Tales of Trouble Only A Best Friend Can Get Away With
by Doug Brown and Kaori Brown How Bad is your Dog? Was the question posed to hundreds of dog owners through a website called www.baddogs.com or the Bad Dog Chronicles, and the answers were skillfully organized into a fun collection of stories about the trouble canines can truly get into. Each of the stories is told in first person (or dog) and their unique personalities shine through as they relate their adventures. The book contains photographs of the offenders and in some cases the end results of their misdeeds (Cooked Garbage is one of my favourites). Damage is listed anywhere from “Dignity Destroyed and Social Embarrassment” to a whopping $32,000 dollars in damage from leaving a bathroom door open. The book is divided into chapters with titles such as Plumbing, Doggy-Do, Flatulence, Off to the vet ( a personal favourite of mine), and Beyond Categorization. These tales will provoke laughter and amusement, and you’ll soon be adding up all the bad things your pet has done in comparison. This book makes an excellent gift for a new puppy owner, anyone thinking their fence is secure, and for those who think their dog is a bad one. Thanks to my sister who pasted a photo of my dog into the middle of the book as a gift…Damage: Still counting!
Can you believe that I was ever a stray, left alone in the world to fend for myself? My name is Molly and I am about 8 months old. I am house trained, travel well in the car, I know how to sit, and come when called. I have had a hard life though and have some very bad battle wounds to prove it. That is all behind me now. I have a great foster home and will be spending my time at Doggie Daycare with my foster mom and her two dogs. The only thing that could be better than life like this is a home that I can call my own.

Sadly someone hurt our littermates right outside her backyard, so the kind lady took us into her care. She kept two of my siblings. Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) I am a 50lb Collie X named Josie…and a very pretty one I might add. They think I am just under 1yr old but not sure. I love people and have been great with other dogs. I am one of those girls that just wants to be with you. I will even try helping you do chores by carrying the food bucket. My name is Scamp, and as you can see I am a Terrier X. I only weigh about 40lbs and I am very sweet. I have been great with other dogs but I’m not too sure on the cat thing. Although I’m still pretty new around here I’m doing very well. I’m a pretty easy going kinda guy looking for a home to call my own. If you are looking for an energetic, super cute canine to join your family -then look no further. My name is Scruffty (don’t forget the T in there!) and I am about 2yrs old. I am most likely an American Eskimo X…possibly with some Sheltie. I am around 30lbs and would do best in an active home that likes to go on long walks or runs. I am fine in the crate overnight and good with other dogs…but in my humble opinion…the only purpose for a cat is to chase it up a tree! My name is Zahara and my foster mom originally saw me at a Northern Alberta pound. I was pregnant, but sadly her truck was so full already that she had to leave me behind. Before she went she moved me from a dog trap into a clean dog run and sang to me to help me feel more comfortable. Another volunteer from SCARS came back last weekend though…I crawled on my belly to her and she loaded me into her truck (with a bunch more rescues of course!). I was so shy and unsure but took just 2 days and I started to come around. Everyone here knows I’m going to be an excellent mom and a short while after my pups are old enough to be adopted I too can go to a forever home. I’m Astro! Let me tell you a bit about myself. I have the cutest, scruffiest Terrier look ever. I am VERY SMART, have oodles and oodles of energy and I love to play. I am great with kids & other dogs, but do need an experienced dog owner who will keep my mind active. Nothing like a bored AND smart dog!
My name is Ingrid and this is Greta. We were in PRM last month but did not think our photos were too flattering and wanted to show you all how much better we are doing! We came into SCARS in terrible shape with horrific, open sores caused by Demodex. Our foster parents have been taking great care of us and we’re working hard on fattening up; we get dog food 3 times a day as well as ground beef from my foster Grandpa’s farm, salmon oil, dog cookies, apples from the nice neighbors, antibiotics in ricotta and peanut butter…we especially love peanut butter! The vet says it may take a couple months for our hair to grow back in but SCARS says we are already two of the most beautiful creatures ever!

Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) I’m known as Miss Personality! I am 4yrs old, full of vim and vigor and I can’t wait to have my own home to run and play in. I’m full of energy and I have lots of stories I would love to share with you (like where I misplaced the tips of my ears). I’m a big boned beautiful gal, sporting a gorgeous tuxedo coat. Not much is known about me as I recently came from the pound and I’m just not saying much. I do seem to be a dominant female though, so I would do best as the only cat in the house. I’m all dressed up with no place to go until my new family finds me…is it you? Shamus is my name and I’m 10yrs old. I’ve had a rough time since my owner died, and unlike Leona Helmsley’s dog, I was not left millions in a will. I spent some time on the street and was taken in by a kind lady when she saw me sitting in the middle of the road in the rain. Now I’m waiting to find my forever home, where I can learn to love again. I’m a really nice boy looking for a loving family…could I be your loving ball of fur? Pirate is my name and waiting for my new family is a pain! Come on already… where are you? I’m ok with dogs, cats and kids. Sweet, timid, affectionate all describe me…that and super duper handsome. Some say I’m grey but really I’m more like silver…or platinum! I too just arrived from the pound and I’m just the tiniest little guy ever. I love attention and toys, but I’m a bit bewildered by all the other cat roomies around here. Winter is coming and I need someone to curl up with by the fire. Could you love me forever? I just came from the pound. I was living as a ruffian on the street (even have some scratches to prove it!) and always looking for a meal to get by…but not anymore! I’m like a little vacuum cleaner with my voracious appetite. Everyone says I will one day have my very own people and they will not only give me regular meals but they will also love me forever and ever. To Dockor not to Dock The Controversy Continues By Rachel Sentes Contributing Writer
The process of docking and cropping involves the amputation of portions of an animal’s tail or manipulation of the natural curve of the ears. There are two ways to dock a tail. When a dog is little the tail has a rubber ligature wrapped around the base which constricts the blood supply to the tail for a few days, until it falls off. The second way is to sever the tail with a scalpel and amputate it at the rump. Cropping requires stiff bandaging to be wrapped around the ears and ear tips to force the muscles to form a specific shape- standing up instead of flopping down. In the 1600’s the reasons for docking tails was in part due to a misconception that it prevented rabies, strengthened the back and increased speed. Dogs’ tails were also docked to limit injuries due to rat-baiting, and ring fighting. In the United Kingdom in the 1700’s working dogs with tails were taxed so many people docked them to avoid paying the tax. That law was overturned in 1796, but it didn’t stop the practice. local stories...local people...local pets
Now in 2008 the need for docking seems to be outdated. Tail docking is either done for medical, therapeutic, or cosmetic reasons. For working dogs their tails are docked to prevent pain and infection from burrs and foxtails, as well as reducing the instances of their tales being caught in livestock corrals. Many hunting dogs have their tails docked to reduce injury while fetching prey in the dense brush. Injuries to tails can be tricky to treat and as a result tails are often docked to remove the damaged portion. Unfortunately, the cosmetic aspect of docking has lingered and dominated the show ring and breed registries solely because we decided years ago to manipulate these animals- for what reason? Because we wanted to. Much like the designer dog syndrome, manipulating breeds is centuries old, and our society has been satisfied with accepting those standards. Dobermans with cropped ears and docked tails look more ferocious than their naturally cute droopy ears and long whip-like tails. Who wants a cute guard dog? On October 3rd of 2008, New Brunswick veterinarians decided that they will no longer perform cosmetic surgery on dogs, docking tails or cropping ears. They believe that it is no longer in a puppy’s best interest to have them adjusted for the sake of a certain look. Even dogs that have it done immediately after birth are not immune to pain and infection. It is a bold move, one that has been slow in arriving in Canada. The veterinarians are stating that docking is unnecessarily painful, and “breeds whose tails have been traditionally and routinely docked over centuries, such as Australian Shepherds, little attention is paid to selectively breeding for strong and healthy tails. As a result, tail defects that docking proponents claim makes docking necessary in the first place are perpetuated in the breeds.” They point out the many breeds of working dogs with long tails that are not traditionally docked, including English Pointers, Setters, Sheep dogs, and Foxhounds. Dwain McLean, Canadian Kennel Club director for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, voiced his objection to the decision, stating that there

f you hurt when you read this story then you are a person of integrity and full of compassion. If you are a person that has a hard time ingesting some of our stories and prefer not to read them, we understand, but let’s not forget this is reality; realities that the rescue groups and fosterers face on an all too frequent basis. At some time, accounts like this have to stop. The only way this will happen is for the people, responsible for such pain and abuse, to be held accountable.
