Lap It Up! Halloween already and the holiday season just around the corner..time just keeps flying! In keeping with the spirit of Halloween, our friend Lilly here decided to get dressed up for this month’s picture in Lap It Up. She doesn’t mind, however, there are many pets out there that don’t quite appreciate donning the latest couture to hit the racks. Anyhow, we do hope you all enjoy your Halloween fun this year but we have a few important tips on page 11 to keep all of your Darth Vaders, Princess Leia’s, Jail Breakers and Hot Dogs a little safer this Halloween. Between Oct 4th being both World’s Pet Day as well as St. Francis of Assisi’s Feast Day & Blessing of the Animals there is surely a good reason to celebrate with your pet! Give them the best present ever, some one on one time! And...don’t forget International Volunteer Day is coming soon. We want to hear about some of the amazing individuals out there volunteering their time and efforts in any capacity for animal rescue (see page 15 for more details). Until next month....Happy Thanksgiving! The Pet Rescue Team The Pet Rescue Team We really appreciate your comments and feedback. Please feel free to email us directly at rescuemag@shaw.ca

Rachel Sentes Book Review

The Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook by Liz Palika Aah, fall…the season for baking. There’s nothing like the smell of yummy cookies wafting from the oven to encourage your pet’s saliva to drip onto the linoleum in anticipation. The Ultimate Dog Treat Cookbook by Liz Palika is a book full of scrumptious homemade treats designed to please your canine’s favourite cravings. Each of the recipes in the book has been taste tested by the author’s dogs (and mine) and come through with flying colours. From Tummy-Tempting Chicken Soup Cookies to Kashi Cookies, each recipe is accompanied by nutritional notes on the featured ingredient. The special occasion section has Halloween Hidden Treats and Turkey Day treats with ingredients that can be found at most grocery stores. I loved the section for dogs that may have special dietary needs, or are vegetarians, giving several options for wheat free treats. The only recipe, which might be difficult to bake, is the Green Grain-Free Goodies made from Force dog food. It may be available in specialty stores, but not in regular retail outlets in Edmonton. Here are a few tips when using the book. Tip number one: If you’ve never made dog treats before, then I must inform you that there is no room for improvisation with the recipes. You must follow the recipe exactly or your cookies may not come out the way you envisioned them. Of course, your dogs will probably still love them, but trust me- you will feel extremely dissatisfied with the outcome. Tip number two: If you want to make treats that have a long shelf life, look for the recipes that say, “for crispier treats leave in oven overnight to harden” you can bake these far in advance of any special occasion. Finally tip number three: In older printings of this book, there is a Canine Chef accessory offer. The offer has actually expired; however, I still managed to get them, but not without some difficulty. Make the reason for picking up this book the recipes- not the free offer. It’s worth it. (Also available- the Ultimate Cat Treat Cookbook: Homemade Goodies for Finicky Felines) Thanks to Lucy, Daisy, and Pumpkin for being my ever present kitchen assistants and taste testers! 4

Howdy! I am a Ball Python but we are not sure just how old I am (and you can’t really expect me to volunteer it can you?). I came from local Animal Control and eat thawed frozen food really well. I seem fine to handle so far and except for some light scarring on my back I am in good shape physically. My name is Dante and I am a baby Iguana. I was surrendered by my owner because they feared I might be aggressive…but I am sure I’ll be fine. I am just afraid and need someone to work with and handle me. I have a healthy appetite and listen intently when people speak to me…what a cutie I am!

Hello my name is Griffin and I am a 7yr old, female, Leopard Gecko. I need a home without cats. My old cat attacked me once and I was hurt quite badly, so I am still afraid of them and understandably would rather not have them around at all. I am in great shape and just want to find a loving home. I am a Boa Constrictor and I was surrendered by my owner because I went on a hunger strike for 6 months. I am healthy but underweight. I am now eating previously frozen, thawed food so I’m ready to go to a new home.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) Hello, my name is Emma, and those 4 beautiful babies are mine. They are 5 weeks old now, so soon they will not need me anymore, and we will all need to find homes of our own. I am a sweet little Beagle X weighing in at about 35lbs. I love pretty much everyone, kids, adults, other dogs, (not sure on cats but my foster mom thinks I’d be fine) and I am looking for a family to love me back forever. Could that be you? My name is Esi. I am the smallest girl in the litter, but I can bite my brothers’ tails and pounce on them just as good as any other pup. I am 5 weeks old now and a total cutie patootie! I am Kaya, which means oldest sister. I was the first one born ladies first, you know! I love to play and be held close. My mom (Emma) is a small Beagle X, and we think us girls might have some Shepherd in us, but no one really knows for sure! My name is Kofi (rhymes with Sofi), and I am Emma’s other little boy. I am more laidback than my brother, Manu. I don’t cry as much as he does but I do like to play! I’m really good at biting my sisters’ ears and tackling them, but it’s not so great when the two of them gang up on me! I am super fluffy, fat, and cute too! Manu here. I guess you could say I am the baby of the family, even though I’m the biggest! I am a big cry-baby when it comes to attention. I’m always at the gate to our room crying for someone to pick me up & play with me. I am very handsome and cute, so it usually works! My brother & I have gotten pretty big in the last 5 weeks and SCARS is estimating we could easily end up weighing 50-60lbs when we are all grown up. Wouldn’t you love a Manu in your house?

