Festivities are in the works and the excitement of friends and family gathering is growing with all of the preparations. The family pets know what’s coming...lots of people always means a lot of food, and usually a few suckers who can’t resist sharing! Having loved ones visit is wonderful but the feeling is hampered slightly when you’re spending the night scrubbing carpets and end up in the vet’s office. If you know this is a strong possibility at your gathering try to be proactive by talking to other guests and letting them know what is, and is not, allowed when it comes to feeding your pet. Sometimes if they are provided with an appropriate treat they will not even try to slip people food in the mix at all. If you are the culprit then try and be smart about it! If you have a dog you want to share turkey dinner with don’t be handing them turkey skin/bones, cream filled potatoes, spiced up stuffing or cheese covered broccoli. Instead try a few small pieces of plain white meat (no fixins’) and a couple small pieces of plain cooked carrots or broccoli. Also be sure to watch out for your pets wellbeing later this month around Halloween. Between ornaments, candles, costumes and candy alone there are many stomach upsets or accidents waiting to happen. With ghosts and goblins invading the neighbourhood on the big night it’s also a good plan to have your pets inside, safe, before the trick-or-treaters are on the loose! Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Jamie Hunter Book Review

How to be the Leader of the Pack…and have your dog love you for it! by Patricia B. McConnell, Ph.D

My bookshelf is lined with hundreds of books, many of them read numerous times and worth keeping around, but others left, never opened, creating more work by gathering dust. Somewhere between cook books, software program manuals and college textbooks lies a collection of somewhat boring dog training and behavioral paperweights that, even with the best of intentions, I could not suffer or stay awake to read through. Nothing can replace a ‘hands on’ training class, but I think this book is truly worth its weight in gold and should be mandatory reading for every dog guardian! With 12 easy to understand points covered in just 15 pages you can start applying the simple, but life changing, techniques the same day you bring it home. This book does not go over how to “sit”, “come”, “rollover”, etc. but rather gives you a dozen simple concepts to address everyday canine behaviors that you and your family can easily incorporate into your daily living patterns. The natural approach used to implement safe and effective boundaries is based on dog behavior and their communication. How to be the Leader of the Pack gives the reader the opportunity to be ‘Top Dog’ in their home by being assertive, without having to be aggressive. It gives dog owners a straightforward guide to develop a sound and natural leadership status in their pack and an understanding of how not to encourage unwanted behavior. The methods are easy to understand, simple to apply and have amazing results. In fact, this one won’t even make it to your bookshelf as you will be lending it out to every dog owner you know! Patricia McConnell PHD is a world renowned behavioral and training authority in companion animals. Among many other books she has a small series of fast, easy to read, booklets touching on basic behavioral and training issues. www.patriciamcconnell.com

Beagle Paws Rescue Now seriously, have you ever seen anything cuter than me? My name is Georgie and I’m begging for my forever home to come and adopt me. I am about 2yrs old and love to snuggle. I’m an all around good dog, but I’m not so sure I want to share my new home with a cat. I love long walks and would be thrilled to have another doggie friend in my new home.

Oscar here! Not Oscar the Grouch though! I’m having too much fun in my foster home to be a grouch. I’m a happy, energetic, 1yr old Beagle and I’m good with dogs. I even get along with cats! I went in to see the doggie doctor and he fixed me so you don’t have to worry about me needing repairs…funny, I didn’t even know that I was broken! Wow! So this is what Alberta looks like. I just arrived from Newfoundland and I’m telling you this is HUGE. I hope there is an equally huge heart looking to adopt a friendly, energetic and handsome little boy like me. I love other dogs and I’m good with cats too!

Grande Prairie SPCA Hello my name is Meredith and I am a BEAUTIFUL girl! I have been at the shelter since March and I have put on a bit of weight. I have stayed with a couple of foster homes too but I sure hope my forever family takes me home soon; I need a change of scenery!

My name is Hope! I am a Dilute Calico around 9mths old. I just came back from foster care and I had a blast with the two little girls! I am settled back in now and ready to go to my forever home…. who could pass up this cute little face?

