May 2007

Welcome to pet rescue magazine! We are very excited to bring you the second issue of our Northern & Central Alberta edition. There are many rescue organizations operating in and around the Edmonton area and hundreds of unwanted animals in Alberta looking for a second chance in life. We are taking our natural passion for animals, our compassion for the unwanted, our personal experience with rescue groups, as well as many years of education & experience to bring you pet rescue magazine. Our mission is to encourage adoptions of rescued animals, increase awareness of unwanted pets & the rescue groups who care for them, while promoting responsible pet guardianship. Whether you live, love, play or work with animals we hope you love pet rescue magazine! Things you should know about pet rescue magazine: • It is important to note that pet rescue magazine donates space to the rescue groups free of charge & is available to the public free of charge. • All animal rescue groups, shelters and humane societies are welcome to participate in pet rescue magazine. When space is limited organizations will be rotated to ensure everyone gets exposure. • Each month one rescue group will be featured and our future goal, once established, is to give a portion of net proceeds from that month’s advertising revenue to this group. • Although we are doing this for all the right reasons, we are not non-profit…our pets have to eat too! Please support the businesses that advertise with us. Without them pet rescue magazine would be unable to showcase these precious animals to be viewed by all of you. Kindest Regards The Team at pet rescue magazine

For more information on any of our adoptable pets please call (780) 707-5753 or visit www.sharesrescue.com Hi my name is Boris. I am a neutered male who is about 1-2yrs of age. I am good with other dogs and very loving and affectionate. I don’t like riding in the car as I get sick. I can be a bit of an escape artist and have been know to climb over a 5’ wooden fence, although I had no problem staying in metal dog kennel. I’m Bosco, a big, cuddly, friendly, teddy-bear! I’m about 6 years old, but still a very energetic, outgoing, and loving boy. I am well behaved in the house, and I seem to understand that playtime is for outside. I tolerate small children very well (even the 2yr old here!) and get along with other dogs too. I am housetrained, crate-trained and love car rides. I understand basic obedience commands as well. I am very gentle and loving, and I would like nothing better than to sit in your lap all day to be cuddled.

My spot is sponsored by the following message:

Happy Mother’s Day Mummy Love Ella & her new baby “scissor” Eric here, I’m a lovely kitten and I’m about 8 months old. I am very affectionate, good with kids and I love to cuddle. I’m good with other cats but I do not care for dogs. I am litter trained and I travel well in the car.

Layla Hinton SPCA www.hintonspca.com My name is Layla and they just can’t say enough good things about me! I am a gorgeous, medium-sized, spayed, oneyear old girl and I can not wait to find my very own loving family. They tell me I am a Coon Hound cross who is incredibly smart, well-socialized, athletic and sweet. Training is going well and I already know my basic obedience commands, being very food-motivated is sure to help with future training too. I love to romp and play hard with my friend Sienna, and with a harness, I am fairly good on leash as well. Life has not been that easy so far but I am adaptable and affectionate - two qualities which are sure to make me a valued member of any new home. I am looking for a family who can devote lots of quality time to me (with lots of indoor time as my short coat makes me unsuitable as an outdoor companion for a large part of the year). A securely fenced yard is important too. I need a family who will make me an integral part of daily activities. If you think you may be the companion for me, please call (780) 865-2800 for more information.

This is a special place for younger readers to write and tell us all about their pet(s). Watch to see if your story, poem or drawing is published. These very special drawings were submitted by Mary and Sara Kardash

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society www.scarscare.org They call me Butch! I am about 1 year old and weigh in around 55-60lbs. I have lots of energy to spare! I love people even the little ones, I’m even ok with other dogs! SCARS thinks I might be a Correlian Bear Dog X but no one knows for sure. I came from a Northern Alberta pound and I listen very well. I am looking for a active family with children to play with and maybe even a canine sibling too. Do you think you might be my forever home? Please call (780) 675-3018 Thank You.

