June‛s Cover Model Hi, I’m Flower because I’m just that pretty! My brothers and I are about 10 weeks old now, but we came to SNAP at just 5 days old. We are very lucky pups to be taken in and bottle-fed, it’s a LOT of work...after all there are 9 of us! SNAP thinks we were worth it! There are three of us still looking for extra special homes that are familiar with our breed. We are spayed/neutered, dewormed, tattooed & have our first set of vaccinations. We are going to be huge dogs and they expect us to one day weigh in at 150+ pounds.

That’s me, I’m a gorgeous German Shepherd X, around 7 months old and already neutered. I am very friendly and playful. I’m Panda, a registered purebred, neutered, Border Collie. I am only 6 months old and a very sweet, handsome boy. I like other dogs, but I’m not big on sharing my food. I am a working dog by nature and really need an active home that will provide a lot of exercise.

My name is Melissa and my baby Marty and I were picked up on our volunteer’s last spay run. I had nine puppies, but only one was found with me. Sadly, the local children took the rest home, although they are still too young to leave me. I had no home, but scavenged to survive. I am malnourished, and have very little milk for my baby. Marty is only about four weeks old, but fortunately he is already eating solid food. I am just so thrilled to be living in this kind of luxury! When I first came here there was a full food bowl and water dish, a doghouse with a soft bed and gentle people to love me. A vast improvement from the abandoned trailer where I had to have my puppies. Good thing we got out right away, the trailer is in the process of being demolished. I love people, especially children. They recommend a cat-free home for me, though I have not actually been tested with them. I will be spayed as soon as my milk dries up. I am such a lovely natured girl and deserve a very special home. For more information please call Jodi between 9am-9pm (403) 343-2282.

Nieko here, I am an AkitaLab X. I am from a Kansas shelter and around 4 years old. Rumor is I am a very friendly and happy boy with excellent manners. I am neutered and ready for my new family to find me and take me home forever. Hello everyone! My name is Abby and I am a 1 yr old, spayed, very friendly, Collie X. They say I have awesome potential and I am eager to please. I would prefer to be an only fur child (without any canine or feline siblings). I came all the way from Kansas.

My name is Keyoto and I am a purebred American Eskimo. I am approximately 1 year old and have been neutered. I am quite friendly and really like other dogs. I hope to find my new home soon.

My name is SNAP and my story is sad. My owner surrendered me because he was moving and could not take me to his new home. I did not do anything wrong though. I am litter trained, friendly, well behaved and desperately looking for love. I am not really fond of dogs but seem ok with other cats. I am looking for a family who will love and value me for the treasure I am. Marbles here! I am around 12 weeks old. I also have 5 litter mates named Wallace, Sash, Gingey, Scrappy and Oliver. We are all fuzzy and fun, but I’m the prettiest little thing ever. I was quite reserved when I first came in to SHARES but I have come a long way in a short time and now I’m looking for my very own home.

My name is Balou and I’m a large, very affectionate, male, from the local pound. I don’t mind other cats but don’t care much for dogs at all. I absolutely adore people and love to get in as close as I can! I am neutered and litter trained. Remember folks: Cats Rule and Dogs Drool!

My name is Buddy and that’s just what I am! I came from the pound, sadly my owner is not well and just cannot keep me in his life. I am quiet, well behaved and good with dogs of all sizes. However, I do protect my food from other dogs and like to be fed separately. I take direction well and like to please. I am well behaved in the car and good in the house. I am a bit larger than most Border Collies and very smart. I am also pretty quiet and really looking for a new family to love me. I am a young Collie cross and weigh in at about 40lbs. pet rescue magazine

You know how guys just seem to get better looking with age? Well, that’s me! My name is Calvin and I am 79yrs old and oh so handsome!!! You would never guess my age either, as I am full of life. I am neutered and a total sweetheart. I travel well in the car and seem fairly well behaved on leash. I get along fine with small dogs and I was not really interested in the cat at the pound. I am just a big friendly guy who needs a great home to retire in.