One would think that a 10yr old sweetheart like me would have somewhere else to be? Well I do, but for now I am here at the G.P. SPCA where I have warmth, love, and they feed me very good food. My name is Miss Mow and I would love to sit on your lap and just let time pass. Maybe you will take me home and we can let the time pass together?

Hey, my name is Whiskey and boy do I love to run and play! Whenever I see someone come towards my kennel my tail wags so much that my bum starts to wiggle and I get the biggest grin on my face. I am just 3yrs old and have been here since June. I forgot to add some more awesome things about me. I know how to sit, shake, rollover and fetch!

My name is Jezabelle and I am a 7mth old Catahoula Leopard Dog -whew that’s a couple of big words! I am a bit shy. When I go out for walks I love to sniff here, sniff there, and sniff everywhere! I love running around with other dogs! I am looking for a home with older kids; the little ones still scare me a bit.

Sit! Down! Come! Stay! Rollover! Fetch! The name is Bruce and I can do them all…although sometimes I have to be reminded to mind my manners with other dogs. I am big, fluffy and full of spirit! My trainer says I have lots of potential; I just need the right owner and consistency...whatever that is. Hey! bring on the Frisbee and let’s play!!

Paws And Claws Animal Rescue I’m Flicka. I had Sarcoptic Mange, and was wild with itch from the mites. The kind ladies who visited the Sunchild Reserve regularly threw me biscuits with medication and finally the itch went away. The biscuits tasted just awful, but they still filled an empty space. I am 11.5yrs old and had a litter of puppies last year. Although permission was given to take me, I would not allow anyone to touch me. People in my experience have cruel hands. One day I was scrounging for something to eat in a thunderstorm when I smelled some lovely cat food. I skirted around the wire box and finally tiptoed into the trap…it was very scary and I screamed in fright. Next thing I know I was in fostercare and the ladies that saved me kept petting me and talking funny baby talk. They kept marveling to one another about how I never show any aggression no matter how scared I am. I am a big, beautiful and sweet puppy. I weigh about 60lbs and I can’t wait to find someone I can trust and give my undying loyalty to.

Spay/Neuter Action Program (SNAP) My name is Koda. I am a 1yr old handsome Shepherd X. I am housetrained, leash trained and I love to ride in the car. I love everyone, but it takes me a while to get to know people because I am extremely shy. I need a calm and patient family to help me come out of my shell. I am currently in foster care with other dogs, cats and children.........I love them all & I would love you too.

Hi everyone my name is Sneakers. I am an American Eskimo around 5yrs old. I am currently in foster care and get along well with cats, other dogs & children. The best part about me (other than I am super duper sweet and special) is that I am already house trained. I also love to play fetch & I even know all my basic commands. I’m one handsome guy, don’t pass me by!

Hi my name is Kissi, my sister and I were featured in last month’s magazine. Sadly, nobody came forward to adopt us both. My sister got adopted, I’m sad to see her go but happy that she did manage to find a good home. However I am still waiting. Snap has given me a friend to play with so I wouldn’t be lonely as I lived with my sister all my life. I’m just a pup and need a mom. Will you love me?

Hi my name is Delilah! I am about 5yrs old and no one is really sure what breed I am. I am super sweet and I adore people. I would love to sit with you for hours and just hang out. I am good with kids and other dogs, but I’m not really sure about cats…I am such a good girl though I’m sure things would all work out.

KITTENS KITTENS KITTENS Snap has Kittens! Black kittens, orange kittens, tabby kittens, grey kittens, torti kittens, calico kittens, torbi kittens...Boys and girls, short and long haired kittens. All sweet, all cuddly and all looking for their forever homes. If you are considering adopting a kitten please call us.

Hi, my name is Koda too. I’m a 5mth old, male Catahoula/Hound /Black Lab X. I am smart and playful, with lots of energy. I know how to sit, lie-down and can’t wait for you to teach me more! I hope you have a big yard because I want to show you how FAST I can run! I love to play with other dogs and love people too.

Hello, my name is Autumn & I was rescued by SNAP from the pound so very little is known about my past. All you really need to know is that I am just a petite little girl looking for a family to love me. I am very laid back & I have a super sweet disposition. I would love to snuggle with you on the couch while you watch TV. Would you like to snuggle with me?

