A Season of Giving Thanks s we transition into the holiday season, we have so much to be thankful for. I know when I say “thank you” to you, our donors; I also speak on behalf of the Hospital Board of Trustees and Hospital Leadership. Without your support, and belief in the mission of Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC), we would not be able to transform the way our friends, neighbors and family members access health care in our community. As you know, we are scheduled to open the doors to the Delbert Day Cancer Institute in January of 2017. This state-of-the-art and patient-centered building is the result of many years of planning. PCRMC has officially received the keys to the building, and our staff is working diligently to ensure the building is patient-ready in just a few short months. Simply put, the Delbert Day Cancer Institute could not have been a reality, without your continued support. To celebrate you, and your philanthropic support, the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation (Hospital Foundation) hosted a special night of appreciation on October 13th at the Delbert Day Cancer Institute. This special night of celebration gave donors of the Delbert Day Cancer Institute a never-before seen “sneak – peek” into the building, complete with guided tours from clinicians. Event attendees also listened to presentations from Dr. Delbert Day himself, Hospital Foundation Board President Ted Day, PCRMC Director of Radiation Oncology and Hospital Foundation Board Member Dr. Christoper Spencer, and Hospital Foundation Board Member & cancer survivor Cindy Beger, as well as myself. As we look forward, we here at PCRMC have much to be thankful for. We are thankful for our employees, our community support and our family & friends. hen the opportunity came about to name the Phelps County Regional Medical Center (PCRMC) Delbert Day Cancer Institute after Ted Day’s father, it became apparent to Ted and his wife, Kim, that if the center would be associated with cancer, “then the name should be associated with Dad,” Ted says.
Delbert Day’s research and development of special purpose glass microspheres called TheraSphereTM, which are now being used worldwide to treat patients with inoperable liver cancer, have impacted thousands of lives, according to Ted. When discussions of starting a cancer institute began, Ted and Kim said they didn’t know anyone personally impacted by cancer. However, Ted says, “It became obvious that we had an opportunity to create something beneficial to the community.” The seed gift that Ted and Kim donated to create the Delbert Day Cancer Institute was the largest gift that the couple has ever made to an organization. However, for Ted, it’s not about the notoriety or recognition. “It’s the feeling we get when things happen.”
When the Delbert Day Cancer Institute opens in 2017, placing all cancer care services under one roof, Ted says cancer patients and their families will have access to a level of medical care that they wouldn’t otherwise have unless they travel about 100 miles in any direction.
Surprised, overwhelmed and delighted are some of the reactions Delbert says he had when he found out about the cancer institute in his namesake. “It was the most meaningful event in my life in more than one way,” Delbert says, noting that he appreciated that his son and daughter-in-law even considered naming the cancer institute after him. It was the fact that the recognition came from his family that was most meaningful to Delbert.
The community support behind the project, especially those who helped with a community campaign organized by the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation to raise $7 million for the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, also meant a lot to Delbert. “Its immediate effect is the expansion of health care to citizens to serve a community in a way that it hasn’t been doing previously,” Delbert says. “The fuse has been lit. This is the largest thing that will affect the hospital in the next 50 years,” Delbert says.
Philanthropy Before letting Delbert know about the cancer institute, Ted and Kim talked to Delbert’s wife, Shirley Day, who passed away in 2014, because she knew Delbert best. “Mom was the most philanthropic person I knew,” Ted says of Shirley. However, even if Delbert didn’t want his name on the cancer institute, Ted says he wouldn’t have altered the seed gift. While Ted says he knew the dictionary definition of the word, philanthropy, “I didn’t know what it felt like.”
When asked why he gives, Ted says, “It makes us feels good — the things we do to help people and benefit those who need help.” “We have a supportive family, a great work family and a strong church family. We are very blessed and want to set a good example. I hope people follow our example,” Kim says. Integrity, trust and relationships are the most important values to the Day family. Ted says while some people may see wiping out every need a community has as a good thing, he disagrees. “Once there’s no need, where will the driving or motivating factor to help go?” Ted says. Teaching the Next Generation Ted says he wants to teach the next generation what it’s like for an organization to have the resources to do good. Without that teaching, the next generation may not feel the same about helping mankind. Delbert echoed that sentiment, saying he takes great pride in seeing the success of his children.
Ted’s love of giving has been passed on to his son, Bret Day. Bret says he always knew how meaningful his grandfather’s life has been, but he now realizes how many people look up to him and understands the magnitude of the impact Delbert has had.

