Lap It Up! Hello Everyone! We are bursting at the seams! Each month we have more and more deserving animals that we are having trouble fitting in. As we do provide this space free of charge to showcase rescued animals, advertising is an essential component to our survival, as well as growth. Please consider PRM when advertising and support the business’s you find in these pages. Don’t forget to let them know your patronage is due to their care in helping to bring these precious animals home. With Easter coming, we want to take this opportunity to ask those considering baby bunnies, chicks or ducks for Easter crowd pleasers to think again! They are just too small and vulnerable to be handled by most young children, the internet is full of horror stories. Please, do not buy live, novelty, gifts. The chicks and ducks never stay fluffy, or small and they usually end up moving on to a not so pleasant place...explain that to the kids! Rabbits also grow up, and may lose their novelty and appeal. They are often left forgotten in their cage with no room to run and play, and worse yet, very little contact. It’s a terribly lonely existence for any animal to be so isolated. Please act responsibly when choosing at companion animal. The PRM Team We really appreciate your comments and feedback. Please feel free to email us directly at rescuemag@shaw.ca

Tails From Home
The January cover of Pet Rescue Magazine caught my eye. Specifically, the white kittens, they tugged at my heartstrings. I have two other rescued cats, and I wasn’t looking for another. Until I saw and read about Lexi and her siblings. I could not sleep and something told me I needed to call; that one of those feral white kittens was for me. I called the foster home right away. I was able to adopt Lexi quickly and easily and she’s been an absolute delight! Lexi is kind, cuddly, playful and healthy. And her little Manx stubby tail is precious! My two other cats, Gracie and Mr. Tootles, have adopted her into their household. Now my family is complete, thanks to SNAP, Pet Rescue Magazine and the loving family who fostered Lexi! PET PROMISE Thousands of years ago, we humans formed a covenant with our companion animals. We wanted them to live with us and to share our lives. Because of this our ‘pets’ lost most of their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became our responsibility to feed and care for them. While the animals have kept their end of the bargain, we humans largely have not. ~ Unknown

What are the Rules for Restricted Dogs?
Rachel Sentes Book Review
Rating: The Gift of Nothing
I
Author: Patrick McDonnell
I love walking through the children’s section of a bookstore. The shelves are full of bold and bright covers, stories of witty animals telling hilarious tales, and ridiculous rhymes to read at bedtime. The book The Gift of Nothing by Patrick McDonnell, doesn’t have a flashy cover, and is small and unassuming on the shelf. For this reason, you need to pick it up and read it. You may find yourself getting all mushy in the aisle. Written by the creator of the Mutts comic strip, this little book should be on its way to being a family favourite, because it is a simple, gentle tale that everyone will enjoy. The storyline has a cat named Mooch wanting to give Earl his best friend (a dog) an extra special birthday gift, but has run out of ideas. Overhearing his friends and family comment about “nothing to do, nothing on t.v, and nothing to buy” he searches to find nothing as the best gift ever with lovely results. The main characters are exquisitely drawn in black and white, with a little red thrown in for effect. The pages aren’t overloaded with art; and white space on the page leaves room for the imagination. The story captures the essence of friendship, while also introducing the concept of giving and embracing the beauty of the world around us. The play on the word nothing in the book may require a little explanation for a younger child while reading it, but it soon becomes clear that nothing really is something. It will also ensure that you have an answer then next time you hear a child complain that there is “nothing to do!” This book is uplifting, and presents the concept of gift giving in a positive manner. After reading this book, don’t be surprised if at the next birthday party your child wants to give a seemingly empty box to their friend! This is a beautiful, quiet read, perfect for curling up with on a couch and sharing with your favourite person! Make sure you check out Patrick’s other book Just Like Heaven, another Mooch and Earl Story at your local bookstore. Rachel Sentes is a local Publicist and avid pet lover. 4