The volunteers at SCARS and their vet did everything they could to make her comfortable. I received the following information about Alexa from SCARS: “It is with a very sad heart that we have to tell you that Alexa passed away late Saturday night, August 18th. She was terminally ill. SCARS and her foster home decided that we would treat Alexa with palliative care until it was her time. Sadly, that time came much sooner than we all had hoped. Late Saturday night Alexa started to bleed out internally, and there was not much that could be done. It was decided the kindest thing to do for Alexa was to euthanize her.”
Yet Another Case Of Abuse
Alexa was brought into Second Chance Animal Rescue Society from the Athabasca area. She was in terrible shape and began immediate veterinary treatment. Her head was so severely swollen that the vet thought she had been shot. After more careful examination Alexa in her fosterhome she had been beaten and her cute little face was full of puncture wounds. She was very thin and had a hard time walking for anymore than a few minutes without sitting to take a break. She was a very sweet dog and appreciated the care and attention. She was house trained, got along well with other dogs, enjoyed car rides and loved her foster mom Erica. At first it was thought, over and above her external injuries, she would need surgery to correct a hip problem, unfortunately for Alexa that was not the case. After many tests and an ultrasound, it was discovered she was suffering from blood clots in her heart and a tumor in her abdomen. 8

Throughout the whole ordeal, Alexa’s foster mom, Erica, was by her side. They had only been together for a week, but a strong bond had quickly formed between the two, and we are all so very grateful that for the last week of Alexa’s life, she was showered with loving care and attention. And while Alexa is gone, she will not be forgotten. The passing of Alexa saddens me, but I’m content in the knowledge that she was cared for and loved in her last days. My heart goes out to all the other Alexa’s that are facing life challenges of pain and abuse. My question is; how can we stop the kind of abuse Alexa faced prior to being rescued? Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS) Howdy! My name is Muggs and I am an Old English Sheepdog around 1yr old. I am getting a haircut right away so please check back on the PARS website for handsome new pictures of me with my new doo! I love people, and I like dogs although I tend not to like it when they get too sniffy with me. I am great with kids, but no one knows yet whether or not I like that whole cat thing. My name is Turk and I am 2yrs old. I weigh around 70lbs and they tell me I am a Lab/ Husky X. I came to PARS with manhood and attitude, but I’m afraid I’ll be losing some of that pretty quick! I have a ripped ear and show other signs of being in my fair share of scraps, but since I met some of the big boys at PARS like Goliath, Klondike, Clyde, Molson, Francine, and Yoda I have had some time to reflect. They were all kind enough to take time out of their busy schedules to explain to me exactly where I could take my attitude and bigdog talk. I am a quick learner and have graciously accepted their hospitality and agreed that perhaps we should live in more of a free choice pack than Turk’s world. I have not yet met the cats, but I am great with kids and becoming much better with other dogs.
AYE – CARUMBA!!! That’s what my foster mom said when the tailgate dropped and she first saw me. My name is Bruzer and I am about 120 lbs of solid jerk you off your feet! I like other dogs, and love you people folk, but I do need some work on my manners. I do show good respect and I’m working on being gentle with my weight and size, but they don’t call me THE BRUZER for nothing! The cats refuse to meet me unless there is a stun gun handy so no one is sure if the feline thing is my scene or not. I am likely a Rottie/Mastiff X and definitely one of the good guys! Well I keep getting bigger and bigger but I’m still hanging here with the rowdy’s at PARS. My name is Barci and I am a sweet pup with a submissive manner. I am good with everything, perfectly loveable and although a little muddy in my picture from a quad ride I am usually beautifully clean and shiny. Dreamgivers A Christmas Giving Story
W
hen Linda Demchuk and her pack (poodles named China, Digger and Shelby) started out last Christmas they did not realize their time and efforts would be so appreciated, let alone grow into an annual project. Many, many hours were put in by Linda and her devoted little trio to collect and assemble 30 wonderful care packages for rescued dogs and cats. The packages consisted of dishes, treats, bed/blanket and toys. All of them were beautifully wrapped in cellophane and decorated with loads of ribbon and bows. Linda agreed that most of the fun was in the wrapping. “Digger is my troublemaker and between the ribbons and paper the three of them were something else!” While half the pleasure was watching the dogs “help”, the real delight came from giving to those who needed it most. The rescue groups were delighted with the supplies and especially touched by the personal messages from Linda’s tiny musketeers on each package. Little notes with messages such as “Merry Christmas little one, don’t worry you are safe now. Love China, Digger and Shelby” and “Happy
