Duke & Duchess Animal Rescue Hi there I am Archer. I am a 5mth old puppy that was rescued from the dump. A nice man came out to feed us and I ran right up to him… he just couldn’t leave me behind! I am a really friendly guy and I get along well with other dogs and all people. Please call about me!

I’m a 13yr young sweetheart named Brandi and I am in excellent health. I had my teeth cleaned and now I have movie star pearly whites! I was very loved but sadly my owner passed away. I’m looking for someone to walk with and then curl up to snuggle & watch TV.

They call me Emjay and I am a 2yr old Labradoodle. Pretty handsome don’t you think? I know all my basic commands and I’m well behaved. I am good on leash and really hope to find a family who can give me the attention and exercise I deserve.

Hello I’m happy you’re reading about me. My name is Flame I am 1.5yrs old and weigh about 30lbs. My foster mom says I am a very sweet guy who can be a bit shy but I’m good with kids, cats and other dogs. I would make a wonderful family pet.

My name is Hailey but they call me the DIVA because I tend to speak up when I want something. I enjoy cuddling and really love belly rubs. I am a little shy when meeting new people but that passes quickly. I have big paws so I will likely be a big girl.

I am a 5yr old Shep X named Sadie. I ADORE children… and will make a beeline straight for them. I also love playing with other dogs and going for walks. I have had many litters but those days are over now and all I really want is a home with some special kids to love me forever.

Zoe’s Animal Rescue Society Parker here! I came from a stay in a Pound. That part of my life is over so I’m a happy boy! I’m a high energy Shep X who’s looking for an active family with no children under 12. I’m good with people, like dogs but not good with cats. Fetch…anyone?

I am a very lucky girl! My name is Zoe and I came from a highkill dog shelter in South Carolina thanks to two private sponsors who brought me here. I am a very sweet and well trained Pit Bull and if you give me a chance I will work very hard at making your family complete!

Well hello world! I’m Daffy and I can be the life of the party. I’m always on the go but when I do slow down I’m a huge cuddle bug. I love toys and playing. I will need a very active home when I grow up to burn off all my energy...just sayin’.

I’m Sasha a 12wk old Shep.X. Everyone says I’m a sweet-natured, cuddly boy who will melt your heart in a moment! If you want to check out my charming ways you all Zoe’s and ask to meet me. Now really can you resist me?

Hello! My name is Murphy. I’m a very happy 1yr old. Rotti/Shep/Collie X boy. I am housetrained and I get along GREAT with other dogs. My foster mom says I am polite, energetic, smart and loyal. Hurry come and see me!

My name is Bella and I am a 9.5yr old German Shepard who was surrendered to ZOE’s for no fault of my own. I am a calm, gentle girl who just wants a family to love me. I love to play and go in the pool at my foster mommy’s house. I get along well with kids and other dogs just as long as they aren’t too domineering. I don’t bark at other dogs, sleep through the whole night, and I know basic commands. Please consider being my Furever home! I will love you furever!

Hi there my name is Folly. I’m at Zoe’s with my sister Sara. We were found abandoned inside a bag of insulation in mid-November.

We are wonderful fun-loving, excitable Lab X pups and at 12wks old we’re ready to start our adventure in our life-long homes.

I’m Susi Q! I have soft shiny black hair and lovely warm brown eyes. I am a small 1.5yr old Lab/Collie X. Right now I am learning some basics, like how to walk on a leash. I already love my crate and my new chew toys.

Tail Of The Month by Jamie Hunter

City Wolves by: Dorris Heffron

These guides tend to highlight the often wolf-like nature of humans throughout the book. Published in 2010, City Wolves by Dorris Heffron is a wonderful historical fiction that doesn’t read like the history lessons you might expect. After what must have been meticulous research, Heffron tells an enthralling tale about a trailblazing woman born in 1870, named Meg Wilkinson, from Nova Scotia. Meg becomes Canada’s first female veterinarian but after tragedy strikes her personal life she heads west for Dawson City to provide her services as a “Dog Doctor” for sled dogs during the gold rush. From the wild journey west to just surviving the winter, City Wolves brings forward a lively description of the many challenges faced by those brave enough to take on the Yukon gold rush in addition to those faced by an ambitious and entrepreneurial woman in those times. Meg is observed by Inuit spirit guides, Ike & Piji, who started a dog sledding line in their time. 8

