My name is Pebbles and this is my best buddy Stevie. I am a 3yr old American Bulldog...and everyone tells me I’m the prettiest girl around. I am quiet, laid back, and easy going. I enjoy being with people and I’m very gentle with children. I also get along with other dogs, as long as they’re not alpha dogs cause I like being the boss! I love going for walks and will require a home with a fenced yard and no cats. Please call SNAP for further information!

Lap It Up! Time is running short for our Volunteer Award submissions! With World Kindness Day on November 13th, this is a great opportunity to think of those who share their time and efforts to show kindness for animals in need. Acknowledge someone you know who volunteers or supports animal rescue. More information can be found on page 14. We want to thank The Northern AB Pet Therapy Society for the recent Heroes award we received for our work with Pet Rescue Magazine. It was such an honor to be recognized by such an admirable organization. As true believers in animal assisted therapy we sincerely value the efforts of the society in promoting pet therapy and implementing such amazing programs in our community. Other winners included Susan Fyfe from Rescue100 (featured in our July issue), as well as both Konrad Grzeszczak and Dave Gosse for rescuing a kitten stuck in the engine of a vehicle. If you have not done so already, please check out their website at www.pettherapysociety.com for more information and to see how pet therapy is helping in your community. Until next month... To Dock or not to Dock The Controversy Continues

Thousands of years ago, we humans formed a covenant with our companion animals. We wanted them to live with us and to share our lives. Because of this our ‘pets’ lost most of their natural skills to fend for themselves. It then became our responsibility to feed and care for them. While the animals have kept their end of the bargain, we humans largely have not. ~ Unknown

Rachel Sentes Book Review Hi my name is Mrs. Dash and for a very good reason too. You see I am what they call a feral cat so I’m looking for a nice warm barn home or garage that I can snuggle up in. I mind my own business and will learn to trust you for my meals if you can please give me a chance.

Bad Dog! True

Tales of Trouble Only A Best Friend Can Get Away With

by Doug Brown and Kaori Brown How Bad is your Dog? Was the question posed to hundreds of dog owners through a website called www.baddogs.com or the Bad Dog Chronicles, and the answers were skillfully organized into a fun collection of stories about the trouble canines can truly get into. Each of the stories is told in first person (or dog) and their unique personalities shine through as they relate their adventures. The book contains photographs of the offenders and in some cases the end results of their misdeeds (Cooked Garbage is one of my favourites). Damage is listed anywhere from “Dignity Destroyed and Social Embarrassment” to a whopping $32,000 dollars in damage from leaving a bathroom door open. The book is divided into chapters with titles such as Plumbing, Doggy-Do, Flatulence, Off to the vet ( a personal favourite of mine), and Beyond Categorization. These tales will provoke laughter and amusement, and you’ll soon be adding up all the bad things your pet has done in comparison. This book makes an excellent gift for a new puppy owner, anyone thinking their fence is secure, and for those who think their dog is a bad one. Thanks to my sister who pasted a photo of my dog into the middle of the book as a gift…Damage: Still counting!

Can you believe that I was ever a stray, left alone in the world to fend for myself? My name is Molly and I am about 8 months old. I am house trained, travel well in the car, I know how to sit, and come when called. I have had a hard life though and have some very bad battle wounds to prove it. That is all behind me now. I have a great foster home and will be spending my time at Doggie Daycare with my foster mom and her two dogs. The only thing that could be better than life like this is a home that I can call my own.

My name is Breman and Kinson is my brother. A nice lady was feeding our mom, she had 5 of us kittens. Sadly someone hurt our littermates right outside her backyard, so the kind lady took us into her care. She kept two of my siblings. Kinson and I found another home, but sadly our new mom had to move and could not take us with her. We are almost identical and would be best going to an indoor home together. If you want a couple of cats that are super quiet then we are your boys! We are fixed and ready to go to our new home.

Ranger’s idea of playing is taking my toys and running off with them. I like dogs, cats and kids too. If you would like to come meet and play with me you will have to bring your own toy.