Nelson here, I am such a friendly guy! I just love people and want to be with you all the time. I have also been great with other dogs even the little ones. I am about 2 years old and around 60lbs. My story began quite awhile ago when the SCARS girls were out doing feedings. One of them fell head over heels for me. However, since my turf was the playground (FYI to all you Moms out there the kids don’t like your sandwiches but I do!!) and I was strong/healthy in comparison to all the others strays in this area. She just could not justify my rescue. Someone’s watching over me though because I was shot in the ear and made my way into SCARS because I needed medical attention. Good thing they were a lousy shot! So my one ear does not stand like the other now, but hey I’m alive and they say my true forever people will find me even more endearing! I would say I am a Collie crossed with all sorts of good stuff! A little Bullwinkle friendliness and some Einstein brain too! I have lots of energy so make sure you bring your running shoes or plan for the dog park! Please call (780) 675-3018.

She kept telling me how wonderful I was while she was bathing me, and grooming me. She told me I was the cutest dog ever. In fact, she is even trying to help me learn agility already. Just the basics, but boy oh boy do I ever like it. I love playing in daycare with all my friends, and I have learned a lot about playing nice with dogs and people. I know I am irresistible so you better hurry and call about me! I am a young Collie cross and weigh in at about 40lbs. Please call (780) 471-2275.

Well, hello there. My name is Roxie Foster. I am a beautiful 18 month old German Shepherd Husky mix, maybe some Labrador mixed in for good measure. I am a pretty mellow girl once I am settled in. I ride excellent in cars and I’m good in the house. I am looking for a family who can devote plenty of time to teaching me proper doggie etiquette. I was probably taken away from my mom at a young age so I never had a mom to teach me how to be a good dog. I am good with other dogs once I get to know them, and have been good with cats too. If you would like more information about me please call (780) 983-8545.

An active home would be best for me because I do enjoy and need my excercise. I think I would really like the off leash park one day, once I have a family who has trained me. I sure love my foster home but I can’t stay here forever and I just know there must be a special spot just for me out there somewhere! Please call (780) 675-3018. My name is Junebug. ets are commonly taken to their veterinarian because they are itchy (pruritic). There are a number of reasons dogs can be itchy. Two of the most common causes of pruritis are atopy and food allergies.

A

topy Atopy is an inherited predisposition to develop allergic symptoms to airborne particles. Common allergens include pollens, dander, grasses and trees. Any airborne particle can potentially become an allergen. These allergens are inhaled or land on the skin and incite inflammation. Atopy often has a seasonal occurrence, especially if the pet is allergic to airborne particles outside of the home. They can however, be allergic to things inside the home as well. These allergies tend to begin between the ages of 1-3 years of age. Over time, the pet may become allergic year round. Up to 50% of these atopic dogs can go on to develop food allergies as well. Atopy is associated with irritation to certain parts of the body and all dogs will not necessarily show signs in all of the commonly affected areas. These areas include ear infections, around the eyes and mouth, feet, legs, armpits, belly, groin, and around the rectum. Often, the pet does not have much for lesions on the skin, but they can be quite red and irritated. The treatment for atopy includes bathing to wash off the offending allergens, supplementation of omega fatty acids (a natural anti-inflammatory and to supply building blocks for healthy skin), antihistamines (not all dogs will respond well to these) and drugs like prednisone (a corticosteroid) and cyclosporine to suppress the immune system somewhat. Allergy shots may also be used to manage a pets atopy. There are 2 tests that can be done to determine what the dog is allergic to. The first is an intradermal skin test, where a number of potential allergens are injected into the skin and the resulting reaction is compared to controlled injections of saline and histamine. The second test is to take blood so various antibodies can be examined to determine what the offending particles are. Both methods have their pros and cons, and results do not exactly corre-

spond to each other. From this information, allergy shots can be made which slowly hyposensitize the pet to the resulting allergens. These injections are usually done by the pet owner, and often require 6-12 months to begin working. The initial vials of allergy serum are the weakest, and the patient will receive an increasing amount of allergen over time, following a strict schedule. About half of these animals will have a good response, 25% will be so-so, and approximately 25% will not respond to the injections at all. Itchiness due to atopy usually responds rapidly to prednisone (anti-inflammatory steroid), however, this drug has been associated with a number of side effects including increased drinking and urination, increased hunger, panting, lethargy, pancreas inflammation, stomach ulcers, encouraging the spread of infections or parasites, muscle breakdown and elevated liver enzymes among many others. Prednisone, is therefore not a great long-term solution, but may be useful for periodic flare ups if the side effects in the animal are not too bad.