Hello! My name is Hobbs and I am between 1-2 years old. I am already neutered and like other medium to large dogs I seem to think the smaller ones are chew toys. And don’t get me started on the whole cat thing....I’m pretty sure they are lunch. I do love my people though, even the little guys! I know the basic commands and travel well in the car. local stories...local people...local pets

Chance the cat makes great recovery after being covered in kerosene Thanks to the goodness and compassion of many volunteers who work endlessly to help abandoned and abused animals, the following story can be told. It could be your neighbour, your co-worker, even your postman, the army of volunteers is growing to protect and shelter many species of animals against abuse and neglect. Chance, a black and grey tabby named for his narrow escape, was rescued after he was found soaked in kerosene. Jean Hoolahan of 4 Paws Animal Rescue believes that someone dipped Chance in kerosene in order to set him on fire but miraculously he got away. After he arrived at 4 Paws he was promptly taken off to be bathed with dish detergent before his matted coat was shaved off and he was smeared with vegetable oil to protect his skin. We are happy to report that since that eventful day 2 months ago, Chance has been recovering well in the care of 4 Paws and their vet, but it is yet to be determined when he will be available for adoption. If you would like to help with this little guy’s care, donations can be made via pay pal on line at www.4pawsrescue.ca Based in Lamont, Alberta, 4 Paws a sanctuary for homeless and abused animals. local stories...local people...local pets

Thousands of years ago, we humans formed a covenant with our companion animals. We wanted them to live with us and to share our lives. Because of this our ‘pets’ lost most of their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became our responsibility to feed and care for them. While the animals have kept their end of the bargain, we humans largely have not. ~ Unknown

Hello, my name is Doug the Degu, I’m 2 years old, and I’m sort of the independent type. I decided that I no longer wanted to live with my son, so I am looking for a new human family to bring me home and befriend me! I love to run on my wheel and take treats from your hand, and dust baths are my favorite thing to do! I can even bring my cage and accessories to my new home! If you’d like to give a lonely guy like me a loving home, don’t hesitate to call!

Hi, my name is Trix and the goofy guy beside me is my brother, Rolo. We’re 7 months old, and we’re ready to move out and make a life for ourselves! We are looking to rent a place with a loving family for the next 5-8 years. In exchange for housing, food, hugs, and maintenance we will provide you with many cuddles, much love, and unlimited entertaining antics. If you think you can give two young bachelors a place to live, and a family to love, please give us a call!

The McDonald Family Animal Rescue

O

ur family has been actively rescuing and re-homing animals for about ten years; however, our involvement in animal rights began long before that. Our family pets have always been rescues. Even the ants that lived in our yard were protected from any little feet that were tempted to stomp on them while playing in our yard. Our family believes that all animals have the right to live without fear and pain, and we do our best to live up to that ideal. We are vegetarians. We use cruelty-free products and clothes and accessories made from man made materials. It is not possible to help all the animals that need us but we do what we can with our limited funds and our little house. Our adoption process is very thorough, as anyone who has adopted from us will tell you, and it is very satisfying matching up the right people and animals. Our animals are not available on a first come, first serve basis; we want to make sure that their next home is their last home, and that they will be healthy and happy for the rest of their days. We have re-homed chickens and ducks, cats and dogs, hedgehogs and chinchillas, geckos and snakes. The list goes on and on. We have kept in contact with many of our adopters and often get pictures. Our goal is to have a full fledged animal sanctuary where animals can come and live out the rest of their lives away from pain and suffering. Of course, we will still be involved in re-homing pets as there will always be animals looking to be part of a loving family. We live wonderful, busy lives surrounded by animals that are looking for permanent, loving homes. Please consider adopting an animal from us or another rescue rather than going to a pet store or a breeder. It may be one of the most rewarding things you ever do. In the meantime, we would like to introduce you to a few special animals looking for new homes.

Our Wish List

An Apple A Day

If you would like to help out our rescue, these are some of the things we need: Hi there, my name is Neko, and I’m SO excited that you’re paying attention to me! I’m a sweet girl, and I’m tired of not having my own family to lavish me with the love I deserve! I do really well with my litter box, I’m well behaved when I’m out of the cage…but still, nobody has taken me home! I’m only one year old, so I have a lot of time left to be your loving companion… and I may be a mixed breed bunny, but that makes me unique! People always laugh at my ears, because one sticks up and one falls down, but I think they’re just jealous that their ears aren’t as cute! Oh, won’t one of you kind humans come and take me home, please?

