PCRMC Patient Transportation offers Hope, Help and Access to people like Chuck Boland and many others in need of transportation to and from the hospital and its medical clinics for patients who live within a 30-mile radius. We are wrapping up our campagin to raise $66,000 in donations to purchase two new vehicles, which will replace one worn-out van and enable the program to reach out to serve additional patients in Phelps, Pulaski, Maries, Texas, Crawford and Dent counties.

“I am Traci Bolard and my husband Chuck is a 43 year-old retired Navy Veteran and was diagnosed with a meningioma brain tumor in 2002. Since then he has had four brain surgeries and two kinds of radiation. After his fourth brain surgery in January two thousand and nine at Barnes Hosptial in St. Louis, he was left unable to sit up unsupported, lost partial use of his left arm and was unable to walk. He spent four months in inpatient rehabilitation in St. Louis before coming home. Once at home, we traveled five days a week to Phelps County Regional Medical Center for speech, occupational, and physical therapies. Now we travel from Waynesville 3 days a week for therapy .
It’s been six months since Chuck has been home and he is progressing well in therapy. I can not tell you how much we appreciate the transportation Our employees have enthusiastically service. The guys that drive the van are so timely and friendly. On days that supported this fundraising effort. During I have a doctor appointment or cannot drive him for some other reason, it the first thirty days of the hospital’s is absolutely priceless to be able to have someone come and pick Chuck up “Route 66 Employee Giving Campaign,” and take him back and forth to rehabilitation. The needs of disabled people more than 260 staff members made are very demanding for family members and this service is a true blessing donations totaling $36,000! to our lives.” Foundation Board President, Ted Day, and his wife, Kim, have offered us a challenge grant of $14,000 to encourage other community members to give. So your gift will count double if you mail it by December 31.

President’s Message The “PCRMC Experience”
It makes me very proud to be associated with an organization that strives for excellence in everything it does. I’ve been associated with PCRMC since 1977 when I worked in the lab with Mille Cole and did everything she taught me. When I rejoined the PCRMC team in 1990 as a part-time pharmacist, many things had changed, some for the better, some for the worse. During the 1990’s one of our constant struggles was ensuring a good experience during your hospital stay. As part of the management team back then I thought we did a good job. When I look at how patients are treated and their “experience” today. I can truly say we’ve come a long way. I’m proud of the Foundation’s efforts to help PCRMC achieve a better hospital experience and possibly better outcomes. We’ve truly come a long way from the 1970’s, but I would challenge each and every one of us to make our patient’s stay one that they believe is the best that they can have. What does it take for us to provide a positive long lasting impression with our customer’s? It’s knowing what each of our responsibilities are to our customers. Help us to better our own service back to our customers and patients so that next time they’re telling someone about their stay they tell of the “PCRMC Experience.” Sincerely,

Foundation Fun Facts
•The Smile Mobile has provided free dental care to over 6,000 children. •Phelps Regional Hospice serves seven counties within approximately a 40-mile radius of Rolla. •One in eight women will develop breast cancer at some time during her life. Fewer than 50 percent of women in this area get an annual mammogram, their best defense against breast cancer. •The Joy of Caring Fund provides financial assistance to patients who are currently undergoing cancer treatment and are having difficulty maintaining their activities of daily living. •Since its inception, the Joy of Caring Fund has assisted patients in the following areas: prescription medications, food supplements, wigs, mastectomy bras, heating/cooling repairs and travel expenses. •The PCRMC Auxiliary has donated over $1M dollars to the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation. •The Heart-2-Heart fund raised more that $29,000 last year to bring heart healthy programs to the women of PCRMC communities. •The Grateful Patient Program provides a philanthropic opportunity for current and former patients to show appreciation and gratitude for excellent services received at PCRMC and affiliates. •You can become a Friend of the Foundation with a cumulative lifetime gift of $1,000. When a Friend is hospitalized, he/she will receive a courtesy kit, flowers and a personal visit by Foundation staff.
Director’s Message It is a distinctive and defining time for Phelps County Regional Medical Center and our Foundation. As so many of us wrestle with the challenges of an uncertain economy, tough choices are inevitable when it comes to charitable giving. History has shown that in challenging times, Americans embrace the value of giving in unique ways. Each person will thoughtfully determine to support organizations that represent important priorities within their communities, while providing the greatest opportunity for their contributions to touch the most lives. In 2009, I am pleased to report that our donor contributions are steadily increasing in spite of hard economic times. The Phelps Regional Healthcare Foundation is actively focused on our annual funds. One funding goal in particular is the Patient Transportation Fund. There has been a tangible goal set of $66,000 to purchase two new Patient Transportation Vans. To date, we have raised over $36,000 and MoSci Corporation has issued a challenge grant of $14,000 bringing the grand total to $50,000. We need an additional $16,000 to reach our goal of $66,000. The year-end appeal will be focused on accomplishing this goal to purchase the two new vans. The beginnings of Phelps County Regional Medical Center are rooted in volunteerism and philanthropy, and that still holds true today. Despite unstable economic times, our team members, physicians, neighbors and friends have given generously over the past year. This Foundation will continue to ensure that your gifts today, and in the future, will meaningfully support our mission of making Phelps County Regional Medical Center the employer and hospital of choice for this entire region.
Lorrie Hartley
Board Member Profile JoAnn Brand-Hoertel has approximately 40 years of experience in health care – she’s worked as a director and administrator of nursing homes and as a director of nursing in several hospitals, including Phelps County Regional Medical Center. For the past five years, JoAnn has served as a board member on the PCRMC Board of Trustees and has been a member of the Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Board since it was founded. She also is a 10 year member and volunteer on the Phelps County Fair Board. “I’m very active as a hospital board member,” she says. “Because I’m a nurse, I look into patient care more than others might. I enjoy visiting patients and talking with them about our hospital. I like to gather feedback and promote PCRMC – I truly believe that this hospital is a pearl.” JoAnn and her husband Bill have eight children, 18 grandchildren and a basset hound named Clara. She raises Scottish Highland Cattle, goats and horses on her farm with her daughter’s family. JoAnn loves to travel, and she shares that love with her grandchildren. When each grandchild reaches a set age, JoAnn takes them on a special trip. Her other hobbies are reading and playing bridge.

