or puppy mills. Large breeds are more common at the EHS but unfortunately, can be ill suited to particular lifestyles. The lack of suitable dogs can drive potential adopters to seek small breeds from a less than reputable source. The EHS periodically transports dogs from California shelters, where breeds like yorkies, maltese terriers, poodles, and chihuahuas are always in over abundance. Since 2008, over 300 dogs facing certain death in California shelters have found homes in Alberta. Similarly, families interested in adopting a cocker may inadvertently turn to backyard breeders or puppy mills if one is not available. With this in mind, our primary aim became to reduce the market for poorly bred cockers in Alberta and of course, save the lives of others as part of Lexi’s legacy. After a great deal of research, we contacted local stories...local people...local pets

Cathy Stanley, founder of Los Angeles based ‘Camp Cocker Rescue’. We soon discovered the dedicated, passionate nature of this organization. Camp Cocker has a handful of foster homes that are always at capacity. At any given time, there are 30 to 100 cockers in LA shelters, many of which require medical attention or behavior modification as a result of poor socialization or abuse. In some shelters, turnaround time is less than 24 hours due to overcrowding. This means dogs have less than a day to be adopted or pulled by rescue before they are euthanized. To bring them to safety, Camp Cocker is often forced to put dogs in boarding facilities because there simply aren’t enough foster homes. Transporting dogs to Canada provides them with a secure home environment, something they may have never experienced. Canadian volunteers are thoroughly screened prior to their acceptance into the program. They, in turn, carefully evaluate potential adoptive families. This process includes a lengthy application and interview, home and reference checks, and post-adoption follow-ups. Once a suitable home is found, Camp Cocker is responsible to the dog for the entirety of its life, even in Canada.

below the poverty level. A lot of immigrants who don’t speak the language, they have different customs when it comes to animals. They don’t believe in going to a vet, not ever, not for any reason. If a dog is sick, they bring it to a shelter and buy a new puppy from a backyard breeder. The backyard breeders are mostly operating in these low-income communities and breed not for health, just for profit. You can buy a five- week old cocker puppy on the streets of downtown Los Angeles for $240 cash. Animal control won’t do anything to stop the sale of live animals like this - if a street vendor is asked for a license or permit, they just find another street corner to sell puppies on.” In reference to the severity of the animal abuse Cathy encounters on a daily basis, she writes: “In our shelters, you will see sick dogs. Dogs that have suffered an entire life of neglect. Emaciated, starved dogs. Dogs with no fur from mange that was never treated. Old, frail, elderly dogs that were turned in for being “too old” (a surge of seniors coming into shelters begins the last week of November and does not end until after the holiday season). Rather than spending their golden years in the loving care of their families, they spend the last moments of their life cold, terrified and alone. I just want you to be prepared if we go to a shelter. I’m sorry, Angela, sorry that this is the way it is here. I hate it but it is why I keep doing rescue, for the dogs that have no voice and are stuck in these awful shelters.”

“Adoptive families are thankful. They recognize a dog in need is a dog in need, regardless of which side of the border they came from.”

Camp Cocker Rescue attributes the appalling conditions in California and other parts of the US to a number of factors. They have been hit much harder by the recession. Unemployment has surged and many are living at or below the poverty line. People who cannot feed their families are abandoning animals in record numbers. In addition to an economic issue, there is also a cultural component to this problem. Los Angeles has a large immigrant population and dogs are not always considered family members as they may be in other parts of N. America. Unimaginable neglect and abuse is commonplace. I asked Cathy if she would take me to local shelters while I was there. The following is an excerpt from her e-mail response and is a true indication of what she experiences as a rescuer in Los Angeles: “I am not sure if taking you to the shelters is something you can handle emotionally. I can barely handle it myself and I’ve been doing this for years. One shelter visit might haunt you for life. It can be your decision, but you should prepare yourself that it is nothing like you are accustomed to in your area. The problem here is that nearly half of our population is living in poverty or local stories...local people...local pets

I knew immediately that I could not turn my back on this problem. I traveled to Los Angeles in November 2010 to bring back my first two Californian rescues, beautiful boys Freddy and Ducky. The response from the community has, for the most part, been extremely positive. Many local rescue groups have been very supportive, acknowledging that we are all in this together, working towards a common goal with a shared passion for saving animal lives. Adoptive families are thankful. They recognize a dog in need is a dog in need, regardless of which side of the border they came from. Some of the resistance we have encountered is predominantly from those who insist resources should remain close to home. We urge people to educate themselves regarding the enormity of the problem in the US. Without this information, it is difficult to understand why some groups choose to address someone else’s problem. It is my view that we are not only helping US dogs, but also addressing continued on pg 19 pet rescue magazine

New Beginnings Rabbit Rescue

Please remember this Easter season that a pet is forever and if you are “purchasing” a bunny to make sure it’s chocolate!