Hi my name is Ranger. I’m an 8 week old Collie/Lab X. My foster mom says I’m very handsome, playful and friendly. I love playing with my sister but my favourite activity is being cuddled. I would do well with other dogs, cats and kids. If you would like to play tug o’ war with me please call.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) I am a 50lb Collie X named Josie…and a very pretty one I might add. They think I am just under 1yr old but not sure. I love people and have been great with other dogs. I am one of those girls that just wants to be with you. I will even try helping you do chores by carrying the food bucket. My name is Scamp, and as you can see I am a Terrier X. I only weigh about 40lbs and I am very sweet. I have been great with other dogs but I’m not too sure on the cat thing. Although I’m still pretty new around here I’m doing very well. I’m a pretty easy going kinda guy looking for a home to call my own. If you are looking for an energetic, super cute canine to join your family -then look no further. My name is Scruffty (don’t forget the T in there!) and I am about 2yrs old. I am most likely an American Eskimo X…possibly with some Sheltie. I am around 30lbs and would do best in an active home that likes to go on long walks or runs. I am fine in the crate overnight and good with other dogs…but in my humble opinion…the only purpose for a cat is to chase it up a tree! This is probably a good time to mention I need a fenced yard because I just love “the chase”. Your new best friend is just a phone call away, come check me out! Look at me I’m finally safe! My name is Zahara and my foster mom originally saw me at a Northern Alberta pound. I was pregnant, but sadly her truck was so full already that she had to leave me behind. Before she went she moved me from a dog trap into a clean dog run and sang to me to help me feel more comfortable. Another volunteer from SCARS came back last weekend though…I crawled on my belly to her and she loaded me into her truck (with a bunch more rescues of course!). I was so shy and unsure but took just 2 days and I started to come around. Everyone here knows I’m going to be an excellent mom and a short while after my pups are old enough to be adopted I too can go to a forever home. I’m Astro! Let me tell you a bit about myself. I have the cutest, scruffiest Terrier look ever. I am VERY SMART, have oodles and oodles of energy and I love to play. I am great with kids & other dogs, but do need an experienced dog owner who will keep my mind active. Nothing like a bored AND smart dog!

My name is Ingrid and this is Greta. We were in PRM last month but did not think our photos were too flattering and wanted to show you all how much better we are doing! We came into SCARS in terrible shape with horrific, open sores caused by Demodex. Our foster parents have been taking great care of us and we’re working hard on fattening up; we get dog food 3 times a day as well as ground beef from my foster Grandpa’s farm, salmon oil, dog cookies, apples from the nice neighbors, antibiotics in ricotta and peanut butter…we especially love peanut butter! The vet says it may take a couple months for our hair to grow back in but SCARS says we are already two of the most beautiful creatures ever!

Mortimer here, but you can call me Morty. I am a 50lb Collie X and it seems that I have already suffered some trauma in my young life. It seems my front left leg was broken at some point and my back right leg also seems to have something wrong. No worries, SCARS will do their best to fix me right up, so don’t let this stop you from coming to meet me! I get along well with other dogs, love people, and seem to already be housetrained. I am also busy learning that a crate is a safe place, that the leash is not a bad thing and that cats are 1/5th my size and may not actually want to play with me. I am only 2yrs old and would just love a family to call my own and cuddle up with.

Savannah is what they call me. I’m a 5r old German Shepherd X. I was a little shy at first, but I’m quickly learning to trust my new foster family. Though I haven’t had any previous training, I’m eager to please. I get along with the other dogs and I’m not bothered by the cats - unless they run, then the chase is on! If you could box me up and take me home please call SNAP at 780-968-0025

Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) I’m known as Miss Personality! I am 4yrs old, full of vim and vigor and I can’t wait to have my own home to run and play in. I’m full of energy and I have lots of stories I would love to share with you (like where I misplaced the tips of my ears). I’m a big boned beautiful gal, sporting a gorgeous tuxedo coat. Not much is known about me as I recently came from the pound and I’m just not saying much. I do seem to be a dominant female though, so I would do best as the only cat in the house. I’m all dressed up with no place to go until my new family finds me…is it you? Shamus is my name and I’m 10yrs old. I’ve had a rough time since my owner died, and unlike Leona Helmsley’s dog, I was not left millions in a will. I spent some time on the street and was taken in by a kind lady when she saw me sitting in the middle of the road in the rain. Now I’m waiting to find my forever home, where I can learn to love again. I’m a really nice boy looking for a loving family…could I be your loving ball of fur? Pirate is my name and waiting for my new family is a pain! Come on already… where are you? I’m ok with dogs, cats and kids. Due to medical concerns, I would like to be an only cat…or I guess I could also be adopted with either or both of my housemates Pumpkin and Max. I’m Pumpkin! I am a friendly, quiet and non-demanding lap cat. My foster family say’s I’m great with dogs, cats and kids. Due to medical concerns, I would like to be an only cat…or I guess I could also be adopted with either or both of my housemates Pirate and Max. 6

Sweet, timid, affectionate all describe me…that and super duper handsome. Some say I’m grey but really I’m more like silver…or platinum! I too just arrived from the pound and I’m just the tiniest little guy ever. I love attention and toys, but I’m a bit bewildered by all the other cat roomies around here. Winter is coming and I need someone to curl up with by the fire. Could you love me forever? I just came from the pound. I was living as a ruffian on the street (even have some scratches to prove it!) and always looking for a meal to get by…but not anymore! I’m like a little vacuum cleaner with my voracious appetite. Everyone says I will one day have my very own people and they will not only give me regular meals but they will also love me forever and ever. Seems like a dream to me but so was food not too long ago so I’m dreaming big! I’m very passive, easy going and can hardly wait for someone to adopt me and make all my sweet dreams come true!

