Guardian Angel Recognizes the Medical Oncology Team

The nursing staff on the Medical Oncology Unit were recently honored as a team of “Guardian Angels” through the Phelps Regional Healthcare Foundation’s new Guardian Angel program.

The program allows for a patient or patient’s family to make a donation to the foundation in gratitude for exceptional care. The caregiver, or team of caregivers, is then recognized with a special pin that can be worn on the employee badge. The pin has the hospital’s signature “P” enclosed with a set of wings. A patient chose to recognize the entire nursing staff of Medical Oncology for “great care” with a donation to the foundation. Employees who have been recognized 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 times will receive a special designation to add to the pin. The program is being piloted for inpatient units on Medical Oncology. Lorrie Hartley, Director of the Foundation, said the program will soon be piloted for outpatient units in Radiation Oncology. Hartley expects the program will spread to the rest of PCRMC in the near future. For more information about the Guardian Angel program, please contact the Foundation at (573) 458-7946.

President’s Message

On the Move

Your Foundation is “On the Move.” The Foundation Board’s main focus this year is on structuring our organization for success. In reviewing how the Foundation is structured and how the Board functions, we’ve decided on some strategic changes. First and foremost, our purpose is to support the mission critical needs of our fabulous hospital. The Foundation is aligning itself with other organizations that support the hospital, like the Hospital Auxiliary. By aligning our efforts, we hope to not duplicate our efforts, but work to efficiently support the worthy causes of Phelps County Regional Medical Center.

The Foundation Board has initiated a proactive approach and is much more engaged in the needs of the Foundation than in the past. Current programs, such as our very successful golf tournament, featured in this newsletter, will continue. New ideas such as the Guardian Angel and Grateful Patient programs will be launched to create “awareness” of the Foundation and its goals. It will take all our efforts to make this the success that we know it can be. Please feel free to contact Lorrie Hartley, our Executive Director or any of the Board members for ways to be involved and participate in your Health Care Foundation. Fund Focus Joy of Caring

A new giving opportu nity that benefits everyone!

Renee Joy Heavin, a wife and mother of two daughters, was living the American dream. Pursuing personal and community interests, the Edgar Springs resident had a busy lifestyle. But in May 1992, disaster struck the Heavin family – Joy was diagnosed with breast cancer and her husband lost his job of 21 years due to a plant closing. Joy and her family were consumed with worries and stress of how to pay the medical, household and family expenses. Because of her family’s experience, Joy envisioned a resource that would reduce the financial and emotional distress of cancer patients receiving treatments. In 1995, her vision became a reality when she was hired by the Bond Clinic as their first cancer care coordinator. Joy, and the Bond Clinic, created the Joy of Caring Foundation and designated that all monies in the Fund would go directly to cancer patients. Sadly in October of 1996, Joy lost her battle with cancer. But her mission lives on in all the cancer patients who benefit from her hard work and dedication. The Joy of Caring Foundation was transferred to the care of the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation and renamed the Joy of Caring Fund.

Joy of Caring Fund Mission Statement

We will assist any need that impedes the cancer patient’s ability to participate in their activities of daily living.

Along with my family, the Joy of Caring Fund is an accomplishment I am most proud of. - Joy Heavin

Acute RehabCare Center Named for Benefactor When the Phelps Regional Healthcare Foundation received a $525,000 check from the estate of Mildred Rauth, it came as a much-welcomed surprise. Mildred Rauth, born October 16, 1896 in Freeburg, Illinois, was a businesswoman and pioneer of her time. After learning the movie theater industry in Illinois, she moved to Rolla and built the Rolla Ritz Theater with her business partner, Edward Hardebeck. The Ritz opened in 1941. “They built the Ritz from the ground up,” Elizabeth Hardebeck, Edward’s daughter, says. “She earned her fortune with dimes, nickels and quarters from the movie theater.” According to issues of Box Office magazine, published in the 1940s, Rauth also owned theaters in Crocker, Dixon, Leadwood, Newburg and Cabool. Rauth kept her theaters up-to-date with extra amenities like air-conditioning. Hardebeck says Rauth chose the Rolla area because of its proximity to Fort Leonard Wood.

Rauth has served 15,600 lunches to soldiers.” By the 1960’s, Rauth had sold the Ritz, as well as her other theaters. She and Edward Hardebeck opened Gambles Store on Pine Street and sold appliances and furniture. She later moved on to open Rolla’s first water softening business. Rauth passed away on June 9, 1974. She named Phelps County Regional Medical Center to receive the remainder of her estate after providing for her nieces until their death. Lawyers for Rauth’s estate recently contacted the Phelps Regional Healthcare Foundation about the donation. In honor of Rauth, the new Acute RehabCare Center at PCRMC, which opened in May of 2008, has been named after her. About the Phelps Regional Healthcare Foundation

“The Ritz catered to the soldiers,” Hardebeck says. “Another big draw was the air-conditioning. Most of the other theaters at the time just offered ‘air-circulation’ or ceiling fans.”

The Foundation is a 501(c)3 not-for profit corporation. Its mission is to serve as the philanthropic organization that facilitates charitable donations to support and assist the mission of Phelps County Regional Medical Center in providing for the health care needs of the communities it serves.

Rauth was glad to have the soldiers and her business, and they were glad to have her. An article published on August 14, 1943, in the Box Office details a special tribute the soldiers paid to Rauth:

Every time you make a donation to the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation, you are making a donation to support the many needs of the people in your community.

“Hundreds of soldiers who visited the Rolla USO on Saturday recently paid tribute to Miss Mildred Rauth, proprietor of the local Ritz Theater, on the occasion of the the anniversary of the Ritz Theater’s Stage Door Canteen Services inaugurated one year ago. Pvt. Charles Maino and Cpl. Robert Adis on behalf of the soldiers, presented Miss Rauth with a spray of deep red gladioli. The Ritz Stage Door Canteen Service is made possible by the generosity of Miss Rauth, who each Sunday personally serves and pays for a complimentary luncheon to every soldier attending the Rolla USO. During this period, Miss

leave a lasting legacy

A piece of donated land, a dream and 78 people wanting to make a difference – this was the humble beginning of a momentous relationship. In the Uptown Theater on February 17, 1950, the PCRMC Auxiliary was organized and thirteen months later the hospital opened its doors. The Auxiliary hasn’t slowed down since. Starting from a simple cart carrying toiletries and books for patients, the Auxiliary has donated more than a million dollars in time and funds to benefit PCRMC and our communities. These funds are used to provide nursing and allied-health career scholarships, and to furnish PCRMC with major medical equipment, transportation services, and other projects that benefit PCRMC. Today, 157 active members slip on the green vest that has became synonymous with a friendly face and a helping hand. They work in 35 different service areas within the hospital and in 2008 alone, contributed more than 30,000 hours of service. Since 1986, the Auxiliary has been awarded the “Auxiliary of the Year” seven times by the Missouri Hospital Association. In 2008, the Auxiliary became the first members of the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation’s Million Dollar Club for their investment to PCRMC. The Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation and PCRMC thank the Auxiliary for their commitment, time and resources to our hospital and communities.