I will be 2yrs old at the end of April just like my brother Moses. My name is Skittles and I am a bit of a tomboy, always playing and digging. I can be very silly diving under a fresh pile of hay & coming up with a poof of grass on my head! I would do well with another bun in my new home.

My name is Blitzen and after this last winter I am ready for warmer days! I am a SUPER friendly boy who just turned 2yrs old. I love having my head rubbed & getting outdoors in my x-pen. I would do well with another bunny in my new home and a kind human to cuddle with.

My name is Shyla and it’s hard to believe, but I have been here over 2 years now. Just after I was rescued I gave birth to 8 little ones. I hope my future family will have lots of time to spend with me and maybe even another bunny to play with.

Hello everybun! It’s Bella & Leo here, we used to live outside in a park where we were getting chased by coyotes and weasels. We feel so lucky to have been rescued. We are very spoiled now and even get our favorite treats like cilantro & parsley. We’re a great pair and good about using our litter pans.

It is hard to believe I’m still here after being on the cover of PRM in the Dec/Jan issue. They call me Moses and I am such a friendly guy. I only weigh about 3lbs and as you can see in my picture I LOVE dried papaya. I will be 2yrs old at the end of April and I’m looking for a home with lots of space to run about because I’m a really active fellow!

www.championsrabbits.webs.com

Grande Prairie SPCA My name is Nixon and I am a 2yr old Rotti X. I came to the shelter last October and I’m hoping my new family will discover me soon. I am a lovely boy and I adore everyone, big or small. If you are looking for a loving dog who will adore you forever, please come check me out.

Whiskers here, I was abandoned with my siblings. I am a 4yr old, female, orange tabby. I am a very independent girl who would love nothing better than a kind friend, a safe home and a warm fire to curl up in front of.

My name is Ainsley and I am 1yr old. I like other cats and love to be cuddled. I’ve been here over 6mths…all dressed up in my best tuxedo with nowhere to go. Maybe you and I could make some plans to meet?

I am sponsored by the Siebert Family. Thank You!

I came with Albert. My name is Fiona and they say I can be a bit of an ogre, but that’s only when I’m hungry. Guess I just have a healthy appetite and appreciate good grub! We were surrendered last fall when our owners moved and were unable to bring us along.

My name is Albert and I am a noble skinny pig. I came with my sister Fiona when our owners moved and could not take us. We would love it if you could give us a chance and be our furever home.

Hinton & District SPCA They call me Jersey. I am a 2yr old German Shepherd and I love to be with my canine and human friends, but don’t really care too much for cats. I have some separation anxiety issues but I’m willing to work on that. I am pretty strong so I need a family who can handle my energy.

My name is Lacey and I am a Wire Haired Terrier. I came to the shelter with my puppies and they have all been adopted out to good homes. Now it is my turn to find a loving family of my own. I am still pretty scared of new people so I am hoping for a patient and loving home where I can gain some confidence.

I am a gorgeous Malamute named Keira. I am 10mths old and I LOVE to playplayplay! I also love people but I can be a bit of an escape artist so you best be keeping an eye on me. I am a smart girl and can’t wait to be part of an active family.

Look into my gorgeous eyes! My name is Moonie and I am a 2.5yr old Lab/Heeler X. I love to play ball and I am well socialized. I am a smart pup and eager to please. I am also good off leash and promise to keep you smiling.

I am a 2yr old Border Collie X named Bella. I love to chase balls, or even mice…you don’t need a house cat when you have a dog like me! I am a sweet & active girl who, like most canines, is eager to please.

My name is Tito and I am a Shepherd X. I am a sweet boy but I can be very shy, particularly around men. I am gaining confidence but I still need a little bit of time to warm up around new people. Maybe when we meet you should bring some cookies!

I am a 5yr old young extremely handsome Havenese X. I am a little shy around new people but I warm up quickly and I am super duper cute. I really want to be part of your pack…wouldn’t I look great on your couch being spoiled rotten?