My name is Savannah and I am a 5yr old German Shepherd X. I was a little shy at first, but I’m quickly learning to trust my new foster family and I’m fitting in very well. I haven’t had any previous training, but I’m eager to please and already learning to walk on a leash. I get along with the other dogs and I’m not bothered by the cats…unless they run -then the chase is on! My name is Hazel and I’m a Duck Tolling Retriever X around 2yrs old. I weigh about 30lbs and I’m quite anxious to meet my forever family. I am a loving, affectionate and adorable girl…I melt everyone’s heart. I’m a bit timid and can startle easily with loud noises so I’d do best as the only animal in my new home, without small children. A retired couple who can give me all the attention, patience and understanding I need would be the perfect match!!!

Hi! My name is Sherbert and I have a wonderful orange creamy colored coat. I arrived at SNAP with my six kittens in tow, but now I’m ready to find my forever home. I am a bit shy and timid, but still hold my own with the other cats. I’m a feisty little thing, all five pounds of me! Though traumatized by life’s recent events, I’m sure I will be a very sweet and affectionate kitty once I have a chance to settle in my new home. My name is Max and I am 6 months old. I like people, but I do frighten easily. I’m playful and ok with dogs, but would not do well in a home with small children. Due to medical concerns, I would like to be an only cat…or I guess I could also be adopted with either or both of my housemates Pirate and Pumpkin. www.spayneuteractionprogram.ca

To Dockor not to Dock The Controversy Continues By Rachel Sentes Contributing Writer

The process of docking and cropping involves the amputation of portions of an animal’s tail or manipulation of the natural curve of the ears. There are two ways to dock a tail. When a dog is little the tail has a rubber ligature wrapped around the base which constricts the blood supply to the tail for a few days, until it falls off. The second way is to sever the tail with a scalpel and amputate it at the rump. Cropping requires stiff bandaging to be wrapped around the ears and ear tips to force the muscles to form a specific shape- standing up instead of flopping down. In the 1600’s the reasons for docking tails was in part due to a misconception that it prevented rabies, strengthened the back and increased speed. Dogs’ tails were also docked to limit injuries due to rat-baiting, and ring fighting. In the United Kingdom in the 1700’s working dogs with tails were taxed so many people docked them to avoid paying the tax. That law was overturned in 1796, but it didn’t stop the practice. local stories...local people...local pets

Now in 2008 the need for docking seems to be outdated. Tail docking is either done for medical, therapeutic, or cosmetic reasons. For working dogs their tails are docked to prevent pain and infection from burrs and foxtails, as well as reducing the instances of their tales being caught in livestock corrals. Many hunting dogs have their tails docked to reduce injury while fetching prey in the dense brush. Injuries to tails can be tricky to treat and as a result tails are often docked to remove the damaged portion. Unfortunately, the cosmetic aspect of docking has lingered and dominated the show ring and breed registries solely because we decided years ago to manipulate these animals- for what reason? Because we wanted to. Much like the designer dog syndrome, manipulating breeds is centuries old, and our society has been satisfied with accepting those standards. Dobermans with cropped ears and docked tails look more ferocious than their naturally cute droopy ears and long whip-like tails. Who wants a cute guard dog? On October 3rd of 2008, New Brunswick veterinarians decided that they will no longer perform cosmetic surgery on dogs, docking tails or cropping ears. They believe that it is no longer in a puppy’s best interest to have them adjusted for the sake of a certain look. Even dogs that have it done immediately after birth are not immune to pain and infection. It is a bold move, one that has been slow in arriving in Canada. The veterinarians are stating that docking is unnecessarily painful, and “breeds whose tails have been traditionally and routinely docked over centuries, such as Australian Shepherds, little attention is paid to selectively breeding for strong and healthy tails. As a result, tail defects that docking proponents claim makes docking necessary in the first place are perpetuated in the breeds.” They point out the many breeds of working dogs with long tails that are not traditionally docked, including English Pointers, Setters, Sheep dogs, and Foxhounds. Dwain McLean, Canadian Kennel Club director for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, voiced his objection to the decision, stating that there

Beagle Paws Rescue Hello everyone, my name is Kona. I’m a handsome, 5yr old, male beagle. I’m very smart and already know how to come, sit, stay and down. I’m also good with kids and other dogs. I like cats too but they tell me that I play too rough with them (apparently cats don’t rough-house like dogs -who knew!!!). I’d like a home with another dog to keep me company. Do you have a loving home for a nice little dog like me?

Sadie here. I’m 8yrs old. I’m a little plump, but I’ve been working out with my foster mom. She’s also put me on a diet (yuck!), but soon I’ll have that hour-glass figure that all of us girls crave. I have so many other really good qualities that I hope that someone will overlook my chubbiness (there’s more to love!). I’m good with dogs and kids, and have a wonderful calm nature. I’m also easy-going, sweet and smiley! Now who can ask for more than that?