F

ood Allergies A food allergy is a reaction to food, usually a protein that the pet eats. These dogs are generally a bit older at first presentation than atopic dogs. The dog can have similar signs as atopy, such as itching and licking at the paws, flank, groin, rectal area, neck and ears. The itching can be year long and you may see additional signs such as chronic vomiting, diarrhea, gassiness or excessive abdominal rumbling. There are 2 approaches to resolving food allergies. The first is offering a novel protein source in their diet. That is, having the dog eat something it has not been exposed to in the past. This requires a careful history to ensure that it is truly new. The other is a diet consisting of a hydrolyzed protein source, one that is chopped up such that the animal’s immune system has difficulty recognizing the protein. These diets are often only available at your veterinarian, as over the counter diets may not be appropriate. Alternatively, owners can prepare home-cooked diets, but they should be balanced by a veterinary nutritionist. These dogs do not typically respond well to corticosteroids (steroids that can help control inflammation). It is important to note that once on

or the past two years the communities along 118th Avenue, from NAIT to Northlands, have been working together to revitalize their area. Their goal is to create a vibrant avenue that is rich with places to shop, have coffee or just take a walk—a place that is safe, and clean with a sense of pride and community. Judy Allan Avenue Initiative Coordinator

This spring, that work continues. A group of dedicated volunteers will be conducting a series of exciting events on the Avenue, including a major clean-up and graffiti removal, a garden and alley-beautification workshops. Once the cleaning and beautification was taken care of, they decided it was time to have some fun—the idea of “Avenue Goes to the Dogs” was born. In celebration of all the dogs (and their families) who live in the area, community volunteers and local pet businesses are organizing an amazing day of dog fun! There is a lot of buzz, excitement, community and business support being generated for the event. Not only do we love our community, we really love their dogs! So, join us on June 9th, at the Alberta Avenue Community League (9210 – 118th Ave), as The Avenue Goes to the Dogs! From 10 am – 4 pm our many canine community members can play games, enjoy a treat, participate in a “wiener bob” or get a “paw ‘cure” (that’s a puppy pedicure, to you and I). The rest of the community can join their canine companions and watch dog events (including agility and freestyle competitions, and a ‘rally o’), or enjoy a gourmet hot dog. There will also be information on pet health, nutrition, and grooming and general pet care. This is a Community with a big heart and so it was no surprise to me when it was decided that the less fortunate dogs should not be forgotten. Therefore, local Dog Rescue Organizations will be at the event, just in case someone is looking for a new family member. Admission is free but money will be raised through raffles, dog games and hot dogs and will go to support local rescue organizations.

Take A Walk In Their Paws Nicole Johnston CPDT, Is the owner and a certified trainer at Dogspaw Daycare and Training Centre, Edmonton

Dig & Chew There’s nothing to do!

I

f your dog’s barking these words then here’s some help to overcome those troublesome habits. For most of us, our backyards have become jungle gyms to our dogs. It is where they go to play, to potty, and to bury treasures and it’s where we go to relax and take in the summer sun. If your dog is the equivalent to a garden demolition crew then it’s time to take action! Even though you might think you have tried training your dog you have probably only scolded him for doing something that was unacceptable to you but perfectly natural behaviour for your dog. As with any form of true training, it will take time and consistency to help regain the beauty in your yard. Start now, and be prepared to put in the time and effort – it will pay off in the end with a lifetime of enjoyment for both of you. Remember your dog did not learn all of these habits in a day; he certainly is not going to break them in a day. So let us take this one-step at a time.

