Multiple Dog Households
by Miriam Fields- Banineau So few books address the multiple dog issue other than in a paragraph or two at the end of a chapter, so I was eager to read an entire book focusing on the dynamics of a multiple dog family. This book has amazing photographs, and there is sound advice regarding hierarchy and addressing sibling rivalry if two dogs are from the same litter. It lists the pros and cons of having more than one dog, including financial commitments with grooming, vets, food, and kenneling. However, the focus of this book is directed primarily towards those that are thinking about having a second or third dog, and not for those that are already in that situation- as is the case with many homes. In that respect, this book falls short. The only thing I could pull from it was a daily schedule of exercise; however, this seemed aimed towards those who don’t have to work a nine to five job. The training section of the book is basic and one would hope that your first dog would already know most of the commands. It doesn’t address what happens when you try to train both dogs to do as you say. Those with a couple of dogs know that separately they might have excellent behaviour, but together they can be overwhelming. Overall, this was a disappointing read with nothing new to offer and seems to almost double as a venue for advertising specific products by Wahl.

If you’re like most pet owners, your animal’s safety, happiness and health is important. For dog owners, this includes taking your pet on routine walks. Walking your dog is not only rewarding for him, it also provides benefits for you. This is why it is important to understand the guidelines for dog walking before you hit the trails. Safe dog walking begins with effective planning. When deciding where to walk your dog, it is important to map out both on and off-leash areas within the city. You may walk your dog in your neighbourhood and on City park trails, but he must be on-leash. If he wants to run free, take him to any of the City’s 40 off-leash areas. These areas are located in many city neighbourhoods and throughout Edmonton’s River Valley Parks such as the Buena Vista Off-Leash Park located just across the North Saskatchewan River from Hawrelak Park via a pedestrian foot bridge. Keep in mind that you must honour the off-leash site rules – stay in boundary, keep dogs in view, pick up their mess, and control behaviour. In addition, dogs must be onleash when entering or leaving any off-leash park site. If your dog is found running loose in a prohibited area, you will be asked to leave and may face a fine of $100 for a ‘dog at large.’ While picnic sites, playgrounds, golf courses, and sports fields seem like ideal locations for dog walking, your pet is not allowed in these

Hello, my name is “Bacon” and I am a 1.5yr old Ball Python. I was burned very badly by an under tank heater on my aquarium bottom. The temperature was not being monitored properly and it became way too hot burning over half of my belly scales. My owner moved and his parents didn’t really like snakes, so they brought me to ERAS. They were very grateful the society knew how to care for my injuries and happy the society will try to find me a new home.