Hi there, my name is Mr. Happy and I am a very lovable guy who is a little shy at first, but I warm up really fast. I’m really glad SNAP came to my rescue, because my days were numbered at the pound. I don’t know why they thought I was feral, because I’m the most lovable guy around. I’m currently in foster care with children, other cats & dogs of all sizes and I love them all! My favorite thing to do is cuddle!

Edmonton Humane Society (EHS) If you’re looking for an adorable and extremely affectionate rabbit, then I’m your guy! I’m Bulgaria, a young lop-eared male who came to the EHS in early May. All I ask is to spend time with me instead of leaving me in my cage all day, feed and care for me properly, and have me neutered. If I’m neutered, then I’d be even more affectionate and the chances of me ever developing cancer would be very low. I’m Griffin, a 2yr old, male, American Staffordshire Terrier. I was a stray at the city pound and transferred here at the end of August. I’m an energetic dog who needs a family that can keep up with me, so it’s recommended that I be placed in a home with members over the age of 16. I get along well with other dogs, even though I have a “rough and tumble” play style. I’m Tiger, a 1yr old female. I’m a tiny, sweet, fun-loving, energetic and loving girl! My kittens and I were brought to the city pound as strays and transferred here at the end of June. My kittens have since been adopted. I love to cuddle, play with the other cats and I LOVE a good snuggle and scratch under my chin from ANY human. I’m a petite little Rottie X named Babbs. Been here awhile, adopted once and then returned. I apparently need a firm owner who will not let me get away with stuff. I love the water and could spend all day playing in there with the other dogs. If you are looking for a great companion and are willing to spend time teaching me right from wrong please call today!

Prairie Animal Rescue Society (PARS) My name is Yollo! How about you and I have a meet and greet? They figure one of my ancestors was a Golden Retriever. I am 1yr old, full of energy and love my foster kids. I prefer humans to all the dogs here. I have been spayed, vaccinated and I’m just waiting for a ride out of here. Did I mention my bags are packed?

How about a perfect love story? Our names are Romeo and Juliet and we are very devoted to each other. My sweet Juliet recently had her eye removed from what PARS thinks was a dog bite. She is coping well and overcoming her disability quickly. We are about 2yrs old, full of love and would like a home together.

I came in recently with my son JJ after our owner passed away. The kids call me Rambo and I am about 4yrs old. I love cuddling with the kids and following them around. I am getting neutered right away and have not met the cats yet.

My name is JJ the golden boy. I have soft golden hair and I’m very well mannered. I’m about 1yr old and came in with my dad Rambo (Above). We love the kids here and enjoy all the attention they give us. We like being here but we are eager for our new beginnings.

T

he unthinkable has happened — my foster dog has escaped from my yard. As I pin my missing dog poster to the bulletin board at Hermitage Veterinary Hospital in northeast Edmonton, I realize my husband and I are not alone in our sadness and desperation. The board already includes the poster of a lost Shepherd cross that bolted from its owner during its first off-leash dog park experience, and I also notice the poster of a lost eight-month-old English Bull Terrier that, ironically, belongs to the friend of a friend. I take comfort in knowing I am not alone, but I feel no less helpless and no less humiliated. How could this have happened? Hera, a Husky with striking blue eyes, wriggled under our gate and vanished after a nearly two-hour foot pursuit. Now all that is left is the search. Weeks pass, and we are lucky enough to spot her on several occasions, but each time we find her, she bolts and vanishes… again. Once we get close enough that her fur literally slips through my husband’s fingers as he pitches forward and is left with a face full of mud. This is almost too much to bear.

It might require a miracle for us to bring Hera home, but we will never give up hope — we will do what we can, when we can, for as long as we can. On the bright side, since we began our search on August 20, 2009 we have managed to catch two stray dogs and return them to their owners. Strangely, one of them was a white Husky with blue eyes — an almost exact likeness of Hera. Here are some of the things we are doing to find Hera, and some of the things we wish we could have done before she escaped.