How could someone neglect us like this? Hi! My name is Ingrid and my sister here is Greta. We just arrived from the Wabasca pound and we are around 4 months old. My new fostermom was speechless when she saw us. There are a lot of disturbing cases of neglect that come through SCARS, but let’s just say some not so nice things came out of her mouth about the person who let this happen. Hmmmmm....where to begin; we have Demodex, which is a skin condition that left untreated (like ours) results in our little bodies losing hair and being covered in sores and scabs. Even to scratch ourselves causes us to bleed and let me tell you we are iiiiittttcccchhhhy!!! Our little bodies are so infected our feet are swollen and the smell of the infection is horrific. To make matters worse we are very emaciated from starvation as well. Oh and my sister Greta had a choke chain collar on so tight they actually had to cut it off at the vet’s office...good thing she never got caught up on anything — those choke chains can be very dangerous even when fit properly! My foster mom says she does not care about the smell, scabs or blood, she is just amazed that we are still the sweetest girls in the world. We are now under medical care and through it all we have been eating well and just plain old happy to have kind and caring hands to love us. We will not be up for adoption for some time as it will take a little while to recover and catch up, but please feel free to check back on the SCARS website to see how our progress is going. Hi there my name is T, but you can call me Mr! I am a loving, sweet dog that has a special attachment to anything that is stuffed. I LOVE my stuffies!!! Oh and if you have a ball, I will play fetch with you for hours. I am what some might call a “fast forward” kind of dog. I am always on the go, but I always have time to stop for my people before I am off again. I am looking for a running companion in the day, and a snuggler at night. I am working on my housetraining and I am excellent in my crate. I don’t seem to mind other dogs...unless they try to take my stuffies! Then we have a sibling “discussion”, but I’m not the type that always needs to win. I would love to find a home that has lots of time to teach me, and the patience and understanding to encourage me to be the best darn dog I can be. I will probably end up weighing in around 70lbs.

How do you like the profile shot? I’m not cute and tiny like the other guys who might fit in this box... but Elvis is alive! I know cause that’s what everyone calls me. I am a hunka hunka burn’n LOVE, at the young age of 7yrs. I am good with kids, cats, and dogs. I have an independent spirit, but I listen very well. Please phone PARS if I’m your guy. Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) I’m a 1 yr old boy who came to SNAP with my mom and sister when I was a tiny kitten. Though we’re fine with other cats, we’re all very timid and fearful of people due to our rough start in life. I still like to be close to my family as I was taught there’s safety in numbers. A quiet home with a patient person, willing to spend time helping me with my social skills, would be great. One that would adopt me and my sister would be even better! Yes I know I’m beautiful! I’m a 2 yr old, gorgeous kitty from the pound. Not much is known about me yet, but when I settle in I’ll let you know more. I’d love it if you could meet me! Tigar is my name! I am a 1yr old Papillon. They say I’m very smart and could easily become a champion obedience titled dog if you have the time and desire to work with me. I don’t want to be carried around or sit on a couch all day, I want to work! I can be a little too assertive with other canines and can’t go to a home with large dogs. I’m a small boy around 7lbs and I’m not accustomed to children, so I will need an adult only home. If you are looking for a dog that needs a job, and you have the time to spend with me, call SNAP today.

I’m a good looking guy with the most amazing coloring. Not much is known about me, but they’re guessing I’m about 1yr old. I’m very timid and shy in nature, but I know I will let my personality shine when I settle into my new home. I’m hoping someone will decide that I’ll make a nice addition to their family very soon. Everyone at SNAP calls me Murphy. I am about 1.5yrs old and judging from my slight physique I have spent some time on the street. Terribly underweight, I am quite happy to have three square meals a day and I’m starting to put on some weight. I get along with all the other cats and though I’m a tiny boy I don’t let anything or anyone intimidate me. I would love to go to a home with lots of food!

I’m a big female around 1yr old. Originally a pound rescue, I have been with SNAP for most of my life. Though I’m a bit timid and quiet in nature, I’m also very affectionate once I warm up to you. I get along well with cats and adults, but would do best in a home without small children or dogs. If you pick me, prepare to have a very warm lap this winter as I love to be cuddled! I was named Lucy. I’m a 2 yr old sweetheart that was found abandoned on an acreage. I’m an eye-catching girl who is laid back, affectionate, and talkative when I need to let you know a pat is required! I would prefer to go to a home without other cats or dogs. If you think I’m the one for you please call about me soon! www.spayneuteractionprogram.ca

My name is Oreo. I am 4yrs old, sweet, affectionate in nature and I love to play. I was rescued from the pound…it’s hard to believe I was unwanted as I’m the sweetest thing ever. I crave human attention and get along fine with other cats. Please come and meet me today.

Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart) Hi! Our names are Bambi, Echo, Griz, Kris and Mitch. We were born around August 1, 2008 and the details are a little sketchy. My Mom was found taking care of us in an abandoned school that was slated for demolition. Thankfully the nice guys that were working there found us, and by the time we opened our eyes we were all in a great foster home. We have really had a good time together, but our Mom thinks that we are ready to find our own homes. She says we will love having safe and loving homes…it sounds like so much fun we can hardly wait!

