My name is Banjo and as you can see I am as cute as can be. I got a terrible start due to some type of head trauma...guess when you’re born as a stray anything can happen. I never complained (I’m a TOTAL trooper), but turns out my jaw was fractured and I had major damage to my teeth. Since my cover photo shoot, I have had surgery to remove broken teeth and scar tissue over my little gums, and to clean up all of the infection...I wasn’t scared though, not me! My foster mom told me a secret about the tooth fairy and treats for being a very good boy. I am a feisty little surviver who loves to play hard...but when I sleep I look like a little angel. I like to attack slippers but only if you are wearing them at the time. Forget all those squeaky toys and just show me the shoe laces! I am not quite ready yet to go to my forever home, but I’d love to have something lined up for when I have a clean bill of health. Lap It Up! Our First Anniversary Dear Friends of Animal Rescue! Wow! It feels like yesterday PRM was just a dream, and now, a year later, we are proud to say that our work with Alberta rescue organizations has definitely made an impact. Thank you to all of you who have adopted a rescue and shared your joy with us at PRM. We are delighted with the amount of love, companionship, and happiness we have helped bring into your homes with the beautiful rescues who have adorned our pages. It has been incredibly busy for us and full of ongoing challenges but we are looking forward to many more years of success in our efforts. As we continue to get our name out and prepare for more growth, our main obstacles continue being a lack of advertising and space. We hope to see many changes this next year including expansion when funding allows, offering a subscription option and including southern rescue groups. We would like to express our appreciation to everyone who has helped keep PRM a reality. Thank you to our advertisers who help to make PRM possible, it truly shows you are companies willing to give back, and invest, in the community you do business in. Thank you to all of the volunteers and hard work the rescue organizations do. We know first hand this can often be a thankless and heartbreaking area to work in and commend you for your sacrifices in spirit, sweat and tears. We have also been very blessed to meet some extremely special people who have shared our vision and helped PRM carry through tough times. The Volskys, the kind folk at Dog Hair Inc. plus many other amazing individuals that have come together to support, inspire and assist PRM in various capacities. We will be forever grateful for everyone’s support and efforts. Last but not least, is you our reader, thank you for picking us up every month and spreading the word about “the little magazine that could.” We hope we have brought you a magazine that is both interesting and informative to pet lovers and guardians, as well as a resource for those looking to help or adopt a rescue. Please consider the value in advertising while supporting rescue efforts in Alberta, and remember, although the animals featured in PRM are safe in the arms of rescue, there are hundreds more, many in dire circumstances, waiting to fill a spot. Don’t buy your best friend, rescue one instead! Here’s to a wonderful Summer! The Pet Rescue Team We really appreciate your comments and feedback. Please feel free to email us directly at rescuemag@shaw.ca

PET PROMISE Thousands of years ago, we humans formed a covenant with our companion animals. We wanted them to live with us and to share our lives. Because of this our ‘pets’ lost most of their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became our responsibility to feed and care for them. While the animals have kept their end of the bargain, we humans largely have not. ~ Unknown

Rachel Sentes Book Review

Rating: Rescuing Sprite: A Dog Lover’s Story of Joy and Anguish

Find Your Lost Pet

Author: Mark R. Levin

Written by Mark R. Levin who is an American radio host and attorney, this is a poignant tale of a family who adopted a dog at the ripe old age of ten. Seeking a companion for their dog Pepsi, the owners stop in at a humane society’s foster program and although Mark is at first unsure of adopting a second dog, he changes his tune when he meets the soon to be named Sprite. Now I tend to avoid what I call “dead dog” books, those books that recount their now dead pet’s antics. This book is one of those. In fact, it’s spelled out on the back cover. I don’t like reading them because frankly I just hate crying like a baby at the end of the story. Yet, I picked this one up because there was something about the story of adopting a dog who was a senior citizen that appealed to me. So many older dogs are euthanized, or sit in foster homes or humane societies because people can’t see the benefit of adopting a dog that will only be around for a few years, so I wanted to read a book that might make a difference to that kind of thinking. This book might be the one to convince potential owners of the benefits of adopting the elderly. While the story itself isn’t remarkable, it is beautiful and touching, and anyone who has ever lost a dog will relate to the events illustrated in the text. With little black and white photos depicting the short life of Sprite, this book will certainly bring joy and a deeper meaning of how important it is to embrace life and family. At 216 pages, you could probably finish this book in one sitting, but what is written will stay with you always, and every time you look into the face of your favourite companion, you’ll smile.

