Barrhead Animal Rescue Society (BARS) Why hello there. My name is Boots and I am a 4mths old. My mom is a Shepherd X, but I seem to have some Lab in me as well. I am a very obedient boy and would do best in a home with older children as the little ones still scare me a bit.
Callie is what they call me. I am a 1-1.5yr old Shep/Collie X. I am a very social and love playing with other dogs & humans alike. I would do best in a home where my new owners can set firm boundaries and teach me how to become the best dog I can be!
I’m a 5yr old Lab/Great Pyrenees X named Chewy. I am not sure why, but it could be the hunk of wood that I’m always carrying around... or maybe it’s because I allow my lady friend Callie to always chew on my ear! I am great on leash and would love a canine companion.

escue runs on the efforts of the people that are involved. This is no different at Rescue For Life. There are the obvious individuals involved, the ones who go out and feed and find and bring in the dogs and cats to the Rescue. Of course there are the Foster Homes too, without them, there would be no way of taking these animals in at all. The Foster Homes are often the heart 8

of the rescue, providing shelter, and love and care, training and socializing the animals that may never have experienced anything like that before.

There are other people though, that many don’t think about, and that certainly aren’t seen but without them, everything would be so much more difficult to manage. The ones that do any number of errands, phone calls, manage emails, help out at fundraising events, adoption days, taking animals to and from vet appointments, the lifeblood in a way of a Rescue Group.
Jane is a tower of strength for us and as we have heard her say any number of times, “I may not be able to take any foster dogs, but I sure can get in there and do something to help out!”.
At Rescue For Life we are very lucky indeed to have people like this and in particular, one very dedicated woman. A Jane of all trades! Jane Murphy is our very enthusiastic and willing secret weapon, or as we call her our “miracle”. Need a place to store things? Jane will do that. Need some donated items picked up? Jane will do that. Need someone to sit and cuddle a young dog just coming out of

Yes, Jane you certainly do. We know why you do it, or rather WHO you do it for. You have helped us to save so many of those precious, furry lives. I’m Afina. I’m about 11mths old and will be about 45lbs full grown. I was rescued with sarcoptic mange but I am healthy now. I am super sweet, fairly submissive and great with everyone.
I’m Bronson. I am full of energy and a happy boy now that I’ve had reconstructive face surgery. I am a Shepherd X around 18mths old and I love other dogs, cats, and kids too.

Hello! My name is Alison and I am a 1yr old Golden Lab X. I was found as a stray in Northern Alberta. I don’t like loud noises and can be a little shy, but I get along well with other dogs. I’ve been through a lot in my life, and would love to find a home where I can be loved.

“Everything starts with someone’s daydream” This was the vision for the implementation of Kittyhawk Animal Foundation. Kittyhawk was started in remembrance of a long-time equine companion; Kittyhawk. Registered as an Alberta charity on September 29th, 2005. The object of Kittyhawk is to educate the members of the public relative to animal health, provide assistance programs for animals and supply charitable benefits to animals as a whole. Its focus is to assist Edmonton and area animal rescue groups in finding permanent homes for the thousands of unwanted or neglecte animals that would otherwise be euthanized. Kittyhawk Animal Foundation received federal charitable status in May, 2007 and through an endowment fund,
created by the founders annually distributes funds to local area rescue groups for their ongoing efforts to save the lives of animals. Kittyhawk Animal foundation invites applications on an annual basis from animal rescue groups in the greater Edmonton area who meet the necessary qualifications. Funding is available on May 31st of each year.
Sundance Canine Rescue Our Vision is to Provide a safe haven for all of Alberta’s abused, neglected and unwanted canines. When their Momma’s gone... What would you do if you found orphaned or injured young? Submitted by Wildlife Rehabilitation Society Of Edmonton
Ducklings The majority of waterfowl (Mallards, Goldeneyes, Teals) are raised by the female bird and the male is not part of the family unit. Typically, mallards, teal and other “Dabbling Ducks” will nest away from water and when the eggs hatch they will lead their ducklings to water.
tively know they must hide. The group will often scatter in tall grass or any hiding place. The family will regroup when the female feels safe enough to return to the area and will start gently calling the ducklings to her.
Goldeneye and some other “Diving Ducks” nest in tree cavities. When the ducklings hatch they must climb out of the nest hole and jump to the ground. Since the ducklings are quite small, it is an incredible journey to leave the nest site and find the safety of a lake. If something startles the female, such as a predator, she has several techniques for protecting or diverting attention away from her vulnerable young.
Another trick she has is to simply fly off, leaving the ducklings to scatter and hide. She is not abandoning them, she simply does what her instincts tell her to do depending on the situation. Unfortunately, ducklings fall prey to many predators, even our own dogs and cats. It is a perilous journey from hatching and becoming an adult duck - fewer than 20% make it to adulthood. Ducklings become separated from their mothers for many reasons, if you find orphaned ducklings please call the wildlife hotline.
One technique is the “broken wing” trick. She will very effectively, and noisily, attract attention to herself by limping and dragging a wing and walking away from where her ducklings are. When the predator attempts to catch an easy meal she will fly off. In the meantime, the ducklings instinc-