I

f you hurt when you read this story then you are a person of integrity and full of compassion. If you are a person that has a hard time ingesting some of our stories and prefer not to read them, we understand, but let’s not forget this is reality; realities that the rescue groups and fosterers face on an all too frequent basis. At some time, accounts like this have to stop. The only way this will happen is for the people, responsible for such pain and abuse, to be held accountable.

The volunteers at SCARS and their vet did everything they could to make her comfortable. I received the following information about Alexa from SCARS: “It is with a very sad heart that we have to tell you that Alexa passed away late Saturday night, August 18th. She was terminally ill. SCARS and her foster home decided that we would treat Alexa with palliative care until it was her time. Sadly, that time came much sooner than we all had hoped. Late Saturday night Alexa started to bleed out internally, and there was not much that could be done. It was decided the kindest thing to do for Alexa was to euthanize her.”

Yet Another Case Of Abuse

Alexa was brought into Second Chance Animal Rescue Society from the Athabasca area. She was in terrible shape and began immediate veterinary treatment. Her head was so severely swollen that the vet thought she had been shot. After more careful examination Alexa in her fosterhome she had been beaten and her cute little face was full of puncture wounds. She was very thin and had a hard time walking for anymore than a few minutes without sitting to take a break. She was a very sweet dog and appreciated the care and attention. She was house trained, got along well with other dogs, enjoyed car rides and loved her foster mom Erica. At first it was thought, over and above her external injuries, she would need surgery to correct a hip problem, unfortunately for Alexa that was not the case. After many tests and an ultrasound, it was discovered she was suffering from blood clots in her heart and a tumor in her abdomen. 8

pet rescue magazine

November 2008

Throughout the whole ordeal, Alexa’s foster mom, Erica, was by her side. They had only been together for a week, but a strong bond had quickly formed between the two, and we are all so very grateful that for the last week of Alexa’s life, she was showered with loving care and attention. And while Alexa is gone, she will not be forgotten. The passing of Alexa saddens me, but I’m content in the knowledge that she was cared for and loved in her last days. My heart goes out to all the other Alexa’s that are facing life challenges of pain and abuse. My question is; how can we stop the kind of abuse Alexa faced prior to being rescued? Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS) Howdy! My name is Muggs and I am an Old English Sheepdog around 1yr old. I am getting a haircut right away so please check back on the PARS website for handsome new pictures of me with my new doo! I love people, and I like dogs although I tend not to like it when they get too sniffy with me. I am great with kids, but no one knows yet whether or not I like that whole cat thing. My name is Turk and I am 2yrs old. I weigh around 70lbs and they tell me I am a Lab/ Husky X. I came to PARS with manhood and attitude, but I’m afraid I’ll be losing some of that pretty quick! I have a ripped ear and show other signs of being in my fair share of scraps, but since I met some of the big boys at PARS like Goliath, Klondike, Clyde, Molson, Francine, and Yoda I have had some time to reflect. They were all kind enough to take time out of their busy schedules to explain to me exactly where I could take my attitude and bigdog talk. I am a quick learner and have graciously accepted their hospitality and agreed that perhaps we should live in more of a free choice pack than Turk’s world. I have not yet met the cats, but I am great with kids and becoming much better with other dogs.

AYE – CARUMBA!!! That’s what my foster mom said when the tailgate dropped and she first saw me. My name is Bruzer and I am about 120 lbs of solid jerk you off your feet! I like other dogs, and love you people folk, but I do need some work on my manners. I do show good respect and I’m working on being gentle with my weight and size, but they don’t call me THE BRUZER for nothing! The cats refuse to meet me unless there is a stun gun handy so no one is sure if the feline thing is my scene or not. I am likely a Rottie/Mastiff X and definitely one of the good guys! Well I keep getting bigger and bigger but I’m still hanging here with the rowdy’s at PARS. My name is Barci and I am a sweet pup with a submissive manner. I am good with everything, perfectly loveable and although a little muddy in my picture from a quad ride I am usually beautifully clean and shiny. UPDATE: We just got news I need hip surgery, that’s going to cost this group some money but they know I’m worth it! If you would like to donate to my cause, please do so!!! I will be patched up and ready for adoption as soon as possible!

Dreamgivers A Christmas Giving Story

W

hen Linda Demchuk and her pack (poodles named China, Digger and Shelby) started out last Christmas they did not realize their time and efforts would be so appreciated, let alone grow into an annual project. Many, many hours were put in by Linda and her devoted little trio to collect and assemble 30 wonderful care packages for rescued dogs and cats. The packages consisted of dishes, treats, bed/blanket and toys. All of them were beautifully wrapped in cellophane and decorated with loads of ribbon and bows. Linda agreed that most of the fun was in the wrapping. “Digger is my troublemaker and between the ribbons and paper the three of them were something else!” While half the pleasure was watching the dogs “help”, the real delight came from giving to those who needed it most. The rescue groups were delighted with the supplies and especially touched by the personal messages from Linda’s tiny musketeers on each package. Little notes with messages such as “Merry Christmas little one, don’t worry you are safe now. Love China, Digger and Shelby” and “Happy