pet rescue magazine

December/January 2013

Inspired by wolves as a child and guided by this ancient Inuit couple the author has managed to bring Meg’s world and Canadian history to life. This along with the fantastic descriptions of towns and the many people one might expect a gold rush to attract keeps the reader intrigued. With a little romance thrown in, and a history lesson to boot, you really can’t go wrong with this book. About the Author Dorris Heffron was born in Noranda, Quebec. While teaching for Oxford University throughout the seventies, she wrote three novels about teenagers which were internationally acclaimed as pioneers of young adult literature. Returning to Canada in 1980, she became an active member of writers’ organizations and wrote the popular adult novel, A Shark in the House. She lives with her pack and sled dogs at Little Creek Wolf Range near Collingwood, Ontario. local stories...local people...local pets

Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) Hello there, I’m a 3yr old girl named Dixie who is really hoping someone will fall in love with me! I came with a litter of kittens that have all since been adopted... but not me. I love a quiet atmosphere with gentle rubs and cuddles from people. My $130.00 adoption fee has been sponsored, so you can take me home without having to pay, and that still includes my spay surgery, microchipping, first set of vaccinations, complimentary post-adoption veterinary exam and much more.

My name is Doc. I am a 2yr old blue/grey Budgie and I have been waiting for a new home for over two months. I was initially placed in foster care to get healthy after suffering from a vitamin deficiency in my previous home. I was living without other birds and did just fine, however I did spend a lot of time talking to myself in the mirror so I think I would also be happy with another bird. I am a happy & very vocal budgie that filled my foster home with bird songs from day one.

My name is Martin and I am a 1yr old Shepherd X. I think everything is fun, interesting and meant for play, especially you! Life with me will keep you on your toes, and the fun is guaranteed. I am food motivated and already know many of my basic commands. With so much energy to burn the EHS staff taught me how to run on the treadmill which I quite enjoy. My new owners must continue my training, and will also be given 3 free private training sessions with a behavior consultant to help them be successful with me.

I lovelovelove attention but I’m not just about sweetness and cuddles. I’m looking for an active family who could take me jogging than go home for some rousing games of chase.

“Here comes Santa Paws, here comes Santa Paws…” My name is Copper and first on my X-Mas list is a forever home. I’m such a good boy that Santa just can’t say no! I’m even good with cats… so no black lumps of coal in my stocking. If you can make my wish come true please call.

I’m Julius. Being returned is hard, and to begin that search all over again seems so unfair! Unfortunately my family had to give me back after 5yrs because they run a dayhome (allergies). I am a smaller guy around 30lbs and I am already house & crate trained. I am also very sweet, and great with cats, other dogs and children.

My name is Drifter. Am I handsome or what??? I am a very friendly 1yr old Husky/Wolfhound X. So far I have been great with other dogs and I sure do love treats and attention. Can I ring in the New Year with you please? Please give me a chance, I promise to be the best dog I can be!

I am almost 6wks old now and very busy exploring the world. They call me Moxie and tell me I am a very brave girl who always wants to be where my people are. In fact I often hear about being ‘underfoot’ ...silly people, I’m not ‘under’ foot – but I am right beside!

Hello! Moo here. I am a very sweet natured girl who loves to snuggle. I will be a wonderful addition and the purrfect family pet. I was born mid August and have three siblings that also need homes.

My name is Datona and I just arrived with my 7 brothers and sisters. I am the shy one but I am coming around quickly and love getting attention. I am wishing on every star I see for someone to adopt me so I can start 2013 in my very own home.

A Day In The Life Of A Veterinarian with Dr. Heather Steele DVM

It’s time for another busy day at the South Side Animal Hospital!

Dr. Heather Steele DVM is the owner and an associate veterinarian at South Side Animal Hospital in Edmonton as well as a volunteer veterinarian with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton. She is currently the proud guardian to five rescue animals – dogs Bella and Kelsey and cats Sasha, Simba and Max. Questions regarding this article on the life of a veterinarian can be directed to her at ssah@telus.net

Dr. Tanya Marrazzo gets ready for her surgical case for the morning. Rocky is our resident clinic cat and has a number of teeth that are chipped from when he was a stray. He has been having some pain in his mouth recently and Dr. Marrazzo has decided that he should have dental xrays to check for any teeth that are infected or broken into the root canal and may require extractions.