n Edmonton, if you own or look after a restricted dog you need to be aware of the City’s bylaw regulations. Owners must pay extra insurance coverage and higher licence fees. They are obligated to carefully secure their dogs both on public property and in their own backyards. Restricted dog ownership comes at a hefty price. Dogs are designated “restricted” for two basic reasons: dog breed or a history of dangerous behaviour. The designation exists to protect the community. To ensure dogs are welcome and safe in our community, Edmonton’s legislation controls breeds that are known to cause serious or fatal attacks on people or pets. Identifying a dog as a specific breed can be very difficult. Dogs that look to be crossed with breeds once associated with bull baiting and pit fighting are restricted. So, unless these terrier crosses are registered or are eligible for registration with the Canadian Kennel Club as a purebred Staffordshire Bull Terrier or American Staffordshire Terrier, severe restrictions apply. However, any dog of any breed that displays bad or dangerous behaviour can also become closely restricted by the bylaw. Dogs with a history of chasing, attacking or biting any person or animal causing physical injury and resulting in a conviction under the City’s bylaw are carefully controlled. Rules that are in place help control risk and limit contact with other people in the community. The City makes every attempt to balance public safety and responsible pet ownership. Owners of “restricted” dogs must carry a minimum of $1 million liability insurance to specifically cover damage for personal injury that may be caused by their dog. To walk on public property, these dogs must be under control, muzzled and held on a leash no longer than two metres long. At home, they must either stay indoors or be secured outdoors in a fully enclosed pen, or muzzled and secured by a chain fixed to the property that prevents them from getting closer than two metres to the boundary of the property. These strict rules are in place for community safety.
breaking the bylaw start at $500. For more information about restricted dogs contact Animal Control Services at 496-3100.

Beagle Paws Rescue Hello! My name is Lulu. I came all the way from Newfoundland to live with my foster family, which includes two resident Beagle sisters who have welcomed me with open paws. I am learning a lot from my big sisters, including where the treat cupboard is! Sometimes I sit, but mostly I dance and spring about. I also love to be cuddled...in fact, I insist on it when my favourite shows are on. My favourite winter sport is “snow swimming” and my foster family says although little, I am big in spirit.
Greetings PRM readers! My name is Harold, and I am one handsome Beagle. Don’t you just love the colour of my feet? They match the rest of me! I am extremely gentle, very sweet, friendly, affectionate, and l am always enthusiastic to greet people. I love, love, love being brushed and stand still as a statue ‘cause I really don’t ever want my foster mom to quit. I have a playful streak and get downright silly sometimes. After my bath I’m at my silliest because I just feel sooo good. A home with another doggie would be absolute heaven. My name is Kaylie and I’m 1.5yrs old. I’m still a puppy at heart, and like most “kids” I have to learn about things I should and shouldn’t do... such as jumping on furniture and people. I’m nearly housetrained, and I’m very smart so it won’t take me long to figure things out. I like cats and in a perfect world I’d have another doggie friend in my new home for company. If you’re looking for a sweet little girl, won’t you please think about me?

Alberta Ferret Society (AFS) Alright … whose the wise guy who put us behind bars!! We don’t deserve this! We are a pair of the most gentle, sweet natured ferrets around! We deserve better, and Austin we hope that you will give us the most wonderful forever home! Until then, we’ll just keep trying to break out of here … fortunately our foster folks know better! By the way, we’re young adults – both just over 3yrs old. Austin, of course, Jersey he’s the boy, and I’m Jersey, the little girl, and we’re what you pink skin types would call Chocolate Fuzzies!
What’s your rush? I’m Stuart, the dark eyed white boy, and I love to amble along at my leisure. The treats will still be there and the toys aren’t moving on their own … but there is Molly to worry about – she goes a mile a minute! Molly, that silver mitt girl, does have the cutest little white tips on each one of her toes! And she’s a little younger than me … I’m 1.5yrs old, and she’s only 1yr old … maybe she’ll slow down when she gets older! Whatever, we are both really gentle, well behaved and would be perfect for the first time ferret owner.

My name is Boomer and I’m an Eastern Collard lizard, and yes, I know I’m impressive! I am diurnal, meaning I’m awake during the day, and highly active. I will grow up to 14” and require a large cage that allows me to run, and allows for naturalistic design using rocks and sand. I need high temperatures and a low humidity to be healthy and happy. Please be prepared to fill out a detailed adoption questionnaire. My adoption fee is $60.00 and includes a heat lamp, some rocks, a food dish, and a water dish. Please do not apply unless you have at least 120 gallons available for my enclosure. Boomer will be available for adoption soon, to learn more please visit

WHEE!!! YIPEE!!! I’m just so full of energy and joy that you might get tired just watching me. I’m non-stop, bouncing off the walls and running rings around my foster family. I seem to get along well with other ferrets though they have a hard time keeping up with me. I’m all of 1.5yrs old, and I’m a regular sable girl! Catch me if you can … WOHOO!

Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) They call me Blackie. Not much is known about my history before being rescued off the streets. Though my ears are nicked and my coat is scruffy, I’m a gentle, sweet, soul who needs and deserves a great home. I’m a big, tall cat who needs to have three square meals a day to fill out my overly lean frame. Can I come fatten up at your place? Toots is my name! I am a 9 month old, independent, little girl currently living in foster care. I’m playful, get along well with the other felines, and love typical kitten shenanigans like toilet paper rolls, gift wrap ribbon and beating up houseplants! Do you have a place in your home for some feline fun?
My name is Devi and I’m about 1.5yrs old. I am a pound rescue and can be very timid and shy. Sometimes I can even get a bit confused by everything happening around me, so I’m really hoping my new family will come soon. I am looking for a quiet, mature home where I can relax and let my true personality shine. I am only 1.5yrs old but already the proud Mom of two tuxedo kittens who’ve already found good homes. Originally, as a stray, I was scrounging food for myself and my kittens, so needless to say I am terribly grateful for the warmth, love and regular meals here at SNAP. They say I’m really coming out of my shell, but being quiet, shy, and timid I’d do best in a quiet home. 6

I was born to a stray and currently still working on becoming socialized. Though very sweet, I’m still very nervous in new surroundings and need a kind, gentle, loving home to give me the understanding and tlc I deserve. I am only 3 months old after all! I’m just over 1yr old and seriously have the cutest little black nose! I’m very quiet, sweet, and incredibly easy to love. Unbelievably, someone left me out in the country to fend for myself! Thank goodness I was found and brought to SNAP. Because of my shy nature I’d do best as the only pet in my new home. You should come by and meet me!
Ben here, I’m a 1yr old, male, Shep/ Rotti X. I enjoy going for walks, runs and I love a good game of fetch. I am kennel/house trained and always eager to show off the skills I learned in manners training class. Though I live in foster care with multiple cats and dogs, I prefer to spend my outdoor time one on one with my family. At times I find too many other alpha dogs a bit overwhelming. If you’re looking for a friendly and fun loving dog, please call SNAP to meet me as soon as possible.
Hello, my name is Penny, as in Penny for your thoughts. Don’t you think I’m the cutest girl on the page? I’m only 4 mths old and I’m full of vim and vigor. I love to play and then crash for a nice long nap! If you could give me the love I deserve then please call and ask about me. I will be waiting at my foster mom’s home until you come to get me.

Sammy is the name! I’m a 1yr old pound rescue. Although I’m grateful for the warm space and regular food, I just can’t wait to find my new family. I’m very timid and soft spoken, so I would do best in a quiet home. Elvis is in the house!! I am very playful and fairly well behaved. I even seem to have had some obedience training. I’m still kind of new around here but so far I seem to be a very nice boy with a laid back personality.
They call me Tux because of my striking black and white suit. I’m around 1yr old, but because I’m a pound rescue not much is known about my history. I’m a large, energetic and extremely playful boy looking for my very own house to romp around in. Could you be the family I’ve been waiting for? My name is Mozart and I’m a 1.5yr old sweetheart. I’m trying my best to fit in around here although I’m sure not saying much about my past. I’m quite shy and a bit overwhelmed by my new surroundings, so I’m really hoping my new family finds me soon to take me home.

Matts Matter - Part 2
Keep your pets matt free By Rachelle Reichart Owner Lil Arf’n’ Annie Dog Grooming Edmonton
If your read last month’s column you’ll now know what coat type your pet has and it’s grooming requirements, we continue this month with some tips to help prevent matting. 1) Brushing keeps the fur matt free only if it is done properly. Always lift the fur and brush right down to the skin. Many people do a fine job of brushing but only the top of the fur. When you have finished brushing the entire coat always go through it again with a metal comb. The comb will catch any nags you missed. 2) NEVER bath a matted dog. Soap, water and scrubbing actually pelt the fur and tangle the matts closer to the skin. Always brush and comb the fur out before the bath. Try to blow dry the fur after and use a brush to prevent the fur from getting curly and tangled. 3) Use a shampoo and conditioner formulated for the use specific to your pet’s spe-
cies. Use a spray-on conditioner between baths to keep static down and to help with the detangling. 4) Ask your groomer about special tools and products that can assist you between professional groomings. 5) Scheduling professional grooming appointments in advance will ensure your pet receives professional grooming on time, not 3 weeks late because your groomer is too booked or you forgot. 6) A trained pet that knows basic commands and is used to being handled makes for a much happier and comfortable grooming experience for both you and your groomer. 7) Make sure you schedule your pet to be professionally groomed BEFORE you go on holidays so that the coat is easy to main-
tain for whoever is looking after them. Things to keep in mind..... Leaving your pet matted means they are uncomfortable all of the time because the matts continually pull on their skin. Many health issues can arise such as hotspots and fleas or lice. Asking your groomer to dematt a badly matted dog or cat is torture and in my opinion inhumane because it does cause them pain and discomfort. Remember that grooming takes practice for both you and your pet, so don’t get discouraged too quickly. With a little patience you will be amazed at the special bond you will form and when you see how beautiful, healthy and happy your pet is, it will all be worth it.