The heartbreak of the escaped pet Submitted By Lori Trudgeon

How to protect your pet Obtaining a pet license and getting your vet clinic to tattoo and – better yet – microchip your pet will ensure you are contacted if your pet ends up at your local animal control services facility, commonly referred to as the pound. The importance of pet identification hit me hardest when I visited the pound to look for Hera. They told me over 40 cats had been turned in during the past two days. The ones with identification will probably be returned to their owners and some will be claimed by rescue groups, but I expect many of these cats will be euthanized. This is the tragic fate of hundreds if not thousands of pets, mostly cats, each year.

Hera is a somewhat unique case. She is an extremely cautious dog that spent years tied on a short chain in a stand of trees in almost complete isolation. She was one of 24 Huskies claimed What to do if you lose by rescue groups when it was your pet discovered that their owner no If you lose your pet, here are Hera, last sighting September 25th, northeast Edmonton longer wanted them. Northern Alberta Society for Animal Protection (NASAP) I’m Cleo, a 5yr old female Torbie. I’m a love-bug and I really enjoy belly-rubs. I like to sit on your lap and soak up ALL of your attention. I am fine with other friendly animals and I would like to find a quiet, indoor-only forever home.

Hello! I’m Jinx, a beautiful Manx (I don’t have a tail) around 6yrs old. I have lovely dilute Tortie with white markings. I’m a charming kitty that loves people and attention. You are going to ADORE my outgoing and sweet personality.

It’s me, Caleb! I’m a lovely and sweet boy around 4-5yrs old. I like other friendly pets and can hardly wait to have my very own people. Please consider adopting me, I would make a wonderful family member and lap cat!

I’m Fluffy and I’m about 10yrs old. I’m an even-tempered wonderful cat, and I can guarantee that you will absolutely fall in love with me. I have a quiet personality, but still love to play and attack my toy mice and balls. I’m looking for a quiet home where I will be cared for and loved for the rest of my life.

Hi there, they call me Arlen and I am a 5yr old Heeler/Lab X. I got myself in a bit of a scrape and had a badly gashed leg when bylaw picked me up. I was taken to the vet clinic, stitched up and given something to kill the fleas and stop the itching! I am super affectionate and get along fine with other dogs, but the horses are a bit of a chasing temptation…same with the cats. Where I come from that’s what dogs do!

Hello, my name is Meeka and I was surrendered because there was a change in my family’s circumstances. I am a well mannered mature dog (6yrs old) and I’m used to being crated. I am in good shape and weigh 70lbs. I have a little allergy thing going on in my eyes during certain times of the year and need eye drops for that, but they are non prescription and inexpensive. Can you give me a loving home with regular walks where I will be made a fuss of?

I’m Charlee, and I’m HUGE on personality! I need a fenced yard (wooden as I climb chain link) to keep me safe, and lots of exercise. They say I’m like velcro because I like to stay close. I am loyal and I have some experience with children. I had trouble trusting but I have really improved. I would be a great jogging partner and excel at agility, fly ball, Frisbee, or any sport really!

OK… hands up…. who out there is looking for a super friendly young dog with bundles of energy and the friendliest personality in the whole wide world? Well, your search is over here I am, the one and only Lucien! I still need direction but if my training continues I will do wonderfully!

Hi there, I’m Mackenzie and I came to NASAP when I was only a few hours old. My mom gave birth to my brother and I in a garden shed. I’m now 12wks old and can purr up a storm! I’m a happy, healthy and playful guy who loves attention and cuddles. My name is Cookie and I am an absolute gem. I am very friendly, attentive, gentle and so very pretty! I love people and I get along well with other dogs. My tail is always wagging and they think I am about 6yrs old. I am a Rotti/Collie X and will make a wonderful companion!

Hey you! Yeah, YOU! Are you looking for an energetic, fun loving pup to add excitement in your home? I’m an 8mth old smart, loving, beautiful girl. I get along great with other dogs and like cats. I know how to sit, down, walk nice, wait and I love car rides! I would do great with dog experienced owners looking for a companion to run with or do some other high energy activity daily. To meet me call DDARS at 780-483-0931.

