Finally some real summer temperatures! We all want to get out there and share this great weather with our loved ones but please leave your pet at home unless you can transport them comfortably and you are heading to a pet friendly location. It is no secret that our pets need fresh water and access to cool shade in the summer months. However, each year many pets (and children) are subject to extreme heat temperatures when they are left unattended in vehicles. It can take less than 5 minutes for the temperature to become harmful to a pet in a parked vehicle. Respiratory distress is just the beginning, after the brain starts being denied oxygen permanent damage can occur and eventually death. Each pet is different, but none can stand extreme oven-like heat. Dogs & cats for instance start with not only a heavy fur coat but also with a body temperature several degrees higher than our own. Smaller bodies can also warm up quicker and many pets are unable to sweat as we do to help regulate their body temperatures. If you think your pet is suffering from the heat get veterinary attention as soon as possible. Or, if you see an animal or child in distress and unattended in a vehicle please do not hesitate to investigate further, their safety may depend on you. Be safe and take care! THE PRM Team Please visit the United Animal Nations website at www.uan.org to download (or order) fliers, that you can leave on other’s cars to raise awareness and kindly let them know the hazards of bringing their pet along for the ride.

Tail of the Month

Rachel Sentes Book Review

Dogged Pursuit – My year of Competing Dusty, the World’s Least Likely Agility Dog by Robert Rodi

To many, Agility is a dog sport that looks really fun and easy. It is fun, but it’s not always easy as the author Robert Rodi now knows. The book Dogged Pursuit exposes the culture of Agility which isn’t always pretty and gives the reader a sneak peek at what they might encounter if they choose to enter the world of competitive dog sports. Despite this book’s subtitle, I found that it doesn’t focus so much on his new dog Dusty, as it did on the authors’ quest for greatness with a dog that’s about average in skill. His unrealistic quest forces him to come to terms with the odd world of agility, complete with the greasy vendor food, unique fashion statements, and the politics and scandal that complete the sport. The story Rodi weaves is funny, endearing, and sentimental. From the opening chapter titled Tragically Hip which talks about his good agility dog Carmen being sidelined due to health issues, you will enjoy the easy language of this book. You are right along on the road to greatness with Robert and feel his trepidation when meeting his new dog Dusty a rescue dog who just needs someone to care about him. Robert and Dusty work well together, but seem to have different agility goals and this makes for a great read. If you currently compete in the sport of agility, this book will have you nodding your head in agreement with the description of tournaments and the training process. If you have had an interest in the sport, but wasn’t sure what you would be in for, this book also serves as an informative guide to the training and competitive nature of the sport. This is a great book worth picking up and it encourages everyone to consider adopting a rescue dog. Dogged Pursuit is available at your local bookstore.

Beagle Paws Rescue Hello, do you remember me? My name is Shiloh and I’m still waiting for someone to take me home. True, I am a senior but that doesn’t mean that I won’t make a great companion. I’m a very good boy and don’t understand why noone wants me. I’m looking for a special forever family that can make me feel wanted and loved. If you have room in your home and heart for me please visit me at beaglepaws.com.

Wyatt here! I’m just off the plane from Newfoundland and in all my years (3 that is) I’ve never seen a more beautiful place than Alberta! I especially like living indoors with a loving family but I am eager to find a family of my own. If it helps, I’m crate trained, get along well with others and I have stunning golden eyes. Pick Me! Pick Me!

Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart) My name is Alfie (one of Delta’s pups) and I am a 6-7mth old Shepherd X. I am really affectionate and love to play with other dogs. I have a really neat coat because it is kind of long, but not all over. People say it gives me character -whatever that is. I am looking for a home with a canine buddy.

I was named after Delta Burke because of my striking eyes. I am a 4yr old, 40lb, Shepherd X who loves to spend time outside but my exercise requirements are low. My back leg was broken but has healed up fine. I absolutely love getting affection, in fact if you rub my head I just shut my eyes and enjoy.