D

igging We humans usually find digging to be a completely inappropriate behavior, but our dogs find it to be a lot of fun! Dogs think that the flowers that you just planted are there for them to replant, monkey see, monkey do after all. So if you have not trained your dog to stay out of the flowerbed then you cannot expect them to understand it is off limits. Running after your dog screaming is not training – the dog has no idea what you are saying, he probably thinks you are a lunatic and your neighbors will be thinking the same! Dogs dig for various reasons. First you will need to figure out why your dog is digging then work on training them not to. Dogs dig to bury bones, and return later to dig them up again. Dogs also dig cooling hallows in the summer and warming pits in the winter. Pregnant dogs may dig dens to have puppies. Many will dig out of boredom and some 10

pet rescue magazine

to escape, but mostly dogs will dig just for the fun of it. So what do we do? To prevent digging while you are not home keep your dog indoors and carefully supervise all outdoor playtime. Keep him on leash at first and if your dog goes into the flowerbed give him a firm “no” and move him away from it. Build your dog his own digging pit (similar to a child’s sandbox) and fill it with various treasures that he will love to discover. Praise him for digging in it. Make sure your dog is spayed or neutered so there is no need to dig a den to have puppies.

C

hewing Chewing is a good and healthy behavior for dogs. It keeps their teeth clean, jaws strong, aides in relieving anxiety and boredom and for puppies; it relieves the irritation and inflammation while they are teething. However, as with digging, dogs also chew for pure entertainment. We humans just do not appreciate when dogs choose their chew toys themselves, whether indoors or out. Lets face it, when your picking up lawn chair fragments, bedding plant roots and mauled BBQ utensils the backyard is just not looking pretty! Preventing inappropriate chewing will also take time and consistency. While you are away, leave your dog in his confinement area with a couple of chew toys to keep himself amused. When you are home, encourage your dog to play with his own toys and praise him when he does. Put various chew toys in your dogs digging box in the back yard and change them up often. Be sure that you are not leaving toys just lying around (in the house or yard) otherwise, the toys will become less interesting to the dog. Give your dog various healthy treats to chew on like frozen stuffed Kongs, Bully Sticks and raw bones.

P

otty Training Many people just let their dogs out into the yard all winter and allow them to go potty wherever they want. Then in the summer time, they expect the dog to use just one corner. Well, it is easy enough to train this behavior but as with all training, it will require time and consistency. If you want your dog to use only one area of your yard to do his business then you will have to put on a leash every time he goes outside and keep him in that area until he goes. When he goes reward him with lots of praise and treats (while you are still in that designated area) and then

May 2007

allow him freedom. At regular intervals (depending on age), be sure to put your dog back on leash and take him back to that area to go again. If you like, you can even add a command to it. By only doing this when convenient (ie. weekends or when there is good weather),you will be confusing your dog and he will find it difficult to understand what you actually want from him. To have a yard that you can enjoy with your dog, be sure to give him the training he deserves so he can understand your expectation of him. Dogs really do want to please their owners, but verbal commands are a second language to them. It will take time for them to understand – you did not learn your language in a day; do not expect your dog to. Give your dog the time and consistency he needs and soon you will both be enjoying the summer outside, relaxing in your own back yard.

Northern Alberta Society For Animal Protection (NASAP) Boo Who??Oh Yeah That’s Me!! Yes I am Boo and that’s my sister below Cleo. We are both 4.5 year old domestic shorthaired females. As you can see I’m black and white and my sister is all black. We have been raised together and love each other very much. So about me....I love to be loved (i.e., talked to, petted and being held like a baby against your shoulder). I will lie to have my belly gently rubbed while I purr loudly. I enjoy looking out the window and watching birds, especially magpies. I also love to chase flashlight beams and play with small plush toys on strings. My sister and I are both indoor only cats and are not comfortable with dogs. Neither of us has spent time around small children. I am bonded with my sister Cleo and I would love to be adopted with her. For this reason, we can both be adopted for the price of one. Hello, my name is Cleo. You’ve probably met my sister above. I am a 4.5 year old domestic short haired female black cat who was raised with my sister, Boo. We were surrendered to NASAP when our owner had to move out of the country. I am a very affectionate and wonderful companion. I love to be brushed and enjoy being petted. I also love to play; I will chase a fuzzy ball and bring it back like a little dog. My sister and I are not too comfortable with dogs and have not spent any time around small children. I have bonded with my sister Boo and we would love to be adopted together. For this reason, we can both be adopted for the price of one. Hi there, I am beautiful Brooklyn. I am a nine month old black lab cross. When I came to NASAP, I was very much a puppy and very active. I am now house-trained, crate trained, leash trained and very affectionate. I am great with other dogs around, love playing and have not shown any aggression towards dogs or people. However, I do need a lot of exercise, I am very lively and my new family will have to continue my training as I need a guiding hand to keep me on the straight and narrow.