Baby Hares The first litters of hares are born from late April to early May. It is customary for the young to be left unattended while the mother forages for food. Typically she will only return twice a day to feed them as her scent attracts predators. If you come across a baby hare, do not assume it is an orphan and please do not move it unless: • It is obviously injured. • It is in an inappropriate place, such as a parking lot. • You have seen the mother or other siblings dead. If injured, please contact our wildlife hotline. Please also contact us before attempting to move any baby hares. If you are advised to bring it to our shelter, please try to minimize stress by: • Keep the baby hare(s) in a card board box that has a lid and ventila tion holes. • Keeping the car radio off and talk ing to a whisper/minimum. • Minimize handling, if possible only handle to put inside transpor tation box. • Keep away from family pets. • Please do not attempt to feed the hare(s).
Baby Birds Nestlings (naked or partially feathered chicks): If a nestling is found on the ground, the first thing to do is look for a nest it may have fallen out of. In the event that no nest is found that has the same species and similar sized young, the most important thing to do is to keep the bird(s) warm. At this stage it is unable to thermo regulate and if its body temperature decreases too much it will become too weak to eat or digest food. local stories...local people...local pets
If a nest and young are found on the ground, having fallen out of a tree, keep the babies warm and either repair the nest or replace it using a margarine tub. Using a margarine tub poke holes in the bottom to allow for water drainage, place it securely back into the tree, return the babies, and then monitor for the return of the parent(s). If the parents do not return after a couple of hours, please contact our wildlife hotline. If a tree is cut down and a cavity nest is discovered with young still inside, you can attempt to reconstruct the nest site as best as possible - preferably using the same nest cavity. You can then monitor for the return of the parents from a distance. Once adult birds are feeding young they are very loyal to a nest site and will generally tolerate even this level of disturbance. * Please note: Many people believe that leaving your scent on the baby will cause the parents to reject it, this is not true. Birds have a very poor sense of smell and this is not a concern. Fledglings (wing and tail feathers developed, out of the nest and hopping about): Many bird species spend several days practicing before they are able to fly. It is at this time in their lives when most well-intentioned humans bring them to us. If the bird is obviously injured (i.e. bleeding, dragging a leg/wing), we do ask that you contact our wildlife hotline. If there are no obvious injuries, observe the bird from a distance and watch if other bird(s) attend or call to it. If it is in imminent danger (i.e. being stalked by a cat) it is all right to pick up the bird and place it in a tree out of reach. Watch closely as it only takes a few seconds for an adult to feed the young bird and this can easily be missed. Please do not feed the young one as it is their hunger calls that tell the adult where they are.
Deer Fawns Fawns that are found alone should not be captured unless obviously injured as it is normal for the mother to leave her young for extended periods of time while she browses for food. Newborn fawns have no scent, so that along with camouflage protects them from predators in the first critical days of life. They spend much of their first two weeks lying quietly, waiting for the doe to return to nurse. Mum does leave her fawn alone for the majority of the day as this behavior ensures she does not drawn attention to the fawn. The doe is generally within hearing distance of the fawn.
Baby Squirrels Unlike young hares and fawns, young squirrels are not left alone for long periods of time. If no parent returns to collect a young squirrel within a couple of hours, please call our wildlife hotline as it may need to be rescued. If the nest site has been destroyed, due to storms etc., the mother will move them. Red squirrels have multiple nest sites and regularly move their young from nest to nest. If you have found a squirrel nest in an inconvenient place (i.e. attic), we ask people if possible to wait for the young to leave the nest (at 6-9 weeks of age), at which time any entry points can be blocked off after checking that none are still inside. If you have found one or more young squirrels that are orphaned please do not attempt to feed them, call our wildlife hotline.