33 kittens all aboard

Virginia Marando

Ok, so our feline friends and their babies are in serious trouble. We are still experiencing the “kitten explosion” and this year Humane Societies and especially Rescue Groups are finding it a strain to keep up with the demands of our feline population spurt. I’m still shaking my head at why some people don’t “get” the importance of spaying and neutering their cats, especially when they are left to roam free. Just recently I was involved with a large kitten rescue, and was fortunate to have had the assistance of the Calgary Humane Society. After placing a call to them, they offered placements for all 33 six to ten week old kittens. When I arrived at the location to pick the kittens up, the carriers were lined up one after another and I aptly named it the “CATtanooga Choo Choo.” I had a three hour drive to Calgary and those kittens sang all the way there! Calgary’s cooperation, and willingness to help out with this rescue has been phenomenal. I would like to say a personal thank you to Jeanetta Smallman, of the Calgary Humane Society, for facilitating the kitten’s care, and to the foster caregivers that opened up their homes to take in these little “hissy” creatures and nurture them into lovable little “fluff balls.” Calgary Humane Society’s resources do have limits, but the friendly attitude and eagerness to “push the envelope” for any animal in their care is commendable. I am happy to report that “my” kittens’ journey is well underway to them finding their life long homes.

still needs your help! Our community needs to see more cat adoptions and more foster caregivers. Pet Rescue Magazine has approached the subject of foster care over and over again, but I’m appealing to all those that love animals, not just your own, to help out even if it is temporary. Seek out an organization and ask about fostering on a part-time basis, or being an emergency placement home. It’s ok to call and discuss options with them. During the summer months care is especially required for young feral kittens, they need the “hands-on” socialization with us humans early in order for them to have a chance at life with a loving family. In the words of one rescue volunteer “A good start means the difference between life and death.” If you can foster call a group now, please there are lives depending on it.!

Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection (NASAP) I’m Bartholomew. I’m 2yrs old and a bit of a timid fellow at first but I warm up quickly. I’m extremely gentle, affectionate and love being brushed or having my tummy rubbed. I was found as a stray so I’m hoping for a stable permanent home. Hi, I’m Peanut! I’m really easy to get along with...unless you’re a cat! Give me a good scratching post and a few liver treats and you will be in my good books forever. I like all sorts of attention, from curling up on the couch to playing cat and mouse!

Good day, my name is Freckles. I’m a big friendly chap who is very sociable and loves to get attention. I’m 2yrs old and have a sweet disposition. In fact I’m addicted to snuggles! I get along very well with the dogs and cat in my foster home and I love to look out the window.

Greetings! I’m Jazz, a 1yr old beautiful boy. I’m a big playful guy who just loves to crawl on you to give hugs! I am a wonderful lap cat but I can also be quite an energized and playful kitty. I would need some time to be properly introduced to another cat but being on my own would be awesome too. Just as long as I find my forever home!

Why hello there, I’m Widget! I am a 6yr old, exuberant, funny and affectionate kitty. I’ve learned how to turn on lights with my nose and will often chase my dry food around the kitchen before eating it! With some patience I will make a wonderful life long companion. I would do best in a home without small children.

Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue Society I’m a 7mths old and a designer X (my mom is a Boxer) named Casha. My foster mom is a dog trainer and she is doing wonders with me teaching me doggy manners and helping me understand why I can’t always have my own way just because I’m so pretty. I’m a very energetic girl and I would do best in an active household with an experienced owner.

I am a Lab/ Shepherd X around 2yrs old named Fergie. Benny, Suki and Brooke are my babies, but guess what? No more babies for me! I just love going for walks and I am good on leash. I seem to be very good with small dogs, even the silly little resident Chihuahua

Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) Hi, I’m Harley and I’ve been here at the EHS since May. I’m an independent boy who needs an active family willing to give me time to bond. I have lots of energy, and will do best in a home with a family 16yrs+. I also have a high prey drive and love to chase cats, but I do get along really well with other dogs. Give me a chance and I will give you unconditional love in return!

