Lap It Up! Time has been flying by and pet rescue magazine is thrilled to be introducing our fifth issue! Grade 3 Class at Niton Junction School Write Letters of Love to PARS Dogs The children of the grade 3 class in Niton Junction put pen to paper and wrote letters to the animals in Prairie Animal Rescue’s care. After completing a fundraising effort to help the animals in need of homes, the children raised $160! Terra McLean, founder of the organization, was extremely touched that the children would open their hearts to help the animals in PARS care. Each student chose a dog and wrote them a letter of hope and love.

Kathy’s tips to help you get started on your pet’s home dental care: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, rubber fingerbrush, or cloth wrapped around your finger along with a flavored toothpaste formulated for pets. Human toothpastes contain detergents that can irritate your pet’s stomach Daily brushing will keep your pet’s mouth clean & because they are unable to healthy spit them out. If you have never brushed your pet’s teeth before, start out slowly. Apply a small amount of toothpaste to your finger and offer it to your pet daily for several days as a reward. Once your pet accepts the toothpaste as a treat, apply it to your pet’s teeth with your finger to simulate the brushing motion of a toothbrush.

After 5-7 days, switch to your chosen toothbrush. Make small, circular strokes along the gumline with the brush angled at 45 degrees so that the bristles will reach up under the gumline. Kathy Istace, AHT, VTS-D (Animal Health Technologist and a Veterinary Technician Specialist in Dentistry) at the Mayfield Veterinary Hospital, Edmonton, will tell you that. Kathy is part of a team at the hospital that is determined to educate pet owners on the importance of preventive pet oral health care.
Treats, toys, oral rinses, and some prescription diets are formulated to help in the control of plaque and tartar. These are not substitutes for brushing. However, they can be used as part of a home dental care regime to assist in the prevention of periodontal disease. Ask your veterinarian what they recommend as not all of these products have been clinically proven or are appropriate for all pets.
All too often she sees the damage that is caused by periodontal disease. (Inflammation and infection of the gums, ligaments, and bone surrounding teeth.) This infection is what causes some pet’s bad breath – and that’s not even close to Mouth showing periodontal disease the end of the story. A sore mouth, bleeding gums, tooth loss, and even infections involving internal organs like the heart and kidneys can result if this disease is not prevented or treated.
If your pet already has red or bleeding gums, tartar buildup, or loose teeth, tooth brushing is no longer enough to treat the problem. A professional cleaning by a veterinarian done while your dog or cat is under anesthesia is necessary to remove plaque and tartar from beneath the gumline, and to assess and treat problem areas. Regular tooth brushing after any problems have been treated is recommended to help prevent further periodontal disease.
“The only way to prevent periodontal disease is by daily tooth brushing. Brushing the teeth disrupts the layer of plaque, preventing the overgrowth of bacteria. It is because plaque builds up so quickly that brushing must be done at least once a day to be effective.” says Kathy. 6

My name is Diego. I am a laid back kind of guy and even though I look tough, I love to be cuddled. My favorite place to relax after a hard day of playing is in my crate where I sleep peacefully all night long. I love to run around with my foster siblings and especially love it when the children from next door drop by to scratch my belly – boy, do I love a good belly scratching!!! Did I mention that I am house trained? I think I would make the perfect addition to a young family that would cuddle me before bedtime and keep up with my strong physical daily regimen of play and spry personality; after all, I do need to stay trim and give the ladies some eye candy!

Hi! I’m Delilah and I am a 1 year old Lab/Retriever/Collie X. I may look small, but I am full of energy and have a lot of love to give. I love playing with anything squeaky and especially love playing tug-o-war with my rope. My foster mom just bought us a huge kiddie pool to splash around in and now I just can’t wait to get to the lake so that I can swim! I am learning all my basic commands and I’m already crate/house trained. I hope to find a young active family that is willing to cuddle and scratch me behind my ears on a daily basis. My name is Sweet Shelby and my foster mom says that I am a hoot!!! I am a very bouncy, friendly girl who loves to be the center of attention. I am very affectionate and love to be with people, but I also get along very well with other dogs, big or small. My favorite activity is playing fetch with my best tennis ball, and I tell ya, I am always ready and so fast that I catch the ball in mid-flight every time! An Apple A Day Daryl Meger, DVM Dr. Meger is a practicing veterinarian and owner of Whitemud Creek Veterinary Clinic, Edmonton One of the most common problems I see with rabbits is that associated with improper care, especially nutrition. Hopefully, this article will help clarify some of the misconceptions about how to feed our small furry friends.
Rabbits make intelligent and friendly pets. They are herbivores designed to do well on grasses and leaves and make the most out of foods that many other animals cannot digest. One of the reasons they can do this is by eating cecotropes. Cecotropes are special droppings rich in organisms packed with nutrients like amino acids, fatty acids and vitamins. Rabbits typically eat these special droppings as soon as they exit the body and they will not typically be seen by the owner unless the bunny is ill. Unlike the small, circular, firm and usually dark brown normal rabbit feces, cecotropes are elongated, greenish in color, coated with mucous and have a strong odor. If you see large numbers of these, it is time to see your veterinarian. The most common problem I see with bunny nutrition is the feeding of too much commercial pellets and starchy foods. Instead, grass hays such as timothy, oat, rye, barley or Bermuda grasses should be the main portion of their diet. Try to feed a mixed grass hay which provides 2 or more kinds of grass. Hay will vary in quality, with sun-dried hay being the best in retaining most of its nutrients. Try to provide fresh smelling hay and allow it to be exposed to the air to avoid excessive dampness. This hay should always be kept available, and should be considered the mainstay of their diet. Legume hays such as alfalfa or clover have alot of nutrients, but may have more calcium, protein and calories than most house pet rabbits require. Excessive feeding of these hays or the pelleted form of these is the leading cause of not only gastrointestinal problems, but urinary problems as well. I am not a huge fan of commercially prepared rabbit pellets, and feel they are generally not continued on page 13

