Cover Model: My name is Zeff and I am a 2yr old, quirky, Border Collie/Aust. Shep X. I have never had so much attention but I sure like it! I am house trained, excellent with dogs, smart as a whip and love routine. I ride well in a truck, adore children and I’m OK with cats indoors. Lap It Up!

Hello Alberta! With summer starting to wind up and the kids going back to school soon, we all seem to be scrambling to get as much summer fun in as possible! People or pets, it is easy to be swept away and forget about those in need. August 16th is National Homeless Animal Day (International Society for Animal Rights). With this in mind, the PRM Team has been discussing the plight of the many companion animals in our province that still have no home, family, food or shelter. So many are euthanized through no fault of their own. Please keep all of these animals in your thoughts this month and appreciate your pet. Rescue or otherwise, they are all of great value and can not take care of themselves...they trust and count on us to give them the best care possible. And, as always, please promote spaying and neutering; if we all act responsibly we really can change lives together! The Pet Rescue Team We really appreciate your comments and feedback. Please feel free to email us directly at rescuemag@shaw.ca

Thousands of years ago, we humans formed a covenant with our companion animals. We wanted them to live with us and to share our lives. Because of this our ‘pets’ lost most of their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became our responsibility to feed and care for them. While the animals have kept their end of the bargain, we humans largely have not. ~ Unknown

have liked to have known a little more about the animal’s lives at the end of their treatments, and while it is explored in the most serious cases, the other stories left me wanting more. The book also ends somewhat abruptly, however it ties in with the title My Teachers Wear Fur Coats appropriately.

Tail of the Month

Rachel Sentes Book Review

Rating:

My Teachers Wear Fur Coats by Susan Mack and Natalia Krawetz The debate on the practice of Reikia form of hands on or distance energy treatment for humans and pets shall probably rage on forever, with the two camps of believers and non-believers arguing over the concept. It’s rare to find middle ground with this holistic theory. Roughly translated, Reiki means “Universal Life Force Energy” and its practitioners align the recipient to receive healing energy from the hands of a Master. This can be done either by a hands-on approach or by projecting the power psychically with a picture or mental connection. I won’t get into the particulars of the procedure here, as this is a book review, however this theory is the focus of the book, so those who have difficulty with this new age concept should probably skip this one. The book examines the human-animal bond through the eyes of an independent Reiki Master working with animals that were in need of pain management, de-stressors and general behavioural help. Reiki in this role plays one element in the solution to the problems. Throughout the book ample acknowledgement of the role of traditional and holistic veterinarians is encouraged, as well as the role of the animal’s caregivers. The author works with a variety of animals, and informs the reader on how each individual application of Reiki was applied, as well as the life lessons gained from the interactions with the pets. The author chooses to focus the majority of the book on the treatment of cats- a comfort zone for her, and rightly so since comments like: “Tail-wagging- see that on a dog and you know he is friendly” treads in a dangerous zone of generalization. As any certified behaviorist will tell you tail wagging can also represent nervous and uncertain emotions which can lead to biting in some cases. One should never assume that a wagging tail means come and say hi. That aside, the writing is clear and easy to read, frank and informative, and the stories are told without any pulling any punches. It could benefit from a little more levity, as the text is somewhat dry. I would 4

Ultimately, this book gives a good breakdown of the practice of Reiki and provides tips for reading sources, how to become a Master, and how to start your own business. For those wishing to learn about Reiki and pets it provides a good read.

Edmonton Reptile & Amphibian Society (ERAS) My name is Stumpy and I am a handsome green Iguana with a unique, stumpy tail! I was adopted, but when given full run of the basement in my new home I started becoming aggressive within a week and a half. Since then I have returned to ERAS and have been given my own territory (my cage) back and I am as calm as ever. I am content to be in my own space and do not require a very large enclosure. We now have at least 15 Iguanas in our care that need permanent homes. Please, if you are serious about providing one of them with care and love we’d be happy to hear from you. They think I am around 2-3 years old. I am a dark Boa Constrictor that was brought to ERAS through animal control. I was found in a casino parking lot downtown. I am a common Corn snake and I came from animal control. We don’t know too much about me but they think I am a male possibly around 1.5yrs old.