I’m Adidas, a 1.5yr old sociable boy with a lot of love to give! I was a stray until the folks at Edmonton’s City Animal Control Services picked me up. So I’m now here... waiting for someone to be committed enough to give me a forever home. I am currently living with a few other cats and I think I would settle well into a home with other animals.

I’m Sparkle and I have been here since May waiting patiently for my forever home. I was found as a stray and originally brought to the Edmonton City Pound. I am an affectionate girl who just loves to cuddle and I also really enjoy the company of other rabbits. I love to spend time out of my kennel in a supervised environment to hop around and explore.

s you get ready to bring a cat or kitten into your home, make sure you have all the things you will need to make your new pet feel welcome. Besides providing high-quality food, a safe environment, proper veterinary care, and lots of love, it is also important to give some thought to your cat’s litter box. While this may not seem like a very important subject at first, the litter box can quickly become the major focus of your attention should your cat decide to stop using it. Elimination disorders are one of the biggest reasons for cats to be given up to shelters, and one of the most common problems for which people seek veterinary advice. While it’s true that most cats will instinctively use a litter box from the time they are young kittens, some basic knowledge about cats and litter boxes can help prevent problems from starting in the first place. And, as we all know, it’s much easier to prevent a problem than to deal with it after it’s started! Here are some important points to keep in mind:

New kittens Cats have a natural instinct to eliminate in sand or soil, and kittens also learn from observing their mother. Kittens usually start learning to use the litter box at 3 or 4 weeks of age, so by the time you bring your kitten home, she will likely be used to using a litter box. You will not need to train your kitten to use the litter box in the same way that you would housebreak a puppy. However, it is important to make sure your kitten knows the location of the litter box in her new surroundings. Make sure the box is not in a noisy or hard-to-reach place. Soon after you bring your kitten home, take her to the litter box at a quiet time. Place her into the litter box, gently take her front paws and show her how to scratch at the litter once or twice. Don’t worry if she jumps right out again. Place her in the box at the times throughout the day when a cat would normally go to the bathroom: first thing in the morning, and after meals, playing, and waking up from a nap. Remember that cats prefer privacy when using the litter box, so once you see that she has used the box, leave her alone. Most cats will make the adjustment to a new litter box without any problems. However, if there are any accidents, don’t scold or punish your cat. Yelling or using a squirt bottle will only confuse and scare your cat, and she won’t understand why you are upset. Instead, clean up the accident with an enzyme cleaner to remove stains and odor. Then go back to square one, placing the 8

Litter Box Training for your Kitten The Basics kitten in the litter box frequently until she starts using it. If the accidents continue, or if you are noticing any diarrhea or straining, have your kitten examined by your veterinarian to rule out any possible medical problems. Cats with urinary tract disease or intestinal parasites may stop using the litter box.

Number of boxes The rule of thumb here is that you should provide one litter box per cat, plus one extra. While this may seem excessive to us, cats are very fastidious and some cats will not use a litter box that other cats have used. Some cats also prefer to use one box to urinate in and another to defecate in. If your house has several levels, make sure there are litter boxes on every floor.

Location Cats prefer to use the litter box in a quiet, private place where they feel safe. Loud noises (buzzers on washers and dryers, etc),

August 2009

people walking in and out, or being startled by a dog or challenged by another cat as they leave the litter box, can be disturbing enough to make your cat choose another location. If your dog tries to steal a snack from the cat’s litter box, try placing a baby gate across the doorway to the room the litter box is in (this would also work in a closet doorway, if needed). Place the gate a few inches off the floor so that the cat can get under it but the dog cannot. Besides preventing the dog from harassing the cat as she enters or leaves the box, this will prevent the chance of your dog developing an intestinal obstruction from eating cat litter, or becoming infected with any intestinal worms the cat may have. If your dog is small enough to go under the gate, position the bottom of the gate at the floor and for kittens or arthritic cats, place a stepstool in front of the gate to help the cat jump up and over. Paw And Claws Animal Rescue

Bashful

Dopey

We are a brother and sister duo named Samson and Morley. We are pretty confident and we often figure nearly nine feet tall! We told off the adult dog in the house when we came in and we are pretty sure that she was terrified. We are Shepherd crosses who weigh about 3lbs and are 7wks old.