March Feature Group
Hinton & District SPCA You don’t have to pan for gold in our mountains. We have all the gold you need right here in our shelter!
The Hinton and District SPCA is a Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and is made up of a small, but dedicated, group. The shelter has been running for about 14 years, in 5 different locations, and services the Hinton, Edson, Jasper and Grande Cache areas. Shelter pets are provided with quality nutrition, health care, grooming, training, and regular exercise while awaiting their new home. All pets are spayed or neutered before adoption unless they are too young. All pets are kept until a home can be found and in some cases have resided there over a year. The largest challenge currently faced is building a much needed, brand new, shelter. Fundraising is in full swing and $300,000 has already been raised, but approximately $1,000,000 more is needed to complete the new facility. You can see the building development plans at www.hintonspca.com. Fundraising currently includes a $1000 camping equipment raffle, numerous bingos, 400+ donation boxes, selling t-shirts and bracelets, an ongoing and ever growing recycling program, casino and a brand new membership program. Boarding and bathing services are available as well.
The Hinton & District SPCA will also be co- hosting “A Wee Bit O’ Irish” on March 15th. Festivities include dinner, entertainment and a massive silent auction! Call (780) 865-2800 for more information.
My name is Sophie! I am a cute, compact, athletic, 4yr old, Lab/Boxer X who is just as sweet as can be. I am about 45 lbs and have a lovely, soft, short haired, brindle coloured coat. I am very well-mannered and pretty good on-leash too. I do have a high prey drive though, so I am best suited to a home where I would be the only four-legged member, especially when it comes to cats. Everyone tells me all the time how sweet, affectionate and intelligent I am! Tell me about it Richard!!! Everyone tells us what lovely boys my brother Sandy and I are (we try very hard!), but we still have not found our trail home. My name is Dewey, and we are 11 months old, neutered, Coon Hounds looking for caring, indoor homes. We both can be fairly bashful in new situations because we have not had much opportunity for social interaction in our previous home. We just keep improving though and now we love to play and give kisses. We are looking for patient, loving, knowledgeable and gentle leaders, who are willing to spend lots of time with us in our new homes.
Hey…it’s me Richard…just hanging out and wondering why I’m still here. My friends call me Ricky and I am sporting one of the coolest coats ever. I am a brilliant Heeler/Rotti X and I am as adorable on the inside as I am on the outside. I have a very sweet and affectionate personality, listen well and I’m quite intelligent. I am only knee high, weigh 45 lbs, and although I am a little on the thin side, I am still REALLY strong and will require leash training. I am looking for a loving, indoor home where I can be the only male dog (or only dog). I am as true blue as they come. I am called Emily, and I am an adorable, energetic, petite, 6 month old, Shih-tzu X. I am unbelievably lovable and just about as sweet as a puppy can be. I am a precious little ball of fluff –BUT- I’m also a little ball of energy and will need my exercise. Sometimes I will keep going like the energizer bunny until you pick me up for cuddles.
Everyone likes to call me ‘Little Molly’. I am a full grown Shih-tzu/Poodle X, who is just over ankle high. I need a family that will take me on walks, provide me with lots of doggie crackers to munch on, and a safe, soft bed right beside theirs.... or maybe on top! If you are looking for a nice little lap dog with minimal shedding, but maximum loving, I could be the one for you!
Wish List We invite you to visit us any day of the week between 9am - 1pm or 6:30 - 8:30pm (780) 865-2800