Holidays you are in wonderful hands and will have a new family soon! Love China, Digger and Shelby” were on each package. The thoughtfulness and care put into each pack moved more than a few to tears. This year the Demchuk pack would like to aim for 50 Dreampacks, allowing them to include more rescue groups as recipients. “The Dreamgivers” are looking for new, basic care items such as: blankets, beds, dishes (plastic or metal), dog or cat treats (original and sealed packaging only please!), toys, grooming gear, etc. The Dreamgivers are also accepting Canadian Tire Money and gift certificates for pet retail stores to purchase supplies. Another way to help is to donate your time...help is needed for picking up supplies, sewing, stuffing beds, etc. If you can help with basic pet supplies or would like to donate some time, please email PRM at rescuemag@shaw.ca. Hey...helloooo...ya I’m talking to you! I am Dianne and I am about 5 months old. I came here with my brother Jack when I was 6 weeks old. When he was adopted I was so very lonely I cried for a few days. I got lots of snuggles from the staff which made me feel better. I guess adoptions have been really slow, I have been here for almost 100 days…for a kitten like me that seems like FOREVER! I am really cute, love snuggles and I want to love you! You should come see me, today is a good day, dontcha think? Let me fill you in on how I got my name. I came into the SPCA about a month ago after spending a few days in a very large tree over someone’s yard. Why, you ask, did I not just jump down and get out of that tree? Well, there was a very large dog in the yard underneath the branch I was stuck in, so I just decided to stick it out and wait for help. Luckily help did come (lucky for me as I was beginning to get a little thirsty and hungry). I am a 2yr old, handsome young man named Leaf. Thank goodness they didn’t name me Fall! They told me to count 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi...well you know. Now I have been counting since September 6. 2008 and I have totally lost my spot. I don’t want to have to start counting the days all over again of when I will get a new home. So I am just going to have to sit here and keep waiting patiently. Alberta Ferret Society (AFS) Remember us? We were featured in December’s Pet Rescue Magazine last year… and we’re still waiting!!! To recap: We are about 5yrs old. He’s Count Chockula, formerly known as Thing (1), and he is about as lovable as a ferret can get. He has lots of energy and enjoys playtime but is just as happy being packed around and cuddled. I’m Ellie, formerly known as Thing (2), and I have two loves in life. One is the ‘Count’ and the other is stashing pretty much anything I can get my paws on. Fort McMurray SPCA My name is Tiny, and I think I mostly look like a Lab/Shepherd X. I’m approximately 4yrs old, gentle, super sweet and I have a LOT of love to share. were “standards set for certain breeds, and historic reasons for tail docking and ear cropping. This decision could mean local breeders will have trouble selling their dogs nationally and internationally.” The AKC levies huge fines against undocked animals in the confirmation ring, but in the states of New York and Vermont a movement is underway to making docking and cropping illegal. As previously mentioned, the history and reasons for docking and cropping doesn’t really hold up today and in Europe, over 14 countries have signed and ratified the Treaty for the Protection of Pet animals which considers cropping and docking to be cruel mutilation, and the list is growing. Show dogs are no longer docked in the United Kingdom and in 2006; the docking of any breed in Scotland became illegal. In 2001 the World Small Animal Veterinary Association’s position on tail docking was as follows: · The WSAVA considers amputation of dogs’ tails to be an unnecessary surgical procedure and contrary to the welfare of the dog. · The WSAVA recommends that all canine organisations phase out any recommendations for tail amputation (docking) from their breed standards. local stories...local people...local pets
· The WSAVA recommends that the docking of dogs’ tails be made illegal except for professionally diagnosed therapeutic reasons, and only then by suitably qualified persons, such as registered veterinarians, under conditions of anaesthesia that minimise pain and stress. So clearly, there is a big difference between docking for animal welfare and docking for cosmetic reasons. The movement to stop the docking of tails is in full force and supporters of the practice are going to find themselves in increasingly smaller numbers. But until kennel clubs begin to make allowances for uncropped and undocked dogs, there won’t be any movement in the show ring and the controversy of docking will continue. Any kind of altering of an animal for cosmetic reasons needs to be examined carefully and as this is a Rescue magazine that supports many associations who don’t support cosmetic docking, I feel it is my obligation to voice support for the New Brunswick Vets who are against causing animals’ unnecessary pain. I’d like to move out of the 1600’s and respect all animals for their natural beauty.
