News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 3, 2021 Summer camp financial assistance program Kids Need to Play! announced
Pierce County Parks has created a program named Kids Need to Play! (KNP!) funded through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) federal funding allocations to provide discounts for kids’ summer camps and programs. Several public and private recreation providers are collaborating on the initiative to bring kids accessible opportunities to learn, create, explore and compete. While remaining safety-conscious, many camps and programs for preschool (ages 3-4) and school-age (ages 5-18) kids will be deeply discounted at 60-90% off for all youth this summer across Pierce County. The discount will be automatically applied at time of registration. Participating camps will include the Kids Need to Play! symbol. Lakewood Parks, Metro Parks Tacoma, Pen Met Parks, Puyallup Parks and the Town of Steilacoom have partnered with Pierce County Parks to offer this opportunity. Participant discounts will not affect the quality, allotted time or format of programming offerings. Camp providers will still receive the revenue they require to produce safe, high-quality camps through ARPA resources. The goal of this program is to ensure that kids can return to camp this summer and benefit from the enrichment of camp activities and safe social interactions. For this reason, discounts are going directly to the families at the time of registration with no wait, coupon or reimbursement needed. If a family has already registered for a camp that is participating in the KNP! program, they can request a refund and re-enrollment by June 28 to take advantage of the discounted price. Over 15,000 youth are expected to benefit from $1.5 million in funding available this summer. There is no limit to the number of KNP! camps or experiences a family can sign up for from June 28–Sept. 3 in Pierce County. However, each camp is subject to the capacity specified by the camp provider. For more information on the Kids Need to Play! promotion, visit www.piercecountywa.gov/play. Families inquiring about participation may contact Pierce County Parks and Recreation representative Emily Smith at 253-798-4199. 2

Walk. Bike. Stroll. Roll. Whatever your preferred activity, Pierce County trails offer opportunities at a time when people are clamoring to safely get outside. Whether it’s a quiet escape to the woods, a biking or walking connection to a neighborhood school, or an accessible way to get some exercise, our local trails are here for us now, and into the future.
a 57% increase in trail use from 2019 to 2020 which amounts to over 1.6 million additional visits. And this trend continues into 2021 where, despite a record setting January rain event, the Foothills Trail still saw double the traffic at almost every trailhead. The message is clear: even a little rain won’t stop Pierce County residents from getting out on the trail.
Over a year ago, we collectively took an unexpected break from our “normal life” and began the process of adjusting to new rules for social distancing, masking, and engaging with our communities. For many, that meant leaning into teleworking with our new canine coworker or balancing zoom school with zoom work, and after all that screen time, we needed the outdoors more than ever. Pierce County data shows
This trend continued at the national level. Americans have flocked to outdoor recreation in record numbers amid COVID restrictions. According to an Outdoor Industry article1, more Americans took up running, cycling and hiking for the first-time last year. Urban residents, seeking a respite from the stresses and close quarters of towns and cities, took up these activities in even higher numbers than the general population. 10

S R A O S Y T I AR As we look at a post-COVID future, it’s easy to see that already popular trails will remain an important outlet both for both veteran users and people just discovering their favorites. So how do we plan for that future? Fortunately, Pierce County has a vision for a robust trail system that will continue to build diverse trail opportunities, with more local and regional connections, and accessibility.
•
In communities across the County, Pierce County Parks is planning and implementing near, mid, and long-term trail projects that will continue to meet the need of a growing trail community. By building new connections and improving the beloved, Pierce County will continue to provide residents access to trails now and into the future.
Pierce County Regional Trails Plan Vision: • • • • •
An accessible and seamless trail network used by people of all ages and abilities. Practical transportation options. Opportunities to connect with nature. Links to parks, open spaces, signifi- cant environmental features, public facilities, and areas of interest. Diverse trail opportunities and experiences including non-motorized transportation, recreation, fitness, connecting with nature, and organized events and races.

Getting out on your local trails can be an important way to improve your mental and physical health. During this time, and always, safety is the number one priority. Bresemann Forest trail system receives a makeover!
Bresemann Forest Trail
In order to make trails through Bresemann safer and more welcoming, Washington Conservation Corps and Washington Service Corps members, led by Parks Specialist Ben Monte Calvo, employed the principles of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED). You will notice new wayfinding signage, less underbrush, and longer, straighter sightlines as you wander the forest paths. Ben Monte Calvo shared another important CPTED principle, “One of the major safety enhancements that comes from this large-scale trail maintenance is that these areas start to feel loved and cared for. The more people feel that a trail system is taken care of, the more they feel safe while visiting.” Don’t be afraid to check out Bresemann! And when you do, please remember the important safety tips in the Trails Safety Video below. ~ Cindy Haverkamp, Pierce County Parks Planner

Without planning, where would we be? We wouldn’t have cities, parks or even public transportation! The portion of the Pipeline Trail within the City of Tacoma was completed in 2020, running from downtown Tacoma to 72nd & Waller. Orangegate Park, approximately 150 acres in the Summit-Waller community, will be improved in approximately 2023-24. The park will include improvements to the primitive trail system for walkers, cyclists, and horses, a play area, dog park, and a trailhead for the Pipeline Trail. East Puyallup Trailhead 2022 Improvements
Parkland Community Trail Gears up for Construction
With so many more people using trails, we need to grow our trailhead infrastructure to accommodate new users. In 2005, the McMillan to Meeker section of the Foothills trail was constructed. Part of this project included the East Puyallup Trailhead, which currently contains 26 parking stalls, an information kiosk and restroom. Since then, Parks has acquired more property with the goal of expanding the trailhead. A Conceptual Design was created in 2018 and funding has now been allocated to make this project a reality! Construction is planned to be complete in late 2022 for the following improvements:
The Parkland Community Trail, which will connect Parkland neighborhoods to five schools, three Pierce County Parks, and Pacific Lutheran University has moved out of Final Design and will be ready for permits later this year. Construction is expected to begin in Spring of 2022. This multi-use linear park will provide a safe route for people of all ages and abilities to get around in an area that currently has few sidewalks or bike lanes.
• • •
The Parkland Community Trail will lead to Sprinker Recreation Center, which is also scheduled for improvement in 2022. Sprinker’s outdoor improvements will include a regional spray park, Futsal court, new playground and open lawns and picnic shelters, providing a great place to rest after enjoying the sights along the trail!
Over 44 new parking stalls to include additional ADA accessible stalls and electric vehicle charging stations. New landscaping and buffer plantings between the parking lot and adjacent homes. A paved connection between the trailhead plaza and 80th St. frontage. 18

Using Mobile Technology to Engage Children with Nature A study published in the academic journal Environment and behavior suggests technology can be used to promote engagement with nature and increase children’s enjoyment when experiencing local parks and surroundings. Children in all three groups covered by the study experienced positive effects from the use of place-based education to connect them to the local environment.
