Welcome to PRM! With all of this beautiful weather everyone has been taking advantage whenever they can to get outdoors and enjoy themselves. Our pets are even more excited than us and as always they love to be included. This issue we have some great information about pets and the great outdoors. Whether hanging out in the backyard or sleeping on the back trails you are sure to discover some handy tips. On page 12 you will find an article about indoor cats that will help all of you with those felines that are always darting for the door! It has useful information on keeping your indoor cat occupied and how they can enjoy the outdoors while still staying safe. If it’s your canine itching for the great outdoors, and you like to sleep under the stars, check out page 15 for some practical tips about taking your dog camping. After many requests from people desperate to find their lost pets, or a good avenue to re-home their pets, we have opened the doors to a new classified section. This will give a safer avenue for those responsible pet guardians who can no longer keep their pet but wish to see their pet safe and secure in a new home. Please see page 5 for some valuable information about rehoming your pet and instructions on how to receive your own adoption application full of questions to ask potential new families. Edmonton has more than 40 sites where your dog can run and play without being tied to you by a leash. Before you take your dog to an off leash site, license and vaccinate your dog, make sure your dog obeys your voice commands immediately, and bring a bag or be ready to use your pooper scooper. When you are at an off leash site, look out for other users. The City has a multi-use policy, so expect to share sites with people without dogs. Keep your dog in sight and always have your leash ready to control your dog. Off leash areas may be in river valley parks, on undeveloped land, or in neighbourhood parks. Area maps with the unfenced boundaries are posted at each site.

Re-homing Your Pet
Re-homing your pet is no small feat. Rescue groups and shelters struggle every day trying to find the best fit possible for the pets in their care. That being said I should start by asking you to please try to re-home your pet before contacting rescue groups and shelters to re-home them for you. I don’t know of any organizations that aren’t operating at full capacity most of the time and still receiving calls every day wanting more help. Many of these groups are volunteer operated and it’s really not fair to expect them to give up their time and space for a starving stray in need when you have not at least tried to re-home your pet yourself. If you find yourself in the position were you can no longer care for your pet, ask yourself if you have done everything you can to address
the issue(s). If your child has developed asthma or you suddenly have medical problems that impair your pet care then obviously you have good reason to start this process as soon as possible. Sometimes life changes and it’s just not in your control. However, if the dog won’t stop peeing on the carpet, or the cat is scratching the couch it’s really time to take some responsibility for the commitment you chose to take on. Have you taken the dog to the vet to ask if they have a urinary infection of some sort? Perhaps the dog is getting mixed messages and sneaking off to pee in an area not used so often? Or maybe he’s just not exercised enough and acting out? Talk to vets, talk to trainers, get on the internet and find out what is causing the problem before giving up. Remember... continued page 21

Rescue 100 My name is Ebony and I am about 1.5yrs old. My mom was a grey mare who stood about 15.3. When I first arrived I had troubles with my hind legs because of a tendon condition called Contractures. Since gaining strength my legs have straightened out and I am out running with the herd. The vet says I should be sound when full grown, but may not be suitable for endurance riding. I love getting attention and spending time with people, but have not had any training yet.

It is estimated that the average lifespan of a freeroaming cat is less than three years, compared to 12-15 years for the average indoor-only cat. Our own experience with caring for cats confirms these numbers. And we believe that the weight of these numbers are behind the trend among cat owners to make the safety, health, and happiness of their pet a priority by:
Keeping their cats indoors Creating safe enclosures for unsupervised outdoor activity Enjoying the outdoors with their pet in shared activity

irtually everything your cat needs - play, exercise, a good diet, rest, and companionship - can be had readily, indoors. Your cat does not have to go outside to feel complete, and you should not feel at all guilty if this is the lifestyle you choose for her. The notion that a cat must roam free to be happy is a myth that may end her life prematurely. She can get all of the fresh air and sunshine she needs safely under your supervision. IT’S A DANGEROUS

Some of the most common dangers for outside cats include:
• Accidents
• Vehicles - An outside cat darting across the street is a perfect target for a moving vehicle, and cats that are hit by cars rarely survive.
• Injuries
• Unfriendly dogs - Dogs can inflict life-threatening injuries on cats, especially those who have learned to be trusting towards dogs.
• Fights
• Predators such as coyotes and raccoons - In many areas, wild animals are also potential predators.
• Diseases
• Other cats - If your cat gets into a territorial fight with another cat and gets bitten, it could result in the spread of disease or a painful abscess, with a need for veterinary care. Always check your cat for painful lumps and bumps.
• Poisons