We would also really love a quality shop-vac and a complete dog run. Monetary doGood day! My name is Ruby, and I know everybody says this, but…nobody understands me! My first owner expected me to be cuddly like a kitten, and I didn’t live up to her expectations, and my second home didn’t consider me important enough to take along with them when they moved! I’ve had two different homes, and I’m only 2 years old…I’m so cute and pretty though, I don’t know why I’m still here! I admit, I’m a bit huffy when you first take me out, but that’s because I’m a hedgehog! That’s what we do! All I need is someone with a bit of patience, because I’m really a sweet girl. Once I know that I’m safe, I love to unroll and snuffle around on your lap, eat mealworms, and burrow into your shirt. I’m a good girl that loves to explore and give kisses; I just need somebody that accepts me on my own terms, who doesn’t mind taking the time to become my friend! I even have my wheel, house, toys, food dishes, and a few meals-to-go packed and ready to move out with me…I just need to find that special someone! local stories...local people...local pets

arvoviruses are a large group of viruses and most mammals seem to have their own type of parvovirus. The canine parvovirus will affect most members of the dog family such as domestic dogs, wolves, coyotes and foxes. Parvovirus is a small virus consisting of a single strand of DNA surrounded by a protein coat and is especially hardy in the environment. The virus is considered to be ubiquitous in our environment which means it is everywhere. Sooner or later, almost all dogs will be exposed to the virus. Whether a dog gets visibly ill from the virus seems to depend mostly on the immune experience of the dog (usually a puppy or adolescent dog is most vulnerable) and how many viral particles the dog is exposed to. When puppies are born they have a very immature immune system and get most of their immunity to diseases from the antibodies they ingest from their mother as a result of nursing. These antibodies will wear off slowly during the first 4 months of the pup’s life. The amount and quality of antibodies each pup receives depends on how well the pup nurses and the quality of the mother’s antibodies. As time goes on, these maternal antibodies will wane and the pups own immune system will start to mature, so it can produce its own continued on page 10

ot much is known about a small number of Edmonton dogs who every 3 months attend the blood donor clinic at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) collection site. These dogs are truly unsung heroes to pet guardians whose animals face veterinary critical care.

increasingly important role in the life support of an animal facing critical veterinary care, is transfusion therapy. It has helped save the lives of dogs combating many conditions such as Parvovirus, or treating acute blood volume loss, and as preventative measures in routine surgeries for dogs with bleeding disorders. NAIT’s Animal Health Technology Department is working with The Canadian Animal Blood Bank (CABB) to help assist in canine blood collection, while providing additional opportunity for student learning. The blood they collect is transported to CABB’s head office in Winnipeg, where it is processed into different blood components, stored, then shipped out as required to veterinarians across Canada. Whether a veterinarian chooses whole blood or component therapy (the process of transfusing only a portion of the blood components), many people whose pets face transfusions have to be grateful to the pet guardians that volunteer their dogs to participate in a donor program. The process of our canine friends giving blood is quick and painless with the average time being 5 minutes to take 450mls. There is no need for any sedation or anesthetic and the collection process does not affect the dog’s health. During the past decade the use of blood products in treating critically ill dogs has drastically grown. Currently there is a high demand for donors and waiting lists for the supply of blood from CABB are growing. At present more dogs are desperately needed. Ideally a donor dog is fully vaccinated, 1-8 years old, weighs more than 50lbs (but not overweight), even tempered and in good general health. If your dog is a hero at heart and you have time to participate, please consider the importance of the gift you can make. If you are interested in learning more about the blood donor program at NAIT please call Shauna at 491-1324 or email: animalbloodbank@nait.ab.ca for more information. Is Your Dog Driving You Barking Mad? Take A Walk In Their Paws

Nicole Johnston CPDT, Is the owner and a certified trainer at Dogspaw Daycare and Training Centre, Edmonton

