Message from the President
In 2014, Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation made significant progress toward our goal of improving the health of those who live in the Phelps County Regional Medical Center’s service region. But 2014 was also something more. It was a year of celebration and transition, a year of progress and commitment. Most notably, it was a year when we celebrated the success of our $7 million fundraising campaign for the Delbert Day Cancer Institute. Dedicated to the community, healthcare professionals and, most importantly, cancer patients, the Institute is now under construction, following the April 20, 2015 groundbreaking. We thank the more than 1,500 donors who are making this possible. In addition to this major capital campaign, the Foundation staff and Board have continued to support efforts to improve the health of our community. Guided by our commitment to patient-centered, community-focused healthcare, we continue to work with clinicians, staff, patients, friends and donors to fund the greatest needs and opportunities. We have also worked to build our Board and strengthen our governance. In 2014, we welcomed 10 new board members, restructured our committees and added positions for key PCRMC leaders. These changes were implemented to help guide the Foundation’s growth, while fostering excellence and ensuring operational transparency. This annual giving report, in fact, is part of our commitment to sharing our Foundation’s good work, while also meeting our obligation for accountability to our friends and donors. We are committed to being responsible stewards of the investment so many have made in our healthcare community. On behalf of the Foundation’s leadership and staff, thank you for your support. We look forward to a future of working together to expand our region’s ability to deliver world-class healthcare that is focused on you, we and us. Sincerely,
PHELPS REGIONAL HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION
Message from the Executive Director Our donors support Phelps County Regional Medical Center for all kinds of reasons. Many wish to show their gratitude for exceptional care through a Guardian Angel gift. Some contribute in memory of a loved one who has passed away. Others simply believe strongly in the vital role our organization plays in the community. Whatever their motivation, the entire Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation family, together with the patients we serve, are grateful. These gifts provide the additional resources needed to complete capital projects, purchase equipment and create programs and services to meet the needs of those who rely on PCRMC for world-class healthcare close to home. The Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation also relies on the hardworking Foundation Board of Directors and staff to carry out our mission. Their time, energy and commitment to our region’s good health is also greatly appreciated. With sincere appreciation,

The tournament was presented by G2N and McCarthy Building Companies.

The $100,199 raised in 2014 – a record for the annual event – will benefit the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, which opens in Fall 2016 to provide residents with access to world-class cancer treatment close to home. Funds are raised primarily through donations and sponsorships by both local and out-of-town businesses. Major sponsors of the 2014 tournament included Murphy Company, Guarantee Electrical Co., Esterly, Schneider & Associates, Inc., MO-Sci Corporation and BSA LifeStructures. “It’s a great day for our donors, and an even a greater day for those who will benefit from the Delbert Day Cancer Institute’s services,” said Ted Day, 2014 Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Board Treasurer.

EMPLOYEES GIVE BACK 2014 Employee Giving Campaign Raises More Than $138,000 If you need proof of how much the employees of Phelps County Regional Medical Center care about our hospital and our community, you’ll find it in the record-setting results of the 2014 Employee Giving Campaign. This year, PCRMC employees donated $138,119 – 38 percent above their goal and more than they’ve ever raised in the annual campaign’s history, according to Lorrie Hartley, Executive Director. It all takes place during the month of October, when each PCRMC employee receives a packet, inviting them to participate. In 2014, 309 employees – or more than 17% – contributed though payroll deduction, or an annual or one-time pledge. More than $100,000 of the money raised was earmarked by donors for the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, with the remainder spread among the Foundation’s other funds. An end-of-the-campaign celebration held late last October included prize drawings for a television, a Kindle Fire and gift cards. “This campaign helps to educate hospital staff on the Foundation and how it supports both the hospital and the community,” said Executive Director Lorrie Hartley. “The funds that our generous employees contribute mean a lot.”

Major Gifts
The Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation raises much of its funds one dollar at a time. But we are also fortunate to have many people in our service area who wish to make a larger mark and are exceptionally generous with their donations. We are thankful for all the good work their major gifts allow us to accomplish.

SUCCESS! Delbert Day Cancer Institute Capital Campaign Reaches Its $7 Million Fundraising Goal When the leadership of PCRMC announced plans to construct a new state-of-the-art cancer institute on the hospital campus in 2013, it gave our Foundation an ambitious challenge. We were asked to rally the community support needed to raise $7 million of the Institute’s $40 million-plus price tag. The campaign took off with a gift from Ted and Kim Day in honor of Ted’s dad and groundbreaking cancer researcher, Dr. Delbert Day. And it took off from there, benefiting from hundreds of individual pledges, gifts, grants and fundraising events.
“We are extraordinarily grateful to the Day family for their leadership in making this

residents can receive world-class treatment here at home without the burden of traveling to multiple locations. Like Dr. Day himself, this institute represents all that is good in our community, especially our willingness to help each other during our times of need.” The Delbert Day Cancer Institute is scheduled to open by the end of 2016.
During his years in practice, Dr. Delbert Day developed selective internal radiation therapy, which is used to treat tumors inaccessible by surgery, while decreasing side effects and improving tumor targeting. He also co-invented TheraSphere, which is used at more than 100 sites to treat patients with inoperable liver cancer.