After the xrays, Dr. Marrazzo determines that three teeth need to be extracted. but it has been difficult stabilizing her cells at a safe level. Thankfully her blood count has not dropped from yesterday which lets me know the medications she is on to stop her overactive immune system are starting to work. She will need to stay on intravenous fluids for a few more days and will be on medications for the rest of her life to help control this condition. Next I check Max, a 15 year old orange tabby cat who had a lung tumor removed at the specialist centre the day before. He is staying in our hospital to make sure his incision is not infected, to give him medication to control his pain, and to make sure he does not have any difficulty Max after his surgery breathing. Max seems very happy, his gums are a nice and healthy pink color, and he is very comfortable. Hopefully he will remain stable so he can go home later in the day. Lastly I check in on “Igor”, a wild pigeon that was brought in after he had been hit by a vehicle. Igor has a fracture on the top of his skull and has lost the skin and feathers on the top of his head. Ashley, one of our animal care attendants, has been cleaning the wound daily and he is being treated with antibiotics and pain killers. Igor is eating well, seems comfortable, and the wound is Ashley and Igor beginning to heal. Now that the hospitalized pets are taken care of, it’s time to start appointments. First I get to see Atticus the labradoodle puppy. He is here for his final set of vaccines and a nail trim. set of vaccines and a deworming pill. It is difficult to listen to his heart because he is purring so loud! Cooper the chocolate lab has been limping and has a torn cranial cruciate ligament in her knee. Unfortunately she had surgery on her other knee and will need to go back to the specialist for a special surgery to repair it. I send off a referral form to the specialist and we take a blood test to check her liver and kidney function prior to surgery. Isabella the lionhead rabbit is a stray bunny that was brought into the local wildlife shelter and needs a check up and a nail trim. She is a healthy girl so she will foster with one of our staff members until we can find a home Danielle and our volunteer Michelle for her. with Isabella Heidi the guinea pig comes in because she is urinating more often than usual. We take a urine sample and send it to the lab to check for a bladder infection. Many more animals are seen before the appointments are finished. After a busy day of helping our furry friends, I head to my desk to return phone calls. I call owners that have called with questions, check on my patients, and let owners know test results that have come in from the laboratory. I also spend time on the computer reading and researching on new treatments to help me learn new ways to help our patients. It has been another fun and exciting day the veterinary hospital. Every day is different and unexpected and I can’t wait for tomorrow to begin. prm

Victory! Canadian Trauma Labs End Animal Use All trauma-training laboratories in Canada have stopped using animals. The last two institutions in the country using animals— the University of Sherbrooke and Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal—recently moved to nonanimal methods. Many Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) programs in Canada had previously involved cutting open anesthetized pigs and dogs to practice emergency medical procedures. The University of Sherbrooke was using 32 dogs a year. Since 2009, seven Canadian ATLS programs have replaced animal use with simulators developed specifically for trauma training. Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal, the University of Saskatchewan, Queen’s University, and McMaster University all used live animals until PCRM convinced the institutions to use nonanimal methods. Now all of the nearly two dozen ATLS programs in Canada use only nonanimal methods. “Canada now leads the way in educational and ethical standards for ATLS training,” says John Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., PCRM’s director of academic affairs. “There is no justification for using live animals. Nonanimal teaching methods offer a more effective—and more humane—way to teach lifesaving procedures.” Only five of the more than 240 ATLS programs in the United States continue to use live animals for training.

Shelter

FROM THE

Storm

a cold weather look at animal protection By Travis Grant - Communications. Edmonton Humane Society

C

old days are busy for our Animal Protection Department here at the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS).

As the temperatures fall, the phones light up with calls from people concerned about the welfare of animals outside. Serving as an Animal Protection Peace Officer (APO) within the department is difficult, given the frustrations of seeing patterns of neglect that are easily avoidable, especially during the winter; nevertheless, 16

pet rescue magazine

December/January 2013

APOs have an unshakeable commitment to protecting and saving animal lives. I began working in EHS’s communications department at the beginning of November. For brevity’s sake, let me just say that the learning curve has been immense. Within days of starting, the temperatures dropped and heavy snow began falling, which got people at the shelter talking about the first big issue on which my work would focus: cold weather and animals at risk. local stories...local people...local pets