With bright bold pictures and simple text, this children’s book is a wonderful read and one that your child will be sure to ask to be read over and over again at bedtime. This book is great for beginning readers with large bold type and gorgeous coloured pages. The author was born and raised in Alberta and is the author of several books for children including Oh, Cats!, Sid and Sam, and Creepy Crawly Critters. Throughout the summer, Edmonton hosts a number of festivals and events. While it may seem like a good idea to bring your dog, this is illegal for many reasons. First, biting may occur when dogs become stressed by large crowds – people step on them; music and voices are loud; and children vigorously play. Due to the influx of park traffic, your dog is at increased risk of being injured or killed. Many events do not provide any shelter for your pet, so there is high risk of heat stroke. Finally, dogs are not permitted where food is consumed, so they must be kept away from food vendors and picnickers. Leaving your dog in the car is also not an option. Even if the windows are open, the car can heat up to three times the temperature outdoors. This means your pet can develop fatal heatstroke in just a few minutes. The best way to ensure your dog’s safety is to leave him at home during an event.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society Yippeeeeee! Here I am out in front! My name is Mary and these slowpokes behind me are my buddies Druid and Sasha...and there’s at least 130 more of us back on the SCARS website! Although loving I would be best suited to a home without small children as I can be a nervous girl. I am great with other dogs, house trained and extra special...not to mention fast! The white Shep on the right is Druid...still the most handsome guy here at SCARS! He is about 6yrs old and not just a pretty face either! He is house trained, great with other dogs and listens to every word you say. He is good off leash, but unless you don’t mind having any feeling in your hand he’s gonna need a little work while on leash! The gorgeous Collie X on the left is Sasha. She is 2yrs old, beautiful, smart, and active. She is also house trained, VERY well behaved indoors, loves playing with other dogs, and she’s truly the BEST listener in the whole world. I have to say, Sasha hates the kennel and gets quite scared in new situations so she needs a very patient, dog-friendly and experienced home. SCARS says the right fit is out there for each one of us and we just need to stay patient. My name is Henessy and I am back at SCARS after three years. I am a large Shep X and I am really enjoying being out on an acreage... I LOVE to run and go quading. I grew up with kids and another dog, but I do not like cats. Truman”). When I was rescued I wasn’t walking on one of my back legs, turned out I had a nasty bone infection and one of my toes had to be removed. Thank goodness for rescuers, they tell me I wouldn’t have lasted the winter without the surgery! I love playing with the dogs and cats; we are all good buddies. My foster mom is teaching me hand signals and I am also completely house and crate trained. I really enjoy going for walks, do well on leash and car rides don’t bother me in the least. My family brought me home all cradled in their arms. They cuddled me, and smiled at me, and said I was full of charm. They played with me, and laughed with me, they showered me with toys. I sure do love my family, especially the girls and boys. The children loved to feed me, they gave me special treats. They even let me sleep with them, all snuggled in the sheets. I used to go for walks, often several times a day. They even fought to hold the leash, I’m very proud to say. These are things I’ll never forget, a cherished memory. For now I live in a shelter, without my family. They used to laugh and praise me when I played with that old shoe, but I didn’t know the difference between the old ones and the new. The kids and I would grab a rag, for hours we would tug. So, I thought I did the right thing when chewing the bathroom rug. They said that I was out of control, and would have to live outside. This I did not understand, although I tried, and tried, and tried. The walks stopped, one by one; they said they hadn’t time. I wish that I could change things; I wish I knew my crime. My life became so lonely, in the back yard on a chain. I barked and barked all day long, to keep from going insane. So they brought me to the shelter, but were embarrassed to say why. They said I caused an allergy, and each kissed me good-bye. If I’d only had some classes, as a little pup. I wouldn’t have been so hard to handle when I was all grown up. “You only have one day left.” I heard the worker say. Does that mean a second chance? Do I go home today?
Addison (picture above) did go home, and was given his second chance thanks to SCARS. However, there are many stories that don’t end as happily as this. Our hope at Pet Rescue Magazine is that we will help rescued animals find forever homes, and then their will be hope for those still waiting. Please tell your friends about us.

Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) Bandit is my name and getting attention is my game. After being in foster care for over six months and then adopted, I was recently returned to SNAP. I just can’t figure out why someone doesn’t want me! I love people, other cats, older kids, and I’m very easy to get along with. I’m told I have a great personality and I’m good looking to boot! Kenzie is my name! I’m a 1yr old, Calico with a stunning coat. I was recently returned to SNAP through no fault of my own. I’m a bit frightened, but I’m trying my best to settle back in. I’m very sweet, and will let more of my true colors shine through when I find my forever home. CUTE, SMART, CUDDLY...that just sums us up in a nutshell! Hi there, we are three sisters and we are all ready to go to our forever homes. Our Mom ended up in one of the pounds, that’s where she gave birth to us. We were claimed with our Mom, but the people decided we weren’t wanted so they gave us puppies up to SNAP. We are very sweet, 5 mth old All Canadian mix breed. Not much is known about me, but they’re guessing I’m about 1yr old. I’m very timid and shy in nature, but I’m a diamond in the rough and will let my personality shine bright once I’m settled in a new home. I’m a 10 month old sweetheart living in foster care with a menagerie of other cats and dogs. I’m playful, talkative and have a mind of my own. I like to be played with and receive affection on my own terms. I would prefer to go to a bilingual English/Cat household, but I’m patient and willing to train suitable applicants. Not much is known about me, but they do tell me I am a 2yr old, gorgeous Tortie. One thing is for sure, I’m grateful for the regular meals, health care and safe space, but I can’t wait to find a family who loves me! Could it be you?