My name is Sasha and I am 1yr old. They tell me I am a Husky/Shep X and that I have very good off leash skills. I love to play with other dogs, but I can play a little rough sometimes and not every dog appreciates that! I am looking for a new family to call my very own.

ver the years the Rescue community has grown to the point where there are many wonderful organizations dedicated to saving the lives of homeless animals in need of a caring friend. It is not just here in the Edmonton area but wherever there are animals in need around the world. The time seemed right to form an organization that would be a sup16

Animal Rescue Transfer System (ARTS) had its first inklings back when I began trying to move the dogs and cats sitting at a rural Animal Control into Rescue where they would be safe and find a furever family with the safety net of Rescue behind them. It was not enough to contact local Rescues who were often too full to accept another animal. I started reaching further and further afield to ensure a place could be found. Even with the growing number of contacts, there were some consistent barriers that were hard to get past. A Rescue would often say they would be willing to take an animal but did not have room at the moment or they could take the animal if I could get them to Calgary. Most of the animals did not have the luxury of waiting for an opening in Rescue. When the concept for ARTS was forming in my mind, I knew that becoming another Rescue was not the answer. It would not take long before ARTS too was full and could not take another animal either. But what if I could still work with multiple organizations and offer temporary holding homes for up to six weeks while they did some adoptions to make room? The animal would be out of the Pound and safe while awaiting placement! “YES.” That would work. What if I could set up a transportation network to get an animal to its destination? “YES.” That’s the ticket!

April/May 2011

ARTS came together as a group and slowly the concept has been gaining support and momentum. With the incredible addition of Country Kennels as a partner along with individual foster homes, ARTS is able to offer a number of holding homes to Rescue groups and remove animals in danger of euthanization. Every animal in ARTS has a sponsoring Rescue. ARTS has been able to take the pressure off Rescues who found themselves in an unexpected overload with no room. Also, we have assisted with many transports since our inception and would like to see this resource grow. ARTS believes that being in a temporary placement should not mean an animal is in limbo! While staying with ARTS, an animal is taken to Adoption Events, shown to potential adoptive homes and taken to Vet appointments. We are affiliated with Stop Hounding Me Dog Training who has provided assessments for behaviour issue animals and assists all our foster placements. Many of our ARTS placements have been adopted before they are re-united with their respective Rescues. While temporary placements and transports are crucial components to help ARTS operate, there is a quiet side that works hard at getting dogs placed directly into Rescue or advocates for the animals who have lost all hope. We get many requests for help that initiates a search for just the right Rescue and the animal never continued on page 17 local stories...local people...local pets

Spay Neuter Action Program

Hi, my name is Lola. I was having a hard time staying in the kennels at Petsmart so SNAP was considering trying to find me a barn home. However, while in foster care I was so sweet and was actually seeking out human companionship so SNAP decided they would try to find me a loving home. I also don’t like other cats so a barn home would likely be quite stressful for me. I need an experienced cat owner who has the understanding and skill to give a special cat like me a chance. The caregivers at SNAP understand that this type of owner is not common but they think I’m well worth the effort and want to try for my sake. If you want to check me out in my foster home there is a video showing my potential & good nature that can be viewed at http://www.adoptapet. com/pet4841760.html

I’m Craven. I am about 5yrs old and was rescued while wandering about last spring. I was very skinny, sick and both my leg & tail were broken. It took a few months of medical care but I’ve fully recovered and now I’m ready to go. I am really quite sweet and get along well with EVERYONE!

My name is Ebony and I am about 2yrs old. I came to SNAP over a year ago and was initially very scared but over time I have really warmed up. I love to be brushed, get attention, and just hang around with my people. I am a real sweetheart and will make a wonderful companion.

Hi, my name is Fuzz. I came to SNAP last summer and I am about 4yrs old. I love curling up on a warm lap to watch TV and hanging out on the top of those cat condos where I can watch all of the action around me. I do have a higher maintenance coat but it’s beautiful and I love being brushed.

Hello! We are brand new to SNAP and I am the only girl so I better do all the talking! One of my brothers is camera shy but this is the other. We are a mixture of a few breeds and are approximately 12wks old. If you want to know more about us, please contact SNAP.

Hello everyone! We are three of five little fun loving, playful, and energetic kittens looking for somewhere to call home. Our Mom and our other two littermates have all been adopted and we can hardly wait to be next! Don’t you think we are really handsome? We could go to separate homes, or you could adopt us all together...now wouldn’t that be fun!