PRM is now available for pick up at Chapters South Point Send us your comments about PRM by May 28th. & we’ll enter you to WIN a copy of Rescuing Sprite. (No purchase necesary) See page 3 for contact info. 4

hether you have lost your cat, dog or a creature a little less common the first organization you should check with is the City of Edmonton Animal Services. This City run facility is located at 12515-128 Street in Edmonton – a central lost and found location for all stray pets furry or otherwise. Animal Services focuses on returning lost pets to their owners. When a stray is brought to the City facility staff follows an animal care procedure. Veterinary staff administers first aid and basic care. Staff searches for license tags, micro chips and tattoos to identify pet owners. A photograph of the animal is posted on the City’s Pet Gallery and a lost report on PetLynx™. The report lists age, breed, found location, ID and identifiable features describe the pet for folks searching the lost pet network. PetLynx, an automated recovery system, is a lost and found network used by the City of Edmonton and other municipalities, community service providers and government

The PetLynx AutoMatch™ search engine is the only service that provides: • Dynamically generated Lost & Found Reports • Completely automated searching of all identification devices • Automated notification of possible matches by e-mail • Online interconnection with all agencies & shelters • Automated searches of shelter admissions and inventory in real-time • Found Reports for free • Lost Reports for free At the City of Edmonton Animal Services, animals with ID or purebred breeds are kept in the shelter for 10 business days. Strays without ID or mixed breeds are held for a minimum of 3 days. Daily, clerical staff works to find matches for the lost pets and trace all forms of ID to locate the owners. The best way ensure your pet’s safety if they get lost is to license the animal and ensure it has permanent ID such as a tattoo or microchip. PetLynx offers a lifetime service to help you find a pet. Call the City of Edmonton Animal Services at 780-496-3100 as soon as your pet gets lost.

Alberta Ferret Society (AFS) I am Mr. Biggs and I live up to my name. I have to act tough, because I didn’t get a very good start in life. I was kept in a cage in the back room of a pet store for 4.5 months...and I am only 6 months old. My foster mom is trying to teach me that I don’t have to bite to get what I want. She knows that I am just really scared of everything, and I am trying real hard to be brave. All the friends I have in my foster home are showing me a real good time and I am hoping whoever adopts me has lots of buddies for me to play with. Sammy here…I kind of have a boy name, but I am all girl! My foster mom says I am just the prettiest little thing. I came in with Biggs, but I am learning not to be a scaredy cat much faster than him. Most of the time I let my mom pick me up and give me kisses, but I still like to see her jump around when I nip her feet. Good thing I am so loveable…she even gave me kisses when I chewed up her roommate’s brand new shoes…and price tag!

Howdy, I’m back! You might remember me, my name is Paco and I was featured in January’s issue of PRM…I’m still waiting for you to give me a “forever home”! I’ve been working on my play nipping and I’ve been making good progress, which my foster family appreciates. I am about 1yr old and my beautiful, chocolate colored, fur has become thick and fuzzy.

Parkland Animal K-9 Society (PAKS) Hello World! I am the very handsome Hudson. I am a 3yr old, sweetheart looking for my own forever home. I was at the pound, but now I’m in a super foster home where they are teaching me what it takes to live in a house full of girls! I love to play ball but do get tired fast as I’m a tad overweight…but I’m willing to work on shedding the pounds if you are! You can just call me your Lady…or Spook! Could any feline be finer than me? I am a 1-2yr old looking for new accommodations. My current residence is a tad overrun with drooling dogs, and as much as I adore the attention my servants provide I would really like to find my new home.

My name is Flower and I can only go to the best home. I survived -40 degree weather, gave birth to 5 wonderful babies, am as loving as could be, and so deserving of a wonderful forever home. I love snuggling down on a pillow for heart-to-heart chit-chats and I’m a fantastic listener! If you can offer me a lifetime of love and affection please call PAKS!

Hmmm, so why am I called Tommy Trouble? Do I really look like trouble to you? I promise I will try not to live up to my name! I was born on February 27 and I’m already litter trained and eating kitten food. I am a real cuddle bug and will purr up a storm if you rub my belly…it may even give you luck!

Hello, I am Toby the bear. I just got sprung from the pound and boy it sure feels good to be free…I am a real free spirit and as happy as could be! I could see myself growing old on your front porch, lying by your feet on sweet summer nights. Can you make my dream come true?

Hey Dude! Far-OutFrankie here to add a little spice to your life! Me and my Bro, Tommy, are looking for new digs. We are typical little boys; we wrestle, bite each other’s tails and chase our foster mom’s feet! We also have a soft spot for the ladies. So, if ya have some grub and a place we can put our paws up give us a call.

Beagle Paws Rescue

Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart) I’m Rocco and I am a very good puppy, if I do say so myself. My foster mom thinks that I am very smart because I am housetrained and learning how to sit and be gentle with treats. I love to play with other dogs and even the cats that are in my foster home. I am trying hard to learn how to walk on leash, but there is just so much to check out! Maybe we could go walking together?

Hello everyone, Gruffy here I just moved to Alberta. They told me to go west young man, go west, so, ta-da, here I am. Now all I have to do is to find my forever home. They tell me that I’m about 2-3yrs old, however, I look more like a young puppy. You will see that I’m very handsome, quite small and a very good boy. I love people and other dogs…I’m not sure about cats or children because I haven’t had much opportunity to hang around them but I’m quite sure I’ll like them too. I’m still working on the housetraining thing but, lucky me, I share my foster home with two other Beagles who are showing me the ropes! So, now that I’ve made the trip to Alberta, I’m ready to find my new family. Please contact the kind people at Beagle Paws to ask if I could come and live with you.