My name is Apatchie and I’m new around here so I’m just getting used to this attention thing…it’s great!!! I came in with my sister and we are terribly thin but working hard on gaining weight (eating is good fun for us too!). We are just 6 months old and were found wandering the country roads. Buzzzzz Buzzzzz Buzzzzz Just little ole me buzzing around looking for a home… guess it’s better than wondering why no one has come for me yet! I am a Shep X and everyone adores me. I have the craziest ears that look like propellers…maybe that’s how I got the name Buzz! I want nothing more than to make you happy and I am so well behaved. I am a little shy at first but that does not last long. I love going for quad rides or just watching my foster mom work in the yard. I can’t wait to find the lucky people that will love me forever.

I’m Sabre! Like most from SCARS, I’m originally from a northern AB pound. I am likely a Collie X and love to play with toys. I have been great with other dogs and listen very well…except when play time is over and I pretend I can’t hear you. It’s soooo funny to stay at arm’s length from my foster mom when my quading time is over…for me anyways! I am crate trained and can’t wait to meet you! Hi, my name is Sophie and I wandered on to someone’s farm and just never left. I am older, VERY well fed, pretty quiet and an incredibly lovable girl. Other dogs and cats don’t seem to interest me; all I really want is to follow you around. If you are looking for the sweetest girl EVER, just give me a call. I am going into get groomed this week to get rid of mats so soon you will be able to see how beautiful I am!

My name is Molly and I am about 12 weeks old. I was rescued with my brothers and sisters but none are as cute as me! My foster Mom promises me I’ll soon have my own family. Could you box me up and take me home? Call 466-SCAR to learn more about me.

Beagle Paws Rescue My name is Sadie and I’m a sweet, 8yr old, senior Beagle looking for the perfect forever home. Many dog lovers prefer us seniors because we’re so easy! I’m very sweet, calm, good natured, love attention and I’m good with dogs and kids. Like many senior humans I’m a little “thick” around the middle but it’s nothing that a little exercise can’t fix…maybe we can walk together?

This is me, Jack. I’m a very handsome 4yr old Beagle boy. I’m very smart; I know how to sit, shake a paw, catch and retrieve a ball. I’m also friendly and good natured. I would like to go to live with a family where I wouldn’t be left alone very much as I get scared no one will come back for me. I get really sad when I think about it and cry very loudly when I’m by myself. Would you like to have a special little boy like me be your forever dog?

Hi! My name is Copper the Beagle. I’m a professional bed warmer and need to find a job before the cold winter months hit. I have a little too much ‘insulation’, so I’ve learned to enjoy a quick walk between naps and I’m working on slimming down a tad. I would love to find a home with older children with cold feet. At 4yrs old I’m perfectly house trained and always sit on command (especially for a cookie – low cal of course). I’m good with the cats and other dogs, but I really like my people and would appreciate a home where I’m not left alone for long periods of time.

Thank You to the Siebert Family for sponsoring my spot My name is Fritz and I’m a 6yr old, Mastiff/ Lab X. I was found running down the highway. I’m a big, strong dog with a friendly, but dominant, personality. Known as a lady’s man (or rather dog!), most female dogs find me irresistible. I get along well with people, including the 10 year old girl in my foster home, but don’t expect me to get along with bossy male dogs or cats. To learn more about me call SNAP 780-968-0025

Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) My name is Annabelle and I am about 2yrs old. I am a pound rescue and have been with SNAP since November. I’m desperate to find my very own home. I can be very affectionate, but I’m still having issues with fitting in. With a patient family and a little time to settle in I’m sure I will be back to my sweet self again soon! I’m not sure why I have been with SNAP for so long (over a year now). I’m a handsome little guy around 1.5yrs old and currently in foster care. I am comfortable around other cats and dogs but would do best in a home without children as I am a bit timid at first. I’m sweeter than honey, please come meet me today! My name is Dewey and I’m about 1.5yrs old. I have been with SNAP nearly a year now and although very timid and shy I love human company. I roll and purr at the slightest touch and can hardly wait to get my fair share of attention in my new home. I’m a smaller cat with a beautiful soft and thin coat. Hopefully my new family will come for me soon and take me to a quiet, mature, home where I can relax and let my true personality shine. I’m a 1yr old sweetheart who came from the pound almost a year ago as a kitten. I can’t understand why no one has ever picked me…WOW talk about making a girl feel rejected!!! I am a bit timid and very quiet in nature, but very affectionate once I warm up to you. I get along with other cats, but I would do best in a home without small children. Please make me part of your family today.... I’ve been waiting so patiently to meet you.