Holidays you are in wonderful hands and will have a new family soon! Love China, Digger and Shelby” were on each package. The thoughtfulness and care put into each pack moved more than a few to tears. This year the Demchuk pack would like to aim for 50 Dreampacks, allowing them to include more rescue groups as recipients. “The Dreamgivers” are looking for new, basic care items such as: blankets, beds, dishes (plastic or metal), dog or cat treats (original and sealed packaging only please!), toys, grooming gear, etc. The Dreamgivers are also accepting Canadian Tire Money and gift certificates for pet retail stores to purchase supplies. Another way to help is to donate your time...help is needed for picking up supplies, sewing, stuffing beds, etc. If you can help with basic pet supplies or would like to donate some time, please email PRM at rescuemag@shaw.ca. Canadian Tire money for The Dreamgivers can be sent by mail to the PRM address provided on page 3. China, Digger and Shelby would like to thank you in advance for helping them with The Dreamgiver’s Christmas goals.

Grande Prairie SPCA Hello! My name is Boo ‘cause when I came to the Grande Prairie SPCA I was a bit of a fraidy cat. The girls here kept talking to me and giving me so many snuggles that I just couldn’t help but turn into the sweetest kitten ever! I am a little girl around 3 months old. I have been here for a month now, and it’s taken me just about that long to get the courage to greet all the nice people that come to my kennel. I do hope you come in to visit me soon! Hi, my name is Foxy. I am a youngster who recently had a litter of pups that are now ready for new homes. Now it is my turn! I was found with my new litter of 4 day old pups in a building that was going to be demolished. After my rescue, once I knew that my pups were safe, I slept for nearly 3 days. Now I am well rested and love to run. I only weigh about 35lbs, so I am very quick and agile. I love to be chased and when I run you can almost see me smile! When I’m not playing I love attention. I can’t wait to be close to my new family! For more info on me visit hart at www.humaneanimalrescueteam.ca or call (780) 455-4278.

Hinton & District SPCA My name is Zyra and I am a 10 month old Shepherd X. I am very shy but after a few treats I will be your best friend. I love to go for my daily romp in the park but I do have a tendency to follow my nose! Oh yeah, I like kids – I give them all big loving slurpy kisses. Hi, I’m Coda. I am a 4yr old Border Collie and I love everybody! …and I love car rides! …and I love treats! …and I love romps in the park! …and I love…well…I just really love everything! Taking pleasure in everything I do is in my spirit. Let’s go be happy together forever!

Good things come in small packages –and that describes me– Teka! I am a 2yr old, Miniature American Eskimo/Jack Russell X. I love to go for walks and I am awesome on leash. I am shy when I first meet you but toss me a few cookies and we will be buds! Small children scare me but I like adults, especially men! I’m called Bella and I am a Shepherd X. I like kids and love going for my daily walks. I am pretty good on leash too! I adore getting treats and love, love, love my humans!

Hey...helloooo...ya I’m talking to you! I am Dianne and I am about 5 months old. I came here with my brother Jack when I was 6 weeks old. When he was adopted I was so very lonely I cried for a few days. I got lots of snuggles from the staff which made me feel better. I guess adoptions have been really slow, I have been here for almost 100 days…for a kitten like me that seems like FOREVER! I am really cute, love snuggles and I want to love you! You should come see me, today is a good day, dontcha think? Let me fill you in on how I got my name. I came into the SPCA about a month ago after spending a few days in a very large tree over someone’s yard. Why, you ask, did I not just jump down and get out of that tree? Well, there was a very large dog in the yard underneath the branch I was stuck in, so I just decided to stick it out and wait for help. Luckily help did come (lucky for me as I was beginning to get a little thirsty and hungry). I am a 2yr old, handsome young man named Leaf. Thank goodness they didn’t name me Fall! They told me to count 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi...well you know. Now I have been counting since September 6. 2008 and I have totally lost my spot. I don’t want to have to start counting the days all over again of when I will get a new home. So I am just going to have to sit here and keep waiting patiently. I’m a 3yr old girl…. ok folks I’m done sitting around here waiting. I need YOU to come and adopt ME today! Okay…here we go again… 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3... The name is Squishy ‘cause I am a big ‘ol tomcat who is full of loving squish! I adore belly rubs and I love to tell stories of my life on the outside living off the streets. Now this 2yr old boy is enjoying the life of having staff, food, blankets, toys, what more could you ask for? Well I’ll tell ya...a forever home, that’s what. Now there’s something I could totally live with. I am Zeus. Strong and powerful...cuddly and soft. Well you know all us cats are! I am about 4yrs old and I love attention. I am looking for a home with caring people, regular meals, soft blankets and lots of fun toys! Being treated like a Greek God is not necessary, but I will need lots of love and attention.