Forget Me Not Cat Sanctuary Hello! My name is Cheddar! My previous owners moved into a no-pets apartment and had to give me up. This made them very sad because I just might be one of the bestbehaved 1yr old little cats that you ever did meet. I’m very quiet and I get along great with the other cats here. Even though I don’t like to make a racket, I love to play and I am very gentle. Everyone says that I am very sweet and affectionate. I’ve learned to stand on my two hind legs and reach up for a pat on the head which works like a charm. In addition to my friendly personality, I have a beautiful soft orange and white short hair tabby coat. Hi! I love the new name I was given which is Cheyenne and I love my chance at a new life even more. Life on the street was pretty rough for me and my kitten, Cricket, but that didn’t get us down because we both have a very positive attitude. After a short stay at the pound, we were whisked off to the sanctuary, and we are now both ready to graduate to our own adoptive homes. I’m just under 1yrs old and am a soft grey tabby short haired girl (with silver highlights!). I’m a tiny bit shy for only a moment and love to be cuddled and petted and then I purr up a storm. You got it! I’m Cheyenne’s little girl. I came into this world sometime in early April and my mom took very good care of me, even though we lived on the street the first few months. She always saved the best little bits for me to eat, so I have grown into a healthy lively kitten with lots of energy. I love to play and cuddle and my mom is teaching me to purr real loud like she does. My black coat is short and very shiny and they say I’m very striking, but I don’t think they mean that I would hit anyone, because I’m a very gentle kind little cat, just like my mom.

Hi, I’m Morgan and I’m not quite 1yr old, but still I’ve been a very good mommy. My six kittens were born in early June in an old abandoned trailer on a piece of property which I initially did not know was home to some very large dogs. The kind lady who lived there discovered us about two weeks later and before we could be hurt, we were all whisked away to the sanctuary. Three of my little children have already been adopted and the other three and I are waiting our turn I’m a friendly, very pretty gray tabby who is cuddly, affectionate and would make a wonderful addition to a loving family. Our mom is Morgan and we are a beautiful litter of kittens who were born in early June and were ready to go to our very own adoptive homes around the end of September. My name is Sable. I am extra special because I am Brody Sable Kirby polydactyl, that means I have more toes than usual. My brothers and I are all playful, sweet, cuddly and affectionate. We can’t wait to find our human companions so we can show you just how good we really are. This relaxed and friendly kitty is me, Willow! I’m a beautiful brown and orange shorthair tabby girl and the vet says I’m a little over 1yr old. I had no previous experience at raising kids but they say I’m pretty good at it. I had two beautiful babies named Raisin and Tangerine who have been adopted. My dad at the sanctuary called them my little Willow branches and their new adoptive mom calls them her pussy willows! I get along great with the other kitties here and love to sit beside a human and chat away in my soft chirping voice and be my sweet affectionate self.

Theo

Snickers

I’m Dinah and I’m from Carolina (just-kidding)! I’m a very pretty brown and tan medium hair tabby and approximately 1yr old. I am very affectionate and sweet with humans but would do the very best in a family where I was the only cat. With no other cats around, I am very peaceful and unruffled and I would be a source of great comfort to those around me. I’m not a demanding cat and I love to play by myself, but I also love to cuddle and purr up a storm, which can put you to sleep just like a lullaby.

Chester

Grady

We are a beautiful litter of kittens who were born in early July and will be ready to go to our very own adoptive homes around the end of October. We were delivered to the pound without our mom, but she was very loving to us while we were with her and she taught us to have kind, gentle, trusting hearts. Therefore, we are the most affectionate bunch of kittens that you ever met. We love to climb up a human’s chest and just lay there and cuddle and purr our little hearts out. We are all very playful, but not in a hyper way, and we are mostly peaceful and quiet and get along with everyone.

Second Chance Animal Rescue Society (SCARS) My name is Bon and my siblings and I came from the pound. I am pretty darn handsome if I do say so myself and everyone says I will make a very loving and attentive companion. I am about 3mths old and we are not sure where my incredibly blue eyes came from but we do know I LOVELOVELOVE attention! I can’t wait to be best friends with my new people and belong to a pack of my own.