I was seen for three days laying in the same spot at the edge of a road before I was reported to the Alberta SPCA. The reason I didn’t move was because I was literally frozen in place and

the ice around me had to be chipped away when I was rescued. I am recovering well in my foster home and the vet said I have no lasting damage. I am really friendly with dogs and cats and need a home that will care for me and never let me experience anything like that again. I was so scared and cold! My foster mom calls me..... Marmaduke. Hi, my name is Timothy and I’m the spokesperson for the Sangudo Trio which includes Pretty Face, Puss and me. Our caregiver was an elderly gentleman who was hospitalized and will not be returning home. BARS is more than an hour away from our previous residence but they still came right away to pick us up. Good thing, I was sooo hungry!

Hey, my name is Sandy and I’m Princess Jellybean’s father. Previously we lived just a few paws away from a busy highway where I was clipped by a vehicle. Fortunately I was not seriously injured but I would still like my new home away from busy roads.

My name is Princess Jellybean and I’m 3yrs old. I’m a very well mannered St. Bernard/Retriever X. I love people, I am great with children, and I’m even good with cats! I’m a wonderful guard dog and ideally would love to spend the rest of my life with my father Sandy in a safe & loving home.

Hi there, my name is Milton. I am a very sweet and laid back boy who is extremely partial to tummy rubs and cat nip! SAFE Team thinks I would be best as the only furry friend in my new home. Can I please be your one and only?

Hey, it’s me Rayne! I am a very gentle, sweet and loving girl who adores exploring and playing with my toys. I am always purring so my people know how much I love and appreciate their attention. I would love to be the only furry friend in my new family. I’m ALL the best friend you’ll ever need!

My name is Sydney, I was rescued with my five babies. I guess my people didn’t know what the word “spay” meant. However, I am a very good mother and I am wonderful with other cats, dogs and children. I am also pretty laid back, affectionate and ready to find my new forever (and ever!) home.

Hi there, the name is Todd. I love affection and I always give as good, or better, then I get! I am pretty easy going and like to follow my people around and explore. Belly rubs & ear scratches are my FAV, they make it easier for me to wait patiently for my new home. Would you like to be my new family?

Rescue For Life

continued from pg 13 the local issue of irresponsible breeding. After bringing up our first American dogs, we realized they were truly no different than any local dog we had rescued. They are sweet, loving, and so deserving of a second chance. Certainly, we will continue to be strong advocates of animal rescue in Alberta. We are, however, fully committed to our work with Camp Cocker Rescue. Although we realize we are not making even a small dent in the problem by helping one or two dogs at a time, we are making a world of difference to that dog. And this, we will continue to do in honor of our Lexi. prm

Camp Cocker Rescue My name is Aliyah and I was born without a radius bone in my front left leg. I will likely require an amputation before I am ready for adoption but I’m still on the lookout for my perfect home! My sister Aerial and I are searching for loving & committed families who will continue our socialization and training. My name is Aerial and I came with my sister Aliyah. We are jam packed FULL of puppy energy. We feel very lucky even though we were abandoned because our two other littermates who were not so fortunate. We are small, happy, healthy Cocker Spaniel crosses around 2mths old.

Border Collie Friends Rescue Snoop here! I am a 1yr old playful Border Collie X with a lovely wash-n-go smooth coat. I am a very good boy but do have a little separation anxiety. I like to retrieve and I love to snuggle with kids, but due to my size and enthusiasm I would be best in a home with older children. My name is Skittles. I am a 3yr old, tri-colour Border Collie. I am little skittish, but extremely sweet and my confidence increases the more I am included in daily activities. I can get a little worried about meeting new people but I am easily won over with treats. I can’t wait to have a loving new home!

I also love chasing anything that moves! I was living under a truck for the first few weeks of my life and now I can’t wait to find my own forever family.

I am Kyro. My owners brought me in to be euthanized after the vet discovered I had a bladder infection. My food now averages about $10 more each month but I’m just as sweet as ever! I am a very loving girl who really just wants a comfy bed to sleep on with some hugs and kisses before & after work.

My name is Presley and I think I am a Greyhound X because I lovelovelove to run. If you want a jogging buddy I may be the perfect dog for you. I am pretty big, full of great energy and very gentle in the house. I am also very trusting and excited to meet you!

My name is Moses and really I’m just a smaller version of a lion. I have a soft fluffy coat and a very gentle disposition. I love to sleep on the back of the couch and perch on the top of the cat tree. I am very sweet and would love a home with you.

I am Buddie... can you believe there is a dog under this beautiful long coat of mine? I am a Yorkie/ Daschund X with perfectly stumpy little legs, a long body and the hair of a Yorkie. I am energetic, but I still love laying on the couch and snuggling up close!