How one little rescue has changed a child’s outlook forever
Rachel Sentes Publicist and Contributing Writer
Sophia and Peko
Sophia was terrified of dogs. She didn’t have a lot of experience around these four footed creatures and they frightened her with their sniffing and licking. When their mouths got too close to her, or they walked past too quickly she would run and cry, begging to be lifted up into her mother’s arms. She was curious, and she really liked the soft fur beneath her fingers, but it was overwhelming to be close to them. The dogs she met weren’t large ones, but for a three year old, anything taller than her knees was a giant. Each time dogs visited her, she became a little braver, but she was far from being secure around them. When she realized that dogs like cookies and they would do tricks for them, she was a little more relaxed, and laughed at the antics, but ultimately she would back away if they moved, or barked, seeking the comfort of her family. She loved the stuffed dogs she received as gifts, and she would happily walk around the living room, pulling them on leashes, hugging them at bedtime and naming them after real dogs that visited, but her fear remained.
One little puppy changed all that. A small bedraggled Shih-Tzu mix, was found wandering the streets of Calgary, cold and lost, and ended up being brought to Sophia’s house in hopes of help. The puppy was stinky and dirty, but for some reason Sophia was drawn to this little soul and a bond was formed that has changed Sophia and her family’s outlook forever. The newly rescued dog was named Peko and Sophia’s fear of dogs began to diminish as soon as she set eyes on the pup. Sophia’s mom spent time educating her child on the proper way to approach their new family member. She was shown how to pet gently, show a flat hand when approaching him, and how to give clear hand and voice commands. The hardest lesson was learning to slow down local stories...local people...local pets
around him, as he really liked to grab pant legs. All of these were important teachings for establishing a safe and rewarding relationship for both Sophia and Peko.
Of course, there were misunderstandings and tears, a few hurt feelings on both sides, but in a few weeks, Peko and Sophia became best friends. Soon Sophia wouldn’t go anywhere without him. Their relationship bolstered a new understanding for all dogs she encountered. When dogs visited, Sophia stayed calm and would even pet them under their chins just like she did with Peko. One of the hardest moments came for Sophia when she and her family were going on vacation, and Peko had to stay with friends instead of going on the boat. Her mom spent a month pointing out in a picture album that Peko was going to stay with his dog friends and have a holiday. On the day of their leaving, Sophia dropped off Peko and his suitcase and tearfully said goodbye. Throughout their trip, Sophia made mention of Peko everyday, and on her return home, their reunion was wonderful to watch. Peko and Sophia are examples of what can happen when rescue dogs are given a chance to be in a family that loves and cares for them. Indeed Sophia’s life is richer for their meeting, and one can see the respect she now has for her dog and everyone else’s animals. A pet offers so much and comparably asks for so little in return. When the conscious decision to save a life is made, the result can be a lifetime of learning, and a greater understanding of the world around us. Nothing is more heartwarming than the bond between a child and a pet.

Northern Alberta Society For Animal Protection (NASAP) I’m Stephanie, a 3yr old with a sharp looking tuxedo coat. When I first came to NASAP I was extremely timid, but now I come out for cuddles all the time and enjoy lots of attention. I really fancy the company of other cats and have been thriving since my best roomie, Spazz, arrived. Initially I will need some time to settle into my new home, so lots of patience and love from my new adopters will be appreciated! I will do best in a quiet environment and it would also really help if I had a familiar face like Spazz’s around. Perhaps my lucky owners will consider adopting Spazz and I together! Salutations! My name is Gordon and I am a handsome, 2.5yr old, gentleman...I mean gentlecat! I can be a bit shy at first but soon become very affectionate and sweet. I love to roll over to have my belly rubbed and this is an absolute must in my new home.
In Memory
Hello, I’m Spazz, a classic tabby, who loves to be cuddled! I’m an affectionate 5yr old and although it took me a little time to get used to my foster home, I have settled in and I’m beginning to relax. I will need a bit of an adjustment period in a new home, but soon enough I will make a wonderful and affectionate pet! I’ll do best in a home without young children. I enjoy the company of other cats, especially my roomie Stephanie. Please consider adopting me, I need a forever friend! My name is Lady Jane Grey and I was a city stray. I was pregnant with my two kittens (GeeRude and Fantasia) when I was rescued and thankfully they have both been adopted! I’m a very lovable 1-2yr old, blue tabby with bright golden eyes and cute little ear tufts. I love nothing more than having my head and chest scratched and will stand at attention for as long as someone is willing. I love to play, once I’m confident and secure with my surroundings. I’ll be happy as a clam when I’m the only cat in a great new home.
My name is Muggins and I am a Collie/ Lab X puppy. I love to get up to mischief, but I’m very smart and learn quickly what is right and wrong. I’m a good little eater and will dance for my dinner, so my training should be very easy! I also love going on long walks and to the off-leash park to play with my doggy friends. At night I sleep quietly in my crate but sometimes I still wake up for a potty break. My foster mom has been letting me cuddle on her bed in the mornings too, just so she can catch a few more winks. I am Murphy. I am around 3yrs old and I’m looking for an active family. I LOVE people and I LOVE to play. I can get along with other dogs - as big as me or bigger are best. I’m not fond of cats though and they must be kept away for their sake. I need a home where I will get lots of exercise and lots of love. I am told I am not suitable for a home where there is livestock because apparently those beasts are not for chasing - who knew? So if you’re a dog person who wants a great friend - we may hit it off!