My name is Jackie. I am very sweet, have a gentle disposition and love attention from you two-leggers… despite coming to SCARS with a rope embedded in my neck. The vet told me how good I was and that I will be just fine. I’m already so much more comfortable, and guess what? My foster mom promised me no one would ever treat me that way again! I am good with other dogs & cats, smart, friendly and not yet 1yr old. Update: My neck has healed very well and my hair is even growing back and I’ve also gained some weight I am a truly wonderful and loyal girl. Everyone at SCARS calls me Jacobe and they always tell me I’m super duper cute! I am likely a Terrier X and they think I will end up a fair size but it’s hard to tell now because I am still just 5mths old. I’m very friendly and I love attention of any kind. I seem to be good with other dogs and can hardly wait to meet my new family!

My name is Lizzie and I arrived just in time for print so I have high hopes that I will be discovered here in PRM! A kind lady discovered me wandering around scavenging for meals while working in a Northern AB community. I’m a lucky girl to be rescued before our AB winter hits, there are so many more out there. They are guessing I may be a Collie/Hound X and so far I love everyone. I’m still very thin but I’m working hard on that…maybe you could give me some extra treats at your house?

My name is Huff and I am one heck of a sweet guy. I am a Red Heeler X and I absolutely LOVE people. I’m still new but so far I am a wonderful boy to have around. Loyal, devoted, eager to please, smart, and 100% ready & willing to commit for life.

Thank You

SCARS celebrated their fourth annual Canines & Cocktails “It’s Magic” Silent & Live Auction on Sept. 18th. Nearly 400 supporters were greeted by rescues up for adoption and Magician, David Thiel, before enjoying an action packed evening of auctions and a wonderful dinner at The Palace Banquet and Hall Facility. With fantastic guest speakers, an amazing video (produced by PRM’S Virginia Marando and in memory of SCARS volunteer Nikki Jeannotte) and such a wide variety of items to view, the night went by very quickly! Table favours included goodies from The Bone & Biscuit or Tail Blazer locations, and table wine was provided by T.Pysyk Trucking and Inspek Crushing Ltd. Between the hundreds of items to bid on, lots of great prizing and the beautiful centre pieces (framed photos of rescues and the crowd loving “Petal Puppies” from Melissa’s Flowers) very few went home empty handed! The rescues of SCARS would like to thank everyone who donated to C&C or volunteered their time. We would also like to extend a special thank you to Seanna Collins who graciously acted as our Master of Ceremonies, and to Gary Hanna, of Gary Hanna Auctions Ltd., who also volunteered his time to be our Auctioneer.

Wild Rose Equine Rescue & Sanctuary

The McDonald Family Animal Rescue

My name is Calypso. I am a 2yr old Arab Pony X filly with unusual coloring. I am quite shy but I’m learning to trust people. I was seized in a neglect case last year with a bunch of my friends. I am young and will need proper training, so I will need an experienced adult home. I should also go where there will be other horses for me to buddy up with.

My name is Skeeter and I am a 3mth old American Quarter Horse colt (registration pending). I am very curious, playful, and will probably mature to around 15 hands high. I am very handsome but also a handful! I love to run and play with my friends so I must find a home where there will be other horses. I will need a lot of guidance to help me grow up to be a “gentleman”, so an experienced home would be best.

I am Checkers and this is my little brother Mighty Mouse. We came from a pound but now live at a foster home with my mom Asha, and my two other siblings Bibi and Mimi. Mighty Mouse was born to a mom that couldn’t feed him. When my mom heard about all of his siblings passing on she moved right in. He sure eats a lot though and he doesn’t know how to play, yet either! Mom says he’ll grow bigger and be chasing me around soon enough.

You have caught me at one of my favourite pastimes...sleeping. My name is Frieda and I also love hanging out on my scratching post. All of my babies have been adopted and it’s my turn now. I have extra toes, so I look like I have giant hands with thumbs. I have been living with other cats and dogs, and I have even learned that birds are off limits.