• Injury or cruelty - Not all people love cats. Cats have been known to have been injured by angry neighbors who dislike cats digging in their gardens or hunting birds. • Diseases - Contact with wild animals and other cats can result in the transmis ion of life-threatening diseases such as feline leukemia or feline immuno deficiency virus. • Parasites - The risk of infestations with fleas, ticks, intestinal worms, and other parasites increases in outdoor cats. • Poisons - Although you may have “cat-proofed” your outdoor area, others may not have, and your cat could be exposed to toxic substances such as antifreeze or pesticides. • Harsh weather: Weather conditions can change abruptly, and your cat could experience frostbite in the winter or dehydration in the summer. • Getting lost: Your cat could be shut into a building, stolen, taken to an animal shelter or adopted by others. Many cities have laws against stray animals,including cats. Make sure you keep identifi cation on your cat at all times.
Making the indoors more appealing Make the indoors more appealing by adding a window perch in your home There are many ways you can make the indoors more appealing to your cat and give her similar activities as she would have outdoors. These include: • Activity Centers - Cat trees and play furniture provide tall places for climbing and observation, and scratching posts and toys for stimulation. Avail able in a range of colors, styles, and options to fit your décor, and the needs of your cat. • Treats - To keep her alert, break up your cat’s routine. Stash delicious treats around your home to reward your pet for a good hunt. Some avid outdoors people believe that a dog can appreciate a spectacular panoramic view as much as a human can. But when bringing your dog along on a camping or backpacking trip, you need to make extra plans specifically for your canine companion. Some things to think about:
Preparations * Make sure your dog is current on his vaccinations, and get a health check and certificate from your veterinarian. Also, bring along his rabies vaccination certificate for proof.
Specifics about hiking and backpacking * Pack plenty of water. Dogs cannot cool off by perspiring like we do. In addition to plenty of water, try a Body Cooler Bandana. This is a bandana that you soak in water and place around your dog’s neck to help him stay cool. Do not use this as a substitute for water. * Remember to bring a retractable leash – and an extra one in case one is lost or broken. Leashing your dog on the trail will keep him safe, and retractable models store away easily without tangling.
* Do not forget an identification tag with the name of the park, campground, or “Contact park ranger” on it, or include a phone number of a friend or relative who will know how to contact you.
* Pack food for your pet, along with portable dishes. Remember, he may need more food than usual since he will be burning more calories.
* Just as you would not expect yourself to complete a long hiking trek without conditioning, you must condition your dog, as well. Start a training schedule as you would your own – slowly, with a gradual increase in distance and difficulty.
* Dog over 20 lbs. carrying his own gear, little dog taking a break in the backpack Pet PocketIf your dog is over 20 pounds he can carry his own things in a backpack as well as some of your gear. Pack only unbreakable items in your dog’s pack.
* Some parks allow dogs on trails, others prohibit them. By the same token, some allow dogs into their campgrounds and public areas, others do not. Call ahead to your intended destination and find out what the rules are before you make plans to bring your dog.
* Make sure to let your dog practice carrying his loaded pack around the neighborhood before you take him on the trail. Start going on walks with just the pack and gradually add items to get your dog used to the extra weight.
* Remember a first aid kit for yourself and your dog. Additional items for dogs might include tweezers or pliers for removing thorns or porcupine quills, a sock in case a paw is injured, adhesive tape, and a disposable razor for shaving fur from around a wound. * Pack dog boots if you are going to be hiking in rough terrain, since dog pads are not normally tough. If you opt for no boots, make sure to check your dog’s footpads every day.