Bow Valley SPCA My name is Shasta and I have called the Bow Valley SPCA home for over 2 years. At first I was very afraid of other dogs and it took me a while to learn to be comfortable with different people and situations. My DNA was tested and turns out I am a Boxer/Great Dane X. Lost & Found

I was laying in bed thinking about the next day, and slotting all the pegs into their appropriate holes so I could get everything accomplished I needed to do. I certainly wasn’t ready for what happened. Morning came quickly and I found myself on the way to our adoption centre to clean and say my “Hello’s” to my four-leggers awaiting adoption. It was the usual frenzy of activity, cleaning, laundry, and occasionally tripping over the odd cat who loved to circle my feet like a shark around it’s prey.

Then came the phone call. The Animal Care & Control Centre calling to inform me that one of our adopted kittens, Jessy, was in their care. I can’t totally recollect the whole conversation as a million thoughts and questions were swirling in my head, but none brought any resolution to how Jessy, found miles away from his home, ended up in their facility. After I hung up the phone, I realized that perhaps this wasn’t just about Jessy, but about Lilly, his sister, too. Was she home safe and sound, or was she still “out there somewhere”?

I was consumed the rest of the day trying to sort out how Jessy, an eight month old kitten, had wandered from south Edmonton all the way northeast to city limits in three days. It didn’t matter how I looked at it nothing made sense. My phone calls to the adopted pet parents went unanswered, and as the day progressed the level of my frustration and concern continued to build. The next day, I drove over to the home hoping to see Lilly and receive the news that it had all been a terrible accident. That wasn’t the case. I stood in disbelief as I learned that days prior Jessy and Lilly had been driven out close to where Jessy was found and “dumped” by another member of the family. I, as a rescuer, felt deflated, responsible, angst, after all I had screened these people, done the home check and approved the adoption. Now I was questioning my ability while being whipped by the thoughts of what my ineptitude had opened these poor kittens up to. local stories...local people...local pets
Jessy and Lilly were sweet kittens from day one. They were born to an abandoned cat who came into our care from a rural pound. We nurtured them as babies and brought their mother back to health with view of them all going on to their forever homes to a life of love and security – a fairytale ending every rescuer and rescue organization dreams of. The rest of day two was spent printing, posters and recruiting volunteers to poster the small residential area, surrounded by miles of open country, where Jessy was found. Jessy was safe, however we knew Lilly still needed our help. The next day went off without a hitch, we left posters, searched, and talked to people when we could. Now it was an emotionally cruel waiting game. Three days could have been three months in my upside-down world, where it seemed hope was the only thing fueling my existence. Then it came, the phone call that changed everything - Lilly had been found. The floodgates holding back my pent up emotions opened and I cried tears of joy and relief as I heard the news. Nothing else mattered at that moment other than Lilly was safe.