I’m about 9 months old and came to SNAP with my mom and brother when I was a tiny kitten. Though we’re fine with other cats, we’re all very timid and fearful of people due to our rough start in life. I still like to be close to my family as I was taught there’s safety in numbers. A quiet home with a patient person willing to spend time helping me with my social skills would be great, but one that would adopt both my brother and I would be even better! Everyone calls me Max. I’m a 5yr old, large, boy with a curious and inquisitive nature. I will provide MAXimum love to anyone who takes me into their heart and gives me a home. I was surrendered by a local veterinarian, so not much is known about me. I’m very playful for my age and can’t wait to go home with my very own family. I’ve been with SNAP since last November.

They call me Toots! I’m a 1yr old, playful and independent kitten. I love the company of people and get along well with other felines. If you would like to meet me, please call the number below ASAP! I’ve been with SNAP since last fall and I’m really anxious to find my forever home. They call me Tux because of my striking black and white suit. I’m 1yr old, but because I’m a pound rescue, not much else is known about me yet. I’m a large, energetic cat who is very playful and I’ve been with SNAP since December 2007. I can’t wait to have my own house to romp around in.

Hi there, my name is Sammy and I’m 1.5yrs old. I’m a pound rescue and although I’m grateful for the warm space and food, I can’t wait to have a family. I’m very timid, soft spoken and would do best in a quiet home. I’ve been with SNAP since Christmas…please call to meet me soon I want to come home!!! I’m Smokey, a 2yr old pound rescue. I have a silky coat and the most soft, loving eyes that are sure to win you over. I’m quiet, laid back and affectionate. I’ve been with SNAP over 7 months now and I’m dying to meet you so please don’t wait any longer, I can’t wait to be in your arms!

get grooming Canine Lice Rachelle Reichart Little Arf’n’ Annie Dog Grooming Contributing Writer

N

ow before you panic, dog lice do not like to infest humans. Canine lice can either be sucking lice or biting lice. Either one have powerful claws that allow them to cling strongly to the hair shaft of your pet. They are a light brown color and round with 6 legs. They move straight from dog to dog with direct contact. Lice cannot jump like fleas and they are more species specific. Unlike fleas, lice live out their entire life cycle on the animal. The adult lice lay eggs (the eggs are white in color), gluing them tightly to the hair shafts. The eggs then hatch and the nymphs grow into adults and start the cycle all over again. This entire process takes 2-4 weeks. Lice causes the animal discomfort and the animal will bite and scratch causing red, sore skin. Lice control:

1. Talk to your vet about the best treatment. Spot treatments like Revolution or Advantage work and repeated monthly treatments are required to kill them as the lice hatch. 2. You can choose to use lice shampoos and bath your dog in them approximately every week for at least three weeks but you need to take care that everything gets cleaned and sprayed every time as well. This shampoo can be very harsh on your dog’s skin so speaking with your vet will ensure that it is safe for your pet. 3. Hot water wash everything the dog comes in contact with. Always follow through with all the treatments your vet suggests and keep the animal away from others. 4. After everything is clean you can spray the premises using a product from your vet or pet store. Take caution to follow all instructions on the bottle because it may not be safe around cats or children. Contacting your vet is a must to make sure it is safe to use these products in your household. 5. If your dog is in heavy contact with other dogs such as daycare, off-leash parks or kennels, ask your vet about lice preventative maintenance.

Safe Haven Animal Rescue Edmonton Society (SHARES) Ranger Danger here...just joking I’m as sweet as they come! I am about 4 months old and losing teeth. I am good in the car, love to be near people and always ready for fun. So far potty and crate training are going pretty well. I also know how to sit, lie down and give people a high 5! I love to sleep under the bed but occasionally I will sneak up during the night. Howdy! My name is Walker...as in Walker Texas Ranger! I’m a swell guy, just as sweet as potato pie! I love to be around people, dogs, and even cats. I’m all smiles and wags...not to mention my irresistible brown eyes! I am shy around new people, but after a few days I warm right up. I am a 2yr old Hound X and can hardly wait for my new family to find me. If you’re a Lone Ranger, looking for a partner, give me a call! My name is Louie and I am a 2.5yr old, large, Doberman with a very loving and gentle disposition. I’m good in the house... no destruction or accidents, whatever those are??? I don’t jump the baby gates or fence and I play very well with my canine sisters (two large and one small). I am well behaved in the car and don’t sleep on beds or couches. I don’t play with anything that are not in my toy boxes -unless my foster mom leaves her socks on the floor...kind of fair game then don’t ya think? I love chewing nylon bones and rope toys, playing with tennis balls, and especially carrying around my A&W Root Bear puppet...I’m such a sweet boy! I just came from the pound (a victim of a bad haircut!) and they now call me Tucker. I have personality plus and I’m good on leash...but do not take me off leash as my recall is leaving a lot to be desired. I have zero street sense too. I am good with other dogs and in general just a pretty laid back little man. I also seem to be potty trained already!