hoebe, Paige and Penny (above) are just three of the six puppies born to Peyton, a stray, a few short weeks ago; and they will be the last of the litters she will mother. Peyton, will be spayed through “Spay/ Neuter For Life” an initiative to reduce the overpopluation of dogs currently living on the Paul Band First Nations land, where Peyton roamed freely and had no place to call home.
Rescue for Life, the organization responsible for implementing the program, has been working Peyton at rescue in the vibrant community that has welcomed the assistance of this non-profit organization. In the past they have struggled like many rescue organizations to keep up with the number of puppies and dogs needing to be re-homed, and dreamed of a day when they could raise the funds to effect change. recipient of a $25,000 Pepsi Refresh Grant has made “Spay/ Neuter For Life” a dream come true. Working with the Crestwood Vet Clinic, they are providing 50 spay/neuter, by donation, procedures to the animals of Paul Band during the 2011 calendar year. This means families will be able to take advantage of this program regardless of finances, and Rescue For Life is hoping to double the number in 2012. “Spay/Neuter For Life” will help to reduce the amount of puppies being born in the community by altering owned and free-roaming dogs. “Spay/Neuter For Life, is more than an initiative to spay/ neuter, it also encompasses education to elevate the local stories...local people...local pets
awareness of becoming a responsible companion pet guardian. It includes topics such as the importance of vaccinations to counteract common but deadly companion animal diseases, the issue of chaining dogs, animal identification, and adequate food requirements. Over the last 12 months or so, donated pet food has been supplied to the less fortunate in the community to the tune of over 1000lbs per month, a large part of which has been organized through Pet Rescue Magazine. Rescue for Life also provides about 300 lbs per week to the community and feeds many of the stray shyer dogs that have no home and are waiting to be removed for adoption. Rescue For Life working together with the Paul Band social workers and some concerned residents is starting to see change – and for once, it’s change for the betterment and welfare of the companion animals and the community as a whole. prm

Wire mesh, hung at a 45 degree angle along the top of the fence, can effectively limit escapes. • Doors - Installing a cat door connected to a screened-in porch, fenced yard, or a run frees your cat to enjoy theoutdoors as he desires, and provides a quick escape from predators. Teaching your cat to walk on a leash will ensure his safety outside: • Leashes - Because most cats won’t walk on a leash naturally, you must teach them. For your first walks, try starting in the late evening or early in the morning in a quiet area. Your cat is much more likely to venture out when there’s no one else around. Most cats take a few days to adjust to the idea of leash walking. Because cats don’t like to feel restricted, use a light weight nylon leash that’s about four to five feet long, or a retractable lead which will help eliminate tugging, pulling and straining, and enable your cat to roam upto 16 feet. For cats, it is best to use a harness instead of a collar. • Carriers - You can carry your pet anytime, anywhere, and protect her from other animals, putting an end to impromptu “street fights.” With adjustable shoulder and waist straps, many carriers are comfortable for you and your pet. They are also ideal transport for ail ing or disabled pets. • Environmental safety - Attach a bell to your cat’s har ness collar to prevent her from killing songbirds or small mammals and to alert people that she is around. • Timing - If you do allow your cat outside unconfined, do so when you are home and preferably during the daytime and periods of low traffic to reduce the hazards he will be exposed to

there are always reasons, and there are always options. For instance, you can get sprays that deter cats from scratching your funiture, provide toys and posts that can serve the cat’s purpose (and legitimate need) for scratching, or even plastic caps that can be put over top of their nails so they can’t do any damage - and you don’t have to get the hot pink ones unless you want to! If you have exhausted all of your resources and are still unable to care for your pet please remember that finding the right match can take a lot of time. Many rescue groups have animals in foster care for multiple years. It’s important to be very proactive and take action as soon as possible if you must re-home your companion pet. Your pet should be spayed/neutered, and have current vaccinations. Also be sure you’ve addressed any health concerns (dental, grooming etc.) before you start to write a profile up. Be honest in your profile, you want to make sure you don’t set your pet up for failure or trouble in their new home so the more information you can share with the potential adopter the better. Include anything you can think of…age, breed, medical history/needs, like/dislikes, fears, quirks and any training or behavioral concerns. Also include your preferred contact information and a recent picture of your pet. Contact all of your friends and family to help. Mail, hand deliver or email your pet’s profile and ask them to help you by circulating the information. You can also get on public forums, and many websites that will let you post your pet’s picture and their information. Never list your pet as “free”. Don’t expect someone to pay you purebred rates, but do place a value to avoid potentially dangerous adoptions. It is wise to expect an investment from a new home, pets can be expensive. If you just want the best for your pet you might consider giving their adoption fee to your vet and providing the new home with a nontransferable credit for future medical maintenance & care with a clinic you already know and trust! Don’t be scared to ask those who are interested in adopting your pet about their home and lifestyle. You are placing your pet’s life and care into another’s arms. This is important, so don’t be shy or get embarrassed.

Paws For A Story “PAWS For A Story” is an animal assisted reading mentor program presented by the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta. The program is offered to enhance literary skills and to encourage the joys of reading. A comfortable reading environment is achieved with the assistance of handler and companion animal teams creating a favourable reading experience. While reading to pets in a relaxed environment, school aged children and youth can develop & build confidence with their reading skills. “Paws for A Story” is proudly offered in 14 of the Edmonton Public Libraries and more recently the Edmonton Young Offenders Centre (EYOC).