Whitecourt Homeless Animal Rescue Foundation (WHARF) They call me Flora and I am a total sweetheart. I love to run which is good because I need to drop a few pounds! I am great on & off leash and I have had no accidents in my foster home. I am a pure bred Black Lab that ended up in the pound, the vets say I was likely used for breeding because of the shape I was in. But now I am spayed and can finally focus on just being a dog. Woof!!

My name is Feist and I am a 6mth old Dane/Boxer X. I am really docile and I get along with everyone, except those little balls of quills. My sister, Fergie, and I like to chase and play with them, but we always have to go to the vet after which is not fun! I am very gentle with children and I love to snuggle on the couch.

Greetings, I am Donkey. I am one gentle boy and that is why I don’t know why my mom just left me behind to fend for myself. What could I have done to deserve something so terrible? I also don’t know why I only have half a tail‌thankfully it just adds to my cuteness! When I get really excited it wags like a dogs tail. I promise to be your best friend furever!

Good day I am Lacey. I am an 8mth old Australian Shepherd X that is oh so cute! Your search is over. Here I am, just as gorgeous as you pictured me right? One ear up, one ear down, fluffy black coat and very well mannered‌what else could you ask for? Better hurry or someone else will come and snag me.

Our names are Izzy and Zoey and we are the best kittens in the world. A lot of our other foster siblings have been adopted and we are just waiting patiently for our furever home. We are quite playful, very gentle and we adore everyone. We love just plopping down beside you or rolling in your arms.

We are Bonkers and Noodles! We are brother and sister and have lots of love to give. We came to WHARF because there was just not enough room in our house with the little ones on the way. We are happy that we are getting a second chance at having a new family.

My name is Skippy and I am a trooper. I am getting used to walking on three legs but sometimes I am a little wobbly. I was found on a lawn with a shattered and severely infected leg, but now I am destined to live a very long and comfortable life. I am a 3-legged wonder and I can’t wait to meet my new family.

Hinton & District SPCA My name is Tar and since I came to the SPCA in July I have been busy learning my manners. My leash skills have improved and I am busy making friends with Shasta. I love to fetch and will do it for hours. I need a home with people who have previous dog experience as I am pretty strong minded. Give A Dog A Spot:

Happy Birthday Ryan! Love Buck, Lilly, Mowgli and Red

Paws For Life (PAWS) My name is Pheobe! I am a Miniature Pincher who is roughly 2yrs old. I love relaxing in bed but need a home that is willing to take training classes with me. I get along great with other dogs and cats, but it does take me a while to warm up to men.

Hello! I am a 7yr old Golden Retriever/ German Shepherd X named Shasta. I’m very cute but I am scared of other female dogs and children. I do not respond well when I am stressed. I need to go to a home with no children or teenagers. My name is Yankee and I may be small but I am tough! I am a Jack Russell/ Miniature American Eskimo X. I enjoy running off leash and HATE being kenneled. Cages freak me out! I am all about being sweet and nice until you put me in a cage.

Hi there, my Name is Sophie and I am a Maltese X. I am great at giving cuddles and I love playing with other dogs. I went to a foster home for the weekend and the foster mom was happy to report that I had no accidents!! I am looking for my furever home. Hi there, my name is Phillip and I am an adorable Shih Tzu X. I get along great with the other dogs, cats, and people (including kids). I need a kind and loving home that is willing to go back to the basics with me and teach me about manners.

I am a Lab X named Loca. I am beautiful and I know it! I don’t mind most male dogs except for when they jump on me. I would love to find some canine friends to play with. I get along with Yankee and he likes to play with me!

Humane Animal Rescue Team (hart)

Our names are Kally, Thunder, Raine, Duffy and Johnny. Are we not huggable? Look at us, we are walking, running, wagging balls of cream colored love! Unfortunately, our mom was too young to take care of us and left us to fend for ourselves. She didn’t mean to, but she didn’t want a litter of pups – that’s why we think spaying and neutering is so important. A nice bunch of people took us in and now we are bigger, stronger, healthier and cuddlier. As much fun as we have together, all this talk about furever homes has us really excited to find our own families. That is going to be fun – are you up for it?