I’m Maverick. I am a very

energetic, happy dog who is desperately looking for my forever home. I really love people and am always by your side. I would do really great with someone who is home for most of the day. I don’t have a great track record for getting along with other dogs and cats, and would probably do best as an only pet. I am coming along very well with basic commands, but need someone who is able to help me polish those rough edges – I am very open to bribes!! I am also house trained and will let you know when I need to go out. I am very well behaved in the car and love to go for car rides! Did I tell you I am German Shorthaird Pointer and that I am 5 years young? Fred’s my name and finding a home is my game. Seriously folks I am a very sweet, orange, male tabby cat. I am approximately 2 years old. I was a stray living on the streets in southeast Edmonton until a kind woman began feeding me and took me in. I am very friendly and get along well with other cats. I have probably been beaten up by another cat as I have a scratch on my nose which is healing. I am a gentle, easy going guy that is looking for my forever home.

My name is Sunny and I am an Aussie Shepherd X. I have been with NASAP for quite some time and have settled down a lot since coming to my foster home. I am an active, smart girl with a strong will and I get along with other dogs. I need an owner with a stronger determined will who is consistent. I would do well as a working dog in agility/fly ball sports or search & rescue. I am very focused, look for your approval, doing quite well on a leash and I sit for treats and my toys. I love to carry things around in my mouth but I am not a chewer. I need to be exercised or I can be quite hyper with all my built up energy. Also, a fenced yard with a 6ft fence would be ideal. I love to be close and I will lay on you for more attention. I am approximately 22 months old, and weigh in at a healthy 55lbs or so.

My name is Sadie. I am a beautiful, 10mth old, purebred Bluetik Coonhound sweetheart!! Unfortunately my owners had to surrender me due to living in a duplex. I have a very gentle personality and am still very much a puppy. I enjoy being with you at all times and look for you if I can’t find you. I am also good with children having lived with them in my original home. I need to go to a home with a family who understands the Coonhound breed. I would be a wonderful addition to the right family. pet rescue magazine

Grande Prairie SPCA

The Tizzie Bazalcat Shelter for Homeless Cats Unwanted and Overlooked

www.gpspca.com Up, up and away!! Hey everyone, my name is Amy and I am just a baby girl, only 5 months old. I am a brown tabby, DSH. I love to play with all the toys they give me here at the shelter. As you can see from my picture, they must think I am an airplane or a bird! If you think that I am just the cutest you really should call 780-5384030 to get more information on me! Chico is the name and playing is my game! I am black, white and fluffy. I am 10 months old and neutered. The girls and volunteers here at the SPCA love to take me for walks and of course I love to go for walks too. They think I am so cute... I think so too! I am looking for the right family to come in and adopt me. Do you think you might be the right family for me? My name is Raffi and I am a bit shy. I am an 810 month old male Chocolate Lab X. The girls here at the SPCA have been working really hard to bring me out of my shell and I am pretty sure it is working. I used to just sit at the back of my kennel and look at them, but now I want to be the first to be noticed! I am very friendly and I would love to go to a new family with children. I like to be around other dogs so if you have a dog, I might want to make a new friend. Please come in and see me...here I’ll give you my number it’s 780-538-4030, just ask about me, Raffi! 12