Hello, My name is Angora and I am as soft as my name says. I am an 8mth old pregnant, young lady. I will be giving birth any day now and will be available for adoption as soon as I wean my kittens and get spayed. I will be busy doing the Mom thing for awhile but I am hoping that when I am ready, there will be a wonderful place lined up for me that I can call home forever. I am a young female tuxedo cat that was turned into the Leduc pound as a stray. They call me Sonya and I am quite calm and very independent. I use my litter box and scratching post with no problems. I am fine around other cats until they invade my personal space, at which point I will bat at them…but just a little bit!
I am a 5.5yr old female with a beautiful round face and majestic yellow eyes. My name is Munchkin and I am part Manx although I do have a tail. I am very quiet, affectionate and content to be on my own sleeping in my special places. However, when I come to socialize I am very loving and can be quite chatty. Safe Haven Animal Rescue Society (SHARES) It’s me Corky!!! I am 2 ft tall and about 20 lbs. I like other dogs, cats and travel great in the car. I love to follow my people around the house and outside I like to fetch a ball or play Frisbee. I am around 2-3yrs old, crate and potty trained and I sit calmly when asked...however I need an experienced owner as I can be quite bossy! necessary for pet rabbits on an otherwise balanced diet. Feeding green foods is an excellent way to provide a variety of nutrients and provide water. Make sure the bunny is eating primarily hay and go slowly when initially introducing these foods. Monitor the feces carefully and look for soft stools. There are many greens that you can provide. In general, the more green they are the better. Some specific examples are broccoli, dandelion greens and flowers, parsley, romaine lettuce, brussel sprouts and others. Remember, hay first and then about 1/2 cup of greens per pound of bunny each day. Treat foods should be limited to no more than one-half a tablespoon per pound of bunny each day. These include fresh foods such as kiwi, raspberries, pears, pineapple, strawberries, apples, carrots, melons and others. I see many pet rabbit owners feed commercially prepared treat foods. Their foods often contain excessive amounts of starch and fat. I recommend avoidance of such foods as they can lead to gastrointestinal problems and obesity. Some examples of these are breads, grains in general, seeds, beans and sugary products. If proper diets are provided then rabbits will not need vitamin, salt or mineral supplementation. Remember to also provide a fresh source of water and daily exercise to keep your bunny hopping! local stories...local people...local pets

Children & Puppies
after the dog will relate the baby with the negative of not being allowed in there anymore. Ensure that the pup still gets lots of attention. Relate the baby with “positives” - for example, while changing the baby have puppy treats on the change table and toss one out every so often. Talk to the puppy while you are changing the baby. Allow the puppy to sniff the baby and get to know him. Freshen up on basic commands like sit, down, stay and walk nice — after all you will be walking with a stroller now too.
Children of today will be making and enforcing laws regarding animals in the future...if we teach them respect today we will all have a brighter future.
Take A Walk In Their Paws Nicole Johnston CPDT, Is the owner and a certified trainer at Dogspaw Daycare and Training Centre, Edmonton Under no circumstances should any child and puppy be left unsupervised — even for a minute. It takes a fraction of a second for a dog bite to occur, so turning your back for even a moment could be dangerous. It is important you stay aware and understand how to have puppies and children together safely. Older Children learn a lot from watching how the adults around them treat the puppy. If you are respectful of your puppy, chances are the children around your puppy will be also. These children can be taught safe games to play that do not encourage aggression in puppies such as “hide and seek” or “fetch” instead of chase games or rough play. Encourage older children to take part in training the puppy and monitor them while they do it. Children have a tendency to continuously repeat commands without following through...this only teaches the puppy to ignore commands. Toddlers require the most supervision. Toddlers do not understand what hurts or scares a puppy so if you are not there to protect your puppy, it will be forced to protect itself. A poke in the eye, tripping or falling into the pup, hugging, pulling on tails or ears, are just a few of the scenarios you must prevent. They could make the pup turn around quickly and knock the toddler over or worse yet, snap at the youngster. Give your puppy a place of his own to get away from the children, but ensure that the children know the puppy’s area is off limits to them. It is at this age that you want to teach children not to touch or approach a strange dog without permission from you AND the dogs owner. Do not allow children to carry around puppies. The puppy can get squeezed or squished which can result in defensive aggression when the pup gets older. Instead have them sit and pet the puppy on their lap. Before you bring newborn babies home set up the babies room...crib, change table...and spend some time in there everyday. Sprinkle some baby powder around, rub some lotion on yourself, and turn the baby mobile on so the puppy recognizes the smells & sounds. If anything in the puppy’s lifestyle will change, change it before the baby comes home. For example if the puppy will no longer be allowed in the babies room set the boundaries before you bring the baby home. If you do it 14