Alberta Ferret Society (AFS) Remember us? We were featured in December’s Pet Rescue Magazine last year… and we’re still waiting!!! To recap: We are about 5yrs old. He’s Count Chockula, formerly known as Thing (1), and he is about as lovable as a ferret can get. He has lots of energy and enjoys playtime but is just as happy being packed around and cuddled. I’m Ellie, formerly known as Thing (2), and I have two loves in life. One is the ‘Count’ and the other is stashing pretty much anything I can get my paws on. I’m not much for snuggling with people, but who can blame me when I have the ‘Count’ to cuddle up to! I might be a bit nippy at times, but I’ll bring you lots of laughs! Help! My name is Divo and I was not well treated in my former home. As a result I’m quite afraid of humans. When approached, I might either run for my life or possibly bite. I’m really fortunate to be in an experienced foster home where I am learning that not all people are bad and that treats and cuddles are actually good things. However, I think your home might be even better, if you are “ferret experienced”. I’m a beautiful champagne boy and only five months old. Help me – I need your love! What’s up? Relax dude, it’s just me, Tiki! The friendliest, most laid back ferret lady you’ve probably ever met! I’m just a young girl but very social and my zone of comfort includes lots of people, dogs, cats, and always more ferrets!

My name is Osirus and this is Artem….and of course, we’re Egyptian gods and goddesses! What else would reincarnate as exalted ferrets? Once we were three, but Isis has journeyed across the Nile, and we’ll see him again on the next trip around. Artem is younger at 2yrs old but she obviously rules the palace. I’m 6yrs old, but I still travel the sands around the pyramids (and litter boxes) like a young pharaoh. I am being treated like royalty, with a monthly Lupron injection for my adrenal disease, but that simply means I get to hop on my camel (or car) and ride to that place of honor – the veterinarians office. Artem is a dark sable goddess, while I am the silver incarnation of the lord of the underworld. Bow at our feet, and we will bestow on you love and affection for all time. What’s that Sasha? Speak up…I’ve got ping pong balls in my ears! Oh, you want me to stop playing around and take the ping pong balls out of my ears? Why? …what a party pooper. I’m the fun one named Gus! We are a bonded pair full of energy. Sometimes we can be a bit nippy when there is a lot of excitement, but we’re used to a lot of attention and interaction with humans. We are also good with other ferrets and cats. I just want to keep playing and playing … so I’m going to take my ping pong balls and go run around some more … catch me if you can!

One bottle, two bottle, three bottles, GO! Whoopee! Such fun and all we need are some empty pop bottles. I’m Beau, and this is Lexi. We’re such a sweet pair, and not much bother just give us an empty bottle and we can play all day. Well, that is until you offer us a shoulder to ride on! We’re still quite young, so we have lots of time to play and play and play and play…well, you get the idea.

Real gentleferrets don’t kiss and tell…but let us tell you, we LOVE to kiss you pink skinned ferret-types. We’re around 4yrs old, great friends, and we’d love to become your number one (and two) fuzzies. My name is Bruce and I am the dapper albino (white fur, red eyes) while Bronco is a regular sable (dark fur, raccoon mask). If you’re looking for a great pair of gentle-ferrets, we’re your men!

This just in on the Ferret News Network: Late breaking story… “Tara is a Terror!” says foster mom. “She is totally wired and spends all her time running, climbing, jumping and flying through the air in her mission to get into and onto everything. Compared to Tara, Tess is an angel” sighs foster mom. “She is much more laid back and easier to keep track of. Both of these darling little ferrets love attention. They come up and pat me on the leg, and when I reach down, they wrap their paws around my arm and hoppity hop to be picked up. I will miss them but I’d be honored to send them to a new home that will allow them to make their own headlines forever more.” Remember, you heard it here first on the Ferret News Network! My tastes are simple –just give me a cardboard box to play in and some people to chase to keep me happy. My name is Sayko and I also get along well with dogs and other ferrets. I’m 3.5yrs old, but I’m still just a home girl. I don’t need much, but if you give me a “Forever Home” I’ll be your little dark eyed white fuzzy forever!

Ferrets have come and gone, but I’m still here! That’s me on the left, destined to be alone –until you come and take me with you. Will you? Please? I’m simple little Fozzie. I’m a 3.5yr old, silver ferret looking for new friends. I’m willing to try most anything … but please just give me a chance! Quiet please, spit spot, and order!!! I’m just a petite little ferret named Fergie, who doesn’t really want to be around other animals or ferrets. I can be a little timid and shy; if you surprise me I’ll run for cover and then peek out at you from my safe spot. I love to be held and carried around, and I am most at ease when things are quiet and peaceful. I’m a proper little 3yr old sable girl, and I just want a quiet home where I can have a regular routine. Sound good to you? Let’s go then…spit spot!