(780) 455-4278 www.humaneanimalrescueteam.ca My name is Cookie and I am a Collie X with loads of energy. I already know how to sit, lie down and roll onto my back for my favorite treat – cookies! I am very good with kids and make sure not to jump on them so they will stay and play with me. Did I mention that I have lots of energy? People keep saying that I would be a great addition to an active family or someone involved in agility, whatever that is!

Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) My name is Daisy and I am around 1yr old. I came into SNAPS care when I was just a kitten from the pound. I can be a bit timid and have a very quiet nature, but I’m very affectionate once I warm up to you. I get along fine with cats, but I would prefer a home without small children. Please make me part of your family…I’ve been waiting a long time to meet you. Unfortunately, I was just returned to SNAP, through no fault of my own. I came in with a grey and white, male tabby who is also up for adoption. We’re both bewildered by our new home, but we’re trying our best to settle in. We would really like to be adopted together if possible. We’re both good natured, friendly and looking forward to meeting you.

I’m a tuxedo kitten named Hansel and I am about 6 months old. I came to SNAP with my mom and sister (Gretel) when I was a tiny kitten. I am fine with other cats and would love a home with my sister. A quiet home with a patient family to help me with my social skill would be great.

Everyone calls me Gretel. I am a gorgeous 6 month old, tuxedo kitten. I came to SNAP with my mom and brother (Hansel) when I was a tiny kitten. We’ve had a rough start and although we’re fine with other cats, we’re still quite timid and fearful of people. A quiet home, with a patient person willing to spend time helping me with my social skills would be ideal. One that would adopt me and my brother would be perfect!

Friday’s my name and looking for a home is my game! I am 8 months old and currently living in foster care. I’m not bothered by dogs as long as they’re not the pushy sort, and I could learn to tolerate other cats. I am grateful to be in a home with three square meals a day, but I would love to find my forever family as soon as possible.

My name is Whiks and I’m a charming, Labrador/Retriever X, around 2.5yrs old. I love to go for walks, play fetch and spend time with my human friends. Please call SNAP to arrange for a meeting and see if I’m the one for you!

My name is Silver and I was recently returned to SNAP. I have the most loving eyes, and the softest coat. I’m a bit frightened right now because I’ve had to leave my home, but I will settle in nicely when I find my new family. Call about me today!

My name is Charlie and I’m looking for a home of my very own. I came to SNAP from a vet clinic where I was being treated for injuries after being on the street. Though ready for a new family, I’m a little embarrassed by my nearly hairless tail…nothing a little time won’t fix though! Other than that I’m not bothered by much at all. I’m very calm, love affection and would prefer to be the only animal in my forever home. My name is Creamy and I’m told I am about 4 months old. I love dogs and other cats, but would do best in a home without small children. My favorite hobbies are napping, playing with my toys and daydreaming about finding my forever home. I’m currently living in foster care and have bonded with Precious who is also up for adoption. In a perfect world we’d be adopted together… what a beautiful pair! The nice people at SNAP call me Jiggs. I am 2yrs old and anxious to find a home of my own. I’m playful, affectionate, love to sleep on the bed, enjoy a touch of catnip now and again, and love human companionship. I am not, however, so keen on living with dogs. Do you have a canine free home where I can come and love you forever? Elvis is in the house again!! I am very playful and fairly well behaved. I even seem to have had some obedience training. I’m not so new around here anymore and would love for my forever family to hurry up and come for me. I am a very nice boy with a laid back personality. I promise I won’t disappoint you if you’ll just give me a chance.

Field of Dreams

The Off-leash Park..are you ready?

You’re all dressed up and nowhere to go except for the usual boring route around the block that you and your dog have walked a million times before. Then the idea pops into your head to go to the off-leash park. We are fortunate in the City of Edmonton to have many off-leash locations. In the 1989 movie, Field of Dreams the phrase “If you build it, they will come” has proven itself to be true of our off-leash parks. However, we’re not talking about baseball players as in the movie, but rather ball-chasing dogs and their happy sociable owners out for an afternoon of doggy talk with their peers. Making the decision to join this club is like deciding if your young teenager and friends can be left alone while still expecting all to be well when you get home. For some, the answer will be an immediate yes, and for others there would be a huge cast of doubt. The key, in the decision making process, is to know if your young teenager displays enough responsibility and trust for you to have the confidence that they will not bring harm to themselves or others. You can apply this train of thought to your dog. Consider these questions: Is my dog socialized enough to cope with new situations, and not be fearful or aggressive towards stimulations often encountered at the off-leash park like new people, other dogs, joggers, or cyclists? A fearful dog can become skittish and bolt leaving you doing the chasing. Can I control my dog off leash? Commands such as “come” and “stay” are essential for your dog’s wellbeing. Will your dog reliably come when called, even if he did spot a rabbit heading for the bushes, or a cat heading for the busy road boundary? Calling your dog to come in your own backyard is a different ball game than being in the big outdoors. If you’re not sure, it’s best to get the advice of a trainer, or practice recalling outside your own boundaries using a long training leash, which allows you to give your dog some freedom while still being in control. Remember, obedient, trustworthy dogs are a product of a lot of time, patience, dedication and commitment. Confidence that there is no risk to the safety of your dog and the public is what is going to determine your readiness to set foot into the big wide yonder called the off-leash park…If you build it, you can go.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society SCARS “Until he came to SCARS he was another stray dog with no name and no future. But now he has a second chance and a name. “