Dear Nicole: Thanks for your interesting articles. I have a question for you. I simply can’t shut my dog up and it’s driving me and my neighbours insane. What do you suggest I do? Some dogs get extremely worked up when visitors ring the doorbell, or when dogs walk by the house. Some spaniels and terriers bark at the drop of a hat. And our good friend Larry Labrador will bark whenever a leaf falls from a tree three blocks away. Barking is as characteristically doggy as wagging a tail or burying a bone. It would be inane and inhumane to try to stop your dog from barking altogether: “You’ll never bark in this town again!” After all, some barking is extremely useful. My dogs are much more efficient than the doorbell and much more convincing than a burglar alarm. The goal then, is to teach dogs normally to be calm and quiet but to sound the alarm when intruders enter your property. local stories...local people...local pets

The barking problem may be resolved to our advantage by management and education: first, immediately reduce the frequency of barking before we all go insane; and second, teach your dog to “Woof” and “Shush” on cue. The easiest way to immediately reduce woof-frequency is by exclusively feeding your dog from hollow chewtoys. Dogs bark the most right after their owners leave home for the day. Each evening weigh out and moisten your dog’s kibble or raw diet for the following day. Squish the gooey food into hollow chewtoys (Kong products and sterilized bones) and put them in the freezer overnight. In the morning, give your dog some frozen stuffed chewtoys. Your dog will spend well over an hour extricating his breakfast from the chewtoys. And if your dog is busying himself with chewtoys, he will be lying down quietly! Do not leave an excessive barker outdoors. Yard-bound dogs are exposed to many more disturbances and their barks more easily penetrate the neighborhood. Leave your dog comfortably in a single room (away from the street) with a radio playing to mask outside disturbances. If you have been leaving your dog outside because he soils or destroys the house, housetrain, kennel train and chewtoy train your dog so he may enjoy indoor comforts when you are away from home. Teach “Woof” and “Shush” On Cue: It is easier to teach your dog to shush when he is calm and focused. Therefore, teaching your dog to “Woof” on

cue is the first step in “Shush” training, thus enabling you to teach “Shush” at your convenience, and not at inconvenient times when the dog decides to bark. Moreover, teaching “Shush” is now much easier because your dog is not barking uncontrollably—barking was your idea! Station an accomplice outside the front door. Say “Woof” (or “Speak,” or “Alert”), which is the cue for your assistant to ring the bell. Praise your dog profusely when he barks (prompted by the doorbell); maybe even bark along with your dog. After a few good woofs, say “Shush” and then waggle a tasty food treat in front of his nose. Your dog will stop barking as soon as he sniffs the treat because it is impossible to sniff and woof simultaneously. Praise your dog as he sniffs quietly, and then offer the treat. Repeat this routine a dozen or so times and your dog will learn to anticipate the doorbell ringing whenever you ask him to speak. Eventually your dog will bark after your request but before the doorbell rings, meaning that your dog has learned to bark on command. Similarly, your dog will learn to anticipate the likelihood of sniffables following your “Shush” request. You have then taught your dog both to speak and shush on cue. Over repeated “Woof” and “Shush” trials, progressively increase the length of required shush-time before offering a food reward—at first just two seconds, then three, then five, eight, twelve,

antibodies to the things it encounters. Dogs get parvovirus by the fecal oral route, that is, the dog must ingest feces which contain the virus. There is about a 3-7 day incubation period before the pup first shows signs of illness. The virus gets into the bone marrow, where it destroys white blood cells. White blood cells help the body to fight off infection, and if they are depleted, the animal is very vulnerable. The virus also destroys the lining of the small intestines, making them unable to absorb nutrients properly. The result is a dog with vomiting and diarrhea, with an eroded small intestinal tract. The normal flora of the gut may then be able to get into the animal’s blood stream, causing septicaemia or a bacterial invasion of many parts of the body. All this while the dog has a very poor ability to fight infections due to a low white blood cell count. Extreme fluid loss and dehydration can also lead to shock and death. To treat parvovirus requires intensive care with intravenous fluids, antibiotics, anti-nausea medication and may require other supportive care such as potassium supplementation, transfusions, dextrose, and maintaining normal body temperature. Since there are no good anti-viral medications for this disease, treatment is mostly supportive. The dog is continually monitored since there are many possible complications from this disease. 10