Pet First Aid Classes, Dog Training Classes, Small Animal Massage Therapy Hello Paris here. I am a smart, 2yr old, Lab/Collie X. I would love to try my paw at agility or maybe some obedience competition. I have been raised on a fenced acreage so I’m used to being outdoors but I have always had access to a special part of the house. I am house and crate trained, very well mannered and I will make a terrific family pet in an active home. My name is Abby and I am Paris’s sister. I am a little more reserved than Paris and eager to do everything right. I am good natured and don’t want to be a bother so once I know the rules you won’t find me bending them. You will just love my big brown eyes and droopy ears. My name is Latoyah and I am a 5yr old Japanese Chin. I am happy, playful and looking for a home where I will gets lots of love and attention. I am small enough to scoop up and carry around, I don’t even wiggle! If you are looking for a well rounded toy breed I may be your gal! Hi there my name is Cider and I am a 6yr old English Lab. I’m a large heavy set guy weighing in at 99 lbs. I am house trained, know my basic commands, love to retrieve and have good manners indoors. I don’t have a mean bone in my body and get along with everyone. If you love Labs you will certainly love me!

Chopper here. I am 2yrs old and they tell me I am a Shih Tzu/ Bichon Frise X. I am a happy go lucky guy and get along with everyone. I am also house and crate trained.

Hello, Castro here. I am 6yrs old but I still think I’m a pup. I’m very playful and enjoy romping with other dogs or playing fetch with anyone who will throw me a ball! I need the exercise because I’ve been piling on the pounds recently and I’m anxious to shed a few and get my youthful figure back! I’m just a happy go lucky guy looking for a kind home where I can hang out with my family. I am Molly and I am around 18 months old. I am used to attending doggy daycare and I’m well socialized with other dogs. I know “sit”, “down”, “stay”, “come” and “leave it”. I am also house and crate trained. I love to play ball and need a home where I will get lots of exercise and playtime. I also love to play with other dogs – chase is one of my all time favorite games. My name is Rando and I am a 3yr old American Eskimo. I am housetrained, well mannered, get along with everyone and as a big bonus I’m also very handsome and quite debonair! Please come meet me, perhaps I can make your home complete. I’m Digger, a 3.5yr old Himalayan X. I’ve been told I have an exceptional personality with plenty of character. I get along extremely well with friendly dogs and enjoy supervised time outside. I would love to accompany a new family on walks or help out with yard work. I also love to be handled as my previous family carried me around and played with me constantly. I would be an absolute gem within any loving family.

I am Lola and I am a Pug/Shih Tzu X. I am super friendly and super fast. I am always on the go, love the off leash park and make friends with everyone. I hope you will call about me because I really want to become a part of somebody’s family again. I have so much love to give. My name is Cinnamon. I was rescued with my sister Spice from a terrible situation and I’m looking forward to a new forever home! I’m a 6 month old, short haired, Torti that is good with everyone I meet. I absolutely love to play and will slow down to snuggle up beside you. I hope so much to be a part of a family really soon. I’m Spice and I was rescued with my sister Cinnamon from a very neglectful home. I’m a 6 month-old, short haired Torti and I’m very good with cats, dogs and children. I love to play and adore my daily cuddles. I’m waiting for my perfect family to come and take me home! Hello, I’m Georgia and my sister Phoebe and I came from Beaumont Animal Control. Our previous owner was evicted so here we are. Both of us are very personable, playful, 4 month old Torbies. We should get along fine with other cats as long as we’re given a proper introductory period. We have been fostered with dogs and would likely do well with a cat-friendly canine companion too. We’re extremely outgoing, well-socialized and will be an excellent fit for any loving family! Hi! My name is Helen and I’m 3yrs old. I am initially shy in new situations, but after a few days in a trusting home I turn into quite the cuddle bug! I love to play and would love to show you how I jump in the air to catch treats in my mouth. I get along well with other cats, though I can be a wee bit hissy at first. local stories...local people...local pets

Chinook Winds Greyhound Rescue Foundation Hi! Are you looking for a good excuse to get off the couch? Do you want a jogging partner, or a friend who’d love to try agility? If so, take a closer look at me, Maddie! I’m still a puppy as I’m not even 2yrs old, and I LOVE to play. I love having people around, but I know how to behave in a crate when I’m alone. I like chasing kitties if they run, but if a cat has attitude, I don’t mess with it. Really, I just want to have fun. I like playing with other dogs, but I prefer NOT to share my home with one. My foster mom says that I need strong leadership and boundaries because I “push my limits”. Ha! I must admit, though, that I do prefer knowing exactly what the rules are so I can try to be good. As long as I don’t get bored and I get enough activity, I really am a great dog! Hey, look at me! Would you believe I’m 9yrs old? My name is Bill, and I am one very handsome boy. I’ve only been out of a kennel environment for a few days, but I’m already starting to figure stuff out. I’m super smart! I like my crate (but I like it to be mine!). Smaller dogs are OK, but if you love your kitty, keep it away from me! I love chewing on bones, as you can tell from my beautiful teeth. Technically I’m a senior, but I sure don’t feel or look like it! Hi, I’m Rocket. I’m the same age as Bill, but I look even younger than he does. I really love a good romp outside, but I am quiet and well behaved in the house. I also love my crate. I really enjoy getting love and attention, but sometimes I still feel a little nervous and unsure of myself. With a little patience and understanding, I will be a really terrific companion.