Paws And Claws Animal Rescue Foundation I am Chico, one of the “Blues Brothers” litter. I am a Lab/Sharpei X, around 4 months old. I have a lovely personality, get along great with other dogs, adore people, and even horses. Got to be honest though –cats find me a bit rough! My foster mom says I’m an intelligent and active puppy and the vet thinks I will end up weighing in around 60lbs. I just really want to come home and snuggle with you! My brother Dizzy is still looking for a new home too. I’m called Rooey because I hop like a kangaroo! I am 3 months old and came with a broken leg. It had been broken for a while, so there wasn’t anything the vet could do to fix it. So...I’ll be a three-legged kitty, but that’s no problem because I’ve already learned how to get around great on three legs! I’m a cheerful, happy-go-lucky girl. My name is Lois! I am six months old and no one is sure what kind of mix I am; poppa was a rolling stone, and I’m afraid momma was too. I was pretty hungry when I was rescued and I’m just loving this new lifestyle; full bowls of food are great! I adore people, kids included, and like other dogs once I get to know them. I’m a bit of jerk at first, but I’m learning! The people who walk me are “training me”, whatever that means. I just know I get treats! I’m Dudley. I’m a pretty nice, laidback, kinda guy. I like to play with other dogs and I love people. Tummy rubs are one of my very favourite things! I’m about six months old now and just waiting for my new family to find me so I can start my new life!

My name is Laverne. I was very scared when I came in with my sister Shirley...but I was also very hungry!!! I really started to come out of my shell when I found out about tummy rubs and now I run around happily. I’m also a lot more confident around people. I really like other dogs, and I will likely do well with cats. I’m Shirley. I was very nervous when I came; it took one of the Paws and Claws volunteers an hour and a half just to get me in a crate. She called me “Starvin’ Marvin”. I am so much more comfortable around people now. I am 3 months old, enjoy other dogs company, and I will likely do well with cats too. My name is Smarties, I am about 9 weeks old in this picture. I have one blue eye and one brown eye so I’m clearly extra special. I also love people, dogs, cats....and especially love neck snuggles!

My name is August, but my foster mom calls me “Sweet Girl”. I was a stray with seven babies on one of the First Nation Communities near Rocky Mountain House. During our rescue a little boy crawled under the shed and safely brought each pup out one at a time, but I was still quite worried about the whole thing and whined a lot in my concern. I was sure happy once they put me in the crate with my little ones! My babies are named after the days of the week and Sunday is my only girl! They are ready to go to new homes soon and once I am spayed I will need a good home too.

O

K...it’s true! Beagles are like potato chips; one is never enough! We are sure the folks at the Beagle Paws annual reunion on September 21st would all agree.

Edmonton Beagle Paws Reunion Hello, my name is Jake and I’m pleased to meet you. I’m quite young, have lots of energy and I like to play. I’m a little bit shy but once I get to know you I like to snuggle up. I like living here with my foster mom because she gives me the love and attention that I need, but what I’d really like is to find my forever home. One with another dog to play with would be perfect. Do you have a loving home for a nice little dog like me?

Hi there. My name is Ranger. Some call me Ranger Danger, but I’m not dangerous unless you’re a rawhide. Through no fault of my own, I need to find a new human family to take care of me. I’m only 4yrs old, already housetrained, neutered, good with other dogs and cats and I love young people...but I might not be best for little people that wander around with cookies near my nose! I do love my food! I have very soft fur and love to fetch and catch. Can I come live with you?

There was a fantastic turnout of both Beagles and their adoring people. Activities included contests like who has the longest tail and games such as musical mats and hot dog bobbing. Special guests from Beagle Paws in Eastern Canada visited and Tammy Francis from the City of Edmonton Animal Control talked with the group and answered questions on local bylaws. With a silent auction, a kissing booth, snacks and good company the afternoon was a hit for all. The Pet Rescue Team would like to thank May Sutherland of Beagle Paws for the invitation to join them at Jackie Parker Park and encourage Beagle lovers everywhere to adopt a rescue!

Greetings Beagle lovers! If you are looking for a loving snuggle bunny then look no further because I’m it. My name is Rusty and I’m a 3yr old boy looking for a forever home. I’m a little bit shy at first so I would like a family that would be patient and understanding. I am working on building my self-confidence but I still need a little help. I’m great with other dogs and a very loving little boy who would like nothing better than a warm lap to sit on or cuddle up to on the sofa. Can I be your forever dog?

Parkland Animal K-9 Society (PAKS) Can you say beautiful? That’s me! My name is Dhylan and I am a 2yr old German Shep X with lots of love to give. I am a bit shy and will need patience and guidance to help me get settled in my new home. My best bud is Tilly, in fact I was her ‘seeing eye dog’ when she first came to live in my home. Hi there. I am 2yr old Bearded Collie named Sprocket, you know...like the dog from Fraggle Rock. I may not look like it now but when my hair is grown back...trust me…I could be his twin! Why am I shaved you ask? Well, when I came in from the pound I was so dirty and so matted that no amount of brushing would have worked to get me comfortable. It was so bad that my tail was matted to the back of my legs!!!! It must have been like that for awhile because I don’t use my tail at all it just kind of hangs there. Don’t worry I’m a happy boy and I’ll learn to wag again!