pet rescue magazine

June 2007

The diagnosis of parvovirus infection can be made by checking for parvovirus in the feces. However recent vaccination can interfere with the test and dogs which may have the virus may not be shedding the virus at the time of testing. Alternatively, the number of white blood cells can be measured. Remember however, diseases are dynamic and change continuously, and a dog with parvovirus infection can have a normal white blood cell count one day can have very few white cells the next. Whether a dog develops clinic parvovirus signs seems to be age related. Since the virus is ubiquitous in the environment, dogs seem to be exposed to the virus quite often. Once they are about 1 year of age or older, there is a large reduction in the number of cases seen, likely due to immune responses developing to repeated small exposures. The best defence against parvovirus is vaccination. There are many types of vaccines on the market, some consisting of killed virus and others with modified live virus. Recommendations on frequency of vaccination change often, however younger dogs should initially be vaccinated starting at 8 weeks of age and then every 3-4 weeks for a total of 2 to 3 vaccinations. Older dogs with an unknown vaccination status should be vaccinated and then boostered in 1 month. This depends on many factors including the risk of exposure and lifestyle of the dog. Remember, that vaccinations are not always 100% effective in all circumstances. Vaccinated dogs can still get parvovirus infections, although they generally will not get as ill as unvaccinated dogs, and often respond more quickly to treatments. See your veterinarian to tailor a vaccination protocol specific to your situation.

At times I may be a little rough around the edges but I am showing improvement. I am a very lovable character and show my affection passionately. Please call (780) 471-2275.

TA-DA.....Here I am with my new and improved face. My name is Kaylee and it has been a long hard road for me, but I am now 100% and dying to meet my new family. As you can see I had to have my eye removed as it was damaged beyond repair. It causes me no problems at all, and think of what a conversation starter it will be at the dog park! I am crate trained, and have never messed inside. I LOVE kids, and am good with most other dogs. I am a 4 year old girl with an amazing, gentle soul. Come and meet me soon. Please call (780) 963-6134. My name is Thumbelina and I am the runt of my litter....that means I have to be the most demanding and loudest so I can get my fair share! I want to be a princess when I get big so I will always be treated like royalty. I came from a northern Alberta pound where my 7 littermates and I were going to be....ah....well you don’t need to know about that stuff, what’s important is that I’m a perfect little girl full of puppy trouble looking for a good home. I am about 9 weeks old and I’m not scared to tell you how important I am. Now pick me up darn it!!! Or call (780) 675-3018 Chewy is my name and fun is my game! So there I was, out for my afternoon walk along the highway in the middle of nowhere...thankfully I was picked-up by a kind man. No one came forward to claim me, so I am looking for a forever home that will love me forever. I am a large guy and love people. I’m not sure on my breed but everyone says I am absolutely the most handsome dog around! Call (780) 963-6134. My name is Jacob and I am a Collie X. I am not quite a year old yet so I have lots of puppy energy that I will need help burning off. I am eager to please and once I learn some basic obedience I will make a wonderful off-leash park buddy. I came from a northern AB pound and I love everything and every one! Call (780) 675-3018.

Tyson here....Well I’m the third dog in a week to show up at my foster moms house, actually the neighbors. I was trying to play with the new little lambs, apparently that is not cool. I am a very nice guy, if you want more information on me call (780) 963-6134. Barking Mad Continued from page 9