Doc

Sleepy

We are what is left of the Seven Dwarfs: Sleepy, Happy, Doc, Sneezy, Dopey, and Bashful. Happy took off exploring so we didn’t get his picture... but he’s still happy! We are 6wks old, and Sneezy they tell us we are Australian Shepherd and maybe Husky X. One of us has no tail and one of us has a half-a-tail… but all of us are sweet, confident and outgoing. We can also poop in our water dish!

I am a young boy named Chanse who is looking for a permanent and loving home. I like other cats and adore people…they call me a sweet little man! If you have a home you could share please call soon -my schedule is wide open! Give A Dog A Spot: I am sponsored by the Seibert family Thank You

There are eight of us all together and we are about 6wks old. We are the Alberta Country Litter. We were taken from Mom early because the big thing, that now brings us food, said she was rail-thin and had nothing left to give. We will be kept together for another three weeks to help foster healthy socialization, teach bite inhibition and learn to play properly. Our names are Jaydee, Corb, Lund, Bixby, Canyon, Brandt, Yellowbird and Lang! We have all sorts of breeds in our mix: Rottweiler, Collie, Boxer, Shepherd, St. Bernard…and who knows what else!

My name is Angelle, and I am being fostered with my two little babies Lenita and Tiffany. I am a good mother, and they are two of the sweetest kittens ever. My foster mom says I had babies when I was just a baby myself…but never again! I get along well with other cats and can’t wait to find my forever, and ever, and ever, family. I am Bartok. I seem to have been abused and as a result I am scared of everyone and everything. I had to be trapped to be caught and I am only 4mths old. I am slowly getting more confident but I need a special someone with patience and a gentle hand to adopt and love me forever.

Edmonton Reptile & Amphibian Society (ERAS) Hi, I am one of a pair of Leopard Geckos in need of a good home. We were becoming too much work, so our owner surrendered us to ERAS. We are really good eaters and very curious little creatures. Please consider us as new members for your family.

Forget Me Not Cat Sanctuary Hello, my name is Sabrina. I’m a very pretty black and white medium-hair girl and I am around 1yr old. Because I’ve been through some hard times in my short little life, I have developed a very tolerant and accepting personality. I didn’t make a fuss when the other cats hissed at me when I was new to the sanctuary because I knew that in a short time, we would all become friends. And, that’s exactly what happened. I like it here a lot, but I would love to settle down in a loving forever home, and if other cats live there too, that would be more than fine with me.

Hi there. I’m Sammy. I am about 1yr old and a big fluffy male. I am all black with one white whisker. I was terrified of everything when I came to my foster Mom’s but I am doing great now. While I don’t like to be held, I am very affectionate and loving. I would do best in a home with lots of company or a companion to play with, but not dogs. I am still very playful and love to chase toys. I am ready to go to my new home. Could that be yours?

Terra is the name. I am about 8mths old, female and a beautiful dilute calico. I have personality plus and a great motor when I am being cuddled. I love to play and can run circles around the best of them. I do enjoy my quiet times too though. While I tolerate the other cats around here, I would prefer to have a home all to myself. How about yours?

My name is Dixie and I am about 3yrs old. I like people’s company and being petted but I’m not much of a cuddler. I am very quiet but do still have a playful streak in me. I need to be the only cat in my new home. Maybe it could be yours?

Ellie here! I was cared for by a kind-hearted volunteer from the sanctuary. She took me into her home until there was room for me to stay with the other adoptable kittens and cats at the sanctuary. I’m a little survivor under a year old and rather independent, so it has been great for me to learn to live and share with the others. Even though I act tough sometimes and give a little hiss to the bigger cats, I’m really a marshmallow at heart, and love to be petted and cuddled. I would make someone a true blue and very pretty companion.