We call him Buddy Buddy is a young dog that has suffered terribly during his short life, but despite his neglect he has remained a sweet and loving boy forgiving of all that has past. Unfortunately, he is only one example of the animals that come into our rescue requiring medical care and surgeries. As a rescue, we go above and beyond to help ease the suffering and to truly give those that come into our care a Second Chance at a life full of love and happiness. Buddy’s surgeries came at a high cost, but to Second Chance Animal Rescue, his life is worth every penny and it seems Buddy’s ready to shake on that thought too! Read Buddy’s story at www.scarscare.org

Buddy, is well and ready for adoption, but will require a special home.

SCARS

is a non-profit, charitable, organization, dedicated to reducing the number of homeless and abandoned animals in Northern Alberta. SCARS is completely volunteer run and usually intakes rescued animals who are destined to be shot (in pounds up north) or otherwise euthanized. Since receiving charitable status we have saved and found homes for nearly 2000 abandoned, neglected and often severely injured pets. We also work to promote responsible pet ownership, the importance of spaying and neutering, and community awareness.

TO HELP: Become a member, volunteer your time, foster a rescue, collect/donate supplies or put up posters to give more exposure to deserving pets... there are so many ways to make a difference!

There are usually 140-160 rescues in our care and we believe there is a suitable home for all homeless animals, young or old. SCARS does not selectively intake, regardless of the animals medical conditions or age. We feel that every animal deserves a second chance at health and happiness. As a result, our medical expenses can be overwhelming; however, the rewards are worth the challenge. The satisfaction of seeing a rescue regain strength, regain health, regain trust and, finally, gain a forever home is a wonderful reward.

SCARS does not receive funding. We rely solely on memberships, donations, sponsorships, and fundraising efforts. All donations go directly to the animals in our care and are very much appreciated. Tax receipts are issued for donations over $20.00.

We do not have a shelter. Our private foster homes provide the animals with warm shelter, food, exercise, and tender loving care (something that so many of the animals we receive have never experienced) until a permanent home can be found.

One of the best ways to help the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society is to have your pet spayed or neutered. Each year millions of animals are euthanized due to lack of available homes. After all, for every home you find for an animal that you have bred, a home is lost for a rescued animal.

To our supporters, participating vets, and especially our volunteers, thank you on behalf of all of the animals you have saved! We hope you all feel as proud as we do to be part of such a special organization.

My name is Jeckyl! I love to work, try hard to please and I am house and crate trained. I love other dogs, people (and little 2 leggers as you can see!) and I am ready and eager to learn. I can already sit, stay, wait, shake, down, off, leave it...and lots more! I’m even checking out some agility equipment - for a newbie I’m pretty amazing! I need a new home who will keep my training up, exercise me lots and lovelovelove me forever…oh and a canine sibling would be a plus as I really hate to be left all alone. Everyone calls me Zack and if you love Labs or Border Collies then I may be the dog for you! I am a sweet, quiet, kinda guy - you know the ones the girls all love! I am about 50lbs, wonderful with other dogs, good with cats and listen well. I come off a little shy at first but that’s just my way of getting to know you. Now…quit hesitating and pick up that phone! My name is Sunny. SCARS was heartbroken to hear I was shot in my leg and left without medical attention, it could not be saved. I’m also missing half my tail and a piece of my ear…minor in the grand scheme of things though, I’m in heaven now! I am great with everyone, good in the car, house trained, and have nearly mastered the stairs already. I am a lovely, gentle fellow with the courage of a champion and the soul of an angel. I am seriously an over sized teddy bear! Everyone calls me Chewy and I don’t know how many teddy bears like to play ball but I LOVE it! I’m good looking, smart, friendly and listen well. I need someone who can play with me lots and who really enjoys us big guys. My foster home has 80 acres and I never wander off, probably because I’m too busy dropping the ball at peoples feet.

OUR WISH LIST

Hello, my name is Kona and I was found in the ditch scavenging for dinner in a trash bag. I am sooooo skinny...you can’t pinch an inch here that’s for sure! I’m a very gentle, Shep/Lab X and I love dogs…but I will chase the felines! I tend to stay as close as possible to my people. If you think you have a heart big enough to make sure I never feel like, or eat out of, yesterdays trash again please give SCARS a call....they know there is a home and heart meant just for me out there! Oh and please cross your paws I’m not pregnant!!!! It’s another one of those stories you hate to hear, but it’s worse to live it folks so toughen up out there would ya! …besides it has a happy ending and I have my second chance! My name is Joey and when SCARS picked me up they took me straight to the vet. Turns out I was hit by a ski doo. Sadly, it was discovered I had been suffering for quite awhile, it was an older injury and it was just too late to be fixed. So, they removed my front leg…you would think that would get me down but I feel great! I am a wonderful, handsome, 8 month old, Collie X. I am great with other dogs and even tolerate the cat. Through this whole thing I have been nothing but gentle and friendly.