When the request came across the communications desk to write an article on the subject, I knew I needed an authoritative perspective. My colleague emailed Peace Officer Grey and asked her to come by the communications department, to provide us with her front-line perspective and experiences responding to calls about animals and cold weather. Part of me expected the office door to be darkened by a stony-faced law enforcement type. Precisely the opposite, Peace Officer Grey smiled and greeted us at the door before kneeling to meet my dog, Olive. Rather than sit in a chair, she sat on the office floor to let Olive climb into her lap. Olive curled into a comfortable position, her eyes growing heavy as Peace Officer Grey stroked behind her ears. Our conversation began on the topic of adequate shelters. Peace Officer Grey said that too often she has responded to calls where a shelter of sorts had been provided but was grossly inadequate. Some of the worst instances of improper shelter have involved pets locked in plastic

travel kennels without insulation or protection: “Animals don’t have any protection in these sorts of shelters. There are openings on each side, so the wind blows in from every direction.” Peace Officer Grey also talked local stories...local people...local pets

about an instance where a pet owner had strapped a tarp over a snowfilled chain-link dog run. The dog inside the run had been exposed to the elements for too long and was clearly in distress. Even though it was a thick-coated northern breed, the dog still needed an option to get out of the elements and off the snow. An adequate cold-weather shelter should be insulated, wind proof and have a flap door.

that felines are not adapted to cold climates and suffer quickly from frost bite and other cold-related issues. This is why cats often climb under the hoods of cars, in search of heat cast from an engine. During the winter, it’s always good practice to honk your horn or bang on the hood of your car before starting it, to alert any stowaways.

I asked Peace Officer Grey if what we had talked about was specific to dogs or if it applied to cats, too. In a compassionate yet earnest tone, she

My conversation with Peace Officer Grey was an educational experience. It showed me our peace officers’ dedication to their role and their sincere commitment to animal welfare. Peace Officer Grey’s experiences opened my eyes to a recurring problem of distressed or at-risk animals that seems predicated more so upon a lack of understanding than meanspirited negligence. And while there is some intrinsic comfort in knowing the latter doesn’t prevail, it’s the lack of understandings – by virtue of its commonality – that causes companion animals the most harm. And this makes our peace officer’s role in the community one of vital importance. If you think there might be an

told me that cats should never be left outside unsupervised. If pet owners do take their cats out of doors, they should be kept on a leash or watched in a secure enclosure for short periods of time. The reason is

animal at risk or in distress, please call our Animal Protection Department in Edmonton at 780-491-3517. You can also fill out an online complaint form on our website: edmontonhumanesociety.com prm

Proper insulation is also a vital part of providing adequate shelter. Yet Peace Officer Grey said that poorly insulated shelters are a common problem. Many pet owners lay down blankets for their pets. But blankets take on moisture, freeze, and prevent an animal from staying warm. Animals need insulation that won’t freeze. A thick bed of straw, for instance, laid inside of a dog house will stay dry and allow an animal to burrow in it and preserve heat.

Rescue 100

Are you looking for a beautiful & gentle friend? My name is Molly and I’m a gorgeous chestnut Quarter Horse. I’m one of the lucky horses that Rescue 100 is sending to the Trainer’s Challenge at the Farm Fair. This is going to be a great experience for me, and maybe I’ll find my new home!!!

I am Mira, and I am a beautiful girl just like my mother Molly. I was born in rescue but now I’m growing up and learning lots of news things. I’m very smart, so I’m learning very quickly and can already lift my feet and wear a halter. I can’t wait to find my new forever home.

I’m such a lovely girl although I’m still very shy. My name is Sofia and I need someone to take me home and give me lots of one-on-one attention. I am just 2yrs old so I still have lots of time to learn and will be an amazing best friend. I have so much potential; I just need someone to help me shine.

www.rescue100.ca

You may think that pets can withstand the cold better than we can, but in sub-zero temperatures they need a warm place to shelter, this doesn’t have to be your house. Even northern breed dogs need an escape from the bitter weather of winter. Provide outdoor dogs with a well insulated, heated dog house, or an area in your garage that will keep them warm and out of the cold. 18

Am I stunning or what? My name is Cali and I’m a 4yr old long haired Tortie. I’m very adaptable, affectionate and playful.... my foster parents just adore me! I’m a quiet companion who is looking for a loving forever home.

I’m Cuddles. I am a lovely, sweet & calm 2yr old kitty who came into rescue with 4 kittens. They have all found good homes and now it’s finally my turn. I have lived with other cats and dogs, so I’m as adaptable as I am cute!

Freddy here! I’m a furry ball of love & energy. I would love to help people with work tasks or anything that would keep my body and mind stimulated. My ideal home will have a loving adult family, with no cats or livestock because I can get excitable.