This relaxed and friendly kitty is me, Willow! I’m a beautiful brown and orange short-hair tabby girl and the vet says I’m a little over a year old. I had no previous experience at raising kids but they say I’m pretty good at it. I have two beautiful babies named Raisin and Tangerine who have already been adopted and will be going to their new home in late August. My dad at the sanctuary calls them my little willow branches and their new adoptive mom calls them her pussy willows! I get along great with the other kitties here and love to sit beside a human and chat away in my soft chirping voice and be my sweet affectionate self.

Hi! I love the new name I was given which is Cheyenne. And I love my chance at a new life even more. Life on the street was pretty rough for me and my kitten, Cricket, but that didn’t get us down because we both have a very positive attitude. After a short stay at the pound, we were whisked off to the sanctuary, and we are now both ready to graduate to our own adoptive homes. I’m just under 1yr old and am a soft grey tabby short haired girl (with silver highlights!). I’m a tiny bit shy for only a moment and love to be cuddled and petted and then I purr up a storm.

You got it, I’m Cricket, Cheyenne’s little girl! I came into this world sometime in early April and my mom took very good care of me, even though we lived on the street the first few months. She always saved the best little bits for me to eat, so I have grown into a healthy lively kitten with lots of energy. I love to play and cuddle and my mom is teaching me to purr real loud like she does. My black coat is short and very shiny and they say I’m very striking, but I don’t think they mean that I would hit anyone, because I’m a very gentle kind little cat, just like my mom.

We have 16 little reasons in our sanctuary why you should spay or neuter your pet! That‛s 64 little paws waiting to go to their life long home. These little charmers are ready for adoption this September. Please call if you could love them as much as we do. www.forgetmenotcats.com ~ (780) 700-5525 10

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) My name is Annie and I am a Shepherd X who is still pretty new around here…actually I’m pretty new for anywhere cause I’m only 10wks old! The volunteers say I am extremely sweet and super duper extra special. Please visit the SCARS website for updated information.

My name is Spike and I love to make people smile with my goofy grin! I’m about 2-3yrs old and likely a Terrier X. I get a little nervous when the little ones run around fast so I think a home with no children (or possibly older children) would be best. I am in need of a little grooming in this picture but soon I will be as dapper as can be. I’ve been with SCARS for awhile now but not because I have anything wrong with me, I guess I am just not as lucky as some of the others. I’m a large girl who loves people and I am great on and off leash. I especially love going for quad rides and playing with my buddy Randy. I am about 2-3yrs old and listen very well. Oh yah, I almost forgot to tell you my name is Della.

I’m a 2yr old Collie X named Sabre. I have been great with other dogs but not sure on those cat things yet. I am very well behaved but do get into the odd mitt or shoe. Usually I just like to collect them, not destroy them! I am smart, great off leash and listen well. I also love toys!

What’s a nice little guy like me doing roaming the streets? I’ll never tell you, but it has not been a fun ride that’s for sure. I’m new here and my name is Trooper. I am a Pomeranian/ American Eskimo X that seriously needs a good grooming! I am excellent on leash and crate trained.

Lincoln here… what a handsome guy I am! I’m only around 1yr old but quite big already. I love to follow my foster mom around, and I’m so happy to get attention. I came from the pound with several of my SCARS buddies and seem to be good with other dogs.

My foster mom says it breaks her heart when she gets dogs like me. I am an older girl, with one bad eye, they call Uma. SCARS’s is hoping I have a family searching for me because, although I need a grooming, I have been well fed. If no one comes then SCARS says I will be safe with them until someone special comes to adopt me. I am a very sweet Border Collie and I am good with other dogs.