Both Jessy and Lilly are back with us and are looking to start their life again in a home that will respect, value and cherish them. I have learned from this ordeal that we can only do our very best when judging homes and that we’re allowed not to be right 100% of the time. I would like to mention to all potential adopters to please understand the adoption process from a rescue point of view. We may ask questions you don’t feel are appropriate, we may make decisions that you don’t agree with, but at the end of the day, it’s about the animals we have rescued, nurtured and love and being able to go to bed at night and sleep without any regrets. prm

Social Networking Brings Canadian Trap-Neuter-Return Groups Together T
rap-Neuter-Return (TNR) has been practiced for years in many cities in the United States. It is the alternative feral cat management program to trap & kill or trap and remove.
Community feral street cats are trapped, altered and returned to their home environment with the assistance of a caregiver. By reducing the number of offspring born to feral cats there is an eventual decline in their numbers. In Canada TNR is fast becoming a movement and organizations can be found across the country. Thanks to social media and an incredibly devoted group of administrators “Canada’s TNR Network – 4 organizations & colony caretakers” was born as a Facebook group. It is a place where ideas are shared, questions are asked, and opportunities and challenges can be discussed with people from all walks of life that are committed to seeing feral cat euthanasia numbers reduced in our shelters and pounds. pilot sites in 2012 to substantiate their claim that TNR does equal a reduction in the number of feral community cats. They have been TNR’ing industrial sites since 2009 and in some colonies have seen up to a 40% reduction and more in others. They advocate for spay/neuter, licensing, identification and that cat owners keep their cats contained to their property. There are many dynamics at play when it comes to feral cats, so they ask that people keep an open mind to this somewhat relatively alternative concept to euthanization. t is suggested that if you are looking for permanent relief for dog allergies symptoms you need to go see a veterinary dermatologist. Here you can find the cause for sneezing in dogs, general allergies in dogs and most of your dog skin problems. People medicines such as Benadryl and Claritin will only provide temporary relief of the signs and your dog will still be uncomfortable. In some cases the dermatologist may be able to make up allergy shots if they find out the cause of your dogs allergies. You should not make any diet changes or treat your pet with any medication without strict guidance from a veterinarian. Changing the dog’s diet without the guidance from a veterinarian can make it more difficult for them to isolate the cause of the allergies. It’s entirely possible that the causes may involve specific foods. This requires an extensive food trial. However it could be environmental agents that are causing your dog allergies symptoms which would require further allergy testing. On your own you could try hydroxizine or atarax for some relief. Do Not use prednisone, it is not the greatest it’s a steroid and have several side effects. You can also try eliminating the normal protein source with another protein like fish or venison. It takes up to 2 to 3 months of a diet change to tell if there is any effect.
Irritant contact dermatitis occurs when the dog’s skin is exposed to intensely irritating chemicals like the sap in poison ivy or road salt. What are the symptoms of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis? Lesions occur on the areas of skin that are sparsely haired and exposed to the offending cause. Areas like the back of the paws, abdomen, muzzle, and lips. The affected areas are usually very red, have small bumps or blister-like lesions, and itch like crazy. Also in irritant contact dermatitis may occur. The key to managing these dog allergies symptoms is the obvious removing or restricting of exposure to any allergen or contact irritant in the pet’s environment. If you’re not able to do this, then using fatty acids, antihistamines, biotin, and topical shampoos can at least control the itching. As a rule, for any pet suspected of having an allergy problem that could include an allergic contact component, we recommend: Glass or stainless steel food and water bowls, cleaned and rinsed well daily Hypoallergenic detergents for the pet’s bedding
Allergic contact dermatitis usually shows up in dogs as a hypersensitivity reaction to particular molecules in your pet’s environment. Irritant contact dermatitis happens when the skin is exposed to noxious substances in the environment. The symptoms and biologic mechanisms in these two disease structures are closely similar and are often discussed together.
Routine hypoallergenic shampoos for the pet to remove any allergens
Allergic contact dermatitis is a rare disease, which occurs when an animal’s skin overreacts to certain small molecules in the environment. Substances, which can cause allergic contact dermatitis in dogs include some antibiotics applied to the skin, metals such as nickel, materials like rubber or wool and chemicals such as dyes and carpet deodorizers.
Hopefully in the not to distant future there will be an easier fix for all allergies in dogs. prm