Hi, my name is Layne. I’m about 2yrs old, 50lbs and have seen more than my share of rough times. I just moved into my new city foster home and I’m loving life being so close to people. I’m just awesome in my crate and I walk really nicely on my leash (even for the kids), but I’m not a big fan of other male dogs. I’m not terribly bothered with the cat though -maybe he will decide we can be friends some day!

Check me out. I’m jumping through an old farm house window! My name is Lola and I came from the pound with my daughter, Lexi. I am a very sweet, quite energetic, smart and in the right home I will be an amazing family member. I am only a year old and not too big for a Lab (60lbs). I am an absolute jewel, however, I do chase cats, so a cat-free home would be best.

My foster family calls me Sabre. I am a 1yr old Collie X, with personality PLUS, especially when it comes to who I find acceptable for friendship! I have been awesome with my foster family but briefly considered eating the vet tech…in my defense it’s kind of scary in there! I love long walks and eating is a very special sport I hold close to my stomach. I don’t mind female dogs (not sure on males yet), but still have issues with dogs around my food -it’s not a team sport after all!

You can call me Finn! I’m feeling all better now and my hair has even grown back! Boyo-boy am I ever handsome! I am very friendly and have been good with other dogs, but I really don’t like cats. I’m about 70lbs, house trained, great on and off leash, and love attention. I’m all good and healthy to find my own family now, so if you’re thinking of adopting me please call soon. I can’t wait to be the center of someone’s world!

All donations are very appreciated! SCARS is in special need of: Puppy/Kitten Food (kibble & canned), Large & Extra Large Kennels and Cleaning Supplies Thank you for your consideration, please call (780)466-SCAR to arrange pickup or drop off.

My name is Cruz and I’m a pound special, which in SCARS language means EXTRA special. I am an 8 month old, 40lb, extremely loveable, crate trained, super duper smart, Shep X. I like other dogs and love going for quad rides! Given the chance, I am going to be a fantastic companion, please keep me in your thoughts.

One Person’s Garbage Is Another Dog’s Treasure Please think of the animals in need while you are spring cleaning. Many groups are in constant need of essential cleaning supplies to properly care for their animals. And...while you and your neighbor are cleaning out the storage or garage, keep your eye open for used items such as kennels, bowls and toys. In closet clean up, watch for used towels and blankets...it’s an easy way to justify finally letting them go! Check rescue organizations websites for wish lists and contact them directly to ask what they are in particular need of. Every item can make a difference!

Northern Alberta Society For Animal Protection (NASAP) Here I am again…I don’t get it…why haven’t I found a new family?

My name is Asia. My foster mum says I am a beautiful, smart, active, and all around wonderful girl. Sometimes I play shy for a bit but I come around. I am housetrained, love to play with other dogs and know the commands for sit, down, come and stay…most of the time! I also love to go for walks, especially to the off-leash park where I can play with all my friends. My name is Monkey, and like my name, I am a very curious fellow. I’m a 7 month old, gentle and cuddly boy. I was found starving after being abandoned by my owner…thank goodness for good neighbors! I am now enjoying a nice warm bed and three square meals a day. I love having a full belly! Hello Alberta! My name is Xander and though I’m a bit older at 7yrs (which is really a spring chicken in the small dog world) I’m still chock full o’ beans and have lots of bounce! I like kids but I’m best with the older ones because of my size and the spring in my step. I have a great personality and would like YOU to take me home so I can get settled into my new life right away. My foster home loves me dearly but they can’t keep me forever. Hey everyone, Poco here…I’m just a little 15lb boy, but I have lots of energy and just love to play with the big guys! I am only 4yrs old, used to children of all ages, friendly and get along with everybody. I am very outgoing, love games and enjoy making friends. My foster mom says I am a Chihuahua/Jack Russell X and that whoever adopts me is very lucky! I’m Georgia, a beautiful, 1.5yr old, Siamese X. My coat is very soft to the touch and I also have lovely blue/green eyes that can light up any room. My previous owner had to move and could not take care of me anymore, but I’m excited about sharing my affection with new, wonderful people! I am an indoor-only cat and I’m very well behaved. 10

Hi there, I’m Mystery and I’m 1-2yrs old. My name and past are actually the same. I was abandoned in a retail store. Sadly, I had a sore eye, was very thin, still nursing and found without my kittens. I have since filled out and fully recovered. I purr the minute you touch me, I will even take your hand with my paw and move it to my head! I’m smart and very appreciative of all the attention I’m now receiving. I also get along with other cats given a proper introductory period. Hello, my name is Dandy and I am a 4yr old, neutered, Chihuahua/Jack Russell X. My favorite place to be is on somebody’s lap being made a fuss of. I loved to be cuddled and made to feel safe. I am not big on long walks and quite happy to spend the day looking out of the window and watching the world go by. I am used to young children and have never hurt anyone. My ideal home would be fairly quiet with lots of snuggle time with my new family! They call me Rogue, but don’t let my name fool you…I am such a sweet little redhead! My foster mum says I’m an absolute dream girl! I don’t want to get lost so I always listen when my foster mom calls me and come straight away. If you’re looking for a dog who’s beautiful, smart, active, a good listener and a great little cuddle bug, then look no further! I’ll just be here waiting for the phone to ring… Hello there, my name is Shaw and I am 6.5yrs old. I came to NASAP when my previous senior owner became ill and moved into a nursing home. I am a very affectionate, sweet guy who will love you to pieces. I’ll be putty in your hands if you give my cheeks a scratch! I’m a very easy going fellow, my only catch (though I don’t really think it’s a problem!) is that I do not really care for other cats. Please contact NASAP about me!

Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS) Cruze is the name -cute is the game! I am a Daschund X, so I will be small and cute, but I will also be a handful! You should research my breed before calling PARS because we tend to be a tad stubborn and often a bit yappy…but with proper training I will be your very best friend! Hi there, my name is Dex! I am a happy, housetrained, Collie X and known to be quite the character here at PARS. I love anything and everything, even the dogs who don’t want to be friends. In fact, the more they dislike my company the closer I stick! I am the kinda guy that grows on you…no matter how long it takes those dogs become my friends, I bet I can make friends with you too!

I came to PARS the very day the Oprah show discussed puppy mills. I have been named Harpo and I signify the heavy puppy season starting up. PARS figures we are likely Shitzu/Jack Russel X, but we are still young so it’s a little too early to tell for sure. PARS did not have the benefit of seeing my mom or dad so really it’s all guess work…let’s just call us cute crossed with super sweet! My name is Angie, and I am a beautiful lady that likes people, kids, dogs and going for long walks…please note I did not say cats. OK ya caught me -I am a little too eager to meet cats! I will mind my manners if you tell me to, but chances are if it starts in a chase I won’t be able to resist. Other than that little quirk I am completely lovely.

Chinook Winds Greyhound Rescue Foundation My name is Felice and life has been such an exciting adventure so far! First I was a racer, and then I went back to the farm to raise babies. (my puppies were the cutest!)…and now I am a retired racer looking for a forever home. I hear I’m going to be able to live in a house with people I love, with lots of play time and no cats. Oh and lots of walks cause I LOVE meeting all kinds of people. In fact, when I meet someone new, my tail doesn’t just wag, it helicopters so hard I almost lift off the ground! I’m so excited; I can hardly wait to get adopted! My name’s Maddie and I used to live on a farm, here in Alberta, where I was supposed to hunt coyotes…but I’m NOT a hunter! You can hardly convince me to chase a cat, let alone a coyote! I’m only 1yr old, so I have lots of energy. The other day I overheard some dogs at the pet store talking about this thing called “agility”. It sounds like a hoot! Since I’m really quick and have terrific jumping skills, I bet I’d be “greyt” at it too. I like other dogs and adore kids because I can reach their faces to give them lots of kisses. Mostly, I love my foster mom, and when she goes out and leaves me at home, I howl and cry. I just don’t want to be abandoned again.

Aries: March 21 - April 19 Communication is the name of the game for Arians this month. This means instead of yapping your whiskers you better try and listen. Give others a chance to be heard and they’ll think you’re the cat’s pyjamas! Taurus: April 20 - May 20 The stars are choosing grace as your focus and challenge this month. Try to move slow, with purpose, and choose your exits wisely. Trashing the vet clinics office while trying to reach their top shelf in a panic is not going to help you leave any sooner! Gemini: May 21 - June 20 Whether you’re a fish, cat, dog, reptile, ferret, horse or bird...it is important you Gemini’s hold your head and tail up high. Ignore the cat calls and resist the temptation to settle the score...you already know it’s not worth it! Cancer: June 21 - July 22 Cancer Cats this is your lucky month. Clean litters, trash dinner treasures, and catching house pests are right up your alley. Hang out in the garden and choose your prey, the moths and spiders don’t stand a chance! Leo: July 23 - August 22 The stars have spoken and it’s your turn for romance, possibly around the May long weekend. Fortunately your neighbours, for the most part, are wise enough to spay and neuter too -so it’s a green flag for you! Virgo: August 23 - September 22 Clearly everyone is always up to a good roll around in something smelly, but use caution on timing as it may be a turn off for some two-leggers. Success will have you grinning like a Cheshire cat, play it safe and keep your little paws clean! Libra: September 23 - October 22 April showers bring May flowers! Be sure to sniff the neighbourhood fire hydrants and trees often this month. Important information will be circulating in the neighbourhood and you will want to be on top of the latest rumours. Scorpio: October 23 - November 21 It’s often difficult for you Scorpios to stay organized. Use May 12th, Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, as a friendly reminder to discuss and plan for the unexpected...after all it really could happen to you! Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 It is high time to take a stand! Whether you are the cat and the dog keeps eating your food, or the dog -whose people have placed you in pink booties...it’s time to say “no more”. Just be sure you mean or they will never respect your decisions.