My name is Mason and I am smiling because I am so happy to be at SCARS. I was living alone in this big world and it’s scary! When I came in I was injured, but everything’s healed now. I love people, going for walks, hanging out with other dogs, and I am thriving in my safe little world. I am just so happy you could never wipe this smile from my face! The McDonald Family Animal Rescue Pssssssst...It’s me, Birch. Are you allergic to cats and dogs? I may be the answer because I don’t have dander or that fur stuff that can be so irritating. I enjoy being handled, and sitting on your shoulders in the sun is just heavenly to me. I arrived very sick; I hadn’t eaten much, I had layers of dead skin hanging off me and was even temporarily blind because of my unshed eye caps. I also could not breathe properly because of a painful infection in my mouth. But now my infection has been treated, my appetite is back and I have shed every last dead scale. I would be a handsome addition to your family, and you don’t even have to take me for a walk –well unless I’m hanging off you! It’s me, Button. I was found terrified, almost completely blind and abandoned on a country road. Since rescue I have had many teeth pulled, my ear & eye infections have been treated and my filthy painfully matted coat has been shaved. I look like a purebred Shih Tzu and it is obvious that I lovelovelove life. I can be a little wary outside but I really like other dogs, cats and people. Please find me a little corner on your bed, I am a very polite bedmate and will love you forever.

Our names are Jake and Elwood. We love living together, adore playtime and enjoy spending time in our outdoor playpen. Let us graze in your yard and we’ll make quick work of those pesky dandelions! We have been here a very long time and would really love a forever home.

My name is Frieda and I gave birth to 3 polydactyl kittens just like me. When they were just one month old, I adopted 4 more kittens whose mother could no longer care for them. Don’t get me wrong, I loved being a mom, but now I am ready to find a family to care for me. My giant paws are very unusual and I have the cutest grey spot on my nose! My name is Sallie and I am stunning! I was rescued from an abusive situation but I am now living at the greatest foster home. I would love to settle in with someone who will keep me indoors and brush me all the time! This gorgeous white coat looks best with my blue eyes when it is fluffy!

Hearts & Hooves Well hello! My name is Tug and I am a 9yr old gelding. I am quite bold and curious for such a little guy! I used to be a little girl’s riding horse, but now I keep the big horses company. If you’re looking for a companion for other animals, I may be your guy!

My name is George and I am an 8yr old gelding. I was in bad shape when I was rescued but I’m now happy and healthy. I am very shy and need time to come out of my shell, but I have a sweet disposition. I need a quiet home and promise to be more than content just to mow your lawn! They named me Sunny because of the beautiful blonde streaks in my mane and tail. I am a quiet 10yr old gelding. Sometimes I can be tricky to catch, but I amaze everyone with my good manners and sweet nature. If you are interested in my friends or me, please visit the website and fill out the online adoption form today!

I’m Vinnie, a 14yr old chestnut gelding. I am very laidback and get along well with other horses. I also like to follow my human friends around in the hopes of finding treats in their pockets! We all have a clean bill of health and come with a health certificate, current shots, a hoof trim and halter.

Hearts and Hooves is a local Alberta charity that rescues and cares for miniature horses. Adoption fees vary.

Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS) My name is Obby and I was found wandering in the country. I have had puppies recently but that won’t be happening ever again. I love people, especially the kids in my foster home. I am good with other dogs but really I’m just all about my people. I think I may be a Cairn Terrier X and I know I will make a wonderful companion.

My name is Jasper and my body tells the story of my past life surviving on the streets. Hungry, abused and with no one to call my own I have still kept my good spirits because I am convinced that a special someone will come for me soon. I can’t wait to have a spot in someone’s heart, and loving arms to cuddle up safe in. I am about 5yrs old.

My name is Lily and I was well loved until my world was turned upside down when my master was no longer able to care for me. I am an older gal who is praying for a quiet retirement home to live out the rest of my life. I am in good health and I’m very affectionate.

Zoom! Zip! Zing! I sure keep the kids around here occupied with my many merry antics! I’m Urban. I am 1.5yrs old and I’m looking for an active home to call my own. I’m leash & house trained, weigh about 24lbs and I am absolutely beautiful –if I do say so myself. I am also good with other dogs, cats and kids.