twenty, and so on. By alternating instructions to woof and shush, the dog is praised and rewarded for barking on request and for shushing on request. Remember, always speak softly when instructing your dog to shush, and reinforce your dog’s silence with whisperpraise. The more softly you speak, the more your dog will be inclined to pay attention and listen (and therefore, not bark). Teach Your Dog When to Bark: Invite a dozen people for afternoon coffee to teach your dog when, and when not, to bark. Instruct your visitors (some with dogs) to walk by the house a number of times before ringing the doorbell. When the first person walks by the house, it will take all of your attention to keep your dog shushed. But persevere: it will be easier when the same person walks by the second time, and again easier on the third pass by. Eventually your dog will habituate and will no longer alert to the same person’s presence in the street. Profusely praise your dog and offer treats for silent vigilance. Repeat reinforcement for quiet vigilance several times on subsequent passes by. But when the visitor starts up the garden path, eagerly and urgently say “Speak! Speak! Speak!” Praise your dog when he woofs, and then instruct him to sit and shush at the front door while you welcome the visitor. If your dog exuberantly barks and bounces at this point, simply wait until he sits and shushes and then praise and offer a treat. Have the visitor leave and come back a number of times. Eventually, your dog will greet him by sitting in silence. This procedure becomes easier with each new visitor. Your dog soon learns to watch passersby in silence and to give voice when they step on your property, but to sit and shush when they are invited indoors—a trained neighborhood watchdog, which even non-dog-owning neighbors will welcome on the street where they live.

Smokey the bear? Nope, I’m Smokey the cat! Clearly from my picture you can see I belong on the catwalk, posing for the camera with all my fans hanging on my every meow! I am a DSH, grey, 3-5yr old male. I will talk your ear off...I have so many important things to say! I love ear scratches, belly rubs and don’t even get me started on toys, you would think I was a kitten! Pssst...for a big “Tom Cat” they say I am very affectionate and playful but don’t tell anyone it will ruin my image. If you have ear scratches and belly rubs then I’m your guy!

Speedy here...

Everyone just loves my smile! My name is Charlie and I am a 3-5yr old, neutered male. I am a Husky X and just can’t get enough walks! I’ll go 5 times a day if I can, depending on how many friendly dog walkers come in! I also love to make friends with new dogs in the adoption room. I’m not sure what I’m like with little children but I sure love hanging with older kids and adults. I would do wonderful on a home outside of the city so I could have special little Charlie adventures all the time. If you think I might be the guy for you, give us a call!

Love Ryan, Jaclyn, Shannon, Christine, Jesse, Shayla, Nash, Tyler, Ashley, Netisha, Sophie, Liam, Pepper & Bailey I am an Umbrella Cockatoo and they call me Zeus. I am very shy but still such an affectionate fellow! It takes me a little time to warm up, but once I do I have oodles and oodles of love to offer. I like to stay active, play, keep people laughing and be vocal. I LOVE running around on the floor exploring and discovering new things to play with! I would be happiest in a home where there are no other pets, and I seem to prefer the company of women. I will be a loving, affectionate and fun companion to someone who has time to provide me with the attention and affection I deserve. I’m Grover and I am a total comedian! I live to make my people laugh and thrive on affection. I’ll try to grab your attention by “sneezing”, making funny noises and saying a few words. I do have a preference for men though and will be a wonderful pet to a man willing to hang out and laugh it up with me. pet rescue magazine

Hi my name is Mika, and I am a very nice and happy puppy. I get along great with children, cats, and other dogs! I have not been in my foster home long, but my foster mom says I am so much fun to have around! I am only 11 months old so I keep learning new things everyday. With just a little bit more training I will make a great addition to any family. Give me a call and come meet me! Hi Button here! I am about 2.5yrs old and a bit shy. My buddy Popple is about 3.5yrs old and has beautiful long hair. We are a Holland Lop X and American Fuzzy Lop X. I am slowly getting used to being petted. I am very sweet and I am the submissive bunny in this pair. Popple is a very outgoing bunny who always has to know what you are up to. She’ll hop over to sit by your feet, and she enjoys having the fridge or cupboards opened so she can try to hop inside and see if there are any treats within reach! We are both litter trained and adore fresh greens. I like hanging out in my den, but will always stick my head out when I hear you coming to say hello. We are bonded bunnies and must be adopted together. We are also free-range bunnies and must be allowed to live in a bunny pen, bunny room or similar situation - no cages please. local stories...local people...local pets

My name is Lucy and I was wandering in the country and followed a wonderful lady home. Sadly, no one claimed me as their own. I am almost a year old and weigh about 38lbs. I am a Border Collie/Lab X. I get along with other dogs and I am respectful of cats that stand up to me. I do not bother with the horses but seem a little too interested in the sheep here at my foster home. I love to chase a tennis ball and would make a great jogging partner. I need some work on manners and basic commands but I learn very quickly. I would be great at agility or flyball. I need a home that will exercise me and keep me active. I would probably be too much for small children but I sure enjoy the company of older children.