Hi! I’m Mesa and I’m known as a confident and spirited girl. I retired from racing when I tore my Achilles tendon. It didn’t heal properly, so now my leg doesn’t bend very well. When people see my leg, they always sound like they pity me…but I wish they’d just get over it, because it doesn’t bother me at all! I still keep up with the other greyhounds –and often still lead the pack! I expect other dogs to mind their manners, but if they are polite, I really enjoy their company. Cats don’t bother me—I just ignore them. I really like my crate, but my favorite thing is when people pet me and tell me how beautiful I am.

What’s In The Stars For Your Pets This Month?

Capricorn: December 22 - January 19 Get moving, get busy and get with it! It’s time to get active, shed some winter fat and get in shape -get off the couch all you Capricorns! It’s going to be a challenge for many of you but absolutely attainable for all. Sooner you start the sooner you’ll finish! Aquarius: January 20 - February 18 It is a magical time for you mid month when the weather is warm. Spend some time alone sunbathing on that window perch or front step, and remember to take time to stop and smell the neighbours. Pisces: February 19- March 20 Several opportunities will be coming up for grabs in the next few months. Prepare yourself by getting up to speed on your manners...it will come in handy and you must be ready to seize the moment, preferably with community support.

Paws and Claws Animal Rescue Foundation I showed up where I was unwanted and went without food for 2 days. When I was rescued, I was lying listlessly in the dirt, barely raising my head…but after 2 days of real meals I became a happy little jumping bean! The vet also gave me a clean bill of health so I’m ready to find my new family. I am a sweet, affectionate, and grateful little German Shep/Sharpei X. I love to snuggle into necks and give happy kisses. My name is Eastwood and I am only around 6 months old. I am fairly small (below the knee) but still have some growing to do. I have had it pretty rough so far. I was found scared, and hungry, and still cringe from hands, likely from being mistreated. I am being fostered by a dog trainer to help socialize and teach me that hands can also be gentle. I have mange but the vet gave me medication that will soon take care of that!

Frankie is my name and playing is my game. I am a people-loving, outgoing tyke who is into everything! I love other cats, and will play-attack anyone. I am looking for a home of my own with people who value personality+. I like to jump on your back when you are bending down and really enjoy racing people across the room. Call about me soon, I can’t wait to play!

Well…here I am on my throne! My name is Shacunda and I am a very intelligent, eager to please girl…I would be amazing with professional training. I weigh around 6575lbs and am a German Shep/Akita/Staffordshire X. I adore kids and do well with male dogs…but cats, small dogs and other small animals just aren’t my thing. I am a very loyal and loving girl with a great deal of potential!

Edmonton Reptile & Amphibian Society (ERAS) Well…here I am hanging on my rock! I am a Leopard Gecko. I can’t go to a new permanent home quite yet because I am receiving medical treatment. I have an eye problem resulting from poor husbandry conditions, but I will be ready soon and would love to have a new home lined up. Hey everyone! My name is Charlie and I am a California King Snake. I am 3yrs old, my last owners moved and had to give me up. I am not very accustomed to being handled…they call me “spirited” and say I need an experienced owner. I hope to find a home who will keep me forever.

Safe Haven Animal Rescue Edmonton Society (SHARES) My name is Brody and I am a 5 month old Jack Russel X with the cutest little spots on my ears. I am very sweet, loving and already know how to sit and lie down. I am also good in the car and like other dogs. I don’t mind the cats either, actually, I find their cat door especially useful when I feel like going out to play! I came pretty shy, but I am turning out to be quite a character. Although I still act like a pup here and there, I am actually 10+yrs old. My name is Fonzy and I am a Cairn Terrier. As such, I am fairly sure I run the household and will if given the chance! I am housetrained, fairly quiet and don’t even try to get on furniture. I get along best with small dogs and enjoy walks and lying in the sun. I am an older gentleman so I would prefer a home without young children. My name is Taffy and I am 5yrs old, I came with a broken pelvis but with lots of care and tlc I have healed up nicely. I have a quiet, laid back, sweet and loyal disposition. I don’t chew much and toys don’t excite me…really all I want is the odd walk and your company. I am a devoted pet and do become quite protective of those I hold dear. I don’t mind quiet, mature dogs but those puppy and party-dawg types are just too much for me. My name is Purdy and I am a sweet natured, petite, Shep X looking for a family to call my own. I’m a well behaved girl and I’m already kennel and house trained. I am not a big bunny fan and can’t go to a home with rabbits. I am an absolute joy and deserve a great new home to call my own.