The heartbreak of the escaped pet Continued from page 8

out the area where the pet was last seen. For example, post it at local businesses, grocery store bulletin boards, vet clinics, police stations, churches, community leagues, and give it to your neighbours and friends. The poster should include a photo, a description (breed, coat color, eye color, sex, collar, and any identifying marks), area lost, date lost, and your phone number. • Canvass your neighbourhood as often as you can (talk to dog walkers, joggers, construction workers, bus drivers) and give your poster to as many people as possible. • If you know where you pet may be hiding, consider setting a humane cage trap. If you do this, you need to get permission from the land owner and you need to monitor the cage every few hours. I hope the anguish of a lost pet never happens to you, but remember that it could. Please do what you can right now to protect your pet: license, spay/neuter, tattoo and microchip. If you lose your pet, start looking right away and don’t stop. Get in your car, get on your bike, talk to your neighbours, talk to strangers, talk to construction workers, put up posters, place ads, do whatever you can – but don’t lose heart, your pet is out there somewhere and you are not alone in your search. You will find as we did that others care too, many, many others. Find these people, lean on them, let them give you hope! Most of all, never give up! Good luck. Hi I’m Roxy! I’m very affectionate and love human contact. I am a self confident blonde and don’t mind hanging out by myself.

Stella here! I too am an angel and I love to follow the gang everywhere. I am sweet, cuddly and love to play.

Hearts & Hooves My name is George and I am an 8yr old gelding. I was in bad shape when I was rescued but I’m now happy and healthy. I am very shy and need time to come out of my shell, but I have a sweet disposition. I need a quiet home and promise to be more than content just to mow your lawn! I’m Vinnie, a 14yr old chestnut gelding. I am very laidback and get along well with other horses. I also like to follow my human friends around in the hopes of finding treats in their pockets!

What’s In The Stars For Your Pets This Month? Aries: March 21 - April 19 Sorry Aries, bad news...depending on how you look at it I guess! Many of you are due for a spay or neuter this month. Don’t worry, it’s definitely for the best...try to thank your two-leggers for caring when it’s all done. Taurus: April 20 - May 20 It is high time to take a stand! Whether you are the cat -and the dog keeps eating your food, or the dog -whose people have placed you in a ‘fashionable’ raincoat ...it’s time to stand up straight and howl “no more”. Gemini: May 21 - June 20 For the Gemini ferrets out there a special message. When the house dog is being a pain or the bird just won’t shut up it’s time to relax and quit the hissing, chirping and chatter. No one likes a complainer after all! Cancer: June 21 - July 22 The vet may need to see you again this month but don’t go getting all emotional about it. You will be better off taking the medical advice so be sure to pay attention...and cash in on extra cookies and belly rubs! Leo: July 23 - August 22 Most everyone is up for a good roll around in something smelly, but use caution on timing as it may be a turn off for some. Try to play it safe for now and it will pay off later. Just keep your little paws clean! Virgo: August 23 - September 22 Keep careful watch over your finances this month. Funding will be tight around the 25th and if you don’t plan ahead, you may find yourself making dents in your nest egg. Libra: September 23 - October 22 Although inviting, you must stay away from shoes, children’s toys, remote controls and eyeglasses. Your patience, and eagerness to please, should be justly rewarded with the proper teething tools by the 21st. Scorpio: October 23 - November 21 Beware of those turkey bones! Everyone seems to know yet somehow the 4 leggers always seem to find a way. Keep your nose in your food bowl and you can avoid some serious pain and large bills from the vet! Sagittarius: November 22 - December 21 This is a month of personal growth for you. Be sure to take some quiet time to get to know your inner puppy or discover that sociable little kitten in you waiting to party! Capricorn: December 22 - January 19 Listen to your loved ones they only want what’s best for you and you know what they say, Birds of a Feather Flock Together! You may want to avoid the rougher alley cat crowd this month to avoid unfair judgement. Aquarius: January 20 - February 18 Aquarian cats this is your lucky month. Clean litters, ripened trash treasures, and catching basement spiders is right up your alley. Choose your prey, the moths and spiders don’t stand a chance!