Litter Box Training For Your Kitten

Hinton & District SPCA

Continued from page 8

If you have more than one cat, make sure that the litter box is not in a location where one cat can ‘corner’ another as she leaves the litter box (for example in a hallway that ends in a dead-end). There should always be an entrance and an escape route. Most cats prefer not to have their litter box right next to their food dish, so avoid this situation if possible.

Size and type of litter box My name is Ludo and I am a fantastic Yellow Lab X. I am a happy-go-lucky kinda guy and I love to run and play. Lately I have enjoyed playing with my new friend here named Old Man. Do you have a home you could share with a sweet fur face like mine?

Shoot…the name kind of implies that I’m old, but I’m not. I was only named Old Man because I was found near the Old Man Bridge outside of Hinton. I am a happy-go-lucky and beautiful Beagle. I love to run in the offleash area and play with my new friend Ludo.

There are many types of litter boxes available, including covered boxes, self-cleaning boxes, and boxes designed to fit into corners. Make sure the litter boxes you provide are the right size(s) for your cat(s). Some animal behaviorists say that the litter boxes people provide are often too small. Keep in mind that kittens or geriatric cats may need boxes with lower sides. If you need a large box with relatively low sides, consider using sweater storage boxes. You can also cut down the sides of the sweater box if needed. Some cats may feel more secure in a litter box with a hood. This can also be helpful for cats who dig very enthusiastically as they cover things up. This may also work well for cats who stand on the edge of the box to urinate or defecate. However, a hooded box can concentrate odor and should be cleaned daily. The new automatic self-cleaning litter boxes can save on clean-up time, but some models are noisy. Some cats seem to be bothered by the noise, some apparently are not. If you have several cats, you might want to provide several types of litter boxes and let your cats choose between them.

Litter type My coat is black so they call me Tar! I love to run and I will play fetch until you drop! I don’t mind most dogs but there are some male dogs I do not care too much for. I have a tendency to jump up so I would not be good in a house with small children but I would be happy to work with you on some manners.

I am a Shepherd X named Quinton, although I should be named Houdini as I am a bit of an escape artist. I do not like most other male dogs, but I do love people and I have off leash potential. I LOVE playing in our shelter off-leash area with Zyra. I’ve just heard Zyra got adopted, is it my turn yet?

In general, cats seem to like a litter that has the consistency of beach sand or garden soil. They seem to prefer fine-textured litter (such as the clumping type) to more coarse litter, and unscented litter to scented. Two inches of litter in the box is usually sufficient. It generally works better to use less litter and change it more frequently. If you’re not sure what type of litter to use, put several types out, including clumping and non-clumping, and see which your cats prefer.

Cleanliness Cats are extremely clean creatures, and they may avoid a litter box that is not cleaned often enough. Scoop the litter boxes at least once

Whitecourt Homeless Animal Rescue Foundation (WHARF) Hello, I’m Gus and I came to WHARF with the rest of my littermates. I am 7wks old and probably the most playful of my litter. I love to fall asleep in my people’s arms after playtime…and well any time really! Please call soon and ask for the good looking guy named Gus!

Hi, I’m Lionel and I came into WHARF with my 3 brothers. I am 7wks old and definitely the cutest kitten ever! I like to play, but once I get tired I love to snuggle in your arms until I fall asleep. Do you have a home in your heart for me?

Hey there, my name is Chino. I am 1.5yrs old and full of energy. I have great recall and excellent off leash skills. I am good with other dogs and children. Hmm, I do like to chase the livestock and cats where I’m fostered though, I just can’t understand why they don’t want to play with me.

Horoscopes

Paws For Life (PAWS) My name is Zipper and I have the short legs of a Corgi, but the brain of a Terrier. I love to be the center of attention and require a family that has experience dealing with the Terrier breed. I have not yet had the opportunity to live in a foster home but spent the weekend camping with a volunteer and had tons of fun!