Hello there, my name is Tilly. I am about 2yrs old and as you can tell I am a Lab X. As with most Labs I am full of energy, young at heart and love to run and play. I’m good on leash but need a firm handler because my attention span can be short. I am 100% healthy but extra special because I was born with an abnormality (why be normal everyone else is!!). I am totally blind in my left eye and as a result my perception can be a little off so I sometimes run into things. BUT...let me tell you -it does not slow me down one bit!

Good day, my name is Jazmine or Jazzy for short. I am a 6-7 month old German Shepherd/Bouvier X. I have totally stolen my foster mom’s heart. As with most puppies I have lots to learn but being such a great girl, I pick up on things quickly. I do know how to sit...it’s that stay part that I have trouble with. I would love to have another dog in my family as I love to play and get lonely by myself. My spot is sponsored this message:

heroes among usHelping Hands Honoured in our Community

As an owner of several rescue dogs, I was thrilled when I discovered the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta. A couple of my dogs had thoroughly enjoyed dogsports, but as my interests changed, so did my desire to find another venue to work with my dog. I wanted to find something else that I could do around my own schedule, and still have the same bond with my dog that I had fostered at agility and flyball.

Animal-assisted therapy or Pet Therapy offers a unique opportunity to teach pets new skills, and improve the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive functions of the elderly, children, the disabled, and anyone who needs a little comforting. Many kinds of animals are used in therapy but rescued dogs are especially high on the list as excellent candidates for this community based work. They seem to have a unique intuitiveness to seek out people that need a little extra love or attention. Perhaps it’s being given a second chance for a good home that makes these pets want to give back to people in need. Pet therapy not only has emotional benefits, but also medical ones. Visits by pet therapy animals has been shown to lower blood pressure, risk for stroke and heart attack, and decreases depression. Anyone who is greeted by a pet after a long day at work certainly knows the benefits of having these warm-blooded creatures around. Pet therapy facilities include senior citizen homes, mental health associations, youth correctional services, libraries and schools. Local celebrity Malcolm Azania, (aka. Minister Faust, author of From the Notebooks of Dr. Brain) loves the benefits that animals can offer in a school setting. As a former teacher, he understands how visiting with pets can affect children. “Kids who have disabilities, who may grow up in impoverished neighbourhoods, or kids who have been through psychological difficulty can again have empathy by learning to take care of animals, so what the adult world denied them, the world of animals can return to them,” says Azania. The Annual Heroes Dinner and Fundraiser being held by the Pet Therapy Society of Northern Alberta on October 18th 2008, is an opportunity to acknowledge those who have contributed to the human-animal bond through acts of heroism in the community. These “Heroes Among Us” are deserving of more than just a thank you, and Malcolm was local stories...local people...local pets

happy to volunteer his time as M.C to the non-profit organization. “I agreed to do this right away because I do love animals and it’s a nice opportunity to be able to give them the support they need.” The winners this year include two kind Samaritans who rescued a pair of kittens trapped under a car, (they had to take it apart!), a kind woman who opened her heart to starving horses, and two women who tirelessly reach out to connect and educate the public about rescue associations across Alberta. Grande Prairie SPCA Hi my name is Cleo, which is short for Cleopatra because I have beautiful blue Egyptian eyes. I am a fun loving, Siamese looking, kitten around 5 months old. I’m sure Momma taught me not to growl at my siblings, but when I have my crinkle ball I just don’t want to share! I am a cuddle puss and have a lovely purr too!

Hello everyone...Johnny here, I’m in the ad above! I came to the McDonalds with such a filthy and matted coat that I had to have every inch of me shaved. I am about 1.5yrs old and probably a Lhasa Apso/ShihTzu X. I am curious about everything and love all the dogs I am now living with. I chase the cats but just in play...now those birds... well I sure would like to get a hold of them. I know that the bathroom is outside and I love to sleep in my crate. I love people and don’t have an aggressive bone in my funny little bow-legged body!

The McDonald Family Animal Rescue I am one of a litter of six beautiful kittens that were born about 8 weeks ago in a back lane to our pretty little mom Elena. Some of us are short haired and some are long haired –but we are all beautiful, healthy and happy. We will be ready for our forever homes any day now.

I’m Tiger... and I’m so happy to be back indoors where I belong! It was hard just living outside –let alone giving birth and caring for my large family. I have been spayed, microchipped and vaccinated. I love to purr, rub up against your legs and get attention. I am very happy at my foster home but I too need a forever home.

Hello! There are six of us left but only four of us squeezed into the picture. We are about 15 weeks old. We were born on the street and a couple of us are still a little scared, so we would love to go to families willing to give some extra TLC. We could sure use some loving! Our mom is Tiger and she is looking for a good home too.

Hi there, they call me Elena. I love my long coat and I have the most striking stripes. I don’t know what I did to deserve being left outside to have my babies and fend for myself, but I’m thrilled to finally be able to relax and enjoy the company of humans again, Please give me a home that will last forever.