I was named Happy because I am the happiest guy around. I get along with absolutely anyone who wants to take me for a walk, brush me, pet me or cuddle me before bedtime. If you want a dog that has the training already done you should definitely come and meet me.

My name is Charlee and I am one handsome boy. I was rescued from the pound but now I spend my days snuggling with my caregivers. I get along great with the dogs, and cats too. I am 4yrs old and have some scars on my face but they are almost healed up. I’m ready to find a home!

I’m Sugarplum the one-eyed kitten. I came in with a severely infected eye that could not be saved but that doesn’t stop me from running around the house after those toy mice! I am super snuggly and would love the chance to show you what a good boy I really am. I also give the best hugs.

The Last Chance Cat Ranch Vote Pepsi Refresh Challenge - www.refresheverything.ca

The Last Chance Cat Ranch has been in operation since 2003 in Lethbridge, Alberta. During that time we have rescued, re-homed, adopted out and helped over 500 cats. As a not for profit society, we rely on donations and limited government grants (Alberta Community Spirit Program), in addition to fundraising when time allows. We are currently competing for $100K in the Pepsi Refresh Challenge to help out with the hundreds of cats that are living in the industrial area of Lethbridge. Smaller surrounding towns and hamlets have no programs in place for helping with the hundreds that are dumped in rural environments. We are grateful for the support that we receive from Pound Rescue (Okotoks/Calgary), Heaven Can Wait (High River); Bail us Out (Irricana) and Tails to Tell (Crossfield). These rescues have helped by taking cats and dogs, in particular Pound Rescue who recently has taken in close to 70 cats. Purrfect Endings also helps with finding homes for special needs cats and dogs from the Lethbridge Animal Shelter (municipal pound). Donations are always in dire need and we are at the point of begging people to vote for us on www.refresheverything.ca so that we can do something about the industrial area. We have some wonderful older cats that have been waiting for their furever homes. All of our cats are altered and vaccinated and extremely social, other than our resident ferals that we are working with. We currently have 86 cats in our rescue and 11 foster homes. The need for adoptions, foster homes and donations is fundamental to our continued operations. I am Buster. I was left behind when my people moved. It was hard living in the yard of the house I used to live in, with no food or water. I am about 12yrs old and my back legs are pretty wobbly but the vet said they have always been that way. I am pretty happy and content to enjoy my life but a home of my own sure would be nice!

My name is Gizmo. My brother Archie and I were found crammed into a little kennel in our garage after our family moved. We were very scared, hungry and thirsty. I am a handsome & healthy fellow and get along with everyone here. I’d love to move to a new home of my own. Would you love me and be my new family?

My name is Butch. I showed up at my foster home pretty scared and it took awhile before I knew it was ok to live in the main house. Life has been good since! Sure would love to have a home of my own though, with a couple of other cats perhaps? I am a very special boy named Monkey who loves people, other cats and dogs. I have been waiting with my sister Starfish for a long time, hoping that someone will finally think that we are the best cats to have in their home. I also have two other sisters named Angelina and Emmy-Lou. My brother Monkey summed it up! We have been waiting patiently hoping that someone will welcome us into their family. My name is Starfish and I am a very dainty girl who doesn’t ask for much. I am quite content to sit and watch the birds out the window. They named me Samson. I was pretty lonely living in a haystack, out in a field, eating mice, but those days are long behind me now. I am about 10yrs old and have been with The Last Chance Cat Ranch for over 8 years. I am in excellent health and would really love to have my own home.

Here is your opportunity to have a voice. Opinion will cover a single topic each issue, and a selection of readers views will be published in our upcoming magazine. This issue: Is shooting cats and dogs a humane form of euthanasia? What’s your Opinion? Last issue we asked the question: Should Edmonton have a subsidized Spay/Neuter clinic where fees are pro-rated to income? Here are a couple of comments, thanks to everyone who responded! Rachel Glube: Although unbelivable....one of the vets we work with in Vancouver does male dogs for $70 and female dogs for $85. Then it is $1.60 per pound after that. Cats are even less. We should have this available locally!! Inge Nielsen: There is only one answer to the population of unwanted dogs and cats.. young and old.. spay and neuter... there is nothing more that Rescue desires than to be put out of business when every birth is a wanted and loved animal.. no one is born in the frigid cold of an Alberta winter, unknown, unloved, unwanted, unnamed.. a resounding YES.. lets make this affordable and available..