The Delbert Day Cancer Institute is important to Bret because it provides a need for people in the community. One day in the future, Bret and his wife, Christine, and their son, Chase, now 3 years old, and their soon-to-be daughter will drive by the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, and their children will recognize their last name on the building. Bret says he will tell his children what a special and brilliant guy their great-grandfather is and how he conducted some of the most groundbreaking research that had a great influence and saved many lives. While Delbert’s name will be on a building, more importantly, Delbert is their great-grandfather, and that will be the thing they will remember the most, Bret says.
Community Impact The Delbert Day Cancer Institute is going to transform this community, and in many ways, it already has. For instance, the Delbert Day Cancer Institute and Missouri University of Science and Technology are

partnering together for biomedical research. There’s other active research happening between the university and PCRMC, as well.
In 2015, PCRMC and Missouri S&T signed a memorandum of understanding that will help both institutions increase research collaboration and educational exchange. “There’s always been a respect between the university and hospital, and now they’re aligned toward a common goal,” Ted says. Pre-Grand Opening and Donor Appreciation Event

nearly 500 of the Hospital Foundation’s closest friends, donors and supporters were invited to attend the Delbert Day Cancer Institute Pre-Grand Opening and Donor Appreciation Event.

This special night of celebration gave supporters of the Hospital Foundation the first “sneak peek” look into the state-of-the-art Delbert Day Cancer Institute. The night started with words of thanks, encouragement and hope from Hospital Foundation Board President Ted Day, PCRMC CEO Edward Clayton, Dr. Delbert Day, PCRMC Director of Radiation Oncology and Hospital Foundation Board Member Dr. Christopher Spencer, Hospital Foundation Board Member & cancer survivor Cindy Beger and emcee Steven Lynch. Immediately following, groups of 15-25 attendees were guided through the Delbert Day Cancer Institute, stopping by six different stations. Each of the six stations covered a different area within the building, which highlighted the ways in which PCRMC will better be able to serve its patients.

Even though the building was still under construction, attendees were introduced to cutting-edge technology, such as the Varian TruBeam System which will provide streamlined imaging for more rapid diagnosis. Cancer survivor and Hospital Foundation Board Member Cindy Beger was one of the featured speakers of the evening.
At each station, attendees listened to a 3-5 minute presentation from an area expert. These experts were clinicians and will be working in the Delbert Day Cancer Institute in January 2017. After attendees visited each station, they were then ushered back into the event tent where they enjoyed heavy hors d'oeuvres, refreshments and entertainment by local band Trilogy. Attendees left with a greater sense of how their support is coming to fruition, as the Delbert Day Cancer Institute is in its final stages of construction. On behalf of the Hospital Foundation, thank you to those who were able to join us for such a special night of celebration. A special thanks to St. James Winery and Public House Brewing Company for providing the refreshments for the evening. In addition, we extend our sincere thanks to the event planning committee and volunteers for their time and efforts.

We’re All In
PCRMC Employees Display Their Unwavering Support Results from the 2016 Employee Giving Campaign Every day the employees of Phelps County Regional Medical Center give their time and talent. In the month of October, in addition, they pledge their support of the Hospital Foundation by giving through the annual employee giving campaign. The campaign theme for 2016 highlighted that as employees, “We’re All In” when it comes to providing world-class health care in our community. Employees were challenged to give to the fund of their choice. Employees could participate by giving one time gifts, or by establishing a pledge to be paid via payroll deduct over the next year. It is apparent that philanthropy lives in the walls of PCRMC. Between October 3rd and
October 31st more than 370 employees pledged their support of the 2016 campaign, by giving gifts totaling a staggering $118,709.
On behalf of the Hospital Foundation, we thank all of the employee donors of the 2016 campaign.
Ice Cream Social held to thank employee donors To celebrate the end of the 2016 Employee Giving Campaign, Hospital Foundation Board Members and Staff hosted an Ice Cream Social & Thank You Celebration on October 28th from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. for all donors of the 2016 Employee Giving Campaign. Employees were invited to the private dining rooms at PCRMC, where they could build their own ice cream sundae. It was a perfect way to “top off” a successful campaign and even better way to end a workweek. Who are they, and what is their role? The Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation has 13 supported funds. The Hospital Foundation acts as the conduit for charitable donations made to Phelps County Regional Medical Center. Each fund exists to assist patients with a variety of different needs that may arise during the course of their treatment. This can include: transportation to and from their appointments (free of charge),