I am a handsome young boy of about 5 months old named Colby. I love romping around and my favorite toy is a crinkle ball. My foster mom says I am very playful, and I am a bit of a prankster too, but all in all a good boy. Cuddles are a definite go and will be required in my new home! I am a sweet little girl named Sugar Baby and I am about 5 months old. I am living in foster care right now, but I am totally looking for wonderful home. My foster mom says I am the cuddliest kitten of the whole family. I am very content sitting quietly in your arms but I also love playtime with the crinkle ball or jumping to catch toys in the air. Give the GPSPCA a call today! Hi my name is Sweets, wanna know why? It’s because I am the sweetest 4 month old little girl you’ll ever meet! It wasn’t always that way though. When I came in I was really, really scared and I didn’t want anyone to touch me. With a little perseverance, I totally came around and now cuddles are the best thing ever! I really think you should come to or call the Grande Prairie SPCA and ask about me! I got my name Whiskas because I really look like the handsome cat on the Whiskas cat food commercial. I am around 5 months old and I dream to be just as famous when I grow up! I am very playful and love my string mouse...I can even jump really high to reach it. Once playtime is over, I relax and snuggle up for some serious cuddle time.

Hi there! My name is Cash and as you can see I am as at home cozying up with you as I am outside in the yard. With my Husky & German Shepard background I will make a wonderful family dog; I am crate trained and great on my leash. I like people and seem to like most dogs. I am just old enough to be over those annoying puppy habits but young enough to give you many many years of love and companionship.

Alberta Ferret Society (AFS) Name: Annie Rank: Ferret First Class! Age: Seven! Color:Marked White! I’ve tried to be tough, but it has been rough! My “dad” is with the military and was called away to serve our country. He was sad to give me up, but I’m so proud of him! I’m so well behaved I’ve never been caged, so I hope to be allowed to roam free in my new home too. Also, I’m being treated with monthly Lupron injections for adrenal disease -whoever adopts me must be willing to continue with my medical care. Other than that, I’m all yours to love! My name is Daphne and my story is a sad one! At some point in my past my back was broken. No one really quite knows how or when this occurred, but nothing can be done now to correct it. Fortunately I’m not in any pain, however, because of my injury I have limited use of my back legs. Despite this, I get around amazingly well and I enjoy playing, climbing and getting into trouble just as much as the next ferret. I’m truly a special little girl – and I’m not even a year old!

What’s a girl to do? My name is Cookie and my previous family surrendered me -which was for the best. Somehow they’d allowed my lovely sable coat to become dull and brittle! Now I’m back to my radiant ferret glory and even showing my true playful side. I’ve become really good friends with Cleopatra (featured in the September issue of PRM) and I’d REALLY like to find a new home with her.

Whoopee – I’m very young (under half a year) and full of energy -even for a ferret! I’ve got a mind to steal and stash just about anything I can get my paws on and I’m very good about figuring out ways to get to exactly what I want! BeBe’s the name, and water is also part of my game …unlike many other ferrets! I’m a water baby and I’m quite happy splashing around and amusing myself in a pan full of the wet stuff. What a bother! My name is Emily and I am a 3yr old sable. First, I was abandoned in an apartment (no wonder I was thin and depressed) and now there’s this large tumor on my front foot infiltrating the bone. The good people here say once my weight is up I’ll undergo surgery to remove the leg. I’ll need time to recover and gain strength of course, but they are confident that I will be zooming around and getting into just as much trouble as any four legged ferret very soon. We’re so very well behaved and gentle, who wouldn’t want a delightful pair of ferrets like us? Our names are Odin and Sasha and we are both about 1.5yrs old. Sasha has a “Siamese Sable” coat and loads of personality. I am a slightly younger “Sable Mitt” boy and tend to be a bit more reserved -but no less energetic!

I just don’t know what happened? My people were there one day living in the apartment, and then gone the next. My name is Buster…and I was just abandoned and left to fend for myself. Needless to say I’m somewhat nervous, but those nice foster folks are giving me enough TLC that hopefully I’ll be ready to adopt very soon. I’ve had so many changes in my short 2yrs of life, but, I’ll stay strong and macho until just the right new “forever folks” come to take me home. “I ain’t nuthing but a sweetheart, that strayed into the Pound. I ain’t nuthing but happy, being a busy body boy. I ain’t nuthing but a treat hound, loving people, ferrets and playtime, not necessarily in that order. Uh huh huh, I ain’t nuthing but a sweetheart, to come into your heart.” My apologies to Elvis, but when my foster people sing this to the tune of “I ain’t nuthing but a hound dog” I just get sooo happy! My name is Nemo and I am looking for a loving home. My name is Roscoe! Rico and I are opposites. He is mild mannered, while I’m a going concern! I love my beany

babies and spend a good deal of time moving them about and placing them just so. Rico is more of an explorer…he’s a “marked white”, 3.5yr old boy. I am just over 2yrs and a “wannabe mitt” sable boy. We’re both used to cats and good with kids. We’d be great for a first time ferret owner – you’ll get some of everything ferrety between the two of us!

Here’s a few tips for a safe and fun evening from the Pet Rescue Ghoules Tip 1 Remember that chocolate is toxic to cats and dogs so if they are begging for some of the treat action be sure to keep it to treats that are made for pets! Tip 2 Shwack, Shwack, Shwack –watch out for those happy dog tails! Halloween tends to encourage more candlelight and if kept on coffee tables some of your larger dogs may get their tail in the flame. Another idea is to use flashlights inside of Jack-O-Lanterns instead of candles. Tip 3 Walk your dog before trick-or-treaters start their visits. Keep a firm grip on the leash; many dogs are frightened by people in costumes. Tip 4 Place a dog gate in front of your front door to block access in case someone accidentally lets your pet out of the place where he’s confined. Many dogs will run after trick-or-treaters. Tip 5 Unfortunately, Halloween has become a very dangerous time for cats, please for their saftey, keep them indoors at all times that day.

Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection (NASAP) Hullo, my name is Cable and if I look a little anxious it’s because I’m kinda overwhelmed with everything going on the past couple of weeks. My owners surrendered me because they were moving. Unfortunately they had never taken me anywhere or socialized me; so I’m not very confident and I will need an understanding, quiet, home. I’m only about 9 months old and although timid/cautious, I’m very gentle and friendly. I get along great with other dogs and ignore the resident cat in my foster home. I’m probably a Collie/Terrier X -with perhaps a touch of greyhound or whippet! Hi my name is Dakota and I ended up in foster care because my owner is very sick. I am a good, well trained, very friendly, 6yr old and I’m looking for a new home where I can hang out with my family and be everyone’s friend. My coat is long and needs frequent brushing but it’s beautiful and will keep me really warm on our winter walks! My name is Cola...and I am going to try really hard to sit still long enough to tell you a bit about myself! I am an 8 month old, Border Collie X with oodles and oodles of get up and go! I have a good temperament, I’m used to young children, good with other dogs and fine with cats too. Sometimes big men scare me a little but I warm up quickly once I know they are harmless! I am very smart, but until I came to NASAP I spent most of my puppyhood tied up so I’m still a little skittish around new people. I will need further training and lots of daily exercise but if you are looking for a mid size active dog with the potential to learn just about anything -then look no further here I am! 12

My name is Jonah and I am quite shy, so I would like a quiet home with children 10yrs+. I am pretty good on leash, know how to sit, I’m already housetrained and I have good recall. I need a family who is kind but consistent so I always know what is expected. My foster mom says I am the easiest dog to have around! I need a permanent family who I can feel comfortable with and who will love me forever. Hey there! My name is Roman and I am a handsome, energetic, Border Collie X. I always have lots of love to share and energy to burn! My previous owners did not teach me much but I’m smart and I know I can learn how to be a good dog. With further training and sufficient exercise, I will make an awesome companion. I may not be best for small children as I might knock them over in all my excitement. I’m a 1yr old, smart, eager to please, active, girl named Tizzie. I require a home where I will get daily exercise

My name is Tribble and I am a 6yr old Pomeranian looking for a new lap to cuddle on! I’m a pretty easy going little girl but I won’t tolerate being poked by young children and please -if I’m comfy in my kennel don’t disturb me! I love to cuddle and I’m happiest being carried or chilling on your lap as you read or watch TV. I am house and crate trained, used to other dogs and cats and looking for a loving new home! I’m Molly! I am a sweet, gentle, 18 month old, Shep X who was surrendered due to allergies. I am house and crate trained, used to attending doggy daycare and I enjoy the company of other dogs. However, I am not used to cats or young children. I know sit, down, stay, come and leave it. I just love to play ball and will fetch happily for hours... especially if you throw my ball in the lake! I will need a home where I’ll get plenty of exercise and playtime.

Pamela Clark, RMT, SAMT and playtime...which will be loads of fun because I love to chase balls. I also love the water, and enjoy a good cat chase, so a home without felines is probably best for me! My foster mom thinks I’m lovely and that whoever adopts me will be very lucky indeed.

Hinton & District SPCA My name is Jackson and I am as cute as can be! I am an 8 month old Pug/Spaniel. I am learning to walk on leash and I quite like to boogie off leash too! I am soon to be neutered and I love treats. I hope when I find my new family they bring me treats....where are you guys anyways? My name is Magic and I am a 10 week old female looking for a loving home. I love to be cuddled and would make an awesome pet. Everyone calls me Mandarin and I am a very outgoing girl. I like to stick close by so I never miss a pat or scratch. I am 1yr old and waiting for a home to call my own. I am 5 months old and they call me Roter. I was rescued when I was found in the motor of a vehicle. I am still a little shy so I will need lots of hugs and TLC in my new home. They named me Snowy and I obviously came by the name honestly... no dye jobs here! I am 1yr old and will purrrrr my way right into your heart.

My name is Buddy and I am 3yrs old. I am very laidback without a care in the world –except finding my very own home. Wouldn’t I look great draped across the family couch? My name is Toby and I am quite shy at first, but to know me is to love me! I need to go to a home with another dog to show me the ropes! I like company and I get along really well with Tonka, in fact we are walking buddies! Young children kind of scare me but I am a snuggly bug so if you like your four legged friends small and cute -come visit me! Tia is my name and finding a family is not just my game –it’s my mission!!! I am 10 months old and can’t wait until the lucky family who adopts me picks up the phone to tell the kind folks here they are on their way to meet me....please hurry I can’t wait to be in my new family’s arms! My name is Tonka! I am an old soul, around 8 human years old. At some point in my life I broke my ankle and I now have arthritis but that doesn’t stop me from going with Toby on our daily walks. I really enjoy riding shot gun with my head out the window to feel the wind though my hair!

Fort McMurray SPCA Hello, my name is Bruce! I am a very affectionate and playful orange tabby. I have a unique face, and people always tell me how handsome I am. I look like a big boy, but I am so light that you will want to carry me around all day, and I won’t mind a bit!