Hi there, my name is Phillip and I am an adorable Shih Tzu X. I am fairly new here but I already get along great with the other dogs, cats, and people (including kids). I need a kind and loving home that is willing to go back to the basics with me and teach me about manners.

My name is Georgia and although I am new they have already fallen in love with me. I was found wondering the streets of Edmonton and it seems I recently gave birth to a litter of puppies. I am a really sweet and innocent girl who would love to be your newest family member.

Hi there, my name is Timmy because I was really timid when I first came to PAWS but now I am the life of the party. I love playing with my dog friends, getting cuddles from everyone, and being the center of attention. I need a little time to trust new people, but once I know you everything is OK!

What’s In The Stars For Your Pets This Month? Aries: March 21 - April 19 Storms are often terrifying to pets but you must take special care to stay cool as a cat while out of familiar surroundings this month. Bolting in fear from the thunder or lightning may leave you in danger or lost. Taurus: April 20 - May 20 You must resist the garden and flowerbeds. They are not a site for buried treasure, a meadow to roll around in, or a litterbox. Stay away from anywhere people are digging or you will have your caregiver mad as a wet hen. Gemini: May 21 - June 20 The stars feel your frustration and boredom of being cooped up inside, but safety first! So ask your people to get a harness or outdoor enclosure, with good shade, to keep you safe or catch some rays in the window. Cancer: June 21 - July 22 Your people may not realize why you might chew shoes, rip down curtains, pull up linoleum or pee on others belongings. Help them understand that you need regular attention, exercise and training to be a good dog! Leo: July 23 - August 22 This month will bring many challenges your way. You can try to prepare but it’s difficult to forecast...anticipate and plan for the worst to avoid disappointment so you can maintain that smile close to your whiskers! Virgo: August 23 - September 22 With the family vacationing this month you may feel a little left out. Try not to take it to heart though, you must understand that your families life can’t always be just about your walks in the park (just most of the time!)

I am a young Border Collie X named Trigger and I am one handsome devil! I would be a great dog for a family that could give me a “job” to do. I love playing dog sports and recently competed in a disc competition where I was judged to be the most improved dog throughout the competition!

Libra: September 23 - October 22 Your habit of acting before thinking may be appreciated even less this month...and also move you further from your goals. Take time to think and try to get all of your ducks in a row before allowing instinct to kick in.

(780) 471-2275

Scorpio: October 23 - November 21 Your dependants will be on the move this month and may require your guidance and supervision. Be sure to watch them closely mid month or they will be out of sight and in trouble within two shakes of a lamb’s tail.

Litter Box Training For Your Kitten

Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 Your wandering mind and restless spirit may tempt you this August if your people do not ensure you have enough exercise. Find adventure romping in the yard or beg for a run at the park...but no Houdini acts please!

daily. Wash the litter box and change the litter completely once a week. Do not clean the box with a strong smelling disinfectant, but rinse the box well after washing it. Any accidents should be cleaned up with an enzyme cleaner specifically made for pet stains, including cat urine. Regular cleaners may mask the odor so that we can’t smell it, but to a cat’s superior sense of smell, the odor will still be discernible, and can prompt a cat to continue to use that area as the bathroom.

Summary Most cats have a strong instinct to use a litter box, and cats do not need to be housebroken in the same way that we housetrain dogs. Capricorn: December 22 - January 19 With so many concerns on the brain mid month you may find it hard to make any decisions at all. Just remember, you can mull things over until the till the cows come home but some things you will never control. Aquarius: January 20 - February 18 It’s time to get wet. Whether it’s a sprinkler, a kiddie pool, bath time or the lake, it is written in the stars! Watch the summer heat if your outside though it will leave you as freckled as a turkey egg! Pisces: February 19- March 20 While you’re enjoying the weather take time to relax. Sun yourself, lie in the shade with a bone, steal a sandal to slobber on, or work on a game plan to secure more cookies and playtime once the kids return to school.
