Argyle v Crawley Wasps. January 12, 2020
WELCOME WORDS GOOD afternoon and welcome to all our supporters and the players, management and supporters of Crawley Wasps to Manadon Sports and Community Hub. Playing at Manadon this season has been a rare occurrence, with the last time being September 15 against Yeovil. It is lovely to be back in our familiar surroundings and I sure today’s game will be one of the toughest challenges of late. As a team, we have not been firing on all cylinders and today’s game will surely test us as both teams will be fighting hard to claim all three points.
I would like to take you back to August 15, 2019 - our first game of the season. It does not seem that long ago when we made the overnight trip to Crawley. Five months later and with the season entering its second half, the table looks very competitive.
One thing I have noticed since we have been a part of National Premier League South is that there are no easy games. There are many teams that not only can challenge for the title but also have a say in who wins it. We have had many challenging games in Oxford, Yeovil, Watford, Cardiff and Crawley, to name but a few. As a player and as a manager, you want to challenge yourself to be the best and there is only one way to do that - put yourself in the most challenging situations and come out of your comfort zone. Argyle Ladies are most certainly enjoying the challenge of applying their trade in the third tier of the women’s national game. I believe Plymouth, as a city, is proud to have such great level of women’s football within its boundary. The knock-on effect is getting out there and that has been evident in our two previous home games at Manadon, where we have had more thasn 500 spectators. I ask the people of Plymouth to come and watch and enjoy the level of the women’s game being played on your doorstep.
Over the Christmas holidays I had the privilege towatch the Argyle Girls’ Advanced Development Centre play Swansea. There were Under-16, 14, 12 and 10s teams all on show. One of the biggest things I noticed was the high level of technical and tactical ability. There were more than 80 girls playing football and I see the future of the women’s game is definitely developing in the right direction. I had no idea who won and who lost; for me, that did not and does not mater - the development of the girls’ footballing ability is what matters. Well done to all the girls. Keep training hard. Remember - PRACTICE makes PERMANENT!
I would like to thank all the parents that attended that day - the level of respect that shown for both teams and to the officials was exemplary, the way they were applauding, not only their own team, but the opposition players also in their good play. Please get behind the Ladies today and give them all your support you can in the future. I hope you all enjoy the game. Come on you Greens!
Dave Leonard

TODAY’S VISITORS:
CRAWLEY WASPS
ESTABLISHED in 1991, Crawley Wasps is one of the most successful all-female football clubs in Sussex. In 2017-18, they had more than 100 players registered with the club, from the age of seven right up to three women’s teams. The Crawley Wasps first team won the London & South East Premier Division in 2018, and therefore played in the FA Women’s National League for the first time last season. The Wasps’ reserves play in the South East Counties Premier Division, while the Development Squad (thethird team) are in the Sussex Women’s League. The club’s youth section is expanding again. In 2017-18, Crawley Wasps Under-16s reached the final of both the Sussex Girls Challenge Cup and the Sussex Girls League Cup, while the Under-11s, in their first season as a team, quickly adopted the ball-playing ethos spread throughout the Wasps teams. Argyle lost the opening game of the season 2-0 away in a match they felt they should have at least earned a point from and Crawley will again be difficult opponents as they have won all four of their away matches to date, conceding two goals. In the first encounter, Argyle were hit in the 26th minute when good work from Tash Stephens ended with Sam Pittuck curling a superb shot into the top corner.
Argyle were given a lifeline seven minutes from time when Stow was shown a straight red for stamping on Faye Ivall. Argyle kept pushing forward but to no avail. Manager Dave Leonard said: “I think Crawley will be in the top three. We were better organised and fitter than them, despite them throwing everything at us in the opening half an hour. We weathered the storm only for them to score a wonder goal.
Argyle had a scare early in the second half when Sam Pittuck beat goalkeeper Ben Kyle to the ball but a strong challenge made the final effort strike the outside of a post. Helen Bleazard then passed up a great opportunity to make it 1-1. Pittuck had better luck when good work between her and Owen ended with Tash Stephens curling in another great strike to make it 2-0.
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL AMBER POLLOCK STEPH BECK
“I was delighted at the way we played in the second half, the way we pressed them, we pushed and pushed but to no avail. We had chances but they had two half-chances and scored. “From a longevity point of view, I feel frustrated we didn’t get anything out of the game but I also feel proud in how organised we were and how our fitness in the last 25 minutes led us to dominate the game.”