Hi, I’m Catrina. I just want to play! I am usually too sassy for the other cats here, but the people like my spunk, and I like them too, especially when they play with me and keep me entertained! The cuddles aren’t all bad either… My name is Sawyer! I am a playful cat that loves attention. I also enjoy the simpler pleasures in life and can spend hours playing with my favourite toy, a cardboard box! Let me come be the entertainer in your family!

My name is Baca and I am 13 months old. My dad was a Bluenose Pitbull and my mom was an American Pitbull...I am great ambassador for the breed. I am good with other dogs, cats and children of all ages. I’m pretty well a huge marshmallow and love everyone I meet. I am also potty trained and know my basic commands. Everyone calls me Edie. I am a 2yr old Collie/ Sheppard X. I am good in the car, housetrained, and listen very well. I am still working on my manners and can be timid occasionally, so I need a home that will work and spend time with me.

Hello, I’m Jerome! I am a calm and cool cat who likes to keep close by so I don’t miss anything like a cuddle. When I do go for a roam it is usually to find a nice quiet spot with a good view for a nap, but just call my name, and I’ll come running!

My name is Minou and I was found with my brother Max. We are about 10 weeks old, very sweet, and loving little kittens. We were found all by ourselves in the city. They call me Ranger. I am a 5 month old, extremely affectionate and sweet natured puppy. I will need training like any puppy, but I am smart, aim to please and learn quickly. I know how to sit and I’m nearly potty trained. I am quite active and would benefit from a playmate.

Hey there, yep there’s only me... well here that is. Next month I’ll bring the whole troop with me.. check us out then.

Have you hugged your pet today?

Chinook Winds Greyhound Rescue Foundation Hi, I’m Berneice. I’m 3yrs old and everyone tells me how pretty I am! I guess we black dogs aren’t always eye-catchers, so I must be something special! I am a happy girl, like to go on walks and love spending time with my people. I don’t even mind cats! I am, however, quite particular about who else lives in a home with me…I am almost embarrassed to admit it, but I’m afraid of men. I just can’t seem to get over it, no matter how nice they are to me. I would really prefer to be in a home with just women. I also don’t want to share my home with any girl dogs, but I would probably be okay with a boy dog. Being your one and only would be perfect, I’d really like that, and I’d be sure to love and adore you enough for two dogs! I’m loving and affectionate and have tons of great traits.

Hello everyone. My name is Emerald Dancer, but everyone calls me Em. I’m looking for my very own family to love, and I’ve been waiting an awfully long time. After a brief career as a racer, I went back to the farm and raised 4 litters of pups. I was a terrific mama, but now I’m really enjoying being carefree. In fact, it’s so nice to have no responsibilities or worries, I celebrate all the time! My foster family loves it when I run and play in the yard and say I’m just a delight to have around. On Christmas day I’m going to have my 9th birthday…I sure hope to be with my forever family by then. Can you make my wish come true?

Harley here...I am a Boxer/Lab X. I am simply gorgeous... the ladies all love me, the guys all want to be me. Don’t hate me because I am beautiful, just adore me. I am a confident, albeit cocky male that gets along well with dogs, cats, and kids. I have great manners and will love you completely, but I do have one little thing that seems to be causing me a bit of grief. I jump fence and I have wonder lust, be it wood or chain link...out I go off to visit! Good thing everyone that I come across in my travels absolutely adores me.

Do you know of a Volunteer in Animal Rescue who Deserves Recognition?

T

here are hundreds right here in Alberta who work tirelessly everyday, entirely for the well being of pets that others have let down. Although rewarding in many ways, it can also be a heart wrenching and thankless job. Help us recognize some of these fantastic individuals! December 5th is International Volunteer Day so we want to hear from you! Tell us about a volunteer who supports animal rescue...whether collecting old blankets to donate, fostering homeless pets or putting up posters. It does not matter how much time or money people give or raise, we just want to know how others are contributing and why you think they deserve a paw on the back! Send submissions (400 words or less) before November 5th by mail (address on Page 3), or email to rescuemag@ shaw.ca. Our Winner will be announced in our December issue and receive a special prize. local stories...local people...local pets

Huey says hi...Huey says adopt me...Huey says could I be cuter??? I belonged to a kind couple that loved us dearly, but, a few of us become a lot of us and that’s how it goes with no spay and neuter surgeries. When our Dad passed away our Mom was overwhelmed and had to give many of us away. Eight of us got lucky and came to PARS. I call us lucky because we are getting the vet care some of us desperately needed. We are getting spayed and neutered so we do not have to worry anymore about where our babies are going. Newt, I am some sort of little dude, not sure what besides fun and loving! I like to ride on the quad, love kids and other dogs, and although I haven’t met the cats yet I could if you ask. I am only 30lbs which is absolutely fabulous for a companion size -the new shabby sheek! Imagine yourself walking down the street with this fabulous chocolate brown best friend that stares at you with only love in his eyes, and greets every new person with that charming appeal only a guy like me could have!