Paws and Claws Feature Group

Animal Rescue Foundation

We are a non-profit organization that has been rescuing and feeding abandoned, abused/neglected, or surrendered dogs and cats for six years. Over a thousand unwanted pets have been rescued and placed into loving homes. Foster families in Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Eckville & Edmonton take in needy dogs, puppies, cats and kittens and provide loving care until a suitable home is found. Paws and Claws strives to develop a safe, loving, healthy, family environment for dogs and cats that live on two of the First Nation Communities in Central Alberta. Very few animals in this area are spayed and neutered, and the only thing that checks the animal population are deaths due to predation, harsh winters, starvation, diseases and parasitic infestations. Paws and Claws Animal Rescue Foundation volunteers are dedicated to changing this situation. In August of 2006 Paws and Claws established their Spay & Neuter program. Weekly trips are made to these remote areas to pick up female dogs and cats (averaging two a week) to be spayed, free of charge, for residents on these First Nations Communities. Spaying these female dogs quickly translates into hundreds of thousands of fewer unwanted dogs in Alberta. We do not receive government funding. Funds are raised through raffles, bottle drives, etc., and we rely heavily on community and corporate support. All of our fundraising efforts go towards altering animals.

My name is Raja! A kind woman, on a First Nations Community, who often finds puppies like us at the dump, gave me to a volunteer. She already had too many rescued dogs. I am a sweet, friendly little fellow who likes children. I was pretty impressed (thrilled actually!) to have a soft bed and a bowl full of food! They figure I am a Husky X around 12 weeks old. Can I have a kiss please?

They call us The Blues Brothers and say we are about 10 weeks old. My name is Dizzy and these are my two brothers Chico and Muddy. Our mother, Chewy, is a large dog, but Papa is a mystery. We are a friendly trio looking for our forever homes. Dizzy

Reading to Rover

Paws for a Story

Rachel Sentes Contributing Writer

W

alking into the Riverbend Library one can see the excitement of the staff when asking about the Paws for a Story program, presented by the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta. Many staff members book their work schedules around the dog’s visits so that they can partake in the fun with the animals and children. Initially a pilot program for the Board of Education, the program brings animals and children together in a safe, positive environment to encourage reading skills and foster a love of books and pets. Betty Klenholz and Louise Lindsay both former librarians, are the Pet Therapy Society volunteers who run the program with the library staff. “The library version of the program is just for fun, there is no evaluation, and children who don’t have any reading issues get into the fun part of it. They pet and snuggle and talk to the animals. But if you have a child who is a reluctant reader for whatever reason at school, their reaction is that they really like reading to the dog, because ‘he doesn’t laugh when I make a mistake.’ And that is important to carry on into the school system,” explains Klenholz. The dog’s owners are part of the team, and are excellent when dealing with children that may have chosen something to read that they are struggling with. “ If the book is difficult to understand, the owner can say ‘you know, Piper didn’t seem to understand that very much, could you say it over again, or could you explain what the word meant?’ and the child will do it willingly because they want to please the dog. The direction given is incredibly relaxed and the children simply forget that they are reading aloud, “says Lindsay.