Presenting Her Majesty, Queen Fluffy! That’s me, the queen! I’m a 1yr old Samoyed and beautiful in the all the ways a queen should be...I also have the attitude you’d expect of a powerful woman. However, some private etiquette lessons are likely to help me step into the role of noble monarch. Step 1 Practicing:
It is wise to do some training with your dog beforehand to prepare them for this usually unwanted experience. Place them in the tub with lots of praise and their favorite treats so that they will have a positive association with the tub before you actually put water on them. Teaching them some basic obedience commands such as wait, stay, down and sit will also help a great deal.
Step 5 Shampoo & Conditioner:
Now add the recommended amount of shampoo and scrub the fur and skin making sure to be careful of the eyes. Rinse well getting the water right down to the skin. Next add the recommended amount of conditioner giving it some time to soak in, if your dog will let it! Rinse well again.
Step 2 Prepare: Everything you need should be handy before you start bathing. You will need towels, a brush, a metal comb, shampoo and conditioner. You should use a canine shampoo and conditioner because canine’s skin has a more alkaline pH level than that of their human friends. Human products tend to damage or dry out a dog’s skin and coat. Remember to dress yourself for the occasion! A grooming apron or some waterproof nylon clothes are recommended. The last thing that will make the job easier is a handy spray nozzle for your tub or sink that can be purchased at a pet store.
Step 6 Toweling/Drying: Gently use towels to pat dry the coat, face and legs. Be careful not to rub dry long or curly coats because this will cause matting. These coats should be dried with a blow dryer and brush. Short coats can air dry.
Step 3 Brushing: It is very important to brush your dog’s coat thoroughly and then use a comb to make sure ALL the MATTS or majority of the undercoat are gone. Shampoo, scrubbing, water and toweling will make any present matting or undercoat more matted. DO NOT BATH A MATTED DOG.
However, if you are soaked and your house is now dirtier than your dog was, you may want to call the professionals next time!
Step 7 Final Brush:
Once the coat is dry, one last brushing will help to remove any excess hair or matting.
Step 4 Ready, Set and Go:
It is time to place the dog into the tub using lots of praise and encouragement. Using a collar and leash will give you more control as well as using those obedience commands practiced before. For dogs prone to ear infections, placing a cotton ball carefully in each ear will prevent water from getting down the ear canal. Hang on and thoroughly wet the dog making sure you get the water down to the skin. local stories...local people...local pets

I am 4yrs old and was very lucky to be rescued from an apartment fire way back in 2005 but unfortunately was never claimed so I was re-homed. After 2 years in my new home they moved out of province so here I am again. I am a loving, sweet, indoor only, girl who loves attention. Hi, my name is Moby and I love snuggling and playing with my foster dog sisters. My manners are pretty good but I am big, and do need reminding now and again of what is acceptable. I love to fetch, have good recall and would make a great running partner. I am a little bit on the goofy side and my antics always bring a good laugh... you’re gonna love me!
My name is Andy, short for Andy Panda! I am a 2yr old chatterbox, with a unique vocabulary consisting of duck and chicken sounds! I’ve had a very rough life and as a result I can be extremely fearful in new situations and need a home willing to be very patient and gentle. Once I settle in I have no problem asking for head scratches, tummy rubs and a brushing! My name is Jackson and I’m only about 11 weeks old but I have big paws to grow in to! I am a Lab/Collie X and I was abandoned in the city. I’m going to need the usual training and lots of exercise to keep me happy...are you up for it?