Meow! I’m Gemma and I’m a chatty character who is as sweet as I am vocal. I had a tough life before my kittens and I came to NASAP, but I’m doing great in foster care. I’m looking for a warm & loving indoor-only home.

Hello, I’m Marley. I am a Shepherd X that stands about knee high. I respond very well to positive reinforcement and I’m well behaved at the park. I just love people, so I do whatever I can to keep them happy.

My name is Maggie and I am a total sweetheart. I am a 6mth old beauty who was found with 13 other orphaned kittens on the side of the road. I’m a playful girl who loves her toys, but also warm laps... maybe yours?

Hello, how do you do? My name is Miss Prissy and I just finished raising 4 beautiful kittens. I was a great Mom, but now I’m ready for a long & happy life in my own loving home. I’m 1.5yrs old and just as lovely as can be.

Barrhead Animal Rescue Society (BARS)

I am a very young Shepherd X named Purdy... I’m sure you can guess why! I love to snuggle, and it’s safe to say that I’m pretty spoiled in my foster home; my foster momma is wrapped around my little paw! I hope I can find a loving family soon.

Hello, it’s me Jedda. I am a very playful 10mth old Heeler X who absolutely adores children. I also love playing with other dogs and would love for my new home to have a doggy playmate. I sure hope my new family finds me in time to ring in the New Year together!

Happy Holidays everyone! My name is Boots and I am a very large Shepherd X. I just turned 1yr old in October and my foster mom says that I am the most obedient dog she’s ever had. I would do very well in a loving home with older children.

I’m Dolly. I am a senior Labrador Retriever X and I really need a nice retirement home to call my own. I am very well behaved and love to participate in quiet activities such as snuggling on the couch. Maybe you could give an ol’ gal like me a second chance at a great life?

Hello there! My name is Kolby and I don’t understand why I’m still here. I am a very loving and affectionate 3yr old Basenji/AmStaff X who gets along well with other large dogs. An adult only home, or home with older children, sounds best to me.

My name is Patches. I think life is pretty swell in foster care. I can’t even imagine how much I will love having my own home! I am almost completely house & crate trained, and I am sure to make a great addition to almost any family.

Oh… is there something on my nose? I’m Socks and Patches is my brother. My foster mom tells me that I am a very quick learner and am also a very playful boy. I will be ready for my new home at the end of December so please call now and ask about me.

They call me Beauty (and rightly so!) I am a 5mth old boy who loves to purr and be near “my people”. I also love to give and receive affection. Please consider adding me to your family today... I sure would love to be home for the holidays.

Hey guys, it’s me Maggie again. Can you believe I haven’t been adopted yet? Me neither. I’m a great little girl who loves to play and gets along well with everyone. My only wish is for a family... can you make my Christmas wish come true?

My name is Winter. Unfortunately, I lost one of my sisters & brother to the parvo virus which could have been easily prevented with a simple vaccine. Luckily my other sister and I survived. I get along great with other dogs, and love cats too.

Hi I’m Oscar. When I was rescued it was freezing rain outside... I was nearly a puppy icicle! I was so happy to be rescued and brought in where it was warm & safe. I love to play with my foster brothers & sisters, and everyone says I’m a really good boy.

My name is Tanner. I’ve been waiting for my forever home to discover me for nearly 6 months. I don’t understand; I’m so well mannered, eager to please, and I like to learn. I also love to play and I get along great with other dogs of all sizes.

My recall is pretty good, I can sit on command, and I also LOVE belly rubs. I really want a home so please call about me today.

My name is Popcorn but everyone calls me Poppy. I’m still a puppy but I am already kennel trained and have amazing recall. I also haven’t had any accidents in the house for over a month – Yahoo! Who’s your doggy!?! I like other dogs and although curious about cats I have not been mean.

Little Cats Lost (Trap-Neuter-Return) Society

Hi there, we are Amos and Bobby. We have been with LCL for a long time. We are such good boys and we don’t know why we are always overlooked, perhaps it’s because we are black. However, we feel that beauty comes from within and we certainly fit that bill. We are about 1.5yrs now and really need to find our homes. We would love to stay together.

We are the newest two kittens looking for homes. Our names are Ebony and Ivory and we are 12wk old boys. We are siblings and have braved the outdoors together since we were born so hopefully our new pet parents would be willing to let us stay together. We are sweet, a little shy but will soon blossom into perfect little kittens.