local stories...local people...local pets

Each child that wants to read to a dog has their choice of what dog they want to spend time with, and no one has gone away disappointed. Every dog also has their own style to approaching Paws for a Story. Some wag their tails when they hear the words, others watch the pages turn, some sit and pant with a happy smile on their face, or put a reassuring paw on a leg. Still others turn over on their tummies for a rub. Some are in tune with a child’s frustration at sounding out difficult wordseven getting up and being silly to draw away the child’s attention and relax them before continuing on. It’s amazing to witness how the companionship of these dogs can affect a child’s self-confidence. The program at the Riverbend library has been running for almost 5 years with over 450 children taking part, and hundreds of regulars. Some children are a little unsure when they first arrive, but after a little encouragement they settle in and then don’t want to leave. The unconditional welcome is what keeps them there, and an instant trust is established that would take much longer if it was just a person reading with them. Currently there are about 20 teams of owners and dogsmixed, rescues, and purebreds, (and one cat) who visit various library locations and Betty and Louise would like to see the program serve the population in all branches of the library system, especially for those that don’t have access to animals as readily. Since the project was initially piloted in schools, they would love for it to really take off in the school system and in special classroom settings. They have no doubt the next few years will show great growth for the programs and for new volunteers. If you would like more information about becoming involved in the Paws for a Story program whether as a volunteer or as a facility, please visit the Pet Therapy Society website at www.pettherapysociety.com. rags to riches We can tell you this...no matter WHAT your favorite breed, they are living on chains somewhere. When you snuggle up with your best friend at night, think of those that are sleeping outside, alone, hungry, thirsty, cold, and with nowhere to go but the end of a chain.

Chester’s life before his rescue

Chester had caught the eye of one of Second Chance Animal Rescue Society’s volunteers. He was a good dog but his life existed on the end of a chain. His previous owner had no use for Chester, or regard for his quality of life. The bedding was provided by SCARS to make Chester’s life a little more bearable until they could bring him into care. Fortunately for Chester, the time came and this is the letter SCARS received after he went to his new adoptive home: Dear Sylvia: Everyday we learn something new about Chester. He has changed and opened up so much. I remember when we met him in the IKEA parking lot. I just knew he was the dog for us. He was so gentle when Katrina gave him the dog treat. When we got Chester, I remember he was at that point of shedding where his fur needed some real good brushing.

My husband didn’t really want a dog at the time but he knew that it had become a losing battle. My children and I were ready. I knew we needed Chester to look his best. So on the way home we took Chester to a dog wash and groomed him all up. We were really not prepared for this experience, after all we did not bring towels or anything. Chester took it well. He hated the spraying and washing but not once did he growl or nip. He did wiggle and squirm a lot though. Once he was all shiny we loaded him back into the van and brought him home. My husband got home a couple of hours later. We always laugh and say that Cliff doesn’t have an overabundance of soft feelers. He comes from a farm background where dogs have a purpose. Well when he saw Chester he couldn’t help but smile with approval.

August 2008

Chester instantly won him over with those beautiful eyes. When we went to take him home, you mentioned you were surprised that he got into the van so easily. Well, now he is Continued page 11

trained to get into the back of the van or the truck and he loves it. I can’t go anywhere without him. No way could we get him into the small pool for a swim or a bath. Today, he not only got into the pool but he even laid down and rolled around in it. We have learned that when we are not home he is an excellent guard dog, yet he is so gentle with children. He is awesome with the kids. Katrina (4) just loves him. He doesn’t jump on her and he loves to be loved and petted. It’s a match made in heaven. My older daughter Laura (9) is his main care taker. She feeds him, grooms him and takes him for a daily bike ride on top of the walks and other things he does with the rest of the family. She is also taking him to dog obedience. He is doing wonderful. Of course we have a leg up since he was already partially trained when we got him thanks to your fostercare. We’re hoping that we can put him into agility training. We can not understand why someone would have kept him on the end of a chain but we are thankful that he found his way to us because he is an absolute wonderful dog and we couldn’t be happier. Thank you for taking the time to rescue these dogs and thank you to the volunteers who take the time to help you. All the best, Della, Laura, Cody, Katrina & Clifford Chester’s story is only one of many successful outcomes. There are many more due to the efforts of rescue workers and volunteers across Alberta. However, this work does not come without a cost both financially and emotionally. There is an endless supply of companion animals in our own surrounding communities that need the help of rescue groups such as the ones seen in this magazine. If you are looking for a companion animal to enhance your life then please think of these rescue organizations and their animals first. Thank you to Della, who took the time to write SCARS and allowed us to use her letter to show that there is a better life waiting for those that are abandoned and unloved.