What The DDCI Means To Us
Today, PCRMC is only equipped to treat about 40 percent of the cancer patients in its service area. When complete, the Delbert Day Cancer Institute will enable the hospital to serve an additional 520 patients a year. Housed on the main campus in Rolla, the DDCI will include areas for radiation and medical oncology, laboratory and imaging services, an infusion room, physician offices and more. It is designed to ensure the best possible patient experience and to ease the travel burden that many of our residents face.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AGENCY GRANT $2.8 Million Grant Benefits The Delbert Day Cancer Institute A $2.8 million match-grant award was awarded to PCRMC in 2014 from the Economic Development Agency for public infrastructure improvements related to the construction of the Delbert Day Cancer Institute. The multi-year, phased infrastructure grant will allow PCRMC to add approximately 500 parking spaces and address other infrastructure needs, such as stormwater detention and public utility relocation. To secure this federal opportunity, PCRMC partnered with the City of Rolla and the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

By the time the evening was over, the 29th Annual Cancer Gala, co-chaired by Lonna Sowers and Dr. Janece Martin, had raised $129,997 for the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation. The Cancer Gala’s generous donation was then divided between the Delbert Day Cancer Institute and the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund, which provides financial assistance to patients undergoing cancer treatment. This was the fourth time in the past 29 years that our Foundation was the benefactor of this wonderful event.

What A Difference A Cupcake Makes! Brenna Heavin may only be 13 years old, but she has the fundamentals of fundraising down pat: create a great product for a great cause, and people will line up to buy them. And that’s exactly what the Rolla seventh-grader has done with Cupcakes for Cancer, a fundraiser she created that combines her love of baking with her desire to help others in need. Since 2011, Brenna has baked thousands of cupcakes, which she sells for $1 a piece during one week in July. Customers choose from several varieties – including chocolate, white, peanut butter and red velvet – when they place their orders in the weeks preceding delivery. In 2014, she raised more than $2,300 from her sale of 2,100 cupcakes, all of which she donated to the Joy of Caring Cancer Fund. The fund, which helps with expenses for local cancer patients in need, was originally started by Brenna’s aunt, Renee Joy Heavin, an Edgar Springs resident who battled breast cancer in the 1990s.

And it can all be traced back to a 47-year-old motorcycle-riding hospice patient named Aaron. In 2011, only a month before he died, Aaron served as honorary Master of Ceremonies for the first-ever Poker Run to benefit our Hospice Fund. His uncle and nephew returned the next three years to ride his bike in his honor, with his mother and other relatives following in their car. The 2014 event included 41 participants, all of whom made stops at nursing facilities in our region, where they drew a playing card for their respective poker hands. In addition to spreading cheer to nursing home residents and raising hospice awareness, the annual event raised $5,603 in 2014.

“I’m very thankful.” Multiple surgeries left Alberta Siebert feeling better – except for the substantial co-pays that came with each one. An additional bill for cardiac rehab, she said, was simply not an option. With support from the Heart-2-Heart fund, Alberta was able to get the rehab she needed. The exercise regimen, she said, helped to lower her blood pressure and increase her wellbeing. The monthly education classes gave her tips on healthy eating. And the socializing with other cardiac patients helped her know she was not alone. “I am very thankful,” she said. “Without Heart-2Heart’s help, I could not complete the program.”
A patient at the Bond Clinic was losing weight he didn’t need to lose. The reason: the dentures he wore were broken and chipped, which made eating difficult. His medical insurance didn’t cover dentures, and he couldn’t afford them on his fixed-income. When the people who manage the Joy of Caring Fund heard the patient’s story, they stepped in to help, purchasing him a new full set of dentures. The purchase changed his life, he said. He began eating and gaining weight. His mood and demeanor improved. He was grateful for the gift and thankful for the donors who made it possible.

BETTER COMMUNICATION = HAPPIER PATIENTS Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund Patient communication at PCRMC took a step forward in 2014 when, thanks to $23,500 from the Enhancing Nursing Excellence Fund, new communication boards were purchased and installed in all patient rooms. The new, specially-designed dry-erase boards allow caregivers to post helpful information for and about their patients. This includes everything from meal times and physician visits, to tests and medication schedules. The boards also provide bedside reminders about special patient needs and other information that supports safe and effective patient care.

PHELPS REGIONAL HEALTH CARE FOUNDATION
Message from the Treasurer The past year has been one of financial growth and support for the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation. As the Board Treasurer, I want to thank you for your generosity and choosing us as your “charity of choice.” The Foundation, along with Phelps County Regional Medical Center, is committed to ensuring your investment is directed to initiatives that support excellence and improve patient care, including technology and research, capital campaign funds for the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, healthcare for some of the most vulnerable members of our community, wellness services, transportation and much more. Good things happen, thanks to you! An organization must be accountable and transparent, and ensuring donor and community trust is a top priority for the Foundation. At the Annual Board of Directors meeting each year, the Foundation’s IRS Form 990 is reviewed and explained by PCRMC’s Chief Financial Officer. Prepared by BKD and CliftonLarsonAllen, which also prepares the annual audit of the hospital and Foundation, Form 990 is required for all tax-exempt organizations. The Foundation is designated by the IRS as a 501(c)3 and a 509(a)3. The Foundation is a supporting organization strictly for PCRMC, and the Foundation Board reports to the PCRMC Board of Trustees. The Foundation raises money for initiatives that have been directed from PCRMC – ensuring that we are focused on the highest priority to meet the community’s healthcare needs. Your donation matters. Every $1 you donate is equal to PCRMC billing $144. With today’s economy, 144% is a great return on investment. Thank you for you continued generosity. Sincerely,

The incredible support from our philanthropic partners—our region’s businesses, private donors and charitable organizations—has helped our Foundation grow and better assist Phelps County Regional Medical Center in meeting the needs of our population. But we still have a long way to go and appreciate your continued support as we work to make world-class healthcare possible right here in our backyard. Thank you for being here for US. Whether YOU come to us for pediatrics, cancer treatment, hospice care or other needs, WE will be here to support you. As we look to the future, we know exciting, bold things are possible with your continued partnership. Thank you.