I’m Oliver, a beautiful, well behaved, Miniature American Eskimo who was lost in the countryside. Thankfully a kind lady thought I was worth saving –phew, that was lucky for me! I’m ok with dogs, cats and children of all ages. I am also house and leash trained. They call me Copper C., and I am not yet 6 months old. Nothing much phases me, I am very friendly and I love people. I would fit really well into a young family and I’m at the right age to start training classes...it sounds serious but I’m sure its fun!

The farmer soon discovered her signs of motherhood and began looking for us pups, we were just 6 weeks old! My siblings, Wild Mike and Corn on the Cob have resiliently learned to like you two leggers...but I’m taking a little more time to come around. I love my foster mom and adore the kids but fear anyone else. I do not fear bite, if you corner me I will just give up and surrender to the petting. I am a 9 month old, calm, sweetheart of a girl but I will need a patient and loving family willing to reassure me.

After that no one tried to take me out of my cage for awhile, they would talk to me but I just hid in my litter box. Larry Ohlhauser, loves his pets. The author of The Healthy CEO had a brush with a heart attack a few years ago and has since adopted a new regime for maintaining his physical wellness, and his pets have had a positive effect on his physical and mental health. Without them, his road to recovery might have taken a little longer. Dr. Ohlhauser jogs with his Great Dane on a daily basis, and plays hard with his Dachshund to keep them both healthy. “Pet ownership offers many benefits to adults. With a pet they are more likely to recover from a heart attack, their blood pressure tends to be lower and pet owners stay more active and take better care of themselves,” says the physician who was recently chosen as one of the Top 100 Physicians of the Century by the Alberta Medical Council. Programs such as Pet Therapy bring animals into people’s lives that may have chronic pain, stress, grief, or loss, and an animal’s visit can encourage them to focus on something other than their pain which is incredibly beneficial to their recovery. Pets can comfort people with a touch and be a way to start conversations with people that might have felt isolated in their pain. “Older people with pets feel less lonely and are less depressed and less likely to commit suicide, “explains Dr. Ohlhauser. Children can benefit greatly from having a relationship with a pet at an early age. It is an incredible opportunity to learn about life and death, respect and companionship and a greater understanding of the world around them. One recent study stated that pet owning children who are slow learners, or parents who have been divorced fared much better than parents who were without pets. Children with pets also have higher levels of self esteem and function better emotionally than those without pets. (pet health council) Teachers noted the benefits of introducing pets into the classroom to strengthen social integration and social competence of children. Animal assisted therapy for autistic children is widely practiced, and dog programs like Edmonton’s Paws for A Story are benefiting children’s learning immensely. Children who live with a cat or dog in their first years of life have a lower incidence of hay fever and asthma and are less likely to develop animal-related allergies. Recent stud12

ies also show that the immune systems of children (particularly between the ages of five and eight) of petowning families are more stable than those of children from non-pet owning families - the result being pet-owning children are better able to fend off illness. We’ve always known how our pets make us feel; now they are good for our health as well!

Every day I have a silly moment or two when I rip around with my toys and toss them into the air, but otherwise I mostly like to putter around at my own pace. Now that I’m a senior I prefer peace and quiet, and although I enjoy other dogs and love my people, I need a home with no puppies, cats or young children, please. Maybe I’ll find a place with a retired couple who will hang out with me and putter around at my pace. Wouldn’t that be perfect? Hi, my name is Smoke and I’m a pretty nice guy, but it’s kind of hard to tell right now. Back when I was racing I knew what to expect, routine didn’t vary much except on race days! But suddenly, I have no idea what’s expected of me, so much has changed. I’m friendly and love attention if you let me approach you when I’m ready. I like having other dogs around so I can watch them and do what they do. In fact, I love the company of other dogs and become much more animated when they’re around. I’m not sure about kids; they seem nice and all, but they scare me just a little. I think I’d prefer a quieter home, y’know? I know I have it in me to become a really great companion... I’m trying really hard and I’ll get it soon —I know I will! Hi my name is Twilight, I am a 4yr old boy and I just retired from racing.