Caramel Although your eyes had failed you, we nursed you day by day. And wondered where you’d come from, our little ginger stray. We took you in and loved you, for the short time that we had. And shed many tears of sadness, when the time came to pass, When you would once again, wander on alone, but this time to The Rainbow Bridge where you’ll be finally home. This page is sponsored by June and Walter in Caramel’s memory 10

Howdy! I’m Rex and no one can believe I was a stray! I still can’t believe it myself, but figured I’d keep everyone at the shelter company until I figured out where to call home. I have loads of character and I’m just one of those guys that love everyone; other dogs, puppies, and kids alike! You just couldn’t ask for nicer guy, and I’m handsome too! I’m an Akita X who would fit into just about anyone’s home…..and definitely everyone’s heart.
Hi all, my name is Duncan and I’m clearly the cutest puppy you’ve ever seen. I’m a super happy boy and love everyone and everything. I’m an 8 week old Terrier/Akita X with personality plus! I’m at the Peace River SPCA with my brothers and sisters….we’re going fast so don’t miss out on the nicest pups this side of the great white north!
Please contact the Peace River SPCA at (780) 624-3633 if you are interested in Duncan or Rex. For more information on the shelter and all of our adoptable animals please visit

What’s In The Stars For Your Pets This Month? Hey you guys, Rocky here ...I am much better looking in the flesh - my foster mom says this photo doesn’t do me justice! You have to MEET me to appreciate my wonderful disposition and charming good looks. I’m only 10 months old and I’m told my breed is a Sharpei X. I am housetrained, easy to live with, and very sociable with everyone. So why not give me a chance to win you over? You never knew you wanted a Sharpei X till you met me! My owner passed away, so suddenly I found myself alone with no one to care for me. My name is Tundra and I’m just hoping that somebody out there will want to give a well mannered, 7yr old, Norwegian Elkhound another chance...after all I didn’t do anything wrong did I? I get along ok with other dogs and cats, and I also know how to sit, lie down and shake a paw I don’t want to get lost either so I always come when I’m called. I’m recovering from some minor surgery right now but I’ll be better very soon and I’d love to meet you. I’ll be waiting!
Hello, I’m Kees, and my sister, Fortune, and I were born in the bush and carried by our Mom to an old dogkennel in a farmers yard. I am the black puppy and I’m a boy. Fortune is the one with the funky colours and we are now about 12 weeks old. We were quite shy when we first came to NASAP but we have gained confidence in our foster home and are now happy friendly puppies. We are just waiting for somebody to take us home so please call for more information on us.

Taurus: April 20 - May 20 Fun adventures are in your cards this month. Whether you are a ferret going for a car ride, a hamster going for ‘show and tell’ or a bunny out hiding Easter eggs -have fun with it, this month everything is smooth sailing! Gemini: May 21 - June 20 Keep it down or animal control will be called out again because of your loud mouth! After they were kind enough to give you a warning last month, it’s really best you keep a muzzle on it! Cancer: June 21 - July 22 With Easter around the corner you’re bound to see more bunnies around town. This year try something new...instead of giving chase try saying hello...you never know who could be your new best friend! Leo: July 23 - August 22 Be careful around mid month as you may be quite accident prone. This means no balancing on toilets, leaving the yard or launching your body like a missile down stairs. If you’re a feline, play it safe and avoid the sandbox. Virgo: August 23 - September 22 Hate to break it to you all, but many of you Virgos are due for a neuter this month. Sorry about your luck, but it had to happen sometime. Don’t worry, it’s definitely for the best....trust me it’s written in the stars!