Most Dog Bites Are Preventable National Dog Bite Prevention Week is May 20th-26th The Canadian Safety Council estimates that in 70% of dog bite cases, the victim knew the dog and of that, 25% lived in the house with the offending dog. Half of those injured are children. The rate of dog biterelated injuries is highest for children ages 5 to 9 years and injury rates are significantly higher for boys than girls. Dog Bite Quick Facts: • Children are more likely to be bitten than any other segment of the population • More than 40 percent of severe bite victims are children under age 11 • More than half of all children will be victims of a dog bite by the time they reach age 12 • Dog attacks account for one-third of all liability claims on homeowners’ insurance policies. According to the Western Insurance Information Service, the insurance industry paid out more than $1 billion in dog-bite claims. • Dog bites to people of the male gender are approximately two times greater than the incidence involving females. • Dogs that are licensed with an identifiable owner are implicated in the vast majority of dog bites (when compared with strays). • Dogs not known to the victim account for approximately 10 - 20% of all reported dog bites. • Dogs between one and five years are involved in more dog bite incidences than dogs older than 6 years. Male dogs are more frequently involved when compared with female dogs. • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document that a chained dog is 2.8 times more likely to bite than an unchained dog. • Canines not spayed or neutered are three times more likely to bite than sterilized ones. • The majority of dog bites to people are inflicted to the lower extremities followed by bites to the upper extremities including the head, face and neck. Preventing Dog Bites: Teach children basic safety around dogs and review regularly: • Do not approach an unfamiliar dog. • Always have children ask permission from the owner and their parents before petting any dog • Do not run from a dog and scream. • Never approach a dog who is confined behind a fence, within a car, or on a chain • Remain motionless (e.g.,“be still like a tree”) when approached by an unfamiliar dog. • If knocked over by a dog, roll into a ball and lie still. • If a dog attacks, “feed” him your jacket, purse, bicycle, or anything else that you can get between you and the dog. • Do not play with a dog unless supervised by an adult. • Never tease any dog by poking at them through fences or car windows or reaching your arm through to pet them • Immediately report stray dogs or dogs displaying unusual behavior to an adult. • Avoid direct eye contact with a dog. • Do not disturb a dog that is sleeping, eating, or caring for puppies. • Do not pet a dog without allowing it to see and sniff you first. • If bitten, immediately report the bite to an adult. Hinton & District SPCA Handsome Herby, that’s me! I am about 1yr old and would much rather be perched on a window ledge at your house. Given the chance, I am going to be a fantastic companion!

My name is Hitchhiker, I was out on a bush road and wouldn’t have survived had some kind people not stopped to check and see if I might be alive. They decided I needed to hitch a ride all the way into the Hinton SPCA. Since then, I have wormed my way into all of their hearts.

Grande Prairie SPCA Hey there, the name’s Alley. I am a 2-3yr old girl and I love to stretch out at far as I can and then just pass right out. It would be awesome if I could totally stretch out in the middle of your living room, or maybe in a special cat scratch tree meant just for me, or...well you get the picture. Jump-and-2-and-3-and-Jump-and... Oh hello everyone - it’s me Farrah! No, no…not Farrah Fawcett, although I am kinda pretty. I am only 4 months old and just love to run, play and jump - wow this is so exciting I just can’t help myself. Come visit and let me wow you today! My name is Frosty. I am a 3-4yr old, handsome, fellow with frostbitten ears. They tell me I have been here a month now. I don’t mind too much. It’s great to get good food, lots of water, a clean warm bed, toys to play with and lots of visitors to keep me and my cat posse company. But…something is still missing, I need a family and home to call my own forever. Please call and ask about me. Ginger here. I am an adult at 7-9yrs old, but I still have many wonderful years ahead of me and can’t wait to find that forever home everyone is talking about. The buzz around here is I will get my very own family to love, a caring home, good food and a warm bed!

Hey what’s up my peeps? The name is Hunter and I am a 2-4yr old sweetheart looking for a new home. I have been through some rough fights, and harsh times, but come on…look at my picture…do I look like a fighter to you? I am just looking for as much love and TLC as the next cat!

Cute, cute, cute, smart, smart, smart, and sweet, sweet, sweet! That’s me, my name is Windy! I am less than 1yr old and the most adorable dog you will ever meet! I am a playful and intelligent Standard Poodle/Golden Retriever X, around 55lbs. I love to have my tummy rubbed and going for car rides. My new family must have a securely fenced yard with an indoor bed, lots of love and affection, along with plenty of daily exercise! I also really want to keep up my training. Howdy! My name is Wilson and I am just as sweet as a little Beagle can be! I am playful, lovable, and totally adorable. I ride well in vehicles, and love playtime, squeaky toys and doggie crackers. I came very underweight and in need of lots of TLC. I already know how to sit and my favorite thing to do is pretty well anything you are doing. If you can provide a loving, indoor home please come by for a visit! Beautiful, athletic, affectionate, and gentle… just a few of the words people around here use to describe me! I am a 1yr old Coon Hound named Stryder. Dewy is one of my brothers. I already know how to sit, sit pretty, shake a paw, and lay down. I am a scent hound though and we are not well-suited to a life off-leash…our ears close when our nose opens! I am looking for a loving indoor home with a big yard and an active family. My name is Dewey and I’m a 1yr old Coon Hound. Stryder is one of my brothers but we have had different upbringings and I tend to be a bit shy because I have not been exposed to as many things. True to our breed, we follow our nose, so I would like a fenced yard in my new home. I would also really love a family with a little experience, patience and sensitivity. -Oh yah, and a nice warm house, we have short coats so we can’t be left outside long in cold temperatures. I am willing to learn and eager to please, come on by to meet me!