Happy Fathers Day Dad! Luv Keltie, Jamie, Kyle, Philip & Daniel They call me Munchkin! I am a 5yr old, female, shorthaired, black cat with a beautiful round face and yellow eyes. I am part Manx although I do have a tail. I am very quiet, affectionate and content to be on my own sleeping in my special places. However, when it comes to socializing I am very loving and can be quite chatty. I love to have people pet me and once you do I roll onto my back to get tummy rubs. I am used to other cats but will give a little hiss initially when meeting. I would enjoy a quiet and easy going environment.

Hi! My name is Coal and my best friend is Tibet. We are a Dwarf X and Dwarf Himalayan X. I love to nap stretched out as far as I can go, with my hind legs stuck straight out behind me. I am around 2yrs old and a very curious girl, always standing up on my hind legs to say hi as you come up to my pen. Tibet went through an enucleation (eye removal) and recovered beautifully. Thank you to the Calgary Trail Pet Hospital for their huge effort – I am so very grateful they were able to save him! We are deeply bonded and must go to our forever home together. We are very quiet, well behaved, litter trained and easygoing bunnies. We would make wonderful first time bunnies but due to Tibet’s special condition a quiet home with set routines and no small children or dogs is requested.

Do you need some Sunshine? Here I am, my name is Sunny! I am an active, smart girl with a strong will. I need an owner with a stronger will who will be consistent. I am coming up on 2 years old and weigh about 55lbs. I am an Australian Shepherd X and would excel in agility/fly ball sports, search & rescue or as a working dog. I am very focused and look for your approval. I am doing quite well on a leash and sit for treats & for throwing my rope toys. I love to carry things around in my mouth but I am not a chewer. I get along well with other dogs and I am a very loyal companion Without a lot of exercise I can become hyper. When I first came in, I jumped my 5’ fence practically every day but now I just think about it and usually stay put. I would require a 6’ fenced yard.

My name is Buddy and I am just that! I am a beautiful, big male tabby, around 2yrs old. I was dropped off at a farm and the kind residents cared for me until NASAP could take me. I love playing with other cats that are playful and assertive like I am. I tend to boss around more submissive feline friends. I am quite laid back and entertain myself with toys and catnip. However, I am afraid of dogs and get agitated if I hear them bark. I am very affectionate and love to be close, but watch those claws when I am in a playful mood... I sometimes think fingers can be fun too! I would be a great indoor cat for adults and older children.

I‛m a 4 year old American Eskimo. Please call and ask about me! Hello, I’m Gracie. I’m new at the SPCA and they say I am such a sweet little (but not actually that little) wonder-girl! I’m not just another pretty face with big, soft ears, I’m just as sweet as I look. I am almost two years old, spayed and a Yellow Lab/Coon Hound cross. I am so ready to start a new life with a committed, loving, family who will take great care of me for the rest of my many years. Learn more about me by visiting the Hinton SPCA website. Excuse me!!! I’m Layla. If you’re not looking for a dog that is like your grandmother’s, then I’m the girl for you. I’m highly intelligent and athletic. I am a gorgeous, medium-sized girl, approximately one-year old. I am a spayed, female Coon Hound cross and I’m incredibly smart, well socialized, and sweet, and ready to be part of a loving family who is ready for me. If you want to learn more about me visit the Hinton SPCA website. Thank you. Lights...Camera...Action! With my movie-star good looks, and lovable personality, I’m hoping it won’t be long before I find a new, loving, and stable adoptable family. Oh...by the way I’m Jake. I’m a wonderful, 10-month old, soon-to-be-neutered male Malamute/German Shepherd cross. I am smart and sensitive too. I’m a little shy in new situations, but I am well-mannered and friendly with everyone I meet. If you think you have what it takes to offer me the daily exercise, training, quality nutrition, love and affection that I deserve for many years to come.