Meowser! We have just come into care from a southside neighbourhood. We were born in an alley and we are 8wks old and learning to trust people. We’re Dojo, Panda, and Tokyo. We are learning to play and gaining lots of confidence everyday. Our foster mom gives us an “A” for effort! If you think you could give any one of us a lifelong, loving home then please give LCL a call.

We am sponsored by The Seibert Family. Thank You!

Thank you to Champion Pet Foods for supplying LCL with Orijen and Acana cat food for our fosters.

We are Tinky and Winky a sister, brother combo. We are about 14wks and the cutest little kittens. We love people and love to play up a storm together. We don’t have to stay together, but how could anyone ever want to split us up. We’re looking for some luvin’ so hurry up and come and meet us!

Tails From Home

Hollywood

By Dave & Karen

I

recently adopted Hollywood who is a German Shepherd/Border Collie Cross who was sheltered by Sundance since Feb of 2012; and then fostered in a family home shortly after being rescued. Hollywood was approximately 7 months old when she was found malnourished and tied to a trampoline (her only shelter). Despite being left alone, outside, for much of the beginning of her life she socializes excellent with all dogs and people thanks to her amazing foster parent.

Thanks for reading and remember to have your pets spayed or neutered. If you would like to experience being a foster parent over the winter; please contact Sundance Canine Rescue at 780-850-6726; email foster@sundancecaninerescue.com or fill out a foster parent form on the webpage at sundancecaninerescue.com. There are many stray and abandoned dogs that live outside all year round with no shelter that need your help this winter. Thank you to all that help in your own way; it is appreciated!

Sundance Canine Rescue Society Our Vision: Provide a safe haven for all of Alberta's abused, neglected, and unwanted canines.

Our Mission: Working with members of Alberta's communities to educate on responsible pet ownership, helping them by removing the unwanted and neglected dogs and hosting adoption events to rehome the rehabilitated canines.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR FOSTER HOMES FOR OUR DOGS!

Hollywood and I have proven to be an excellent match for each other as we both have a lot of energy and enjoy going for runs or playing with the other dogs at the local dog park. Recently I have been training to complete a half Marathon in September and she is the best personal trainer you could ask for. When were not burning our energy off doing outdoors activities, you can usually find us snuggling together on the couch watching TV or reading books. It’s an amazing feeling to have adopted a rescue dog; they are the best dogs you could ask for as they are very affectionate and always aim to please you. Despite Hollywood’s rocky entrance into this world she has proven herself to be very resilient in keeping an excellent disposition and in allowing me into her life. Our latest planned activity together will be to enroll in agility classes this upcoming fall. local stories...local people...local pets

Rob Christie

blasts off the evening at SCARS’ Canine & Cocktails

N

ovember 2nd this year, was not just any Friday night, it was the date of the 8th Annual Canines & Cocktails dinner and auction, the proceeds of which went to benefit animals in need. The theme behind this year’s popular event was SCAR WARS. The room at the Palace Banquet and Conference Centre was futuristically staged out, and roaming around the room one could not miss the Storm Troopers and R2D2 who kindly donated their time from The 501st Legion. Luke Skywalker, brandishing his

light sabre, captured the room with his charm. The night blasted off with emcee Rob Christie, from “Rob & Audie in the Morning” at 96.3 Capital-FM, bringing the guests on their interplanetary evening to order when he shared the “low-down” on the evening events and then went on to Captain the stage throughout the evening. There were items galore to bid on in the silent auction from collectibles to Christmas fare and the live auction got underway when Gary Hanna and Ted Power,

SCARS is truly grateful to this year’s Canines & Cocktails table hosts, including:

who kindly donated their auctioneer services, took bids to new heights! A highlight for Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) during the event came from Paula Bissell and Shawn Molloy of Wabasca. Paula gave an inspirational speech about her SCARS experience, the Wabasca community and how “Apathy melts into compassion and action”. Compassion to the cause was overwhelming when Paula & Shawn presented SCARS with a cheque for $20,000!!!

Speaking with Jamie Hunter, Vice President of SCARS, she expressed her extreme gratitude to everyone who donated their time and efforts to pull the evening together. From Greg & Drew Mace of Instabox who provided transportation assistance and ongoing support, to the table hosts and last but not least the precious volunteers and supporters who donated time or items for auction. All in all it was a trip worth taking on a chilly winter night!