Hello, my name is Sullivan and everyone tells me how gentle and sweet I am! I have a cheery personality and love getting brushed. I am approximately 1-2yrs old. My previous owners moved and abandoned me locked in a bathroom without food or water for a week. Fortunately a NASAP volunteer found me and the rest of my previous life is history! I like dogs, cats, children...just about everyone! Hi there, my name is Fluffy and I am a Norwegian Forest Cat X. I love attention and start to purr the minute anyone comes near me! I also love to have my fur brushed; this helps me to prevent mats. I am a very easy going cat that would adore the peacefulness of a quiet home, preferably without children or dogs. I am 10yrs old and in perfect health. I’m Marley, a 4yr old, dapper, little tabby. I’m a happy, lively, loving, and very gentle kitty that enjoys laying on the back of the sofa behind your head. I like to stretch out my paws to let you know I’m there so you can reach up and pat me. I adore being held close and cuddled. Did I tell you I’m good with other cats too?

They call me Bogey around here. I was rescued from the trunk of a car before I could be used for target practice. I don’t know what would have happened to me if that nice girl was not there to rescue me. I am 4yrs old and get along with dogs, other cats and children just fine! I am also incredibly good-looking despite having some hair shaved because of bad mats. Oh yes, I should also mention I have a stub for a tail because I am a Manx! I’m litter trained and get along well with other cats, dogs and children. Hi, my name is Frosty! I came from the pound and I am about 5yrs old. I am a beautiful American Eskimo who could use a brush and a bath…just wait until those groomers get their hands on me! I don’t mind the company of other dogs and I am friendly and easy going. I weigh around 32lbs and I am very handsome if I do say so myself! My name is Tequila and I am a 9 month old German Shep/Border Collie X. I am extremely energetic, very smart and until now I have always lived as an outside dog. I like being able to come indoors though and my foster mom is surprised how well behaved I am in the house. I am not dominant and love to play with other dogs. I am good with children and have been raised with a four year old child, but I may knock them over when I get excited! If you are up for a lively dog and willing to keep up my training please call and ask for TEQUILA! Hi my name is Jersey and I am a 9 month old Border Collie X. I am a tall girl and weigh in around 58lbs. I am trying to learn to curb my enthusiasm when meeting new people but I just get SOOO excited! I am crate trained, get along with other dogs, love to play and I always come when called at the park. I enjoy being outside, don’t make a fuss to come in, or bark excessively. If you have an active home and think I might do for you - don’t delay, call NASAP now!

My name is Lois. I am so tired in this picture, it was taken just after I was rescued with my five puppies. My puppies are now in their very own homes and I am settling into my new foster home. I am a friendly, petite, girl around 18 months old. I only weigh about 15lbs right now but I’m pretty skinny and still need to fatten up a little. I just love being pampered and made a fuss of! Maggie here! I am 18 months old and the sweetest dog my foster mom has had in a long time! That’s pretty special coming from her. I am good with everything - dogs, cats, kids and horses. I am also housetrained and my recall is wonderful. When you come to meet me I will “smile” at you so you can see all my pearly white teeth!

Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart) My name is Monte and I may only be 4 months old but I am pretty smart! During our last cold snap I was determined to find someone to help me so I wandered and wandered until a nice lady rescued me. Being a Lab X, I LOVE to walk and walk and walk…and love and love and love! I adore spending time with my humans and never wander far away. I also get along with other dogs and even cats -although I don’t quite understand them! Hi! My name is Sophie and I am a Collie X. I am just about ready to celebrate my first birthday and I already have my birthday wish – to get my front paw fixed! When I was rescued I was recovering from “road rash” and a broken front paw…I also had previously broken my other leg so I walk a little differently right now. Despite my injuries I still enjoy running around, and I also love going on car rides and getting cuddles from everyone I meet!

Parkland Animal K-9 Society (PAKS) My name is Bruno and I am living proof that drugs affect more than just the person doing them. I came from an owner who had a great life but sadly got hooked on drugs. I was locked in a garage with no food or water, living in my own waste. One day a family member asked about me and let me out of the garage. He became my friend, brought me food and water, and called PAKS to help me get a better life. To hear more about me please visit the website listed below. Drugs affect everyone, so think twice about the choices you make and always remember those who are dependant on you! Yes, I know I have been here a long time. Why you ask? Well nothing wrong with me, it’s just my foster mom taking her time to make sure that I get the best home ever! My name is Toby and I am a great guy with the best temperament you will ever find in a large boy like me. I am 1yr old and love toys, dogs, cats, kids -you name it I love everything. Hi Tallula here (Lulu for short!) I am what you call the original shy girl. I am a 3yr old purebred Chihuahua. I am an absolute sweetheart, but despite my famous counterpart the Taco Bell Dog, I am super shy and will need to go to a quiet, female only, home. I want a new mom really bad but men really scare me. I love to follow my foster mom around and have no issues with the other family dogs. I could see myself in a home with an older lady who would appreciate a best girlfriend to chat with. I am new around here…everyone has been calling me Sampson. After weeks of searching, with no success, for my owners, I am now officially a PAKS member. I am a young Husky X with a great personality. I am great with other dogs, even my foster mom’s scary old male dog. I hear he runs the place, but personally I think it is just an act! An active home that will keep me forever and forever would be super duper for me.

