City Wolves by: Dorris Heffron
These guides tend to highlight the often wolf-like nature of humans throughout the book. Published in 2010, City Wolves by Dorris Heffron is a wonderful historical fiction that doesn’t read like the history lessons you might expect. After what must have been meticulous research, Heffron tells an enthralling tale about a trailblazing woman born in 1870, named Meg Wilkinson, from Nova Scotia. Meg becomes Canada’s first female veterinarian but after tragedy strikes her personal life she heads west for Dawson City to provide her services as a “Dog Doctor” for sled dogs during the gold rush. From the wild journey west to just surviving the winter, City Wolves brings forward a lively description of the many challenges faced by those brave enough to take on the Yukon gold rush in addition to those faced by an ambitious and entrepreneurial woman in those times. Meg is observed by Inuit spirit guides, Ike & Piji, who started a dog sledding line in their time. 8

Inspired by wolves as a child and guided by this ancient Inuit couple the author has managed to bring Meg’s world and Canadian history to life. This along with the fantastic descriptions of towns and the many people one might expect a gold rush to attract keeps the reader intrigued. With a little romance thrown in, and a history lesson to boot, you really can’t go wrong with this book. About the Author Dorris Heffron was born in Noranda, Quebec. While teaching for Oxford University throughout the seventies, she wrote three novels about teenagers which were internationally acclaimed as pioneers of young adult literature. Returning to Canada in 1980, she became an active member of writers’ organizations and wrote the popular adult novel, A Shark in the House. A Day In The Life Of A Veterinarian with Dr. Heather Steele DVM
It’s time for another busy day at the South Side Animal Hospital!
Dr. Heather Steele DVM is the owner and an associate veterinarian at South Side Animal Hospital in Edmonton as well as a volunteer veterinarian with the Wildlife Rehabilitation Society of Edmonton. She is currently the proud guardian to five rescue animals – dogs Bella and Kelsey and cats Sasha, Simba and Max. Dr. Tanya Marrazzo gets ready for her surgical case for the morning. Rocky is our resident clinic cat and has a number of teeth that are chipped from when he was a stray. He has been having some pain in his mouth recently and Dr. Marrazzo has decided that he should have dental xrays to check for any teeth that are infected or broken into the root canal and may require extractions.

but it has been difficult stabilizing her cells at a safe level. Thankfully her blood count has not dropped from yesterday which lets me know the medications she is on to stop her overactive immune system are starting to work. She will need to stay on intravenous fluids for a few more days and will be on medications for the rest of her life to help control this condition. Next I check Max, a 15 year old orange tabby cat who had a lung tumor removed at the specialist centre the day before. He is staying in our hospital to make sure his incision is not infected, to give him medication to control his pain, and to make sure he does not have any difficulty Max after his surgery breathing. Max seems very happy, his gums are a nice and healthy pink color, and he is very comfortable. Hopefully he will remain stable so he can go home later in the day. Lastly I check in on “Igor”, a wild pigeon that was brought in after he had been hit by a vehicle. Igor has a fracture on the top of his skull and has lost the skin and feathers on the top of his head. Ashley, one of our animal care attendants, has been cleaning the wound daily and he is being treated with antibiotics and pain killers. Igor is eating well, seems comfortable, and the wound is Ashley and Igor beginning to heal. Now that the hospitalized pets are taken care of, it’s time to start appointments. First I get to see Atticus the labradoodle puppy. He is here for his final set of vaccines and a nail trim. Atticus gives lots of kisses and sits very still for his vaccines, as long as I promise him a cookie! Chi the Siamese kitten is in for his first local stories...local people...local pets

Cooper the chocolate lab has been limping and has a torn cranial cruciate ligament in her knee. Unfortunately she had surgery on her other knee and will need to go back to the specialist for a special surgery to repair it. I send off a referral form to the specialist and we take a blood test to check her liver and kidney function prior to surgery. Isabella the lionhead rabbit is a stray bunny that was brought into the local wildlife shelter and needs a check up and a nail trim. She is a healthy girl so she will foster with one of our staff members until we can find a home Danielle and our volunteer Michelle for her. with Isabella Heidi the guinea pig comes in because she is urinating more often than usual. We take a urine sample and send it to the lab to check for a bladder infection. Many more animals are seen before the appointments are finished. After a busy day of helping our furry friends, I head to my desk to return phone calls. I call owners that have called with questions, check on my patients, and let owners know test results that have come in from the laboratory. I also spend time on the computer reading and researching on new treatments to help me learn new ways to help our patients. It has been another fun and exciting day the veterinary hospital. Every day is different and unexpected and I can’t wait for tomorrow to begin. prm

Victory! Canadian Trauma Labs End Animal Use All trauma-training laboratories in Canada have stopped using animals. The last two institutions in the country using animals— the University of Sherbrooke and Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal—recently moved to nonanimal methods. Many Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) programs in Canada had previously involved cutting open anesthetized pigs and dogs to practice emergency medical procedures. The University of Sherbrooke was using 32 dogs a year. Since 2009, seven Canadian ATLS programs have replaced animal use with simulators developed specifically for trauma training. Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal, the University of Saskatchewan, Queen’s University, and McMaster University all used live animals until PCRM convinced the institutions to use nonanimal methods. Now all of the nearly two dozen ATLS programs in Canada use only nonanimal methods. “Canada now leads the way in educational and ethical standards for ATLS training,” says John Pippin, M.D., F.A.C.C., PCRM’s director of academic affairs. “There is no justification for using live animals. Nonanimal teaching methods offer a more effective—and more humane—way to teach lifesaving procedures.” Only five of the more than 240 ATLS programs in the United States continue to use live animals for training.