January 2010 • Hospital Launch The Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation will implement the Guardian Angel Program hospital wide at the start of the New Year. The Guardian Angel Program provides a philanthropic opportunity for grateful patients and their loved ones to recognize a special caregiver who they believe made a difference during their stay at PCRMC. By making a contribution on behalf of your special caregiver, you will honor someone who has touched your life in an extraordinary way. Your contribution will enable us to enhance the quality of patient care, and quality of life, of individuals in PCRMC communities.
Donor Spotlight BLancHe Gray A longtime volunteer and generous supporter of Phelps County Regional Medical Center, Blanche Gray has made an investment in the future PCRMC by making a planned gift. Blanche feels strongly about supporting PCRMC through annual contributions, as well as leaving a legacy that will live on forever. “I have witnessed the phenomenal growth and visionary leadership at Phelps County Regional Medical Center over the years. This inspires me to give, if I can help somebody, I will. No matter how bad things are for you, you want others to have it better. I am very fortunate and I want to pass that on, the hospital is a worthwhile cause and it is very important to the community.”

Free Heart-2-Heart Screenings in 2009. The total cost of the screenings and the educational materials were an estimated at $12,597.
The screenings included the following: • A peripheral or carotid artery screening • Blood lipid profile • Height and weight check • Body Mass Index (BMI) • Body fat percentage • Blood pressure & blood pressure risk indicator • Heart disease and stroke educational materials.
Blanche’s Favorite Christmas Dessert
PumPkin Pie • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese , softened • 2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed • 1 cup sugar • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten • 1 cup half-and-half • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional • 1 piece pre-made pie dough • Whipped cream, for topping
Directions Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Place 1 piece of pre-made pie dough down into a (9-inch) pie pan and press down along the bottom and all sides. Pinch and crimp the edges together to make a pretty pattern. Put the pie shell back into the freezer for 1 hour to firm up. Fit a piece of aluminum foil to cover the inside of the shell completely. Fill the shell up to the edges with pie weights or dried beans (about 2 pounds) and place it in the oven. Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil and pie weights and bake for another 10 minutes or until the crust is dried out and beginning to color. For the filling, in a large mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese with a hand mixer. Add the pumpkin and beat until combined. Add the sugar and salt, and beat until combined. Add the eggs mixed with the yolks, half-and-half, and melted butter, and beat until combined. Finally, add the vanilla, cinnamon, and ginger, if using, and beat until incorporated. Pour the filling into the warm prepared pie crust and bake for 50 minutes, or until the center is set. Place the pie on a wire rack and cool to room temperature. Cut into slices and top each piece with a generous amount of whipped cream

Diva’s Full Service Salon donated a host of pink goodies and beauty products to Scooter’s Coffeehouse for a Breast Cancer Awareness raffle during October. Scooter’s, located in PCRMC’s Medical Office Building, held a drawing every Friday of October. The prizes were as follows: a haircut and style, an OPI nail polish kit, a bottle of HEMPZ herbal moisturizer, and the grand prize – a pink CHI gift set, complete with a hair dryer, a straightening iron, a mini iron, a diffuser and shine serum. Mary Redshaw, ambulatory surgery, was the lucky winner for the grand prize. The raffle raised $376 for Phelps Regional Health Care’s Mammography Fund, which provides mammograms to local women in need. Diva’s Salon is located at 1025 Kingshighway, and staffed by Rita Mace, Tina Kamper and Kristy Veatch. A big thank you to everyone for their support! Molly, Annette, Megan, Jamie from MS&T held a bake sale at the Havener Atrium on October 31, 2009 to support PCRMC’s Breast Center Mammography Fund. The college students raised over $60 to support area women in need of a mammogram.

October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Foundation held its third annual “Pink Bag” event to raise support for the PCRMC Breast Center Mammography Fund. Pink Gift Bags were filled with Pink Lemonade, hand sanitizer, lotion, lip balm, tissues, calculators, and raised $2,860 for the fund.
Panera Pink Bagel Panera Bread Raises Funds for Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Breast Center Mammography Fund ROLLA, MO. — In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Panera Bread of Rolla raised $785.50 for Phelps Regional Health Care Foundation Breast Center Mammography Fund through the sale of their signature Pink Ribbon Bagel. Twenty-five cents from each Pink Ribbon Bagel sold in October was donated to the Mammography Fund to financially assist women, who meet the established income guidelines, to receive a free mammogram at Phelps County Regional Medical Center.