Fort McMurray SPCA My name is Tiny, and I think I mostly look like a Lab/Shepherd X. I’m approximately 4yrs old, gentle, super sweet and I have a LOT of love to share. I recently had a litter of pups who have since moved on to homes of their own, and now it’s my turn!!! The girls here called me Gilligan, but I answer to Buddy. I’m a large Golden Retriever X with the most handsome amber eyes. We think I’m around 2yrs old. I am quite energetic and love to do lots of tricks; give me a job and I’ll be happy! I love playing fetch, almost as much as I love eating. I am good with kids and people of all kinds, but sometimes I’m a little unsure of other animals. People here call me Sugar, because I’m such a sweet little girl! I am very playful, get along with most other cats and I’m looking for a home where I can spend my nights cuddling with my people on the sofa.

My name is Lincoln, I’m a cute Shepherd X with a beautiful smooth coat. I was found wandering on highway 63, thankfully someone picked me up before I got hit. I love to play fetch and can’t get enough of my toys. I can sit, shake a paw and I would love to go to obedience classes to learn how to be a proper gentleman. I’m a fast learner, a great listener and all I need is some gentle guidance. I’m ready to find a family to love that will keep me safe and sound.

Hi, my name is Willa! I am the Queen of the Castle! I love to sit on people’s laps while they brush my long hair. I would love to go to a home where I can sit on a sofa and cuddle all day long!

My name is Oscar and I’m a Terrier X around 2yrs old or so. I am a little shy, but warm up quickly especially with a good game of fetch. I’m very confident in my own ideas and I’ve been a bachelor for awhile so I like things to go my way. Don’t worry we’ll figure things out together, I’m not opposed to a little compromise once you state your case! Hello! People like to call me Bonkers, but don’t worry I don’t really live up to my name. I do prefer to be the only cat in the room though, so all the attention will be on me. I would love to go to a quiet home where I can sleep all day. Hi, my name is Homer! I am the most handsome boy around! Don’t worry, I won’t let it go to my head! I love to cuddle and kiss everyone that comes to visit me. I prefer to go to a home were there is a family that I can play with.

My name is Princess, and I’m a 10 month old Husky X. I am a playful little girl and love to horse around with other dogs, especially my best bud Max. It would be nice to have someone to play with in my new home, I wouldn’t mind if there was a couple kids around too! My name is Dancer. I’m a gentle, very pretty Shepherd X. I recently had a litter of pups, and let me tell you they were a LOT of work! I’m ready to find a new home of my own now that I know all of my puppies are safe. I will be extremely loyal and faithful, and promise to always return all of the love that I am given and more. I can’t wait to have a warm and loving home to finally call my own. Hi, my name is Frosty. I got my name because I have frostbite on both my ears and my back leg…but that doesn’t stop me from playing with all the other cats! I would really like it if I could go to a home with a big family and other cats.

To Dock or not to Dock Cont. from page 7

were “standards set for certain breeds, and historic reasons for tail docking and ear cropping. This decision could mean local breeders will have trouble selling their dogs nationally and internationally.” The AKC levies huge fines against undocked animals in the confirmation ring, but in the states of New York and Vermont a movement is underway to making docking and cropping illegal. As previously mentioned, the history and reasons for docking and cropping doesn’t really hold up today and in Europe, over 14 countries have signed and ratified the Treaty for the Protection of Pet animals which considers cropping and docking to be cruel mutilation, and the list is growing. Show dogs are no longer docked in the United Kingdom and in 2006; the docking of any breed in Scotland became illegal. In 2001 the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s position on tail docking was as follows: · The WSAVA considers amputation of dogs’ tails to be an unnecessary surgical procedure and contrary to the welfare of the dog. · The WSAVA recommends that all canine organisations phase out any recommendations for tail amputation (docking) from their breed standards. local stories...local people...local pets

· The WSAVA recommends that the docking of dogs’ tails be made illegal except for professionally diagnosed therapeutic reasons, and only then by suitably qualified persons, such as registered veterinarians, under conditions of anaesthesia that minimise pain and stress. So clearly, there is a big difference between docking for animal welfare and docking for cosmetic reasons. The movement to stop the docking of tails is in full force and supporters of the practice are going to find themselves in increasingly smaller numbers. But until kennel clubs begin to make allowances for uncropped and undocked dogs, there won’t be any movement in the show ring and the controversy of docking will continue. Any kind of altering of an animal for cosmetic reasons needs to be examined carefully and as this is a Rescue magazine that supports many associations who don’t support cosmetic docking, I feel it is my obligation to voice support for the New Brunswick Vets who are against causing animals’ unnecessary pain. I’d like to move out of the 1600’s and respect all animals for their natural beauty.