old days are busy for our Animal Protection Department here at the Edmonton Humane Society (EHS).
As the temperatures fall, the phones light up with calls from people concerned about the welfare of animals outside. Serving as an Animal Protection Peace Officer (APO) within the department is difficult, given the frustrations of seeing patterns of neglect that are easily avoidable, especially during the winter; nevertheless, 16

APOs have an unshakeable commitment to protecting and saving animal lives. I began working in EHS’s communications department at the beginning of November. For brevity’s sake, let me just say that the learning curve has been immense. Within days of starting, the temperatures dropped and heavy snow began falling, which got people at the shelter talking about the first big issue on which my work would focus: cold weather and animals at risk. local stories...local people...local pets
When the request came across the communications desk to write an article on the subject, I knew I needed an authoritative perspective. My colleague emailed Peace Officer Grey and asked her to come by the communications department, to provide us with her front-line perspective and experiences responding to calls about animals and cold weather. Part of me expected the office door to be darkened by a stony-faced law enforcement type. Precisely the opposite, Peace Officer Grey smiled and greeted us at the door before kneeling to meet my dog, Olive. Rather than sit in a chair, she sat on the office floor to let Olive climb into her lap. Olive curled into a comfortable position, her eyes growing heavy as Peace Officer Grey stroked behind her ears. Our conversation began on the topic of adequate shelters. Peace Officer Grey said that too often she has responded to calls where a shelter of sorts had been provided but was grossly inadequate. Some of the worst instances of improper shelter have involved pets locked in plastic

about an instance where a pet owner had strapped a tarp over a snowfilled chain-link dog run. The dog inside the run had been exposed to the elements for too long and was clearly in distress. Even though it was a thick-coated northern breed, the dog still needed an option to get out of the elements and off the snow. An adequate cold-weather shelter should be insulated, wind proof and have a flap door.
that felines are not adapted to cold climates and suffer quickly from frost bite and other cold-related issues. This is why cats often climb under the hoods of cars, in search of heat cast from an engine. During the winter, it’s always good practice to honk your horn or bang on the hood of your car before starting it, to alert any stowaways.

My conversation with Peace Officer Grey was an educational experience. It showed me our peace officers’ dedication to their role and their sincere commitment to animal welfare. Peace Officer Grey’s experiences opened my eyes to a recurring problem of distressed or at-risk animals that seems predicated more so upon a lack of understanding than meanspirited negligence. And while there is some intrinsic comfort in knowing the latter doesn’t prevail, it’s the lack of understandings – by virtue of its commonality – that causes companion animals the most harm. And this makes our peace officer’s role in the community one of vital importance. If you think there might be an

Many pet owners lay down blankets for their pets. But blankets take on moisture, freeze, and prevent an animal from staying warm. Animals need insulation that won’t freeze. A thick bed of straw, for instance, laid inside of a dog house will stay dry and allow an animal to burrow in it and preserve heat.

You may think that pets can withstand the cold better than we can, but in sub-zero temperatures they need a warm place to shelter, this doesn’t have to be your house. Even northern breed dogs need an escape from the bitter weather of winter. Provide outdoor dogs with a well insulated, heated dog house, or an area in your garage that will keep them warm and out of the cold. 18

recently adopted Hollywood who is a German Shepherd/Border Collie Cross who was sheltered by Sundance since Feb of 2012; and then fostered in a family home shortly after being rescued. Hollywood was approximately 7 months old when she was found malnourished and tied to a trampoline (her only shelter). Despite being left alone, outside, for much of the beginning of her life she socializes excellent with all dogs and people thanks to her amazing foster parent.

Hollywood and I have proven to be an excellent match for each other as we both have a lot of energy and enjoy going for runs or playing with the other dogs at the local dog park. Recently I have been training to complete a half Marathon in September and she is the best personal trainer you could ask for. When were not burning our energy off doing outdoors activities, you can usually find us snuggling together on the couch watching TV or reading books. It’s an amazing feeling to have adopted a rescue dog; they are the best dogs you could ask for as they are very affectionate and always aim to please you. Despite Hollywood’s rocky entrance into this world she has proven herself to be very resilient in keeping an excellent disposition and in allowing me into her life. ovember 2nd this year, was not just any Friday night, it was the date of the 8th Annual Canines & Cocktails dinner and auction, the proceeds of which went to benefit animals in need. The theme behind this year’s popular event was SCAR WARS. The room at the Palace Banquet and Conference Centre was futuristically staged out, and roaming around the room one could not miss the Storm Troopers and R2D2 who kindly donated their time from The 501st Legion. Luke Skywalker, brandishing his
light sabre, captured the room with his charm. The night blasted off with emcee Rob Christie, from “Rob & Audie in the Morning” at 96.3 Capital-FM, bringing the guests on their interplanetary evening to order when he shared the “low-down” on the evening events and then went on to Captain the stage throughout the evening. There were items galore to bid on in the silent auction from collectibles to Christmas fare and the live auction got underway when Gary Hanna and Ted Power,

who kindly donated their auctioneer services, took bids to new heights! A highlight for Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) during the event came from Paula Bissell and Shawn Molloy of Wabasca. Paula gave an inspirational speech about her SCARS experience, the Wabasca community and how “Apathy melts into compassion and action”. Compassion to the cause was overwhelming when Paula & Shawn presented SCARS with a cheque for $20,000!!!
Speaking with Jamie Hunter, Vice President of SCARS, she expressed her extreme gratitude to everyone who donated their time and efforts to pull the evening together.
