Message Opportunities It’s wonderful when people can still reach down into their hearts and find a way to provide for the needs of others in tough economic times.
This is exactly what I see when I look at programs being launched such as the Route 66 Employee Giving Campaign, designed to provide funds for the purchase of two new vans for PCRMC’s Patient Transportation Program. If you don’t know much about this program, ask someone who has used its services. They’ll tell you how important the Transportation program is and that it’s vital to continue to provide these services. Thanks to all the employees that have and are contributing to this wonderful cause. It is employees like YOU that make the difference. Another program coming on-line is our Guardian Angel Program designed to allow patients to recognize their caregivers for extraordinary service by making donations in their name. These and other future programs are just some of the ways your Foundation is working to ensure the strong and continued growth of our Hospital and its services. Be proud to be part of an organization that continues to give back even in the hardest of times.

The cost to attend is a $25 donation to the Heart-2-Heart fund. The luncheon will feature exciting entertainment, door prizes, wonderful silent auction items, a speaker from the One-on-One with a RN Cardiovascular Division at the Washington Unversity School of Medicine on heart-related issues and a delicious, catered heart-healthy lunch.

Director’s Message The 2009 “Route 66 Employee Giving Campaign” is a success! The PCRMC employee family donated more than $36,000 in less than 30 days to go toward the purchase of two new vans for the Patient Transportation Program. Support of the campaign, and the belief in the mission of Phelps County Regional Medical Center, goes a long way in helping improve the lives throughout our local communities. The Patient Transportation Program has just driven its millionth mile transporting over 250 patients each month. Patients are shuttled to and from radiation treatments, occupational and physical therapy, imaging and other medical services. All gifts are important to the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation. Each gift received directly impacts the quality of care that our community receives. Your gift enables PCRMC to utilize the best equipment, facilities, and medical services while providing quality healthcare. In an era of rising costs and diminishing reimbursements, making this commitment is a greater challenge than ever before. Board Member Profile Tina Pridgeon Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Secretary Tina Pridgeon was born and raised in Rolla, Missouri. In 1981 she began working for the Phelps County Health Department and Meramec Home Health. She traveled with her husband while he served two terms in the U.S. Air Force living in Illinois and Florida before returning to Rolla in 1992. She resumed her healthcare career with Meramec Home Health and later worked for Missouri Department of Health-Rolla Regional Center. In July of 2001, Tina joined Phelps County Regional Medical Center working in Organizational Development and in January of 2006 she became Director of Auxiliary and Volunteers Services. In addition to serving as Director of Auxiliary & Volunteer Services, Tina is also the Foundation Board Secretary and serves on the Senior Companion and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Boards. Currently, she is the Legislative Representative for the Midwest Association for Healthcare Volunteer Resource Professionals (MAHVRP) and also a member of South Central Missouri Nursing Coalition (SCMNC), Alpha Sigma Lambda, Sigma Beta Delta, and Beta Sigma Phi Sorority. Tina married her high school sweetheart, Tony, and they celebrate 28 years of marriage. Their son Garrett and wife Michele recently added the newest member to the Pridgeon family in February of 2009. Tina enjoys her new role as “Grammy” taking trips to Illinois to visit granddaughter Natalie.
Road Trip to $66,000

During the first day of PCRMC’s “Route 66 Employee Giving Campaign,” more than 100 employees donated to the campaign. The goal of the campaign, sponsored by the Foundation, is to raise $66,000 toward the purchase of two new vans for the hospital’s Patient Transportation Program. Since 1998, the Patient Transportation Program has provided free shuttle service to and from Phelps County Regional Medical Center and its physician clinics for patients who live within a 30-mile radius of the hospital. Patients have used the free service for a variety of reasons, including radiation oncology treatments, ambulatory surgery procedures, medical imaging appointments, outpatient rehabilitation services and other medical visits. “The Patient Transportation Program is a huge benefit to patients,” Lorrie Hartley, director of the Foundation, said. “Transportation is the last thing a patient should need to worry about – this program eases that stress and allows the patient to focus on their health.” The Patient Transportation Program is funded by PCRMC, the PCRMC Auxiliary, Missouri Department of Transportation grants and the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation. The fleet travels approximately 96,000 miles per year and is about to travel its millionth mile. Adding two new vehicles will enable the program to reach and serve additional patients in the service area of Phelps, Pulaski, Maries, Texas, Crawford, Dent and Gasconade counties. The public is also welcome to make a contribution to help support the Patient Transportation Program. I would like to express my gratitude to the Foundation for giving me the opportunity to give back to the Patient Transportation Program that has done so much for me and my grandmother. Several years ago due to unforeseen circumstances I was deemed my grandmother’s sole caretaker. She is an elderly woman with multiple health problems and with that means a lot of trips to the doctor’s office sometimes a couple appointments in one day not to mention off to the pharmacy or lab after that. Without this service I would have to leave work on numerous occasions to pick her up and take her to her appointments. Therefore it would be very difficult for me to juggle my job responsibilities and my family responsibilities.

Not only is this a wonderful service but the people who work in this department are wonderful as well. I can’t tell you how many times my grandmother has bragged on the level of service they provide. They are compassionate, caring, concerned and take great pride in the job that they do.

Breast Center Mammography Fund
Yearly screening mammograms are a crucial resource for detecting breast cancer and saving lives. There are more treatment options available to the patient when breast cancer is caught in an early stage. All women should have access to this potentially lifesaving test. The Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation has a special fund in place to provide free screenings to women who meet certain financial guidelines and who would otherwise not be able to afford the mammogram. One local woman is very grateful for the fund. Theresa Lewis is the mother of four teenagers, she has a job, and she’s a full-time student. She works as the student employee/ building monitor at Columbia College. She’s also a junior there, getting a second degree in Psychology and an Elementary Education Certification. Her husband Chris is an over-the-road truck driver. At the age of 34, Theresa found a lump in her right breast. She says it was painful and felt like a rope. “I went to the doctor, and he felt it was necessary to rush a mammogram,” Theresa says. “I’m a member of a women’s cancer support group, and they told me about the mammography fund. It was a relief to find out that I could have some help with it.” Theresa got in touch with Helen Litz, PCRMC’s Comprehensive Breast Center coordinator, and the two worked through the application process. “About an hour after my mammogram, they did an ultrasound, and then I had a biopsy performed,” Lewis says. “It came out clear; I got good news. The fund helped me with the expense of all the procedures – it was a huge relief.” Mammograms save lifes!