Fort McMurray SPCA Are you looking for a big fluffy cuddle bug? If you are, then I’m your man, my name is Cadotte. I am housetrained and know a ton of tricks such as sit, shake a paw, high five, and lay down. I love it when you brush my puffy soft fur and will give you a “kiss” by touching my nose to yours. I love going for walks and always walk around puddles, never through them. I do need to be an only pet, mainly because I want and need all of your love! Did I mention that I was housetrained? BONUS!!! Hey everybody, I’m a super dog named Shyla. Well that’s what my bandanna is telling me anyway. I’m a great with kids and love to play fetch and run. I’m already housetrained so you don’t have to worry about all that yucky stuff either. All I ask for is that you feed me, take me for walks, love me and have a nice big bed waiting for me at home…I don’t mind sharing if you’ll have me! I’m a big goofball named Storm who loves to play fetch. Every time I see you I will grab my ball and wiggle my bum with anticipation for you to play with me. My second favorite thing to do is swim, I love hanging out by the pool and laying down in the water to cool off. I am housetrained and great with people but can become a little protective. In a perfect world my new home would not have other pets and have a fenced yard with tons of room for me to play. Theo is my name and searching high and low for a home is my game! I get along with other cats and love people…so why am I still here? I am starting to get a bit lazy at the shelter and packing on a bit of weight. I am looking for a home willing to help me get back into shape so I can look and feel my best! Have a little pity for this big kitty and come by to meet me soon! My name is Snowball and I am an awesome kitty with a great personality. I love treats and get along well with other cats. I have been here way too long and none of the two-leggers can figure out why. I promise to be good….come on people, this lonely little boy needs a home!!!

Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS), is a nonprofit, volunteer operated, rescue group based in High Prairie. PARS is made up of a dedicated group of foster homes. The children are the ones that get bowled over, jumped on, wet tail sprayed, and have their schedules shuffled around dog chores… we wanted to know what they think!

Kids On Fostering

What do think of fostering for PARS? It’s fun because I get to play with puppies and kittens. Three of our dogs, and one of our cats were foster pets that we adopted and they are the best pets ever. - Beau Lewis, age 11 What do you think of PARS’s adoption program? I think it’s a good idea because it helps lots of dogs and cats get a home instead of just getting euthanized. - Billy McCue, age 14 What do you think of all the dogs you look after? I like Dell the best cos he kisses, and I like all the puppies. -Kristopher Oulette, age 3 Where do all the foster puppies come from? From all the people that don’t like dogs I guess. -Hannah Cottingham, age 7 From a mountain -Abby Cottingham, age 4 What do you like best about fostering? Quad riding the dogs -Colby MacLean, age 7 Why do you think we have so many foster pets? Cause people don’t spay or neuter. -Colby MacLean, age 7 Do you like it when the puppies are out? No, puppies jump on me. -Laila MacLean, age 3 Do you like it when we foster kitties, and why? Yes, I pick up kitties, and love them. (The kitties do not always appreciate this) -Laila MacLean, age 3 Why do you like your cat? Cause I yike (like) his tail. -Laila MacLean, age 3 Why do people bring dogs and cats to PARS? Because I yike (like) cats, and I want them... -Laila MacLean, age 3 Why do you think there needs to be Prairie animal rescue? Cause dogs are really important too and not many of them would live if they didn’t come here. -Riane MacLean, age 9 What do you think when we get a dog back from an adoption? I think it is sad because people should try harder to keep them because more dogs keep coming in. -Riane MacLean, age 9 What do you think people should look for in adopting a pet? They should ask my mom what type of yard they have and what type of active dog they are looking for, and they should go with what the dog acts like not what the dog looks like, I like Elvis cause he’s big and black and really nice, no one ever picks him. -Riane MacLean, age 9 How many dogs do you want to have? sixteen! -Kennedy Oulette, age 5 Why do we fix puppies? Because we don’t want them to have baby puppies. -Kennedy Oulette, age 5 Fostering is a remarkable family project and ensures everyone works together as a team. Most children find volunteering very rewarding; they are anxious to help and truly amazed to see they can make a difference. The kids of PARS learn many valuable lessons and gain priceless experience through fostering that will serve them through-out their lives. Not only will they be responsible pet owners, but they will continue to feel empathy, take on responsibility and always have respect for people and animals. They have felt compassion, learned patience, sacrificed freely, experienced loss and have been taught not to judge on what a dog looks like, but how it acts. Most importantly they have learned they can make a difference too. 14