Libra: September 23 - October 22 This month everyone is howling your praises and you must keep in mind your recent success is not all yours. Take advantage of this opportunity to let the rest of your pack know they did a great job too. Scorpio: October 23 - November 21 This is a month of personal growth for you. Be sure to take some quiet time to get to know your inner puppy or discover that sociable little kitten in you waiting to party!
Chinook Winds Greyhound Rescue
Are you looking for an outgoing, sociable, little Greyhound that wants nothing more than to be the light of someone’s life? That’s me, my name is Lady and I just love life! I also like going for walks; there’s just so much to see! I bet I’d make a fantastic jogging partner if you started me off slowly. As a racing Greyhound, I was a sprinter, so my stamina isn’t that great, but I’m more than willing to work on it if we will be jogging together! Don’t worry, if you don’t jog that’s okay too. There’s nothing I’d like more than to be your special little princess! For more information please call (780) 988-9876 or visit www.chinookwindsgreyhounds.org
Aries: March 21 - April 19 You can get away with all sorts of stuff this month. Create your own reign of terror! Harass the fish, pick on the cat, or borrow a few socks and undies – be sure to rip them apart when they try to resist capture.
Hi, my name is Tap and I’m a retired racing greyhound looking for a home. There is so much for me to learn about living in a home that I sometimes feel a little overwhelmed with all of the changes in my life! I approach new things cautiously, but everything so far has been good and I’m getting more confident at dealing with new things. The best part about retirement is that I get to be with people way more than ever and spend time cuddled up with them. I also love going for walks and neat stuff like that! I know I’m going to enjoy my new life as someone’s companion, and I hope that someone is you! For more information please call (780) 988-9876 or visit www.chinookwindsgreyhounds.org
Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 Cabin fever is getting the best of you this month, don’t panic it won’t be long before camping season is here again. Until then, kindly remind your parents you need more exercise by chewing their belongings and bouncing off the walls. Capricorn: December 22 - January 19 Everyone seems to be down on you this month but rest assured there will be a pay off for your trouble near the 25th. In the mean time avoid that catty crowd harassing you. Hang in there and keep your whiskers up! Aquarius: January 20 - February 18 You will be tempted!!! Be careful, the younger crowd may leave Easter candy out...although they love it, you MUST deny temptation. Chocolate can be very toxic for cats and dogs, so ignore peer pressure and just say “no” to Easter sweets! Pisces: February 19- March 20 Start business negotiations early to avoid disappointment. Investors are bullish that Rawhide chews will be high on the Paw Market by mid month. Steer clear of tripe though it’s projected to be bearish.

Grande Prairie SPCA I have kisses just for you. My name is Tonka cause I’m built truck tough! I am a 7 month old, Shar-Pei X. My old mom and dad moved away and they weren’t able to take me and my brother Koda with them. I love to play with other dogs big or small, think cats are totally cool and kids -no prob- cause I love to play!! XOXO Helloooo everybody! How are you? I am awesome except for the fact that I have been here since December. I sure am glad I had warm place to lay my head when the weather was -50! My name is Chester and I am only 1yr old. I keep things under control here at the adoption shelter -I like to feel like I am in charge, but don’t tell the staff! Even though I love it here I think it’s my time to move on to a permanent family. I am crossing my paws and waiting for my new family to come soon.
Hi my name is Brigette, formerly known as Brutus. The staff here thought I ‘looked’ like a boy. But when one staff member decided to check it was discovered I just wasn’t man enough to be a Brutus! I am a 5yr old, Shep X, who loves to sit for treats. I am looking for that one perfect family to come and sweep me off my paws, of course I’ll do my part to pitter patter over their hearts. If you’re looking for the best friend you never had, come straight to the Grande Prairie SPCA and ask for me!

Hello, my name is Roxy and I am a 8yr young, Rotti X. I am a very good girl - at least that’s what everyone here tells me. I have let my staff here know that I only prefer to be around adults - the humans they call ‘children’ make me really nervous when they run around and make lots of noise. I really think it should be my turn to be adopted next!

Hi, hi, hi. The name is Andrea, yep that’s me. I am a 6yr old, Collie X, but have the energy of a 1yr old. I love to play, go for walks, run and jump and...wow there is so much stuff I love to do! Most of all I love the idea of being loved by my very own family. Come see me today!
My beautiful little Tiny crossed the Rainbow Bridge today. She was one Tiny Dlin of the lights Oct. 3, 1993-Feb. 15, 2007 and loves of my life. I feel blessed to have had her in my life and because of her, and all she gave and all she taught me, my life is forever changed. We will miss her always and will always be grateful for the time we shared with her. Marni, Kadlin, Bailey, Cessna & Mattan

Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) Everyone around here calls me Dexter, and describes me as the canine equivalent of a good-time frat boy. Without consistent rules and boundaries, I’m sure to end up in a dilemma and regret it in the morning. To keep me out of trouble, I’ll need a lot of fun stuff to do: toys to play with, a dog sport to keep me fit and my mind active, and don’t forget the chewies! Ideally I am looking for a house with dog experienced adults. My name is Matilda, and I’m a wayward young girl who lost her way on the lonely streets of Edmonton. I am quiet, curious, and easy to pick-up, but like most rabbits, I don’t enjoy being held for very long. Everyone seems to underestimate us bunnies but really we are exciting, wonderful, spunky, and quite clever pets. Ideally, I would love a big living space that I can run around in and explore a variety of toys while hanging out with my people. First off, I’m no girly man and my name is Pax. I have a ‘tude that won’t quit, making me both incredibly adorable and a bit of a handful. One moment, I’m a love bug...the next, I’ll let you know I’ve had enough of your presence, and it’s time to go hunt a toy or the unattainable bird outside the window. Sometimes I just like to survey my kingdom from the top of the couch and other times I engage in my favourite game, a staring contest with the dog.

Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS) Can you say dream? Can you say stellar? Can you say Bane? ...then I hope you can dial a phone cause I’m your guy! I am a 1yr old, male, Collie/Husky X. I love you two leggers; I stay very close and just want to do what ever you want to do! I have gorgeous hair that will need maintenance, but whose hair doesn’t -especially when having to look super stellar for the ladies! I have not yet met the cat but I really like the kids, does that help? My name is Chaser...and yes, in case you’re wondering they told me to look extra sad for photo time. I came from the Mischief Gang (litter!) and my full name is “Chaser of the cat”...but only cause I really, really like them! We are Pyrenees X and were born in late October .
Hi, I’m Zeff, AKA The Zeffer, I’m a 1.5yr old, Australia Shep/Catahoula X. I have been here at PARS since I was a baby. I was adopted once but later returned because I am just plain old picky about who I will go home with. I sure like the kids and people in general but I’m not terribly keen on cats. I like to sniff them out and bark at them until someone is alerted and does something about their existence!
Lucky to be alive is what they call me and I continue to earn that name every day! I am a 2yr old, male, Heeler/Husky X. I was attacked by dogs and dragged out from the bottom of the pile -but if you thought I looked bad you should see the other guy, is my attitude! The only reason I was loosing is because there were more of them than there was of me. I love you people, but I have an attitude and will even yell/bark when ya just ain’t movin’ fast enough for me! I actually get along with most dogs but, on occasion, if I need to, I will attack the biggest guy in the room/yard; just to prove my point...to be fair, I think they are very important points. “Large and In Charge,” “That’ a whole lotta of Dawg”, “Hale to the King “ These are the things you will hear when you walk me down the street, Hale stuck as a name. I am a 2yr old, big, big, big, boy. I love you people folk, but have an independent personality. I seem to be a Shep/Lab/Husky X. I‘m a gentle giant, and although I don’t get to mix too much with the other resident males, I have been a gentleman through the fence and nothing much seems to excite me. I have not had time in my hectic schedule to meet the cat, what with all the butt sniffing and peeing on things I have to do -but I am a real easy going boy so they have a hunch I will be fine.

Safe Haven Animal Rescue Edmonton Society (SHARES) My name is Halle and I am about 3yrs old. I am a very smart girl who is good with other dogs but NOT CATS –sorry to all you cat people out there but they are lunch to me! I am good with small and large dogs though, and love to cuddle with people on the couch when allowed. I have personality plus and also know my basic training commands. I love to be around people and would be a great addition to any family.
My name is Buddy and I have been great in my foster home. I am quiet, well behaved, and fine with other dogs. I travel well and know my basic commands. I did have a confrontation with an unaltered male, but it was probably envy. I do tend to be protective while on leash, but I’m working on that. I am about 2.5ft tall, 65lbs and around 5yrs old. SHARES volunteers call me Louie. I am a 2-3yr old boy from the local pound. I am quiet, calm, easy going and good with other dogs, big and small. I also travel well in the car. Truth be told, I’m just a big suck who runs from the grumpy, resident, Basset Hound in my foster home!
Smiles is my name and grinning is my game! When I get excited or in trouble you’ll see me smiling away. I am about 2 ft at the shoulder, with a beautiful red and brindle coat. My foster mom says I’m a very well behaved and quiet girl. I am crate trained, travel well in the car, get along with other dogs and always aim to please my people.