Marzipan, Moxie, Catkin and Chiquita have been at our shelter for two years and have never even been considered for adoption. Why? Who knows! They are all charming, healthy, well-mannered, sweet girls with an awful lot of love to give. They are all spayed and their shots are up to date. Yowsers!! I am Catkin and if you’re looking for action I may be your girl! I am an outgoing, feisty cat who, as a very small kitten barged into someone’s house and made it clear that I had no intention of leaving. Sadly, they had no intention of letting me stay, however they were kind enough to bring me to the shelter. I have basically grown up here – and grown and grown – some may even say I am a bit chunky! So no free feeding for me I’m afraid. I hold my own against other shelter residents who try to move in on my favourite resting places..they are mine after all. If you want some personality, look no more. Wait until you see what I do to catnip toys, let’s just say those little mice never mess with the Catkin again! All in all, I am just a lovely young girl with loads of personality and years of love and entertainment to share. My name is Chiquita and my people had to bring me in because the other household cats were just too mean to me. Here at the shelter we are allowed to roam free, but we all have our own kennels with private litter boxes. I am a little nervous around other cats, and often opt to stay in my kennel after breakfast, hiding behind my litter box until I am invited out. I absolutely adore and really look forward to my one-on-one time every day, but it’s still no life for a cat. I desperately need a proper home where I can feel safe and have someone who loves and cares for me like I deserve.

If you’d like any information about adopting any of our of animals, please call us at (780) 675-4400 or visit us at www.3.telus.net/public/chasbaz/

My name is Marzipan and I was abandoned in a house when my people moved away. Thankfully, my kind neighbours brought me in to the shelter. I am about four years old and have a wonderful, mellow, easygoing nature. I have been in the shelter through renovations and even a move to a bigger facility and I just keep taking everything in stride. In the summertime I love to sit on the veranda in the sunshine, and in the winter my favourite place is the big blanket near the woodstove. I’m Moxie and I am a stray who sought refuge with a nice lady whose husband wouldn’t let her keep a cat…darn my luck! My greatest desire is just to feel safe. Around here I like to find safe places where no one can creep up on me. The best part is I have discovered that the safest place of all is someone’s lap…who knew? I am quiet, unassuming and usually I just wait patiently to be noticed…but I do like to be noticed!

the fact is:

Cat saliva contains a detergent that helps keep their fur clean.

Behold....I am Shacunda and I am temporarily residing on my throne here in Red Deer.... Other gals have moved in but are not able to sit on my throne! I get along fine with the male dogs though and love children. I am very intelligent girl and they keep telling me I would be amazing with professional training. I love people and I am always ready & eager to please! I know a good thing when I see it and give my foster family a great deal of security out here. I like on the job of “protecting my home”. I do have a bit of an issue with cats and other small dogs/animals; however, I show some progress when I am cued. I am around 70lbs and have already been spayed. If you are looking for a very loyal and loving girl with a great deal of potential, please contact my volunteer foster parent Jodi at (403) 343-2282 or e-mail jodi@pawsandclawsanimalrescue.ca. My name is D-Fer and I am a 6 month old German Shepherd cross. I am very intelligent and would excel in obedience training/classes! Affection is pretty well my middle name and I love children. I weigh approximately 40 lbs, but will more than likely double that when full grown. Crate training and car rides are fine by me and I am already neutered and up-to-date on all vaccinations! I’m not too sure whether I like cats or other small animals yet but we are slowly and very carefully testing me out. For the time being I prefer to err on the side of caution, so I would prefer a cat-free home. I too am being fostered in Red Deer. For more information please call Jodi between 9am -9pm at (403) 343-2282 or e-mail jodi@pawsandclawsanimalrescue.ca.

PAWS AND CLAWS Animal Rescue Foundation Treasures Galore! at Paws And Claws Yum! Reese’s Pieces right here in Red Deer! I am six months old, spayed, house trained, exceptionally cute and sit on command. I’m still working on that leash thing, but I come when I’m called. My vaccinations are up to date and the vet says I will be about a 50lbs when I’m all grown up. I love getting attention and being petted, especially on my belly. Please call Janet at 780-2643216 or e-mail janet@pawsandclawsanimalrescue.ca for more information on this precious face.