I am Buster…the biggest suck around -but don’t tell anybody because you’ll ruin my tough guy rep! I am a 7yr old Rotti X. My former owners treated me well but they wouldn’t get me neutered and I would escape and run the neighbourhood looking for the female in heat nearby... I got in trouble and here I am! I like my daily romps in the park, love cookies, and I love riding in the car – three of my favorite things. If you like big sloppy kisses I am your boy! They call me Mister! I was pretty nervous when I came in because most of the dogs are bigger than me but I am getting better. I love kids that treat me gently – in fact I am falling in love with one of the dog walkers here! They don’t know what breed I am, they are torn between Corgi (I have big beautiful ears), American Eskimo (I am white and fuzzy), and the rest is just a guess. I love my daily walks to the creek; I really like to romp around in the water to cool down. I am Bandit and I am whopping113lbs of love! Pound for pound I must be the best deal around! I love everyone and everything (except going into my kennel). Because of my heavy coat I would make a good outside dog but I still need company and would love to come in occasionally to spend time with you! My name is Burma and I am a 12 week old, Blue Heeler X. I am the nicest little girl and as sweet as they come. I am also full of energy with a hint of mischief in my eyes!

I am a 1yr old, neutered, Husky X named Rusty. I love people of all kinds, young and old, short or tall…I like them all! When I was young my owners left me out in the yard for a week at a time unattended, I was very lonely and sad so I misbehaved but now I get lots of attention. I’m learning my manners and I will do anything for a treat! I really want to go to my new forever home soon.

y name is Lilly and I am the luckiest dog alive! My story is sad but I am optimistic it will have a happy ending---or perhaps I should say---- beginning! I came to SCARS with a horrendous gaping neck wound full of infection and maggots. Someone shot me several times, even though I’m sure I didn’t do anything wrong. I have undergone extensive surgeries requiring ongoing convalescence. For the first few weeks I required daily visits going between the vet clinic and the emergency clinic for intravenous pain control and fluids. I was in pretty rough shape. Now I go every second day to change bandages and monitor my wound. I have undergone four surgeries. My wound is improving but it is still a long way from healing. The vet thinks I could be up to 10yrs old…I am going to need some dental work when I am well enough, but not to worry about that now. I also have a big mass in my throat, sadly the specialist said it was caused by some trauma that cut off the blood supply to my epiglottis---but we won’t worry about that now either. I have damage to my left eye…again caused by more trauma, not a defect. I don’t see too well from that eye and I keep knocking over my water bowl but my foster mom says we will worry about that as soon as my neck is cleared up too. Through all of this my foster mom and dad say I am a dream, and although an emotional roller coaster ride they say I am worth every possible effort. They love it when I wag my tail. I am still pretty stiff when I walk, but some days it feels so good to be alive that I can’t resist rolling around in the grass. I used to weigh 16kg but now with regular meals I weigh 19.6kg and still counting. I always come when called, travel well in the car and have good house manners. I love treats, any kind of treats!

My life has changed dramatically in the last two months. I thought nobody in the world cared about me but now I know there are a lot of kind people in the world who want me to experience all the good things in life that I deserve. My foster parents have a wish for me: that I will get strong and healthy, be loved and cared for forever, have good food in my belly, fresh clean water to drink, a nice warm place to sleep in peace and safety, warm sun on my back, cool swims in the river on hot days, the will to chase the odd rabbit or two and a tail that never stops wagging! SCARS is committed to making this wish come true for me. Thank you to everyone that sent kind thoughts, good wishes and contributions towards my enormous vet bills. Without your support I would have died a lonely and painful death never knowing a soft and loving touch. I am very grateful for my second chance! For the sake of all the animals out there who have not been found, who are suffering, lost and lonely, I vow to get healthy and live the best life possible, for all of us! With loads of gratitude and lots of love,

Lilly