Thank You to the Siebert Family for sponsoring my spot Hi my name is Bull. I was rescued from a pound, but now I’m at Border Collie Friends Rescue. I was very overweight when I came so I’ve been on diet and have lost a few pounds. I’m about 23” at the shoulder and still about 80lbs but like I said, I’m working on that. I’m good around cats, dogs and I love people of all sizes. I am crate trained too. I’m an all round A1 mister nice guy but I’m terrified of thunder storms and would need help in feeling secure when they come along. What’s In The Stars For Your Pets This Month? Aries: March 21 - April 19 Black cats prowling, canines howling...and oh so many goodies! Avoid all people treats...chocolate and raisins in particular are terribly toxic for many of you. Remind your humans to put candy in a safe place. Taurus: April 20 - May 20 Take a few chances this month with your heart. You know that family member, neighbor or child who is a little reserved? Approach them gently with an open spirit, good manners and clean paws...you may be pleasantly surprised. Gemini: May 21 - June 20 Eye of newt and puppy dog tails may be in the witches brew, but not this year little Gemini rescues. Be of good Halloween cheer, you are safe now and in good hands. Cancer: June 21 - July 22 Cancer canines it’s time to relax! You will always worry about your food, your toys, your people & kids. Remember that you’re not in charge! Practice keeping calm and stay under control...don’t have a canary! Leo: July 23 - August 22 The rocky road of life will bring trials, tribulations and many joys this month. Keep your nose high furry friends, fall’s bounty of treasure awaits you -if you play your people right. Virgo: August 23 - September 22 Leaves are falling now like your forever family fell the first time they saw you; you’ll never be alone again. Let your eyes do the talking and tell them know how much they mean to you. Libra: September 23 - October 22 Use caution at the end of the month, with Halloween pranksters and all that traffic around the house you must not stray! Stick close to home, this is NOT an ideal time to go adventuring alone. Scorpio: October 23 - November 21 Feline Scorpions it’s time to get the monkey off your back -you know your weaknesses and there’s no time like the present. We all have our vices but yours need attention...and it wouldn’t hurt to lay off the cat nip either. Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 Opportunity may knock...but don’t answer! Deny any impulses you might have to play with the little two-legger’s toys. You know which toys are for you and now is not a good time to push your luck. Capricorn: December 22 - January 19 For all of you feathered Capricorns out there, a word to the wise. If flying south feels right to you then it’s even more important that you stick close to home; stay warm and loved with your families. Aquarius: January 20 - February 18 It’s not time to hibernate quite yet Aquarians, there’s still plenty of work to do. Clean yourself up, cut your nails and get into the groomers. Stop dogging your responsibilities and get all those loose ends tied up. Pisces: February 19- March 20 Fears may be prevalent near the end of the month but don’t let the Goblins get the better of you. Take a big breath and swallow your fright...everyone has a mask and underneath them all is just another fuzzy face that wants to be loved.

What if your best friend got lost? Licenses and adoptions help save pet’s lives

F

or the staff at the City’s Animal Services Facility, nothing is more rewarding than the news that one of our lost animals has found a loving home. We make every effort to return pets to their owners and to ensure lost or stray companion animals have a safe haven. Sadly, some pets don’t find their way back home. The City’s strong relationship with adoption agencies gives animals an excellent chance at a new life. By working closely with adoption groups, we help lost animals find families that will shelter, nurture and love them. Last year Animal Services received almost 3,500 lost dogs. Thankfully, most of the dogs were licensed, and we were able to return them to their families. However, of almost 5,000 cats, only one in 10 were licensed to help us return them to their original families. Edmonton’s licensing program and local adoption agencies do their best to save pet’s lives, but we require your support to ensure each animal that enters our facility is licensed and identifiable. The stories here are just two of the reasons why City Animal Services, in partnership with rescue organizations, makes every effort to re-home a lost pet. Because of the determined efforts of our staff, the unfailing labors of rescue groups and the commitment from foster families, these animals have a second chance at life. We urge you to encourage your friends and neighbours to licence their cats and dogs and to consider adopting a companion pet from one of the various rescue groups operating throughout the province. It may just change your life. And save the life of a pet.

Benny was brought into City Animal Services after one of our Animal Control Officers found him caught in a trap. He was visibly shaken, avoiding all forms of social contact. Because Benny had no licence or micro chip, we were unable to trace his owner. After Benny was examined by our veterinary technicians, our staff closely worked with him to alleviate his fear and anxiety. In just a few days, Benny became much more comfortable with social interaction, but he still wasn’t a suitable candidate for adoption. As a result, our staff forwarded him to foster care for temporary housing. He quickly warmed up to the foster group and they decided to provide him with a permanent home, living with them. One foster member recently wrote, “We love him so much! He has learned to speak and roll over and his best friend is our orange kitten ‘Jerry’.” Benny will live out the rest of his days as a ‘spokesdog’ for their group; a reminder of the difference care and compassion can make in an animal’s life.

Zoey, a six-year old Elkhound X, was found wandering the streets. Because she had a licence, we were able to contact her owners. While at Animal Services, Zoey was a very gentle, friendly and complacent dog who became well acquainted with City staff. During her stay with us, Zoey’s owners decided to surrender her because they no longer had the resources to properly care for her. Shortly afterwards, an adoption agency provided this lovely dog a fair chance at finding a new home. After only a short week in foster care, Zoey was adopted into a wonderful family who had been searching for their ideal companion pet. In a recent e-mail to the rescue coordinator, Zoey’s new owner wrote, “Zoey is absolutely amazing! She is totally the perfect dog for us. We love her so, so, so much. Thank you so much for allowing us to adopt her.” Zoey now spends her days taking walks through the off-leash parks, riding along on family outings and playing with the neighbourhood children.