How do you do? My name is Miss Camilla because I am such a lady and I have the kindest soul you will ever find. I adore children and insist on being a lap dog! As for training, my recall is great and I listen well to cues. I am full of character and provide a lot of entertainment. It is a joy to watch me play my favorite games which include snow sliding, flashlight chase and snow drift diving! They tell me I am such a wonderful girl, my only hang up is cats & I don’t see eye to eye! I only weigh around 50 lbs and I’m not very tall...I barely come up to my foster parents knees! I am so darn sweet they often refer to me as an angel...any family would be blessed to have me that’s for sure. How could anyone resist these gentle, golden eyes! For more information please call Jodi between 9am -9pm at (403) 343-2282 or e-mail jodi@pawsandclawsanimalrescue.ca.

My name is Clover and I am being fostered in Sylvan Lake. They found me on the side of the road, in need of medical attention and a loving home. It’s suspected I was likely thrown from a car. I am just so sweet and loving they think at one point I may have been someone’s beloved pet. The real injustice comes with the condition I came in ...extremely undernourished to the point that my spine, hips and ribs are all very visible. I appear to have troubles with my hips as though they are either dislocated or have been broken at sometime. I do not sit as a cat normally would, but rather squat. I am also missing my entire tail, there does not seem to be even the remotest sign of a stub present. The vet said other than being under weight and missing all my whiskers on one side, all is good. My hips do not appear to cause discomfort and the vet thinks I will soon make a full recovery. I was vaccinated and will be spayed after I put on some weight and settle in. Please call Tish at (403) 887-6222 for more information or e-mail janet@ pawsandclawsanimalrescue.ca.

Winslee is my name & hugging is my game! They keep telling me I have become the beautiful girl they knew I would be. I am very loving and have a very gentle nature. I am full of personality. I often sit high and mighty on top of my doghouse, waiting for my foster parents to come home. My favorite game is running over at chow time and dumping all of my food into a pile, its so much fun! Not big on cats or little critters but no one’s perfect. I am about 60lbs and all about my people and getting their love. SNAP

Alberta Ferret Rescue (AFS)

Spay Neuter Action Program

Oodles Of Unconditional Love

Hello everyone! Look at my beautiful children I am so happy they are safe and sound. Now I can concentrate on taking care of them instead of foraging for food. I was rescued from northern Alberta by a kind lady working in a camp. I was starving when I came to her with a bad leg. After feeding me for a month, I gave birth to these six little bundles of joy. The kind lady contacted SNAP and drove us all the way to Edmonton. SNAP had my leg X-rayed and found out that it has to be amputated. That’s ok though, because the pain will then go away. I’m going to have the surgery done once my babies are weaned. My babies were born Febuary 22, 2007 and will be up for adoption at eight weeks of age. I know SNAP will make sure they all find loving homes and that they will never have to go through what I have. If you are interested in me or my babies please contact SNAP at (780) 968-0025.

My spot is sponsored by the following message:

Rachelle & Kerry, Congratulations on your first baby (without fur) we know you’ll make great parents!

Jamie & Ryan

I am an approximately nine month old male. I was born to a stray cat that was taken in by a nice lady. My foster mom describes me as being a very affectionate, quiet laid back kind of guy. I am neutered, vaccinated, de-wormed and tattooed. I’m ready to go to my forever home. I can’t wait for my family to find me.

Hi my name is Angel, because I’m just that! I guess I am considered a senior citizen in ferret years but I have lots of life and love to share still! I am 5 and a half years old so that’s a bit of a concern but I still enjoy interacting and exploring. When I first came to AFS I was a little bit nippy as I had not been well socialized and was being caged for long periods of time. These days I am very loving and way better adjusted too. Please remember, ferrets sleep a lot and can be caged during sleep periods but they are not cage animals. We need at minimum of 3-6 hours (preferably more!) out-of-cage time every day depending on our age. Thats us, Tina & Beau! We hate to brag but we are very well behaved and gentle, we even get along well with cats and dogs. I should mention that Beau can be a bit like a bull in a china shop and is always going full throttle at about 90mph. Not me though, I am quite laid back, ladylike & tend to stroll. We are both around 3 years old and looking for a place to call home. My name is Brutus and this is my gal pal Noel. I am about a year and a half and Noel here is three. Being that I am so young, I am quite excitable, like to roughhouse and may nip hard during play. We are pretty bonded so we must be must be adopted together. Also, Noel recently had surgery for an adrenal tumor but has recovered nicely and is back to her bubbly, sweet, self. We really need a home that has ferret experience...preferably a free roam environment without caging.