Paws and Claws Animal Rescue Foundation My name is Toshiba; I was found huddled at the side of the road on a garbage bag. I was so thrilled to see the Paws & Claws angels stop, I toddled over immediately as I was getting pretty lonely out there by myself and I was terribly uncomfortable and itchy from sarcoptic mange. This is easily treated in a few days; I will be free of the itchy mites very soon. I have captured the attention of everyone here and I am always the first to greet you with gentle kisses. I get so happy when I see my foster Mom’s son walking towards me... I usually forget all about her! I’m being fostered in Red Deer. My name is Chester and I am the new “story teller” around here. I am always the first to call out in the morning and have plenty of interesting things to talk about...I am extremely entertaining! I am very affectionate and love everyone. I came in with an injured leg, I think I was bitten on the top of my elbow. I like to show off my wound because I get cheese with my antibiotics! As you can see I am also one of the prettiest little boys around! I’m being fostered in Red Deer.

I’m Eza and I am a very pretty, Cocker Spaniel X. I am around 1.5-2 years old and the sweetest little girl PARS has seen in a while. I love the kids and follow my foster mom everywhere. When I came to PARS I was so skinny you could see every rib but I am such a little lady that I still wait until I am told it’s okay to eat. No, Winn-Dixie did not step off the movie screen and into Prairie Animal Rescue. My name is Lazner. I am a 2yr old Irish Wolfhound X that is very, very tall. I am good with kids and okay with other dogs, providing they leave me alone. I have not yet met the family cats. I came to PARS with a very large, very infected wound on my neck which has since healed. I will need regular grooming for my handsome, creamy colored locks, but that’s ok because I love the attention.

“After a brief marital discussion, it was decided (since it was Mothers’ Day!) that I would be loaded into the truck.” My name is Cope, because I have coped with so much. I am a 1yr old Lab Collie X. I coped with living in a town that has no animal bylaws and scrounging for food even though I lived around so many people. I was shooed out of trash bins and picnic areas...I was starving but no one offered me anything to eat, and I still managed to cope. On Mothers’ Day, I was found by PARS volunteers hanging around a gas station, skirting around people that kept trying to kick me away. Everyone complained about me but no one would claim me as their own. After a brief marital discussion, it was decided (since it was Mothers’ Day!) that I would be loaded into the truck. I then coped with the stress of a vehicle ride I was not used to and a family picnic. I was weak from hunger and scared of the new kindness I was receiving, but I still hung in there. Next I had to cope with meeting an entourage of dogs. I grow more confident everyday, despite of all the things I have gone through I continue to thrive. Remus is in the house!!! Well not quite yet, but that’s why I’m looking for a family & home to love me forever. I am a typical adolescent male; ready for a good time! I listen well, am house trained and truly believe I should live in the house. I like other dogs but I’m not sure what I’m like with cats yet. I also really like kids, however I am still a bit jumpy to be around the young ones. My brother and I became quite a handful for our owner, so I came to reside at PARS. It is a policy of PARS to never let two pups go at the same time, usually it proves to be too much to handle when they feed off one another’s attention.

Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS)

My name is Ford and I am a 7mo old, male Lab/ Shepherd X. I love my people and I am good with kids. I am a little scared of other dogs, but I come around. I met the cats once and did well but PARS says I should meet them a few more times to make sure I am ok with them. I got the name Ford because I am reliable, durable, and ultimately seen every day by PARS. Every time they adopt out one of us happy little brown fellas, another one shows up. I’m not sure if we all are related, but every few weeks there is another look alike...so if you miss out on me, be sure to check back on the PARS website!

Morgan here! I am an energetic, affectionate, 5 yr old, female, purebred Chocolate Lab. My ideal place is in a French speaking home. I understand and respond best to French commands. I’ll need to be the only pet in the home as I do have some issues with cats and other dogs. I love people and love spending time on the couch or out walking. I am an excellent family pet but I don’t get along so well with children under 12…I’m just not sure what to make of them! I have a personality that is next to none, I also sing and love to chat.

Howdy! Molson is my name and I am a 1yr old Lab X who is looking for a home. I am housetrained, great with kids of all ages, wonderful with other dogs and even pretty good with cats. I have a loving personality and love bath time. I need a fenced yard and someone that will walk and take good care me...in return I will show you true, unconditional love.