Hey, it’s Dewey here! I’m a happy guy and I’m really friendly towards everybody. I love being brushed, it feels so good that I will stand there for as long as you’re willing to brush me! I’m a natural born leader and I am easy to get along with as long as the other dogs around understand that. One thing I don’t like is cats, but other than that I am a pretty mellow fellow! I don’t bark, I’m not overly energetic and I would love to have a family of my very own. Hi! I’m Bridget. Although I’m 8 yrs old, I sure don’t feel like a senior and I don’t look or act like one either! I used to race, but a broken leg ended my career, and I’ve been looking for a new home ever since. My leg didn’t heal very well but it doesn’t bother me. I still like going for walks, and will even race around the yard if another dog wants to play! I love people and attention, and can even be a little sassy if the situation calls for it! I am a cuddler and have a lot of love to share with a family who is willing to open their hearts and home to me. My name is Mac. I’m not a very big greyhound, and I’m told that I’m a real handsome guy with a great personality! I can be a little cautious when I first meet someone, but that’s just me and I get over it real quick. They call me Mischief, but don’t put any stock in my name! I am a 2.5yr old female and as sweet as sweet can be! I spent the better part of the last year caged with little to no time out for playing or being a ferret. Despite being caged up all of that time, I am a gentle, affectionate and more than willing to forgive and forget. I do however have one small issue.....I am scared to death of other ferrets! Dogs and cats are okay but other ferrets.....uh uh no way! One of my favorite things to do is swim - in the water bowl of course! I also adore stuffies and toys with bells on them. I would be a perfect little girl for a first time ferret owner.
Edmonton Reptile and Amphibian Society Rescue Program ERAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to education as well as rescue of reptiles and amphibians in the Edmonton area. In 2006, we received 479 calls to our phone line and placed 42 animals, bringing our total number of rescued animals to date (since 1999) to 417. However, there are still many more animals that need foster and permanent homes.

ERAS
Bandit is a very popular name for us ferrets and since I was the 4th Bandit to arrive at the AFS this year I was dubbed Jelly Belly by my foster mom. Since being in foster care the “Belly” part of “Jelly” has disappeared and now I just go by Jelly. I am a year old but before I arrived at the AFS I had never seen the outside of a cage except through the coloured plastic of a large exercise ball. Ferrets have boundless energy and a physical need to check out everything around them, so because I wasn’t being allowed to work off all that energy I started biting. In my foster home I have free roam 24/7 and my biting has already improved significantly. My foster mom expects that in my “forever” home I will bond with the humans there and stop altogether but I will likely always be a little bitey with strangers.
Our names are Snickers and Loki and we are both long, lean and very much bonded to each other. My name is Loki and I enjoy dips in the water bowl on occasion and will happily stick my entire head under water just to see what I can see! Snickers is into leather and will confiscate and hide anything falling within that category. Both of us boys love to play chase which is even more fun if you join in. Sometimes I even like to actually sneak up and give you a tiny little nip on the foot just to get you to join in the game! We are both used to being around dogs, cats and other ferrets and are only 1.5 years old.
Alberta Ferret Society (AFS)
Hi my name is Buddy and I am a recovering addict! I am 1yr old and addicted to chewing on all things rubber! The AFS people say this is why my tummy always hurts so much and why I kept throwing up. I guess that is also why my previous owners gave me up....they said I cost too much cause they kept having to take me to the vets to have the stuff I ate taken out. The AFS says that I am a very sweet and gentle boy though, and that if my new home keeps those yummy rubbery things out of reach and gives me lots of play time and lovings I won’t be as tempted to eat things that are bad for me. (Note: Buddy has had four blockages in under 1 year).
Aren’t I a handsome fellow? I came to the ERAS Rescue under false pretenses - the person who surrendered me said I was a classroom pet, but when the school was contacted to find out more about me, they told my rescuers that they had never had an iguana! My condition has really improved since coming here, and now I’m eating really well and working on getting potty trained (but I’m not quite there yet!). I’m probably full grown or close to it, and I love to hang out with people! I would love to find a permanent home where I could spend lots of time with my new family! pet rescue magazine