For more information on AFS and adoptable ferrets please call our hotline at (780) 447-3336 or visit us at www.albertaferretsociety.com

My name is Bob, I am approximately eight months old and very large for my age. I am described as being very outgoing, extremely talkative and affectionate, but I can play quite hard. I am neutered, vaccinated, tattooed and de-wormed and ready to go to my forever home. Hi, my name is George. I am a three year old neutured male that was surrendered to SNAP by my previous owners as they could no longer keep me. I am usually friendly but my patience is wearing thin being in this cage. My vaccinations are up to date and I am desperate to find my new family. 14

Hi we are seven month old female siblings who were dumped out in the country. We made our way to the closest acreage only to be confronted by a lady who did not like cats. She drove us to the vet and told them to euthanize us. Luckily the vet did not want to do that and called SNAP. She even offered to drive us to Edmonton. We have been spayed, vaccinated tattooed and de-wormed. The vet who helped us had only one request; that we would be adopted out together. SNAP is complying, so to adopt both of us, the adoption fee is $180.00

Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS) For more information on any of our rescues please visit us at www.prairieanimalrescue.org or call (780) 536-3868 Well, I have quite the story to tell. My name is Dolph and I sadly have been the victim of severe abuse. When I first arrived no one could even get near me, I was just not sure if they were safe. I was so afraid and being that I’m quite large, that was an issue. I have come a long way though and learned how nice you two leggers can be...who knew? I am not the bravest dog around but I do love my cuddles now. Caring people, regular meals and a safe home...I think I may have won the lottery! The only thing better would be my very own family. My name is Getta. I am a new arrival here at PARS, but so far my foster mom says I have the personality of an angel. I can not get enough attention, especially from the kids! I get along well with the other dogs and even like those crazy cats. I’m a mid-size girl, & only a 1-1/2 years old. I love my foster home but I can’t wait to find a special home with my very own family.

SAY CHEESE

Hello! My name is Francine and I just had to smile for the camera! I am the friendliest girl around. I am good with other dogs, cats and of course I love people! When I came to PARS I was very skinny and brought my 8 babies with me. The have all since been adopted to loving homes but I’m still looking for my own. They think I have been having babies all my life, so I never really got the chance to play. I am making up for that now! Howdy! My name is Knub and I’m a midsized guy that gets along with everyone. Everyone tells me I am so handsome with all my super cool stripes! I have short hair so I need an indoor home, preferably with a warm couch to cuddle on. Check the PARS website to see more pictures of me playing with my resident wrestling partner, Jack.

My name is Zeff, aka The Zeffer! I am a highenergy dog, but I am a Border Collie; what do you expect? I am a really good boy and I listen well. I am great with kids, other dogs, and I’m even okay with cats. I am eager to please, so look me up on the PARS website. I’ll be waiting!

Yes that’s right folks my name is Goose not Moose!

I’m a very good, albeit large boy. I am a Great Pyrenees X and stand about 25” high. Because a year old I still have some filling in to do. I seem to be good with other dogs and I love having the kids around. I recently met the cats though and they still scare me! Let me know if I ‘m your kinda guy. With this smile who could resist.

An Apple A Day continued from page 7

these new diets, treats must be avoided You may start to see some improvement in 3 weeks, however the pet should stay on this diet alone for 2 months before a true assessment can be made. It is important to establish the diagnosis so the correct therapies can be selected. Age, breed, history (age of first onset, seasonality, gastrointestinal problems, parasite control strategy, response to therapy, etc.), physical exam findings and lab tests such as skin scrapings, fungal cultures, acetate tape tests and biopsies all contribute clues to the diagnosis. Concurrent conditions such as secondary bacterial or yeast infections must be treated as they contribute to pruritis and can cloud the diagnosis of the underlying problem. Each pet is different, and requires individual strategies for optimal success. Remember, allergies are not often cured, but they can be properly managed to offer your pet the best comfort and quality of life possible.
